Chapter 2 - An affair to remember
A/N: Chapter 2, here we are! Leave a comment, heart or reblog if you enjoyed reading this. And no, I couldnât just settle on one photo.
Pairing: Tony Stark x F! Reader
Warning: 18+ loss of virginity, age gap, smut.
Word count: 4025
An affair to remember
After trying around eleven outfits and disliking each of them for some reason or other, you settled on a simple floral button down blouse with a pair of jeans. You werenât exactly sure if heâd asked you out on a date or the drink was just a friendly offer.
Of course itâs a date, you kissed him, Y/N, you thought to yourself. The mirror of your car revealed a visibly nervous reflection of you, fixing your hair multiple times, redoing your lipstick before you shook yourself mentally and drove off. Stark tower was a twenty minute drive from your apartment, and since it was a Sunday, traffic was in your favour thankfully.
By the time the tall, shiny building came into view, you had worked yourself up into taking this as a business meeting. You would be professional with the man and politely decline drinks if heâd offered. It would be inappropriate. You were sure he felt the same way.
Apparently your arrival was expected and welcomed in a pleasantly surprising way. A chubby, friendly looking man gave you a smile as you entered the foyer, introducing himself as Happy Hogan. He escorted you up to Mr. Starkâs floor or rather floors which was the penthouse of the ninety-three storeyed building.
The space was swanky, stylish and impeccably designed. Floor to ceiling windows that offered the most stunning views of the city, sleek and modern furniture that only screamed rich. You smoothed down your top and cleared your throat as you approached the outdoor seating area where Tony sat, wearing a dark coloured shirt and some jeans. Casual but still quite well put together, you thought.
âAh! Miss Y/L/N, you made it. Thanks, Happy.â
As your hands touched, the spark was back, one that made your insides buzz with excitement as you smiled at each other, letting your handshake extend for longer than necessary. It was only when Happy cleared his throat to announce his exit that you broke contact.
As he left, you considered bringing up the elephant in the room that loomed large, causing you to shuffle your weight from one foot to the other. Maybe if you addressed it right away, you could move on and be done with it? Not let the meeting be awkward for the rest of the evening.
Meanwhile, Tony was trying his best to focus on anything but your irresistible lips. He was drawn to them, it was quite unexplainable but he wanted nothing more than to have your lips on his again.
âSoâŚâ you started, twirling a lock of hair nervously between your fingers as you looked around, aware of his gaze following.
âSo.â
âI think we should talk about what happened. Look, it was a mistake, I donât know what came over me, I shouldnât have kissed you like that.â
Tony blinked his disappointment away and nodded in agreement. It was probably for the best.
âYeah, probably. Youâre right. Itâit was inappropriate.â
âYes! I mean, youâre friends with my Dad and also way out of my league.â
Your admission made him smirk, watching your cheeks flush with realization of what you had said.
âOut of your league huh? What is your league? Overzealous frat boys?â he teased.
âHaha. Youâre funny.â You rolled your eyes but hoped heâd drop the subject, thankfully he did, brushing it off as no harm done, much to your relief.
You unconsciously reached for your camera, thinking itâd be better if you steered the subject to the big photoshoot.
âYou brought your camera, why?â Tony murmured, pointing to the device sticking out from your bag.
âI just thought Iâd do a few test shots of the locations youâd be photographed in. Check the lighting and things. It will be a day shoot, right?â
Tony frowned, realizing he was yet to work out all of that or he probably had been sent the schedule but it slipped his mind. He also thought itâd be a good idea to inform Natalie about the change in photographer, since the magazine had been adamant on bringing their own person for the job.
âThatâs a good question, I have no idea. But donât worry, Iâll have my secretary send you the details.â
Humming in agreement, you asked if he could show you around the space, get an idea about what the vibe of the interview was going to be like. He happily agreed and began a tour of the place, explaining what housed on each floor, giving you a background about his business which you kinda already knew - one Google search was all it took to give the necessary details and some unnecessary ones as well. Tony had a notorious reputation of being a playboy, he certainly lived a very colourful life and had made no qualms about it.
Still, his eyes reflected the passion he had for technology as he spoke, the pride he took in pointing out all of the achievements Stark Industries had over the years.
Primarily a weapons manufacturer, he decided on taking a different route for his company after a particularly life-changing incident in Afghanistan. The man was abducted by a terrorist group called Ten Rings and kept in a cave for three months.
While how he escaped remained a mystery to the world, his return had been miraculous. He led you back to his grand living room, gesturing you to take a seat.
âYou said an explosive blew up not far from you and yet you came out of that cave scratch free? How?â you asked about his incredulous story.
âNot just any explosive, it was one of my own creations. And I never said it was scratch free.â
He seemed to ponder for a while, looking around as if to check if anyone was spying on you two before he reached for the buttons of his shirt, undoing them to reveal what looked like a circular battery-like device emitting a faint blue light. It seemed as if it was jammed in his chest, the peripheral skin scarred.
âWhat is that?â
He chuckled as your eyes went wide, glancing down at the device that was keeping him alive.
âItâs an electromagnet that essentially keeps the shrapnel from reaching my heart. Itâs called an arc reactor, there is another one of these, a much bigger one that powers this building.â he explained, buttoning his shirt back up and letting you know how he managed to power it with the help of a man named Ho Yinsen in the caves.
If it werenât for that little device, and the brave sacrifice of Yinsen, the world wouldâve lost Tony Stark and you wouldâve never met this incredible man.
âAnd here I assumed you sold your soul to the devil.â
Your words made him laugh, feeling a little flutter in that battery-operated heart. He wasnât sure what made him reveal the arc reactor to you, he hadnât let anyone see it, except for Rhodey since he found him in the desert. Something about you reassured him that you were trustworthy. You were like a breath of fresh air.
After returning, Tony Stark had dedicated much of his business to RnD in the field of science and technology. You listened with keen interest, getting to know the man better with each passing moment, you couldnât help but admire him for all the success heâd achieved.
âGosh. Where are my manners? I havenât offered you anything to drink, Miss Y/L/N.â Tony exclaimed, right as one of his bots whirred in with a silver tray that had a bottle of champagne on ice with two glasses.
âRobots bringing in champagne? You planned this, didnât you?â you chuckled, finding it rather hard to refuse it. I mean, it wouldnât really hurt having one glass. Right?
âIâm just trying to make a good first impression.â he shrugged, popping the bottle open expertly before filling the two glasses.
âWhy? Youâre not an overzealous frat boy.â you teased, taking a sip of the champagne while holding his gaze.â
âOh honey, Iâm much better.â
There it was again.
The tingle of excitement you felt deep within your belly every time you had a banter. Even though you wouldnât admit to yourself, you were attracted to the man. He was just so sure of who he was, he carried himself with a certain confidence that was quite sexy.
For the next couple of hours, you two spoke about anything and everything, making you realize how easy he was to talk to despite the age difference. You spoke about your relationship with your parents, your eyes lit up each time you mentioned how your father had been your biggest cheerleader while Tony listened with a soft smile on his face. His phone kept buzzing every now and then and he kept dismissing it. When it rang for the fourth time, you thought it was time for you to head back since youâd stayed for longer than you had intended to.
âYou should get that, itâs probably important. Iâll get going.â
Tony stood up with you, not really ready to let you go just yet, though the incessant buzzing of his Stark pad was hard to ignore.
âAre you sure I canât persuade you for another glass? Perhaps some wine? Happy could drive you home later..â
The offer was tempting, and you werenât ready to say goodbye either but you had to. You would see him next week anyways.
âThank you, but I think I should head back, itâs late. What youâve done with Stark Industries is truly remarkable. Thank you for sharing your story with me. Youâre an incredible man, Tony. I donât think you give yourself enough credit for it.â You smiled, meaning every word youâd said.
He had been complimented many times before but something about your words made him believe it. He felt his heart dance a little with joy.
âSee you on Wednesday then?â
âUh yeah. See you.â
Deciding on a friendly hug, you wrapped your arms around him, breathing in his scent, something so oddly comforting about it. Smiling to yourself when you felt Tonyâs breath against your hair, you pulled back only to find him staring at your lips. You kissed him on the cheek quickly, and stepped back, not trusting yourself to not make the same impulsive decision no matter how much you wanted to do it.
âBye, Tony.â
âGoodbye, Y/N.â
He watched you until the elevator doors closed, leaving you to let out a sigh and lean against the cold metal. The whole way down, you contemplated what it would be like to kiss Tony, recalling the moment your lips had touched the other night. It only lasted a second but it hadnât left your mind ever since.
You wanted to do it again.
You wanted more. Him. In every way possible. It was like a need you felt that drew you to him, like a moth to a flame. You knew it would be dangerous and yet it was impossible to resist the temptation.
It was probably why you decided to go with your instincts and press the button that led you back to Tony Stark.
He had his back to you when you reached his floor again, you saw the same flame of desire dancing in his eyes that danced in yours as he turned to find you standing there. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation as you took long strides and he met you halfway, lips colliding in an instant.
You felt your breath knocked out of your chest as you kissed Tony Stark, a rush of excitement surging through your body as his arms went around you to pull you flush against his chest, keeping you there. You gasped at the intensity and Tony used the opportunity to slide his tongue in your mouth, deepening the kiss.
A lingering taste of champagne mixed with a hint of coffee is what you tasted as you gave in and your hands found their way around his neck, carding through the hair at the nape of his neck.
