Day 20: Make art inspired by a fanfic
Today’s the flipside of our challenge from day 2. We’re making art for our favorite fanfics today!
Whether it’s a five-minute doodle or something more elaborate, a podfic of a short ficlet or an image collage  - knowing that their writing inspired somebody is one of the greatest feelings to give an author and will most likely not only make their day, but their entire week!
Have fun creating and spread the love!

Character Creation Challenge, Day 20: Stargate SG-1 Roleplaying Game
RE: P6P-889 data crunching
From: absalman.phoenixsite.com
General Loyer,
By now, you've probably gotten the P6P-889 report. I'll attach a copy in case you haven't, or haven't had a chance to read it. If so, I wanted to preface matters with an apology. Despite my best efforts to edit for readability, it's still a fairly data-heavy package, and actionable items won't be apparent on first glance. If you'll permit, I'll do my best to sum up.
First, the environment really is as bad as the contact and operations teams reported. Atmospheric contamination is primarily heavy metals, which strongly contribute to the unreliability of the Stargate. Adding to this, the absence of any large gas giant between 889 and its system's outer asteroid ring mean that the planet welcomes a comparably large number of extraplanetary impacts, further contributing to the atmospheric dust and metal contamination. The local Unas population appear to have adapted to it, but for anyone not used to the environment, breathing and eye protection is required at bare minimum, if not a full environmental suit. Needless to say, a long-term diplomatic outpost is not recommended.
Telal didn't keep many personal effects or monuments to his glory. The majority of his own data was administrative, with a small amount dedicated to long-term revenge planning. For a Goa'uld, his hold was weak even among his own subjects, and he did not receive much in the way of support. He seemed to view his station on 889 as a punishment detail, and here, he was probably correct. He believed that his fellow Goa'uld set him up to fail and were eagerly watching for him to be devoured in a worker uprising. Paranoid and unconfirmable, but it's undeniable that the success of the operation hinged on the relative paucity of on-world Jaffa.
As for the mine itself, while the naquadah deposits are considerable, they're also heavily contaminated and difficult to access. The local Unas, now freed from forced labor, are thoroughly unwilling to return to the mines, which is understandable. Given that any other labor force would need to take extreme caution in order to avoid the worst of the atmosphere, it is likely that 889's naquadah reserves may need to remain a "last resort" resource.
Which brings me to the Unas themselves. The population has spent centuries adapting to their world which, while beneficial from a purely biological standpoint, cuts them off culturally from the rest of their kind. There is little interest among the population in evacuating off-world and reuniting with their people, and their local dialect has drifted far enough from the Unas standard language that communication even among other Unas presents significant difficulty. Few of 889's Unas show an interest in joining the Phoenix project, absent the few "overseers" we've been able to rescue. The overriding emotion is a desire to discover what freedom means to them, for themselves.
To be frank, I believe this to be one of those situations where the benefit of charity must be charity alone. Apart from the disruption in the System Lords' naquadah supply, there is no tangible gain to our operations on 889. This is not a failure, but it is a fact. This does, however, bring me to our "overseer" situation and some unique opportunities this poses to personnel.
Despite the difficulties inherent in extricating a Goa'uld symbiote from Unas physiology, the Tok'ra medical team did manage an impressive 80% success rate. However, despite their clean bill of health, the 889 Unas population has no interest in welcoming their former overseers. To them, any Unas implanted with a symbiote is considered dead, and they do not trust the Tok'ra enough to accept our assurances. The former overseers find themselves in a cultural middle ground, with nowhere to return to and nowhere to go. While some of them are eager to continue the fight against their former oppressors, not all of them are. We are housing them for now, but it is not a permanent solution and everyone knows this.
Which brings us, finally, to the "elephant with a paintbrush". One of the former overseers, one Kornaan, has proven to be something of a unique talent. Shortly after being liberated from her symbiote, she was provided with a communication device, and while in quarantine, she managed to strip it down, modify a keyboard to suit the larger, clawed Unas hand, and jury-rig full text-to-speech. Then, still in quarantine, she modified another keyboard, this usable only by Unas. While the normal physical communication difficulties remain in play, she appears to be a rare engineering talent, and in her short time at Phoenix Site, she has made great strides in improving comfort and accessibility for others of her species. They're emailing, General.
In short, while we would be well pleased to retain her for R&D, she is dead set on joining a field team. Were she human and a member of the armed forces, she would be an excellent combat engineer - however, as it stands, she is rootless, traumatized, and expresses a constant, stated desire to do violence to Goa'uld, to the point of considerable difficulty even among our Tok'ra contingent. More worrying, she has taken to explosives and firearms technology with the same verve. I believe, at this point, she would present a considerable destabilizing influence even if she were left to her own devices.
This is where I am openly requesting guidance, General. While 889 is too precarious to hold, Kornaan may be too valuable to let go. I know, compared to a world and a well of naquadah, this may seem such a small thing, but it's the small things that stay with me when all the rest of the universe becomes uncertain.
I look forward to your reply. Yours,
Abby.

