I mean, don't feel obligated to read the manga/watch the show(s)(either of them! still so happy we got a reboot 20 years after the original…) its just. would fill on context for Some Things (also is a gateway into magical girls if ur not already into them) and I always take a chance to rec it. but..I do try to make things understandable w/out it? I hope?

Cara…im trying to think of what I can say publicly abt her without spoiling her whole story. (I plan to probably make it a novel-sized fanfic and...with 2-3 illus per chapter…it works better as a comic, but the energy to do it + how little reception I got when I tried it…TwT </3) this got. erm. long. so under the cut? I dont THINK anything is TOO spoilery, but if anyone wants to wait until the story is actually being written, maybe skip this one :3c

ok so. my sweet caroline (ba ba ba) 'cara' testout-seebauer, (god what a good name)...… she's like. my wildcard character. full of surprises. full of anxiety. as someone who is also full of anxiety I can say sometimes getting too anxious makes people lash out, seem irritable. get this girl some noise-cancelling headphones tbh. she's also quiet, which, people around her misinterpret as 'oh shes brooding and mysterious' but she's 15. she's the Most 15 Year Old, and all that entails.

She, uh…let me just say she is about as aware as magical girl tropes as Mira is. she makes a point to declare herself as the 'dark magical girl rival' to Mira's heroine persona. which is totally a Normal Thing for anyone with Normal Motivations to say, obviously. (mira aggressively turns a blind eye to how absolutely weird that is because it fits with what she also wants, but other characters are even like, hey thats..questionable? why is a human working with the Aliens Who Want All Humans Dead?? you might ASSUME tragic backstory, but I Love Subverting Expectations. she has a pretty good family life!) she's not as much as an edgelord as this type of character should be in theory, but she IS dramatic 🤔

she's actually somewhat naive and makes the worlds most questionable judgement calls and has the worst sense of who to trust. she's a nerd. she speaks like 4 languages because she was moved around a lot up until she was about 13 and has lived in a handful of countries (if you ask her, she'd say shes american bc thats where shes lived the longest, but her dad is half british half japanese raised in japan and left when he was 18 for america, and her mother is afro-latina american. she strongly takes after her mom in looks but got her dads hair texture :> )

it's a running gag that she knows how to do an improbable amount of things and she always brushes this off her parents were very indulgent and she had a hard time sticking to anything. why does she know origami and karate and how to make balloon animals and ballet and sword fighting and art?? oh but she can only do the very basics of any of the various things, she's not like, outstanding at very many things admittedly and cannot commit to anything. she has...approximate knowledge of many things...It must be said, for the majority of the alien ocs I have...shes the first human theyve met. so u can imagine this gives them very skewed idea of how many things humans can do...

a lot of the characters n plots in tm2 are things I think were tragically underused and under-explored in tmm. in particular the things about her that I draw from are largely things from tokyo mew mew a la mode. (which as of now is free to read on archive.org and is only two volumes!! its the sequel to tmm ^_^...) anyway regarding that...there's a hint in her full name no one as picked up on yet and I shant say more on that. (...do people not pick up on certain naming schemes in tmm aside from the girls having food names? I dont know. this is one of those 'would only pick up on it if ur familiar w tmm things but! I dont even think ppl who HAVE read it have noticed yet.. tbf I only revealed her full name last year I think!)

all of the girls have symbolism with the animal dna they're infused with. cara's a snake. which is such a double sided thing. a lot of people are scared of snakes, lots of imagery of being two-faced or deceitful BUT also, like, 'transformations/rebirth' (shedding of the snake skin) and the caduceus!!! (hermes association, loosely :)) fun. her weapon being a shield + gramophone combo thing now reflects a lot about her too :)

shes SHORT. shes freckled. she cuts her own hair. shes objectively just really funny in a messed up way because everything is extreme when ur 15, its seriously so. just. shes so so so dramatic and gay, my god. its painful to watch. its painful to WRITE. rancid at just COMMUNICATING. she doesnt necessarily even want to be a magical girl its rotten work but my god she'll do it she DOES like the genre but she is so so scared and would probably rather NOT be doing more than like, cosplay. fighting things or people = scary. anxiety is real. but here she is! for some ungodly reason! eeey exposure therapy amiright fellow anxiety sufferers. queen put her and sapote together because sapote was the only alien whod volunteer to get infused and become a mew mew lol sapote is outgoing and queen figured this would offset cara's...*vaguely gestures* everything pretty well. and that sapote would be able to sus out anything cara might be hiding. queen knows sapote's smarter than expected and trusts her a lot cara and sapote are SUCH a funny duo 😭

cara is like. she has problems. and instead of solving them in any rational way she ends up creating 15 more severe problems about it. pitiful little meow meow mew mew

also I'm glad u enjoyed the lil doodle of them, had to toss them in after ur nice message :) (+I will take any excuse to draw or talk abt my ocs r u kidding. i love them)

replying to the very last bit of ur message abt our friend saguaro: WAAAA THAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY THAT THEY MAKE U WANNA DRAW SWORDS!! since u arent a tmm watcher/reader. I have to tell you. deep blue, their god? is the main final bad guy in tmm. we have SO SO SO little info about him. I had to make up so many stupid little headcanons surrounding him + the religion and what would possibly happen post-canon. which is only vaguely tangentially related but I have Many Thoughts. he uses a sword, so of course saguaro would Want To as well! and as far as 'gods' go, deep blue is. hm. a violent one. saguaro is incredibly nice! but is still a devout cult member follower of a violent god who they WILL spill blood in the name of. they WILL tell queen to her face that no, she should NOT be the leader, that should be someone who follows deep blue-sama! and they are only following her for a good view from the top to spot carry out his will, because surely deep blue guided them to be so skillful for a REASON, they MUST be useful to him when he finally reappears! and there is NO room for doubt in their mind he WILL. (jaws theme ominously plays in the distance)

queen and saguaro are both ppl who pride themselves on being civil and well-mannered, so you can imagine the sheer passive-aggressiveness in their convos. they're useful, they're probably the BEST swordsmaster, and they've proven to be very diplomatic and can bridge the gap queen sorely needs to with the other straggling deep blue followers, and queen isn't one to throw away a pawn, so she ultimately sees it as putting up with an annoyance for the greater good. (its not like deep blue could possibly return or anything! jaws theme sounds louder and closer)

everyone else in queens little upper posse thinks theyre super weird. …except cara! (we've come full circle!) because shes human! and! has no frame of reference! for deep blue related things! (well…at least, not in the way everyone else would've) shes dealt with like, mormons or thse door to door religious ppl, to her its like. whatever. same difference. saguaro isnt mean to her solely because shes a human like SOME people in queen's upper circle are. in fact, they're really actually very nice to her! and hey, she likes swords! and they have a calming presence, which is GREAT when u are a little shaky chihuahua abt everything.

I have this scene planned out where cara wakes up from a nightmare SCREAMING, sapote's room is right beside her and hey thats her little buddy so ofc she runs in. but cara wont talk to her, and sapote is like. kid I Am Not Leaving You Alone rn I Am Vaguely Worried and you need someone Adult Shaped to talk to. so caras like. whatever get saguaro then. and sapote is BAFFLED, but it makes perfect sense. because unlike sapote, they won't badger her or try and get her to spill anything, they won't try forcing her into a hug, if she asks them to just talk and distract, they're happy to. they aren't going to go spill her secrets and they CERTAINLY wont rat her out for saying anything untowardly about queen.

sapote accuses them of trying to yank cara into their little cult over this of course. kadskj

oops. thats a very long ramble about nothing very clear. I'm trying to be GOOD about not spoiling my own darn story, but the temptation to talk about it is so strong. I'm always super happy to share stuff on it and when ppl show interest it makes my heart explode. thank uuuu so much again TwT

I wanna talk about the new star wars clips but without spoiling stuff for people

So I put it behind the cut...

