9. fairy kei
fairy kei is a whimsical and pastel infused fashion style that emerged from Japan's harajuku district, blending elements of 1980s pop culture, fantasy, and a distinctly "kawaii" aesthetic. here is my breakdown of fairy kei!!!!!!!!
origins and development
harajuku influence: fairy kei originated in the early 2000s in Tokyo's harajuku district, a hub for avant grade and youth fashion. the style was heavily influenced by the nostalgia for 1980s and early 1990s pop culture, particularly American cartoons, toys, and fashion trends from that era.
fairy tale and fantasy elements: the term fairy kei loosely translates to "fairy style" reflecting its ethereal and magical inspiration. the style blends fantasy with a playful, childlike innocence, often drawing inspiration from fairy tales, magical girls, and pastel colored things!
iconic brands: brands like spank!, 6%DOKIDOKI, and Nile perch were instrumental in popularizing fairy kei. these stores sold vintage 80s items, as well as their own creations that embodied the pastel, cute, retro vibe of the style
key motifs
pastel color palette: the defining characteristic of fairy kei is its pastel color scheme. soft pinks, baby blue, lavender, mint green, and pale yellow dominate the aesthetic. outfits often consist of multiple pastel shades, creatings a dreamy, candy like appearance.
1980s and 1990s pop culture: fairy kei fashion heavily references 80s 90s pop culture, including cartoons like My Little Pony, care Bears, Rainbow Brite, and Strawberry Shortcake these motifs appear on clothing, accessories, and even as plush toys carried as part of the outfit.
layering and tutu skirts: layering is a common practice in fairy kei. tutu skirts, often made of tulle or similar materials, are paired with oversized sweaters, graphic t-shirts, or pastel jackets. the overall look is voluminous and soft.
cute and playful accessories: accessories are a vital part of fairy kei. bows, star and moon motifs, hearts, and other playful, childlike elements are incorporated into the outfit. hair accessories like large bows, ribbons, and headbands are essential, as are colorful socks, tights, and legwarmers
diy and handmade items: many fairy kei enthusiasts incorporates diy elements into their outfits. customizing clothing with patches, glitter, or handmade jewelry adds a personal touch and enhances the unique, whimical feel of the style.
soft and natural makeup: makeup in fairy kei is generally soft and subtle, designed to enhance the natural, youthful appearance. pale pink, light lipstick, and pastel eyeshadow are common, along with the occasional use of stickers or face gems for a more magical look.
simple pastel hair: hair is often dyed in pastel colors to match the outfit, such as lavender, pink, or baby blue. simple styles like pigtails, braids, or loose curls are preferred, often adorn with bows or cute hair clips.
music
the music associated with fairy kei often aligns with its cute and nostalgic aesthetic. jpop, particularly songs with a playful and bubbly vibe, fits well. artists like kyary pamyu pamyu, who embodies a colorful and whimsical style, resonate with fairy kei enthusiasts. 1980s pop music, especially upbeat and fun tracks, also influences the style, reflecting the era that inspired much of fairy kei fashion. here are some artists I recommend
kyary pamyu pamyu
perfume
capsule
dempagumi.inc
poppy
shoko nakagawa
tommy february 6
macross 82-99
neko hacker
sweetune
movies
movies that emphasize fantasy, magic, and nostalgia are key inspirations for fairy kei. films like labyrinth, the neverending story, and animated classics such as my little pony or rainbow Brite and the star stealer, capture the essence of the aesthetic. anime and films that feature magical girls or fantasy elements, like sailor moon or studio ghiblis my neighbor totoro, align well with the fairy kei vibe. here are movies I suggest.
the secret world of arrietty (2010)
my neighbor totoro (1988)
kikis delivery service (1989)
ponyo (2008)
the cat returns (2002)
little Nemo: adventures in slumberland (1989)
cardcaptor Sakura: the movie (1999)
sailor moon r: the movie (1993)
a little princess (1995)
puella magi Madonna magica: the movie (2012)
books and other medias
manga and anime: magical girl anime like sailor moon, cardcaptor Sakura, and pretty cure are beloved in the fiary kei community. these shows feature pastel colors, magical themes, strong, cute heroines that embody the aesthetic.
fashion magazine: Japanese magazines such a as KERA and zipper often feature fairy kei fashion, providing styling tips, DIY tutorials and showcasing the latest trends within the community.
social media and online communities: platforms like Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest are vital for the fairy kei enthusiasts to share outfit inspiration, DIY projects, and connect with others in the community. social media has played a significant role in spreading the fairy kei aesthetic globally.
inspo
overall, fairy kei is a soft, pastel, and nostalgic fashion style that blends elements of 1980s pop culture with a dreamy, childlike fantasy. it is defined by its use of pastel colors, playful accessories, and references to vintage cartoons and toys. the style us a celebration of whimsy, imagination, and a return to the innocent joys of childhood, making it both visually distinctive and emotionally resonant for those who embrace it.

zombies who died in different eras n still dress in the fashions of the time 😳 (inspired by jakks pacific's 2013 zombie girls line! some are redesigns some r original ^-^)
in order!
1950′s: Red Scarry was beheaded after being suspected of being a communist during the red scare. Now wears a green ribbon around her neck to keep her head from falling off. The nerd and conspiracist of the group. Her favorite color is green, and she is a bookworm at heart (she even has a bookworm in her actual heart!).
1960′s: Dawn Tumble met her untimely end after falling during a cheer competition. Although her broken bones sometimes inconvenience her, she enjoys eeking others out with her extra dexterity. The romantic and prep of the group. Her favorite color is red, and she hates having her name called last name first.
