Richard Bernstein’s iconic, technicolor Interview Magazine covers immortalized the glitterati of the 70s and 80s and embodied the pop art aesthetic.
Twenty original mixed-media works and four limited edition prints are currently on view at NeueHouse Madison Square. 'The Interview Magazine Covers', 1972-1989: Richard Bernstein’s Portraits of Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine Bernstein’s Interview covers featured the era’s brightest stars—Cher, Mick Jagger, Diana Ross, Fran Lebowitz, to name a few—and are often mistaken for the work of Warhol, whose name splashed across the magazine’s masthead. But it was their collaboration that created the magazine’s singular look.

How Richard Bernstein Created Interview Magazine’s Iconic 1980s Covers

A new exhibition in New York showcases the work of Richard Bernstein, who immortalised Cher, Stevie Wonder, Fran Lebowitz and more on the cover of Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine

Who but Richard Bernstein (1931-2002) could create portraits for the cover of Interview that embodied the spirit of Andy Warhol’s pop art empire with a perfect blend of glamour and panache?
The consummate insider, Bernstein cut a dashing silhouette among the jet-setting circles in New York, London and Paris, his beguiling beauty matched by his intoxicating ability to transform luminaries like Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Grace Jones into glittering icons.
14Richard Bernstein’s Portraits for Interview Magazine The new exhibition, The Interview Magazine Covers, 1972-1989: Richard Bernstein’s Portraits for Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine, celebrates the artist’s indelible influence on the culture of celebrity chic, which continues to captivate the world half a century later. Featuring portraits of Cher, Mick Jagger, Peter Beard, Stevie Wonder and Fran Lebowitz, the exhibition brings together 24 portraits from the full collection of 189 that illuminate Bernstein and Warhol’s signature collaboration during the golden age of magazines.
Bernstein’s arrival at the magazine signalled a new era of print: one infused with the pomp of Hollywood, the prestige of fine art and the whimsy of fashion.
Every month, his tantalising portraits dominated newsstands, the oversized tabloid announcing itself in signature lipstick scrawl, and often mistaken for the hand of Warhol himself.
Working with editor Bob Colacello, art director Marc Balet and photographers like Bill King, Francesco Scavullo, Albert Watson, Greg Gorman and Matthew Rolston, Bernstein transformed a classic silver gelatin print into a masterpiece of paint, airbrush, gouache and collage.
Tumblr media
Warhol was well aware of Bernstein’s gifts, and more than willing to lean upon them when necessary.
“Fred brought in the pictures of Liza and they were horrible,” he said in the 8 August 1979 entry of The Andy Warhol Diaries. “
I mean, they were clear and sharp, but Liza’s not fat and they made her look fat, and like a drag queen. The expressions were all wrong, too. Richard Bernstein’s going to have to do a big creative job on them for the Interview cover.”

And Bernstein did exactly this with the grace and elegance of a visionary.
Born on Halloween 1931, his talents were evident from a young age and nurtured by his mother, a classically trained pianist.
“My grandparents were very glamorous, beautiful people themselves and I think Richard always carried that with him,” says Rory Trifon, the artist’s nephew and President of the Estate of Richard Bernstein.
Tumblr media
From the outset, Bernstein was destined for greatness as he took centre stage with his very first New York solo exhibition in 1965, where he met Warhol.
Tumblr media
The two recognised each other as kindred spirits and forged a bond that would continue until Warhol’s death.
After travels to Paris and London, Bernstein returned to New York and settled into his new digs in the former grand ballroom of the legendary Chelsea Hotel in 1968, where he lived and worked until his death at 62 in 2002.
Bernstein readily fit into the eclectic mélange of artists, eccentrics, and outcasts who called the Chelsea home, while making his way through the world of fashion with then-girlfriend Berry Berenson, granddaughter of Elsa Schiaparelli, and later introduced Berenson to her future husband, actor Anthony Perkins.
A regular at Max’s Kansas City and Studio 54, he did as much seeing as he did being seen, giving him an intuitive understanding of the spirit of the times.
Richard Bernstein’s Portraits for Interview Magazine Warhol Grace Jones, October 1984
Equally comfortable at West Village leather bars and society dinners at the Plaza Hotel, Bernstein moved fluidly through different worlds, developing an exquisite sensitivity to the people he encountered along the way.
“Richard intimately knew the people on the cover. He was friends with them, and you can see his love coming through in the artwork,” says Trifon, who points to Bernstein’s relationship with Grace Jones, which extended into their collaboration on multiple album covers.
But to Trifon, there was a Bernstein no one else knew: that of Uncle Richard, the devoted family man.
“We were a very close family growing up and saw each other every Saturday, on the Sabbath at my grandparents’ place on Long Island,” Trifon remembers. “They lived in a condo development with beautiful grounds and we would always go for walks with Richard that ended at a willow tree. One particular day, he had hung all these crystals on the willow branches, so that by the time we arrived, there were rainbows all over the floor of the forest. It was an incredibly wonderful moment.”
The Interview Magazine Covers, 1972-1989: Richard Bernstein’s Portraits for Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine is on show at at NeueHouse Madison Square in New York until 30 June 2024.

DJ Cassidy & Shaggy Debut "If You Like Pina Coladas" Featuring Rayvon

DJ Cassidy & Shaggy Debut "If You Like Pina Coladas" Featuring Rayvon
An all-star collaboration between DJ Cassidy, Shaggy, and Rayvon brings the sunshine this season with “If You Like Pina Coladas.” In their unique interpretation of Rupert Holmes’ 1979 Billboard number one pop classic “Escape (The Pina Colada Song),” renowned deejay, producer, and curator DJ Cassidy, and diamond selling Reggae icon, Shaggy, unite for a feel-good refresher course in summer celebration, destined to be a new standard for years to come. The song and video will be available on all platforms June 30th, from VP Records / Ranch Entertainment / Club Paradise Records.
DJ Cassidy & Shaggy Feat. Rayvon – If You Like Pina Coladas
The record is the brainchild of DJ Cassidy who first united with Shaggy and Rayvon in 2022 on his groundbreaking television series, “Pass The Mic,” for a rendition of Shaggy and Rayvon’s 2001 number-one megahit “Angel.” DJ Cassidy and Shaggy have since collaborated with “Pass The Mic Live!” at Austin City Limits for Formula 1 in 2022 and join forces again now to release their new single.
“After Shaggy and Rayvon closed out the Reggae edition of ‘Pass The Mic’ with ‘Angel,’ I was inspired to recreate that magic with a new anthem that would channel the spirit, energy, and emotion of their last prolific collaboration,” explains DJ Cassidy. “I had always dreamed of reinterpreting Rupert Holmes’ summertime classic, and I knew then that Shaggy and Rayvon would be the perfect voices to bring that vision to reality. I am so honored to unite with them for this iconic party in paradise.” DJ Cassidy then recruited acclaimed Reggae producer, iLL Wayno, to join forces with him and Shaggy to produce the genre-blending music for what became, “If You Like Pina Coladas.”
The accompanying music video pays homage to the 1989 cult comedy film, “Weekend At Bernie’s,” and sees DJ Cassidy take on the hilarious role of “deceased party host” Bernie, originally played by actor Terry Kiser, who makes a special cameo in the video by reuniting with his original co-star, Jonathan Silverman, who also appears. The video was directed by Joe Labisi and filmed on location on Miami Beach in collaboration with Malibu®, the go-to brand for Piña Coladas.