Ok, now that you’re still with me, a lot of people are talking about the clips (shown at D23 on the weekend to attendees of a specific panel and then some of them this morning on GMA) and trying to analyze (as you do) what’s going on.

Based on these clips and the teaser from back... whenever we saw it (June?), I’m focusing mainly on what’s going on with Rey, which I think is what most people are doing.

I don’t think showing a dark Rey (darth rey?) is the big reveal so much as they want us to wonder how the hell she gets that way. People appear to be in two camps: it’s actually Rey having fallen to the dark side, or it’s from a vision. I’m in the former camp and I’ll tell ya why. But first, why I don’t think it’s a vision:

I mean, not to knock people who do think it’s a vision. Perfectly cromulent explanation, really. It’s just that people think Rey can’t fall and come back in one movie and I’m kinda like eh about that since we’ve only really seen one person fall in a movie series and that was Anakin and he’s... special. I mean, so is Rey, but Anakin had a very specific path. It’s sorta like Rey’s but not the same. That and in Knights of the Old Republic it doesn’t take Bastila years to fall. Her fall is like, what, days? But the puzzle pieces were there for Bastila, just like they are for Rey. Anyway, I don’t want to trash on why I DON’T think it’s a vision. I’d rather discuss why I think it’s gonna happen in real time:

1.) Rey is a fucking ball of anger. I don’t like having to use the novelizations for support but I will - In the Last Jedi novelization, we get opinions of Rey from a few sources: Snoke, Luke, and the fish nuns. The fish nuns mostly think Rey is rude and destructive, Luke can’t believe how quickly she goes to the dark side, and Snoke recognizes that not only is she insanely powerful and possess a “towering will”, but that she’s filled with hatred (for him, to be fair, but still).

2.) Rey is actually impatient. I know Rey likes to play up how patient she is, having waited for her family all that time, but there are other cases where she’s quite impatient. She gives up on Luke fairly quickly, rushes to see Kylo after one vision she misinterprets, bosses Finn around when he can’t correctly identify what are really specialty pieces of equipment. In the book Before the Awakening, Rey gets quickly irritated by the mere presence of other people helping her to repair her ship (to be fair they did later take it, but only because they wanted to leave Jakku sooooo...) The only people Rey seems to have infinite time for are her parents, and that’s because it’s her desperate need to have them with her and give her what she craves: love and affection. And the dark side is a quicker way to gain what we want, as yoda warns.

3.) Rey’s looking for parents/father figures. We know this because Kylo tells us so (and Rey). She doesn’t like to be told this, but it’s true. She imprinted on Han right away, and tried to with Luke. And before you go “why would she imprint on Palpatine???”, and I’ll say that Palpatine would probably appear to her in a way that she’d not immediately find threatening, perhaps. I mean, if he shows up looking like good ol’ Sheev Palpatine, senator from Naboo, that guy was the epitome of try-hard father figure. He’s also got a lot of experience on his resume for it thanks to his time with Maul and Anakin. He loves finding orphans and offering them all kinds of good shit.

4.) Rey’s been hearing voices telling her to burn things. I mean, not really, but she has heard voices in her head telling her shit, like to kill Kylo, etc. And this is usually when she’s tapping into her angry Rey dark side shit and going all Darth Maul on someone. She also seemed really concerned when she was trying to explain this to Luke. That “something’s inside me and now it’s awake” shit is coming to full fruition.

5.) Rey has been trying to compartmentalizing her dark side shit for years. She tries to keep her emotions in check and that’s... not good. Like instead of just telling people “yeah I’m an orphan” she’s like “Oh no its cool my family loves me and just sold me to a guy in a junkyard who would sell me on again to skin traders if he got the right price”. It’s pretty fucked up. This sort of actually reminds me of loved ones who do this sometimes and it never ends well. All that stuff has to come out some time, and with Rey it’s probably going to come out all at once. Big badda boom.

So here’s what I think will happen:

1.) Rey will be in some darker place (mentally) due to her interactions with both Kylo and her Resistance family. Perhaps it will be them discovering her bond with Kylo and Kylo’s continued First Order shit that will simultaneously alienate her from both. It might happen quickly but still make sense in the movie, with time for her to fall and come back.

2.) Her fall will be accelerated by the influence of Palpatine. You better believe Rey is like catnip to a dude like that: angry orphan looking for love and acceptance? Palpatine is going to be all over that. Palpatine will probably offer to resurrect her parents or something.

3.) Rey’s two outfits we’ve seen are white and black to contrast her false “purity” to her later fall. And when I say “purity” I mean “as a hero”, not sexually. I know when her white outfit came out, people were like “why?” and some people were pointing out it’s her visually trying to turn away from her past looks, where she was more grey than anything, and presenting this purer form to the outside world. And I gotta say those interpretations were probably spot-on. Her trying TOO hard to be pure and good will probably just push her further to fall, and fall hard under the expectations. And so what’s the opposite of white? Black!

4.) Rey’s fall will be quick, but also super temporary. You don’t really need to draw this out. You just need the scenes to get to the damn point. It also helps when you frame scenes from her perspective, as we’ve seen before. There’s no set length requirement to show such things happening, only that they are coded in a way that the audience understands what happened.

5.) Rey will be OK in the end. Rey’s not going to fall and then THE END. Come on. It’s Star Wars. She’ll be fine... mostly. But yeah, she won’t STAY dark, is what I’m saying. Luke had his moments where he could have gone dark forever, but didn’t. He never fell totally, but then again his childhood wasn’t as shitty as Rey’s. Anakin’s fall took years but he was also surrounded by like, what, 10000 jedi? It wasn’t until they were distracted by the Clone Wars and the Separatists and all the other shit Palpatine was throwing at them that Anakin fell. And then it took another three movies to get him back but again that’s Anakin’s story.

6.) What about Kylo? Kylo/Ben will be the one to bring her back, but I’m not taking credit for any of that because it’s what smarter people than me have already observed. Kylo/Ben loves her a whole lot, he’s just a dipshit who doesn’t know how to express it properly. But when he does it will be at just the right time to bring her back. This is basically the plot to Knights of the Old Republic anyway, but I’ve seen it play out similarly with heroes who fall/die etc and their anti-hero/villain counterparts finally get the courage to express their love.

ACTUALLY that’s what happens in the Care Bears II movie from the 80s. Not saying you should go watch it (it’s largely kinda boring but has some nice songs and moments) but if you do you’ll see a lot of similar themes. And what does this random animated movie from the 80s have to do with Star Wars? It was animated by Nelvana, who actually worked on Star Wars cartoons around the same time because George Lucas admired the studio and their stories. So, there ya go: Six degrees of Care Bears.

Anyway, the movie looks great. Can’t wait to see what actually happens!

13x04 watching notes

TBH that is my exact strategy when I am tired and want to go home.

it's 2am and I just woke up after a lengthy power nap/full REM cycle because going to bed at 9 is for cool kids so uh I'm watching the episode but also it's 2am. I didn't do it deliberately but here I aaaam.