Not realizing he had walked you back until you were met with the cool wall behind, you felt Tony smile against your lips before they trailed lower, along your jaw, down to your neck. Letting out a soft moan, you tugged on his hair silently signaling him to not stop. Desire flooded through you and gathered between your legs as he continued nipping at your skin, reveling in the little sounds you made. His hands slid up your body to brush against your breasts, his thumb deliberating until your nipples stood erect against his touch.
You felt goose pimples across your body where he touched you as his hands slipped inside your blouse, wanting to feel more of your skin. Wasting no time, Tony unbuttoned it hastily and threw it to the side, bringing his lips over your collarbone, littering small kisses along it.
Letting out a sigh, you felt his hands toy with the hem of your jeans as his mouth closed over your bra-covered nipple. You werenât alien to the feeling but your eyes fluttered open when Tony unzipped your jeans and let it slide down your legs.
âBedroom?â he asked huskily after youâd stepped out of them, leaving you in a matching pair of lingerie. You managed a nod before following him inside his bedroom, a heady cocktail of desire and lust swimming in your mind as the man gently laid you against the soft mattress.
âSo gorgeous, Y/N.â
He crawled over you with purpose, his gaze darkening as he took in your form before his lips crashed against yours once more. The kiss had more urgency this time, while he prodded your legs open to allow you to feel his growing erection.
You let out another gasp feeling his hardness brush against your core, a rush of ardor followed by sudden insecurity made its presence known as you sat up on your elbow, breaking the kiss.
âTony, Iâve never umâI mean Iâm aââ you fumbled with the choice of words, heat creeping up to your cheeks as you tried to convey you had never done this before. Tony rested his arms on either side, still breathing heavily as he took your words in, his own heartbeat pounding against his ears while blood had rushed southward.
âDo you want to stop? We can if youâre uncomfortable.â
You shook your head, not wanting to back out this but you had apprehensions which he could sense. Gently caressing your bare legs, he rested his forehead against yours.
âTell me what you want.â
You answered by pulling him in for another hungry kiss and wrapping your legs around him to let him know the answer.
âWords, sweetheart.â he murmured, rolling his hips towards your center once again.
âI want you, Tony. I want this.â you managed, unbuttoning his shirt quickly, surprised at your assertion. In the darkness of the room, the blue glow emitted from his arc reactor acted like a source of light, rendering his features luminescent.
With a couple of hasty kisses against your lips, he made you lie back before trailing his path of open-mouthed kisses down your neck, discarding your bra to expose you some more. Cupping one in a hand, tweaking the nipple between his fingers, Tony closed his mouth around the other one, coaxing out a needy whine.
Treating both of them equally, he allowed his hand to travel lower to cup your sex over your panties, smirking as he found them already damp. You felt your breathing turn shallower as his fingers traced along your clothed slit, brushing against your bundle of nerves every so often.
âI want to taste you, sweetheart. Want to know if you taste just as sweet down there as you do here.â Tonyâs words turned your insides to jelly, his lips sucking on your tongue as he slowly peeled the last remaining cloth from your body.
Your heart hammered inside your ribcage as he kissed his way down your body, settling between your legs, holding them apart as you instinctively went to close them.
âLie back, close your eyes.â
You did as you were told, wetting your bottom lip with your tongue as you felt his breath down there, the air making your glistening folds shine eagerly. He first laid small kisses along your inner thigh before his tongue peeked out to tease you open. You let out a cry when his tongue licked a strip up your entrance, the action wildly exciting and new for nobody had gone down on you before. You felt him draw small circles around your clitoris, sending waves of desire down your spine as you squirmed for more.
âOh my God!â you panted, anchoring your hands in his hair while he continued.
âDoes it feel good, sweetheart?â he did everything in his might to not devour you the way he wanted to, knowing youâd probably feel overwhelmed if he did. In all honesty, your scent drove him mad and your taste was irresistible, he couldnât get enough.
âYes! Feels so good, Tony!â
Your words encouraged him to continue the assault, every lick and nudge drawing the sweetest of sounds from you. Your wetness gathered on his finger as he traced a line along it, pushing it inside your heat, grunting as he felt your walls immediately clamp around it.
âRelax, Y/N.â Tony repeated, slowly stroking you with his finger, getting you ready for his cock that strained against his pants. Your slickness helped when he added another finger, drawing out yet another moan as you felt an increase in pressure down there.
His thumb brushed against your clit while he massaged your walls open for him, making you lose all sense of coherence as you felt something building inside of you. The familiar tightness low in your belly when you pleasured yourself when alone, only this time, it felt like it had increased by tenfold. Tony held you down as your hips rose up from the bed in their own accord, matching his ministrations. As your moans got louder, you sensed you were close, tugging on his hair once more, you felt your walls tighten around his fingers.
âLet go, Y/N. Come for me.â
And you did. It felt like a tight-wound rope snapped, giving way for an intense wave of pleasure that shook your body. It felt exhilarating at the same time unreal, like you were floating away on a cloud of bliss. When you came down from your high, Tony had discarded his pants and was slanting his lips over yours, letting you taste some of your essence.
Feeling bolder now, you reached between your bodies to stroke his hard cock over his boxers, hearing his breathing hitch.
âRemove them.â He ordered, aiding you when pushed them down his legs to let his cock spring free.
You felt your walls clamp around nothing at the sight of him, he was big, making you wonder if it would hurt when you finally had him.
Reaching over to the nightstand, you watched Tony tear open a foil of condom and roll it over his length. Settling between your legs once more, he kissed you again, this time with a languid urgency.
You tensed up as his erection poked against your core, sensing it Tony broke the kiss to look into your eyes for signs of apprehension.
âWe can still stop if you want to, Y/N. Just say the word.â
Appreciative of how considerate he was being, you knew you were ready. You wanted him, as much as he wanted you. Wrapping your fingers around his length delicately, you stroked him a few times, watching his mouth fall open.
âI want you to fuck me, Tony.â
You whispered, lying back against the pillows and allowing him to take control. He lined up against your entrance, gathering your arousal as he went before slipping just the head of cock inside.
âThis will hurt a little. Breathe through it for me?â
Nodding, you felt him push in further, letting out a grunt at your tightness. He was right, the girth of him sliding inside your channel felt odd but electrifying. Tony felt his cock push past the barrier as he entered you, giving you time to get used to the feeling.
You let out a cry as he bottomed out, the feeling of fullness overwhelmed your senses as the pain stung.
Retracting only a little at first, Tony drove his hips back into you, repeating the action a few more times as you felt pain receding and giving way to a new kind of pleasure.
âMore.â You begged, digging your fingers into his back as he complied.
Your tight heat felt so amazing around his cock, Tony felt himself getting lost in the feeling. Steadily he set a pace, pushing you against the mattress as his hips speared into you, drawing sinful moans.
The feeling of being wound up again took over, Tony smirked as you wrapped both your legs around his hips tighter, the new angle making his cock reach deeper inside your pussy.
âYouâre so tight, Y/N. Youâre close again, arenât you?â He breathed, increasing the force of his thrusts to make his pubic bone brush against your clit.
âYes! Iâm so close. Please, Tony.â You whimpered, moving your hips to match up as sounds of your combined pleasure filled the room.
Reaching between your bodies, he teased your clit while driving in and out of your sopping heat, aiding your second orgasm. You felt yourself clamp around his cock before the same feeling of euphoria took over, making your walls spasm out of control.
Vision blurred and body convulsed under the intense waves of pleasure coursing through your veins as you rode out your high. Tony grunted against your ear as your spasming walls fueled his climax, causing his balls to tighten before he emptied himself in the condom, holding you close. Gingerly, he pulled out of you, making you wince at the sudden emptiness you felt.
âYou okay?â
âMore than okay.â you grinned lazily, accepting the soft kiss he offered.
As tired as you were, you didnât protest when he nudged you to get up, leading you to the shower for a quick clean up, the soreness between your legs evident.
You exchanged several kisses in the shower, the hot water working wonders on relaxing your muscles, making it evident you were in need of a nap soon.
Once fully dressed, Tony resisted the urge to make you stay again and walked you out while your car stood, waiting. He could sense you were preoccupied with something since you hadnât said much.
âTony, about the photoshoot..â
âOh no, thatâs no longer required. I just wanted to sleep with you.â He shrugged, making your stomach drop for a second before he chuckled, enjoying his joke way more than you did.
âCome on, Y/N. I asked you because youâre the person for the job. This doesnât change anything.â He smiled, wrapping his arms around your waist to give you a quick kiss.
That definitely quietened your insecurities, but it didnât ease the thought that you had lost your virginity to this gorgeous man who was not only older, but very good friends with your parents. If they ever found outâŚ
On your way back, you also thought about how youâd break the news to Izzy, there was not a thing you kept from her. And if you didnât, you were positive sheâd find out somehow, she was quite shrewd about these things.
As uncertain as you were about it all, you couldnât shake off the fact that you had slept with Tony Stark.
And it was fantastic.
Changing into comfortable clothes, you lay in bed, staring at the ceiling with a smile that refused to leave your face before deciding on pulling out your phone.
Cocky billionaires are still not my type, you knowâŚ
You texted Tony once you reached home, a big grin on your face, waiting for his response as the three dots appeared almost instantly on your screen.
Oh I know. Maybe Iâll change your mind. Actually Iâm pretty sure of it.
Thoughts?