1970′s: Monty Everett got cold feet while skiing down a mountain and froze in place. While his frostbitten face and fingertips make him look cold, he actually has a very warm heart. The shy one of the group. His favorite color is blue, and he really doesn’t understand why discothèques went out of style.
1980′s: Rhoda Kill learned the hard way about the dangers of being distracted near drivers, accidentally dancing in the streets at just the worst time. Luckily she thinks the tire tread across her outfit and skin adds flair to her new wave fit. The bubbly and excitable one of the group. Her favorite color is purple, and her favorite hobby is choreographing new routines to old songs.
1990′s: Asher K.A. Tack had a gnarly wipeout when a tiger shark decided to make a snack out of her, and right when she was about to land first place at Mavericks. She doesn’t let her bites slow her down though, even if it bites. The sporty and chill one of the group. Her favorite color is yellow, and when she’s not on the waves she likes to dress in comfortable layers while playing her gameboy.
2000′s: Chell Venom got bit by a computer bug- specifically a brown recluse that was hiding in the cd drive in her clear pink computer tower. Tries to hide the veining all over her from the bite with strawberry-scented roll on body glitter. The posh and prissy one of the group. Her favorite color is pink, and she’s never left the house without spare lip gloss.
2010′s: Roxy Hart died after rocking out too hard- specifically, the music she was blasting at the side of the road caused a landslide. Although parts of her are flattened, she’s still totally deep and tortured on the inside. The emo and artistic one of the group. Their favorite color is black, and no, you can’t look in their sketchbook, it’s not finished yet.

Arcana Craves Daydream Collection Review
It’s been a horrible, strange year so far in so many ways, and Julia of Arcana has been quietly working on a beautiful Craves collection to soothe our aching souls. Julia writes that her new Craves Daydream collection “is about some of the experiences and places we've been longing for and daydreaming about while cooped up during lockdown.” This collection is incredibly beautiful, varied, wistful and nostalgic--I love each scent fiercely, and I have to admit that I teared up a bit while testing several of them. I’ve been longing for the simple pleasures of going out to see a movie, or having a milkshake in my favorite local ice cream shop, Cammie’s Old Dutch, or watching my child laugh on a carnival ride and eat kettle corn at the fair. This collection offers us those experiences in scent form and ignites a kernel of joy. Thanks so much, Julia. <3
Honey Craves Coffee Shops
Scent description: The warm, convivial aromas of a neighborhood gathering place. Roasting coffee beans, honey-drizzled cake, freshly baked vanilla cookies, soft, overstuffed chairs, and a hint of steamed milk.
I have to confess that historically, coffee scents have not worked for me (excepting BPAL’s Mornings in New Orleans, whose success I attribute to the chicory au lait). This, though, is much more than a coffee scent. Holy smokes. I mainly get honey-crusted warm brioche--sweet, wholesome, and comforting. It’s not super doughy, but realistic and just right. Warming up the blend and bringing some serious comfort like a scent-hug is the pleasant scent of freshly-roasted coffee beans. This is a scent that is both rich and gentle, comforting and snuggly. A must try for both lovers and skeptics of coffee fragrances.
Honey Craves Festivals
Scent description: Throngs of people gathered together under summer skies. Smoky dragonsblood and nag champa incense, dark honey, live music, green cannabis, spilled beer, bonfires, patchouli, soft earth, and laughter.
Honey Craves Festivals would be perfectly at home in the Green Dream collection! What a beauty. The cannabis note reminds me of the one used in Rose Petal blunt--it’s both green/brown and sweet, like tall late summer meadow grass. The incense notes are soft, gentle, luxurious, and comforting--they effortlessly round out the honeyed cannabis and create a happy and hazy scent that evokes gathering outdoors with good friends in the late afternoon sun. This one is a big, big win!
Honey Craves Ice Cream Parlors
Scent description: Sweet, cold scoops of pleasure. Pistachio ice cream, honey ice cream, Madagascar vanilla gelato, and a chilled porcelain bowl.
Sweet, creamy, honey ice cream in a waffle cone with a maraschino cherry on top. I think the pistachio note is reading as “cherry-like” to my nose. I should note that this pistachio note is toothsome, natural, and non-medicinal. If you typically have trouble with pistachio or cherry-like scent notes, do not fear this one! This scent is a foodie lover’s dream! It’s sweet, but not overly sweet, and happy! With time, the honey ice cream wins out on my skin--it’s a perfect scoop of honey ice cream in a rich waffle cone. Sticky-sweet, creamy, and delicious!
Honey Craves Moonlit Paths
Scent description: All the scents of night-hiking in a deciduous forest with only the moon to light your way. Beeswax absolute, forest floor, damp, decaying leaves, fragrant mosses, wild honey, sleeping trees, and a whiff of feral fur.
I love each fragrance in this collection, but if I absolutely had to pick a favorite, it would be this one. On my skin, this starts out as a version of Waterfall--with damp, moss-covered stone and cool, still water. With time I get more of the sweet honey and warm, snuggly fur. The effect is like walking in a cool, shadowy, moss-draped, stone-filled, deciduous forest with a pup companion. In the distance are fragrant beehives, scenting your way, or blossoms that are so nectar-filled and syrupy-sweet that they mimic the smell of natural honey. Moonlit Paths is a tour de force, and I foresee myself wearing it often. <3
Honey Craves Paradise
Scent description: The essence of a gloriously sunbaked tropical island. An opening of richly sugared mango expands into a blend of heady tiare blossoms, delicate honey, golden sand, and warm coconut-scented body oil.