Getting right in there with Dean telling the the truth in the recap - is he really gonna spill it all to a therapist? experts have been awaiting it ever since 1x10 so

Should I even write expectations for this episode? I'm a bit late since I already started watching :P Blah blah Glynn blah blah probably going to be fine, blah blah swear I saw someone say she's "never written Cas before" but uh we just had recaps from 12x19 so I mean who wrote that?

elizabethrobertajones yeah good choice, basically it's also brand new he found the non-dinosaur version of Star Wars of the previous generation :P and it's less political than the prequels I think The Clone Wars is generally well-liked whereas nerd rage dictates the Prequels are the Worst and I guess it's Too Soon to get into the newer Star Wars films since we don't know how the arcs of the new kids pay off

[side note: I haven't watched it per se because there's tons of it but I've been in the same room as my brother watching it, and seen a lot of pop culture general knowledge that I've sponged up so I could be wrong about some little details as I mostly know how it's been described to me]

Also Jack's identifying with the female character, because fuck off toxic masculinity, she seems awesome and he has no idea he isn't “”supposed”” to. She also is one of the aliens with the huge tentacle things on her head so idk if it's a good idea for him to get too into this without meeting more of the general population - Sam's probably right

Uhoh, Jack kinda does a snarky eyebrow about "you're the good guys" - Did Sam fail to sell it or is Jack really just starting to have trust issues now he's watching TV with black or white morality (literally a dark side and a light side - hrm.) and given his experience of the Winchesters yelling their very shades of grey takes on him at each other

Well he hasn't learned to be cagey about overhearing that

He also implicitly trusts Dean's judgement more than Sam's bonding, despite how Sam has made all the movements towards him. As people have been meta'ing, Dean's being extremely honest and Jack's setting his markers by that, even if it's horrific to the point of deciding he has to be evil because Dean thinks so.

Sam says he, Dean and CAS closed the rift - hey, Cas got knocked out by Lucifer in round 1 of that as a distraction and Crowley helped you close it.

They probably have not explained Crowley to him at all.

At least Sam is being honest now about what happened with the rift, and that it's their mom

and Jack speaks the language of lost moms. Now HE looks at SAM with sympathy.

Probably also explains Dean...

I think Jack is defaulting back to thinking about Dean way more than Sam's opinion of him, although perhaps he may like Sam more now he was upfront and some of why "so uh yeah I was KINDA using you" is on the table

Jack was wearing a darker henley, which tbh with Dean wearing them again all of a sudden makes it blurry to me if this is not about his Dean-alignment more than colour coding his feelings on being evil (like how Amara's nail polish started off black and got right down to light grey by the end of the season). Now he's swapped to being the Cas Intern.

Ow.

and aww all the fake IDs. There's a lot to take in about these guys :P

Oh no Dean said "loony toons" on the episode which may or may not be an exact use of 8x08 for Cas, for Jack. Jack's a bit more of a trial run about wanting to BE a hunter since he is mostly just curious. Also amused Dean has to rephrase for Jack because he actually knows he's a week old or so, and he's not going to enjoy repeating himself or explaining, while he always found it kind of funny to just say a whole string of incomprehensible pop culture at Cas without slowing for a breath.

Not funny now, is it Dean?

Wait have they never actually fought a revenant aka, idk, it sounds like a naturally occurring zombie? They mention it from time to time but as far as I remember they've never actually called zombies revenants because they're one of the shows where they just embrace the horror movie tradition about zombies completely, so it always seemed like revenants were something slightly different, at least, in the sense that they get named like a different category. And they just lumped them in with ghosts here, as restless spirits but i guess this time *with* the body?

Dean tells Jack to sit, like he was a dog being kept in the car.

Unlike dogs he knows how to work the door handle.

Pfft Dean's like immediately "it's a revenant" because they know what those are really well after a billion years hunting and we've never watched them ever name anything on screen a revenant before with that vocab, and they're really sticking with not crossing them over with zombies exactly...

I mean Dean said he wasn't a revenant after he got back from hell and I think they've chattered about them before

if I check this on superwiki it's way too early for there to be a spoilery "so it's not a revenant" line from later in this episode highlighted when I hit the search :P

Oh good, I'm glad I'm right.

A revenant is a visible ghost or animated corpse that returns to terrorize the living, usually people it knew in life. Unlike the zombie, a revenant is not under another person's control, and has returned from the grave on its own for a specific and often personal purpose. In 4.01 Lazarus Rising, Bobby accuses Dean of being a shapeshifter or a revenant. Dean proves he's neither by cutting himself with a silver knife. In 8.06 Southern Comfort Garth takes a call from a hunter asking how to deal with a revenant. Garth tells him to get a casket and some silver spikes, then nail it in and bury it. He also warns that getting bit will hurt like hell, but will not turn you into one.

I wonder if those were revenants in 4x07 and I only ask because it was like almost exactly an anniversary to it in OUR time :P It's still May or maybe June for them in-show

Okay Dean left Jack to dig but Sam chased after Dean rather than it being a synchronised Winchester ditching of Jack :P

UHoh Dean grabbed Jack's shoulder - he did it to Mick to be threatening last year in a Glynn episode, while Mick was wearing a long tan coat. And called Jack "Spock" which is not really accurate characterisation at all. Jack's pretty much nothing but a bundle of emotions, he's just not used to using them around other people. Now CAS on the other hand.....

I do like that Mia decided to see them because Jack is sweet and was upfront about losing his mother and he's just adorable.

They bluff their way in by losing a collective mother, Sam once again lining them up as family and siblings.

Was thinking about how last season was a "Dean is right about everything" season and this time is clearly a Sam is right about everything one... but of course both only to a certain degree, and in this case it's much blurrier about approach and how these fights are going because of course Sam's not being a perfect Saint Sammy that Dean is being unfairly awful to in the entirety of what's going on here. Sam IS struggling and resisting confronting things in his own way and adopting Jack as a pet project is definitely a form of avoidance or at least wanting to get concrete closure on Mary's death before he will fully mourn. Which makes Sam and Dean existing in the same place terrible because they're only in the same physical location

anyway Dean's about to yell about how hard this all is for him too so I better unpause once I'm holding a stuffed toy again

I mean that was awful but I'm delighted Sam yelled that because there's ALWAYS something else going on underneath Sam, and I've been waiting for more Sam and Mary angst, since I spent so much time on them last season and at least obliquely referred to this... Talked a lot about how hard Sam had it to reconnect with Mary... That Words with Friends scene from 12x07 was basically floating along waiting to come back up at some point or another, but it took Sam a long time to reach out to Mary personally, and really only in 12x14 (hi Berens, I just accept you and Glynn are brain twins these days) did he pick a side in THAT fight and picked Mary. And we said it was to get closer to Mary but he made it all about the BMoL instead of just confronting that he wanted a relationship with her, and the BMoL ended up just keeping them apart ANYWAY and tl;dr am I going to have to write the reverse version of A World Without Monsters from Sam's POV or can we just agree that my subtext in that fic was exactly what just bubbled up here? :P

I just spent the entire length of that paragraph trying to work out when I wrote the meta about how Sam felt about Mary and it took me until that last point to realise it was not a meta, it was a fic where I roundly abused poor Sam for the sake of making that point.

Hey, it's never too late to give Cas that guilt all over again that made him stay in Purgatory out of penance.

I mean among other things but it's probably worth mentioning there are a whole bunch of lil purgatory parallels here in the loosest sense of it being a hostile other realm, and the way Cas is basically Dean in Purgatory in here.

last episode we had James keeping memories of Missouri, who he had cut out of his life, in a box. Now Mia has a box still dedicated to "Buddy" her asshole ex who hurt her, and good on her for leaving him. He's another shifter, we're halfway through the episode, so we probably need to find him now, and also have a good 10 minutes more of whatever's going on with Cas. :P

She also owns up to have done much worse things in her past with Buddy, although presumably not killing people, and probably because they were super toxic together, and she had the sense to get out and try and help people now.

Jack said "I'll come with" which is adorable. He's learning to be like them :D

Wheeeee he's riding shotgun! Guess Dean couldn't make him stay in the back without Sam around.

Sam's plan's don't always work out :< Oh no, Dean, you still don't have much faith in Sam's ability to handle himself.

Fortunately this does seem to be a mostly Sam is right season, and I think of all the overwhelming reasons why you don't trust Jack, not trusting Sam to trust Jack is probably relatively low on the list underneath the Cas stuff or you'd have just yelled that at Sam the other day instead.