Different Editions of D&D
Dungeons and Dragons has been around for close to 50 years with the first edition of the TTRPG being released in 1974 and is sometimes considered the 0th edition of D&D. The first edition of the game was split into three rulebooks; Men & Magic, Monsters & Treasures and The Underworld & Wilderness. Compared to the rest of the editions that came after, the first one seems like the bare bones of the game, as it had only three classes available as well as only four races available to play. Players had the options of human, elf, dwarf and hobbit, who could be a fighting-man, magic-user or a cleric. These options couldn’t be mixed and matched all too much, however, as some classes were limited to some of the races, with human having the least limitations to what class they could be. Much like the other editions of Dungeons & Dragons, the combination of class and race can offer advantages and disadvantages while playing. Alignment at this stage is limited to three; Law, Neutral and Chaotic, in later editions it gets expanded into a grid with those three on one axis, and Good, Neutral and Evil on the other axis. The way that a character’s statistics are determined are by a dice being rolled (the handbook mentions just dice, but judging that the example statistics are close to that of the fifth edition, I assume that they are using a six sided dice) three times, with the results of each roll being added up. For example if I rolled a five, another five, and a one, then one of the statistics for my character would be an eleven. This is done six times for Strength, Constitution, Wisdom, Intelligence, Dexterity and Charisma. The maximum character level in this edition is sixteen and the maximum spell level was six. Armour Class or AC was more limited here, generally only spanning from 2-9 in descending order of effectiveness. An AC of 2 was the best and an AC of 9 was the same as having no armour on at all.
Tumblr media
The next edition to be released was Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, or AD&D between the years of 1977 and 1979. Because it was too expensive at the time to release the entirety of the book collection at once, they were released periodically over the span of three years which caused some confusion on how the game was supposed to be played. This ‘edition’ was designed to be more complex than the original (more for the hardcore players than the beginners), as well as adding more into the game. A multitude of classes were added, such as; paladin, thief, druid, monk, assassin, bard, ranger and illusionist, as well as the change of the alignment chart from the three options to the aforementioned nine. Furthermore, additional character races were added, them being; gnomes, half-elves, half-orcs and hobbits being renamed to halflings. The way a character’s statistics are determined is supposedly up to the Dungeon Master according to the handbook, but the parameters of these characteristics are 3-18 which would suggest that rolling a six sided dice three times is most likely the most common option as it is mentioned in the first edition’s rulebook. While eighteen is the overall maximum a characteristic can be, that itself can vary depending on the race, class and gender of a character. For example a human’s strength can be eighteen, but a halfling’s strength is capped at seventeen. Other characters have a different minimum as well, such as a monk having to have a minimum of fifteen for their strength. The AC in this edition was kept roughly the same, except it could now go into the negatives if it was strong enough. From here on out, Dungeons & Dragons is split between ‘Advanced’ and ‘Basic’.
Tumblr media
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Second Edition or AD&D 2E was released in 1989 and was designed to take the overly complicated rules of the first AD&D and make them more simplified and player-friendly. This edition still uses the same alignment chart, the same way of determining character abilities or statistics (three six sided dice being rolled) however something of mild interest is that there is no half-orc as a playable race in the handbook unlike the previous edition while everything else appears to be present. This handbook is notably laid out in a much more readable manner than the previous two and it definitely lives up to it’s intention of being easier to understand than it’s predecessor. Another reason for the creation of this addition was because the mention of demons was supposedly having the game be viewed by some as a form of ‘devil worship’ and thus any mention of demons or devils were replaced by less threatening alternatives to try and clear up this panic. This is where the main focus of the game was shifted from battles to more of a teamwork centric adventure in an attempt to make the game more ‘friendly’ to audiences of teens and up. Additional things that were changed were proficiencies now being an official part of the rules but still being optional, movement being measured in feet and some changes of the armour class (AC) and critical hits. The armour classes now vary from ten to minus ten, with ten being the worst and minus ten being the best, each player now also has something called THAC0 which means ‘To Hit Armour Class 0′. Say if a player had a THAC0 of thirteen, that is the minimum that they need to roll on a twenty sided dice to land a hit on something that has an AC of zero. The way to work out what number needs to be rolled to land a hit on something is to subtract the AC of the opponent with the THAC0 of the player, so if a creature has an AC that is in the negatives then it needs to be added as it is a double minus. For example, an opponent with an AC of three would require a roll of at least ten from our example player with a THAC0 of thirteen, while an opponent with an AC of minus five would need a roll of at least eighteen to be hit. I’ve only played Dungeons & Dragons in the fifth edition which has a simpler system for the AC, so this took a while to get to grips with.
Tumblr media
The third edition of Dungeons & Dragons was released in 2000, with the third and a half edition being released three years later in 2003 which was a polished version of 3E following player feedback. D&D 3E was where the distinction between ‘Basic’ and ‘Advanced’ was dropped so the game was just Dungeons & Dragons in general as a whole. The Armour Class was changed to be less long-winded and now works in ascending order as opposed to the descending order that it had been in for the entire time up until this point. Furthermore, the AC no longer goes into the negatives, and an AC of 10 is now considered to be the baseline. The THAC0 was thankfully removed, so there is no more maths to figure out when attacking something, just a stated number for the player to achieve. The D20 was now pushed more into the spotlight as the main dice to roll for most actions, and ability modifiers now had a more simplified formula of (X-10)/2 rounded down to follow as opposed to the more complex one it had previously. Death saving throws have now been reduced to three strikes as opposed to the previous five, and now focus more of the defense aspect than attacking. The limit for character levels was also increased as well as additions and modifications to the classes, the Sorcerer class was added and the Thief class was changed to the Rogue (Rogue was already in the game but as a sub-genre of Thief along with Bard, they are now independent classes). Additionally, at this stage, restrictions on what race and what class a player could be have been lifted, so there is more creative freedom when making a character. Another thing to note is that the half-orc seems to have been re-added to the game at this point. It was also around the release of 3.5E that Homebrew became more well known as it earned it’s name, however this likely existed for much longer. This edition is still popular today despite two other editions being released after.
Tumblr media
Dungeons & Dragons 4E was released only 5 years after 3.5E in 2008, because of this, a lot of people were reluctant to switch over however this was not the only reason for this. 4E is very clearly combat based, and most thought that it was being pushed to mimic other rising games at the time and consequently losing the core of what D&D was in the process. Using miniatures was seen as less optional and more compulsory, with the sale of blind bags of miniatures and putting emphasis that players had to spend more and more money in order to play the game when previously it could have been done with a set of the rules, dice and paper and pen.  Other things of note are that the half-orc seems to once again be removed from the game, while three new races were added; dragonborn, tiefling and eladrin. Another noticeable difference is the classes; Druid, Barbarian, Bard and Sorcerer have all been removed and the additional classes of Warlock and Warlord being added. As someone whose list of D&D characters all fall under the four classes that were removed and no other classes, it is very easy to see a few of the reasons why people didn’t take too kindly to the release of this edition. Thankfully this edition of D&D didn’t stay as the most recent one for too long.
Tumblr media
Dungeons & Dragons 5E was released in 2012, only four years after the release of 4E. The fifth edition restored D&D to what it originally was before combat was attempted to be pushed as the main focus. Bard, Barbarian, Sorcerer and Druid have all been re-added as classes, with Warlord being removed. While there are base races that are mentioned in the handbook (human, elf, half-elf, half-orc, dwarf, gnome, halfling, tiefling, dragonborn) a player can play as whatever they like as long as that creature has the necessary statistics present to fill in the character sheet (proficiencies, etc). For example, D&D Beyond has a wider selection of races to choose from (without paying, a large amount of the options cost money) such as aarakocras, genasi and goliaths. There is a much longer explanation on how this edition works in an earlier post.

Cancelled 6/21/90
Alexander Brodsky
Ilya Utkin
Cancelled 6/21/90 by Alexander Brodsky and Ilya Utkin, is the new publication of their defaced iconic works. Produced in between 1979 and 1989, the 29 etchings, a series of visionary architectural proposals submitted to national and international competitions in opposition to the Soviet architecture of the time, are the founding artworks of the Russian architectural movement “Paper Architecture”. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 and the collapse of the Soviet system, the engraved copper plates travelled to USA for the production of a limited commercial edition of the works, which requested for the original printing plates to be destroyed. From Autumn 1989 to Spring 1990, from Communism to Capitalism, the mutilated etchings bare the mark of that transition. In Cancelled 6/21/90, published by l’Esprit de l’Escalier, the deep diagonal trench is the cancellation of the artwork as much as the creation of a new one. [publisher’s note]
The scale of it is around a1 really massive! this is just a small version, but in these massive etchings they create scenes and so much ambition- one of my favourites is the long dinner table on top of a skyscraper with the fuming city below

U2 “All I Want Is You” UK limited edition 7″ tin (1989)
I’ll admit, I had more than my fair share of Bono and company. They were inescapable in the Eighties and continued scoring a consistent plethora of victories in the Nineties until their difficulty-era in 1997′s Pop. “All I Want Is You” came into play for me years after its’ initial release through a random play from New York’s Z100. A nice surprise from them, as this single became my most-visited one of theirs. Why? The right place, the right time, the right people. That’s how we play the game here.
15,000 limited-edition copies of “All I Want Is You” came in a sealed tin and numbered; all from the UK. It’s nowhere near the magnitude of Public Image Ltd.’s Box (1979), but we can’t help to mention simply because.