Julia’s tropical scents always make my heart flutter, and this one is a beauty! It’s a well-blended tropical dream! I get coconut-slicked warm sand, gently heady, lush, creamy, and sweet tiare blooms, and sugar-crusted, ripe, juicy mango. The honey is a delicate haze of sweetness holding the blend together. Unsurprisingly, this has quickly shot up among my favorite scents of all time. It truly is paradise in a bottle, and just what my soul needs right now. Beautiful!
Honey Craves Theater
Scent description: What could ever compare to live theater? Golden vetiver, floral honey, sakura blossoms, rare orchids, white amber, pearl musk, a glass of chilled chardonnay, and a hint of leather. Author! Author!
This scent is brooding and luxurious--this is a Gilded Age theater crusted with gold leaf mouldings and heavy red velvet drapes. I get thick, sweet honey that’s balanced by a bite of vetiver, smooth, worn, dark leather seats, and a splash of chilled white wine. With time the hothouse orchids make their presence known--they lend a languid, humid, heady aspect to the scent. Gorgeous! This would be an excellent scent to wear to a murder mystery dinner theater!
Peaches Crave the Movies
Scent description: An ode to the bygone experience of watching movies in a 1990s era megaplex: the lights go down, the sound goes up, and you are transported into another world. Torn ticket stubs, peach gummy worms, cherry licorice whips, red velvet drapes, buttery popcorn, and smashed candy on the floor.
I thought this scent was going to be overwhelmingly foodie, but I am pleasantly surprised to find it to be complex on my skin--it really is like the entire experience of sitting in the movie theater, snuggled up with your assortment of snacks, waiting for the film reel to flicker on. The peach gummies are most prominent on my skin and they smell true-to-life--sweet, tart, a little gummy/waxy. The buttery popcorn wafts in the background--you’ve handed the bucket to the cinephile to your right while you munch on gummy peach rings. Surrounding all of this is the supremely comforting, lightly fresh but also somehow velvety and luxurious scent of fabric and something mildly papery. These lend some atmosphere to the blend, and the effect is gorgeous. This scent is incredibly nostalgic and comforting for me, and makes me long to go to the movies.
Strawberries Crave Sunlit Paths
Scent description: The happy scent of day-hiking through the dappled sunlight of a coniferous thicket of trees. Sugary red strawberries with Arcana Wildcraft's Her Forest (layers of velvety forest mosses and soft green lichens with wild-harvested Northern fir tips, Bourbon vetiver, black oudh, and a hint of forest floor).
Her Forest (review here) is one of my very favorite Arcana scents. It’s a complex, beautiful, and realistic calming forest scent. Combining this scent with strawberry was a stroke of genius--they blend so incredibly harmoniously. This fragrance is much more than strawberry + Her Forest--it has become a magnificent fragrance of its own. This is a happier, more carefree version of the solemn and peaceful Her Forest. It truly does smell sunlit--like walking along a well-worn sun-dappled path in a beautiful old deciduous forest, fingers stained and juicy from perfect, ripe strawberries. Strawberries Crave Sunlit Paths is bottled happiness.
Vanilla Craves Grind Shows
Scent description: The edible aromas of a traveling carnival overflowing with oddities and amusements. Vanilla-laced cotton candy, deep fried funnel cakes encrusted with powdered sugar, salty peanuts, kettle corn, and caramel-covered apples.
Sweet kettle corn, pink cotton candy, and a pop of salty peanut! With time, the kettle corn wins out as the dominant note for me, and it’s wonderful. It smells so realistic that I feel like I’m sticking my nose into a bag of warm, freshly-popped, sweet and salty kettle corn. This is a wonderful and happy carnival scent that makes me yearn for our local fair. I predict that Vanilla Craves Grind Shows will be a major hit! Don’t sleep on this one, y’all.
Vanilla Craves Mermaid Shoals
Scent description: A gourmand aquatic fantasy. An opening of warm, musky neroli leads to a heart of lemon biscotti, bright tangerine, sunlight glittering on blue water, vanilla, sea foam, briny seaweed absolute, and scattered rose petal incense. .
This one is going to be a smash hit. It’s another fine example of Julia’s expertise with aquatic and tropical scents, with some toothsome gourmand elements added to keep things interesting! This is the scent of eating orange creamsicles and iced lemon cookies on the most beautiful tropical beach. The creamsicle is perfection--smooth, sweet vanilla cream and juicy, tart tangerine--and the iced lemon cookies melt a bit in your fingers. The sea breeze carries the scents of sparkling, pearl-crusted foam, and a light hint of waxy pink blossoms. This is a fantasy indeed. An utterly beautiful scent!

[Ludacris:] Is it the glitter on her breast Or the gloss on her lips Hickeys on the chest Or the toss of the hips I’m lost in the mix So I floss in the sea Turning out the hits That only exist in your dreams
[Shawna:] It’s the mo’ maker Dough chaser Now get it right Would ya Heartbreaker I keep it tight But I’m no faker Can laugh now But you’ll cry later
[Ludacris:] I think I like you in ya freak clothes Freak those In my specialized peep shows And then I’ll make ya Touch ya knees to ya elbows Toes Girl from the street of Melrose
[Shawna:] It’s clear to see I like it when we smoke that Choke that I’ll freak that (No doubt) You kind of got me like In a freeze when you roll out You got itchy balls from where I blow that
[Mariah:] I got myself a lover Who loves what I like When he invites me over I come every time Oh my sugar daddy Takes me for a ride Whatever way we’re going I expect to leave on time
He’s all mine And his loving makes me high Like a taste of ecstasy All I need is him to be my loverboy
Loverboy Come on and love me Give me more Touch me and touch me I enjoy the way you rock me all night long (Baby all night long) Loverboy come on and take me Only you know how to make me Shudder with anticipation All night long (All night long)
I got myself a lover And he’s so sublime He’s quite a bit of heaven When he comes inside So come on sugar daddy Take me for a ride Whatever way we’re going next I expect to leave on time
I get weak And his candy’s just so sweet When he caressed my whole body All I need is him to be my loverboy

Are You A Bubble Tea Addict? Do You Know What Goes Into It?