Meanwhile Mia explains why her catharsis works to Sam - I hope he doesn't sneak back at the end of the episode for a chat with "Mary" because that would be AWFUL.

oh boy I shouldn't have paused there except that i suppose for the sake of meta-ing remotely clearly it was probably a good idea not to watch straight through from that into the empty accusing Cas of having feeeeelings and "I know *what* you hate, I know *who* you love, what you fear." especially since Cas hates being needed but not wanted and uh Dean made the i/we distinction at long last over on the other side of the story so um does Cas fear something related to all that?

I mean to be fair Cas has been through this exact thing before with "he's in love... with humanity" / "all of it for one man" which was an "i/we" distinction of planetary proportions :P Of course he just mutely responded to it there because he was sad Dean was dead, and had no idea Metatron had accused him of being in love in any form, so that was Metatron's private joke to himself.

The Empty telling Cas there's "nothing for him back there" also makes like next to no sense if you take season 12's family read at surface value and has the bonus of being, I'm pretty sure, a line Elrond tells Arwen in the movie when he's trying to make her leave Aragorn and go across the waters to the undying lands.

I know they're just starting with it in a long selection of terrible things that happened to Cas but starting with his grace being stolen really sucks :P

Especially when I am still daily haunted by his season 9 arc.

Oh no Jack you probably don't feel anything because they made you horribly depressed within 2 days. Also you have angel grace. Historically not good for helping you feel things. You're sweet and cry about your mom and feel bad about stuff in other ways so I think you have a heart no matter what, like Cas does.

Mia gets some catharsis from getting to hug Jack and reassure him that even if he's a monster and what makes him in-human isn't letting him emote how he's supposed to, he can still be good. She's got a monster soul, after all. There's a lot of good monsters out there.

I was about to say lol is this now Sam not on the phone because he actually is a shifter now mostly to tease past!Me but then they panned down and Dean's unconscious, which makes sense because they probably still want to show us Dean tearing his own face off at some point and honestly I'd rather just get it over and done with because if it's still to come after this D:

"that was too friggin easy" though - Dean getting overwhelmed in another fight. He's really not had a great rate of success... He only beat the wraith last episode with Patience's warnings, and other than that it's been a terrible track record even if he fights back as hard as he can when he gets jumped

This Buddy guy is a total douche. He says in this world everyone uses everyone. Which is a theme of the season I guess - Cas feeling used, Jack feeling used... He's the villain with the most negative version of the theme in his mouth right now

Dean's got to pep talk Jack if he wants to save the day or Jack goes and saves the daaay - I'd prefer Jack does it

Look, Mia's getting hurt and she was kind to you and in the most literal use of character mirroring in 1000 miles is an actual stand in for your mom!

Again, though, if this is Cas back in the mortal plane after annoying his way back to life (worrisome, since he's 2 episodes out of reuniting with them and where's Billie? Oh gosh is Billie back for reals too if he IS back? Whaaaat.) then that's another awfully convenient moment to transition scenes from. Dean finally using "i" instead of "we" about Cas and making it abundantly clear that he and sam didn't feel the same about that, was, whether the direct reason or just narrative karma they chose to bestow on Dean, what made Jack reach out to Cas. Now he admits out loud that he doesn't believe in anything with the implication when you look at Dean vs belief that this is about Cas, and we go over to Cas definitely at least in an improved situation.

Goddammit that's the new coat which means he didn't come back naked but wait! Lizzy's hope wasn't the same as everyone else's at all! Although that was a shallow moment of defeat :P Mwa ha ha, I was hoping Cas would come back and be gifted a whole new Cas get up and lo and behold unless he chose to manifest these clothes onto himself and there's noooo ulterior motive at all going on here (uh... probably not going to get more than 1 per show and we used it up on Mary :P) but he's confused and waking up and the last time we saw him he was in the clothes he died in... So of course if he's being sent back to earth then someone else chose the battle armour he'd be returned in. One Cas, fit for purpose.

Also, realising once he sat up more it was the new coat makes me pretty sure he is back on Earth.

Growing old is a gift

What is it like being one year from the big 50? It's such a loaded question. I look back and it amazes me that I’m this old. It also reminds me of my failures, my mistakes, my joys and triumphs. All I can say about life so far. It's a bit of a drama, a few tear jerkers and a lot of comedy. Which year is my favorite year? Every single one. Which is my least favorite? Every single one. Being a parent was and is the most amazing thing that whatever creator or alien or whatever the latest conspiracy theorist believes being a parent is the most amazing frightening crazy time of a person's life. The struggle, the wonder if you will kill them before they turn 18.

I can say my son survived. Barely. After he left out, it was really hard, I found myself asking who am I? Who was I, and who will I become? I can say as an almost grown up, at least my body is grown up, older, brittle, sore, and don’ t get me started on my brain. Ooops let me get back there. Now what was I saying right barely avoiding killing my teenager. Growing a little creature in your belly changes you, I don’t mean looking down and I don’t have toes. I felt secure suddenly as if I knew what I was meant to do with my life. I made good choices and I made some really bad choices, but all in all parenting shaped me, it soothed the anxiety and the fear of not knowing who I was. Or where I belonged. So when my son left home, I fell hard. All the old questions came back. It wasn’t just the emotional change but the dramatic changes in my life, and routine. I no longer had to spend 23 hour of the day caring, and loving and feeding and changing a life. I was no longer needed as a primary caregiver. I was totally lost. I am proud to say I am only slightly lost now. I started to look at the good things. I met my soulmate, good thing, I published my first article? Good things.. I discovered I like to eat cookies, as much as I like baking them. I learned to love myself, to be patient when it came to the questions that still flood my head. Who am I? I am Moria, silly , funny, lovable, a loud snorer and generally a kind person, a little temper, and I cry if I can’t get a fish off my hook when I am fishing.

There were a few good things about getting older. I remember the day my doctor suggested, perhaps it was time for a hysterectomy. I could have been naked in seconds. I could just see that, he turns to get me a referral and I’m naked and ready. Bring it on! For a week before the surgery all I could think was no more Aunt flow, no more on the rag, and no more woman's special time of the month. Special, not the five letter word starting with a B, I was thinking. No other creature on this planet can bleed for 4 to 7 days and not be dead. I would pass by the wall of Girl crap at the grocery store, you know what I mean ladies. Feminine products cover an entire wall or shelf. It is vast don’t forget to bring water, or you might not make it to the other side. Is there really a need for 40000 types of pads, and another 10000 brands of tampons. But on this day I smiled, pointed at this box then that bag. I don’t need you, or you, and you forget about it. People are walking past and glancing curiously as I do a little happy dance. I stood proudly hands on my hips, laughing ha, I am a non bleeder! I laugh again, deeply from that menopausal belly I am free! I laugh again.. And pee. Fuck. Head down I take a few steps to the wall of old lady incontinence products. I sigh, and say aloud, Fuck. It's alway a trade isn’t it folks. You lose something and gain something. Besides what's a little pee, here and there.

I notice, my body is a symphony in itself. Ready and bend down and POP, stand up and CRACK, turn and CRUNCH, take a step and BAM you twist your ankle. I would bow, but my ankle…

The human body goes through 2 puberties ladies. We have all gone through one, but no one tells you after 40, you go through it again. Ladies, no matter how much we run on our damned treadmill there's always going to be that one spot that never gets smaller. Muffin top, that's a word I don’t appreciate. Why ruin the muffin’s reputation? They didn’t do anything wrong. Why name that layer of fat that tips over your jeans muffin tops? Muffin tops are yummy, they taste good and they make you happy. Again leave the muffin alone. Do you remember when your legs didn’t rub together when you walked, so far all it's gotten me is a nausty rash and I can barely move every second day of the week. This leads to me ordering take out Japanese. Can’t cook if you can’t lift anything heavy, like a frying pan. I tell myself if I order Japanese its fish, it's seaweed. How many calories could there possibly be? Then I order the chicken yakisoba and an order of deep fried vegetable tempura. Ding ding ding there's a few million calories. Back on the elliptical. Truly it's a terrible cycle. At some point I assume I’ll just eat as I work out.

