To know me is to know that I love a trip down memory lane! I wouldn’t say I live in the past, but if anyone were to say I did, I wouldn’t put up much of an argument. Lol Although for me it’s deeper than living in the past, it’s an infatuation with anything older than me. Whether it’s women, cars or music, anything that was here prior to the late 80’s has my full attention.

Moving with this mindset is what lead me to want to venture into film photography back in 2015. Having been shooting for 6 years at that point, I felt compelled to slow down and look back at the photography of the past. My mind was bombarded with thoughts and memories of what our relationship with photography was prior to everyone having a camera phone in their pocket.

I missed the physical aspect of photography! Remember what it was like to have an actual photograph that you could hold in your hand? Men carried photos of their wives and children in their wallets. Young lovers had pictures of their sweethearts in their lockers at school and framed photos of loved ones at their work desk. A friend showing up with the pictures from a previous event, or going through the stacks of photo albums at your grandmothers house. A time where you could still pick up a magazine for your commute to work, and there you would see photos of the highest caliber printed on actual paper. As a photographer I wanted to contribute to the world of Film Photography.

So it wasn’t long before I was on eBay going through the millions of listings for old 35mm film cameras. I wasn’t even sure what I was looking for. All I knew was, it had to be a Canon. It was there that I found her. A pre owned ‘Canon AE-1 Program’ produced in 1985. It was in great pre-owned condition and it came with the lens, the strap and an external flash! It was love at first sight (or at least the sight of the picture. Lol) At the time I remember it being very inexpensive. Something in the neighborhood of $80 total, Shipping and all! (Of course this is before the 35mm Film Revolution.) It was a no brainer. I hit ‘Buy it Now’ and waited for my new toy to arrive!
I told myself I would learn how to shoot, develop snd print 35mm film. Within a week I had already shot a full roll and was likely starting the second. I’ve fallen behind on learning how to develop and print but I’ll definitely be there at some point. I received my camera in the mail, named her Penelope (all my cameras have names) and the rest is history.

I’ve talked about the weird things I want to do to some newer-vintage Cadillacs in the past, and I’ve also mentioned here that our family’s daily driver is a 1983 Cadillac Sedan Deville purchased new by my wife’s grandfather. It’s a really great car and I’m coming to like it a lot just as it sits. That said, I could envision giving into my tinkerer side with any number of Ford Panther or GM…

The Hagley is observing National Drive-Thru Day today with this ca. 1948 postcard from the White Turkey Drive-In, a drive-in restaurant and cocktail lounge that once operated out of Orlando, Florida.
The drive-thru restaurant, rather than the drive-in, was invented around the time that this photograph was taken. America’s first drive-thru was established in 1947 at Red’s Giant Hamburg on Route 66 in Springfield, Missouri. This model soon came to replace the drive-in, a concept first developed in 1921 by the Pig Stand, a Texas chain of restaurants.
Drive-thrus quickly became a ubiquitous part of American life. In addition to other modifications made to accommodate their popularity, American car makers began to plan car interiors around their use. Third-party sellers were advertising installable car snack trays based on those used in drive-ins as early as 1950, and innovations in this product soon followed.
By 1955, Chevy began including rudimentary cup holders on the insides of glove compartment doors, a design modification that could also be found in the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air and the 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, which added a magnetized base and four metal tumblers. But this safety-conscious design put perhaps too much faith in the public; it assumed that drivers who were eating and drinking in their cars would only be doing so while the car was stopped, rather than while also managing the task of driving. The car cup holder as we know it today was introduced in 1983, in that year’s Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager.
This postcard comes from Hagley Library’s collection of Postcards of motels, roadside attractions, restaurants, etc. in the United States (Accession  2007.214). To view more items from this collection, visit its page on our Digital Archive by clicking here.

