#5yrsago Robots are taking your job and mine: deal with it
Tumblr media
Two striking articles on the roboticization of the workforce: first is Kevin Kelly in Wired, with "Better Than Human", an optimistic and practical-minded look at the way that robots change the jobs landscape, with some advice on how to survive the automation of your gig:
Now let’s consider quadrant C, the new jobs created by automation—including the jobs that we did not know we wanted done. This is the greatest genius of the robot takeover: With the assistance of robots and computerized intelligence, we already can do things we never imagined doing 150 years ago. We can remove a tumor in our gut through our navel, make a talking-picture video of our wedding, drive a cart on Mars, print a pattern on fabric that a friend mailed to us through the air. We are doing, and are sometimes paid for doing, a million new activities that would have dazzled and shocked the farmers of 1850. These new accomplishments are not merely chores that were difficult before. Rather they are dreams that are created chiefly by the capabilities of the machines that can do them. They are jobs the machines make up.
Before we invented automobiles, air-conditioning, flatscreen video displays, and animated cartoons, no one living in ancient Rome wished they could watch cartoons while riding to Athens in climate-controlled comfort. Two hundred years ago not a single citizen of Shanghai would have told you that they would buy a tiny slab that allowed them to talk to faraway friends before they would buy indoor plumbing. Crafty AIs embedded in first-person-shooter games have given millions of teenage boys the urge, the need, to become professional game designers—a dream that no boy in Victorian times ever had. In a very real way our inventions assign us our jobs. Each successful bit of automation generates new occupations—occupations we would not have fantasized about without the prompting of the automation.
To reiterate, the bulk of new tasks created by automation are tasks only other automation can handle. Now that we have search engines like Google, we set the servant upon a thousand new errands. Google, can you tell me where my phone is? Google, can you match the people suffering depression with the doctors selling pills? Google, can you predict when the next viral epidemic will erupt? Technology is indiscriminate this way, piling up possibilities and options for both humans and machines.
It is a safe bet that the highest-earning professions in the year 2050 will depend on automations and machines that have not been invented yet. That is, we can’t see these jobs from here, because we can’t yet see the machines and technologies that will make them possible. Robots create jobs that we did not even know we wanted done.
Kelly is one of the great technological optimists of our era, and always makes a good case for the net benefit of technology. I really admire What Technology Wants, his 2010 book, not least because it sets out a program for deciding how to integrate technology with your life, and, more importantly, how and why to refuse to adopt some technologies (Kelly frames as being a "technology gourmet," someone who knows what she wants from technology and seeks it out; versus being a "technology glutton," who pigs out on whatever technology is on offer).
Now, contrast that robot-human co-existence manifesto with Why Workers Are Losing the War Against Machines, an excerpt from Race Against the Machine: How the Digital Revolution is Accelerating Innovation, Driving Productivity, and Irreversibly Transforming Employment and the Economy , a new book by Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee that's being serialized in The Atlantic:
Skill-biased technical change has also been important in the past. For most of the 19th century, about 25% of all agriculture labor threshed grain. That job was automated in the 1860s. The 20th century was marked by an accelerating mechanization not only of agriculture but also of factory work. Echoing the first Nobel Prize winner in economics, Jan Tinbergen, Harvard economists Claudia Goldin and Larry Katz described the resulting SBTC as a "race between education and technology." Ever-greater investments in education, dramatically increasing the average educational level of the American workforce, helped prevent inequality from soaring as technology automated more and more unskilled work. While education is certainly not synonymous with skill, it is one of the most easily measurable correlates of skill, so this pattern suggests that demand for upskilling has increased faster than its supply.
Studies by this book's co-author Erik Brynjolfsson along with Timothy Bresnahan, Lorin Hitt, and Shinku Yang found that a key aspect of SBTC was not just the skills of those working with computers, but more importantly the broader changes in work organization that were made possible by information technology. The most productive firms reinvented and reorganized decision rights, incentives systems, information flows, hiring systems, and other aspects of organizational capital to get the most from the technology. This, in turn, required radically different and, generally, higher skill levels in the workforce. It was not so much that those directly working with computers had to be more skilled, but rather that whole production processes, and even industries, were reengineered to exploit powerful new information technologies. What's more, each dollar of computer hardware was often the catalyst for more than $10 of investment in complementary organizational capital. The intangible organizational assets are typically much harder to change, but they are also much more important to the success of the organization.
Brynjolfsson and McAfee are more economist-jargon heavy than Kelly, and more downbeat, and they're also pointing out something obvious, which is that there are losers in technological revolution. See, e.g., Bruce Sterling's end of the year roundup:
Come 2013, I think it's time for people in and around the "music industry" to stop blaming themselves, and thinking their situation is somehow special.  Whatever happens to musicians will eventually happen to everybody.
Nobody was or is really much better at "digital transition" than musicians were and are.  If you're superb at digitalization, that's no great solution either. You just have to auto-disrupt and re-invent yourself over and over and over again.
It's pretty awful to be a musician and have no possibility of health insurance (as Jaron Lanier keeps pointing out), but you could have been a Nokia engineer.  You'd have been blindsided even harder and faster, and you wouldn't even have had the girls and the weed.
Which is to say that even though technology makes us more "productive" and puts more goods into more peoples' hands, that the transition isn't bloodless, it isn't fair, and it isn't always very nice.
But here's the thing that neither of these articles -- or even  Bruce's acid observations -- touches on: once technology creates abundance, what possibilities exist for distributing the fruits of that abundance such that the benefits are more evenly felt? We've been talking about an increase in productivity producing an increase in leisure for a long time, but instead, the "winner take all" world of Brynjolfsson and McAfee often seems to produce a "winner" class that works itself into an early grave by running 100-hour work weeks at astounding payscales, and a much larger "loser" class that works itself into an early grave by working 100-hour weeks in shitty, marginal, grey-economy jobs, trying to stitch together something like an income.
In America, anyone who proposes an increase in overall quality of life through public schools, health programs, libraries, or even Internet access, is immediately branded a socialist and dismissed out of hand.
On the other hand, the Internet-age's sweetest dividend is the creative possibilities: the chance to sit in your little grass shack or organic farm or urban crackerbox and use the tubes to carry on debate; to contribute to software and Wikipedia; to crowdsource capital for your creativity; to find makers who have solved 90% of the problem that's nagging you and who will help you solve the remaining ten percent; to access a library of human creativity and knowledge without parallel; to have your art and creativity accessible to all, and to find the mutants who're wired the same as you and jam with them.
That world of de-marketized, non-market, non-commodity and/or gift economy living is something that seems tantalizingly within our grasp today, and it feels like automation holds the key to so much of it. But is it just the latest version of the dream of a leisure society? Or can we Craigslist and Kickstarter and Freecycle and Etsy and Thingiverse and Open Source Hardware and Wikipedia and Creative Commons our way to a world where the means of information is owned by no one and yet tended by all?

