That EBT restriction is TIGHT too. I work at a convenient store and we take ebt. All out things are cold and packages except for one thing. Hot coffee. You cannot even buy a shitty gas station coffee with EBT because it is a "hot food"

blog post #3! patch pants!
yo! welcome back to another blog post, *man i should have a fucking into for these* okay so today were talking about patch pants! i love patch pants, im on my second pair atm as im still a baby punk, but hey im fucking around and indeed finding out. lets start for basesusually you want to have a denim/sturdy fabric for your pants as a base. i got all of my bases from thrift stores i think. i like to get my patches from random vendors that are at this one venue i go to (the smell in LA) and i like to get them from studsandspikes.com, these are amazing places to get patches for me. on studsandspikes theyre superrrr cheap besides shipping which in my area is 4-5 dollars, theyre about 2.60 per patch, theyre well made, they can be used multiple times, and i just love them in general. OR if youve got fabric (any color besides black), a sharpie, will, and a design you can make it within you own home! (cooler option imo, but some designs are HARD). and then just sew on the patches. i dont know how to describe how to sew it on, but like its just cool. it works well, it takes no ability, besides having thread and sewing needles. a more in depth video is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFCCfSNZzVo&t=277s (shout out to reptil diy btw hes amazing)

living in ur small hometown after high school is weird cuz you see people all the time and you Remember people. I remember the dollar store cashier tonight slept over at my house in the 5th grade. She dyed her hair darker recently I think it looks good on her but I couldn't bring myself to say "i like your hair, looks nice." without saying too much. Instead she gave me my $2.60 change and I walked outside. Anyways-

@theconcealedweapon
You don’t have a bearing on the Conservative Mindset. You’re actually confusing Conservatives with Globalists…you might want to step out of your echo chamber so you can get a real pulse on politics.
The cost of goods is up. Why? It’s a 5-part issue.
1. The Fed printed 40% of currency, or $4 TRILLION dollars in a span of months. They intentionally devalued the dollar. They created inflation, or the devaluation of money. That single dollar bill is now worth-less. In terms of groceries, the grocery cart that was $200 weekly is now pushing $300 for the same exact cart.
2. The Biden-Harris regime not only stopped drilling for oil, they insisted on buying extremely dirty oil. We went from energy independence (gas at $1.50 nationwide) to energy dependence ($3.50 nationwide) to the current pre-election fakery of $2.60 trying to sell you on a healthy economy despite OPEC cutting production.
3. Interest rates. With massive inflation, the Fed jacked interest rates to pull money out of the market. They ramped rates quicker and higher than any ramp up in history. We let the people who caused the problem “fix” the problem…only in government. If you believe the Fed’s numbers saying inflation is near 2.5%, then you have bigger problems. The cost of everything is up, that doesn’t match the 2.5% rate.
4. Corporatism. Most people complain about capitalism, because they lack the intelligence and/or knowledge to debate the corporate greed system. Capitalism is “let’s make a car”. Corporatism is “let’s make a car that breaks and we’re the sole place for replacement parts”.
5. The Fed devalued our money. Biden-Harris cut oil and energy production AND made it expensive to process the oil. With high inflation, now all that costs more. With high rates, the companies have more debt and higher payback rates. And with Corporatism, the companies still manufacturing pass the added costs along to us consumers. You need the product, so you’ll pay the increase.
The conservative mind has never been what you’re claiming, however I know many Globalists with that mentality. I know a couple people with the “I have money. Why should I care if things cost more?” mindset. Who else has that mindset? Taylor Swift, P Diddy, Jay-Z, Tom Hanks…people with bookoo’s of money telling youto vote for more price increases that they don’t feel. They are completely unaware of price increases because they’re not buying the groceries or filling up their cars or even paying their bills.
Time for you to grow up and learn to think for yourself instead of how CNN or MSDNC tells you to think.
Why do conservatives complain about the price of gas and groceries?
If you don't like the price of gas and groceries, just stop buying gas and groceries.
What's that? That's horrible advice?
Well, that's the exact advice you've been giving to other struggling people since the beginning of time. You've been nonchalantly defending the free market whenever it was harmful to others. You convinced yourself that those who are struggling deserve it until you became one. Then, you suddenly decided that it must be some deep state conspiracy instead of accepting that what's happening to you is exactly what you dismissed when it was happening to others.

