All For Show | E.M
musician!Eddie x showgirl!reader
Summary: 1955 New York City, where dreams come true. You get to dance and perform for crowds every night, bringing in good money for yourself and for daddy’s jazz club. The regulars love you, the women envy you, and the musicians are strictly banned from flirting with you (and the other dancers of course). This wasn’t a problem until your father up and coming musician Eddie Munson to perform at his jazz club. Eddie was the first man to catch your eye, and you the first performer to be worth his time, and your fathers wrath.

Chapter I: People are Strange | 1.9k words
Next
The rain pelted down on New York City in cold and unrelenting sheets, the traffic bustled, and one would even dare think that the torrential downpour couldn’t sour the mood of any New Yorker on this evening. Although that was far from the truth, the sheets of rain had no effect on those who frequented the jive clubs on 52nd. While traffic was relatively slow, and the constant whoosh of tires, tearing through deep puddles that littered the streets, could be heard, jazz enthusiasts gathered, flocked even, to the clubs along that stretch of road. Broadway by day, seedy little clubs by night, nothing would stop them nor the musicians.
Dancers would perform in the shoddier bars, singers would accompany jazz legends, crowds would eventually drink enough to let loose and grab their swing partners and bring a new life to the otherwise stuffy and humid rooms. The air would weigh heavy but the mood was light.
Dressing rooms filled up with smoke, cigarettes lined up in ashtrays like cars caught in a traffic jam on the Manhattan Bridge, and yours was no exception. Your cigarette lingered on the dark ashtray your fathers club provided, patting makeup onto your face, your hair in tight pin curls, waiting to be let down for the show. The pretty little number you were going to wear tonight was sure to turn some heads and you knew that it would make the club goers trajectory worthwhile with the downpour and all. Dinner and a show - at least that’s what your father would say, however not much dinner was being had by the time it was your turn to perform. You had a certain magic about you, enchanting the room, making them forget everything, from drug to drink and from drink to smoke.
You gave yourself a once over, heart hammering into your chest. You black robe bunched up in your lap, the satin keeping you cool in the sweltering humidity of the dressing room. Your eyeliner was defined and sharp, and you even added a small dash of brown eyeshadow under your eyes to create the illusion of sultry eyelashes à la Marilyn Monroe. All you were missing was your rouge.
“Are you almost ready, dollface?” You heard a familiar and deep voice call from beyond the door. Your father, the club owner, had managed to get you a spot in his reputable little joint. If you were to remember correctly his words were ‘Ain’t no way that my sweet doll is going to be cozying up in some sleazy beaknick club’, and so here you were, safe as can be and under the watchful eye of your father. He paid you generously and made sure that while you were whoring yourself out, as your mother liked to put it, you’d be safe. A man that was admittedly slightly ahead of his time, not by much, but it counted for something especially when you were made in the shade for the club.
“I’ll be right out, sir!” You called out through slightly pursed lips, applying a deep scarlet wax over them. You quickly let your hair down, brushing out your pin curls, giving you that movie star glamor that you adored. It added just that much more class to your performances. With a pucker of your lips, you brought the tip of your right hand ring finger to the corner of your lips and wiped away the small smudge. With one final fluff of your hair, and a deep breath, you stepped out.
Meanwhile, your  father had been preoccupied with the newest addition to the staff. Edward Munson. Unruly, cynical, rough around the edges, and gifted talent - the things that made musicians of this time. Your father had brought him in for an interview, and you’d maybe seen the back of the man’s head, nothing to give you a solid impression of him. Had you paid him any mind at all well, you would have noticed that his talent was not only in his nimble hands but in his voice too, his hair a bird's nest that he would pull back into a bun, and a smile that routinely had ladies swooning. No, he was no greaser of any sort, nothing but a beatnik in fact. Another thing that would have immediately caught your attention, and would in due time, was his dimpled smile - it was enough to have you real gone.
Your father made sure Edward was settled onto the stage, piano at his very fingertips. While his usual joint had him either swinging the bass or rocking the guitar, your dad decided that the safest option was to start with an almost melancholy melody - in fact it had been rehearsed many a time, and you too had rehearsed it in your sultriest voice with Victor, you old pianist. You could scat to it, get into that blues swing and with just enough nuance to keep not only the club goers entertained but yourself as well. Edward had the piece memorized as if it were the back of his hand, he could even play it backwards had he wanted to, that of course was not accounting for the pretty little number you hid under your nightgown.