An overview of Trump’s numerous ties to Russia
Trump was over a billion in debt and the Russians bailed him out.
► Trump was first compromised by the Russians in the 80s. In 1984, the Russian Mafia began to useTrump real estate to launder money. In 1987, the Soviet ambassador to the United Nations, Yuri Dubinin, arranged for Trump and his then-wife, Ivana, to enjoy an all-expense-paid trip to Moscow to consider possible business prospects. Only seven weeks after his trip, Trump ran full-page ads in the Boston Globe, the NYT and WaPO calling for, in effect, the dismantling of the postwar Western foreign policy alliance. The whole Trump/Russian connection started out as laundering money for the Russian mob through Trump's real estate, but evolved into something far bigger.
► In 1984, David Bogatin — a convicted Russian mobster and close ally of Semion Mogilevich, a major Russian mob boss — met with Trump in Trump Tower right after it opened. Bogatin bought five condos from Trump at that meeting. Those condos were later seized by the government, which claimed they were used to launder money for the Russian mob. (NY Times, Apr 30, 1992)
► Felix Sater is a Russian-born former mobster, and former managing director of NY real estate conglomerate Bayrock Group LLC located on the 24th floor of Trump Tower. He is a convict who became a govt cooperator for the FBI and other agencies. He grew up with Michael Cohen--Trump's former "fixer" attorney. Cohen's family owned El Caribe, which was a mob hangout for the Russian Mafia in Brooklyn. Cohen had ties to Ukrainian oligarchs through his in-laws and his brother's in-laws. Felix Sater's father had ties to the Russian mob. This goes back more than 30 years.
► Trump was $4 billion in debt after his Atlantic City casinos went bankrupt. No U.S. bank would touch him. Then foreign money began flowing in through Bayrock (mentioned above). Bayrock was run by two investors: Tevfik Arif, a Kazakhstan-born former Soviet official who drew on bottomless sources of money from the former Soviet republic; and Felix Sater, a Russian-born businessman who had pleaded guilty in the 1990s to a huge stock-fraud scheme involving the Russian mafia. Bayrock partnered with Trump in 2005 and poured money into the Trump organization under the legal guise of licensing his name and property management.
► In July 2008, the height of the housing bust, Trump sold a mansion in Palm Beach for $95 million to Dmitry Rybolovlev, a Russian oligarch. Trump had purchased it four years earlier for $41.35 million. The sale price was nearly $54 million more than Trump had paid for the property. Again, this was the height of the recession when all other property had plummeted in value.
► Semion Mogilevich was the brains behind the Russian Mafia. Mogilevich operatives have been using Trump real estate for decades to launder money. That means Russian Mafia operatives have been part of his fortune for years. Many of them owned condos in Trump Towers and other properties. They were running operations out of Trump's crown jewel.
► From Craig Unger's AMA: "Early on, a source told me that all this was tied to Semion Mogilevich, the powerful Russian mobster. I had never even heard of him, but I immediately went to a database that listed the owners of all properties in NY state and looked up all the Trump properties. Every time I found a Russian sounding name, I would Google, and add Mogilevich. When you do investigative reporting, you anticipate drilling a number of dry holes, but almost everyone I googled turned out to be a Russian mobster. Again and again. If you know New York you don't expect Trump Tower to be a high crime neighborhood, but there were far too many Russian mobsters in Trump properties for it to be a coincidence."
► So many Russians bought Trump apartments at his developments in Florida that the area became known as Little Moscow. The developers of two of his hotels were Russians with significant links to the Russian mob. The late leader of that mob in the United States, Vyacheslav Kirillovich Ivankov, was living at Trump Tower
► According to a Bloomberg investigation (3/16/2017) into Trump World Tower, “a third of units sold on floors 76 through 83 by 2004 involved people or limited liability companies connected to Russia and neighboring states.”
► In 2013, Federal agents busted an “ultraexclusive, high-stakes, illegal poker ring” run by Russian gangsters out of Trump Tower. They operated card games, illegal gambling websites, and a global sports book and laundered more than $100 million. A condo directly below one owned by Trump reportedly served as HQ for a “sophisticated money-laundering scheme” connected to Semion Mogilevich.
► The Russia Mafia is part and parcel of Russian intelligence. Russia is a mafia state. That is not a metaphor. Putin is head of the Mafia. So the fact that they have been operating out of the home of the president of the United States is deeply disturbing.
► Rudy Giuliani famously prosecuted the Italian mob while he was a federal prosecutor, yet the Russian mob was allowed to thrive. Now he's deeply entwined in the business of Trump and Russian oligarchs. Giuiani appointed Semyon Kislin to the NYC Economic Development Council in 1990, and the FBI described Kislin as having ties to the Russian mob. Of course, it made good political sense for Giuliani to get headlines for smashing the Italian mob.
► A lot of Republicans in Washington are implicated. Boatloads of Russian money went to the GOP--often in legal ways. The NRA got as much as $70M from Russia, then funneled it to the GOP. The Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee lead by McConnell got millions from Leonard Blavatnik. In the 90s, the Russians began sending money to top GOP leaders, like Speaker of the House Tom Delay. Craig Unger's book alleges that most of the GOP leadership has been compromised by RU money.
► At the Cityscape USA’s Bridging US and the Emerging Real Estate Markets Conference held in Manhattan, on September 9, 10, and 11, 2008, Donald Trump Jr. was frank about the tide of Russian money supporting the family business, saying "...And in terms of high-end product influx into the US, Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets."
► Eric Trump told golf reporter James Dodson in 2014 that the Trump Organization was able to expand during the financial crisis because “We don’t rely on American banks. We have all the funding we need out of Russia.”
► Russian oligarchs co-signed Trump’s Deutsche bank loans.
Trump now gleefully takes cues from Putin:
► At the end of 2018, Putin and his allies started making a strong push for a resolution that would justify their country’s 1979 invasion of Afghanistan and reverse an 1989 vote backed by Mikhail Gorbachev that condemned it. The Putinists’ goal was to pass the resolution by Feb. There is no one on this side of the Atlantic who thinks the USSR was justified in invading Afghanistan. And out of nowhere, on January 2nd, Trump came out strongly supporting Russia's 1979 invasion of Afghanistan.
► Trump went against American intelligence on North Korean missiles. He told the FBI he didn't believe their intelligence because Putin told him otherwise. “I don't care, I believe Putin"
► Trump met in secret with Putin at the G20 summit in November 2018, without note takers. 19 days later, he announced a withdrawal from Syria. As a note, Trump conducted FIVE completely private meetings and conferences with Putin, and has gone to great lengths to prevent literally anyone, even people in his administration, from learning what was discussed.
► Trump refused to enforce sanctions legally codified into law - and in some cases reversed standing sanctions on Russian companies.
► He has denounced his own intelligence agencies in a press conference with Putin on election meddling - and publicly endorsed Putin's version of events.
► Trump pulled out of the INF treaty with no explanation, which allows Putin to create long-range hypersonic missiles that threaten Europe with impunity. The US already has all the weaponry that the INF would ban the development of, so this offers us literally nothing, while allowing Russia to develop powerful new weapons to challenge our allies.
► Demanded Russia get invited back into G7
► Pushed the CIA to give American intelligence to the Kremlin.
► Withdrew from the Open Skies treaty
► Received intelligence in 2019 that Russia was paying bounties for dead American soldiers, and hasn't done anything about it by the time of this writing.
► Announced troop withdrawal from Germany (America's missile defense from Russia and forward operating base against Russian aggression)
► And of course, Trump continues to threaten to pull out of NATO, a move so catastrophically stupid, so inconceivably cosmically myopic, I truly can't express the profundity of the idiocy. Suffice to say, pulling out of NATO would be like the only guy in a prison yard with a shotgun just throwing it over the fence for absolutely no reason, suddenly giving the people with crude homemade shivs complete power.
► Trump commuted the sentence of Roger Stone, a former advisor convicted several charges, including lying to Congress, witness tampering and obstructing a congressional committee proceeding, as part of former special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.

