"Don't spy on a privacy lab" (and other career advice for university provosts)
Tumblr media
This is a wild and hopeful story: grad students at Northeastern successfully pushed back against invasive digital surveillance in their workplace, through solidarity, fearlessness, and the bright light of publicity. It’s a tale of hand-to-hand, victorious combat with the “shitty technology adoption curve.”
What’s the “shitty tech adoption curve?” It’s the process by which oppressive technologies are normalized and spread. If you want to do something awful with tech — say, spy on people with a camera 24/7 — you need to start with the people who have the least social capital, the people whose objections are easily silenced or overridden.
That’s why all our worst technologies are first imposed on refugees -> prisoners -> kids -> mental patients -> poor people, etc. Then, these technologies climb the privilege gradient: blue collar workers -> white collar workers -> everyone. Following this pathway lets shitty tech peddlers knock the rough edges off their wares, inuring us all to their shock and offense.
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/21/great-taylors-ghost/#solidarity-or-bust
20 years ago, if you ate dinner under the unblinking eye of a CCTV, it was because you were housed in a supermax prison. Today, it’s because you were unwise enough to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for “home automation” from Google, Apple, Amazon or another “luxury surveillance” vendor.
Northeastern’s Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC) is home to the “Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute,” where grad students study the harms of surveillance and the means by which they may be reversed. If there’s one group of people who are prepared to stand athwart the shitty tech adoption curve, it is the CPI grad students.
Which makes it genuinely baffling that Northeastern’s Senior Vice Provost for Research decided to install under-desk heat sensors throughout ISEC, overnight, without notice or consultation. The provost signed the paperwork that brought the privacy institute into being.
Students throughout ISEC were alarmed by this move, but especially students on the sixth floor, home to the Privacy Institute. When they demanded an explanation, they were told that the university was conducting a study on “desk usage.” This rang hollow: students at the Privacy Institute have assigned desks, and they badge into each room when they enter it.
As Privacy Institute PhD candidate Max von Hippel wrote, “Reader, we have assigned desks, and we use a key-card to get into the room, so, they already know how and when we use our desks.”
https://twitter.com/maxvonhippel/status/1578048837746204672
So why was the university suddenly so interested in gathering fine-grained data on desk usage? I asked von Hippel and he told me: “They are proposing that grad students share desks, taking turns with a scheduling web-app, so administrators can take over some of the space currently used by grad students. Because as you know, research always works best when you have to schedule your thinking time.”
That’s von Hippel’s theory, and I’m going to go with it, because the provost didnt offer a better one in the flurry of memos and “listening sessions” that took place after the ISEC students arrived at work one morning to discover sensors under their desks.
This is documented in often hilarious detail in von Hippel’s thread on the scandal, in which the university administrators commit a series of unforced errors and the grad students run circles around them, in a comedy of errors straight out of “Animal House.”
https://twitter.com/maxvonhippel/status/1578048652215431168
After the sensors were discovered, the students wrote to the administrators demanding their removal, on the grounds that there was no scientific purpose for them, that they intimidated students, that they were unnecessary, and that the university had failed to follow its own rules and ask the Institutional Review Board (IRB) to review the move as a human-subjects experiment.
The letter was delivered to the provost, who offered “an impromptu listening session” in which he alienated students by saying that if they trusted the university to “give” them a degree, they should trust it to surveil them. The students bristled at this characterization, noting that students deliver research (and grant money) to “make it tick.”
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Sensors arrayed around a kitchen table at ISEC]
The students, believing the provost was not taking them seriously, unilaterally removed all the sensors, and stuck them to their kitchen table, annotating and decorating them with Sharpie. This prompted a second, scheduled “listening session” with the provost, but this session, while open to all students, was only announced to their professors (“Beware of the leopard”).
The students got wind of this, printed up fliers and made sure everyone knew about it. The meeting was packed. The provost explained to students that he didn’t need IRB approval for his sensors because they weren’t “monitoring people.” A student countered, what was being monitored, “if not people?” The provost replied that he was monitoring “heat sources.”
https://github.com/maxvonhippel/isec-sensors-scandal/blob/main/Oct_6_2022_Luzzi_town_hall.pdf
Remember, these are grad students. They asked the obvious question: which heat sources are under desks, if not humans (von Hippel: “rats or kangaroos?”). The provost fumbled for a while (“a service animal or something”) before admitting, “I guess, yeah, it’s a human.”