As soon as the wild haired musician stepped out, the crowd cheered, whistles were heard across the music hall, and anticipation for your appearance only grew. Careful steps lead you to the backstage area where your father gave you a golden smile, “That’s my baby! Give em the old razzle dazzle!” he clapped his hands together eagerly. “Remember, we’re testing out a new musician tonight, He’s the fuckin’ cats pyjamas according to old Mr. Hefler,” Mr. Helfer being the man who passed the club down to your father, “and I expect with your voice it’ll just be a hit, dollface.” Your cheeks heated at the praise your father had given you.
When the whistles died down into a whisper and you heard the stage light go on, you exited, dropping your nightgown, allowing it to pool around your feet. You were left in a black floor length gown with a sweetheart neckline and black satin gloves that reached your elbows. Your Mary Jane heels snug on your feet. As soon as you emerged, the tobacco filled nightclub erupted in cheers, clapping, and loud wolf whistles. With a delicate movement of your hands you brought them down to earth, allowing a silence to swallow the room, anticipation so thick you could slice through it with a knife. The musician then started playing then tune gracefully, a swing to the notes. You captivated the audience with the first sultry note you sang out into the club, and the same could be said for the poor man attending to the piano keys. Your voice was a siren’s call, and it certainly didn’t help when half way through you started pulling your gloves off, tossing them into the crowd and turning to look at the gorgeous man providing your accompaniment. You shot him a wink and that’s the moment he knew he was a goner. He nearly faltered with his song for the first time in his career.
From one piece to the next, Edward watched you with hungry eyes, a wolf looking for his prey, but so did the club goers. You weren’t theirs or his for that matter so what did it matter? Nonetheless, a jealousy coursed through his veins at the sight of you wrapping a feather boa around the neck of a regular - Mr. Harrington. It was nothing but empty flirtation and he was a good sport about it. You had rejected him previously as you don’t tangle into affairs with clients, it was known. It didn’t matter either way because you had not eyes for him. For a moment, he wished it was he who would be getting this treatment, alas, your father had strictly forbidden it.
“Now, son,” Your father warned, “One thing you must know is that we have many tempting women here, that is the business after all, however we do protect them and we take care that they are very well protected, you know what I’m saying?” He warned Edward.
“I understand, sir, I don’t think I should be stepping out of line in that regard. I’ve played in many a club and frankly it’s not been an issue. Women may be tempting but I won’t find a wife in these clubs, I play em because it makes me feel alive.” With a gentle slap on the back, your father praised Edward Munson, letting out a small “don’t get any wise ideas son” but little did he know he would become his biggest headache.
Once the show was over and you glistened from the sweat that formed from being under the hot spotlights, you snuck off backstage to cool off. A little glass of water and a lemon tea to help your voice would do. You quickly beelined to your dressing room, slipping off your dress and pulling something much more comfortable on. A little note from your father awaited you in front of your vanity, as it always did – it was a tradition between the both of you dating back to your first performance. A smile overtook your face, red lips stretching wide as you nursed your tea. As you put the mug down, you grabbed a cigarette, tucking it between your lips and lighting it. It remained perched against your plump bottom lip as if it belonged there. Suddenly, a knock at your door broke you out of your trance.
“Come in!” You called out meekly seconds before the door swung gently open with a creak. The old hinges needing a little tune up if anything. Your dearest father poked his head in between the crack in the door frame.
“Are you decent?” He called out, a chuckle softly escaping your lips. He knew you’d respond with a cheeky line, you were witty and came up with quick retorts to his questions, no matter how simple they might have been.
“Me?” You laughed out. “Sure, I’m decent.” That earned a light chuckle from your father and a rather abrupt snort from someone behind him. This piqued your interest and you got up, adjusting the new robe you had slung around yourself. Your delicate hands tied a bow in the front of it and with a smooth and calculated movement, you slipped a pair of slippers on before making your way over to the door to properly invite the party of two - it seremed - in.
“Sorry to bother you, doll, but you must meet Edward Munson, our new musician.” Your father stepped foot into the foot, revealing the dashing man that hid behind him. You couldn’t help but part your lips, catching the cigarette before it fell and taking a long drag to compensate. Your eyes roamed over the man’s body, tight black dress shirt with the top three buttons undone, messy birds nest hair, a smirk playing on his kissable lips, and yet his eyes as soft as honey. His own cigarette was tucked gently between his ringed index and middle finger on his right hand, and lord what you’d allow those skilled hands to do to you. It seemed that a small amount of ink poked out from under his rolled up sleeve and you desperately wished to reach out and see it for yourself but you couldn’t – you cut yourself off before you could trail your eyes any lower. What was happening? You never found a client attractive, much less the musicians. What about this man has got you wound up?