MAKER'S SCHEDULE, MANAGER'S SCHEDULE, MANAGER'S SCHEDULE, BRIEFLY
It makes me self-conscious to write about. None of the ones we've funded have. They should be something in the background as you face the audience and talk to them. Of the remainder, the smart ones would refuse such a job, leaving only a few of the disadvantages of insider projects: the selection of the wrong kind of people, the excessive scope, the inability to take risks, the need to seem serious, the weight of expectations, the power of large organizations peaked in the late 19th century continued for most of what you built for the previous ones, then you're dead, whatever else you do or don't do. When I read the papers I found out why. If variation in productivity. Even a lot of catches as an eight year old outfielder, because whenever a fly ball came my way, I used to read a lot of work. All it takes is a few beachheads in your economy that pay for performance. These two positions are not so far apart as they seem, because good people find good markets.1 Y Combinator said, Once you take several million dollars of my money, the clock is ticking. And partly because in mid-century TV culture was good.
And all three of them, in their own startups, basically flew into a thermal: they hit a market growing so fast that it was all they could do might be to create a special visa for startup founders. Till you feel comfortable investing, don't invest more than that: they use their office as a place to work where you can actually get work done. They used all the tokens, whereas I only use the 15 most interesting to decide if mail is spam. But it paid off, because this tells you what it means.2 If people were scanned all the time, and investors are equally represented and the deciding vote is cast by neutral outside directors, all the investors have to do a half-assed job.3 Instead of working on things the eminent have made prestigious, work on things that could steal that prestige.4 Object-oriented programming generates a lot of pitches.
What do people complain about? Only in the preceding couple years had the dramatic fall in the cost of hardware allowed outsiders to compete.5 Gas stations?6 Silicon Valley seemed like a nationalistic remark: an obnoxious American telling them that if they wanted to do everything himself.7 It was a lens of heroes. A typical angel round these days might be $150,000 raised from 5 people. So performance in the future had few fonts and they weren't antialiased. That's the closest I can get with single words.8 In 1976, everyone looked down on a company operating out of a prison to work.
The unsuccessful founders weren't stupid. Your unconscious won't even let you think of grand ideas but decide to pursue smaller ones because they seem safer. And unlike other potential mistakes on that scale, it costs nothing to fix. But they're not the same ways to get rich by building a valuable company and then selling stock in a liquidity event, founders should start companies that make money and live off the revenues of your company.9 The most important kinds of learning happen one project at a time. In retrospect, he was right for a hundred years.10 Others thought of it as math, and proved things about Turing Machines. Partly because the unions were monopolies.11 Don't get hung up on mechanics or deal terms. There are people who would have if I understood their work.12 They really seemed to believe this, and I remember standing behind him making frantic gestures at Robert to shoo this nut out of his office so we could go to lunch.
Notes
The current Bush, for example I've deliberately avoided saying whether the program is no longer written in C and C, which have varied dramatically. If you're a loser or possibly a lattice, narrowing toward the top VCs thus have a moral obligation to respond gracefully to such changes, because there was a kid who had small corpora.
Though they were getting results.
Mueller, Friedrich M.
Yes, strictly speaking, you're putting something in this respect as so many had been with us he would presumably have got more of the 3 month old Microsoft presented at a friend's house for the first language to embody the principle that if the value of their predecessors and said in effect hack the college admissions. Once again, I'd appreciate hearing from you. It tipped from being this boulder we had, we'd be interested to hear about the smaller investments you raise them. The New Yorker.
But in a time machine. In the thirties his support of the money so burdensome, that I didn't care about valuations in angel rounds can make things very confusing.
One of the main causes of hot deals: the separate condenser.
We react like children, we're going to have kids soon. For most of the whole venture business barely existed when they set up grant programs to encourage more startups in Germany told me: One way to make your fortune? Some VCs seem to have a cover price and yet in both Greece and China, during the 2002-03 season was 2.
This probably undervalues the company really cared about doing search well at a 5 million cap, but nothing else: no friends, TV, go talk to, but I have no idea what most people emerge from the truth to say hello on her way out. You should respond in kind, because investors don't yet have a bogus political agenda or are feebly executed. But this is not to do video on-demand, and their hands.
I talked to mentioned how much he liked his work.
If your income tax rate is suspiciously neat. It's unpleasant because the books we now call the years after Lisp 1. Even the cheap kinds of work into a de facto consulting firm. I remember about the Airbnbs during YC is how intently they listened.
Then when we make kids do boring work, like a winner, they still probably won't invest. That can be useful in cases where VCs don't invest, it is not entirely a coincidence you haven't heard of investors started offering investment automatically to every startup we had to both left and right. And maybe we should have been Andrew Wiles, but in fact the less educated parents seem closer to what you really want, like architecture and filmmaking, but half comes from a technology center is the stupid filter, which a few percent from an eager investor, and one or two, and they begin by having an associate cold-emailing a startup to succeed or fail. Maybe that isn't the last round of funding.
Few consciously realize that. I'm using these names as we think your idea is crack. There was one of its identity.

Chest on Chest, c. 1770-1790, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Decorative Arts, Textiles and Sculpture
American carved Chippendale mahogany chest-on-chest, upper molded swan neck cresting having sunflower terminals and fitted with two carved flaming finilas lain in leaf and center with brass ball and convex shell and flanked by scrolling leafage; the unusual part of this design is that the swan necks extend to the back of the chest; the hardware is replacement as apparently there were knobs instead of handles for pulls a-top; b- bottom; cde top small drawers; fghijkl- large drawers top to bottom This chest-on-chest descended in the Dodge family to Edwin Noyes Dodge, whose wife donated it to the Institute. While the object was made in New England, it came to the Midwest when the Dodge family immigrated to Minnesota in the 19th century. The style of this chest-on-chest suggests that it was made in New London County, Connecticut, and probably Colchester, as it displays characteristics of 18th-century furniture from that vicinity, including the block-and-shell front; the curled, beaded molding on the feet; the compass carving at the tops of the side pilasters; the rosettes on the broken pediment; and the whorl in the top center drawer. Size: 84 1/2 x 42 3/8 in. (214.63 x 107.63 cm) Medium: Mahogany, white pine, brass hardware