Some major hits and some major misses amongst these ones
21) Thirteen Storeys by Jonathan Sims (5â)
5 Stars no notes.Â
This was great. I donât have a lot else to say to be honest. Itâs sort of like a horror portmanteau in book form. We get thirteen stories which could all individually be stand alones (although as we go through we start to see things interconnecting) from different people living in or connected to this big tower block who all experience some kind of paranormal activity, with it all eventually culminating in the final story where all the characters are brought together. We know going into the book that whatever is happening is going to culminate in the death of the billionaire who owns the building and lives in the rooftop penthouse, and the story is about the build up to that final climax. Fundamentally itâs about class divide, worker exploitation, and the sacrifices the rich are happy to make to stay getting richer. Eat the rich, basically. Itâs really, really good. I gave it 5 stars. Definitely check it out.Â
Also as a side note I just really appreciate that the back pages give credit to everybody involved in the book production. Editors, cover designers, marketing team, everything. I just think thatâs really cool and I wish more authors did this.
22) Nod by Adrian Barnes (4â)
This was a really cool concept and also very simple. One day, everybody around the world, with the exception of a small handful of people, stops sleeping. Like itâs so simple but is that not one of the most horrifying things you can imagine?Â
The story follows Paul, one of the few people still able to sleep, as he witnesses the rapid breakdown in society as insanity starts to set in amongst those who canât sleep, including his wife, Tanya. Thereâs not a lot more that I can say without giving too much of the book away, but just know that if youâre a fan of creepy cults, youâll probably enjoy this. And as a person who has battled with insomnia before, this was both fun and terrifying in equal measures.Â
I gave this 4 stars. Itâs quite a quick read, I think I read most of it on a train journey to somewhere. Would have liked to explore the whole cult more, but the whole book is only set across 24 days so I get why itâs a little on the shorter side.Â
23) How to sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix (5â)
This is a little gem of a book. Iâm not going to go too much into what happens because the synopsis on the back is also quite vague, and I think part of the joy of this one is not really knowing what the hell is going to happen next.Â
To give as brief a summary as possible, our main character, Louise, gets the news that her parents have died, and has to return to her hometown to sell her childhood home, all while furiously butting heads with her younger brother, Mark. Itâs a horror story, and itâs very creepy, but at its heart itâs a really beautiful story about grief and generational trauma. Really well done, really beautiful, I gave it 5 stars and I highly highly recommend giving it a read. Iâll definitely be picking up more books by this author in the future.Â
24) Among the Living by Tim Lebbon (2â)
Taking a sharp and veering downhill plummet, we have this book. This book pissed me off. Iâm not really sure how to go about explaining why it pissed me off without spoiling things.
The premise of this book is that two groups of people: a team of cavers searching for rare, valuable minerals, and a group of environmental activists trying to stop the mining, find themselves completely stranded in the middle of an arctic island after discovering that a cave which has recently been uncovered from under the thawing ice was harbouring an ancient, deadly, contagious disease. Good premise. Horrific circumstances in an isolated snowy setting.Â
Again, Iâm trying to think of a way to explain my beef with this book without giving the whole thing away but⌠letâs just say this book promised something and then never delivered on it. Thereâs no suspense in this book because at all times we are explicitly aware of who is infected and who isnât, and you keep expecting the story to throw a curveball and reveal that thereâs another infected member of the group, or, if you wanted to go even darker, that they just killed someone who wasnât infected at all, but it just⌠never does? I donât know, it was very bizarre. I gave it 2 stars because even though it pissed me off, I liked the concept and the actual infection itself was really cool and gross to read about. Honestly you could probably write the worst book of all time but if it has good gore in it Iâll probably still give it a pity star.Â
25) 19 Claws and a Black Bird by Augustina Bazterrica (3â)
This is another short story collection, it got my standard 3 stars. I picked it up because these were all written by the author of Tender is the Flesh, which I really enjoyed last year.Â
The stories are very short, like, some of them are literally just a page, and⌠theyâre fine. Theyâre alright. None of them massively stood out to me but none of them were bad either. It was a bit of a letdown after Tender is the Flesh because that book got such a visceral reaction from me, and I think maybe that hindered my enjoyment of this book a bit because Iâd set the bar so high in my own head. That and the fact that both the author blurbs and the synopsis on the back cover talk at length about how brutal and gorey these stories are when, for me, there was really nothing that shocking in there. But donât get it twisted, this was still a fun read. The way she writes horror is so fresh and creative, and I really love her writing style. The stories in here are really interesting and unique, just nothing that hit me in my chest the same way her novel did. It wonât stop me from instantly grabbing anything with her name on the cover in the future though.Â
26) House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson (4.5â)
Rejoice, for we have reached the toxic yuri horror. I really loved this, I donât know what more to tell you. I had an absolute blast reading this.Â
The story is set in a world where rich, powerful families (houses, as theyâre known) supposedly maintain their health through regular consumption of blood, which they get from their bloodmaids. The bloodmaids are women hired under a contract of so many years to live in the house, be fed and cared for, and have blood regularly taken for the head of the house to drink, then, once their contract is over, theyâre given a massive pension and allowed to live out the rest of their life in luxury. Sexy stuff. At the beginning of the book our main character, Marion, applies for a position as a bloodmaid for Countess Lisavet, the heir of the House of Hunger. But when she arrives she notices that strange things are afoot as bloodmaids keep disappearing.Â
Itâs really good. The characters, including the side characters, are really well fleshed out and nuanced. The story is really good with a lot of twists and turns that I didnât see coming. Thereâs blood letting and lesbian sex, need I go on? At times the writing was a little sloppy and could have done with some final editing, but nothing that ruined the reading experience for me. I gave it 4.5 stars.Â
27) Song of Kali by Dan Simmons (DNF)
I read 36% of this book and then gave up, for two reasons.Â
Number 1: This book is set in Kolkata, and itâs specifically about a white guy travelling to Kolkata to do some journalism or something, I donât really remember. But the way every single brown person this guy sees or interacts with is described just gave me the ick. And, as you can imagine, he sees a lot of brown people! That and the way the city in general is described. Iâm no expert, but it didnât feel good when I was reading it.Â
Number 2: It was fucking boring. 36% of the way through and literally nothing had fucking happened. We got one scene where a guy was explaining some human sacrifice ritual he witnessed, but beyond that it was literally just this white dude sitting in various meetings. Like, my brother in Christ, if I wanted to read about some guys meeting minutes I would get an office job. Can we please be for real?Â
So, yeah, this was dogshit, in my personal opinion. Thatâs my review.Â
28) The Way of All Flesh by Ambrose Perry (DNF)
This is the one that was technically a DNF but not really, and what I mean by that is that by about 60% of the way through reading this, I got impatient and basically just skipped ahead to the final chapters to see if Iâd correctly guessed who the killer was. I had, just for the record.Â
My issue with this book is that it could have been half the length. We spend chapter after chapter after chapter going round and round in circles waiting for the characters to come to very obvious conclusions. Like, if I said to you that this book involves the suspicious deaths of several women, one, a sex worker who had just requested a large sum of money and expressed her intentions to flee the city before her death, and another, a maid who had apparently run away from home, are there any possible theories already jumping into your head? Because for me at least, I was thinking this is probably some back alley abortion method gone wrong literally after reading the first chapter. When I tell you at 60% through this book our main characters had just reached that same conclusion. Fucking hell.Â
Anyway, even though I did read the ending, I skipped over about 35% to get there, so Iâm still counting it as a DNF.Â
29) A House with Good Bones by T.Kingfisher (5â)
Another T.Kingfisher number that, to the shock of nobody by this point in my life, got 5 stars from me. I think I might be in love with this woman. T.Kingfisher if youâre out there⌠Should I do a video just about her books? Iâve read five now, another one of which is coming up later in this list. Let me know if you wanna hear me wax lyrical about her writing for an hour.Â
Anyway, this story is about Sam, a sort of bug archeologist type person, who has moved back to her motherâs home for a few months. When she gets there, however, she finds that her mother has restored almost everything back to the way it was when the house belonged to her dead grandmother. She seems constantly paranoid and on edge, and thereâs a lot of weird shit afoot involving ladybirds and grandmaâs precious rose garden. Itâs exactly the kind of whimsical horror with loveable characters and unsettling body horror that I expect from Kingfisherâs books at this point, and, yeah, as I said, I really loved it. This one has some good exploration of generational trauma, which you might have noticed by now is something I seem to gravitate to in my books. If my therapist is watching this right now, donât even worry about it.Â
30) A Botanical Daughter by Noah Medlock (5â)
Oh my god. If you know, you know. This book altered my brain chemistry and changed me fundamentally as a person. Itâs gorgeous. I canât even really put into words why I loved it so much, it just felt like it was written specifically to scratch every itch in my neurodivergent brain. Uh, itâs signed. You know itâs serious when the author says youâre passionate. We have a fun parasocial relationship on twitter where he retweets my art and I think to myself that we should be best friends but anyway, weâre not talking about me.Â
The actual story is about two men, Gregor, a botanist, and Simon, a taxidermist, who wind up combining their skills to create, you guessed it, a botanical daughter. I do love a sentient fungus, and if youâve read and enjoyed T.Kingfisherâs What Moves the Dead youâll probably love this and vice versa. God, itâs so hard to give a concise summary without just waxing lyrical for a few hours. Iâll probably make a video just to yap about this book at some point. But in a nutshell, itâs gay, itâs toxic, the plant girl is a lesbian, itâs funny but also beautiful, itâs found family, thereâs good gore, a man gets his face ripped off. What more can I say? The writing style might not be for everyone but like, that could not be me. If you use the word âsquelchedâ as a verb that is like the equivalent of proposing marriage to me. So Noah Medlock if youâre reading this (and he may well be because weâre basically best friends on twitter) my answer is yes.Â
Favourite book of the year bar none.