“Call me Eddie.”

Agatha x Rio AU || Warnings: smut

(Listen along while reading)
——————————————————
Rio had been tracking her mark for two nights now. Being a private eye in her time was easy, given that no one ever suspected a woman of anything.
She had been paid by Ralph Harkness to see if his wife had another man on the side. It was a pretty routine case for her to get. She would either get proof of her in bed with someone or of her going to a book club. She hoped for the book club, if just to avoid having some blubbering man who never treated his wife right in the first place breaking down in her office.
She had blended well into the background of Agatha’s life, situating herself as another face in the crowd. When she shopped, she was a few aisles over. When she drove, she tailed her two cars back. Now, she was parked around the corner, hidden on a fire escape in a shady neighborhood, watching Agatha through her binoculars.
While Agatha normally wore elegant dresses, she was wearing something closer to a feminine suit with suspenders and the blouse beneath it having the top few buttons undone. Her makeup and hair were flawless, her red lip drawing attention. She adjusted her suit jacket before walking down the street in wing-tipped shoes. It reminded Rio of something that Katherine Hepburn would wear. She looked both beautiful and dashing all in one.
She completely that she was at work as she watched the woman slid past the person guarding the door into what looked like a private club.
“Shit…” she whispered to herself, not having gotten one photo of her.
She decided to go inside. After snapping a picture of the club entrance and Agatha’s convertible, she left her camera in her own car. She made her way to the door of the club, knocking when she realized it was locked.
The door opened, revealing who she thought was a man at first, but was a very masculine woman.
“Hello, Dolly,” she said with a smirk, “First time here?”
Rio smiled nervously, saying, “Yes.”
“Relax, you’re safe here. Have fun,” she said, stepping aside to let her in.
Rio walked inside, her dark green satin dress hugging her form, falling to her knee. Her black hair swept down in a perfect wave to kiss her bare shoulders. She looked around, seeing women everywhere. They were drinking at the bar, dancing on the dance floor, and wrapped up in each other in dark cozy corners. Rio had known of places like this for certain men who lived their lives in secret, but never women.
She walked up to the bar and ordered a martini. She drank it instantly before ordering another, needing a dose of courage. She had followed others into dangerous and sordid places where she felt unsafe, but this place made her uneasy in an entirely different way.
She nursed her second martini, perched on one of the stools as a dapper woman named Syd chatted her up. She caught sight of Agatha across the room. The other woman leaned against the wall, flirting with a young, blushing blonde. As if she felt Rio watching, her eyes flicked over and found hers. Rio’s heart stopped a moment as she looked away. After a few seconds passed, she chanced another glance, finding that Agatha’s eyes were still on her.
Rio looked back at Syd, who had caught on that her attention was somewhere else.
“Sorry, you were saying?” Rio said, sipping her martini.
“Agatha,” Syd said, catching her off guard.
“Syd,” said a familiar voice right behind her.
Rio just about jumped out of her skin. She was normally so calm when out on a job, but something about this woman knocked her off balance.
“Take a walk, Syd. Your girl’s looking for you,” Agatha said, nodding toward a very angry looking woman.
“Shit,” Syd muttered before running over to the other woman with profuse apologies.
“Such a dog,” Agatha said with an arched brow, “So, I haven’t seen you around here.”
Rio played with the toothpick in her drink.
“Yeah… it’s my first time at a place like this.”
“Oh! Well, welcome to the greener grass. No man in sight.”
Rio laughed and said, “Thank you. It is definitely better than any nightclub I’ve been to.”
“I’m Agatha, by the way,” she said, reaching her hand out.
“Vera,” she said, giving her an alias.
Agatha brought Rio’s hand up to her lips, kissing the knuckles, leaving red lipstick behind. Her cheeks burned as she blushed, her reaction betraying her professionalism. Agatha kept her hand in hers.
“Would you like to dance?” she asked as a slow song came on.
“Sure.”
Agatha led her to the dance floor. In one smooth motion, she spun Rio before pulling her in. Her hand rested on her hip and the other held Rio’s.