What was I saying? I ask my partner that all the time, I can be in the middle of a conversation and suddenly I forget the next word coming from my mouth. Who does this? At least I keep my partner laughing, some days he just watches the chaos, have you ever been making food, you toss the box and have to dig in the garbage can to retrieve it because after four minutes I can’t remember how high to cook it on. I’m lying for 2 minutes. Then rummaging again into the trash to look at it once more. I sometimes laugh at myself. But for the most part, I just stare at my dogs and ask them, Really? Dogs, get dogs they said, they are so amazing, you will love them always. Not totally correct, don’t get me wrong I love my two Chihuahuas 99.999% of the time, Mackie and Lola Mae. But for 4 pound and 5 pound dogs they have a way of taking up most of a queen size bed. They don’t follow the rules very well, and if you don’t give them what they want they will hide under a blanket on their 300 dollar sofa and bark at me, forever. I own a sofa and recliner yet I spend most of my time on the floor. Get dogs, they said it would be fun. It's fun, when they don’t listen, and run straight up to a skunk’s ass. Rock paper scissors is how we decide who does the bathing. We all know that it is a stupid game; and I do the washing. Getting back to the memory thing? Cause in point re read the last paragraph as it had nothing to do really with memory more to do with dogs.

I once lost my wallet for an entire month. What about when someone asks you what your children's year of birth is? Is there anyone out there that suddenly freezes and starts counting toes? Anyone ever play find your glasses? I prefer Clue. Ever forget a phone number! Your own phone number? God help me cell phones have made me stupid. Who memorizes numbers anymore. If you look at my kitchen wall, it's covered in sticky notes. I started buying multi colored packs, at least it looks pretty.

Regardless I look forward to new things, I am still learning, still healing and still laughing. Life has a way of surprising us, I heard someone say once, “Growing old is a gift.” how true those words are. Stay funny, laugh make mistakes, have the big slice of cake!

In season 6, episode 2 of Agents of SHIELD, Melinda May returns to peak fighting form after an injury sidelined her for most of season 5. She single handedly takes on EvilCoulson Sarge’s team, including the Jaco the Giant and Butterfly Snowflake the dirty street fighter. She doesn’t win the fight, but she does gather important intel, free the hostage and jog Sarge’s memory of the word “Coulson”, so it’s a win for the mission.

The other main storyline this episode is Fitz and Enoch’s big space adventure. They’ve signed on to work a long haul run with a crew of xenophobic Sivians in order to get to Naro-Adzia, the planet where cryo pods are made (Jenna was right in her prediction). Fitz disguised his eye color and Enoch taught him the language so that he could blend in with the Sivians. But Enoch forgot to share some important cultural points with Fitz, which lead to them being outed as Terrans. Fitz has to think fast in order to save himself and Enoch without allowing the rest of the crew to be killed instead.

This episode allows viewers to get to know the alien culture that Fitz is involved with better, and the one that Sarge is part of. The writers also take time to further explore Marcus Benson and Agent Keller’s characters. We find out a little more about Sarge and his crew as individuals, including the fact that some teammates are disposable, a very un-Coulson-like attitude.

Recap

Sarge and his crew begin the episode with a convenience store robbery which is part recon, part supply run, part callback to original Coulson’s exploits. They keep up a running commentary about what they think of this planet, as compared to the many other planets they’ve encountered. After examining, then rejecting, a pair of aviator sunglasses, Sarge picks up a cleanser, motor oil and duct tape.

He doesn’t have Coulson’s love of organic soaps, then.

Butterfly Snowflake knocks things off the shelves for fun and picks up a Cincinnati mug. Jaco tries a big blue Slurpee, which gives him a brainfreeze headache. He likes it, though, and hands one to Sarge. Sarge takes a sip from the straw, then leaves the Slurpee next to the cash register.

They move on to harassing the cashier. Sarge says that you can tell a lot about a planet by its currency. When he finds out that this part of Earth uses paper money, he dismissively says, “One of those. At least it’s lighter than coin.” On the other hand, they’re all excited about how much the planet has to offer.

Sarge notices the cashier looking at the gun hidden under the counter. He says, “People fantasize about doing something heroic at times like these.” He takes the gun and aims it at the cashier. “You don’t look like a hero to me.” Then he fires at one of the merchandise displays.

Snowflake gathers up the merchandise he just liberated. Sarge notes that the weapon is so primitive, that it should be easy to do what they came here to do. They each take a last minute item, then leave. Sarge takes a radio and Pax takes a map of Ohio. Jaco brought snacks. Snowflake snagged some electronics.

As they walk away, Sarge slips on the new wraparound sunglasses he chose, in Coulson’s signature move. He carries the box radio like it’s a briefcase. They drive off in the truck, and after a moment, Sarge pulls the lever to make the truck invisible.

Agent Fox is really deceased. It says so in his SHIELD file. Mack leads a memorial service for him in ops, then segues straight into handing out the assignments for the day. Runko will scan for disturbances while Keller and Yo-Yo go over the security footage from the museum. May will supervise the search for Sarge’s truck.

May questions why Mack hasn’t let the entire agency know that there’s someone out there with Coulson’s face. Mack doesn’t want to start an unnecessary panic. They won’t broadcast it until they have an explanation. She asks if he doesn’t believe her. Mack denies it, but his excuses don’t make sense.

It could take a while to identify why the being looks like Coulson. Meanwhile, one agent after another will be shocked to meet up with their beloved former boss in the form of a villain. What happened with Fox will continue to happen. It’s Mack, with his hatred of any kind of robot, alien, duplicate or fake human, who can’t handle facing what Sarge/Coulson might be. The others seem fine, and they need to know what they’re walking into.

Sarge pulls the truck into a shipping container storage yard and parks. They all congregate in the trailer, which serves as their HQ. Jaco is using a breathing apparatus, and coughing. Pax gets angry with him, annoyed by the coughs. Sarge tells him to learn to deal with it, since Jaco hasn’t had his home atmosphere in 9 years.

Snowflake shows Sarge a magazine ad, pointing out than she’ll need some new clothes in order to pass unnoticed on Earth. He promises they’ll get her some.

Sarge asks Pax to check the invisibility cloaking device to make sure it’s stable, but Pax whines that Tinker was the invisibility guy. Then he notices Snowflake looking through Tinker’s bag, and complains that she’s taking his stuff when he’s barely dead. Snowflake tells him that she looking for the PEGs. She confirms that they aren’t there, and confirms that they don’t have any more, now that Tinker turned to concrete with the stones in his pockets.

Pax complains some more about Tinker’s ending. He tells Sarge the they all should have been safely in the truck, including Tinker. Sarge and Snowflake remind him that they always send a team as trailblazers to clear a path for the truck. Pax thinks it should be Jaco alone, since Jaco can survive anything (“a trail of war hammers”). Snowflake agrees that Jaco is an old soul.

An old soul who’s still wheezing into the breathing apparatus. Not looking terribly invincible right now.

Pax brings up the most recent planet they visited.

Pax: “But we have to scramble and torch the place early because she can’t keep her knife in her pants?”

Sarge: “All true so far.”

Pax: “You let her get off. We had a talker, Sarge. But she made him spill his guts, literally.”

Snowflake: “To be reincarnated.”

Pax: “And it all went to hell. And now we’re down a man.”

Sarge: “You want to do things differently?”

Pax: “No. But I certainly don’t want to go digging for PEGs again.”

Jaco shoves a newspaper with a jewelry store ad at him.

Sarge: “See, you were right, Pax. This rock has it all. Now are you good to come with me to secure the exit while these two scout the site, or should we discuss that, too?”