SIC PARVIS MAGNA {Charac. Profiles Pt. 2}
an au by @that-irrelevant-ricecakeaddict & @seventhcallisto
SERIES MASTERLIST, Charac. Profiles Pt. 1
Jeong Yunho {Hans}
[24 years old]

(based on Helena Bertinelli, Huntress)
Backstory: He grew up with police officer parents who had interests in car mechanics, so he naturally picked up the same hobbies. Eventually started making weapons and studying art of weaponry as well as hopology. His family moved to Seoultham when he was a young teenager, where his parents got killed. Yunho had to resort to crime and smuggling to survive. He hated himself for committing crime (out of love for his deceased parents), hence he adopted the alias Huntsman (later renamed as Hans when he met the others) to gatecrash dangerous weapon dealings he hears of. Later on, he met Hongjoong through the New World weapons black market and joined him after hearing about Birds of Prey.
>Originally named Huntsman, Mingi pestered him to change it because it sounded too "intimidating"
>Co-founder of Limitless Mechanics, a 2 storey mechanics shophouse located next to the entrance of Felony Alley
>Lives at the shophouse with San
>Used to be an infamous illegal arms dealer, still has contacts in the intergalactic black market even as a vigilante
>Can be very protective of his members
>Resident Fix-It Felix of the team
>Spends most of his time tinkering at the shop with San
>Quickly grew attached to Mingi when he joined the team, and likes brainstorming new gadget ideas with him
>Signature weapon is a crossbow that he's always finding new features to add to it
Choi San {Hawke}
[23 years old]

(based on Shayera Thal, Hawkgirl)
Backstory: An alien warrior from planet Aurora who designed high tech weaponry from the planet's raw materials. His first encounter with a human was when he met Yunho, who was on a smuggling mission to Aurora. San assumed that Yunho was another greed-filled thief who came to his home planet to steal, but became friends with him when he found out they had a shared interest in weapons design. He was intrigued by Yunho's stories of life on Earth and decided to follow him back.
>Registered in Seoultham ("Omg my first human identity!!") thanks to Mingi pulling some strings
>On Aurora, he was known as San Hol, but he adopted the surname Choi after coming to Earth because he wanted to blend in more
>Co-founder of Limitless Mechanics (with Yunho)
>Has large feathered wings that he can shrink and hide
>A strong fighter with extensive knowledge on weapon design
>Can come off as very earnest and innocent
>Spends his time with Yunho at the shop or following around his other members to their activities out of curiosity
>Has very eccentric tastes due to growing up on a completely different planet
>Fix-It Felix pt. 2
Choi Jongho {Nightingale}
[22 years old]

(based on Dinah Lance, Black Canary)
Backstory: An only child living in a small town with his parents, he was born with a mutated voice box that allowed him to physically manifest soundwaves with his voice. He accidentally hurt his father with it when he was a kid, and started to see it as a curse for the majority of his life and didn't speak much out of fear of causing harm to others. At 18, he moved away from his parents to live in Seoultham to lay low. He eventually heard from word of mouth about Mingi's expertise in tech, and went to him for help in building soundwave-muting technology. Mingi did built a device for him, but also encouraged him to embrace his ability and got him to join the Birds of Prey.
>Works as a barista at Nightbrew Cafe
>Lives with Wooyoung in a suite located on Diamond Street, which is just across Felony Alley (16 Diamond Street, #1, 1117)
>Occasionally does singing gigs at bars, and is known by regulars as Lucifer's Bard due to how sinfully addicting his voice is
-He started singing from a young age as he thought it would help to build control of his ability
>Wears a necklace made of a metal that absorbs excess vibrations, allowing him to speak normally without having to constantly watch his volume (takes it off sometimes to fight)
>when fighting crime, he wears a cloth mask made of a special fabric that San brought from Aurora. It allows his voice to pass through without interference while still providing coverage for his identity
>Came off as uptight to the other members at first, but Mingi brought out his real fun-loving and laid back personality
Jung Wooyoung {Kitty}
[23 years old]

(based on Selina Kyle, Catwoman)
Backstory: Grew up in Seoultham and got by with his good looks and street smarts. At 17, he started to date a rich young man who would often abuse and berate him. Soon after, Wooyoung was kicked out of his house by his parents who found him disgraceful, and was stuck with his then-boyfriend who eventually broke up with him and left him alone and penniless. Wooyoung took revenge by breaking into his now ex's penthouse and stealing all his expensive possessions, which was when he developed a knack for stealing. He was living off stolen goods when he met San (who had just arrived on earth) and befriended him. San, being the sweetheart he is, invited Wooyoung to join the Birds of Prey, which Wooyoung, albeit with some hesitation, obliged to.
>Works as a museum curator at the Visage of History Museum
>Lives with Jongho in their suite (rent is paid off mostly by Wooyoung's salary and "souvenirs" from his occasional heists on local robbers)
>His alias, Kitty, is known by locals and authorities as a genderless vigilante who is efficient and quick, as well as extremely slippery and hard to catch
>Used to steal from the wealthy out of desperation to survive and was an infamous cat burglar, but stopped after joining Birds of Prey
>Has very expensive taste and splurges the team's money (not that they mind, though)
>He occasionally ambushes and robs the illegal jewellery smugglers that he hears about from his police friend Changbin and the museum staff
>Knows reader through Taehyun and Yeonjun
>very physically affectionate, often subjects the rest of the team to overly dramatic displays of affection