Cecil Taylor
Tumblr media
Cecil Percival Taylor (March 25, 1929 – April 5, 2018) was an American pianist and poet.
Taylor was classically trained and was one of the pioneers of free jazz. His music is characterized by an energetic, physical approach, resulting in complex improvisation often involving tone clusters and intricate polyrhythms. His technique has been compared to percussion. Referring to the number of keys on a standard piano, Val Wilmer used the phrase "eighty-eight tuned drums" to describe Taylor's style. He has been referred to as being "like Art Tatum with contemporary-classical leanings".
Early life and education
Taylor was raised in the Corona, Queens neighborhood of New York City. As an only child to a middle-class family, Taylor's mother encouraged him to play music at an early age. He began playing piano at age six and went on to study at the New York College of Music and New England Conservatory in Boston. At the New England Conservatory, Taylor majored in composition and arranging. During his time there, he also became familiar with contemporary European art music. Bela Bartók and Karlheinz Stockhausen notably influenced his music.
In 1955, Taylor moved back to New York City from Boston. He formed a quartet with soprano saxophonist, Steve Lacy, bassist Buell Neidlinger, and drummer Dennis Charles. Taylor's first recording, Jazz Advance, featured Lacy and was released in 1956. The recording is described by Richard Cook and Brian Morton in the Penguin Guide to Jazz: "While there are still many nods to conventional post-bop form in this set, it already points to the freedoms in which the pianist would later immerse himself." Taylor's quartet featuring Lacy also appeared at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, which was made into the album At Newport. Taylor collaborated with saxophonist John Coltrane in 1958 on Stereo Drive, now available as Coltrane Time.
1950s and early 1960s
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Taylor's music grew more complex and moved away from existing jazz styles. Gigs were often hard to come by, and club owners found that Taylor's approach of playing long pieces tended to impede business. His 1959 LP record Looking Ahead! showcased his innovation as a creator as compared to the jazz mainstream. Unlike others at the time, Taylor utilized virtuosic techniques and made swift stylistic shifts from phrase to phrase. These qualities, among others, still remained notable distinctions of Taylor's music for the rest of his life.
Landmark recordings, like Unit Structures (1966), also appeared. Within the Unit, musicians were able to develop new forms of conversational interplay. In the early 1960s, an uncredited Albert Ayler worked with Taylor, jamming and appearing on at least one recording, Four, which was unreleased until appearing on the 2004 Ayler box set Holy Ghost: Rare & Unissued Recordings (1962–70).
By 1961, Taylor was working regularly with alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons, who would become one of his most important and consistent collaborators. Taylor, Lyons, and drummer Sunny Murray (and later Andrew Cyrille) formed the core personnel of the Cecil Taylor Unit, Taylor's primary ensemble until Lyons' death in 1986. Lyons' playing, strongly influenced by jazz icon Charlie Parker, retained a strong blues sensibility and helped keep Taylor's increasingly avant garde music tethered to the jazz tradition.
Late 1960s and 1970s
Taylor began to perform solo concerts in the latter half of the 1960s. The first known recorded solo performance was "Carmen With Rings" (59 minutes) in De Doelen concert hall in Rotterdam on July 1, 1967. Two days earlier, Taylor had played the same composition in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Many of his later concerts were released on album and include Indent (1973), side one of Spring of Two Blue-J's (1973), Silent Tongues (1974), Garden (1982), For Olim (1987), Erzulie Maketh Scent (1989), and The Tree of Life (1998). He began to garner critical and popular acclaim, playing for Jimmy Carter on the White House Lawn, lecturing as an artist-in-residence at universities, and eventually being awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1973 and a MacArthur Fellowship in 1991.
In 1976, Taylor directed a production of Adrienne Kennedy's A Rat's Mass at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in the East Village of Manhattan. His production combined the original script with a chorus of orchestrated voices used as instruments. Jimmy Lyons, Rashid Bakr, Andy Bey, Karen Borca, David S. Ware, and Raphe Malik performed in the production as the Cecil Taylor Unit, among other musicians and actors.
1990s and the Feel Trio
Following Lyons' death in 1986, Taylor formed the Feel Trio in the early 1990s with William Parker on bass and Tony Oxley on drums. The group can be heard on Celebrated Blazons, Looking (Berlin Version) The Feel Trio and the 10-disc set 2 T's for a Lovely T. Compared to his prior groups with Lyons, the Feel Trio had a more abstract approach, tethered less to jazz tradition and more aligned with the ethos of European free improvisation. He also performed with larger ensembles and big band projects.
Taylor's extended residence in Berlin in 1988 was documented by the German label FMP, resulting in a box set of performances in duet and trio with a large number of European free improvisors, including Oxley, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Han Bennink, Tristan Honsinger, Louis Moholo, and Paul Lovens. Most of his later recordings have been released on European labels, with the exception of Momentum Space (a meeting with Dewey Redman and Elvin Jones) on Verve/Gitanes. The classical label Bridge released his 1998 Library of Congress performance Algonquin, a duet with violinist Mat Maneri.
Taylor continued to perform for capacity audiences around the world with live concerts, usually playing his favored instrument, a Bösendorfer piano featuring nine extra lower-register keys. A documentary on Taylor, entitled All the Notes, was released on DVD in 2006 by director Chris Felver. Taylor was also featured in a 1981 documentary film entitled Imagine the Sound, in which he discusses and performs his music, poetry, and dance.
2000s
Taylor recorded sparingly in the 2000s, but continued to perform with his own ensembles (the Cecil Taylor Ensemble and the Cecil Taylor Big Band) and with other musicians such as Joe Locke, Max Roach, and Amiri Baraka. In 2004, the Cecil Taylor Big Band at the Iridium Jazz Club was nominated a best performance of 2004 by All About Jazz. The Cecil Taylor Trio was nominated for the same at the Highline Ballroom in 2009. The trio consisted of Taylor, Albey Balgochian, and Jackson Krall. In 2010, Triple Point Records released a deluxe limited-edition double LP titled Ailanthus/Altissima: Bilateral Dimensions of Two Root Songs, a set of duos with Taylor's longtime collaborator Tony Oxley that was recorded live at the Village Vanguard.
In 2013, he was awarded the Kyoto Prize for Music. He was described as "An Innovative Jazz Musician Who Has Fully Explored the Possibilities of Piano Improvisation". In 2014, his career and 85th birthday were honored at the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia with the tribute concert event "Celebrating Cecil". In 2016, Taylor received a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art entitled "Open Plan: Cecil Taylor".
Taylor, along with dancer Min Tanaka, was the subject of Amiel Courtin-Wilson's 2016 documentary film The Silent Eye.
Ballet and dance
In addition to piano, Taylor was always interested in ballet and dance. Taylor's mother, who died while he was young, was a dancer and played the piano and violin. Taylor once said: "I try to imitate on the piano the leaps in space a dancer makes." He collaborated with dancer Dianne McIntyre in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1979, Taylor composed and played the music for a twelve-minute ballet "Tetra Stomp: Eatin' Rain in Space", featuring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Heather Watts.
Poetry
Taylor was a poet, and cited Robert Duncan, Charles Olson, and Amiri Baraka as major influences. He often integrated his poems into his musical performances, and they frequently appear in the liner notes of his albums. The album Chinampas, released by Leo Records in 1987, is a recording of Taylor reciting several of his poems while accompanying himself on percussion.
Musical style and legacy
According to Steven Block, free jazz originated with Taylor's performances at the Five Spot Cafe in 1957 and with Ornette Coleman in 1959. In 1964, Taylor co-founded the Jazz Composers Guild to enhance opportunities for avant-garde jazz musicians.
Taylor's style and methods have been described as "constructivist". Despite Scott Yanow's warning regarding Taylor's "forbidding music" ("Suffice it to say that Cecil Taylor's music is not for everyone"), he praises Taylor's "remarkable technique and endurance", and his "advanced", "radical", "original", and uncompromising "musical vision".
This musical vision is a large part of Taylor's legacy:
Playing with Taylor I began to be liberated from thinking about chords. I'd been imitating John Coltrane unsuccessfully and because of that I was really chord conscious.
Personal life and death
In 1982, jazz critic Stanley Crouch wrote that Taylor was gay, prompting an angry response. In 1991, Taylor told a New York Times reporter "[s]omeone once asked me if I was gay. I said, 'Do you think a three-letter word defines the complexity of my humanity?' I avoid the trap of easy definition."
Taylor moved to Fort Greene, Brooklyn in 1983. He died at his Brooklyn residence on April 5, 2018, at the age of 89. At the time of Taylor's death, he was working on an autobiography and future concerts, among other projects.

