An up close photo of Volo’s Rolfe, dressed for Christmas in July! His fur is very soft and it feels and looks very similar to the owl 1998 furby! Seeing him(and Earl) up close has made me love him more :)

Furby is an American electronic robotic toy by Tiger Electronics. Originally released in 1998, it resembles a hamster or owl-like creature and went through a period of being a "must-have" toy following its holiday season launch. Over 40 million Furbies were sold during the three years of its original production, with 1.8 million sold in 1998, and 14 million in 1999. Its speaking capabilities were translated into 14 languages.

So how do I remove Furby ear bones anyway?

Did your Furby’s original ears break? Did you make a custom skin and need the ears to be a different shape? Who knows! I’m just here to tell you how to take the old ones off. This will be a little shorter than my usual guides, since the process is quite simple.

To start, let’s take a quick look at how the covers vary depending on where and when your Furby was made.

On the left is a 1999 Furby baby with a red plastic cover. Even though there are three screws on the cover, only the bottom two will need to be removed. On the right is an adult 1998 Furby with a black plastic cover. This is a little hard to photograph clearly, so for the rest of this guide I’ll be using a GE Owl who has a red plastic cover.

You may also notice some variety in the ear bones themselves! Some bones have little pegs that ride in a slot on the ear cover. These keep the ears from overextending while your Furby is shucked, but aren’t really an essential part of the mechanism. Some Furbies have pegs and slots, some have just slots, and some have no slots or pegs. There’s nothing wrong with mixing and matching types if you're using donor parts, but peg ear bones won’t fit in a Furby without slots, so you’ll have to modify them.

To remove the ears, all you need to do is remove the two screws attaching the cover to the base behind Furby’s eyes (circled above)

You can also see that the bundle of wires connected to the light and IR sensors is covering the corner on this Furby. It should be relatively easy to push out of the way.

Removing the cover. At this point the cam is loose and might become a little unwieldy. Be careful not to break any of the teeth on the gears.

The ear bones should come off with a little force once the cover is out of the way. Sometimes the gear will come off with them, but it shouldn’t be difficult to separate the two and stick the gear back where it goes.

You may notice that Furby’s original ears have a rubbery surface in contact with the gears that drive them, and that the ears can rotate without moving the gears. This is part of the slip mechanism that keeps the gears and motor safe if the ears get grabbed, jammed, or otherwise stuck!

What was your first furby? if you could remember it

My first furby was a tan/white furby 2005. I believe I was four years old. I loved him so very much. Idk what happened to him. We found him at a goodwill and I was immediately obsessed. I was into super into Jim Henson everything so the puppet like appearance of furbies didn’t bother me at all.

My next furby after that was when I was 7 or 8 years old was a 1998/1999 furby owl. We found him at a flea market and my dad was trying to haggle with the guy and me crying over finding this furby didn’t help at all. Lmao.

They were both lost during a move. I didn’t get another furby until I was 21 when a friend gifted me a furby boom. Then later at a nerd con I found a booth selling vintage toys and they just so happened to have a black and white furby 1998.

Now I’ve rescued a multitude of furbs from the internet and resale shops I frequent. I’m still just as excited about them as I was when I was 4…

my favourite sharks are black tipped reef sharks, my favourite frogs are glass frogs, my favourite moths are cecropia moths and my favourite cat is uhhh Cat. a all pigeons are perfect.

I love Furbies and my favourite cryptid is mothman, but Nessie is a very close second.

my favourite video game is stardew valley but I’m also a big fan of hollow knight! So far I’ve spent 40ish hours playing the game and 23 of those were spent defeating the false knight

I’m not sure what my favourite book is, I have a lot, but Annie on my mind is definitely a comfort one, the spirit bares its teeth is one of the greatest things i've ever read, and i love the entire miss peregrines home for peculiar children series! (i even blog about it sometimes)

right now i'm super into the paper girls comics, and i'm watching the show!!! the comics are where my pfp and header r from :33

I like art, even though I’m bad at it, and I have limited knowledge on playing the keyboard. i only know a couple songs, but like i'm apart of the school band (although that may be very different than what u think it is depending on where you live)

my favourite colour is pink, but I’m also a big fan of lavender

my least favourite colour is orange, but green has been testing my patience as of late

my favourite dinosaurs are parasaurolophus' and ankylosaurus'!!

my favourite tv show is probably The Owl House but I can’t be sure. I’ve been trying to find more good animated ones but haven’t had much luck

my favourite movie is i saw the TV glow, and my favourite song changes from day to day but rn i reallyyyyy love Sailor Song by gigi perez and anything by Daïtro

my favourite mushrooms are shaggy inky caps and when I saw them for the very first time in person I nearly cried

my favourite holiday is Halloween, even though we don’t celebrate it here in aus

i've been getting into dc pretty recently, especially the batfam! my top three favourite robins are steph damian and tim!!!
