Scatology (1985), Horse Rotorvator (1986), Gold Is the Metal (With the Broadest Shoulders) (1987), Love’s Secret Domain (1991), Stolen and Contaminated Songs (1992), Coil
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Coil’s first era, evidence that the band’s filthy majesty was divine, ingrained from the start. Even as Coil found footing, throughout Scatology’s admirably chaotic ambitions of advancing and progressing industrial music, Balance and Christopherson’s theatre had not just scale but potency; severity to the pop and irresistibility to the terror. Horse Rotorvator saw Coil’s industrial regality emerge more indisputably, orchestralism and pop combining for more penetrant darkness, more viciously disturbing atmospheres. Love’s Secret Domain then melded it all with acid house, yet far from chintzy or cheap or even danceable was even filthier, audial snapshots of dimly lit, sordid nightclubs-adjacent pits. .
I include here Gold Is the Metal (With the Broadest Shoulders) and Stolen and Contaminated Songs, neither of which are proper records but sort of side notes, releases showing Coil’s sketches, workings-out. Yet far from inessential, each deserves to be considered as highly as the three proper records. A tangent: I once had a profound moment during which the sinister, magisterial ‘Cardinal Points’, which once played as a supermoon rose over me. Quite appropriate, quite Coil, in a way.
Pick(s): ‘At the Heart of It All’, ‘Penetralia’, ‘Cardinal Points’, ‘Windowpane’, ‘Who’ll Fall’

Hey Freaks and Creeps, I have some good news and bad news for those who are planning on coming to the NEPA Horror Film Festival tomorrow.
First, the bad news. Tony Todd announced that he's unfortunately unable to come due to a sudden illness. He and the event runners are super apologetic about it and have offered refunds since they knew how huge the hype was for him coming. However, there is good news. Very good news, actually.
The good news is that Virginia Madsen is still attending as planned and at the very last minute (less than 24 hours before the doors open), they secured a brand new guest - that being William Ragsdale from Fright Night. They also just announced that the double feature is now Candyman and Fright Night (as opposed to having Night of the Living Dead '90). This is an absolute baller move and shows the dedication the team has to keeping things together and working ridiculously fast. I know people are still bummed about Tony, but I would say to still come if possible. This minor setback is just that - a minor setback.
If you're planning on attending, remember to bring an umbrella and sunscreen since the weather is scheduled to be a mess. Hell, bring a chair too in case the line is long for the meet and greet. It sure as hell was when Bill Moseley was there last year.
Come support some amazing talent (the actors, live musicians, and indie filmmakers for the film festival portion). Mingle with fans and vendors. Scoop up great merch. Get some damn good food from the food trucks. Support local brewers and coffee roasters (like Parlor craft soda and Dead Sled Coffee). Y'know how it goes. And, of course, go take a selfie with the bust and Jason Miller downtown at some point.
Rain or shine, this is going to be a kickass day. If you're still interested and want to learn more, check out the NEPA Horror Film Fest page on Facebook for more information - which includes their Event Brite page for ticket information (or just pay at the gates). [Along with the official NEPA Horror Film Festival website]
Meet you on the otherside, horror hounds. 🐝🧛💀🐝🧛‍♂️

Klassik Vs. Vol. 1 - Young and Wasted
Album Version '83 vs. Animalize Live Uncensored '84
Originally, I really wanted to title this one Woung and Yasted, but since it fits much better conceptually in my brand new rubric, let's just leave it at an honorable mention, which I simply can't resist.
Anyway, in order to live out a little impulse of unreasonableness, but hopefully not to become irrational in the process, let me say a few words about Eric Carr and Gene Simmons in light of this new kind of Kiss song (1).
I mean, sure, I know it was written by Gene and Vinnie Vincent, and that Gene sings it on the studio version of Lick It Up (1983). And of course I am fully aware that it sounds pretty fantastic on the album, and that Gene's insane continuous scream over the top performance on it has to be considered nothing short of phenomenal.
But as it happens I heard Lick It Up in its entirety for the first time after watching Animalize Live Uncensored (1985), so I'm pretty much influenced by Eric Carr's vocals when it comes to this song. And it's not just my mind that remains pretty stubborn, but also my emotional intelligence, because I actually don't think the live version of Young and Wasted is as good as you might think. I mean Eric sings it pretty well, plays uptempo drums at the same time, and I love his voice, but it just doesn't come close to Gene's interpretation.
To delve a little deeper into the intricate background to this situation. After my re-entry as a fan in (pre-internet) 1992, the only 80s Kiss music I'd come across that I hadn't explored before was Hot in the Shade (1989) and Smashes, Thrashes & Hits (1988) (2). Both albums on which Eric Carr sings studio tracks.
But when I held my Lick It Up CD in my hands for the first time, I simply assumed that Eric would also sing Young and Wasted on the album version, regardless of what was obviously noted in the credits. After all, Peter Criss had also regularly sung on songs like Hard Luck Woman, Mainline or Getaway, none of which he had written himself (2).
Up to this point, I was still trying to paint an unfinished picture, simply and always assuming that Eric would sing at least one song on every studio album after Music from The Elder (1981). In fact, according to Kiss tradition, he absolutely and irrevocably had to. I mean, who in blazes would ever assume otherwise, because the drummer in Kiss had always sung at least one song on pretty much all the klassik 70's Make Up albums!
How should I put it? Is it all just misfortunate kissocialization, or is there a tiny bit of justified criticism of Paul and Gene shining through here? But be that as it may, I hereby and for once and for all time officially declare Young and Wasted to be an Eric Carr song.
And that's that!
Side Note:
(1) Young and Wasted, from '83-'86, by the way, an Eric Carr vocal live standard with a focus between '84 and '85 on the Animalize tour.
(2) Eric had also (co-)written two tracks on Music from The Elder without singing either of them himself. Gene sings Paul's God of Thunder on Destroyer (1976) and Peter sang some of Ace's Paul's songs, Eric Singer singing Paul's etc, after all, that's how it goes with Kiss from time to time.