Prelude to self-destruction Chapter one
The parents
1967.... My parents were a couple of West Virginia hillbillies that fell in love and moved to Miami when I was three months old. My father an average hard working man. He worked hard to provide a modest home. He was the classic leave it to beaver type famly man but the hillbillie version with old fashion morals. A women stays home to make babies and has dinner on the table at 6pm. She does all the housework and picks up behind him. His ways, i think we're more of a 50's era way of life, not the 60's. A loving father who was consistent and dedicated to his family. One of the best fathers a kid could have. He made $2.60 an hour, and that was enough in 67 to purchase a modest home with a swimming pool and enjoy the Florida lifestyle. He was very much in love and happy.
My mother also a hillbillie from West Virgin had been born with a face that let her get away with anything. The complete package of stunning beauty and brains. The only thing holding her back was where she was born.
The move to Miami provided countless opportunities for both of them. Have you ever heard the saying you can bring a city girl to the country but you can't bring a country girl to the city? That was nothing but fact. It didn't take long for the big city of Miami to seep in. She had her second child and stay at home beauty was getting resless. The marriage started seeing stress, and arguing was common when dad got home. She wanted a job, and of course, dad wanted her home. She always had a way of getting her way. She was pregnant with my sister at this time and was growing more anxious. I dont know the story of why and i can't ask her now. she picked real-estate school. The 3rd child was born shortly before obtaining her real estate license. She went to work, and almost overnight, we went from modest income family to her getting as much as 20k in commissions a month. In the late 60s, that was a considerable amount of money. For a woman from West Virginia or anybody for that matter. She was at the top winning awards for best saleswoman. Along with the most commissions. I've overheard people at dinner parties say she could sell you a bag of sand while standing on the beach. She was brokering some of the most expensive properties in Miami beach to the elite wealthy from all over the U.S.
One of those Miami Beach homes sold to an organized crime family, and she made friends. The lavish parties became more frequently along with the arguments. My parents sold the modest home, and we moved into a million dollar 20 acre ranch in West Palm Beach. The elite, wealthy, hot spot had just started to get hot. She was now brokering lavish homes in both Miami and West Palm. This is where divorce is imminent I think as she traveled between cities not coming home. The arguments were loud and became violent. Eventually, both parents were not around much, and anytime we were all together, the violence would be bad. It was always my father leaving with various wounds and blood all over him. I would see my mother the next morning seemingly unphased. This went on for years. I wouldn't see my mother for a week or more at a time. I started seeing my mother with different men if she was even around. We spent most of our time with the live-in sitter. It had been a week or more since I'd seen her this time. My mother arrived home late in the evening with a man in tow dressed in a business suit, She introduced him asher lawyer to the sitter. She had filed for divorce on grounds of child abuse. She accused my father of molesting his own children. This could not be farther from the truth. He was devastated and not allowed to see his children and shamed on a complete lie. When I saw him, he was completely destroyed emotionally. As I got older, I despised her for that, but I had despised her for a lot of other things already.
I remember this night like it was yesterday eched in my memory forever. My mother had called him to the house for a talk, something about the divorce papers. A little while after my father arrived, the screaming and sounds of things in the house crashed into the walls and the floor just liike it had many times before.
I watched 3 men walk into the house and go straight to the kitchen. These were the same men i had seen at her office and separately for a long time now. I heard multiple voices now screaming in the kitchen, and it scared the shit out of me and ran back to my room to hide. Under my table at the window. I heard yelling and the big double front door open and slam against the wall. This shook everything in my room. My wall separates the living room. I hid under my table at the window and watched the 3 men drag my father into the front yard. I watched helplessly as three large men took turns beating my father. My father was a small man 5' 9" and 155 lbs. They took breaks only to yell at him and continue beating him. This went on quite a while, and i did not think this then as a child, but now remembering the ranch with its mile long driveway to the house. Nobody would hear anything in the front yard of this home. It was completely seclued and far away from the main road. As the men continued, the police arrived, and I was excited to see them. I remember feeling relieved, but the men kept beating on my father as they walked over to him, and they joined in beating him too. I can't remember feeling anything but complete sadness and horror at that moment and watched as they put my fathers lifeless body in the trunk of the police car.
To this day, I have only seen violent beatings like my father's received in movies. I didn't see my father again for a long time, thinking he was dead. My father and I only talked about this one time about 25 years ago. He did tell me it was my mothers doing which i knew already, and one of the thugs was her boyfriend at the time. He had been taken to an airport hanger, cleaned up, told him he would die if he came back handed a small amount of cash and put on a plane to Texas.