*****
Well, this was a pleasant surprise.
I placed Stargate SG-1 in my to-do list as a bit of a break, something silly, something I didn't have to invest a lot of myself in playing around with. I did absolutely no research; I knew there was an old book by AEG, based on 3rd edition D&D, I believe. I did not know that there was an entire, official product that got built and released when I wasn't paying attention.
The Stargate SG-1 RPG is, deep into its core, a fan work - and I say this with love. It is clearly very well thought-out, very heavily worked on and, first and foremost, made by people who are primarily deep and abiding Stargate fans. It just has that feel to it. It's laid out in a way that a designer would never dare, but an artist would. It focuses on obscure parts of the lore in a holistic way that only makes sense if you've ever edited a fan wiki. There's an enthusiasm to this book that practically drips from the pages, an excitement that can only be explained as the effervescence of a lifelong fan getting to really, actually be part of the property that sparks so much joy.
Mechanics-wise, it's 5e, but it's also one of those 5e products that has been renovated so much that I have to question why you'd use 5e in the first place. It's a class-based system... for five levels, then it swaps to point-buy. There's a narrative tension die that determines whether the tone of your episode is heavy enough that a protagonist can die. There's a whole social combat system involving wagering social capital on the likeability of your face. You don't really collect equipment unless it's something personal to you, you're an army unit, you get issued stuff. It feels like, with just a slight nudge, the whole thing could tip over into its own bespoke system, and that wouldn't be a bad thing. My only real mechanical note is that, the way the numbers read on first blush, I'd question how much of an actual challenge is there - but then again, Stargate SG-1 is the sort of property where good does triumph over evil, where our heroes are intrepid, where sometimes the only logical, the only human response to beholding the infinite wonders and errors of your precursors is to make a pun at it.
Having just gotten through the OSR mines, it's this game that really brings me back to an earlier time in the hobby. I'd be just at home finding it by idly running my finger along the spines at a scrungy basement game store, half-listening to the increasingly intense 40k game in the other room, as I am finding it completely at random while hunting down a character sheet online. The one thing that connects both ideas is this notion that the hobby is open, anyone can create, there are no qualifications, you don't need a degree. If the numbers fit right in your head, if you have a compelling theme, if you know someone who can kind of do art and have access to somewhere that'd do print-on-demand, you can make and sell a whole-assed game that'd sit, just as real and just as important, on the shelf with all the others. And sometimes? Sometimes, the properties you love will even ask you to.
Next up: WOTC ouroboros.

It fascinates me that Alistair gets lumped in with the “Chantry Boys” in discussions about Dragon Age Archetypes because it’s just. Very untrue. But it’s an idea the text actually pushes you to connect with in a way I think is purposeful.
This guy introduces us to the lore of the Blight by asking if we want “the chantry version or the truth.” If we ask if they’re not the same thing he smirks and says with some attitude “they rarely are.”
He sums up his religious beliefs saying he’s “not especially” Andrastian, and that “believes in the Maker well enough.”
He’s actually LESS religious than Zevran, who describes himself as fully Andrastian with a regular prayer routine in optional conversation branches.
The things that people use to categorize Alistair’s supposed “Chantry Boy” boy status all have non-religious motivations.
For example, the big one, his virginity, is because 1. He’s nervous around women, which is the gender he finds most attractive 2. He’s actually the youngest Party Member, being freshly 20 years old. 3. And most importantly, he correlates sex with love and was brought up to see them as requiring the other and so feels uncomfortable having sex without what he sees as “true love.” And he just hasn’t been in love yet.
Another example would be his reaction to the Urn of Sacred Ashes. He reacts with wonder akin to Leliana where many others react with a contrasting blasee attitude. Even the Andrastian Zevran.
But you gotta read between the lines here. Zevran doesn’t hold remains as sacred. He’s an assassin. So his prophet’s body is in that urn. It’s a body. The least remarkable and most mundane, perhaps even the hardest to swallow, thing she could ever be to Zevran is a corpse. Kinda takes the wonder out of faith for an assassin if she dies and rests just like any one else.
But Alistair is fascinated, in awe. 1, probably because the Chantry he doubts so much now has some kinda proof that something they said was true, unlike what he previously believed. 2, Alistair is WAY more patriotic than he is religious and we gotta remember that the Fereldans pride themselves on Alamari heritage, and Andraste was probably the most powerful and influential Alamari person to ever live. 3, he’s actually a giant history buff. He info dumps history on you often, with the memorized readings of whatever question you ask. If asked about the King and Loghain before the betrayal at Ostagar, he shows respect for Loghain’s service in the War for Independance, and knowledge of his tactics. And when speaking about his time in training with the chantry as a child, he says the education was actually what he liked most. And a lot of his gifts are things like replica soldiers, Fereldan historical things, maps, (along with his interest in magical artifacts but that’s for another day.) etc. Given his patriotism and love of learning history, yeah, the Urn is a big deal to him.
I have more things I could say, but really, I just find Alistair to be one of the most misrepresented by fandom characters. His character has a TON of subtext that challenges you to look beyond what others represent him as and the low opinion he holds of himself.
The perception of him as Andrastian and devout is one pushed on him by people like Morrigan (and others to some degree) who fights Alistair more like a straw man representing society than she engages with him as himself. She sees him as a Templar even though he left the order specifically because they abused him And he fundamentally disagreed with their practices, The Harrowing specifically being what pushed him to fight to leave.
There are, textually, two ways to interpret Alistair. Through face value aesthetics and symbolism pointing to association with the Chantry and by observing other’s opinion of him. Or through actually listening to what he says and watching what he does.
And it’s just interesting to me that a lot of people get caught in the trap of what he represents aesthetically rather than who he is.