Get To Know Me Tag
Tagged by @telomeke @lurkingshan @my-rose-tinted-glasses @he-is-lightning-in-a-bottle and @hyeoni-comb thank you all! đ
Do you make your bed?
I like a messy bed, it feels more welcoming to me somehow. The only time I make my bed is when I'm without heat and it's winter, then you gotta do it to keep in any residual warmth! But normally I'd rather keep everything loose.
Whatâs your favorite number?
I....don't think I have one? Is this a thing people have, how do you choose?
What is your job?
I manage a team of Product Owners in the Operations division of a multinational company. In other words, I go to a lot of meetings.
If you could go back to school, would you?
Absolutely not. Beyond the fact that I was formerly a substantive editor of university textbooks, which included both editing the textbook content and sometimes writing their ancillaries (tests, powerpoint slides, etc.) so it feels like I took first-year Sociology at least ten times, I just don't love formalized education. I love learning but on my own terms and at my own pace.
Can you parallel park?
I can't drive at all! Technically I learned how, took lessons and everything, but never got my license.
A job you had that would surprise people?
Hmm. I was a call center person for half a day, it was terrible and I left without getting paid for the work I did because I was so eager to get out of there I didn't want to fight them for my pay (even though I needed the money which is why I was there in the first place). I hate phone calls, I can't hear well on the phone, and it was clear the call center script was designed to be exploitative. It was one of the worst jobs for me I could have taken lol
Do you think aliens are real?
I think it's extremely likely!
Can you drive a manual car?
Nope, even when I learned, it was only on an automatic.
Whatâs your guilty pleasure?
I'm not guilty about it but I can decimate an entire family size mac and cheese when I'm feeling down.
Tattoos?
I have 3 tattoos; one on each foot and one on the back of my neck. They form a rainbow.
Favorite color?
Blue-green! The shade of preference for any given moment varies, but anything in the region from mint to aqua to teal to turquoise will do; I love them all.
Favorite type of music?
My music taste varies widely but the common denominators are 1) fast tempo or upbeat, 2) solid harmonies, and 3) if there's a tempo or key change I am doubly sold.
Do you like puzzles?
Love puzzles of all kinds. I have a collection of jigsaw puzzles I do regularly, and word puzzles, logic puzzles, sudoku type stuff is all very fun. I don't make a lot of time for them but I do them occasionally and always enjoy it.
Any phobias?
I am afraid of falling. Not heights, but falling. The difference is: I can lean over the railing at the top of a 20-storey building or walk on a glass floor over a big drop and just feel a minor thrill, but am terrified to the point of maybe crying if I have to balance on a single step of a ladder or walk across a patch of ice. I had several brushes with death related to falling when I was a kid, and a few bad falls that caused injury as an adult, so it makes sense. Luckily I am pretty tall so I rarely have to do any kind of ladder-ing!
Favorite childhood sport?
American-style tackle football. We used to play at lunch on the pavement because the soccer kids got the field; we played in all seasons including snow, and we did it for love of the sport. I loved it a lot.
Do you talk to yourself?
Occasionally I'll provide a little commentary on what's happening aloud to myself; but I don't really have fully conversations.
What movies do you adore?
I have loved a lot of movies in my time! A few random ones that come to mind right now because I've been thinking about them for whatever reason are Saving Face (2004), Monster (2023), Practical Magic (1998), Moonlight (2016), and Clue (1985).
Coffee or tea?
Despite my username being a type of tea, in this as in all things I am a perfect Kinsey 3. Love both equally and drink a ton of both (coffee more regularly, tea in greater volume).
First thing you wanted to be growing up?
Lifeguard, I think! And then when I was in elementary school I wanted to edit textbooks (I was that kid who got annoyed whenever there were mistakes), so I did actually get to do my childhood dream job.
No pressure tags just going with vibes based on who I've interacted with recently (if you've done this already tag me in the comments!): @rocketturtle4 @visualtaehyun @sollucets @troubled-mind @jimmysea @ginnymoonbeam

Abandoned Neighbourhood - House 8
You can find the video tour here!!
youtube
Moving along we take a look at the master bedroom along with some more of the main floor!!
Partially updated from its original 1988 build this is the eighth house in the my series of the abandoned neighbourhood. It was a two-storey brown brick house with a partially updated interior that still had almost all of the original stained hardwood details such as the staircase and floors. Rooms like the kitchen and the bathrooms look to have been updated once since it was built but in a tasteful way. Unfortunately like many of the other homes on the abandoned street, the basement was flooded, so we only get a glimpse of what it may have looked like.
Once located down a mature tree lined street and surrounded by forest and walking trails was a group of 14 abandoned luxury houses. They were bought by a developer for prices ranging from $3 million - $8 million dollars. The homeowners were given two years to live in the homes rent free before they were demolished.
Westford Homes was the original builder of the neighbourhood in the 80s, there were 5 different designs of homes to choose from. All of the houses were built in 1988 and each one had a single brick with the builders name on it.
There was opposition to the new development that will replace this one but ultimately it was approved. The current amendment allows for 139 new homes to be built and the size of the houses will be up to 4000 sq/ft. The neighbourhood is already long since sold out and the price of the homes was around the $2 million mark.

Brodswoth Hall
Hi guys!!Â
I'm sharing this english mansion based on the floor plans you will find in the pictures.Â
I completed most of the principal spaces in the first floor but the floor plan will help you identify the rest of the rooms.Â
Hope you enjoy furnishing and playing with it. If you share stories with the house, please tag me. I love the stories you creat for your sims!!!Â
SOME HISTORY DETAILS:Â
Designed in the Italianate style by Philip Wilkinson, the Hall is constructed in ashlar limestone, some quarried on the estate, with lead and slate roofs. Stonework, windows and interior fittings were reused from the older building.[1] The building is "T" shaped with the servants quarters forming the upright. The main block, forming the cross-bar, is 2-storey rectangular range having 9-bay frontage.[7] The house has more than 30 rooms, ranging from grand reception rooms with original furnishings to the servants' quarters. The house is surrounded by Victorian period gardens, which are used for special events throughout the summer.
The house is noted for Charles Sabine Thellusson's collection of paintings and sculptures, including a large collection of Italian sculptures bought at the Dublin International Exhibition of 1865.[1]

You  will need lots of CC for it to work properly, mostly from Felixandre, TheJim, SYB, Aggresivve Kitty, among others.
Please let me know if you like it :)
Enjoy!

The Impact of Roof Design on Your House Facade
When we talk about building a house, the first thing that catches people's attention is the front structure of the house, which is called House Facade. In cities like Brisbane, where modern ideas and styles are important to the design of homes, roof design also plays a major role in the appearance of the facade.
It is essential to understand more about how the design of the roof affects the front of the house, and what effect it has on the property value and beauty of the house.