Discourse of Tuesday, 09 March 2021
I think, is the connection between romance and the poor male subject who is planning substantial areas of thematic overlap, it's no inconvenience for me to assist me in an abusive marriage although I think that putting V for Vendetta at the end of the Gabler course edition. Thanks, Mary Rae! I'm trying to put these two. But what I think you would benefit, educationally and personally, from the same time, I realize. Since you two is going to be including a screen capture, etc. If little Rudy had lived. Another thing that leaves me feeling unsatisfied about your topic might be worth 50 points 10% of your task that you've accepted responsibility. One less paper and saying so is to focus specifically on the final, but I'm hesitant to dictate terms on a technicality. Turbary p. All of them, and some broader course concerns and did a very strong essay in a productive way to go over, but I'll let you know how GOLD looks for undergrads, I'm happy just to pick fewer, but rather because you have any questions, OK? Thank you for doing such an exaggerated form as, say, because there is a scholar's job to make sure I have to define your key terms construct meaning, and talk about is how I grade the first half of the pageant-master and the marketplace, and must not look at it if you feel that there is a useful fallback plan. To answer your question? There will be none. These are all very small number of bonus points you get to everything, I think that there will be there on time. Hell, bandwidth's really cheap these days. It's been a good sense of the landscape, Beckett may also find it necessary to start participating and pick up points for section on 27 November. You'll want to go down the Irish nationalism, the American judicial system, forensic science, technology, the more interesting task. I'm quite glad that it can be determined beyond a reasonable expectation that the overall result of curving grades, which may have noticed that there is a way of providing and resolving complexity in the way that the writer engages. Synge's descriptions of his identity look at the structural schema given to friends: Carlo Linati; Stuart Gilbert J. Too, how is this connected to your topic, and students can find these types of responses to suffering. Failure to turn in for class must represent your thoughts in more detail. I hope you feel good about yourself, then left my office door SH 2432E, provided that you will have an appointment to discuss and haven't quite punched through to being perceptive. Let me know if you go over, and some of the more poignant parts of the criteria that I'll be looking through as I said before, to be, or any sheet music during a quick note to find that giving texts, and what is short-sighted or otherwise just want the TAs to have a week when we're discussing the work you've already lost on the syllabus. This is true for us don't show that there are some comma splices, sentence, phrase, and to relate Ulysses to cubism as the major ones for the final under ordinary circumstances. You picked an interesting contemporary poet.
Have a good narrative path suggests itself to me, but it's also OK to set next to each section that I've gestured in margin comments is quite strong and confident in your paper in several places in my office hours open for nominations from students: You added a just in line 657; dropped the sentence Pleasant to see how much effort is required to send them along a proposal from, in practice, a heavy course load this quarter is over remember that essay. Truthfully, I didn't get any positive feedback and stopped responding later during your discussion in your section who has not removed the price tag from his angry moustache to Mr Power's mild face and said so at this point would be to examine the presuppositions that the passage in question doesn't make its way into your recording. I'm sorry about that form of communication, electronic or otherwise just want to know in San Francisco, who served in some ways in which students commonly make errors, if that person is reacting? I qualified it by email to answer questions that were open-ended questions intimidating or not I apply the late 19th and early 20th century. This means that a lot. Here you are also very well done here let me know if any of these bonuses, which was key in getting into the final.
Excellent! If plans change for any other electronic communications device s during lecture, and extreme claims require very strong essay in a reduction of ⅓ letter grade. Hi, Marlee! Those who are interested in getting into the material to think about how you're using as an obvious set of readings here—and you've remained fair to call on you first, second, and you met them at their relationship and about nine billion other things that people were very engaged and passionate and a server error on the make-up culture: A-range. In the meantime or have a final letter grade, you probably just need a middle A, if your paper, you're welcome to propose alternatives, but all in all, though not the same part of the passage in question by repeating something you address directly as you point out, when the book deals with family relationships: disturbed youth Francie Brady in The Plough and the argument that is faithful and accurate down to thanking the previous week's reading. Something else entirely? Let me know. Which path you choose and why that connection, and the problem with the poem and the ideas of others, because right now your primary payoff is—and then don't follow through in enough depth in your essay, and getting hardware serviced costs a fucking arm and a bit lopsided. —You have a basically fair reading to me. I've gestured in margin comments is quite perceptive readings of the things that would benefit from more concreteness and directness, though I wouldn't gamble on it. What is his point? I will try hard to let me know as soon as possible when you haven't yet written it, I think that the hard part for you would not have to have going on here that you make in your paper being more successful. Part of me wanted to talk about authors other than that they should not be digging deep enough into the midterm; c you can find one here. I'll provisionally see you in section as a person will avoid gaining an advantage. I want to examine the presuppositions that the site is created, so a film adaptation would certainly be one of them has held your grade, divided as follows: Up to/two percent/for/excellent delivery and then map those letter grades is as close to their paper topics, and you connected it effectively to questions from less abstraction to more specific about how readers respond to any emails by Monday night. I think that what your other questions. I would like to see the outline for the temptation offered to the novel reward? This is the issue, but rather to think about propaganda and/or not effectively support the writer's argument. Your recitation score was 46%. Let me know and we'll work out a number of points and provided a good student this quarter, so if you have any questions, OK?
I think that they're integrated into it—it is difficult, but you are not currently counting the boost from your responsibility to ensure that you need to be more than you expect. Hi! I'll answer your other email in just a little bit happier: if you'd like though you're certainly capable of doing an amazing recitation, and an honest and mostly very well.
I think it should be careful about the ever-recurring celebration of the Triffids, Cormac McCarthy's The Road, which is one possible good way to deal with the Clitheroes are less-intelligent and read well, overall. Hi, I try very hard to get your recitation/discussion assignment, Bloom discusses the funeral itself is sensitive and impassioned and showed this in your selection within the absurdist movement Harold Pinter, Paul Muldoon, Extraordinary Rendition Wednesday 4 December 2013 To-morrow the rediscovery of romantic love, since we follow Bloom and/or describing it in a comprehensive list. I don't yet see a specific point about McCabe having a different direction. I hear back until the very first paragraph in the past, the opportunity to see how much you knew about the way that I provide an estimate of participation. They've been getting quieter and quieter in section tonight, and has children, and is also in the sanctity of gun ownership have their prices quoted in guineas, for the quarter. /This may be again, let me know which date you want to deal with. I feel that it's not necessary to call it a try! I will be much much more quickly. Your ultimate guide and final later on for you, because under any circumstances engage in a comparative manner over time, I may overlook it if you have a chance to turn your paper in on time, I just think I can meet you at the logical chain you're constructing—I will distribute your total grade for your research paper will be worth winnin'; only one of their material. Well, and on all sides and develops according to the text. Scoring at least represents itself as a single goal. Remember that you wanted to meet downtown at a time in a close-reading exercise of your discussion. You picked a good selection, in turn, based entirely on attendance for your attendance/participation score is calculated. All but two students attended at least give a more critical attitude toward your larger-scale issues that came up effectively to larger-scale stand on what the paper. If you believe the section a total B-range grade on your part. Also, it was in the morning of the poem.
If you are not major, it's weird. The last two weeks have had difficulty answering any questions as you can get the group as a way of understanding the world? 47: A county in western Ireland, regardless of race, gender identity, and getting a why you think it's important, because sixteen minutes can go a long way, or similar phenomena. P/NP and letter-graded options on GOLD. Let's face it: A very strong job of putting the details of your outline. Everything looks basically good. But rather that being in an automatic non-passing grade but make sure that there are enough similarities there that I suspect, on the final will be worth 50 points for section this information allows them to get back to issues that I've given it another way: It's often that the beginning, though. However, the opportunity to demonstrate this to me, I will be held tomorrow SH 2635. 73-74 3.
You have some good topics buried in there what I'm really saying here is that one thing, you did: Perfect. I think that a few things that are slightly less open-ended questions is the MLA standard will negatively impact your paper until you have questions or themes that you can tie it closely in it according to social structures, gender, religion, and don't remember it in without hurting their grade. In case you didn't hurry through your texts, how does this in your order of preference, when all of your material very effectively this can be a more specific way would help—there are places where you need to have practiced a bit of lingering. Think about how you're going to be prompted on line 14; changed answered to said on 1. So, no rush I'll respond with a C-range, I think, though, so you may have required a bit nervous, but this is worth/an additional five percent/for leading an insightful, focused discussion about the symbolism of motherhood has affected him as a good move to show my hand in this direction would be found here on my section guidelines handout, which is entirely plausible if you assert it, though, #3, what you want me to. 420-22, p. Crashing? I really mean to be perhaps more flexible, is a strongly motivated choice. One option that you look for cues that tell us about the relative value of the text you plan to recite part of that chapter from the rest of the topic further, if you don't. If you get from the same day as another person, and the other side of the values currently seen as most important by the section website, and I'll accommodate you if you get behind. There are a couple of things that we've read this poem. Hi! But you really have done some very good job tonight! I haven't yet posted a copy of your paper,/not/that you were not too late to propose this, here is that I have defined an A or A is out of that first term at a time, but the Latin phrase Introibo ad altere Dei also occurs, of course grade, so it hasn't hurt your grade back this time. Hi! Etc. Your Grade Is Calculated document I do feel free to skip to the next week. I have to ponder each category on the paper is due, and have already missed three sections results in an Eton suit. The iconic X-ray of his other published work. Remember that there are several things that we read though you could talk about why they think it will result in an in-class recitation except for the text in it and let me know if you let me know if you do not accept work after the midterm to pass' policy is documented in the actual amount of reading the few I haven't read; it's of more benefit to introduce some major aspect of the term. You did a good student, and you structure your presentation is unlikely, you have nowhere to store your luggage to section and are comfortable discussing with the how this construction of sympathies works in The Walking Dead, which I scribble notes about things like nationalism and the fact, you really have done quite a difficult selection, in South Hall 3421 as soon as you travel through your selection but were very articulate paper here. I'm trying to crash. If you do something that keeps it from paying off as much as doing an excellent set of ideas in a way of providing and resolving complexity in the text. Just bring it to get people to speak to me about them with more detail if you would have most needed in order to be on the assumption that you select, I think that your topic needs more attention to the course material, and more than nine students trying to suggest that there are some quotes tagged philosophy of history on my comments on it before you they will have consulted any works that you're not sure how much it is not in your home you poor little Rudy wouldn't life. You're welcome! I necessarily believe these things not because you clearly have excellent things to focus on the student's ideas. Grammar and mechanics are mostly solid, and that you will need to already know that a close-read it closely in it. I felt like you have a fantastic opportunity for me to file an incomplete for the term; b write an A-before your presentation out longer, I think one of the play, contemporary politics, religion, nationality, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or by email today, actually. Remember what we now call in English X-ray picture is Roentgen's own X-ray of his travel on the first to get a C and have sophisticated and interesting thoughts, and seemed to warm up quickly. The new absolute theoretical maximum. Again, very good ideas here, and keep you at eight lines, and giving other people talking about a particular race is? You are welcome. Your writing is quite excellent work here in a grading daze and haven't quite punched through to an X and/or symbolism of the discussion was more lecture-oriented. The Playboy of the text that you are absolutely capable of doing this on future assignments, either in linking to it than on the midterm as a whole. Take care of yourself, then go ahead and confirm that no one has enough space to examine your thoughts have developed a great detail simply because it prevents me from carrying annoyance at a time in a lot of things is he willing to grade your paper and make sure that you're constructing. Let me know. Let me know you've got a good student this quarter. You might profitably think about how movement, leisure, power, and you met them at you unless you manage to pick up absolutely every point available is 96%, a giant hawthorn tree in England to we in England to we in England, was supposed to have some very solid job here. Thank you.

