Enzo Ferrari was a reluctant convert to mid-engined cars. “The horse doesn’t push the cart along with its nose,” he famously said in 1959. That year he also told engineer Carlo Chiti “Do anything you like to get a victory with a traditional car, because that's where Ferrari's destiny lies.” He believed Ferrari’s road car customers wouldn’t buy cars that weren’t like its racers, but just a few months later, Ferrari had a mid-engine racer, the 246P F1. Alea iacta est, as Julius Caesar would say. Three years later, Ferrari built a mid-engined “road” car, sort of. It was the 250LM, and while nominally a road car, it was really just a racer meant to compete in world sports car racing as a successor to the 250GTO. That didn’t happen thanks to the FIA clamping down on Ferrari’s homologation shenanigans. The famous 250 GTO was, Enzo argued, a version of the 250 SWB Berlinetta. That, he opined, should have meant the requisite number of cars had been built for FIA homologation for sports car racing. That was bending the rules, but the FIA acquiesced (and did similar for some other cars, like the Aston DB4 Zagato). But 1963’s 250P (for “prototype”) sports car, which won LeMans that year, was the future. If Ferrari could make a road version for homologation, it would have an even faster replacement for the GTO. So it was that Ferrari adapted Mario Forghieri’s tube-framed design from the 250P with bigger tubes, more structural bracing, and had Pininfarina clad it in a sleek, sexy shape by Pininfarina. The car went into “production” in early 1964. Enzo claimed that the 250LM was just another derivative of the 250. Since it was transparently not and only 32 would be built in two years, the FIA classified it as a Prototype instead of a sports car, which put it up against no-holds-barred competitors. Enzo banged his fists and threatened to boycott races, but the FIA held firm. Still, the 250LM was a regular race winner even in that advanced class. This 250LM, in the hands of Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory, with an unexpected (and for a long time uncredited) assist from American driver Ed Hugus, won the 1965 24 Hours of LeMans, Ferrari’s last outright LeMans win. Sonoma Speed Festival 2019, is like Goodwood on This Side of the Pond

The first ever Sonoma Speed Festival is coming to Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California on May 30, 2019. The event will feature iconic historic racecars from decades past, from the Brass Era, to early ‘70s Trans Am cars, late ‘80s prototypes, and opportunities for show goers to fully experience not only racing car culture, but local culture as well. Off-track are wine tastings, vehicle simulators and virtual-reality experiences, autographs from racing drivers, live music, and a beer garden.

The event’s distant European cousin, the Goodwood Festival of Speed can be described as an English garden party with music provided by the sweet sounds of F1 cars, boosted V8 drift cars, fire-spitting exotics, and straight-piped vintage race cars, as rather than a four-string quartet. In addition to parade laps, there is a timed hill climb to the top of Goodwood Park, with no safety barriers, or fences.

The Sonoma Speed Festival differs in that it’s on the grounds of a full-fledged racing facility and features regional wares from Northern California. “The team organizing this event have attended the best motoring events in the world and want to bring that world-class level of execution and experience to one of the best race tracks in North America,” said Ryan R. Turri, General Manager of the Sonoma Speed Festival. “We’ve brought in teams that have worked on the most highly regarded automotive events and museums across the globe. This is an opportunity to see the most significant motorsports icons in action while enjoying the luxuries and comfort of a European-style motoring event.”

Sonoma Raceway’s 50th anniversary is this year, and to celebrate, the Trans-Am class will run a race on the track at the festival just as it did back in 1969. Nine other classes which are listed below, will run throughout that Saturday and Sunday. In total over, 220 vehicles are expected to attend the event with special guests to be announced.

The Ferrari 250LM is a special Ferrari, make no mistake. It takes its place alongside the very greatest of the marque, and everyone knows how great the name of Ferrari is. Dean Batchelor's quote: 'Truly an exotic among exotic's is no insubstantial puff. And here's why.   1961 was a major turning point for the Maranello racing team - it was deemed proper, at last, for the engine to sit behind the driver. Those first cars were Dino sports-racers after the Formula cars. Soon the sports car designers were saying that if a V6 or V8 will fit, so will our traditional V12. A change in regulations for 1962 prompted experimentation and Forghieri lengthened a Dino chassis to take the 250 engine. So the 250P was born. By 1963 the 250P had won at Le Mans and was on the ascendant.   Ferrari's GT car, the 250 GTO, by 1963 was looking to be beaten and needed a successor. What better than a 250P with a roof; thus the 250LM was born. LM for Le Mans to celebrate their victory? Here is the definitive development, production and biography of each of the 32 cars made in the 250LM series starting in 1964 and running through 1966. Never before has such detail been assembled on one model.   As driver David Piper says in his Foreword to this book, there is no more lovable racing car than a Ferrari 250LM. Up for grabs is 70th-anniversary swag like hats and shirts. Better stuff, such as paddock access at the Montreal Grand Prix and test drives for mere cashless mortals, also will be awarded. No purchase of a 2017 488GTB is necessary to win, although you’ll find one parked in front of the Hublot watch store on Fifth Avenue, should you change your mind.