Oldsmobile’s flagship Ninety Eight dated back to 1941 (spawned to replace the 1940 series 90) and had ridden GM’s big C-body with Cadillacs and primo Buicks ever since. The 98 was always “Oldsmobile’s Cadillac,” but it was more visually restrained than its cousins. Like Lancias in Italy or Humbers in England, the 98 was for people who had means and wanted luxury but didn’t necessarily want to show off. 1977’s downsizing resulted in a more logical C-body and Olds’ version, shedding its traditional fender skirts and slab sides, the plainest of the set. Plainer or not, Olds buyers loved it and the 98 hit record sales - nearly 140K in 1977. This generation (77-84) was the model’s golden age, but its success was overshadowed by Olds’ diesel V8 failure. When the new downsized GM cars debuted in the fall of 1976, Oldsmobile was surging. In a decade when every American car was trying to be a brougham, Olds had finely honed exactly that kind of offering - it was to the 1970s as Pontiac’s performance image was to the 1960s. The new 98 was no doubt buoyed by the huge success of the Cutlass and swelled Oldsmobile sales overall. Early on, it came with Olds’ 350 and 403 Gas V8s. Rock tough and plush, even in the era of emissions they were powerful and durable cars. In 1978, a new engine was added - the optional LF9 Diesel 350 V8. About 1 in 7 buyers chose the LF9 in 1979, which could return 23 MPG in a big 2-ton car. The LF9 was not, as some believe, a converted gas engine. It used its own nodular iron block even if it shared some things - like head bolt locations and other design features - with the Gas 350. It was noisy, slow, and sooty but when OPEC II hit in 1979, MPG was suddenly the most important factor - LF9 popularity surged. But the engine wasn’t quite cooked. Famously, former GM engineer Darrel Sand, a GM patent holder since 1960, urged his bosses not to put it into production for fear it wasn’t durable - and it wasn’t. LF9s that survive today are generally cared for, but by 1983 thousands of buyers had bonded together in class-action lawsuits against GM over the LF9. 1980 hit the 98 hard but sales recovered to over 130K in 1983 before tailing off in 1984. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-kXuO-lYeD/?igshid=hwbd8p8qv47f

I’m going to try my hardest to avoid Aaliyah’s 4 page letter here. Lol, take that as a warning that this may be a long post! For starters anyone who knows me knows my deeply rooted love for cars! More specifically, Older/Vintage rides, custom or heavily modified; Lowriders being at the very top of my list if not the top spot all together.  I was 14 years old when one of my homeroom Classmates at Cardinal Spellman brought me a Lowrider Magazine to look at because of the way I was always pretending my desk was a lowrider. Lmao! In fact I’m sure I still have the issue stashed somewhere in my mothers house. It was that issue (Ironically with a dark colored Cadillac Brougham on the cover) that I laid eyes on quite possibly the most gorgeous car ever made! The 1964 Chevy Impala! (Chills!!) From that day on it would become my dream car.  Fast forward to present day:  For longer than I can remember I’ve been wanting to shoot with any lowrider and a girl in a dope wardrobe. But Lowriders are a little harder to come by on the east coast. However, I got lucky and found a 64 Impala, (same color and all as the one I fell in love with in the magazine all those years ago,) in Brooklyn while scrolling through Instagram some months ago. I reached out to the owner and he was willing to let me use the car, but when the moment came, the car had other plans. I couldn’t be mad at all. I mean its a 55 year old car, those things have a lot of emotions, and every car guy out there knows this! But it did leave me in somewhat of a tight spot. So I had to scramble to find a replacement. That’s where my boy Kris comes in! Kris is one of those guys in the car game that knows everybody! He’s also a fellow photographer. I told him I needed a lowrider, It needed to be in NYC or in Jersey where he’s from. In the matter of seconds he went through his mental roladex and gave me a name! It was Roc. Roc has a gorgeous 1983 Cadillac with the Big Gold grille! I didn’t waste any time reaching out to him to ask if he’d be willing to provide his car for the background of my shoot. He agreed and not only showed up, but brought his brother with him! I was geeked to say the least. The model who I was originally going to shoot ended up not being available for the weekend I secured the car. So yet another scramble for a new mode began! Lol.  I reached out to a good friend, Celina. She told me that she was good on Sunday and with that confirmation, it was time to pack up the lighting equipment and the camera bag and head to Jersey for a shoot that I did in my head a whole decade ago!! And that’s how the shoot came together.  I can’t thank Celina enough! On what felt like the hottest September day ever, she toughed it out in a full length fur coat that I borrowed from Che and black stockings. Super huge Shout Out to her. Also, huge shout out to Roc and his brother Mook from ‘The Crew’ Car Club for bringing out these gorgeous slabs!  And last  but most certainly not least, thanks to my main man! My brother Rudy, who not only played my assistant, but even went as far as wiping my sweat for me, lol. Had me feeling like Diddy out there! Lmao! Thank You to all of ya! I couldn’t have pulled it off without ya! I’m very proud with how this one turned out   Muse: Celina (@Celina_V) 1979 Cadillac Coupe DeVille: Mook (@TheCrewCarClub) 1983 Cadillac Coupe DeVille: Roc (@RocDeVille

This is a 1980 Fleetwood Brougham By Cadillac. In 1983, my oldest bought one that looked EXACTLY like this! It had a diesel engine, a crushed velvet navy blue interior with ALL the bells and whistles. At 9 years of age, I was smitten! I'm glad that I had a chance to drive it for about a year and some months when I was 18. Then I got my own car. It would be nice to find one like it just to have it. #Cadillac_Dreams https://www.instagram.com/p/B3DXi3gF0m5T73pFnTHjTS9f3uFX9cmglIIliM0/?igshid=160h46zqw3soq