Shigeru Miyamoto interview from Micom BASIC (February 1989)
The following is translation of a review of Super Mario Bros. 3 written by Akira Yamashita for the February 1989 issue of Micom BASIC Magazine as the 7th entry in his “Serious Play, Sincere Review” (ホンキでPlay, ホンネでReview) series of articles. It contains commentary by none other than Shigeru Miyamoto himself on the development of the game and its design choices. The review was written a few months after the release of Mario 3 and provide a few insights of not only of how game was received in Japan, but also how it compares to other games available in the market at the time thanks to Mr. Yamashita’s tremendous insights.
There’s also a list of recommended 2-players games for the Famicom that I decided to leave out, but I might translate it too and edited into the article at a later date if there’s demand for it.
Profile of Shigeru Miyamoto
Tumblr media
Name: Shigeru Miyamoto
D.O.B: November 16, 1952 (Sonobe, Kyoto)
Employed by Nintendo Co., Ltd after graduating from the Kanazawa University of Arts on April 1977. He became involved in game development in 1979, working as a character designer in titles such as Space Fever and Space Firebird. Currently works as manager of Nintendo’s R&D department 2.
Work History
Arcade: Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Mario Bros.
Famicom (as director & game designer): Hogan’s Alley, Excitebike, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Wild Gunman, Duck Hunt, Devil World, Spartan X [aka Kung-Fu]
Famicom (as producer): The Adventure of Link, Doki Doki Panic, Super Mario Bros. 3, Shin Onigashima, Famicom Grand Prix: F1 Race, Volley Ball, 3D Hot Rally
The Culmination of The Athletic Game Genre
Athletic Game - This is the term that Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo uses to collectively refer to Super Mario-like games. Specifically it refers to games where slightly large characters move around the screen and jumps serve as the basic action.
Indeed. Mr. Miyamoto’s career has been in a cycle. Ever since Donkey Kong, the first time he ever worked as a game designer, it appears he has an inseparable bond with the athletic game genre.
First of all, any game in which almost all the characters are pushed out to the front (including “athletic games”) can be divided in the following sub-categories depending on the objective the player needs to fulfill in order clear a single stage.
A so-called “chase game” where the purpose is to avoid obstacles and enemies while doing a certain task (such as eating all the dots or reaching the exit). Examples include Pac-Man, Mappy and Chuck’n Pop.
A game where the objective is to defeat a set amount of enemies such as Dig Dug or Bubble Bobble.
Donkey Kong, Mr. Miyamoto’s maiden title, clearly belonged to the first category (although it might be a bit misleading to call it a “chase game”, since the enemies and obstacles only move at a regular pace). I remember it felt pretty fresh at the time to play a game made basically about “jumping”.
The objective of the game was changed for the original Mario Bros., which now felt into the second category. In addition to the Jump from Donkey Kong, Mario Bros. introduced “headbutting” as a new method for defeating enemies - This was very groundbreaking. Usually in a second category game, it was expected for the player to shoot bullets or some kind of equivalent. Substituting that with such an unusual method as “headbutting” was the nature, and significance, of the original Mario Bros. When it comes to games that feature unique methods of defeating enemies, it is surprising rare for titles released prior to Mario Bros. The games that suddenly comes to mind are titles such as Heiankyō Alien, where you dig and fill-in holes, and Libble Rabble, which employs a unique method called “bashishi”. [Translator’s note: The “bashishi” refers to the ability to destroy enemies by using a strand tied to two arrows to enclose them.]
And with Super Mario Bros. released for the Famicom [NES], the ingenuity was further expanded. “Stomping” on enemies has been added as a gameplay element in addition to jumping and headbutting, as well as the option for “Fire Mario” in order to satisfy the desires of players who wanted to shoot bullets. When you consider the type, it’s basically a Category 1 game, but it brings up the image of a Category 2 game to the player, creating a brilliant fusion of both types.
“It’s a type of game that is easily approachable for younger inexperienced players, but can also be played by experienced hardcores without getting tired of it. It’s a fun game, even when you’re just watching other people play from the sidelines. That’s the sort of game that I wanted to create.”
Miyamoto explained why he stepped into the so-called “athletic game” genre (which is a label that I don’t mind using). Super Mario Bros. 3, a game which satisfies such conditions, can be said to be the culmination of the genre.
Some of the Virtues of Super Mario 3
Super Mario Bros. 3 was a huge hit that by the end of 1988 there was even a shortage of supply. I think the following aspects should be noted.
Tumblr media
Caption: A card-flipping minigame similar to concentration. There are many hidden items such as 1UPs, Starmen, coins. Since there are only eight patterns to the distribution of the cards, it’s not impossible to memorize them and get a perfect.
Tumblr media
Caption:
At a first glance it seems like a picture-matching game. You can stop the wheel (?) with the push of a button. If you can memorize the pattern, you can combine the picture into a starman and earn a shocking amount of five extra lives. It’s a perfect aid.
The Spirit of Aiding - Because 1UP mushrooms are plentiful compared to the previous two Mario games, and it’s also easy to get extra lives through minigames such as the picture roulette and concentration, it’s almost hard to get to the Game Over screen. Moreover, I’m glade there are aids that have been employed, such as the technique of picking up consecutive starmen, that take into consideration how well you can play the game comfortably.
The Presentation - Despite being an action game, considerable effort has been put into the game’s presentation in otherwise mundane places. For example, the kings that appear at the end of each world has been transformed into a different animal, in World 4 there levels where you can switch between normal-sized version and a version where all the enemies and environments are larger than usual, and in World 5 there’s a tower that you can climb which takes you to the heavens, where you will find the castle at the end. There’s no limit to the examples I can give. This is a significant improvement over the first two Super Mario games thanks to the increasement of the game’s ROM size. If there is one aspect I think could’ve been improved, was the presentation of the ending could’ve been better.
Scrolling Ideas - It’s rare for a single game to employ various methods of scrolling. There’s free-scrolling with your character, forced-scrolling to the right (and ocassionally diagonally), hi-speed scrolling, ect. The highlights are the flying airships that you enter at the end of each World. Like in Stage 3 of the arcade game R-Type (which also involved moving around a giant airship), you must carefully navigate your character while the stage scrolls through various directions in order to avoid being crush by a wall. While these ideas have been employed by other games in the past, they still deserve merit for the way they’re employed here.
The Music -  I believe the soundtrack to Super Mario Bros. 3 will go down as one of the best in Famicom music’s history. In addition to the sense and atmosphere that makes you feel the uniqueness of each world, what is truly amazing is that they managed to devise a program that makes sound sampling on the Famicom possible. That’s real. Those are the sounds of a real kettledrum and a bassdrum that were recorded through sampling. Following the release of the game, rumors spread that the Super Mario Bros. 3 cartridge employed an integrated chip specifically for the sampled sounds, but Mr. Miyamoto clearly denied such a thing.
Tumblr media
Caption: The king who appears in the castle at the end of Worlds 1 through 7 are each transformed into a different animal. You might find yourself laughing at the unexpected transformations. By the way, do you know what happens if you clear a World as Frog Mario?
The Peculiar Details and the Difficulty Setting
Tumblr media
Caption: The airship from World 8 is said to be one of the most difficult levels in Super Mario 3. Because of its uneven footholds, along with its high-speed scrolling, the results are quite bad. Perhaps you might even need the P-Wings if you can’t clear it normally.
Tumblr media
Caption: Among the enemies with individual patterns in the game, Boo has the most unique concept out of all of them. She only approaches gradually while Mario has his back turned on her. Each of these character establishes have good sense in them.
As mentioned above, Super Mario Bros. 3 has several aspects that are a rank higher than other games. However, when you take into account the game as a whole, it could be said that the secret to its popularity lies in how the details were set. The experts at Nintendo have crafted detailed maps, along with enemy characters that exists mainly to raise the quality of the game, that help motivate players.
Of course, you can’t ignore the perfectly exquisite difficulty setting. When I was playing for the first time, there were many stages where I thought “gah, I hope I don’t have to repeat this again!” Yet, strangely enough, most of the levels can actually be cleared without much of an effort. Although, you could say it depends on how you memorize the level designs, it is at that moment that you truly believe that you’re skilled. It is evident that you gain experience from playing Super Mario Bros. 3 and level-up at a very fast-rate.
Once you’ve become truly skilled, that’s when you start pursuing artistry in your play style. On a certain rough spot, could it be possible to clear it elegantly on the quickest time possible? With that in mind, perhaps the best strategy for certain stages is to aim for a non-stop completion. In fact, if you jump while doing the B-dash, it is possible to stomp on a Goomba and such with dead-on timing.
Tumblr media
Caption: For example, when you’re on top of the T-shaped pies in World 1-2 if you’re run off with the B-dash and do a large jump with a clack, you can step on a Para-Goomba like this. If you’re confident in your skills, you might want to try challenging your friends over who has the faster completion time in certain stages (although, it might be foolish to try this on a forced-scrolling level). You may also want to record your own nonstop gameplays on video to make your own “Super Mario Bros.3 Perfect Strategy Video”.
Mr. Miyamoto comments on the excess that led to such a strange setting being accepted by players
“I believe the reason why our players have support our games to such an extent is because we do our work with the utmost sincerity. ‘Don’t make the consumers feel like they’re lost - That’s our policy. Also we never try to deviate from our original intent, our original concept, even if a similar game is released before finish ours. If you do that, then it will be inevitable are that your game’s settings and balance will be ruined.”
It was through this interview that I’ve come to the realization that Mr. Miyamoto is truly one of Japan’s leading video game designers with his firm grasp on video game development.
The Greatest Theme: 2-Player Simultaneous Play
Tumblr media
Caption: In 2-players mode, if Mario and Luigi enter the same area, the original Mario Bros. will somehow begin play (this is no hoax). You can understand the importance that Mr. Miyamoto is placed on 2-players gameplay.
“The biggest theme of Super Mario Bros. 3 was making a game that was fun for 2 people to play”
I was a bit surprised by Mr. Miyamoto’s statement. I was aware that Super Mario Bros. 3 has a mode where two players take turns between Mario and Luigi. For example, if Mario completes World 1-1, then it’s Luigi’s turn to play World 1-2, which feels a bit odd at first. I’ve never paid much attention to this mode until Mr. Miyamoto mentioned it. What was his purpose for adding such a mode? The following is his answer.
“In Super Mario Bros. 3, I wanted to give players a ‘field where two people can play together’. For example, you can have a skilled play help out his unskilled sister proceed through the game through cooperation, or have a pair of friends compete to see who gets the highest score. Therefore, when playing in 2-players mode, I would be glad if they approach it like a board game and use the whistles to instantly access any of the 8 worlds they like.”
This could indeed be said to be a challenge to create a new 2-players game for Miyamoto, who made one of the biggest 2-players game ever, the original Mario Bros. However, Miyamoto himself was not satisfied with the 2-players play of Super Mario Bros. 3.
Perhaps there are readers who are thinking “Why don’t they just put Mario and Luigi on-screen in Super Mario Bros. at the same time? That’s such a brilliant idea! Maybe I should become a game designer”, but such an idea is short-sighted. Just having Mario and Luigi on-screen at the same time wouldn’t be viable. To be precise, it’s not impossible, but the quality of the game would suffer.
Tumblr media
Figure 1: A situation in 2-players co-op
Let met get into the specifics. Let’s supposed there’s a version of Super Mario Bros. where two players can play simultaneously. Now, consider the situation shown in Figure 1. Mario will naturally try to avoid the Venus Fire Trap by moving towards the right (the direction of the scrolling), but he can’t because Luigi is on the other end of the screen. As a result, a tragedy will occur and Mario will be struck by fire. There’s also the problem that Mario cannot see the enemies that will appear ahead of him since he’s too close to the edge of the screen. In terms of the situation described above, it’s almost impossible to play Super Mario Bros. with two players at the same time, unless forced-scrolling is employed.
Tumblr media
Caption: This is Alien Syndrome, an arcade game by Sega. The gruesomeness of the monsters was nice, but during 2-players mode, I was also concerned on where to scroll as well.
With that said, there has been plenty of free-scrolling multiplayer games in the past ,especially arcade games. Titles such as Alien Syndrome, Ikari Warriors and its sequels, Rock ‘n Rage, Dark Adventure, Quartet, and many more. Anyone who has played this game with partner has likely experienced the frustration of screaming while seeing their character died on-screen because the screen wasn’t scrolling like it should. It can be asserted that these types of multiplayer games are absolutely unreasonable systematically. Multiplayer games are only possible either, with a fixed screen or with auto-scrolling - that’s my theory.
Tumblr media
Caption: Although it was an early Famicom games, Devil World must be seen for its scrolling ideas. When I was told this was a Shigeru Miyamoto game, I was pretty convinced.
On a side-note, one 2-players game that impressed me with its scrolling was Devil World, a previous game by none other than Mr. Miyamoto himself. This was a game where the direction of the auto-scrolling changes as indicated by the devil at the top of the screen. Although one of the game’s flaws is that the logic behind the scrolling couldn’t be understood during a 2-players game, the concept of an auto-scrolling game that changes direction is still impressive even in this age.
What’s Next For Nintendo’s Top Designer?
Usually this would be part where I would mention the aspects of the game in which I was unsatisfied with and come up with suggestions on how to improve them, but unfortunately (or not).
If I may mention a few things, perhaps the game might be too difficult to players who have never played the previous Mario games or the game might take too many hours to complete if you intend on completing it without using warp zones. With that said, it’s a pretty good game when you consider that those are the only flaws I could think of.
Is Mr. Miyamoto, who served as producer of this super game, going to continue making games like this? This is a question that is of the interest of many videogame fans. At the end of this interview, while the answer was a bit abstract, I was still able to get it from him .
“I have been in charge of game direction until now. Of course, I will continue doing so in the future, but when the time is right, I would also like to work on planning out a gameplay system too.”
System planning - While Mr. Miyamoto said this quite bluntly, he seems to have considerable preparedness for it. The fact that most recent games don’t have their gameplay systems designed for them, but rather they simply rearrange existing systems, is a situation that Mr. Miyamoto himself is coming to grasp, even though most players can’t imagined it from their standpoint.
What kind of gameplay system is Mr. Miyamoto thinking of? I’ve asked him for the specifics.
“There are many talented creators involved in other industries such as novel authors and filmmakers. Now if only someone would create a system, or perhaps a field, in which such people could get involved in game development with ease... My dream is to create a point of contact for creators active in fields other than video game development.”
In our current situation, it’s pretty difficult to create an interesting game if you don’t already know anything about videogames to some extent. But perhaps, with some kind of tool or aid, we will see infinite possibilities in the game industry that we’ve ever seen before.
Mr. Miyamoto brought up an RPG that is being developed by Nintendo with the cooperation of writer Mr. Shigesato Itoi, best known for his coverage of Namco’s Family Stadium baseball video game “Please look forward to it” remarks Mr. Miyamoto. [TL’s note: Of course, that RPG would be none other than the original MOTHER, which Mr. Yamashita himself would review in a later issue.]
1989 will be an intense year, not just for the Super Famicom, but Nintendo’s software development department in general. [TL’s note: At the time, the Super Famicom was expected to be released in 1989 in Japan, but it was ultimately delayed to 1990.]
Miyamoto’s History of Athletic Games
Donkey Kong (June 1981, Arcade) - The originator of the athletic game genre, as well as the first game Miyamoto was involved as a game designer. Despite the fixed screen format and simple controls that consists of a joystick for moving and a jump button, the game was rich in its variety that it showed. Perhaps it might had been the first game to ever have a jump button, but I can’t say for sure.
Donkey Kong Jr. (July 1982, Arcade) - The sequel to Donkey Kong featured a bold setting in which the roles of the protagonist and antagonist from the previous game were switched. While the gameplay system remained largely unchanged, the switch to a larger protagonist brought on many new ideas. This has been the only game to ever feature Mario as antagonist.
Mario Bros. (April 1983, Arcade) - A game that brought-in 2-players co-op to the gameplay cultivated by Donkey Kong. Both players can proceed throughout the stages in various ways, whether it is by cooperating with each other or by pulling each others’ legs trying to kill each other. It is considered to be one of the greatest 2-players simultaneous game in history.
Super Mario Bros. (September 1985, Famicom) - The game that served as the turning point for the athletic game genre, expanding from a fixed screen to side-scrolling. It would go on to become the biggest hit game for the Famicom, becoming a huge influence to the industry along with Dragon Quest.
Super Mario Bros. 2 [Japanese version] (June 1986, Famicom Disk) -  A sequel known for its hellish difficulty, it was aimed specifically at players who mastered the first game. The game is filled with many situations in which the levels can only be cleared using advanced techniques. With that said, the gameplay system was almost unchanged from the original. There were many people who bought the Disk System add-on just for this game.
Yume Kojō: Doki Doki Panic (July 1987, Famicom Disk) - A game produced in cooperation with the Fuji TV’s event Yume Kōjō. While the game wasn’t much of a success, many of its ideas would go on to inspire Super Mario Bros. 3. In fact, a graphically modified version was released for the NES in North America as its version of Super Mario Bros. 2.
Super Mario Bros. 3 (October 1988, Famicom) - The third installment of the Super Mario series was developed with the idea of rearranging the original with a much larger ROM size. In addition to the high degree of completeness, we cannot overlook the amount of new ideas that were enthusiastically inserted into the game. The hard work that has put into the game can be felt by its presentation.
Super Mario Bros. 4 (working title) - Scheduled to be released this October as one of the launch titles for the Super Famicom. [TL’s note: The Super Famicom wouldn’t be released in Japan until 1990] Our curiousity over the kind of Super Mario game that this new machine will be capable of is endless. One can only expect as much from Mr. Miyamoto’s skills as a producer.