Having yielded the point, the provost pivoted, insisting that there was no privacy interest in the data, because “no individual data goes back to the server.” But these aren’t just grad students — they’re grad students who specialize in digital privacy. Few people on earth are better equipped to understand re-identification and de-aggregation attacks.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A window with a phrase written in marker, ‘We are not doing science here’ -Luzzi.]
A student told the provost, “This doesn’t matter. You are monitoring us, and collecting data for science.” The provost shot back, “we are not doing science here.” This ill-considered remark turned into an on-campus meme. I’m sure it was just blurted in the heat of the moment, but wow, was that the wrong thing to tell a bunch of angry scientists.
From the transcript, it’s clear that this is where the provost lost the crowd. He accused the students of “feeling emotion” and explaining that the data would be used for “different kinds of research. We want to see how students move around the lab.”
Now, as it happens, ISEC has an IoT lab where they take these kinds of measurements. When they do those experiments, students are required to go through IRB, get informed consent, all the stuff that the provost had bypassed. When this is pointed out, the provost says that they had been given an IRB waiver by the university’s Human Research Protection Program (HRPP).
Now a prof gets in on the action, asking, pointedly: “Is the only reason it doesn’t fall under IRB is that the data will not be published?” A student followed up by asking how the university could justify blowing $50,000 on surveillance gear when that money would have paid for a whole grad student stipend with money left over.
The provost’s answers veer into the surreal here. He points out that if he had to hire someone to monitor the students’ use of their desks, it would cost more than $50k, implying that the bill for the sensors represents a cost-savings. A student replies with the obvious rejoinder — just don’t monitor desk usage, then.
Finally, the provost started to hint at the underlying rationale for the sensors, discussing the cost of the facility to the university and dangling the possibility of improving utilization of “research assets.” A student replies, “If you want to understand how research is done, don’t piss off everyone in this building.”
Now that they have at least a vague explanation for what research question the provost is trying to answer, the students tear into his study design, explaining why he won’t learn what he’s hoping to learn. It’s really quite a good experimental design critique — these are good students! Within a few volleys, they’re pointing out how these sensors could be used to stalk researchers and put them in physical danger.
The provost turns the session over to an outside expert via a buggy Zoom connection that didn’t work. Finally, a student asks whether it’s possible that this meeting could lead to them having a desk without a sensor under it. The provost points out that their desk currently doesn’t have a sensor (remember, the students ripped them out). The student says, “I assume you’ll put one back.”
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A ‘public art piece’ in the ISEC lobby — a table covered in sensors spelling out ‘NO!,’ surrounded by Sharpie annotations decrying the program.]
They run out of time and the meeting breaks up. Following this, the students arrange the sensors into a “public art piece” in the lobby — a table covered in sensors spelling out “NO!,” surrounded by Sharpie annotations decrying the program.
Meanwhile, students are still furious. It’s not just that the sensors are invasive, nor that they are scientifically incoherent, nor that they cost more than a year’s salary — they also emit lots of RF noise that interferes with the students’ own research. The discussion spills onto Reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/NEU/comments/xx7d7p/northeastern_graduate_students_privacy_is_being/
Yesterday, the provost capitulated, circulating a memo saying they would pull “all the desk occupancy sensors from the building,” due to “concerns voiced by a population of graduate students.”
https://twitter.com/maxvonhippel/status/1578101964960776192
The shitty technology adoption curve is relentless, but you can’t skip a step! Jumping straight to grad students (in a privacy lab) without first normalizing them by sticking them on the desks of poor kids in underfunded schools (perhaps after first laying off a computer science teacher to free up the budget!) was a huge tactical error.
A more tactically sound version of this is currently unfolding at CMU Computer Science, where grad students have found their offices bugged with sensors that detect movement and collect sound:
https://twitter.com/davidthewid/status/1387909329710366721
The CMU administration has wisely blamed the presence of these devices on the need to discipline low-waged cleaning staff by checking whether they’re really vacuuming the offices.
https://twitter.com/davidthewid/status/1387426812972646403
While it’s easier to put cleaners under digital surveillance than computer scientists, trying to do both at once is definitely a boss-level challenge. You might run into a scholar like David Gray Widder, who, observing that “this seems like algorithmic management of lowly paid employees to me,” unplugged the sensor in his office.
https://twitter.com/davidthewid/status/1387909329710366721
This is the kind of full-stack Luddism this present moment needs. These researchers aren’t opposed to sensors — they’re challenging the social relations of sensors, who gets sensed and who does the sensing.
https://locusmag.com/2022/01/cory-doctorow-science-fiction-is-a-luddite-literature/
[Image ID: A flier inviting ISEC grad students to attend an unadvertised 'listening session' with the vice-provost. It is surmounted with a sensor that has been removed from beneath a desk and annotated in Sharpie to read: 'If found by David Luzzi suck it.']