1. Identification of house
House Facade is the identity of the house. For people living in Brisbane, facade design along with roof design is a matter of personal preference. Modern houses use attractive and varied roof designs, which enhance the front of the house. Generally, people prefer single storey and modern storey roofs in cities like Brisbane.
2. Effect of roof design on the overall appearance of the house
The roof of the house plays an important part in the facade design. If your roof is smooth, flat or tiled it can make the facade look more modern and stylish. A high gabled or pitched roof gives the facade a more elegant and distinctive look. A solid roof design gives the facade a more natural look, which can inspire Brisbane homeowners to use facade design to show off the uniqueness of their home.
3. Roof selection for Brisbane climate
Most of the time in Brisbane is spent in heat and rain, which requires special attention to roof design. Brisbane people should always choose a roof that can protect from heat and rain as well as beautify the facade. Tiled roofs are good for preventing heat and also make the facade of the house look noble.
4. Compatibility with External Materials
It is very important to maintain a perfect balance between the house facade and roof design. In Brisbane, many homeowners mix roof designs with brick, concrete or timber exterior materials to create a more attractive and robust facade. The right combination of colors and materials in the facade and roof design creates a distinct identity for the house.
5. Increasing home value
The right roof design and use of facades can enhance not only the home but also the market value of your property. In Brisbane, houses with distinctive facades and roofs always sell for a higher price. Hence, it is essential to think well in the design of the roof of the house and harmonize it with the facade.
6. Formula for facade design
If you are looking for the right roof design for your shed in Brisbane, consider what type of roof will make your shed look more harmonious and attractive. For people in Brisbane, modern roof designs and facade designs with similar materials can enhance both the beauty and strength of a home.
Conclusion
The influence of the design of the facade and roof of the house is always significant. Maintaining variety and modernity in facade and roof design reinforces the identity of the home for people in Brisbane. Acclaimed Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas described it a masterpiece of experimental architecture. Singaporeans were drawn to it for its atmosphere and the abundance of cheap Thai food. For Thais living in Singapore, it was a home away from home.
Golden Mile Complex, also known as Little Thailand, was sold in 2021 to a consortium which will redevelop the building. As it has been gazetted as a conserved building by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, its physical structure is likely to be preserved. However, the same cannot be said for its unique character. Its tenants â a mix of inexpensive Thai eateries, seedy bars and tiny shops selling Thai perishables â were given until May 2023 to move out. Now that they have dispersed, they are unlikely to return.
As an era in the buildingâs history ends, it is timely to look back at its history, which goes back five decades.
Building Golden Mile Complex
Officially opened on 28 January 1972, Golden Mile Complex was an urban renewal project by the government to âredevelop and rejuvenate the slum-ridden areas in the Singapore city centreâ.1 In the 1960s, the site was home to squatter settlements, small-time furniture and rattan makers, and the Kampong Glam Community Centre.2
In June 1967, then Minister for Law and National Development E.W. Barker announced that the area would be one of 14 urban redevelopment projects which would be transformed â resulting in modern skyscrapers, luxury apartments, hotels and shops â to give rise to a ânew look Singaporeâ. These projects would involve the participation of private enterprises.3
Singapura Developments won the tender for the three-acre site that would eventually host Golden Mile Complex with a proposal for a building by the architecture firm Design Partnership (now known as DP Architects), which was then helmed by William S.W. Lim, Tay Kheng Soon and Koh Seow Chuan. The three men had convinced Singapura Developments to bid for the site in May 1969, offering the unusual proposition for a single building that would integrate shops, offices and apartments. Although the concept differed sharply from the governmentâs original proposal for luxury apartments on the plot, Lim, Tay and another architect, Gan Eng Oon, proved their design could work with an economic feasibility study that included precisely calculated land and sale prices.4
The all-in-one design of Golden Mile Complex marked a significant shift from how city planners in Singapore then traditionally segregated areas into different zones for âlive, work, playâ. In fact, it embodied Limâs vision for âmegastructuresâ that would contain all the functions of a city within a building, which he believed to be the future of Asian cities.
âWe must reject outdated planning principles that seek to segregate manâs activities into arbitrary zones, no matter how attractive it may look in ordered squares on a land use map. We must reject arbitrary standards laid down that limit the intensive use of land,â said Lim and Tay as part of an essay for the Singapore Planning and Urban Research Group that was published in Asia Magazine in 1966.5 This vision was realised in Golden Mile Complex: a concrete megastructure that became one of the earliest mixed-use developments in Singapore and Asia.6
In January 1970, Singapura Developments began marketing the property and declared that âThe Golden Mile Race Is Onâ. All 64 apartments were snapped up within a month, and most of the offices and shops were sold by the time building works commenced in May 1970.7
The building was originally named Woh Hup Complex, after the parent company of Singapura Developments. Rising 16 storeys, the edifice was designed in the Brutalist style popular in Europe and North America from the 1950s to the 1970s.8 It was constructed in a stepped terraced design held up by two end pillars that each adorned a star logo by Singaporeâs leading graphic designer William Lee.9 Such a facade maximised waterfront views for the 64 apartments and maisonette penthouses spread across the topmost seven floors.
The next six floors housed 210 offices and studios to complete the tower that was seemingly pried apart in the middle. This sheltered a residential play deck facing Beach Road on the 10th storey while letting in natural light and ventilation into the office corridors and a three-storey podium. The latter comprised 360 shops that sat atop a basement carpark for 550 vehicles.
Completing the facilities was a four-storey residential car park at one end of the building that was topped with an open-air swimming pool overlooking the former Crawford Park. All these different functions were connected by corridors, including a âstreetâ that ran through the podium of shops. The result was an interiorised environment designed to âencourage human interaction and intensify public lifeâ.10
A Hub of Modernity
Woh Hup Complex was part of a pioneering wave of shopping centres to open in Singapore in the early 1970s, along with Peopleâs Park Complex in Chinatown and Tanglin Shopping Centre and Specialistsâ Centre in the Orchard Road area.
Like many of the complexes built then, Woh Hup Complex was also a strata-titled development. This form of property ownership was introduced by the government in 1968 to allow individual owners to have a share of a land. It allowed property developers to quickly recoup their investment by tapping on a pool of buyers, and also enabled individuals to participate in the on-going modernisation of Singapore.11
Woh Hup Complex offered shop lots in various sizes, starting from a 144-square-foot lot for just $16,500.12 The prices were lower compared to other shopping centres because the complex was at the city centre fringe. But its developer remained bullish about its prospects. âWe offer easy parking, no frayed nerves while coming up here,â said T.M. Yong, a director at Singapura Developments. âOur shop owners will most probably be able to offer goods at lower prices.â13 The earliest tenants in the complex were an eclectic mix of shoe retailers, beauty salons, photo studios, furniture suppliers, travel agents, eateries, restaurants and nightclubs.14
As one of the first buildings to offer modern office spaces in Singapore, Woh Hup Complex attracted many businesses too. Singapura Developments and its parent company Woh Hup as well as Design Partnership set up offices in the building.15 The complex also became known for its many architecture and engineering firms, including OD Architects who were conceiving the masterplan for the National University of Singaporeâs Kent Ridge campus, Cardew and Rider Engineers who were working with Design Partnership on Marina Square, and several engineering firms involved in the construction of Singaporeâs up-and-coming Mass Rapid Transit network.16
But a decade after the complex opened, there were complaints of interrupted water supply, faulty air-conditioning and lifts, leaking roofs, rotting ceiling boards, rubbish piling up along the corridors, and broken or missing lights.17 These were reported after Woh Hup exited the property market and sold Singapura Developments along with its properties to City Developments in 1981.18 Woh Hup Complex was then renamed Golden Mile Complex.
The Rise of âLittle Thailandâ
By the mid-1980s, many of the building professionals had moved their offices elsewhere and Golden Mile Complex became better known as the haunt of foreign construction workers, specifically those from Thailand.
After work, particularly on Sundays and public holidays, homesick Thai workers thronged Golden Mile Complex to drink Singha beer, catch up on news back home by reading Thai newspapers, and listen to Thai music on cassette tapes. The draw for most was the various eateries selling Thai food at reasonable prices on the ground floor. Not only did these establishments serve food just like home, they served them on tables and chairs âscattered in front of food shopsâ or along the corridors and the concourse â just â[like] a street corner in Haadyai or Bangkokâ.19
Golden Mile Complex was also the terminal for tour buses plying the Singapore-Haadyai route operated by travel agencies located in the complex and the neighbouring Golden Mile Tower. As the Thai clientele in the complex grew, it became referred to as âLittle Bangkokâ and âLittle Thailandâ.20 The Thai community injected new life into what was then a rapidly ageing Golden Mile Complex, and attracted even more shops to serve the community. A tailor in the complex reportedly expanded from one shop to seven to sell all things Thai, while a â100% genuine Thai styleâ disco named Pattaya opened in 1988 on the second floor.21 There was even a 50-seat âcinemaâ that screened kick-boxing specials and Thai features at $3 a ticket.22
In 1986, the Straits Times reported that Golden Mile Complex âwould be a ghost town but for the office workers, who appear at lunch time, and the Thais, who have made it their hauntâ. Dorothy, a secretary working in an architecture firm in the complex, told the Straits Times: âBefore the Thais started coming here about four years ago, the place was very dead. Now, itâs sometimes so noisy that you get a headache.â Because fights would occasionally break out, she was not a fan of the place. âFor Thai food, Iâd rather go to Joo Chiat,â she added.23 Her sentiments were shared by many other Singaporeans who avoided Golden Mile Complex on Sundays.
As one shopowner explained: âOur Sunday business has been hit. Some customers stay away because of the Thai character of the place.â A food stall operator added: âThe Thais linger for hours, drinking beer and eating their favourite beef noodles. Sometimes, they fight among themselves over a few drinks.â24
It did not help that migrant workers and the complex were often in the news for the wrong reasons. As part of the governmentâs massive crackdown on illegal migrants in March 1989, 370 suspected Thai undocumented workers at Golden Mile Complex were nabbed in a single operation.25
National Icon or National Disgrace?
In 1994, Rem Koolhaas visited Singapore and marvelled at its development in his seminal essay âSingapore Songlinesâ. He was particularly captivated by Golden Mile Complex and Peopleâs Park Complex, which he praised as ââmasterpiecesâ of experimental architecture/urbanismâ.26 On his next visit to Singapore in 2005, Koolhaas said: âThese buildings were not intended to be landmarks but became landmarks. Yesterday, I went to see all the buildings again, and they are absolutely stunning, radical and amazing.â27
While Koolhaas and many in the architecture fraternity saw Golden Mile Complex as the future, most Singaporeans regarded it as a relic of the past. By the 1990s, a slew of new shopping centres had sprung up near the complex, including Raffles City, Bugis Junction, Suntec City, Millenia Walk and Marina Square. Many felt Golden Mile Complex and other strata-title malls were simply no match for these single-owner developments that could plan a more attractive retail mix to woo shoppers.28 A 1996 article in the Straits Times assessed that Golden Mile Complex was unlikely to change because of its ownership structure and should simply âfill [the] low-end gapâ.29
The disconnect between Golden Mile Complexâs celebrated architecture and its decline came to a head in 2006. During a parliamentary session on 6 March, then Nominated Member of Parliament Ivan Png called it a âvertical slumâ. He was particularly irked by how each individual owner had added âextensions, zinc sheets, patched floors, glass, all without any regard for other owners and without any regard for national welfareâ, resulting in âa terrible eyesore and a national disgraceâ.
âThe appearance of Golden Mile Complex appals me whenever I drive along Nicoll Highway. It must create a terrible impression on foreign visitors arriving from the airport. How can we be a world-class city in a garden? The Golden Mile Complex is just the most extreme of how a strata-title property can deteriorate,â he said.30
This came just after Golden Mile Complex was featured in Singapore 1:1 â City, a publication showcasing significant architecture and urban design in the city-state.31 âThatâs a real joke!â said Png. âCan you imagine if that thing was standing on the Singapore River between OCBC Building and UOB Centre?â He added: âIt just gives me goosebumps. Itâs so close to the city, yet itâs so unlike Singapore â orderly, tidy, everything neat. Itâll drag us down.â32
Not everyone agreed with his criticism. Retiree Evelyn Ong, who moved into the complex in 2005, immediately booked her 11-storey apartment after seeing the breathtaking views. She said: âOnce I stepped in and saw the view, I said book, book, must book.â She bought her 1,000-square-foot apartment for about $310,000, and spent about $70,000 on renovations to make it look like a holiday resort. âI think Iâm very lucky. Itâs so difficult to find such a nice view. Every day, I sit here (at my balcony) and I can see the beautiful lights at night.â She agreed that more could be done to spruce up the building though.33
The local architecture fraternity pushed back against Pngâs comments. In August 2006, Calvin Low, a trained architect and journalist, kickstarted a monthly series on local architecture in the Straits Times and titled his first article âGolden Mile Still Shinesâ.
âThe architectural thesis that GMC [Golden Mile Complex] represented was revolutionary â not just for Singapore but globally, too. It stood as a concrete realisation of the architectsâ vision of a futuristic city-within-a-building that offered a whole, new integrated way of living in a modern, tropical, urban Asian context,â he wrote.34
In November the same year, a collective of architects, designers and artists known as FARM launched âSave the Modern Building Seriesâ, a lineup of talks to raise awareness of the complex and other pioneering modern buildings such as Pearl Bank Apartments.35 In November 2007, the inaugural architecture festival, Singapore ArchiFest 07 â organised by the Singapore Institute of Architects to celebrate Singaporeâs built environment â featured tours of the complex conducted by architecture students from the National University of Singapore.36
A Landmark Saved, a Community Lost
In August 2018, news broke that more than 80 percent of the owners of units in the complex had agreed to put the building up for an en bloc sale at $800 million. This came hot on the heels of the sale of another modernist icon, Pearl Bank Apartments,37 just six months earlier. Heritage and architectural experts were dismayed at the news. âIt will be a tragedy and a great loss to Singapore if the en-bloc sale results in the demolition and redevelopment of such an important urban landmark with such high architectural and social significance,â said heritage conservation expert Ho Weng Hin.38
Although architects and academics petitioned for Golden Mile Complex to be conserved, residents were in two minds about it. The complexâs long-time residents confessed they could no longer keep up with the buildingâs maintenance needs. âThe problem is that itâs an old building, and when it rains, the water seeps through some of the walls. The building has water-proofing issues,â said Ponno Kalastree, who had lived and worked there since 1989. He was among those who had voted for the sale and was planning to downgrade to a Housing and Development Board flat, but admitted that he would miss the place.39
To the surprise of many, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) told the Business Times in October 2018 that they have âassessed the building to have heritage value, and is in the process of engaging the stakeholders to explore options to facilitate conservationâ. âModern architecture, dating from our recent past, is a significant aspect of our built heritage, and we have selectively conserved a number of such buildings. Where there is strong support and merits for conservation, we will work with the relevant stakeholders to facilitate the process,â said the URA. This meant that the existing building could be retained while a new block would be added next to it.40
The tender closed in January the following year without any offer, and a second tender launched just two months later with the same terms and price tag of $800 million suffered the same fate.41
Almost one year after the two failed collective sales, the URA announced in October 2020 that it was officially proposing Golden Mile Complex to be conserved in light of its historical and architectural significance.42 When it was gazetted a year later in October 2021, Golden Mile Complex became the âfirst modern, large-scale strata-titled development to be conserved in Singaporeâ.43
The owners relaunched an en bloc sale in December that year at the same price of $800 million.44 This time, the sale was successful and the complex was sold in May 2022 to a consortium comprising Far East Organization, Sino Land and Perennial Holdings. Although their bid was $100 million lower than the reserve price, the owners agreed to the sale within âa record time of 15 daysâ.45
At the point of publishing this essay, the new owners have yet to reveal how they plan to redevelop Golden Mile Complex, though it is unlikely that any of the former tenants will return. The battle to conserve Golden Mile Complex has, ironically, cost the community who kept it alive when others moved on to swankier new buildings. But all, however, is not lost. The redevelopment of Golden Mile Complex could serve as a model for how other similar buildings in Singapore can be conserved and enjoy a new lease of life for the future.