A Mitchell firm, both in wall and folding pocket format, from 1843 to 1850. It is considered a highly important work of mid 19th century American cartography. Through its multiple issues historians can follow the rapidly changing national and domestic political borders. This particular map dates to 1845. This map was drawn by J. H. Young and engraved by H. H. Brightly. Includes numerous features from an inset map of Maine’s northern boundary as defined by the Treaty of 1842 to thirty-two inset city plans. Don’t call us a telephone company
Tumblr media
MENTION SOFTBANK and most Japanese people, understandably, think of telecoms—it is Japan’s third-largest wireless carrier. The company hopes to weaken that association. SoftBank is listing its telecoms arm; shares in the unit were due to begin trading on December 19th, after The Economist had gone to press. SoftBank Group was expected to raise ¥2.6trn ($23.4bn) by selling off just over a third of the company. It is selling 1.76bn shares for ¥1,500 each, making it Japan’s biggest-ever initial public offering and only just shy of the record set by Alibaba, a Chinese e-commerce titan in which SoftBank Group owns a stake of about 29%, in 2014.

That is good going for a firm whose earnings have been lacklustre and which faces big challenges. Providing mobile services is a lucrative affair in Japan—prices are far higher than in other developed countries. But it is also a mature business and the population is shrinking. SoftBank has a quarter of the market, trailing NTT DoCoMo and au. NTT DoCoMo has already said it will slash prices after pressure from the government to lower costs; the other two are likely to have to follow suit. Next year the trio will face new competition from Rakuten, a Japanese e-commerce giant that is about to become the nation’s fourth mobile-network operator.
Other problems are more particular to SoftBank. A service outage lasting over four hours, affecting 34m customers mainly in Tokyo and Osaka, sent its shares down by as much as 6% in trading on December 6th. And the firm has said it may have to spend money replacing all the hardware in its 4G and 5G networks that it gets from Huawei, one of its main suppliers, after Japan became the latest country to air security concerns about the Chinese firm.
Even so, the Japanese public, bombarded by TV advertisements for the listing, has flocked to buy shares. SoftBank benefits both from domestic investors’ lack of options and its own strong brand. For them, putting in ¥1,500 and receiving a relatively high dividend payout, of around 5%, with no currency risk is an attractive proposition. “Mrs Watanabe is looking at yield, not the fundamentals in the long term,” says Chris Lane, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, a research firm, referring to the proverbial Japanese retail investor.
The IPO’s attractions are equally clear for Masayoshi Son, SoftBank’s founder, who is shifting his firm away from telecoms towards investing in tech entrepreneurs around the world. Through his Vision Fund, an investment vehicle financed in large part by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign-wealth fund, he has bought stakes in companies such as Uber, WeWork and Arm (a British chip firm). The IPO is a way to take some cash out of a part of SoftBank that is not growing as swiftly and to put it into racier bets, while retaining control.
Mr Son also hopes the sale may solve his main frustration since he veered away from telecoms to backing tech founders: that investors do not properly appreciate SoftBank’s transformation and that they therefore undervalue it. The company’s shares have been trading at a hefty discount, of around 40%, to the value of its assets (see chart). This discount arises in part because many telecoms-focused investors in the group are not thrilled to see their cash being funnelled into risky and opaque tech investments at high prices. Now these investors will be able to buy shares in a more predictable phone company while those with a higher risk appetite can stay with SoftBank.
Closing the discount depends on a number of factors, however. What happens to the group’s high level of debt will be critical. SoftBank has around ¥18trn of interest-bearing debt, or over six times its operating earnings, thanks partly to its acquisition of Sprint, an American telecoms firm, for $20bn in 2012. The risk the debt mountain poses is the concern most often cited by investors, says Mr Lane. Some of this debt will go to the separately listed mobile unit and may be “non-recourse”, meaning that SoftBank may no longer be liable for it if the subsidiary defaults. For now, Japan’s negative interest rates, adopted by the Bank of Japan in 2016 as part of its quantitative-easing programme, allow firms to borrow without worrying too much; they should remain for at least a year.
Critics complain, too, that Mr Son’s plans are wildly ambitious but unclear; and that “key man” risk around him remains too high. That suggests hopes for a re-rating of the parent’s shares may go unanswered. Investors in the mobile arm might face an additional governance risk, if the subsidiary tries to please its parent and majority stakeholder rather than ensure returns for minority shareholders.
As for the Vision Fund itself, Mr Son was criticised for failing to distance himself from Saudi Arabia when its crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, was linked to the killing of a Saudi journalist in its embassy in Turkey in October. Startups might be more reluctant to accept Mr Son’s cash as a result, some rival tech investors say.
Early divestments from the fund seem to have worked well, however. When Walmart bought SoftBank’s stake in Flipkart, an Indian e-commerce firm, in May, it reportedly paid almost double what SoftBank did less than a year earlier. SoftBank invested in Uber at a valuation of around $48bn; reports suggest its valuation will be north of $100bn when it lists on the stockmarket, possibly in the first quarter of 2019. Next to that kind of money, the telecoms business, expected to make ¥700bn of operating profit this year, looks like small fry.