Read the full call to action here.
Tomorrow, November 29th, the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the #BDS movement is calling for an all day social media storm. Our physical and digital actions can be used together to strengthen our demands: Permanent ceasefire and lifting the siege to stop Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Lawful sanctions on Israel, including a #MilitaryEmbargo. Pressure on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants for Israeli leaders. Click here for prepared messages and images to use for the social media storm. Over the last 7 weeks, millions of you have taken to the streets for the largest protests the world has seen in the last 20 years! We are grateful to each one of you who, through your voices and creative actions, have built up unprecedented grassroots power to end Israel’s genocidal war against 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza. Yet, Western governments are continuing to arm, fund and provide political cover for Israel’s genocide. We must act urgently to end all state, corporate and institutional complicity with Israel’s genocidal apartheid regime. Palestinian lives and livelihoods literally depend on it. To this end, and as time has shown, BDS is the most effective form of solidarity with the Palestinian liberation struggle. Tomorrow, we call for escalating worldwide peaceful mobilizations and expressions of meaningful solidarity to stop the genocide including: 1. Whenever feasible, organizing peaceful disruptions, sit-ins, occupations, etc. targeting  policymakers, as well as the corporate enablers of genocide and apartheid (arms manufacturers, investment firms), and institutions (media, universities, cultural spaces, etc.). 2. Disrupting the transport of weapons, or weapon parts, to Israel, including in transit states, by supporting trade unions refusing to handle such shipments, as has been done in Belgium, US, and the Spanish State, and as expressed by trade unions in India, Turkey, Italy and Greece.  3. Pressuring parliaments and governments to cancel existing military contracts and agreements with Israel, as Colombia’s president publicly espoused, and as demanded by the BDS movement in Brazil, a demand supported by civil society and more than 60 parliamentarians in the country. 4. Intensifying all strategic economic boycott and divestment campaigns against complicit corporations, and escalating campaigns to cut all ties to apartheid Israel and its complicit academic and cultural institutions as well as sports teams. Mobilizing your community, trade union, association, church, social network, student government/union, city council, cultural center, or other organization to declare itself an Apartheid Free Zone (AFZ) on November 29th, if it hasn’t already, and organize a solidarity event or action on November 29th. 5. Pressuring your elected officials, where relevant, through direct communication or collective direct action, to demand real pressure on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to urgently prosecute Netanyahu and all other Israeli officials responsible for genocide, apartheid, and war crimes. If not now, when? In solidarity, The Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC)

The Gaza Monologues: Audio Production in Solidarity with Palestine!
The Gaza Monologues is a collection of testimonies from Gazan youth in 2010, after the first war on Gaza, collected and adapted for stage by ASHTAR Theatre in Ramallah (@ASHTARTheatre), and performed here by 26 people from several countries for International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People on November 29, 2023. In lieu of copyright purchases, ASHTAR Theatre requests donations to their programs in the West Bank.
This is an audio-only production of The Gaza Monologues, but is posted as a video to include subtitles. Most monologues are in English, but there are two in Arabic, two in Spanish, and one in French. English subtitles are available for all monologues. Currently, subtitles in Arabic, Spanish, and French are only up for the monologues that are spoken in each respective language, though we’ll try to get subtitles up for others in the near future. The script of The Gaza Monologues is available in those languages and more.