Pax: “No, I’m good. I’m just sorting through it. Tinker died. He was a friend.”

Sarge pats his shoulder: “That’s what friends are for.”

Mack and May check in with Dr Benson, who is examining Tinker’s body, which is still embedded in the concrete wall, a section of which has been brought to the lab for him to work on. Mack tells Benson that he’s having new evidence from a convenience store robbery in Ohio sent to the lab.

Benson says to add it to the pile. He can’t believe he traded tenure for the chance to work in this lab 24/7. He assumes the current crisis is related to one of SHIELD’s previous “mistakes”, then lists off a few of the items from the long list of mistakes: nanomasks, Inhumans, fear manifestations…

Not impressed with Benson and his crustiness so far. He probably cut back or quit drinking when he started his new job, and consequently hates the world even more than usual, since he’s going through alcohol withdrawal.

But no matter the excuse, if his reaction to reading those case files isn’t to get excited about the amazing things he never knew existed, and instead it’s to declare them all mistakes, SHIELD might not be the right place for him. Howard Stark must be spinning in his grave.

Benson brings up LMDs, and suggests that might be an explanation for Tinker and the new Coulson. He says that he wants to talk to the idiot who designed them, putting particular emphasis on the word idiot. Mack, of course, agrees with Benson about the LMDs being the worst thing ever. May says it would be difficult for him to talk to the inventor.

Cut to Fitz, who’s working as a plumber/engineer on an alien ship. He clears the goop blocking a pipe, rescuing the life support system for the ship’s population of viscous Xandarian snails, a delicacy and one of the true delights of the galaxy, as everyone knows. Everyone but Fitz. He thinks they’re digusting. He thought they were disgusting in his other incarnation in the future Lighthouse as Boshtok the Marauder, too, so it’s a consistent character trait.

His coworkers question his taste and ask where he’s from. Fitz gives the wrong answer, since the northern part of Sivos is an irradiated wasteland. They soon ambush him, deducing that he was changing the look of his eyes with an iriscope (the device he used in episode 1). The Sivian Foreman punches Fitz, which causes his eyes to revert back to their normal look.

She wants to know what else he’s hiding, and goes to open the closet he’d been trying to get into when the Sivians found him. Enoch is waiting inside. Viro, the evil captain, has been watching, and orders Fitz and Enoch taken into custody. He’s about to have them thrown out an airlock when Fitz starts talking, telling Viro that the ship needs work and Fitz is the only one who can do it. He’s the best engineer on the ship and Enoch is the best Xandarian snail farmer.

He convinces Viro that the airlock is broken and the heat sheids are misaligned, so the ship won’t survive the next jump. Then he lists some of the repairs he’s already made. But Viro doesn’t want anything to do with Terran scum, so he still plans to throw them out of the aiirlock, until Fitz offers to work for free. Viro agrees to allow Fitz and Enoch to become his slaves, if they can make enough repairs by the time they get to Naro-Adzia.

Sarge and Pax are on top of the shipping containers, taking a look around and enjoying the fresh air, which they don’t get very often. Pax likes Earth so much that he suggests they slow down and enjoy the place for a while, “before it’s reduced to ash.”

Does anyone remember giving consent for the Earth to be reduced to ash? Who signed that contract?

Sarge thinks that stopping to enjoy where they are sounds like powering down. Pax counters that it’s more like charging up. He asks if Sarge ever just relaxed in his original past life. Sarge gives him the evil eye and Pax backs off, saying they’ll get the story of Sarge’s mysterious past eventually. Sarge doesn’t plan on it.

A security guard interrupts them. Pax tries to talk their way out of it, but it doesn’t work. Sarge shoots him, saying it was worth trying to avoid violence.

May suggests that Mack visit Keller personally, since agent Fox was from his hometown and Keller got him the interview for SHIELD. Now Keller feels responsible for Fox’s death. Mack declines, saying he thinks Yo-Yo will be doing the honors.

Keller may have someone to comfort him, but it’s not the same as a visit from the Director of SHIELD, the kind of visit Coulson would frequently make to loved ones of fallen agents. Keller told us in episode 1 how much Mack’s respect means to him.

Yo-Yo stops in to see Keller and says all the right things. She tells him to stop going over Fox’s death in his mind and trying to figure out how he could have changed the outcome. He’ll make himself crazy. Keller identifies with Fox, because their hometowns were next to each other, but Fox was 10 years younger. Elena says she’s here for Keller if he needs her.

They get an alarm telling them that there’s been a Coulson sighting near the convenience store (at the shipping yard). Mack fills in May and Elena, then makes assignments for the mission to track Sarge and Pax down. Now that someone bedsides Melinda has positvely id’d Sarge/Coulson, he’s ready to inform the rest of the agents.

Benson pokes his head out of the lab to complain that he’s feeling left out. The new department head apparently has one setting, and it’s angry conspiracy theorist, turned up to 11. I really didn’t see that coming from one of Andrew Garner’s best, most mainstream friends.

Benson says he was promised transparency, and they’re keeping him in the dark. Mack insists that Benson has access to everything they’ve got. Benson is miffed that no one mentioned Coulson’s habit of dying and coming back to life. The veteran agents are sure that this isn’t THEIR Coulson, so his previous rebirths are irrelevant. Benson is skeptical, since the LMD theory is a bust.

Benson wonders if maybe Coulson never died in the first place, and questions May’s story of Coulson’s death, suggesting she lied and even participated in a cover up of body stealing. May tells him to go back to the bar and stay there if he can’t focus on the mission at hand, which is to find a way to get rid of the entity pretending to be Coulson.

Benson has stirred up all of this ish before he’s even bothered to present the evidence he actually has. Nobody but him thought the other Coulson was an LMD, so why get so worked up that he wasn’t one? He has access to Coulson’s ~25 year long service record. Did he ask someone to go over it with him in detail? The guy had a busy life, much of it classified and likely above Benson’s clearance level. He’s going to have to be more independent than this if he’s going to survive SHIELD.

And, oh yeah, he does have some useful evidence. He just had to waste everyone’s emotional energy and time before presenting it. He was given the straw from Sarge’s Slurpee to take a DNA sample from. He was able to isolate the DNA, and it was an exact match for Phil Coulson.

But before Benson could even see the DNA, he had to strip away radiation markers he’s never seen before and foreign methyl groups that made the sample seem alien.

Methyl-groups= DNA methylation is a process that helps regulate gene expression – so basically he has the same DNA sequence, but isn’t using all of the genes in the same way.

So we have a human who’s been augmented in some way with alien genetic/chemical processing. Know whose origin story that sounds like to me? Captain Marvel. Coulson, sadly, didn’t get fused with the energy of the Tesseract. But there’s a good chance the Kree or Confederacy took our newly dead Coulson, or one from another timeline, revived him, and altered his biochemistry and memories until he didn’t even know he was human anymore, just like they did with Carol Danvers. They must have either taken him back in time for a while in order to hide him, or used a Coulson from an earlier point in a different timeline. There’s a little bit of Winter Soldier in there, too, since he seems to be on a long-term destructive mission, and now he’s been sent to kill his own people.

Jaco carefully places a metal panel against the inside wall of the truck. Sarge watches him, snacking on something in a bag. Once the panel is in place, Sarge tells Jaco to watch out for Pax. He’s acting like Tinker. Jaco replies, “They all crack sooner or later.” Sarge agrees, saying, “Might not be a bad idea to start looking for replacements.”

Sounds like Tinker’s death wasn’t quite as accidental as it seemed.

Sarge picks up an alien paint gun and paints a 6 foot oval line on the metal panel. He asks Snowflake if another machine is in working order. She thinks so, but Tinker was the expert. They just need to get the PEGs to make it sing.

Sarge: “First the lock in, then we rampage.”