sleepover ask game!! tell me abt ur day and an unpopular opinion <3
hi dominic!!!
my day was really fun actually :D it was my little brother's birthday so he, my dad, and i were out almost the whole day. we went to build-a-bear and my brother & i got matching frog plushies and then we went to this mall i i haven't been to in the loooooongest time which was so fun. it has this 2-storey carousel on the second floor that was my favorite thing in the whole world as a kid, and i rode on it again today for the first time in. god maaybe 5 or 6 years? it was sooo much fun for me but it was also really cool to see my little brother enjoy it too :] and then we got dinner and i ate eggs benedict for the first time ever and then had ice cream cake at home <3 and my brother loved the gift i gave him (my old mp3 player with a shit ton of songs on it) and so i sort felt like the best sibling in the world. so yeah really good day :)
an unpopular opinion! i don't think this is considered an unpopular opinion on tumblr/the internet tbh but in real life i've met next to no one who agrees with me so. ummmmmmmm i fucking detest the "boyfriend fit" style of clothing that's become popular these days esPECIALLY in plus-size clothing companies. i think it's really fucking stupid & boring & lame & most of all cuntless that we've created a style of clothing that mimic this phenomenon of girls wearing their boyfriend's clothes that are supposedly "oversized" and make her looked smaller and all cute. aside from the outright rage i feel toward this concept (the stereotypical girls are smaller so their boyfriend's clothes will look oversized and baggy and "masculine" (NOT AT ALL)) it just really pisses me off because clothing companies now are replacing perfectly good and fine styles (more specifically styles that i, as a fat person, enjoy!) to cater to people who want to look small and dainty and cute in their "boyfriend's" clothing. all the stores i frequent for clothing are replacing my favorite style of jeans with boyfriend fit and hot topic's new favorite thing is making t-shirts ONLY in the boyfriend fit and i bought a mcr one last year because the design was too cool to pass up and i fucking regret it every time i wear the shirt because the fit is cut slimmer than the usual tees but the arms fit fine, even when it's in my usual size, so i'm stuck with a really awkward looking shirt and incites dysphoria for me personally and it JUST LOOKS BAD IN MY OPINION??? and so yes. i have so much more to say on this topic but my unpopular opinion is that the boyfriend fit style should kill itself or at the very least companies should put BACK the regular styles i know and love because if it wasn't hard enough for me to find clothes in my size that don't exacerbate my dysphoria, now i gotta scour ebay for discontinued jeans styles because they've all been replaced by the boyfriends. I HOPE JAKEY FUCKING DIES !!!!!!