Swathi Handoo January 3, 2019
All that glitters is not gold. And all that’s sweet and milky is not healthy, especially if they are beverages. Be it tea, coffee, milkshake, or juice – sugar makes it tasty. Bubble tea is an Asian spin-off from such sweetened beverages.
Bubble tea is a beverage that is made of milk, sugar, fruit flavors, ice – and bubbles! What are these bubbles? What is so special about this tea? You have to read on with an open mind for answers to these questions. Let’s get started!
Table Of Contents
What Is Bubble Tea? How Is It Made?
Bubble tea, also known as boba milk tea or pearl tea, is a drink made from a range of fruity flavors or coffee or tea, sugar, and various toppings, including the ‘bubbles.’
The central ingredients in this tea are the bubbles or pearls or boba. These boba balls are made of tapioca. Cassava starch from sweet potato, chamomile root, caramel, brown sugar, and various additives are boiled to produce chewy, round balls.
These tapioca balls are then added to hot, cold, and blended beverages. Such drinks are usually consumed with a wide straw, through which the balls are slurped and chewed.
Bubble tea comes in several flavors and combinations. You get honeydew, lychee, mango, passion fruit, peach, plum, strawberry, decaf, coffee, mocha, black tea, green tea, oolong tea, white tea, and many hybrid flavors.
Interesting! But, where did bubble tea come from?
Back To TOC
Where Is It From?
Bubble tea originated in the 1980s in Taiwan. A Taiwanese tea shop owner, Liu Han‐Chieh, and his product development manager, Lin Hsiu Hui, experimented by adding different ingredients like fruit and syrup and a few tapioca balls to milk tea beverages (1).
It became popular in the 1990s throughout Asia, and it has gained more popularity in the United States and Europe since 2000. Teens and young adults all over world binge on boba teas made from exotic and colorful flavors and toppings.
Just A Minute!
Some say ‘bubble’ tea got its name not because of the tapioca balls, but because of the foam that is formed from the heavy-duty shaking this drink goes through.
The classic types of bubble tea are pearl milk tea (milk tea + tapioca pearls), bubble milk tea (milk tea + large pearls), and black pearls milk tea (milk tea + black colored pearls). Which one would be your pick?
Do you think only its attractive colors and numerous customizable flavors have made bubble tea this popular? Despite all the sugar, bubble tea is associated with a few health benefits.

Are There Any Benefits Of Bubble Tea?
Well, not many – given its ingredients and composition.
Bubble tea can give you instant energy. Sixteen ounces of boba tea have about 300-400 calories – which means quick energy! Drinking the right boba tea is better than having carbonated drinks that give you a sugar rush and no nutrition. The key is to choose ingredients that are natural and safe to add in your tea drink.
But why are there no benefits of bubble tea? And what happens if you drink a lot of bubble tea?

What Are The Risks And Side Effects Of Drinking Bubble Tea?
Despite its popularity in the Western world, bubble tea is associated with quite a few risks and side effects.
1. Could Cause Cardiovascular Diseases
Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) like bubble tea are made with high-fructose sweetening syrups. Such sweeteners exceed the recommended added sugar intake levels for men (max. 150 kcal/day) and women (max. 100 kcal/day). A 16 oz. serving of bubble tea contains 38 g of total sugar!
There is increasing evidence that added sugars can lead to metabolic disorders, primarily cardiovascular disorders, in young adults. Replacing added sugars with natural sweeteners might bring down the risk (1).
2. Might Be Responsible For Childhood Obesity And Diabetes
Shutterstock
A large-sized boba drink exceeds 500 calories and contributes to 25% of total daily calories (1). Thanks to the empty calories and added artificial sweeteners, boba tea is now considered as a factor contributing to obesity and diabetes in children, teens, and young adults.
The high dietary glycemic load from such SSBs due to fructose (in the form of high fructose corn syrup or sucrose) can also increase the risk for hepatic insulin resistance, visceral fat deposition, and elevated triglyceride and cholesterol levels in these individuals.
3. Could Cause Cancer
The tapioca balls are the ones to blame here. Recently, a few German researchers found traces of cancer-causing chemicals in the boba balls. Substances like DEHP, acetophenone, styrene, and various brominated compounds were identified.
These substances belong to a class of chemicals known as PCBs or polychlorinated biphenyls, which are potent carcinogens. These carcinogens are suspected to be toxic for the GI tract, kidneys, and respiratory system.
The PCBs in the tapioca balls have been known to cause adverse effects on the immune, reproductive, nervous, and endocrine systems of the body. Hence, they are banned from use in manufacturing in the US (2).
Okay, this is scary!
If bubble tea was so unhealthy, why is the world crazy about it?
Let’s take it this way. The concept of bubble tea is actually healthy. But the ingredients and the proportions in which they are used are unhealthy. So, what we do? Read on for some hope!

Ways To Make Bubble Tea Healthier
Just because it might have cancer-causing, fattening additives and piles on empty calories doesn’t mean you should completely shun bubble tea.