Why do I hear that in a Wayne’s World voice?

Fitz and Enoch make Viro’s repairs and bicker over Xandarian snails and Xenophobia. Enoch thinks it should have been obvious that Fitz should pretend to like snails. Fitz thinks Enoch could have given him a few more details on alien culture to work with. Of course, it wasn’t alien culture that exposed him, it was an alien geography blunder- he said he lived in a far northern irradiated wasteland.

Moving on, Enoch is revealed as the optimist of the pair, who’s sure they’ll get Fitz back into cryo and stop the mass extinction event (which has already been stopped). Fitz thinks their odds are slipping and he just wants to get back to Jemma (who’s also chasing him across the galaxy).

Viro calls them in to say that it took a few hours, but he finally figured out that slaves are more cost effective than paid employees, so the rest of the engineering staff will be disembarking through the airlock well before their stop. Fitz suggests he train the rest of the crew to be more efficient, but Viro really has his heart set on spacing them.

Is it me, or does Viro’s tattoo look like they took a Sharpie and drew it on?

Mack is in his office trying to get a little late night paperwork done. You have to admire his work ethic. His commitment to the job and the people are his strengths as a leader.

Benson joins him in order to engage in a little more mind f–kery. He tells Mack that he’s known for his honesty, which is strange, because he circles around everything before he gets to the truth. He’s only honest when forced, like a true alcoholic.

He wants to know who Coulson was, then he clarifies that he wants to know who Coulson was to May. Mack tells him that Coulson is a memory that’s too painful for May to revisit, but that memory is running around killing people. Benson is suddenly sympathetic and decides he needs to help stop the fake Coulson.

Sarge and the rampagers visit a jewelery store. Sarge works the saleswoman, trying to get her to show him the best stuff. But halfway through, he switches gears and tells her it’s a robbery, without missing a beat or changing his tone of voice. He gives her the same speech as he gave the store clerk about not bothering to be a hero.

Snowflake kills 2 guards and tells them they’ll come back as butterflies. Pax is annoyed with her and tells her they don’t all come back. Sarge tells the saleswoman he didn’t think this would be that violent. He notices that she tripped the silent alarm, but promises not to kill her, since they need her help to get into the vault.

May and Yo-Yo investigate the shipping yard to figure out what Sarge was defending. May asks Yo-Yo if she and Keller are already involved. She tells Yo-Yo that Mack already knows, and to be careful. Yo-Yo is exasperated, because May just told her yesterday to go for it and not worry too much about Mack.

Now May has her own personal workplace romance coming back to haunt her, bigtime.

Mack radios that Sarge and co have been spotted at the jewelry store.

The jewelry saleswoman, Dana, gets the aliens into the vault. Snowflake quickly puts a knife to her throat, lovingly telling her that death is just the beginning. Sarge grumpily tells her she doesn’t have to kill everyone. Some people might be useful later. Then he uses the alien paint gun to make a red oval on the vault wall.

Pax puts a device that looks like an LED puck light on the wall and the matter inside the red circle disappears, revealing the inside of the truck and Jaco, who smiles and waves. The metal panel, red paint and puck device combine to make portable portals. Sarge tells them to stop wasting time.

Meanwhile, out in space, the other engineers are being herded toward their deaths. Fitz can’t stand to sit and watch that happen without trying to stop it. If he did, he couldn’t look Jemma in the eye afterward. He wants to at least try to fight.

Enoch informs Fitz that he’s not that kind of Chronicom. Enoch doesn’t think fighting will work. Fitz might as well go straight to the airlock. Fitz agrees, that’s a good plan.

The SHIELD team, including May, Yo-Yo and Keller, reach the jewelry store. They’re confused that the aliens locked themselves in the vault without an exit strategy. It’s extremely un-Coulson-like. May uses a scanner and discovers an extra person in the vault. They realize the aliens have some kind of tech they use to escape. For lack of a better plan, they work to break into the vault through the door and locks.

The aliens are frustrated by all of the diamonds, gold and jewels they’re finding. Earth people have no sense of value, with their paper money and jewelry made from lumps of carbon. Sarge and his gang need PEGs. (= PiezoElectric Gems= Crystals that are naturally polarized and can generate an electric charge under applied mechanical pressure.)

Dana points them to the cheap quartz and topaz in the bottom drawer. The aliens stock up.

May goes back to the shipping yard to see if they missed something. She notices tire tracks that just disappear. When she throws dirt at the spot where the tracks stop, it forms the outline of a truck. She uses that as her rough guide to climb inside.

Fitz stands near the airlock and bravely, but ineffectually, holds up his wrench, trying to stop Viro from killing everyone else. Viro doesn’t even take him seriously. Fitz steps into the airlock with the other engineers. Viro decides that everyone is replaceable and throws the switch to open the airlock. Enoch and Fitz nod to each other.

Fitz tries one more time to stop Viro from what he’s about to do, but Viro is unmoving. Enoch grabs hold of something as Viro flips the switch and the main cabin loses pressure. Everyone who wasn’t in the airlock is sucked out into space, except Enoch. The female engineer who caught him out, thanks Fitz for his help. He tells the engineers they’re safe now.

Enoch tells Fitz that he was right to assume Viro would be the worst and choose the most violent option available. Fitz says, “There’s a part of me that knows how uncompromising hateful men can be.” He looks haunted as he says it.

Coulson steps outside with the machine they’re planning to use, whatever it is. It looks a lot like a supersized tesseract laser gun/leaf blower. He says he’ll get it powered up.

I can’t be the only one thinking about that giant gun he used when he confronted Loki in Avengers, just before Loki killed him the first time. Hopefully he understands what this one does.

Pax is going through quartz crystals. He tells Jaco to take everything in the vault, since they can sell it all.

May politely knocks on the truck door. When Pax opens up, she punches him in the face and asks where Coulson is. May fights Pax and beats him easily. Jaco the giant is next. He’s about 3 times the size of May, so she gets to show off her skills, but she still beats him. Then it’s a brief tussle with with Snowflake to free the hostages and close the portal with Snowflake isolated in the vault.

May is in the truck, and it’s time for round 2 with Jaco after his break. He sends her to the foor, then lets Snowflake out of the vault. Snowflake never wants to be left out of the killing, and those 2 are best buds.

Dana the hostage runs past Sarge, screaming her head off, even though they’re in the middle of nowhere. Sarge just watches. His day has gotten out of control. He heads back into the truck, where May is taking on Snowflake and Jaco by herself, and holding her own.

The Cavalry is back in town.

Sarge steps into the truck and makes a dry comment about their inabilty to function without him for 3 minutes. May has momentarily subdued her adversaries, so she stops and stares at him, saying, “Coulson?”

That gives Snowflake time to grab the portal panel and put it on the floor behind May, where it still has an opening into the vault. Snowflake shoves the panel against May’s heels so that she falls backwards through the portal. Sarge reaches into the vault and grabs the puck device. As soon as the device clears the vault, the portal closes.

Why do I feel like it’s not the first time they’ve used that trick, including the part where Sarge causes a distraction? Coulson always did have that side of him that loved a good con.

But, wow, Pax is useless. Placing my bet now that Sarge decides he wants May as one of the replacements on the team.

Anyhow, the rest of the team finally get through the door just after the portal closes. They’re surprised to find May alone in the vault. Yo-Yo asks her, “What happened?” May tells her, “I lost.” She has some of her old fire inside when she says it.

Sarge and Jaco drive the truck away. Jaco accuses Sarge of freezing when May said the word Coulson. Jaco asks what it means. Sarge says he doesn’t know, but it sounds familiar. He looks pensive.

Benson calls Mack down to the lab to show him the footage he found on Tinker’s biochip. He pours Mack a drink, and says he’ll need it.