Chapter 4: White Roses

Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3
Wordcount: 945

Four days in Paris came by fast. Erwin and (Y/N) took their time knowing each other more and exploring the place together. It was nice and refreshing, having to wander through a new place and knowing that Erwin, her arranged partner, isnât really bad. He has been a gentleman throughout their stay there.
In current time, (Y/N) is resting on hers and Erwinâs shared bed in Erwinâs private estate. She has just put all her stuff in their designated places. The room was nice and so is the whole house. Their room has a king-sized bed, a bathroom, a television, a couch and walk-in closets for both her and Erwin.
Erwin has already given her a tour of the place. All its ins and outs and everything. Heâs currently downstairs, cooking dinner. He told (Y/N) to take a rest for now since sheâll be doing most of the housework since heâll be back to his office on Monday.

(Y/N) is walking downstairs to the kitchen. Erwin has called her earlier saying that dinner is ready. (Y/N) thought it was very nice of Erwin to cook for her but then again, he is a gentleman.
She arrived at the kitchen and took a seat next to Erwin. They had small talk in between bites and everything seems peaceful. It was very refreshing for (Y/N), to finally live without the fear of doing anything wrong around the person that she lives with. For the first time in her life, (Y/N) felt light. The heavy pressure that her father has brought upon her was finally lifted up.
After dinner, (Y/N) and Erwin did their own nightly routines respectively before hopping onto the bed. (Y/N) felt very comfortable, everything about Erwin now makes her feel safe and comfy, oh how she wishes this would last. One might say that she fell in love so easily but none could ever take away that feeling of freedom and lightness that (Y/N) felt for the very first time. That feeling that so far, only Erwin has ever made her feel.

The following morning, (Y/N) woke up with a soundly sleeping Erwin next to her. He looks so peaceful just like this. She admired the way Erwin looked for a good five minutes before she decided to get up. It was 7 in the morning and the sun is already high up. She carefully got out of the bed and watched as Erwin didnât even flinched. Heâs a deep sleeper, (Y/N) thought.
She headed down to the kitchen to make breakfast. Bacons, eggs and toasts, yep. It wasnât long after she started cooking that Erwin entered the kitchen.
âGood morning,â (Y/N) greeted.
âGood morningâ Erwin replied.
âI just started cooking so it might take a little while.â
âMm, itâs alright, Iâll wait. Thanks for your courtesy of cooking todayâs breakfast.â
âItâs nothing. Would you like something to drink?â
âTea would be nice.â
âAlright.â
The breakfast was nice and delicious. (Y/N) and Erwin ate them together on the dining table. After eating, Erwin took her on a walk around the subdivision. It was a quiet and peaceful place. (Y/N) noticed how most of the houses on their neighborhood are high, rarely a one-storey building. Erwin brought her to the park. There were cafĂŠs and a playground. Lots of children are playing and screaming but the sound wasnât obnoxious in any way, if anything, it sounds peaceful.
The change of environment really had a positive impact on (Y/N), everything she sees are new and everything new here seems peaceful. She and Erwin took a seat on a nearby bench. (Y/N) took a deep breath, this place is wonderful.
They watched as the children played on the playground. They all looked so happy. (Y/N) thought about how nice it must be to be innocent and carefree just like those children.
After a while, Erwin and (Y/N) decided to go home. On their way, (Y/N) noticed a bush of white roses. They were beautiful. She touched its top and felt as its soft petals made contact with her fingers. White roses, a symbolism of purity, innocence, fresh starts and new beginnings. It reminded her of those children in the park and their young, innocent minds. It also reminded her of somethingâ No. Perhaps someone she know, all too well. Herself.

Erwinâs office leave is ending and he needs to go back to the office tomorrow. (Y/N) felt a bit sad upon knowing that sheâll be left here alone but she tried not to think much of it, Erwinâs just going to work. That day, they both watched a movie and took a walk in the park.
Monday arrived, Erwin got up early to get himself ready for work. When (Y/N) woke up, she was alone on the bed. She quickly got up and tried to look for Erwin but he was nowhere to be found. She thought Erwin mustâve left early without waking her up .
âGood morningâ a deep voice suddenly spoke which made (Y/N) yelp. She looked back to see Erwin in a blue suit. He looks so formal, smart and stunning.
âSorry, I didnât mean to startle you,â Erwin spoke again.
âOh, itâs alright. I thought youâve already left for workâ
âI was just about to, I just forgot this,â he took an envelope from his nightstand and showed it to (Y/N).
âOh, I see. Goodbye then, I donât want to hold you for longâ
âThank you.â
(Y/N) walked Erwin out and they said goodbye to each other.
âTake care!â (Y/N) cheerfully said to Erwin while waving a little. Erwin gave her a nod before entering his car and driving away.

ââââ welcome to ... the HOUSE OF DE VIL (description & roles)
Itâs taken over three months, but the House of de Vilâs new headquarters is ready. Standing on the corner within the central business district of Elias, it acts as both office and boutique for the renowned fashion company. A four-storey building, its wide windows showcase mannequins wearing a mix of de Vilâs classic designs, and new pieces.
The building itself is L-shaped, and was an old commercial building with an attached courtyard behind wrought-iron gates. In its renovation and reconstruction, Cruella had the builders rip off those gates, though the surrounding fence still remains, and opened the courtyard for use by the employees of the House and for the public to use as a sort of sitting garden. There is an art installation and a water fountain in the courtyard. The building has an inspired Haussmann style facade.
( below are a list of jobs available ! )
ââ Employment opportunities.
There are lots of openings for employment at the House, including within the boutique, the atelier (workshop), the administration, publishing (a branch of admin), and the operations team of the building. Everyone is paid very well (hon hon hon).
If you work for the House of de Vil, it is expected that it is the only place you work at, in the position you're in (eg. if you are a seamstress here, you cannot be anywhere else, but you could be a waitress).
Above all, the House is your priority.

Administration Officers (0/??) - A more general admin position. Their duties can range from organising events, to filtering through job applications, to sorting mail, contracts for various sources, etc.
Interns (0/4) - Involves a less rigorous interview process, but discretion is key. Their focus will be on assisting and shadowing the Administrative side of the House (more office-focused).

( OOC NOTES )
If you would like your character to have any of these roles, please let me know! Any questions as well, please donât hesitate to ask. These were the roles I could come up with, and I kept some of them vague on purpose in case your character would like to do something more specific or if you come up with another role that could exist in the fashion house!
And depending on the character, some of these roles may merge into jobs for Cruella's more ... illegal operations ... more on that soon đ
Msg me for anything lovelies !! đ

After you come a few time to London (itâs my third time this year -visit 1 & visit 2) and youâve seen the major tourist spots you start to just walk around. Since I love wandering around Paris and finding fun facts about the city I started to look for some interesting pieces about London
So this time I planned my walks to go check out
*The tallest door in London - Opened in 1904, it was once home to the Elms Lesters Painting Rooms, used to store and produce theatre scenery and backdrops. The tall door allowed the huge scenery to be maneuvered.

*The fence made of stretchers from WWII - During the war, many of Londonâs housing estates lost their original metal railings when they were manufactured into weaponry to serve the war effort. With a large stockpile of stretchers following the war, the London City Council decided to have the stretchers welded vertically together, fixed onto poles, sunken into concrete, and used to replace this missing fencing. The two kinks in the poles, designed so that they could be rested on the ground then picked up easily, can still be seen on the railings today.

*The House of St Barnabas / Charity House with the Victorian Penny chute for donation.

*St Bartholomew's Gatehouse - The earliest surviving timber framed facade in the City . It comprises a two-storey 16th century Tudor building with parts of the stonework and archway from the 13th century. It was the gatehouse to the Norman Priory church of St Bartholomew- the Great , founded in 1123.

The first photo is the oldest churches in the city: St Bartholomew-the-Great (protect by the gate above) founded in 1123 as a Augustinian priory. It was fully restored in 1932 and it retains some of the 13th century stonework from the original nave. Fun facts: The church is featured in several films: Four wedding and a funeral; Shakespeare in Love, Avenger: Age of Ultron; Sherlock Holmes; Transformer: the last Knight; the Other Boleyn Girl.