“So, Vera, are you married or single?” She asked.
“Single, of course,” she said.
“It’s not always the case here. A lot of women need to hide themselves behind a husband.”
“You?”
“Married. Unhappily. I hoped it would at least be peaceful, but that man is drunk most of the time.”
“Oh,” Rio said, “I’m sorry. That sounds terrible.”
“It is. I can’t leave, though.”
“Why not?”
“He would get everything.”
“You… don’t have anything on him?” Rio asked, unable to turn the investigator side of herself off.
“Like what?”
“Well, if he was cheating..”
“He would still get everything. No one would hire a divorcee either. No, I just need to outlive his liver and hope he never notices that his wife prefers the company of women,” she said.
Rio swallowed, realizing how privileged she had been to inherit the money she had to start her investigation business. Most women couldn’t earn the money she did. Now, she was about to completely ruin Agatha’s situation when she had nothing to fall back on.
“Well, I hope his liver fails,” she said.
“Thanks,” Agatha said with a smirk, swaying with her.
Rio pressed her cheek to hers as they danced. Her front was against Agatha’s as she was held by her. She breathed in the other woman’s expensive perfume, finding herself dizzied by it all. She had always told herself that romance was never something that mattered to her. She never felt that spark of attraction with any man. Now, she felt a rush of new emotions swirling around in her mind.
“So…” Agatha whispered, “Why have you been following me?”
Rio’s eyes went wide as she tried to step back. Agatha tightened her hold, clicking her tongue.
“I-I don’t know what you mean,” Rio replied.
Agatha turned her head, her face an inch from Rio’s.
“I suppose he hired you. For a PI, you don’t lie very well. Do I make you nervous?” she asked with a cocky smile.
“I.. n…” Rio stuttered before sighing, “Yes. He hired me. I’m sorry.”
A bit of worry and fear flashed in Agatha’s eyes at the confirmation. Defeat settled into her posture.
“Well, I guess I’m going to be out on the street. No way will my parents have a homosexual daughter in their home.”
“No,” Rio said, “As far as I’m concerned, I found you volunteering to help the homeless.”
“Really?” Agatha asked, stunned as a person who had never been given the benefit of the doubt.
“Really.”
“Thank you, Vera.”
“It’s Rio, actually,” she said.
“Rio, that’s beautiful. Well, thank you Rio,” Agatha said, leaning in and kissing her cheek.
Rio’s blush returned, making her cheeks glow scarlet at Agatha’s touch.
“I’m sure you want to be anywhere but here, now that you don’t need to follow me, but I would like to buy you another drink if you’d like,” Agatha said.
“Sure,” she said, “I actually like it here… I mean, because it’s nice to not have men pawing at me…”
“Of course, Sweetheart,” Agatha said with a smirk.
She ordered them both whiskeys and handed one to Rio.
“Cheers,” she said, sipping hers.
The two talked for another hour. Agatha had Rio laughing and Rio captivated Agatha with work stories. The other people around them seemed to fall away as they only focused on one another in the crowded club.
Agatha rested her hand on Rio’s thigh as she laughed at a joke, kicking up a burst of panic within her. The entire night had been so wonderful but also so confusing.
“I should go,” Rio blurted out.
“O-Oh, okay,” Agatha said, crestfallen and retracting her hand.
“I just need to make sure I get some sleep,” she lied.
“Well, can I walk you out to your car? I mean, I already know what it looks like since I’ve seen it behind me all week.”
“I really need to work on tailing people…” Rio said, “Sure. I would like that.”
She walked outside with Agatha on the empty street, a single light illuminating the sidewalk. Agatha rested her hand on her lower back, guiding her toward the car. Rio felt more from that touch than she had from any kiss she shared with a man.
Once they reached the car, Rio turned to face her.
“Thank you for the drink,” she said.
“Thank you for not ratting me out,” Agatha said, “I really did enjoy your company, though.”
“I did too,” Rio said.
Rio leaned in, hugging Agatha. They held each other for a while, Agatha’s hand rubbing her back. She pulled back slightly to look into Rio’s eyes. Their noses brushed against each other. Rio felt something surrender within her. She closed the distance between them with a kiss. Agatha sucked on her lip, the kiss intensifying immediately.
Agatha pulled back, smiling with smeared lipstick, the two of their shades mixed.