The research and studies are in the process of being verified, but bubble tea contains very little nutritional value.
If you wish to indulge in some of it, opt for green or black teas without milk. You can ask for no sweetener or choose brown sugar or jaggery as the sweetening agent.
Get a smaller scoop of tapioca pearls (or no pearls at all!). Most importantly, find out the source and learn about the manufacturing process of commercially available tapioca balls.
If you are overwhelmed by what’s being written and said about bubble tea, why don’t you make a glass of it at home? Free of suspicion and guilt! But how?

How To Make Healthy Bubble Tea At Home
Check out this super simple recipe.
5-minute Bubble Tea: Easy And Tasty!
What You Need
Water: 4 cups
Quick cooking pearl tapioca: 1 cup (you may adjust the quantity accordingly)
Brewed black or green tea: 6 cups
Sweet condensed milk or almond milk: ¼ cup (optional)
Brown sugar: 4 teaspoons or to taste (optional)
Ice cubes
Pitcher
Teapot: medium-large size
Let’s Make It!
Add the water to a pot and bring it to a boil.
Add the tapioca pearls and cover the pot. Leave it for 2 minutes.
Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 minutes.
Drain the pearls and set aside.Pour the brewed tea, condensed milk, and sugar into a pitcher. Stir continuously to dissolve the sugar crystals.
Refrigerate this tea mixture until it is chilled (about 1 hour).
Scoop the drained tapioca pearls into 4 large glasses, about 2 tablespoons each.
Fill each glass with tea mixture and top with ice.
Sink into the balcony chair and sip on it over a relaxed summer afternoon!
via GIPHY
You can try replacing any of these ingredients with a healthier option. Use soy milk, almond milk, skimmed, or low-fat milk if you don’t like your tea without milk. Coconut milk is a less explored option, but worth a try.
Choose natural flavors over artificial syrups. You can make detox drinks by adding lemon, chamomile, aloe vera, rose, mint leaves, etc., instead of sweet strawberry, litchi, or black currant flavors.
In Short…
Like everything else in life, you need to balance the sugar, fat, and carbs in your bubble tea. If you are like me, who just melts looking at bubble teas, this article should be an eye-opener!
It’s alright to drink this Taiwanese tea drink – but choose your ingredients wisely. Having milk- and sugar-free or total vegan boba tea in small portions is way better than guzzling down cans of beer or carbonated cola.

Why the Mystery of the Met’s Unicorn Tapestries Remains Unsolved
The Unicorn is Attacked (from the Unicorn Tapestries), 1495-1505. Gift of John D. Rockefeller Jr., 1937. Image courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Unicorn Tapestries, traditionally known as “The Hunt of the Unicorn,” are widely considered to be among the greatest artworks in existence.
Comprised of seven monumental tapestries—each measuring 12 feet tall and up to 14 feet wide—they depict exquisitely dressed noblemen with a team of huntsmen and hounds who pursue a unicorn through a flowering forest. The creature is found, slain, carried to a castle, and, in the series’s famous final panel, resurrected, resting in a garden within a circular fence.
Marked by their depth of space and luminosity, the tapestries are woven from wool and silk thread, some of which is wrapped in silver or gold. (Locate any one of the mysterious “AE” ciphers, which appear on every hanging, and you’ll see the way it glitters.)
On permanent display at the Cloisters, the upper Manhattan home of the Met’s medieval art collection, the series is famously cryptic: Its origins and symbolism still baffle scholars. They have been examined, interpreted, and discussed for more than a century, resulting in no definitive conclusion.
Together, the tapestries incorporate familiar aspects of unicorn lore into a traditional medieval hunt. The animal is bearded with cloven hooves, a milk-white agent of spiritual or medicinal purity. Its horn can heal wounds and purify water: In one panel, The Unicorn is Found, the creature dips its appendage into a stream, making it safe for men and other animals to drink.
In another panel, The Mystic Capture of the Unicorn, it is tamed by a willing virgin, who leads the unicorn into an enclosed rose garden to meet its sacrificial fate. In this way, it appears both secular and religious—a duality common in the Middle Ages, when unicorns symbolized Christianity, immortality, wisdom, lovers, and marriage.

There are a few generally agreed-upon elements of the tapestries’ history. They were probably made around 1495 to 1505, a period indicated by their compositions and dress of the people that appear in them. The characters’ poses, facial expressions, clothing, and hair resemble those of Parisian prints and miniature paintings from that time, leading historians to believe a French designer conceived the hangings and sent the designs to Brussels (which was then a major tapestry weaving center) to be made.
Chemical analysis has revealed the three dye plants used to create its still-vibrant thread colors: madder (red), woad (blue), and weld (yellow).
The earliest record of the tapestries is a 1680 inventory of possessions located in François VI de La Rochefoucauld’s castle in Paris. In the 1730s, the hangings were moved to the family’s Verteuil château, where they were looted during the French Revolution. The family re-acquired the tapestries in the 1850s—including a severely damaged one, left in fragments—and sent the six complete ones to New York for exhibition in 1922.
There, they were seen and bought by John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who kept them in his apartment until 1937, when he gave them to the Cloisters. The remaining pieces of the seventh tapestry were purchased separately from Count Gabriel de La Rochefoucauld of Paris; the complete series was reunited at the Cloisters’s opening in 1938.
Far outweighing the facts are countless unanswered questions, primarily concerned with the meaning behind the tapestries, the artist(s) who made them, and their patronage—alluded to by the recurring monogram made from the letters “A” and “E,” which appear to be tied together with a knotted cord.