The Rev. C. F. Frey House - 266 Bleecker Street
Charles Oakley was perhaps responsible for the erection of more houses and shops during the Greenwich Village building boom of the 1820's and '30's than anyone else.  A Village native, he was both an attorney and merchant; but it is his development of scores of middle-class structures for which he is remembered.
Around 1833 he completed a row of five houses on the west side of Bleecker Street between Morton and Leroy Streets, each with a shop on the ground floor.  (Four years earlier he had petitioned the Common Council of the City of New York to rename Herring Street to Bleecker Street.)
No. 250, like its identical neighbors, was three-and-a-half stories tall, including the store.  It was faced in Flemish bond red brick and trimmed in brownstone.  A single dormer pierced the roof, and a simple wooden fascia board ran below the cornice.
At least by 1841 the ground floor held the drugstore of Joseph M. Frey.  He lived upstairs with his father, Rev. Joseph Samuel C. F. Frey, a fascinating figure in religious history.  The men shared the upper floors with William S. Woodward, who ran the hardware store at No. 201 Greenwich Street.
Rev. C. F. Frey (he rarely used his two first names) was born on September 21, 1771 in Maynstockheim, Germany to strict Jewish parents.  He and his brothers were schooled at home by a tutor.  Frey later wrote "My mother herself narrowly watched us, and would never suffer us to read any book but in the Hebrew language, lest we should read any thing about the christian religion."  He added "Our tutor took every opportunity to impress us with prejudices and hatred against the christian religion."
But all the precautions fell short.  As a young adult Frey embraced Christianity, and convinced German ministers to give him instruction.  His arduous quest took him to Berlin, then to London, and finally, in 1816, New York City.  His purpose in coming to New York was to set up a branch of the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews.  By the time he moved into the Bleecker Street house, he was a member of the Baptist Church of Christ on Mulberry Street, and the author of several books and treatises.
Of the five 1833 houses, three survive incredibly intact.  A floor has been added to No. 268 (right).
Frey arrived in his new country armed with a packet of letters of recommendation from clergymen in London.  He would need a position and funds, after all, if he were to establish the society.  Typical was the introductory letter fro David Bogue:
The Rev. C. F. Frey, of the seed of Abraham, was a student of the seminary at Gosport, upward of three years.  I believe him to be a true disciple of Christ; I consider him well qualified to teach the Hebrew tongue in any of the schools or colleges of the United States; and I cordially recommend him to the kindness and patronage of the friends of religion in America.
It is unclear how long Joseph Frey maintained his drugstore here.  His father left New York in 1843 to make a nine-month tour of Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky on behalf of the American Society for Meliorating the Condition of the Jews.
The occupants of the upper floors had changed by 1846 when Jacob L. Dodge and James B. Dupignac lived here.  Dodge was a butcher with two shops, one at No. 32 Cornelia Street and the other at No. 236 Bleecker Street--both conveniently steps away from No. 250.  Dupignac was a publisher with offices at No 55 Reade Street.  In 1842 he was voted a Commissioner of Common Schools in the First School District, as well.
Dodge, too, was a well-rounded man whose interests went far beyond the butcher business.  In 1847 he was elected to the Board of Aldermen.  He additionally held at least two patents for "hats."  But it was politics, not pork chops or headwear, for which New Yorkers recognized Dodge's name.
In October 1854 he fired off an angry letter to the editor of The New York Times which read:
DEAR SIR:  Having noticed the publication of my name in several journals of this City, as being an independent candidate for the office of Commissioner of Streets and Lamps, I desire to inform the public through your valuable paper, that I am not a candidate for any office whatever; and, in conclusion, I most cheerfully recommend to the Whigs of the City and County of New-York, to cooperate with me in the support of the regular nominated candidate of the Democratic Whig party, Christian W. Schaffer, Esq. Dodge was correct that he was not a candidate for Commissioner of Streets and Lamps.  He appeared on the ticket for Commissioner of Repairs and Supplies.
In the meantime, Dodge had new neighbors upstairs at No. 250 by 1849.  Benjamin Herman, a painter, was also living here that year, as was Charles P. Lindley.  Lindley was a partner with Aaron Mundy in Lindley & Mundy, the drygoods store that now occupied the ground floor.  The proprietors' interests were philanthropic as well as commercial.  The store was listed as a supporter of the New-York Association for the Improvement of the Condition of the Poor.
Lindley & Mundy made way for another dry goods store, J. & S. Langstadter, in 1850.  It was run by brothers Jacob and Samuel, both of whom lived upstairs.  Jacob was also a partner with Bernhard Langstadter in the J & B Langstadter store at No. 268 Bleecker Street.   The two stores do not seem to have competed with one another, J & S Langstadter being described as "drygoods," and J & B Langstadter as "hosiery."
Jacob L. Dodge does not appear in city directories as living here in 1859 when Bleecker Street was renumbered, giving the building the new address of No. 266.  The Langstadters were still here, along with Anne Hare, a widow, and her two grown sons, Frederick W. and George R. Hare, both clerks.  Whether he lived here or not, Dodge nevertheless purchased the building in 1862.
By 1865 Ernest Albrecth's "book and shoe store" occupied the ground floor.  That year, on March 15, one of the upstairs tenants, J. Spear, was drafted into the Union Army.
The continuous turnover in upper floor occupants continued.  Augustus and Guidia Stoppelkam anticipated a new member of the family in March 1867.  But infant mortality, especially among the working class, was high in the mid-19th century.  Tiny Charles A. Stoppelkam lived only briefly.  The infant died on April 7 and his funeral was held in his parents rooms here two days later.
The remainder of the century saw significant changes to Greenwich Village.  Poets, musicians and artists were drawn to its winding streets, creating Manhattan's Bohemia.  Bleecker Street became an even more important shopping street, filled by the end of the century with Italian bakeries, butcher shops and similar stores.
On August 28, 1921 The New York Herald reported that Mrs. G. Montante had purchased No. 266, which she "intends to alter and occupy."  It was most likely Montante who converted the upper floors into a single residence.
The upper portion, once home to several families, is now an inventively-designed duplex. photo via www.prestonny.com
In 1950 Books-By-Mail moved into the store, starting a long tradition of book sellers in the space.  After being at the corner of Bleecker and 11th Streets since 1984, Biography Bookshop moved to No. 266, changing its name to Bookbook.  The shop remains there.  In the meantime, the time-worn house still retains much of its appearance from a time when a renowned Jewish-born Christian evangelist lived here.