forget voter fraud; rb this post with a receipt proving you have given $5 or more to any of the following orgs or funds, and i will draw you free propaganda
more specifically, i will make you a digital sketch! however, if you give over 20, you get a flat color, over 30, and you also get very basic shading, over 50, and you get a fully rendered piece. to include those unable to give, i will randomly choose one reblogger per round to also get their own sketch propaganda, should they choose to accept it. so one reblog = one entry! if you have multiple receipts, i will let you decide if you want them to count cumulatively towards one piece or if you'd like multiple. examples of previous commissions here!!
no hateful content, no nsfw, and for the purposes of this blog, whatever you ask me to draw has to be at least vaguely related to the tournament. as propaganda, your drawing will be posted publicly on this blog, which is the guiding sentiment for most of these rules
i tried to focus on either on-the-ground or direct actions, although there are a few where that's not the case. if you have any suggestions, feel free to leave them. orgs and funds below:
gaza evacuation funds from operation olive branch (also contains other gaza mutual aid links), gazafunds, or those that have been vetted or shared by el-shab-hussein, nabulsi, palipunk, ibtisams, 90-ghost, or another palestinian blogger
sudanese gfm and refugee support (there are some in el-shab-hussein's pinned as well)
peace african hope relief fund in eastern drc
kakuma queer
gaza home/business repair funds
clinic supporting refugees in chad
khartoum kitchen
other orgs and funds vetted by sudanese diaspora
mona's initiatives providing direct aid in gaza
the sudan solidarity collective
the panzi foundation
pious projects (period-related relief)
life for gaza
help gaza children
care for gaza
watermelon relief: aid for displaced families in gaza
friends of the congo
atlanta solidarity fund
landback
palestine action
much of my post was based off of this post by karinyecrafts, who is doing free commissions for people who donate $5 or more to salma's evacuation fund and rb with their receipt. salma is a 13 year old type 1 diabetic currently in egypt. her father and brothers are in gaza. your support will help her get insulin and reunite her family
feel free to replicate absolutely anything about this idea. otherwise, consider rbing this post and don't forget your daily click!

A couple weeks ago, I led a zine making workshop/Palestinian solidarity event for my local Asian racial solidarity group. I gave a primer on zines and DIY as well as the political roots of DIY publishing, and some tutorials. The theme was reconnecting to resistance in an open learning circle since the Asian continent has a long and wide breadth history of resistance. We provided zine making supplies and I brought both some Palestinian zines and a curated collection of examples from my personal zine library! It was also potluck style.
It was kind of interesting leading this workshop! I don't consider myself to be an expert on revolutionary histories, there's a lot of theory and info to catch up on, but I read a lot of PFLP and Palestinian resistance writing when I was in my undergrad because I was able to meet Joe Sacco who was the cartoonist who published Footnotes in Gaza and Palestine (around 2017?). I also designed some posters for his Toronto visit in partnership with the TPFF. Most significantly, I read Strategy for the Liberation of Palestine by the PFLP - it is both a historical document and a live program that lays out the fundamentals of Palestinian liberation as well as localized analysis (160~ pages). There were Asian people in attendance originating from all over the continent and of varying faiths but no one was familiar with historic Palestinian resistance, only with the current narrative about israhelli occupation - so of course I was happy to to talk about Ghassan Kanafani, Leila Khaled, and the PFLP and the historic 3rd world solidarity movements across Asia!
Most people weren't familiar with zines either, so I was also very sparkly-eyed in info dumping about zines to the room! One of the participants brought musakhan rolls which are a traditional Palestinian dish... they were SO yummy... I did have more than I should have... and they included the recipe as one of the zine pages!!! There were also many Filipinos present resulting in me going home with a lot of leftover turon (it helped me survive my ongoing depressive episode in April lol)
Overall it was so nice having conversations with others regardless of where they were at in their politicization journey. There is always more to learn, and more time to spend with one another...and we can all grow together too 🫶🏼 politicization can be very personal and I think as long as we can develop principles, sense for collective, and maintain revolutionary imagination - we can survive together!
Here are some of the Palestinian zines that I brought for people to sift through! I have like 20+ pdfs on my computer and more from encampments that I've visited and will hopefully scan soon!
Palestine: An Introduction from DecolonizePalestine ABCs of Occupation & Resistance by Rachel Mattson The Palestinian Struggle for National Liberation by OBF-HRD/Manila University BDS: What it is, Why it matters by Leila Abdula Razzaq Digitized copy of Ghassan Kanafani by Anni Kanafani (Beirut, 1973), found via the internet archive! Ukrainian pilots will start training on 4ª generation Western fighters in the United Kingdom, focused on the F-16
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 05/15/2023 - 19:02 in Military, War Zones
Ukrainian pilots will soon begin flight training for NATO's standard fourth-generation fighter operation, the UK government confirmed before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to London on Monday.
In February, the UK Prime Minister announced plans to develop a new training program for Ukrainian pilots to support their efforts to build a new Ukrainian air force with standard NATO F-16 jets.