The Unicorn is Found (from the Unicorn Tapestries), 1495 – 1505. Gift of John D. Rockefeller Jr., 1937. Image courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Nancy Wu, a museum educator who’s been at the Cloisters for two decades, finds the “AE” cipher most perplexing of all. Often appearing near a hanging’s center and at its four corners, the insignia also materializes on dog collars and in other discreet places in the works.
She told me there are three general theories about the mark, noting that initials in the Middle Ages were sometimes derived from the first and last letters of one name. Some believe it signifies Adam and Eve, while others have claimed it identifies Anne of Brittany, a major patron of the arts who was active around the late 15th century and who, in 1499, married King Louis XII of France—a fitting occasion for the tapestries to celebrate.
A more recent theory conjectures that the letters represent Antoinette of Ambroise, the wife of François de La Rochefoucauld’s second son, Antoine, who was born around 1475. Since the tapestries were undoubtedly at the de La Rochefoucauld castle in 1680, this theory is particularly tantalizing.
“One of the main questions people ask is how long it took to make them,” Wu says. “Each tapestry was probably stretched over one enormous loom. But there’s no way of answering without knowing how many people were on the loom, and how many looms were worked on at the same time.”
Tapestries are woven with colored thread called the weft, which is wrapped around long, strong threads called the warp. Medieval tapestry weavers, usually young men, worked side by side in teams, using small tools. They worked only by daylight, as candlelight might distort the thread colors. A skilled weaver might complete one square inch in an hour. Wu estimates that one tapestry could have taken months, if not a year or two, to complete.
The impeccable quality and technical achievement of the hangings suggest a prosperous patron commissioned a superior workshop for the project. “Tapestries were status symbols,” Wu says. “It was more expensive to purchase a tapestry than build a castle.”
She had the rare opportunity to see the flip-side of the hangings in the 1990s, when they were removed so that the gallery could be renovated. “The backs looked like the complete reverse of the front. You’d expect to see shaggy, cut-off threads, but these were unbelievably finished,” Wu remembers. The reverse also revealed some fading of the original colors: The now-dark forest, for example, was once a tender, early summer green.
The Unicorn is Killed and Brought to the Castle (from the Unicorn Tapestries, 1495-1505. Gift of John D. Rockefeller Jr., 1937. Image courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Unicorn in Captivity (from the Unicorn Tapestries), 1495-1505. Gift of John D. Rockefeller Jr., 1937. Image courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Unpacking the tapestries’ densely populated symbolism is an entirely different beast. The plants alone are loaded with meaning, and there are some 101 species woven into the background, almost all of which have been identified.
Looking at the last, most iconic tapestry, The Unicorn in Captivity, provides ample food for thought. For Wu, the symbolism could be both secular and religious, with layered meanings that would have been understood by people in the Middle Ages. She points out the wound on the unicorn’s right side, the same place where Jesus was wounded on the cross.
(In the previous hanging, The Unicorn is Killed and Brought to the Castle, the creature has a wreath of oak, hawthorne, and holly around its neck, further suggesting its reference to Christ resurrected in the final tapestry, where the unicorn sits in a blooming garden resembling paradise.)
A secular interpretation of the hanging could see the gold chain tying the unicorn to a tree as a symbol of true love, as poets from the Middle Ages often used the chain to symbolize a lover’s devotion to his lady. If the tapestries were made to commemorate a marriage, the garden’s plants and trees echo this theme: The unicorn rests below a pomegranate tree, whose fruit, covered in seeds, was regarded as a symbol for fertility.
Seed-covered wild strawberries crop up around the animal’s tail, and its horn, centerstage, suggests a phallus.
Wu believes more concrete answers will eventually arise from the decades of research devoted to the tapestries. “The AE cipher is so prevalent—the artist couldn’t be more generous in trying to tell us something about the owner,” she says. “Our best hope is in archival work. It’s vexing, but it’s also intriguing to pursue the meaning behind this phenomenal work of art.”

Theatre Review of the Westend production “Wicked”
On the Wednesday 1st February 16, 2017 at 2:30pm my class and I went to see a Musical performance called Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. Gregory Maguire that wrote the novel Wicked: The Life and Time of the Wicked Witch of the West whilst he was living in London in 1990 made Wicked one of the most popular musicals that is ever performed today and it was first opened on Broadway on October 30th 2003. The plot of the play is a similar story to The Wonderful Wizard Oz which was written by L. Frank Baum, but this play represents “The Untold story of the Wizard of Oz” where the events, characters and situations taken from the book written by Baum. The play was set in the Land of “Oz” in 1900 where the story is told about a friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University who are Glinda and Elphaba. They are totally different from each other. Following a meeting with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship throughout the play becomes stronger but lives are taken into different paths.
The practitioners they mainly use was Constantin Stanislavski (1863-1938) who is Russian theatre practitioner, the method that was use was based on the seven steps on developing a believable character and the actors used it where they got in the character’s shoes and made it believable.
The main characters in this play were Elphaba, Glinda, Madame Morrible, Fiyero, Dr. Dillamond, Nessarose, Boq and the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the rest of the other characters were the witch’s mother and father, the midwife, monkeys, students, palace guards, Denizens of the Emerald City and other Citizens of Oz. Elphaba Tropp was played by Willemijn Verkaiki, she is a female with black hair who was born in Rush Margins, Wend Hardings, Munchkinland but what was unusual of her is that she was born green and later in the play she was known as the “the wicked witch of the West. She is seen different from others and she want people to accept her as a natural human like themselves. She is a daughter to Melena Tropp and The Wizard of Oz (who you would find out later in the play) and half-sister to Nessarose.