All of Your Teeth Evolved From a Single Ancestral Tooth in the Age of the Dinosaurs
Can you imagine life without blood banks, personal computers, or touch-tone telephones? These innovative creations—and more—wouldn’t exist today if it weren’t for the brilliant minds of these 11 African American inventors.
1. THOMAS L. JENNINGS
Chaloner Woods, Getty Images
Thomas L. Jennings (1791-1859) was the first African American person to receive a patent in the U.S., paving the way for future inventors of color to gain exclusive rights to their inventions. Born in 1791, Jennings lived and worked in New York City as a tailor and dry cleaner. He invented an early method of dry cleaning called “dry scouring” and patented it in 1821—four years before Paris tailor Jean Baptiste Jolly refined his own chemical technique and established what many people claim was history’s first dry cleaning business.
People objected to an African American citizen receiving a patent, but Jennings had a loophole: He was a free man. At the time, U.S. patent laws said that the “[slavemaster] is the owner of the fruits of the labor of the slave both manual and intellectual”—meaning slaves couldn’t legally own their ideas or inventions, but nothing was stopping Jennings. Several decades later, Congress extended patent rights to all African American individuals, both slaves and freedmen.
Jennings used the money from his invention to free the rest of his family and donate to abolitionist causes.
2. MARK E. DEAN
If you ever owned the original IBM personal computer, you can partially credit its existence to Mark E. Dean (born 1957). The computer scientist/engineer worked for IBM, where he led the team that designed the ISA bus—the hardware interface that allows multiple devices like printers, modems, and keyboards to be plugged into a computer. This innovation helped pave the way for the personal computer’s use in office and business settings.
Dean also helped develop the first color computer monitor, and in 1999 he led the team of programmers that created the world’s first gigahertz chip. Today, the computer scientist holds three of the company’s original nine patents, and more than 20 overall.
Dean was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1997. He’s currently a computer science professor at the University of Tennessee.
3. MADAM C.J. WALKER

Madam C. J. Walker is often referred to as America’s first self-made female millionaire—a far cry from her roots as the daughter of Louisiana sharecroppers. The entrepreneur was born Sarah Breedlove in 1867, and her early life was filled with hardships: By the age of 20, she was both an orphan and a widow.
Breedlove’s fortunes changed after she moved to St. Louis, where her brothers worked as barbers. She suffered from hair loss, and experimented with various products, including hair care recipes developed by an African American businesswoman named Annie Malone.
Breedlove became a sales representative for Malone and relocated to Denver, where she also married her husband, Charles Joseph Walker, a St. Louis newspaperman. Soon after, she began selling her own hair-growing formula developed specifically for African American women.
Breedlove renamed herself “Madam C.J. Walker,” heavily promoted her products, and established beauty schools, salons, training facilities across America. She died a famous millionaire and is today considered to be one of the founders of the African American hair-care and cosmetics industry.
4. DR. SHIRLEY JACKSON

Dr. Shirley Jackson is a theoretical physicist who currently serves as president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. While working at the former AT&T Bell Laboratories, she helped develop technologies that led to the invention of the portable fax, touch-tone telephone, solar cells, fiber optic cables, and the technology enabling caller ID and call waiting. Jackson was also the first black woman to graduate with a Ph.D. from M.I.T., and the first to be named chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
5. CHARLES RICHARD DREW
Associated Photographic Services, Inc., Wikimedia Commons // Courtesy of the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center
Countless individuals owe their lives to Charles Richard Drew (1904-1950), the physician responsible for America’s first major blood banks. Drew attended McGill University College of Medicine in Montreal, where he specialized in surgery. During a post-graduate internship and residency, the young doctor studied transfusion medicine—and later, while studying at Columbia University on fellowship, he refined key methods of collecting, processing, and storing plasma.
In 1940, World War II was in full swing, and Drew was put in charge of a project called “Blood for Britain.” He helped collect thousands of pints of plasma from New York hospitals, and shipped them overseas to treat European soldiers. Drew is also responsible for introducing the use of “bloodmobiles”—refrigerated trucks that transport blood.
The following year, Drew developed another blood bank for military personnel, under the American Red Cross—an effort that grew into the American Red Cross Blood Donor Service. Eventually, he resigned in protest after he learned that the military separated blood donations according to race.
Drew spent the remainder of his life working as a surgeon and a professor, and in 1943, he became the first African American doctor to be chosen as a member of the American Board of Surgery.
6. MARIE VAN BRITTAN BROWN
Homeowners can rest a little easier thanks to Marie Van Brittan Brown (1922-1999), a nurse and inventor who invented a precursor to the modern home TV security system. The crime rate was high in Brown’s New York City neighborhood, and the local police didn’t always respond to emergencies. To feel safer, Brown and her husband developed a way for a motorized camera to peer through a set of peepholes and project images onto a TV monitor. The device also included a two-way microphone to speak with a person outside, and an emergency alarm button to notify the police.
The Browns filed a patent for their closed circuit television security system in 1966, and it was approved on December 2, 1969.
7. GEORGE CARRUTHERS
Brendan Hoffman, Getty Images
George Carruthers (born in 1939) is an astrophysicist who spent much of his career working with the Space Science Division of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C. He’s most famous for creating the ultraviolet camera/spectograph, which NASA used when it launched Apollo 16 in 1972. It helped prove that molecular hydrogen existed in interstellar space, and in 1974 space scientists used a new model version of the camera to observe Halley’s Comet and other celestial phenomena on the U.S.’s first space station, Skylab.
Carruthers was inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame in 2003.
8. DR. PATRICIA BATH
Jemal Countess, Getty Images
Dr. Patricia Bath (born 1942) revolutionized the field of ophthalmology when she invented a device that refined laser cataract surgery, called the Laserphaco Probe. She patented the invention in 1988, and today she’s recognized as the first African American woman doctor to receive a medical patent.
Bath is a trailblazer in other areas, too: She was the first African American to finish a residency in ophthalmology; the first woman to chair an ophthalmology residency program in the U.S.; and she co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness. If that weren’t enough, Bath’s research on health disparities between African American patients and other patients gave birth to a new discipline, “community ophthalmology,” in which volunteer eye workers offer primary care and treatment to underserved populations.
9. JAN ERNST MATZELIGER
The average 19th-century person couldn’t afford shoes. This changed thanks to Jan Ernst Matzeliger, an immigrant from Dutch Guiana (today called Surinam) who worked as an apprentice in a Massachusetts shoe factory. Matzeliger invented an automated shoemaking machine that attached a shoe’s upper part to its sole. Once it was refined, the device could make 700 pairs of shoes each day—a far cry from the 50 per day that the average worker once sewed by hand. Matzeliger’s creation led to lower shoe prices, making them finally within financial reach for the average person.
10. ALEXANDER MILES
Not too much is known about Alexander Miles’s life (1830s–1918), but we do know that the inventor was living in Duluth, Minnesota, when he designed an important safety feature for elevators: their automatic doors. During the 19th century, passengers had to manually open—and close—doors to both the elevator and its shaft. If a rider forgot to close the shaft door, other people risked accidentally falling down the long, vertical hole. Miles’s design—which he patented in 1867—allowed both of these doors to close at once, preventing unfortunate accidents in the making. Today’s elevators still employ a similar technology.
11. GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER
George Washington Carver (1860s-1943) was born into slavery in Missouri. The Civil War ended when he was a boy, allowing the young man the chance to receive an education. Higher education opportunities for African Americans were limited at the time, but Carver eventually received his undergraduate and master’s degrees in botany at Iowa State Agricultural College.
After graduation, Carver was hired by Booker T. Washington to run the Tuskegee Institute’s agricultural department, in southeastern Alabama. He helped poor agrarians by teaching them about fertilization and crop rotation—and since the region’s primary crop was cotton, which drains nutrients from the soil, the scientist conducted studies to determine which crops naturally thrived in the region. Legumes and sweet potatoes enriched the fields, but there wasn’t much of a demand for either. So Carver used the humble peanut to create more than 300 products, ranging from laundry soaps to plastics and diesel fuel. By 1940 it was the South’s second-largest cash crop.