On the video, Jaco watches as streams on pure black bat-birds, it’s hard to tell which, fill the sky on an alien planet. After a moment, it becomes clear that everything on the planet is becoming a bat-bird- the mountains, plants, rocks, the entire planet. Sarge walks over and calmly looks at what’s happening, with his giant gun on his shoulder. He tells Jaco and whoever is working the camera that it’s the end of the line for this planet, they need to “get out while we still can.”

The distance shots are very reminiscent of the ashes after Thanos’ snap, which can’t be an accident. Maybe something in the mechanism/magic is the same. We also saw these bat-birds last week when the basketball turned to glass and shattered just before the portal through the cement wall opened.

Are they bats or are they birds? These seem to be birds.

Fitz and Enoch look out the spaceship window at Naro-Adzia, their destination. Fitz asks if they’ll be safe if they stop there now. Enoch tells him they’ll have a hard time hiding that they’re the ones who killed the Controller. The rest of the crew will receive the death sentence as mutineers. Enoch begins to hatch a plan to save himself and Fitz by hiding in the snail tanks, but, besides requiring Fitz to get in the snail tank, it doesn’t protect the rest of the crew, so Fitz vetos it.

Enoch suggests an alternate plan of taking the crew to the planet of Kitson, where they should be able to find new jobs easily. The ship has just enough fuel to make it there.

I’m sure absolutely nothing will go wrong on the way to Kitson.

Fitz decides to put off going into cryo in order to become captain of his own ship and take the engineering refugees to Kitson. He tells Enoch that he’s got time before he needs to go into cryo. Is this the beginning of Fitz becoming the Dread Pirate Roberts Marauder Boshtok? I need space pirate Fitz, okay? I probably need 10 seasons of space pirates Daisy, Fitz and Simmons.

Enoch and Fitz fly their ship off into the sunset toward Kitson. As they fade from view, the Zephyr jumps out of Hyperdrive or whatever we’re calling it. Simmons and Fitz missed each other at Naro-Adzia by 5 minutes.

Daisy is still stunned, and asks Simmons what she just did. Simmons says, “He’s here, I can feel it.” She pulls out Fitz’s wedding ring, which she’s wearing on a chain around her neck, presumably until she can give it to him again.

Commentary

Prediction: Agent Fox will be “reincarnated” as a replacement for Tinker or Pax. I remember thinking last season that the Kree/Confederacy could easily be taking the bodies of Earth’s newly dead and reviving them to use as slaves.

If the Kree also wipe their memories and send them to a different time period, you get the Chronos storyline from Legends of Tomorrow, in which Mick Rory/Heatwave appeared to be abandoned on an isolated planet, so the evil Time Masters kidnapped him, did some Matrix-style wiping and retraining, then sent him out into the timestream as a bounty hunter for several hundred years before eventually sending him after his old teammates. By that time, the only thing he remembered about them was his hatred of them for leaving him behind.

It’s not much of a stretch to imagine Phil Coulson in a similar storyline.

Benson is mighty critical for a SHIELD newby. Is he going to be AoS’s General Ross, picking apart every mission and deciding it was flawed for out of context reasons? Surely they could have found some other hotshot scientist to bring in. There have to be some out of work SHIELD and HYDRA scientists left floating around. Last season, Mack’s friend the Candyman had a whole list.

We all know Sarge didn’t shoot at the end because it was May. They set up the excuse that he only kills people when necessary, but May has caused way more trouble for him than Fox.

That’s What Friends Are For: What Does Sarge & Pax’s Conversation Really Mean?

There are several interesting bits in this conversation. Sarge’s crew had to evacuate from their last planet in a hurry because Snowflake let her bloodthirstiness get out of control and killed someone too early, which ruined their plan and caused them to destroy “the place” earlier than they’d planned>>> They’d planned on “torching” the place.

Based on the video that Benson eventually shows Mack, it looks like they torched the planet by turning it into black birds. From a distance, the effect looks similar to the way living things killed by the snaps disintegrated into large pieces of dust, but this includes everything, even the mountains. The birds could be an illusion, rather than being alive. That actually makes more sense. The video also implies that Sarge’s giant gun shoots the deathwave that causes planetary demolecularization.

Sarge has no problem with most forms of murder and mayhem, as long as it doesn’t distract from the mission, and sometimes even when it does. Jaco and Snowflake are his two loyal, longstanding teammates, who he’ll defend and take care of. Tinker and Pax, not so much. Sarge saw Tinker as disposable. He’ll forgive Jaco and Snowflake more easily, and is unapologetic about playing favorites. Pax isn’t smart enough to have figured out yet that he’s on the disposable side of the line as well.

On their last planet they were interrogating someone, who was giving them good information, until Snowflake killed him. To me, this calls Snowflake’s loyalties into question (is she a double agent for someone?) and brings up the question of what they’re questioning people about.

Are they hunting a powerful fugitive who’s hunting them back? Are they fugitives looking for justice and revenge? Are they part of some nihilistic death cult? Snowflake’s beliefs suggest that she’s on a crusade to set the sinners free from this life, so they can try again in their next life/reincarnation. Are they attempting to provide this service on a planetwide basis, and maybe being paid to do so?

In this timeline, is Thanos in love with Death and sending her gifts, like in the comics? Is that who Sarge and co work for?

How cool would it be if the MCU did both storylines?

Setting souls free so they can do better in the next life would be thematically simliar to Thanos’ reasons for the snap, and would fit the pattern AoS has developed of matching the film side of the MCU thematically rather than in specific details. Endgame was as much about watching the people who were left behind try to reinvent themselves in order to move forward with their lives as it was about undoing the snap. Metaphorical and real reincarnation was explored throughout the film, and will probably continue to be explored in the next several films.

AoS has explored metaphorical and real reincarnation many times before, starting with Coulson and the TAHITI Project, and coming full circle in season 5 with Yo-Yo encountering another version of herself, who told her about other versions of the rest of the team, from different timelines. The word reincarnation was never used, but it’s one way to look at it. Season 5 also brought back the Kree version of the TAHITI method, which was used to bring Tess back to life. She was another reincarnation of herself.

Both Tess and Yo-Yo came back somewhat changed, after the trauma they went through in dying and being revived. Unlike Coulson, their memories weren’t wiped, so they were left angry, bitter and hopeless about the future. Could this partially explain the difference between our Coulson and Sarge?

The female member of Sarge’s team seems to be named Snowflake this week, even though IMDb had her as Butterfly last week. The actress has confirmed it’s Snowflake.

Both are interesting, in terms of her obsession with killing to facilitate reincarnation.. Butterflies go through metamorphosis and change from worms to flying creatures. Snowflakes are unique and ephemeral, but are part of the water cycle, so their essence is never lost. Butterflies reincarnate as themselves, with a new, if altered body, while snowflakes join the cosmic consciousness and reincarnate as a small part of that whole.

Sarge is annoyed by Pax’s minor grumblings, but not by Snowflake’s continuous need to send others back to the cosmic consciousness or the next stage of evolution. Is this how they get their replacements? Does Snowflake assassinate potentials until one feels right and s/he gets revived/reincarnated and stays with them?

Snowflake could be AoS’s variation on comic book character Layla Miller, a mutant with the code name Butterfly, who has the power to reanimate the newly dead. She does not have the power to give them their souls back, so they lack compassionate and their personalities are changed. Layla can also see through distortions in reality, allowing her to retain her true memories when reality has been changed and able to restore the memories of others.

She’s a fighter with increased durability, speed and strength. She also studied magic with Victor Von Doom. In the comics, Daisy Johnson asks her to join the Secret Warriors to help Nick Fury prepare for the Skrull Invasion.

There are enough connections between Layla/Butterfly/Snowflake and the MCU/AoS to make the elements of her story worth kieeping in mind. Agents of SHIELD never lifts a character or plot directly from the comics. But we know that the Skrulls and the Kree have already been here.