We didn't stay long in West Palm, moved to California. There were always a lot of drugs in the house. Hundreds of pounds of weed and several kilos of coke with giant bags of pills are always in the house. I know now the bags were Quyludes and amphetamine. There were a lot of violent arguments between my mother and whatever man was in the house. Large parties and fights. The fights would get quite violent. Only this time, my mother was the one bleeding and bruised. Sometimes police would arrive walking through the house with drugs everywhere you looked, but they never said a thing about them, it was like they were invisible and nobody ever went to jail. We had gone from Miami to California and had added another home in Daytona Beach in this cycle of chaos. While in California, my mother would go missing for weeks at a time. I shoplifted food to keep us fed. I received a call one night, and nobody said a word. It was just the sounds of my mother pleading for her life and getting a beating. That is a wonderful thing to hear as a child. I know it was purposely done. The reason i never knew. We stopped traveling and stayed in the Daytona home, mostly with the live-in sitter. The Daytona home was not as big or nice as the others. I believe this home was purchased by my mother and the others owned by the men she dated and those relationships were over. This is when i assume she was trying to get out of the drug dealing business. There were large quantities of drugs in the house but nothing like before.
This is where the smelly house guests would pop in from time to time to put me to sleep. I only woke up one time to what they were doing to me, and it's so horrifying that i don't talk about it, at least not in this chapter. My mother was rarely around, and sometimes we were left alone for a long period of time on our own but mostly with the sitter. The smelly house guest stopped drugging me, and my sister had taken my place. I suppose I had grown into something that these sick fucks didn't want. My brother was lucky and was spared any of the weirdness my sister and I endured. My sister, these days is way out of space, so i know it's done a number on her like it has me. She lives in a noisy place in her own mind to quite the demons. I dont know why, but I think it was just timing. My sister was the age they wanted and left my brother alone as far as I know. He could have blocked it out in a trauma response, though. My sister and I would talk of the abuse with my brother, and he remembers nothing. It was almost as if his mind from a certain period in time had been erased. I wish I'd had that superpower. With attention off of me, i just continued to numb myself with the vast amount of free drugs in the house and stayed in my room watching tv. At one point, I was 11 years old, consuming an 8 ball a day or more, I know now. My mother kept a fireproof box on a ledge inside the fireplace at the house in Daytona beach. There was always a few kilos in it in one big chunk.
I would help mysef to whatever I wanted and go back to my room. One night playing rough I knocked the couch on its side in the living room. That's where i found a paper grocery sack full to the top of $100 dollar bills. To this day I dont know how much that would be but I had grabbed several stacks and hit the streets of Daytona having fun. A 12 year olds dream come true I bought anything and everything at any place that was open. I couldn't spend it all and came home that night with a lot of $100 dollar bills in my pocket. A few days later I came in the ftont door and found my mom in a pool of blood. Not knowing what happened and immediately concered about the money I took I tried to put what was left back, it wasn't there. I assume I was responsible for her beating. A few days later I'm on a plane to go live with my father. Something that saved my life.

Ridership Sags, Costs Soar, but Shapiro Still Wants More Money for SEPTA
Despite exploding costs and plunging ridership, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) appears in line for another infusion of nearly $300 million in taxpayer cash.
Earlier this week, Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro vowed to increase public transportation funding by $282.8 million.
“Ever since I was a state representative and county commissioner in Montgomery County, I have supported SEPTA and the critical services it offers to hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians every day,” the governor said. “SEPTA has presented plans to address safety and cleanliness throughout their system, and county officials have entertained a willingness to step up to the plate and increase their support. As a result, my administration is prepared to make a major investment in SEPTA.”
It’s yet to be determined how much local funding, if any, Delaware Valley governments will kick in.
SEPTA CEO and General Manager Leslie S. Richards praised Shapiro’s decision. She said it would help SEPTA “address our more pressing needs and…continue [to serve] our communities.” Richards previously said SEPTA might cut services by 20 percent and raise fares by 30 percent. That would raise a Quick Trip Ticket from $2.50 to $3.25 and SEPTA Key and contactless payments from $2 to $2.60.
SEPTA funding and budget issues became a major focus for Democratic politicians after the transit agency revealed that it faced a looming fiscal cliff. It burned through $1.8 billion in federal COVID money between Fiscal Years 2020 and 2023 while generating just $1.18 billion in revenue.
