‘Babar’ Heir And Author Laurent De Brunhoff Dies At Age 98

“Babar” author Laurent de Brunhoff, who revived his father’s popular picture book series about an elephant-king and presided over its rise to a global, multimedia franchise, has died. He was 98.

De Brunhoff, a Paris native who moved to the U.S. in the 1980s, died Friday at his home in Key West, Florida, after being in hospice care for two weeks, according to his widow, Phyllis Rose.

De Brunhoff was the eldest of three sons born to Jean de Brunhoff and Cecile de Brunhoff, a painter. Babar was created when Cecile de Brunhoff, the namesake for the elephant’s kingdom and Babar’s wife, improvised a story for her kids.

“My mother started to tell us a story to distract us,” de Brunhoff told National Geographic in 2014. “We loved it, and the next day we ran to our father’s study, which was in the corner of the garden, to tell him about it. He was very amused and started to draw. And that was how the story of Babar was born. My mother called him Bebe elephant (French for baby). It was my father who changed the name to Babar. But the first pages of the first book, with the elephant killed by a hunter and the escape to the city, was her story.”

Remembering actress DOROTHY MACKAILL today on her birthday.

March 4, 1903

Born in England, but living most of her life in the U.S., Mackaill ran away from her Yorkshire home to London, in hopes of having a career on stage. Persuaded to move to NYC, she made friends with Nita Naldi and Marion Davies, and became a 'Ziegfeld Girl’ at age 17.

She was a WAMPAS Baby Star in 1924, in the same class as Clara Bow. She made her first of dozens of silent films in 1920, and made a smooth transition into talkies, starring in over two dozen movies in the Pre-Code era 1929 to 1934.

Her co-stars included such like: Anna May Wong, John Barrymore, Bebe Daniels, Lon Chaney, Noah Beery, Colleen Moore, George O'Brien, among dozens of others. Mackaill was the female lead, with a young Humphrey Bogart, in 1932's "Love Affair", before retiring in 1937 to care for her ailing mother.

From 1955 until her death in 1990, she lived as an unofficial "artist in residence" at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu - even appearing in two episodes of "Hawaii Five-O", in 1976 and 1980.

Mackaill married three times, and had no children, passing away in 1990 in Hawaii at age 87.

yes i absolutely can!

bebe has the same title listed in her twitter bio, and really it's because she earned it for her lifetime achievements in the field of dance and for her work on sweet charity (1986) and chicago (1996), for which she won two respective tony's for the both of them, as well as for multiple musical revues including fosse (2001), upstairs at o'neals (1982) and here lies jenny (2004). i couldn't tell you precisely what year she was honoured, but if i were to guess probably ~ mid-2000's.

for context, ziegfeld girls were largely chorus girls and showgirls who worked for florenz ziegfeld and his theatrical shows — bebe was largely a chorus girl as well very early on in her career, working in shows like a chorus line (1980), little me (1981) and west side story, (albeit for their europe tour, but did it between a chorus line and little me.)

Me estaba dando nauseas regulares, comía mucho menos es estos dos últimos meses...después de que te fuiste ¿Por qué necesitaba comer si él no está?