*What is Rhetoric to Me?*
Tumblr media
https://drive.google.com/file/d/14O-Ge9BoT7hdz3nXbXy4CAcq7bD4tCqH/view?usp=sharing
This essay intends to highlight how my definition of rhetoric changed after taking Comm 380, Rhetorical Traditions. At the beginning of the school year, I believed that rhetoric was “the intentional use of speaking, images, designs, and acting for a persuasive purpose. It can include word order, grammar (punctuation), images, camera angles, word choice and placement. It is also determined by a situation or place.” After taking this class, I believe rhetoric’s scope is much more comprehensive and dynamic than persuasion and uses more styles and nuanced means of communication to reach audiences. The evolution of my definition of rhetoric has been influenced by rhetorical theorists Karlyn Kohrs Campbell, Bonnie Dow, Marie Boor Tonn, Karen A. Foss, Kennth Burke, Rita Felski, and Jurgen Habermas. After considering their contributions to rhetorical theory, I contend that rhetoric is a way of communicating through diverse styles or mediums which seek to push against the symbol systems of dominant ideologies for the emergence of new economic, social, political, and cultural spaces.
Dow and Tonn’s research on the feminine style and Karen A. Foss’ writing on Harvery Milk’s “queer style” inform my definiton by discussing how rhetoricians use multiple styles of speaking to achieve their purpose of creating a “new rhetorical space” (Foss, 79). Within these new spaces,“alternative modes of political reasoning” can emerge (Dow & Tonn, 288). In the context of my definition, utilizing these communication styles empowers and reaches diverse audiences which in turn shifts the conversation from a limiting hegemonic way of thinking and gives those of all backgrounds an opportunity to deconstruct societal systems of power. By extension, allowing “contradictions to exist side by side,” Harvey Milk created a space in 1970’s San Francisco where new possibilities could emerge which allowed him to use his queer identity to connect with unlikely constituents and challenge the rhetorical situation (81). With the emergence of new voices and ways of communicating, rhetors have the ability to deconstruct and challenge hegemonic ways of reasoning and replace them with communication that works to create new spaces of discourse by expanding the possibilities of language and styles of speaking.
My first definition of rhetoric evolved to consider how our words and actions took on significance to form dominant ideologies through symbolism. Before I discuss how rhetoric pushes against dominant ideologies, a discussion of symbolism is necessary. Kenneth Burke theorizes that symbols constitute everything in our society including the framework of our prevailing ideologies (58).  Burke reflects on the prominence of symbols when he writes, “can we bring ourselves to realize . . . just how overwhelmingly much of what we mean by ‘reality’ has been built up for us through nothing but our symbol systems?” (58). Through symbols, humans have created meaning and in effect have given significance to belief systems that dictate their existence. In its best form, rhetoric should be used by groups outside the sphere of influence to deconstruct the symbol systems which work to uphold dominant, limiting ideologies.
Symbolism works in a way that gives privilege to certain populations and in turn creates out groups, or counter-publics. Publics and counterpublics are individuals existing outside of the government who form discursive groups defined by rhetoric (Felski, 164). The “public sphere” was a term first used by Jürgen Habermas to describe a group that was a “historically determined formation” of  “male property owners and the enlightened aristocracy” (164). Considering my definition, the public sphere represents the dominant ideology and rhetoric should be used by various counter-publics, or those seeking access to the public sphere’s privilege to push against the hegemonic, or dominant public. Counter-publics seek to gain access to the public sphere’s privilege by situating themselves in opposition to the institutionalized identity of the public (166). Symbols which rhetoric pushes back against could be those which seek to deny members of counter-publics access to new places of economic, social and political opportunity.
My rhetorical artifact of me playing saxophone from my senior recital is an embodiment of a new space that rhetoric can create when it uses diverse forms of communication which challenges the dominant expression of western classical music, a version of a public sphere. The piece, Le Frêne égaré, is a contemporary work for solo saxophone written in 1979 by French Composer François Rossé. Le Frêne égaré incorporates compositional influences from “non-Western traditions” such as Africa, Asia, and Grece (Even, 18). The piece expresses its non-Western roots by employing many contemporary, or avant-garde techniques, like quarter tones, (notes whose pitches sound in between black and white keys on the piano) multiphonics, (the production of two or more sounds simultaneously) breath sounds, and flutter tonguing. In addition to contemporary techniques, Le Frêne égaré refelcts non-Western influences by transcending time and meter; time signatures (determine time and beat distribution) change frequently in the piece. This freedom allows the performer to “shape gestures and phrases in a personal way without forfeiting complete control” (Even, 18). Le Frêne égaré represents a counter-public of composers, performers and musical styles which have been traditionally shunned from concert halls because their expression of music is not contingent with the Western classical music tradition. However,  Le Frêne égaré and pieces like it allow composers and performers to create new cultural spaces by pushing back against the limiting symbol systems of the Western music tradition.
Much like Harvey Milk redefined the rhetorical situation by allowing “new opportunities to emerge” (Foss, 78), diverse expressions of music reach both diverse and traditional audiences and challenge them to reconsider their symbol systems of what “music” is. Le Frêne égaré allows saxophonists, musicians, and audiences to challenge the primary Western expression of music through utilizing the diverse, expressive, technical and sonic capabilities of the saxophone. When musicians utilize diverse musical languages, they expand and challenge the public’s perception of what music is, thus pushing back against the symbols that construct our perception of music that hinder creative and artistic human potential.
After considering the theorists covered in this class, I believe that when used in the best form, rhetoric is a dynamic tool of social critique and construction that utilizes diverse forms of styles or mediums which seek to challenge the symbol systems of dominant ideologies for the emergence of new economic, social, political, and cultural spaces. When rhetoric fulfills this role, social systems that once hindered human economic, social, political, and creative potential are deconstructed.