That’s not counting the $2 billion in annual funding from Pennsylvania taxpayers, something independent auditors said was “the largest single source of subsidy revenue.”
An additional $295 million in taxpayer funding was not included in last year’s state budget.
And still ridership numbers continue to fall short of pre-COVID levels. In October 2023, average ridership was just 67 percent of the October 2019 number. On Regional Rail, ridership was just 56 percent of the pre-COVID average.
SEPTA’s cash crunch caused Democratic U.S. Reps. Madelaine Dean, Chrissy Houlahan, and Mary Gay Scanlon to send a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg last month asking for a bailout from federal taxpayers. Democratic Sens. Bob Casey Jr. and John Fetterman signed the letter, as did Rep. Dwight Evans (D-Philadelphia). “Without strong, sustained federal support, Pennsylvanians risk losing transit access entirely,” the lawmakers wrote. “As the Department of Transportation continues its critical work, we urge you to prioritize SEPTA and Pennsylvania’s transit systems.”
Now, there’s a chance that SEPTA may get a partial state bailout, if not a federal one.
That’s music to the ears of Democrats representing Delaware Valley in Harrisburg.
“From the ‘burbs to the city, SEPTA connects us to jobs, doctors’ appointments, recreation, shopping, and so much more,” state Sen. Maria Collett (D-Montgomery) posted on social media after learning of the federal lawmakers’ letter. She expressed gratitude for their “fighting for more federal dollars to keep this critical system afloat.”
State Rep. Morgan Cephas (D-Philadelphia) hoped Shapiro would go further. She said SEPTA needed even more cash to make sure more seniors and workers take mass transportation. “SEPTA alone moves over half a million people every day to their jobs, families, school, medical appointments, and more…”
The reasons for the declining ridership vary. Numerous complaints from riders to the Better Business Bureau focus on late buses or trains. Others complained that drivers focused more on beating red lights instead of serving customers.
Crime remains a big problem for SEPTA as well. Statistics show the number of disorderly conduct and public urination and defecation cases since 2019 have increased far higher than ridership, from 213 to more than 1,300 in 2022.
Robberies jumped from 118 in 2019 to 217 in 2021, while aggravated assaults almost doubled from 46 to 86 in the same period.
That meant significant increases in SEPTA expenses. Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) statistics show SEPTA spent $1.44 per passenger miles traveled on commuter rail in 2022 compared to 49 cents per passenger mile in 2013. For bus passengers, it was $2.66 in 2022 versus $1.09 in 2013. Streetcar rail was $2.87 in 2022 and only .94 cents in 2013.
Pennsylvania Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman (R-41) said SEPTA gets enough money.
“Supporting SEPTA’s request for increased state subsidy is a challenging argument to make, especially in light of Philadelphia District Attorney (Larry) Krasner’s inability to maintain law and order throughout America’s sixth largest city,” he said. “No amount of increased subsidy can restore customer confidence in making use of the network given the raging crime crisis Krasner perpetuates.”
The Commonwealth Foundation said the state government needs to take a new look at how it funds mass transit.
“Several years ago, state mass transit funding was moved offline into a special fund, taking a portion of sales tax revenue and Turnpike tolls to fund transit systems,” said Nathan Benefield, the Commonwealth Foundation’s senior vice president. “Unlike the General Fund, lawmakers don’t vote on this spending every single year.
“Should lawmakers examine how much state funding goes into those programs? We think they should.”
On Feb. 6, Josh Shapiro will hold his annual budget address.

4 Trade Ideas for McDonald's: Bonus Idea
Tumblr media
McDonald’s, $MCD, has been bucking the market trend, holding near all-time highs, in my opinion, due mostly to those fries. The stock price comes into the week pressing down against support though after a long red candle Friday and at the 50 day SMA. This is a fall out of the Bollinger Bands® which are opening lower. The RSI is falling to the bottom of the bullish zone with the MACD dropping but still positive.
There is support lower at 266 and 263 then 260 and 258 before 253.50 and 252 then 249. Resistance higher sits at 269.50 and 275.50 then 278.50 and 281.50. Short interest is low under 1%. The stock pays a dividend with an annual yield of 2.28% and has traded ex-dividend since November 30th. The company is expected to report earnings next on January 25, 2023.
