Footage of my school/cemetery's resident Federal Signal 2001-SRN model siren turning and winding down for the noon test on Wednesday, May 1st, 2024. Everything looks up to standard! She sounds like a dream too. Wish I could've got video of her spinning up and starting her wail, but alas, I am in business class and forgot the test was today.

Okay for those of you who wanted me to sirenpost- here you go!

Sirens seem very similar to mermaids at first, but there are a few key differences. While mermaids are the result of a person being turned into one by a whale, a siren is what a person would become if they were to drown in a body of water without a whale, and without their body being disturbed for long enough. This makes sirens much less common in the Great Lake, but much more common in, say, smaller inland lakes in The City.

What do sirens do, exactly? Sirens, while more monstrous in appearance, still are vaguely humanoid, and when above water can shapeshift for small amounts of time in order to lure others in and kill them.

Why do sirens try to lure others into the water? When a person becomes a siren, they still have mostly human sentience, although they can be a bit animalistic when prompted. However, they can also no longer die. A siren can be horribly incapacitated though- if injured badly, they will be left to suffer and bleed and agonize, but they will not be able to die, even if torn apart piece by piece. The only way for a siren to truly die is to lure another person into the water and kill them, which, in turn, turns the person they’ve killed into a siren, perpetuating the cycle.

Anyways one of my OCs is a siren <3 she can maintain a mostly human form when out of the water for long periods of time however that is due to fuckery with help from an arbiter and is not the standard.