Tumblr media
This summer, the United Kingdom plans to host an elementary flight phase for Ukrainian pilots to learn basic training.

This will adapt the program used by UK pilots to provide Ukrainians with piloting skills that they can use on a different type of aircraft. This training goes hand in hand with the United Kingdom's efforts to work with other countries in the supply of F-16 jets - Ukraine's favorite fighters.
“This is a crucial moment in Ukraine's resistance to a terrible war of aggression that they did not choose or provoke. They need the sustained support of the international community to defend themselves against the flood of relentless and indiscriminate attacks that have been their daily reality for more than a year,” said UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

"We shouldn't disappoint them. The front line of Putin's war of aggression may be in Ukraine, but the flaws extend all over the world. It is in our interest to ensure that Ukraine is successful and that Putin's barbarism is not rewarded.

Next month, the United Kingdom will host a Ukraine Recovery Conference to galvanize international investment to support the reconstruction of Ukraine, promoting the emerging sectors where the country was thriving before Putin's large-scale invasion, such as clean energy and technology.

The day before his visit to London, Zelensky visited Germany, which promised its largest military aid package for Ukraine, valued at more than 2.7 billion euros.
It is also important to note that the United Kingdom confirmed last week that it provided Storm Shadow precision missiles to Ukraine. These are the first long-range cruise missiles in Ukraine's arsenal and have already been used by Ukraine in its defense against the Russian invasion, according to several reports.

The Power of ‘We’ for an equal world
Tumblr media
Partnerships go a long way in driving meaningful digital engagement for non-profits during campaigns and make the cause relatable in a pandemic impacted world.
Digital has never been more important for charities than in 2020, as Covid-19 forced non-profits to embrace the “new normal” – in which digital enabled technologies and platforms play a major, long-term role in mobilising communities, campaigning and fundraising. And while doing so it is imperative that we need to re-invent re-strategies and put our acts together in a real time bound manner.
As an organisation, Plan India is committed to the cause of promoting girls rights and equality. As a humanitarian organisation, while we were at the forefront of COVID-19 response, providing immediate relief and aid to more than a million population, we also set about executing an ambitious digital campaign #EqualUnlock mobilising partners and hundreds of girls from the most marginalised section of the society. Putting the spotlight on rights of girls and their agency is all the more important as often such issues slip through the cracks in the larger scheme of things. We should not let COVID upend decades of work around gender equality.
The campaign #EqualUnlock conceived as part of the International Day of the Girl which falls on 11 October, challenged stereotypes that hold them back or question their capabilities based on gender. The spirit of the campaign was: It is proven that girls have the potential to lead companies and countries through positions of power and be Unconquerable. They strive to fight their battles of freedom and be Unafraid. In a world that ties them with limiting stereotypes and unequal representation, they choose to be Unstoppable. In a post COVID world we should not let girls fight alone but be their voice because it’s time for an #EqualUnlock.
Each October since 2016, led by different Plan International offices, thousands of girls all over the world have taken over positions of power including those of Presidents, Ambassadors, CEOs and Chief Editors as part of a global movement in support of gender equality. Given the new normal created by COVID-19 physical takeovers was difficult but what could not be missed was the need to highlight the need for continued focus on girls’ rights and equality. Embracing the new normal, In India we tweaked the physical takeovers to social media takeovers and roped in partners such as diplomatic Missions, corporates, media and influencers—who espouse the cause of gender equality.
Therefore, Delegation of the European Union to India, Embassy of Argentina, Australian High Commission, Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium, High Commission of Canada in India, Embassy of the Czech Republic, Royal Danish Embassy, Embassy of Finland, Embassy of France, Embassy of Israel, Embassy of Ireland, Embassy of Latvia, Embassy of Lithuania, Embassy of Mexico, Embassy of Netherlands, Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia, Embassy of Sweden and the Embassy of Switzerland; the content platform The Better India – Hindi and English; and the corporates H&M joined the social media takeovers— all came forth to not only celebrate the Day of the Girl but also give up their individual social media handles as Ambassadors/CEOs or that of their organisation in solidarity.
The reach of the campaign was further strengthened with the support of globally acclaimed sportspersons such as Tashi and Nungshi Malik, Tania Sachdev and Ria Rajeshwari Kumari. As a result 20+ girls, some of them from the remotest communities in India, took the digital world by storm reaching 9 million people organically and raising one unified voice for girls’ rights and equality.