TAG Heuer presented the second of five limited-edition TAG Heuer Monaco 1979–1989 timepieces that mark the icon’s 50th anniversary. The birthday celebration took place in Le Mans, France – the setting for the 1971 film Le Mans, in which the Monaco was worn by Steve McQueen. Guests included Steve McQueen’s son, Chad McQueen; five-time winner of Le Mans and driver in the movie Le Mans, Derek Bell; actor, race car driver and brand ambassador Patrick Dempsey; and race car driver, Formula E Champion 2017–18 and brand ambassador Jean-Éric Vergne.
LE MANS, FRANCE – 15 June 2019: Engines revved this weekend in Le Mans, France, where watch aficionados set their sights on the latest Monaco anniversary edition. The setting for the exclusive big reveal couldn’t have been more fitting – in the 1971 film Le Mans, actor and “King of Cool” Steve McQueen sported the iconic timepiece, securing its place in horological history. As a tribute to the Monaco’s cinematic debut, guests – including Steve McQueen’s son, Chad McQueen – enjoyed a special screening of the famous film in the place where it all began.
youtube
Every aspect of the Monaco timepieces design was radical, and went where no other watch had ever gone before in terms of design and technology. Not only was the TAG Heuer Monaco the first ever water-resistant square watch, it was also the first to feature an automatic-winding chronograph movement.
In honour of the Monaco’s 50th anniversary, five limited editions will be successively revealed throughout the year. These new models are inspired by the different decades from 1969 to 2019 and pay tribute to a style icon now more contemporary than ever. The special collector’s editions unveiled in 2019 pay tribute to the Monaco’s timeless design and TAG Heuer’s never-ending innovation.
Patrick Dempsey, Chad McQueen and the TAG Heuer Monaco 1979–1989 Limited Edition
After the unveiling of the first model at the Monaco Grand Prix in May, TAG Heuer was proud to reveal the next limited-edition model celebrating the period from 1979 to 1989 in Le Mans, France. The first model took inspiration from the years 1969 to 1979 – the first decade of the Monaco’s history.