Glinda Upland was played by Suzie Mathers, she is a female who has strawberry blond hair born and grew up in Frottica, Upper Uplands in Northwest Gillikin. She is known as The Good Witch, makes sure she gets everything and it is perfect, the prettiest girl, and VERY Popular. She gets married to Fiyero (but unfortunately it did not last long) and becomes best friend with Elphaba during the play. Madame Morrible was played by Sue Kelvin who is a female known as the headmistress at Shiz University with white, blondish hair, grew up in Gilikin. In the musical, she has powers that changes the weather. Nessarose Tropp was played by Sarah McNicholas, she is a female with brown hair who grew up in Munchkinland. In the musical, she is the girl in a wheelchair due to the storm that made the building fall on her but later was able to walk again due to Elphaba’s powers. She is a half-sister to Elphaba and daughter to Melena Tropp but Elphaba and Nessarose think they are both have the same dad. Boq was played by Idriss Kargbo, he is a short male with black hair and grew up in Munchkinland. He is a very bubbly character and smiled a lot to get people’s attention, he likes Glinda but has to put up with his relationship with Nessarose. Later in the play he turned into a Tin Woodman which came from the story of Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Doctor Dillamond was Martin Ball, he is a goat that can speak to communicate with humans. He is known as the professor at Shiz University and during the play he lose his power of speech which therefore Elphaba does everything in her power to get him back to normal with Glinda’s help. Fiyero was played by Oliver Savile, who was a male with brown hair, very flirty, popular and a ladies man. He was married to Glinda in the play but later broke up with her and got with Elphaba. In the musical he turned into a scarecrow but everyone thought he was dead. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was played by Mark Curry who is an old man with white hair and a father to Elphaba but does not know till near the end of the play. He uses Elphaba and Madame Morrible’s powers but use Elphaba’s book spell to give his monkey called Chistery (played by Will Lucas) wings.
The costumes were designed by Susan Hilferty, they represented the different places that was set and the character’s personality. For example, looking at the difference between Glinda and Elphaba, there is a good and a bad witch shown from their costumes. Glinda would dress in light colours such as sky-blue bubble dress, light pink ball party dress, white school outfit and other costumes with rainbow colours with glitter and stars that allow her to shine on stage. It also shows her character where she wants to shine, feel special and look prettier than everyone to make her popular, where Elphaba didn’t know how to, by looking at her costume they were the same colours which were green, black or dark blue. Their headpieces they wore also shows their personality and characters where Glinda would wear a sparkly crown and Elphaba would wear a black pointy witch hat that is shaped as a traffic cone and from looking at their headpieces, it shows good and bad witches. Madame Morrible wore gold in every costume she has, which represents her magic and who she is as her character. At the start of the musical she wore a red dress that has gold designs on it and later when she is part of the Emerald city, she wore green which also had gold in it. I notice that both dresses were designed the same but were different colours where it was long to her feet with long wide sleeves that was hanging from her wrist to the floor. The Wizard of the Oz wore a grey suit with a black high top hat to represent his age, and his character where his jacket looked like a cap that can swing from his side when he went off to do his job. Another character’s costume that represent their personality and who they are is Fiyero where his costume change colours throughout the play where we see him entre the stage he is wearing a white polo shirt with a vest waist coat over it and tight cream coloured trousers and high brown boots, an outfit that looked like he rides a horse. This outfit shows that he is charming, good looking man that draws Glinda’s attention but I noticed that the costume was a different colour (green) shirt and trousers when he was with Elphaba when they fell in love. This means that when he changed his costume colour it shows that he has different interactions with both the characters, Glinda and Elphaba.
The play settings, each costume that represented each character or settings. For example, when they were at Shiz University the characters where dressed up as students with blue and white stripy shirts, trousers, skirts, blazers and ties as if it was a school uniform, the characters that were those who were part of the emerald city wore light green and mint colours costume, during the clock of the time dragon they wore dark red, green and black. When they were looking for the witch they wore autumn colours. During the play, I spotted that every character has the same hairstyle and costumes when the setting is change. What I mean by this, there was a character that had her hair shaped as a upside down shoe in both Emerald City and when she was hunting for the witch with the same costume but a different colour. Another example on a character who did this during the play was Madame Morrible. Also, I notice that all the animals apart from the flying monkeys wear human costumes with their face shaped as the animal so the audience know what was what, such as the goats and Dr Dillamond, lion, and other animals on stage. Monkey’s costume was quite different where they would be full shoulders to feet leotard that looked multi-colour brownish skin with a monkey mask face that had wires that was curls from their head to represent the hair and wings attach to the back where in the play, Elphaba ask the Wizard to set them free and that is where the wings come out from their backs.