It is evident that together we can make a far bigger impact than we could by acting alone. The big question is—do you see yourself as flagbearer for girls’ rights and equality? The road ahead can be lonely, challenging and long drawn but the outcome is a world where girls are finally seen as equals.

When you really think about it, it's weird that we feel cringe about sharing "old" art that's less than two years old. Every day I look at a painting I've had for over 20 years that reminds my of taking the train to high school. Another about farmer solidarity I bought in a now-closed Mexican restaurant in college at least 16 years ago.
I follow an account that shared word medieval illustrations. People still flock from all over the world to see Renaissance paintings or cave paintings. I've read books that are 6,000 years old. I've visited a cave described in books over 2,000 years ago before the city there was built.
And when I share your fan art or your shit posts here that are 9 or more years old, it's because they bring me that same constant joy. I see someone express a party of my life I cherish even though we're separated by years. Even though some of them are from digital ghosts. Accounts from people who moved on our died. But this beauty remains as long as the record does. That's a very human thing. It's not cringe, it's saying your little thing is still part of a living culture long after you made it. It's still loved, and so are you for making it.

The Legend Of O.T. Jackson And The Black Ghost Town Of Dearfield, Colorado
This is Black Folklore and our job is to find the story within the story that every great masterpiece encompasses. Welcome to the legendary tale of O.T. Jackson.
Source: creative services / iOne Digital
A name can be so much more than just an identity. Sometimes it can be a calling, or in a way, even a compass guiding you towards the direction of how you will leave your mark in this world.
For Oliver Toussaint Jackson, that mark was to build a lasting legacy for black people in America.
Source: Dearfield, Colorado- black ghost town / Denver Public Library
O.T. Jackson was born in Oxford, Ohio in 1862. His parents Hezekiah and Virginia Caroline Jackson were former slaves from Virginia who managed to escape the clutches of the Jim Crow South. Although not much is known about O.T.’s parents, who they named their son after says everything you need to know about them.
O.T. was named after the great Haitian general François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture.
Louverture was one of the most prominent and important leaders of the Haitian Revolution in 1791. The former slave helped lead the Haitian enslaved majority in rebel victories over the planter class and thousands of invading French troops. He was also able, through diplomacy, to keep Spain and England from invading the already ravished nation. Louverture was eventually able to conquer the Spanish side of Hispaniola, uniting the entire island and naming himself the governor, creating the world’s first sovereign Black state.
Little did O.T.’s parents know, but naming their son after the Haitian general would guide him for his entire being. Like Toussaint, O.T Jackson was a trailblazer and a pioneer who wanted more for his people. He was also so much more. And as he grew into adulthood so did his legend.
In 1882 the 20-year-old Jackson moved to Cleveland where he worked as a waiter and also wrote for the Cleveland Gazette which was at once one of the longest-running Black papers in the United States.
Even though his parents gave him a forever idol who lived within his name, Jackson yearned to find his own–insert one Booker T. Washington. Washington had just founded the famous Tuskegee Institute and his teachings were very intriguing to Jackson but polarizing to some.
In the late 19th century, Black America was at a crossroads intellectually. Some Blacks believed and followed the teachings of W.E.B Du Bois, and others followed Booker T. Washington. Both were two of the most influential Black men in American history. They each wanted and worked for civil rights for Blacks in America, but had two totally different approaches. (Similar to Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.)
Washington promoted self-help and racial solidarity. He believed if Blacks looked to elevate themselves, whites would have no choice but to accept and respect them.
Du Bois on the other hand advocated for political action and social change. He believed Washington’s strategy would only make white oppression worse.
But O.T. Jackson saw things more like Booker T. Washington. He saw true freedom in wealth building and ownership. For Blacks, there was nothing more dangerous than living in a white world. Records show forty-nine Black Americans were known to have been lynched in 1882. (There were probably hundreds more never reported.) Jackson believed Blacks needed their own community away from the despair and racism.
The Tuskegee Institute was a testament to what a motivated Black mind could create and Jackson knew he needed to find a way.
In 1887, the 25 years old Jackson moved to Denver, Colorado, then later Boulder, where he honed in on his instinct for entrepreneurship.
During the time, Colorado was a promising land for Blacks escaping bondage after the Civil War. Whites were afraid of the Native Americans and Asians who occupied the lands, which gave Blacks a unique opportunity to seek refuge and build communities.