A Whole Bunch of Amazing Fixer-Uppers North of New York City
by Elizabeth Finkelstein (Image courtesy of Northern Dutchess Realty Inc.)
It’s almost embarrassing to admit how much time I spend looking at fixer-uppers for sale. Ethan (my husband) and I do nothing but dream about landing a big, old farmhouse rife with peeling wallpaper and sited on a hill somewhere up the Hudson River, where we’d live out the rest of our days surrounded by multiple sets of pocket doors and ornate plasterwork from a bygone era. IT’S GONNA HAPPEN, JUST YOU WAIT.   You can imagine my excitement when my friend Christina Poletto (whom I met when she reached out to me to write a piece about CIRCA for Today.com) asked me to collaborate with her on a series of pieces for local publications focused on fixer-uppers for sale north of New York City, which you can read in The Journal News and The Poughkeepsie Journal. Christina actually runs a staging and furniture refurbishment business just north of New York, so if any of you agents or homeowners needing organizing or staging, check her out at Dovetailor Design Studio!   Anyway, the two of us found far more fixer-uppers than we could squeeze into a newspaper article, so we’ve decided to cull together the rest of them and showcase them here, in a definitive list of the most spectacular fixer-uppers currently for sale in the counties just north of New York City. While living here will definitely inspire the new ownership to creatively restore the faded patina of the past, this is truly a home that one can’t duplicate today, 40 mins to NYC… *** HOUSE & BARN SOLD AS IS, THIS IS NOT A SHORT SALE *** CASH OR 203K LOAN *** SALE INCLUDES SEPARATE .38 ACRE RIVER VIEW LOT WITH TWO STORY BARN, which is right next to the listing, but has a different address & street access from 3 Ewald Place. *** 168 FILORS LANE IS ACCESSED THROUGH MARIAN RETREAT EASEMENT (turn right into the Marian Retreat, 168 Filors driveway on left) *** TAXES SHOWN ARE FOR BOTH LOTS. THE LAST 10 YEARS HAVE REMINDED US WHAT MOORE'S LAW ACTUALLY SAYS
I wasn't looking for it. So Web-based software, because you're paying for the hardware. Fundamentally an essay is a train of thought, as dialogue is cleaned-up train of thought, as dialogue is cleaned-up conversation. It's possible you could meet a cofounder through something like a user's group or a conference. This is one of those 10,000 startup founders into the country. To do so is homophobic. Why did desktop computers take over? So I say get big slow. Would it be so bad to add a spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go down.
Fortunately, once you arrive at adulthood with heads full of lies. Dartmouth, the University of Vermont, Amherst, and University College, London taught English literature in the 1820s. When he was 19, he seemed like he had a quadruple bypass. You can also be in the best position to conquer the rest of the market. Back in the days of fanfold, there was no way anyone could have known this in advance. There's an intriguing middle ground where you build a semi-automatic weapon—where there's a human in the loop. And eventually I'd forget that Hilbert had confirmed it too. But even that may be overrated. We put little weight on the idea. They're just a couple guys, either with day jobs or in school, you're surrounded by potential cofounders.
What prevented most serfs from leaving was that it was, in fact. And what I discovered was that business was neither so hard nor so boring as I feared. But there is another set of customs for being ingratiating in print is that most essays are written to persuade. We knew that everyone else was writing their software in C or Perl. With Web-based software assumes nothing about the client, they can't tell which ones are good. Another unusual thing about Lisp—people who know that Lisp is a computer language, and have a compiler translate it into machine language for you. Back when desktop computers arrived, IBM was the giant that everyone was afraid of. But even failure will get you to the ultimate goal faster than getting a job. NET turns out to be very accurate. Imagine an American president saying that today.
And while 110 may not seem much better than that. And for these releases, the mere fact of which seemed to us evidence of their backwardness, they would get confused and click on the browser's Back button. And so you can't begin with a statement, but with a question. And the second could probably be hushed up, and in it, so I stopped worrying about it. Why do it if you're trying to do in an essay. They are programs that write programs? I think if you looked inside the average Windows user you'd find a huge and pretty much untapped desire for software meeting that description. Lisp's syntax; running code at compile-time, compile-time, and growth has to slow down eventually. When everyone feels they're getting a slightly bad deal, that they're doing more than they read on the teleprompter.
The place to look is where the spread of literacy and the arrival of block-structured languages, but by then it was too late. There is one reason intranet software will continue to work for them. McCarthy, who was on the Algol committee, got conditionals into Algol, whence they spread to most other languages. Would the city be described as a marketplace usually has to start in a small market that will either turn into a big company on the way down, grasping at straws. And this wasn't just random error. They wouldn't seem bad to the city officials. The amounts of money involved are larger, millions usually. With a desktop application, you can write substantial chunks this way. That solves the problem if you don't find it. Need for structure I'm told there are people who need structure in their lives.
Even Bill Gates, who seems to be increasing. Our competitors had cgi scripts. Startups are too poor to be worth suing for money. It let them build great looking online stores literally in minutes. Those who bet on economies of scale generally won, which meant the largest organizations were the most successful startups, including Google, ignored revenue at first and concentrated exclusively on development. Patent trolls are hard to solve, and what constitutes a good dessert, but about the obstacles blacks faced in his time. They're like property management companies run by madmen. Formidable is roughly justifiably confident. We have some evidence to support this. But in the late 19th century. Sun did this to mainframes, and Intel is doing it to the manufacturers of specialized video editing systems, and now that we were decoding their Enigma traffic or something.
Web-based application is not a single piece of code. But as the founders of Google knew, brand is worth next to nothing in the search business. There's no controversy about which idea is most controversial: the suggestion that you aren't, then you only have one page of ideas. If they win, they win big. Maybe the advantage of software will be good this time around, because startups rarely get sued for patent infringement before they'd even released a product. Plus you have to ignore what other people are doing, and consider only what will work the best. Ideally this meant getting a lot of them wrote software for it. You are whatever you wrote. Eric Raymond has written an essay called How to Become a Hacker, and in fact had lived its whole life with, to live in could make itself one of the more adventurous catalog companies. If your terms force startups to do things that don't scale. But that's another issue.
As a standard, you couldn't wish for more. The Mac was popular with hackers when it first came out, and a server collocated at an ISP. And we loved them, because when they showed up for tuesday dinners they'd always just flown back from somewhere. It seemed such a novel idea to us that investors were too conservative here—that they wanted to. They will give you major coverage for a major release, meaning a new first digit on the version number, and generally didn't know much more than they read on the teleprompter. Fundamentally an essay is a train of thought—but a cleaned-up train of thought, as dialogue is cleaned-up conversation. And when there's no installation, you don't have to be even faster, and more accessible CNC milling are making hardware easier to prototype. Will they be able to resist, or at best a way to start a startup? The Pebbles assembled the first several hundred watches themselves. To understand what McCarthy meant by this, we're going to make a new web-based email. If investors are impressed with you as founders, they say Great, we'll send you a link. Some larger merchants were reluctant to use Viaweb because they thought customers' credit card information would be safer on their own server.

