KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) -Corporate services provider Amicorp Group has denied allegations it knowingly facilitated more than $7 billion in fraudulent transactions related to the misappropriation of funds from scandal-hit Malaysian state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad. Amicorp will defend itself and dispute the relief sought by 1MDB in court following a legal claim of more than $1 billion filed by the Malaysian sovereign wealth fund in the British Virgin Islands, Amicorp said in a statement late on Monday. 1MDB filed the claim against Amicorp and its CEO, alleging that they played a vital role in enabling the sovereign wealth fund to be defrauded between 2009 and 2014. The claim is among one of the biggest filed by 1MDB related to the multibillion dollar graft scandal. 1MDB alleges Hong Kong-headquartered Amicorp created and managed a complex conspiracy consisting of layers of shell companies, sham transactions, and fraudulent financial structures that obscured the true origin and destination of the funds. Amicorp said the misappropriated 1MDB funds were "ill-gotten by or for the benefit" of Malaysian senior government officials and the United Arab Emirates sovereign funds' top senior management. Malaysian and U.S. investigators have previously estimated $4.5 billion was siphoned away from 1MDB following its inception in 2009, implicating former prime minister Najib Razak, Goldman Sachs (GS.N) staff and high-level officials elsewhere. Najib is currently in prison but has denied wrongdoing. !function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s)if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function()n.callMethod? n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments);if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n;n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0';n.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0;t.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0];s.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)(window, document,'script','https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/fbevents.js'); https://i-invdn-com.investing.com/news/LYNXNPEB9M0BY_L.jpg 2024-12-24 01:20:36

Najib Razak: Malaysia's Political Landscape and Latest Developments
Najib Razak’s tenure was marked by significant economic growth and development projects, but it was also overshadowed by allegations of corruption. The most notorious scandal, known as 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad), has been described as one of the largest financial frauds in history. Najib, along with several associates, was accused of embezzling billions from the state investment fund, which purportedly financed extravagant lifestyles and high-profile assets globally.
The 1MDB scandal led to a seismic shift in Malaysia's political climate. In the 2018 general elections, Najib’s party, the Barisan Nasional (BN), was defeated by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, which campaigned heavily on anti-corruption platforms. This defeat was a direct consequence of the public’s dissatisfaction with corruption scandals and governance issues.
Post-election, Najib Razak faced intense scrutiny and legal action. In July 2020, Malaysia Najib News he was found guilty of corruption and money laundering by Malaysia's High Court, resulting in a 12-year prison sentence and a substantial fine. The court's decision was a landmark moment in Malaysia’s fight against corruption, symbolizing a pivotal shift towards accountability and transparency in the country's political system.
Despite the legal verdict, Najib has maintained his stance that he is a victim of political persecution. He has consistently appealed his conviction, arguing that the charges against him are politically motivated. His legal team has been active in challenging the court’s decisions, further prolonging the high-profile case and keeping it in the public eye.
The political ramifications of Najib’s legal battles are profound. His case has become a touchstone for discussions on governance, corruption, Malaysia Newstoday and the rule of law in Malaysia. It has sparked debates on the effectiveness of the Malaysian judicial system and the influence of political power on legal proceedings. Najib’s supporters argue that the legal actions against him are a continuation of political vendettas, while his detractors view them as a necessary step towards restoring integrity in Malaysian politics.
In addition to the legal drama, Najib's political influence continues to be a subject of significant interest. Despite his conviction, he remains a prominent figure in Malaysian politics, with a considerable following among certain segments of the population. His continued presence in the political arena has implications for future elections and party dynamics in Malaysia.
As of the latest developments, Najib's legal team is exploring further avenues for appeal, including seeking international intervention and support. The outcome of these legal maneuvers will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of both Najib’s political career and Malaysia’s political landscape.

He remains on trial in multiple cases related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a state fund he established as prime minister to spur economic development but that investigators say was instead plundered to buy the Equanimity superyacht, high-end properties, and finance the production of the Wolf of Wall Street film starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Investigators have said some $4.5bn was stolen, with hundreds of millions ending up in accounts linked to the former prime minister.
Najib was acquitted of audit tampering in connection with 1MDB, but has not shown any contrition for the scandal. He has sought to focus attention on Jho Low, the Malaysian financier who is accused of masterminding the scheme and is now a fugitive.
More to come…

The Christian Fetish: Modernity, Whiteness and the Christian Imaginary in Malaysia
By C. Schultz, 2019. Read it here.
Abstract:
The 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad) scandal and 2018 elections brought the corruption and nepotism of Malaysian politics to international attention. For my Christian Dusun interlocutors in the Ranau hinterlands of Sabah, Malaysia, one effect of corruption, as well as state-driven ‘Islamisation’, is that many people no longer trust their government, the moral failings of which are viewed as unchristian. Crucially, Western liberal democracies are often imagined as being both Christian and white, stimulating optimistic interpretations of racial whiteness. In this article, I employ theories of the fetish to unveil the inspired ‘cultural criticism’ that emerges at the interface of two social worlds (Spyer, Patricia. 1988. Introduction. In Border Fetishisms: Material objects in unstable spaces, edited by Patricia Spyer, pp. 1–12. Psychology Press; Graeber, David. 2005. Fetishism as Social Creativity or, Fetishes are Gods in the Process of Construction. Anthropological Theory, 5(4):407–438). The affective relations between people, images and ideas in postcolonial Ranau contributed to the construction of my embodied racial identity, orang putih (white person), which was fetishised by Christian Dusun as a ‘container’ (Newell, Sasha. 2014. The Matter of the Unfetish: Hoarding and the Spirit of Possessions. HAU: Journal of Ethnographic Theory, 4(3):185–213) of hope for their own Christian future.