Sadly it’s almost impossible to know exactly how O.T. Jackson lived. But it’s fascinating piecing his life together through the many newspaper articles that mention his name. In the 19th century, newspapers were the holy grail for local and national information and Jackson always seemed to be in the mix. While diving through his life I was able to find over 19 different articles in more than 5 different newspapers all praising his accolades–some of which he even wrote himself. The man was a true legend. He bought his first restaurant before he was 30 called the Stillman Cafe, which once boastfully promoted one thousand gallons of ice cream a day for the 4th of July weekend. Some would argue that it was the best ice cream in the state.
A newspaper clipping from the Boulder Daily Camera writes of Jackson buying his first hotel in 1894 called the Brainard Hotel. Despite still being Boulder’s #1 caterer and running the Stillman Cafe, Jackson was now a hotel owner. His name began to ring among the Black communities of Colorado. Who was this slick Black businessman who could never lose?–not even in a footrace.
A fascinating Boulder Daily Camera newspaper clipping from 1896 tells the story of a footracebetween O.T. Jackson and another businessman named W.H. Allgeyer. The two wagered a hand full of cigars for the first man to cross the finish line down Pearl street. Legend has it that Jackson, who lost a shoe in the middle of the race, beat Allgeyer so bad that he quit halfway through the race so he could sit on the sidewalk to watch Jackson’s ‘fast-flying soles.’
This race would add to Jackson’s allure.
Not only did his name begin to hold serious weight in the state of Colorado, but so did his boozy parties. The Brainard Hotel frequently had live entertainment and hosted events, making it a popular destination for folks seeking entertainment in the western frontier during the time. In 1907 Boulder banned liquor which devastated the Brainard Hotel. Jackson was forced to sell the hotel, but like losing his shoe during his infamous footrace, he was determined to win regardless of the circumstances.
Even though he had lost his hotel, he understood business and how to maneuver next to the white man. With Booker T. Washington’s ideology pumping through his veins, Jackson set his sights on creating an agricultural settlement for Black folks in America. If he was going to find the resources to make this happen, he needed some political support. In 1908 he worked as a caterer and campaigned for Democratic candidates. Shortly after he was given a messenger’s post in the Colorado governor’s office.
With the dream of a better world for Black Americans as his guide, Jackson convinced the governor, to help him file a claim through the Homestead Act of 1909, on 320 acres of desert land in Weld County, Colorado.
Source: Dearfield, Colorado- black ghost town / Denver Public Library
When Jackson founded Dearfield in 1910, the land was far from an ideal place to start a community. The desert environment provided little resources needed to support a town, but that didn’t stop Black families from moving to Dearfield and finding a way.
Seven families moved to the newly established Black town in 1910. They built houses out of mud, farmed the land, and survived the brutal winters sheltering in abandoned caves. But the families stuck it out and eventually, the tides began to shift for Dearfield. The world had just begun its second World War, and U.S. involvement would drive up the demand for crops like corn, barley, and potatoes. Dearfield’s agricultural roots would benefit them greatly and money began to pour into the town.
Jackson was also a master promoter. He advertised his Black town in almost every newspaper in Colorado. His advertising helped make Dearfield a destination hub for Black entertainment. Black folks from all over Denver would travel by train to Dearfield for their famous dance hall which had live entertainment almost every weekend. The tourist destination also boasted amazing fishing and hunting, as well as a rodeo.

But hard times would fall on O.T. Jackson and his beloved Black town. World War II would end and the profits farmers were making from the war would dry up along with the weather. Since Dearfield lacked a proper irrigation system, crops could not grow consistently. The Great Depression also played a huge role in the demise of Dearfield and by 1940 only 12 people were left. Jackson died in 1948, but he never stopped fighting for his community.
The town went virtually untouched for years, leaving the remaining structures decayed and ghostly. Even though there are no ghost stories attached to the town, some call it the creepiest ghost town in Colorado.

Clinical Trials 2024 Industry Size, Demands, Growth and Top Key Players Analysis Report
Clinical Trials Industry Overview
The global clinical trials market size was valued at USD 80.7 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.49% from 2024 to 2030.
The market growth spiked in 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. This growth pattern was witnessed by both virtual clinical trials and traditional ones. Several companies invested heavily in novel drug development to minimize COVID-19 patient burden. One such example being, in 2020, Synairgen plc and Parexel collaborated on a Phase III study of Interferon-beta (IFN-beta) treatment for COVID-19. Furthermore, rapid technological evolution, rising prevalence of chronic diseases, globalization of clinical trials, penetration of personalized medicine and a rise in demand for CROs for conducting research activities is expected to positively impact the market growth.