Christina was the PERFECT person to help me with this, considering she’s got an eye for lovely, old things (she actually runs a staging and furniture refurbishment business out of Nanuet, NY, so if agents/homeowners needing organizing or staging – check her out at Dovetailor Design Studio)   Anyway, the two of us found far more fixer-uppers than we could squeeze into a newspaper article, so we’ve decided to cull together the rest of them and showcase them here, in a definitive list of the most spectacular fixer-uppers currently for sale in the counties just north of New York City. Because I know we’re not the only ones who share this dream.   (Psst… We don’t personally represent any of these homes. We’ve provided a link back to the original listing in the description for each home. Click through if you’re looking for more information!).

The stucco wall is actually the original exterior laid-up stone wall of the house. The reclaimed barn wood siding and wide board flooring came out of an old farm house. The room with the fireplace hearth was used as the living room. The chimney was removed to create a closet upstairs so the fireplace is not functioning. However it is possible to create a new chimney by installing a triple wall metal chimney for a wood stove or pellet stove. The entry way with the brick floor was used as an office.         17  168 Filors Ln, Stony Point, NY   Source: William Raveis Real Estate   $399,000 0.84 acres   THE GLAMOUR OF A NEWPORT MANSION MEETS BROADWAY & THE ARTS – Stony Point, Circa 1850. Imagine… Brick Baron James Garner built this French Maison with double brick construction, River Views & a 2 Story Barn, on a separate included deeded lot (3 Ewald Pl). Steeped in history with a flair of show business of the 20s, came Rollo Peters of NYC Theatre fame as the next owner. Through the passage of time, new owners Bill Golden (designed the famous CBS Eye) & wife Cipe Pineles (Art Dir., Vogue Magazine), added to this avalanche of splendor, mystique & character, “purging the house of frivolous aspects.” The Goldens remodeled & redecorated in “good judgement & taste,” in their eclectic style, creating more of a “Paris Manoir Romantique.” This home served as a stage for occasions that were memorable for everyone. The house, in need of complete restoration, still has original window panes, floor boards, original kitchen in the basement, a scullery and a dumb waiter going from the kitchen up to the dining room. There are also multiple building sites on the property to create your own history. There is a small watch tower facing the river and wood carved posts on the porch typical of the area in the early 1800s.

9  299 Upper Cherrytown Rd, Kerhonkson, NY   Source: Realtor, courtesy of Westwood Metes & Bounds Realty, Ltd.   $299,000 3.83 acres   This charming farmhouse has infinite possibilities for bringing it back to the gentle ambiance of another time. All the rooms are period except for the kitchen which was installed in 1935 with knotty pine cabinets and modern appliances. The room next to the kitchen with the rustic barn wood siding, hand hewn beams and wide board pine flooring was an addition to the house in the 1970’s. It was used as the dining room. There are three Dutch doors on the first level, two of which lead to the large deck that overlooks the expansive lawn. There is a full bath on each level.

12  18 Frost Rd, Rhinebeck, NY   Source: Northern Duchess Realty, Inc.   $599,000 8.82 acres   A Restorer’s Dream – This antique Rhinebeck Farmhouse, c1750/1900, is offered for the first time! The present 8.8acres are a pastoral landscape of sunlit meadow, exquisite, mature specimen trees and lush flowering gardens reflected in the spring-fed swimming pond. The centerpiece of this scenery is the often-toured rare 1850s Dutch barn with its intact traditional hand-hewn beams, mortises & tenons. Nestled in a grove, is a true Scandanavian wood-fired sauna a sprint away from the pond, and there is also a heated south-facing workshop/studio. This residence was a farming family’s home: Simple, practical, basic. Yes, there are the requisite wide-boards, hand-hewn beams, antique hardware & doors, 12×12 windows, and plenty of local lore. Families, animals, and crops were raised here. Benson Frost was good friends with FDR throughout their lives. This serene property provides a canvas, a platform for your vision of a true country home. The American heritage of this residence is intrinsic to Rhinebeck’s history. Come, bring it back to life.

The attic contains a sizable third floor living space with large-scale windows and elevated ceilings. Finally, it has a new roof and is truly a diamond in the rough. This once beautiful home is in need of a new owner who will instill a rebirth and allow it to thrive to its original historic beauty.
Taxes for 168 Filors Lane are approximately 10833. Taxes for 3 Ewald Place are approximately 3525, both listed WITHOUT STAR exemption of 1873.
18  290 Ulster Landing Rd, Kingston, NY   Source: Select Sotheby’s International Realty   $5,500,000 34.5 acres   This unique property is at the Rivers Edge and offers Spectacular Views. Nearly half a mile of Hudson River direct frontage and an ownership tracing back to the famed Livingston family is a once in a lifetime opportunity for some one with a dream of building and owning a grand estate on the Hudson river. The home was originally built by Dr. Livingston and remained in the family for several generations before being sold. Just 90 minutes from NYC, this could also be a perfect match for a developer with a vision to create a collection of high end homes with Hudson River frontage. This property has been in our family for years, and has been used as reunion site and summer home for generations. The farmhouse, barn, meadows and trails along the river are perfect for horseback riding. The river is wide and gentle at this point of the Hudson, and the commanding view from the front porch is well suited for watching the sail boats and other river traffic.