The December 30 Expiry options chain show biggest open interest at the 260 and 250 strikes on the put side. On the call side it is biggest at 280, 285 and 290. The January chain has big open interest every 10 points starting at 270 going to 240 on the put side and from 260 to 290 on the call side. The January 27 chain is just getting started, but the February chain has biggest open interest at 260 and 250 on the put side, while at 280 and 300 on the call side.
McDonald’s, Ticker: $MCD
Tumblr media
Trade Idea 1: Sell the stock short on a move under 266 with a stop at 270.
Trade Idea 2: Sell the stock short on a move under 266 and add a December 30 Expiry 270/275 Call Spread ($1.65) while selling the January 250 Put ($1.24).
Trade Idea 3: Buy the December 30 Expiry 265/255 Put Spread ($2.47).
Trade Idea 4: Buy the January 13 Expiry 265/December 30 Expiry 255-January 13 Expiry 255 1×2 Put Spread ($2.60).

After reviewing over 1,000 charts, I have found some good setups for the week. This week’s list contains the first five below to get you started early. These were selected and should be viewed in the context of the broad Market Macro picture reviewed Friday which with the last FOMC meeting and Quad Witching done for the year, equity markets have resumed their moves lower.
Elsewhere look for Gold to consolidate in the uptrend while Crude Oil moves lower. The US Dollar Index continues the trend lower while US Treasuries stall in their short term uptrend. The Shanghai Composite looks to continue the short term uptrend while Emerging Markets consolidate in their short term move higher.
The Volatility Index looks to remain in the normal range making the path easier for equity markets to the upside. It also makes the Indexes more vulnerable to news based moves like we saw this week following the CPI report and FOMC meeting. Their charts showing that weakness from the short term view leaking into the longer term view now and the weekly pictures also roll over. On the shorter timeframe both the QQQ and IWM look vulnerable to a retest of the October low. The SPY looks slightly better, but only because it has further to go to retest it. Use this information as you prepare for the coming week and trad’em well.

Dunedin
Herrlich.

Okay looking at pricing shit because I'm in a pokemon mood so why not.
If we look to the anime, it seems the typical sale item we see for moomoo milk is supposed to be a pint. Meanwhile, the cost of a moomoo milk in the modern games is 600 pokedolllars (up from 500 in older games, alas). I tend to convert pokedollars to dollars by just putting a decimal place in two spaces to the left of the end, so that's $6 a pint. Since we're talking moomoo milk specifically, Miltank give 5+ gallons every day.
So! 8 pints in every gallon of milk means that you can expect about 40 pints per day, selling for $6 each, so $240 dollars worth of potential daily income per Miltank for the selling store. Now as for what this means for the farmer... Retail price for milk seems to be on average a little over double the price the farmer gets for selling it to retail in the first place, so we can expect the farmer is making about $108 per Miltank per day.
So the farmer is likely getting $2.70 per pint, probably kicks that number up if selling directly to buyers. Call it a minimum of $4 per pint of selling directly, a bit more money but for more work and a less guaranteed sale. 4 by 8 would be $32 dollars a gallon, round that down call it $25-28 due to the bulk buy. Whatever way, going via the pints we're talking $160 per day per Miltank if the farmer is selling directly to customers.
Of course this isn't daily profit per Miltank, because we don't know the expenses involved, but that's how much you could in theory bring in per pokemon.
So, what about from Skiddo and Gogoat?
First up we have to figure out what the price of non-Miltank milk is. We can assume, giving it's marketing and just how nutritious it is, plus how much cheaper Skiddo and Gogoat probably are to keep, that's probably cheaper, but by how much? If we assume we're mimicking the difference between an organic and non-organic product (not that this is the case, but basically 'super special product' vs 'general bitch product') then the difference looks to be a little over half-off the price.
So, a gallon of moomoo milk sold retail would probably be about $40 (cutting the price from that of 8 pints due to bulk purchase essentially), and we already determined an average local price of around $27. Assuming that's a little more than double the price of a gallon of non-Miltank milk then we're looking at an estimate of about $17 for the non-Miltank stuff buying it retail and about $12 from the farm directly. By the pint would be either $2.60 retail or $1.70 from the farmer.
Per Skiddo this would mean the farmer likely gets between $15.30 and $27.20 per day, while per Gogoat we're likely talking between $38.25 and $68 per day. Again total income, not profit, though the profit percentage is probably higher than for Miltank.
All this assuming, of course, that we're getting an accurate estimate and the cost difference isn't higher.