Gather more insights about the market drivers, restrains and growth of theClinical Trials Market
In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic led to changing the ways of conducting upcoming or ongoing clinical trials. Regulatory agencies including the U.S. FDA, the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and China’s National Medical Products Administration among several others issued various guidelines for conducting trials during the pandemic to support the implementation of decentralized clinical trials and virtual services. The current scenario for research and development activities across the globe and the need for several new treatment options have also led to the adoption of fast-track clinical trials. Thus, aforementioned factors are estimated to offer new avenues to the clinical trials market growth.
Favorable government support and initiatives is another aspect boosting the market growth potential. For instance, the WHO launched Solidarity, an international clinical trial to determine effective treatment against COVID-19. [PS2]  It includes comparing four treatment options against the standard of care to evaluate their effectiveness against the coronavirus. In May 2020, the WHO also announced an international alliance for simultaneously developing multiple candidate vaccines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease, calling this effort the Solidarity trial for vaccines.
Furthermore, the use of CRO services helps manufacturers/sponsors pay complete attention to the production capacity and enhance their in-house processes. The availability of the vast array of services from drug discovery to post marketing surveillance has further simplified processes for mid-size & small-scale pharmaceutical and biotechnological organizations by providing them the option to outsource research and development activities to reduce infrastructure investment. For instance, in November 2023, Syneos Health signed an agreement with GoBroad Healthcare Group. This collaborative initiative extended the company’s clinical trial capabilities into a more extensive array of therapeutic areas in China.

BBC and Insider Investigations: Fake Media and Disinformation Campaigns by Russian Intelligence in the West
You are watching news from the weekly rally at the Russian Embassy in Lisbon. Today is July 6, 2:30 PM.
On July 3, journalists from the fact-checking groups “BBC Verify” and “BBC News” revealed who creates fake news for Americans. Thousands of news articles are generated using artificial intelligence and posted on numerous sites with very "American" names. Most of these articles are based on real news and are signed with the names of non-existent journalists. This creates the illusion that these sites are sources of reliable news, but hidden among the content are fabricated stories. Fake documents and doctored YouTube videos featuring people posing as “whistleblowers” or “independent journalists” are used to bolster these bogus stories.
A frequent target of these attacks is Olena Zelenska, the wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is falsely portrayed as either buying a Bugatti sports car with American military aid money or making racist remarks toward employees of a jewelry store in New York.
Clint Watts, head of Microsoft's Digital Threat Intelligence Center, explains that it is now much more common to encounter "information laundering" - the repeated reprinting of fake news in regular news stories to obscure their original source. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c72ver6172do
On July 4, The Insider detailed how the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service organizes disinformation campaigns in the West. From a report found in the hacked correspondence of SVR employees responsible for the “information war” with the West, presented in 2022 at the Federation Council, journalists learned that TV channels RT, Sputnik, and loyal Telegram channels do not meet expectations.
The strategy was also revealed: “Posting in foreign segments of the Internet… materials supposedly on behalf of public pro-Kyiv organizations containing new demands… of a political, economic, social nature. Due to the frequency, intrusiveness, aggressive form, and incorrect presentation, one should expect negative reactions from the target audience."
The Insider journalists also found the “Ice Pick” project in the correspondence, aimed at discrediting a banker who sponsored the Anti-Corruption Foundation and moved to the United States. https://theins.ru/politika/272852
Anti-Semitic graffiti that appeared later in Paris, fake quotes from Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey, Ronaldo demanding an end to aid to Ukraine, and a deepfake with a fake voice of Tom Cruise warning of terrorist attacks at the Olympics all align with this strategy. https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2023/12/27/fact-check-did-celebrities-like-taylor-swift-and-cristiano-ronaldo-criticise-ukraine
Pro-Kremlin resources often appeal to freedom of speech when they face resistance. It is important to remember that Russian authorities have nearly destroyed independent journalism in their country. Since March 2023, they have detained The Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich, accusing him of spying for the CIA. Last week, the Yekaterinburg court began considering his case, which could result in up to 20 years in prison. Evan's colleagues shave their heads in solidarity with him. #IStandWithEvan https://x.com/holodmedia/status/1808777869331488948