Props were also use to represent the characters such as Elphaba’s Broom to show that she is a witch with a broom to travel to where she need to go and carry it around with her, Glinda’s mirror that shows that she is pretty and loves the way she looked, old fashion suit cases that justifies the time the play is set in, forks and spades the people use in the ensemble to show that they are ready to find the witch, a bike and a carrier to show that it was outside and guns that the palace guards use to threaten who they going to kill. This made the play more naturalistic because it made it look real in terms of where it was taken place, it made the audience believe in the characters more and allow them to connect with them. Looking at the mirror that Glinda has closely, there was not mirror on it, this is because it avoids technical issues, reflecting light into the audience or into places that can go on fire and distraction to the actors on stage. The staging was well managed, set design and a lot of techniques was involves such as the use of space, timing and rhythmic accuracy, impetus and etc. Some of the actors had their back to the audience when listening to Glinda telling the story of her best friend but to allow them to project their voices which singing they turned around to face the audience so their projection is not blocked. When they had finished they looked back at Glinda. Because of where I was sitting which was very close to the stage I could see most of the transitions that was happening when the characters were coming from the ground or being lifts the flooring would move down or up. When Glinda was going up with the clock wheel, there would be a clip at the back of her dress would to stop her from falling off. There were no blackouts during the play, the actors would be going to a different setting by singing whilst the transition is changing to distract the audience from noticing the change or walking on a spot whilst the staging is moving or a new setting is transitioning on stage and the colour change to represents time of the day such morning or night which was on point. The noise of the dragon was loud and gloomy to represent the evil and something bad happening and the sound of every movement they make happened when they are about to sing. During the welcoming Elphaba and Glinda to Emerald City, there was a woman with an old fashion camera, and once she clicked that camera to take a picture, it made a click sound and a light flash. This was impressive because it happened so quickly that it shows that it was well rehearse where the woman would have to make sure she clicked the camera just in time with the music, sound and the light. This also showed that they work well with the technicians and musicians to ensure that they do it at the exact same time.
I believe that the play was both non-naturalistic and naturalistic because there were things that happened now a days and somethings do not exist. For example, the play showed non-naturalistic where the animals apart from the monkeys were acting like humans, walking around stage and talking to communicate, however the naturalistic aspect of this is that in the scene where Elphaba asked Dr Dillamond to share her lunch, she ate the sandwich but Dr Dillamond ate the paper that sandwich was wrapped in which demonstrated as a goat, they eat paper which was realistic. Another example where it shows naturalism, the wheelchair that Nessarose was not the wheelchairs we use now days but her wheelchair represents the period time of the play which was in the 1900s. Also, the naturalistic aspect overall to demonstrate the characters were the costumes and the props they used, this relates back to Stanislavski’s method to make a believable character which is important as I have mentioned before, to allow the audience to connect with the characters on stage to know who they are and what their personality is like.
In conclusion, overall the play was satisfactory in my opinion but I did like some parts of the play which got my attention but some part didn’t. I preferred the character Elphaba, the woman herself has an amazing voice that just blew me in the audience, it was strong and you could hear the emotions that she had and what it was like to be fed up, seen in the way she is. I connected with her character more because I put myself into her shoes and felt the way she felt, she was funny, out-going and wanted what was best for her and other people around her.
I liked how they set out the staging for Glinda and Elphaba’s bed room, it allowed me to connect with the characters more, their two beds were center stage with shelves at the side of them, one was on stage left that belonged to Glinda and one was on stage right which belonged to Elphaba, but about this setting related so much to the character’s personality where on Elphaba’s shelf it was dull, dark colours with a lot of books that was neatly piled on top of each other to show that Elphaba loves to read as well as her character being really smart where on Glinda’s shelf there were different colours and type of shoes laid out from top to bottom which looks like different outfits that goes with every single shoe, the colours shows her personality and her character it represents that she is a good witch and loves wearing bright colours. Along with this, their bed sheets were different Elphaba’s bed sheet was dull and dark coloured sheet and Glinda’s were pink and nicely made. As to Glinda’s character she likes to get attention, it showed in the play to what she was wearing and what her valuable things looked like. It drew the audience’s attention on her more because she lights up the stage but it gave Elphaba more work to get people’s attention that she wanted.
What made the play even more lively was the special effect of the rain, it made the show feel real which at one point felt like it was raining in the theatre. Towards the (nearly to) end I found it emotional, they showed Elphaba’s death: as the to where she was growing up they thought she was an actual witch where they thought her soul was unclean and they purred water on her to melt her but the water didn’t melt her because she is a human. This was shown behind a backdrop that has shadows of the action happening which made it more powerful.
The skills and attributes of the performers in Wicked, would need to have vocal skills due to the singing and to what they were saying on stage; they need to ensure they know how to project their voice on stage, practice the timing, pitch and tempo of their voice when it comes to group singing, motivation where they are willing to come in to the theatre, rehearse, be ready for the matinee slot and then when that is over, they have a quick break and warm-up for their evening slot as well as having the flexibly of time and discipline to ensure they are on time, the ability to work independently on scripts, their own songs and movements, dancing skills due it being a musical; dance is always involves where the performers should be willing to pick up the moves quickly and remember it on stage.
Relating to vocal skills, a performer would need to do a lot of warm-ups such as tongue twisters and breathing control to know when to breath in between the line when singing to allow the performer to project their voice, practice on different pitch, intonation and the volume to ensure it matched the song and sounds right. Some actors travel from different countries, therefore may have different accents such as Scottish, British, Australian and American. I believe that because the play was written in an American accent and British, the actors would have to play around with the accent to merge with the play which means they have to work on the pronunciations due to different country pronounce their words differently from others and allowing them to have the ability to speak fluently and coherently when being their character. Also, it is important that the actors, eat healthy and drink enough water and avoid the food or drinks that may damage the vocal cords.

these are pretty much the last items that I need for my Art Stuff collection. I am so grateful, if anyone sees my posts about all the stuff I've been buying, I hope I'm not coming across as bragging. I am just so happy about this and want to share my excitement.
I got these in 6th grade for my birthday (january 2 2001) and had a horrible reaction but I kept using them lol. I only care about the Frutie Cutie and Sassy Starberry, but the Sherbet Shake is neat and I had some Stylin' Strawberry back in the day but it wasn't one of my favorites. I'm still excited about those, though.