Either way, it seems straight milk is pricey in the pokemon world. At least if you base off the in-game numbers rather than real world numbers, and assuming the pokemon world doesn't have normal animals as has mostly been treated as the case since gen 3.
Presumably milk consumption is lower, which makes sense if pokemon milk is more nutritious and calorie-dense than real-world milk as Miltank's dex entries imply, you wouldn't need as much to get the same health effects, and especially since neither Miltank nor the Skiddo line are actually all that common in the places they're found. The Skiddo line are less expansive in range than Miltank is, and Miltank seems likely the more dangerous to keep with it's rolling attacks, high stats, and always being found around the dangerous Tauros. It would take a skilled hand to safely keep Miltank, especially before pokeballs were common, and Skiddo are restricted in range, so likely a lot of places just don't have traditions of consuming dairy, and those that do where these pokemon don't naturally occur likely had them as luxury imports.
So basically the pokemon world probably consumes less milk than our world, the milk they do consume has more calories and nutrients however, and so the price of milk in stores is much higher than we would expect. On the flip side however, if they can be acquired Skiddo are likely easy to care for for a relatively low care price and so are a very much viable option for home and community use if high dairy consumption is desired, saving money in the long run.
I have to assume that most dairy products in the Pokemon universe are either from Skiddo/Gogoat milk or made with a combination of the above and Miltank milk. Reasoning being that
1) We see a lot more usage of what we know is 100% moomoo milk than can be accounted for with just the MooMoo Ranch from Johto- even a large ranch of Miltank wouldn't be able to supply high amounts of milk for the entire planet on their own but we see this shit everywhere, implying that either A) MooMoo Ranch has franchised around the world, or B) they lost their copyright to common usage and moomoo milk has just become the term for Miltank milk.
2) Relating to the above, the focus on '100% moomoo milk' implies other varieties of milk from other pokemon, and the combination of those milks, with the only other pokemon that learn Milk Drink being the Skiddo line
3) The Skiddo line can be logically assumed to be the far cheaper pokemon to keep. Given enough sun and water Skiddo don't need to be fed, and we have no reason things are different for Gogoat. As a result the care costs for the line would be notably cheaper than keeping Miltank, aside from needing more space to get the same amount of milk, but even that depending on the cost of land could be made up for with not having to feed for half the year.

Over the past decade there has been a surge of interest in a novel approach to helping the world's poor: Instead of giving them goods like food or services like job training, just hand out cash — with no strings attached. Now a major new study suggests that people who get the aid aren't the only ones who benefit.
Edward Miguel, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley, and a co-author of the study, says that until now, research on cash aid has almost exclusively focused on the impact on those receiving the aid. And a wealth of research suggests that when families are given the power to decide how to spend it, they manage the money in ways that improve their overall well-being: Kids get more schooling; the family's nutrition and health improves.
But Miguel says that "as nonprofits and governments are ramping up cash aid, it becomes more and more important to understand the broader economy-wide consequences."
In particular, there has been rising concern about the potential impact on the wider community — the people who are not getting the aid. A lot of them may be barely out of poverty themselves.
"There's a fear that you just have more dollars chasing around the same number of goods, and you could have price inflation," says Miguel. "And that could hurt people who didn't get the cash infusion."
So Miguel and his collaborators teamed up to conduct an experiment with one of the biggest advocates of cash aid. It's a charity called GiveDirectly that, since 2009, has given out more than $140 million to impoverished families in various African countries.
The researchers identified about 65,000 households across an impoverished, rural area of Kenya and then randomly assigned them to various groups: those who got no help from GiveDirectly and a "treatment group" of about 10,500 families who got a one-time cash grant of about $1,000.
"That's a really big income transfer," notes Miguel. "About three-quarters of the income of the [recipient] households for a year on average." It also represented a flood of cash into the wider communities where they lived. "The cash transfers were something like 17% of total local income — local GDP," says Miguel.
Eighteen months on, the researchers found that, as expected, the families who got the money used it to buy lots more food and other essentials.
But that was just the beginning.
"That money goes to local businesses," says Miguel. "They sell more. They generate more revenue. And then eventually that gets passed on into labor earnings for their workers."
The net effect: Every dollar in cash aid increased total economic activity in the area by $2.60.
But were those income gains simply washed out by a corresponding rise in inflation?
"We actually find there's a little bit of price inflation, but it's really small," says Miguel. "It's much less than 1%."