Red-hot racing through the 1980s
TAG Heuer Monaco 1979–1989 Limited Edition
Hot on the heels of the first of the five timepieces, the second model reveals a fiery design with a bold red dial synonymous with cutting-edge design and racing victory. Presented on a black calfskin strap punctured with holes lined in red, this special edition captures the speed and style of the Monaco’s second decade. The stainless-steel model, with its iconic square case, features a red sunray dial and two rhodium-plated subdials with curved edges. Black and white accents on the dial perfectly complement the black-tipped hour and minute hands. The hands and indexes are coated with Super-LumiNova® for improved legibility.
TAG Heuer Monaco 1979–1989 Limited Edition
As with the original, the pushers are on the right of the case while the crown is on the left – an unconventional feature that has distinguished the Monaco over the past 50 years. The caseback of this 1980s-inspired wristwatch is engraved with the “Monaco Heuer” logo as well as “1979-1989 Special Edition” and “One of 169”. Sporting a design inspired by the original model, the stainless-steel caseback has vertical and circular brushed patterns. The case houses the renowned Calibre 11, a modern version of the automatic-winding chronograph movement that made its debut inside the original Monaco in 1969. This watch has been produced in an edition limited to 169 pieces.
Looking back on 50 years of the TAG Heuer Monaco and Calibre 11
When the Heuer Monaco (TAG was not part of the company name at the time) was introduced at simultaneous press conferences in New York and Geneva on 3 March 1969, journalists and watch aficionados around the world were amazed. With its never-before-seen water-resistant square case, the Monaco’s daring and iconic design made it instantly recognisable. The watch’s design was the perfect complement to the advanced technology being presented by the Swiss watchmaker at the time. Developed and commercialised by Heuer, the Calibre 11 was the world’s first automatic-winding chronograph movement.
CEO at the time Jack Heuer believed that this groundbreaking innovation required a design that would demand attention. The Monaco did exactly that.
In 1971, the Monaco was worn by Steve McQueen, the “King of Cool”, in the movie Le Mans.
TAG Heuer and Le Mans
Was it luck or was it destiny? Jack Heuer once explained that the world’s first self-winding chronograph, called the Chronomatic in 1969, was not about luck but rather filling a clear need on the market for chronographs. “But if the Monaco is a first in design, its success is owed almost entirely to luck,” he has said. As the story goes, Jack Heuer sent stopwatches and chronographs to the set for the filming of the movie Le Mans, and he was also able to send six identical Monaco watches (a move made possible by the watch’s poor post-launch sales). It was this watch that was chosen for Steve McQueen to wear. The watch might not have been successful in 1970, but today it is a TAG Heuer icon. Jack Heuer himself has said that he could never have imagined the watch would be as successful and coveted as it is today. He went to the set of Le Mans after the watches had been delivered, but McQueen was not there that day. They never even met!
The paradoxical superstar
Over the past two decades, the Monaco has been closely linked to haute horlogerie with other versions that feature new complications, designs and materials. As it evolves, the Monaco still has the revolutionary spirit that made it both infamous and famous. The complete story behind this icon is told in the new book Paradoxical Superstar, which includes archive excerpts and sketches of the designs and movements. British journalist Nicholas Foulkes, watch expert Gisbert Brunner and American writer Michael Clerizo all contributed chapters that capture the heritage and innovation that defines the Monaco. Underscoring the timepiece’s bond with its namesake city, H. S. H. Prince Albert II of Monaco wrote the book’s foreword.

Her Prophet Speaks: The Six Mothers of The Sisterhood
~I had been planing on an essay about how these six women laid the foundations of The Sisterhood, but it has proved to be a daunting task. And I need to get the first edition of the Liber published. So I'm punting.
I'll write said essay for a later edition. For now, here is the opening text from their respective Wikis with links to same...
Shulamith "Shulie" Firestone (January 7, 1945 – August 28, 2012)[2] was a Canadian-American radical feminist. A central figure in the early development of radical feminism and second-wave feminism, Firestone was a founding member of three radical-feminist groups: New York Radical Women, Redstockings, and New York Radical Feminists.
In 1970, Firestone authored The Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution. Published in September of that year, the book became an influential feminist text.[3]Naomi Wolf said of the book in 2012: "No one can understand how feminism has evolved without reading this radical, inflammatory, second-wave landmark."

Donna J. Haraway (born September 6, 1944) is an American Professor Emerita in the History of Consciousness Department and Feminist Studies Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, United States.[1] She is a prominent scholar in the field of science and technology studies, described in the early 1990s as a "feminist, rather loosely a postmodernist".[2] Haraway is the author of numerous foundational books and essays that bring together questions of science and feminism, such as "A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist-Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century" (1985) and "Situated Knowledges: The Science Question in Feminism and the Privilege of Partial Perspective" (1988).[3][4] She is also a leading scholar in contemporary ecofeminism, associated with post-humanism and new materialism movements.[5][6] Her work criticizes anthropocentrism, emphasizes the self-organizing powers of nonhuman processes, and explores dissonant relations between those processes and cultural practices, rethinking sources of ethics.[7]
Haraway has taught Women's Studies and the History of Science at the University of Hawaii and Johns Hopkins University. Haraway's works have contributed to the study of both human-machine and human-animal relations. Her works have sparked debate in primatology, philosophy, and developmental biology.[8] Haraway participated in a collaborative exchange with the feminist theorist Lynn Randolph from 1990 to 1996. Their engagement with specific ideas relating to feminism, technoscience, political consciousness, and other social issues, formed the images and narrative of Haraway's book Modest_Witness for which she received the Society for Social Studies of Science's (4S) Ludwik Fleck Prize in 1999.[9][10] In September 2000, Haraway was awarded the Society for Social Studies of Science's highest honor, the J. D. Bernal Award, for her "distinguished contributions" to the field.[11] Haraway serves on the advisory board for numerous academic journals, including differences, Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, Contemporary Women's Writing, and Environmental Humanities.

Andrea Rita Dworkin (September 26, 1946 – April 9, 2005) was an American radical feminist and writer best known for her criticism of pornography, which she argued was linked to rape and other forms of violence against women. Her views were widely criticized by liberal feminists and others. At the same time, she maintained a dialogue with political conservatives, and wrote a topically related book, Right-Wing Women. After suffering abuse from her first husband, she was introduced to radical feminist literature, and began writing Woman Hating.
After moving to New York, she became an activist and a writer on several issues, eventually publishing 10 books on feminism.
During the late 1970s and 1980s, Dworkin became known as a spokeswoman for the feminist anti-pornography movement, and for her writing on pornography and sexuality, particularly Pornography: Men Possessing Women (1981) and Intercourse (1987), which remain her two most widely known books. She wrote on pornography from a feminist perspective and in opposition to obscenity law, and she worked with Women Against Pornography and Linda Boreman. She considered the pornography industry to be based on turning women into objects for abuse by men. Dworkin and Catharine MacKinnon developed a legislative approach based on civil rights rather than obscenity to outlaw pornography and allow lawsuits against pornographers for damages, but their efforts were largely unsuccessful. She testified at a federal commission against pornography, leading some stores to withdraw certain magazines from sale, but a court ruled the government's efforts unconstitutional. Critics argued that no causal relationship between pornography and harm to women had been found. In 1992, a Canadian court adapted parts of Dworkin and MacKinnon's theory on sex equality, although Dworkin opposed parts of the court's view. Some sex-positive feminists criticized Dworkin's views as censorious and as denying women's agency or choice in sexual relationships, leading to the so-called feminist sex wars.
Her book Intercourse, which addresses the role of sexual intercourse in society, has been interpreted as opposing all heterosexual intercourse, but Dworkin said it does not and that what she was against was male domination by intercourse. Some critics of Dworkin accused her of supporting incest, and she sued for defamation, but a court did not forbid the criticism. She subsequently wrote much in opposition to incest. She wrote some fiction, some of which was held for a time by Canadian customs authorities before it was released, giving rise to a controversy over whether her support for antipornography law had led to the seizure of her own work. When she said she was drugged and raped in a hotel in 1999, controversy over the truth of the allegations followed. In her later years, she suffered from severe osteoarthritis, which limited her mobility. She died of acute myocarditis at the age of 58.

Long Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School, where she has been tenured since 1990, and the James Barr Ames Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. Valerie Jean Solanas (April 9, 1936 – April 25, 1988) was an American radical feminist and author best known for writing the SCUM Manifesto, which she self-published in 1967, and attempting to murder Andy Warhol in 1968.
Solanas had a turbulent childhood. She said her father regularly sexually abused her and she had a volatile relationship with her mother and stepfather after her parents' divorce. She was sent to live with her grandparents but ran away after being physically abused by her alcoholic grandfather. Solanas came out as a lesbian in the 1950s. After graduating with a degree in psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park, Solanas relocated to Berkeley, California, where she began writing her most notable work, the SCUM Manifesto, which urged women to "overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and eliminate the male sex".[1][2]
Solanas moved to New York City in the mid-1960s. She met pop artist Andy Warhol and asked him to produce her play Up Your Ass. She gave him her script, which she later accused him of losing or stealing. After Solanas demanded financial compensation for the lost script, Warhol hired her to perform in his film, I, a Man, paying her $25. In 1967, Solanas began self-publishing the SCUM Manifesto. Olympia Press owner Maurice Girodias offered to publish Solanas's future writings, and she understood the contract to mean that Girodias would own her writing. Convinced that Girodias and Warhol were conspiring to steal her work, Solanas purchased a gun in early 1968.
On June 3, 1968, she went to The Factory, where she found Warhol. She shot at Warhol three times, the first two shots missing and the third wounding Warhol. She also shot art critic Mario Amaya and attempted to shoot Warhol's manager, Fred Hughes, point blank, but the gun jammed. Solanas then turned herself in to the police. She was charged with attempted murder, assault, and illegal possession of a gun. She was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and pleaded guilty to "reckless assault with intent to harm", serving a three-year prison sentence, including treatment in a psychiatric hospital. After her release, she continued to promote the SCUM Manifesto. She died in 1988 of pneumonia in San Francisco.

The Sisterhood is not in total alignment with the philosophies/ideologies of these six women. In fact a few of them might reject SH in whole or in part. But without their work, SH would not, likely could not, exist.