“We should go somewhere less out in the open if we are going to continue this,” Agatha said.
“My place,” Rio said, her usual boldness finally returning to her.
“I’ll follow you for once.”
The two drove their respective cars to the brownstone Rio had bought years ago after her parents passed. She led Agatha inside. The other woman pulled her in by the hand and kissed her slowly, pouring every bit of tenderness she had into it.
“Bedroom?” Agatha whispered.
“Huh? Oh…” Rio asked, every thought having vacated itself.
She took her hand as she brought her upstairs, opening the door to her room. She turned on a lamp, turning to see Agatha stripping her jacket off. Rio walked towards her, taking her suspenders and pulling them down. She unbuttoned the rest of Agatha’s shirt while kissing her again. She felt Agatha reach around her and tug on her zipper, pulling it down to release her from her dress.
Rio was left in her stockings, garters, and brassiere. Agatha pulled back, shamelessly admiring her.
“Wow…” Agatha said softly.
Rio tried to avoid slouching or nervously playing with her hands. She was not used to being regarded in this way. Agatha kept her eyes on her as she stripped herself. Rio was rendered speechless in the presence of a beautiful woman naked in her bedroom.
“Wow…” Rio echoed.
Agatha crossed the room, cupping Rio’s cheeks in her hands. She began to lean in. Rio gripped her wrist with her hand.
“Agatha-“
“Yeah?” Agatha said, her eyes still on her lips.
“I’ve never..”
“Been with a woman before, I figured,” she said.
“Been with anyone before…” Rio said with an air of embarrassment.
Agatha looked into her eyes, taking in the new information. She ran her thumb over her cheek.
“Do you want to stop?” she asked.
“No… I just… thought you should know.”
“I’m glad you told me,” Agatha said with a smile, “We’ll go as slow as you want to.”
She leaned in, locking lips with Rio. She sat at the edge of the bed, pulling Rio to straddle her. She smoothly unhooked her bra, tossing it aside. Her hands cupped her breasts, earning a gasp from Rio. Sitting up, Agatha pressed her lips to her chest. She sucked on the skin beneath it and sucked hard. Rio whimpered at the delicious pain as she was marked.
Her hips rolled over Agatha’s as the more experienced woman teased and toyed with her. Her lips and teeth seemed to be everywhere, leaving love-bites wherever she could. Rio was left breathless once Agatha had claimed every available inch of her.
Agatha pulled back and looked at the flushed woman on her lap. Her lips had faded, smudged lipstick, her hair was mussed, and her eyes dilated. She looked ruined for the first time in her life and the fact that she had caused that fueled Agatha. She moved them, laying Rio down. She wanted to keep Rio’s stockings and garters on, so she elected to grip her panties, tearing the fabric. She tossed the scrap aside and kissed along Rio’s inner thigh, making her squirm.
Agatha was driving her to the edge of her sanity. She looked down at her as the other woman settled between her thighs. Rio’s mouth fell open as Agatha’s lips melted into her.
“Fuck! Agatha… please don’t stop…” Rio breathed.
Agatha moaned against her. The sounds of Rio’s pleading made her hungry for her. She circled her arms around her thighs. Her tongue explored her, parting her and sliding inside. Rio let out a yelp when Agatha found a certain spot hidden inside of her. She ground her tongue against it before pulling out. She pressed her lips to her clit, licking and then sucking on it. She slid a finger into Rio, being gentle while opening her up.
Rio was already embarrassingly close to cumming once Agatha began to fuck her. She felt her heart pounding against her chest, resounding in her ears. She gripped her sheets in her fists and twisted as her body gave in. A moan tore itself from her throat as her pleasure spilled over the edge.
Her body shook as she came down from her high. Agatha kissed her way up her front to her lips. She cupped Rio’s jaw and leaned down, kissing her with her arousal on her lips.
Agatha smirked as her hand stayed between her thighs, drawing out the aftershocks while watching Rio closely. Whimpers left Rio’s lips between shaking breaths. She held the gaze from Agatha’s blue eyes as she tried and failed to regain her senses.
There was a glint of mischief in Agatha’s eye as she slid a second finger into her, moving it slowly to allow her to adjust. Rio let out a shocked moan while Agatha sped her thrusts, her thumb working over her clit. Her pleasure built on top of her previous climax, quickly rushing to a new one.
“You’re being so good for me,” Agatha purred.
The praise washed over her, making her cunt clench around her. She felt her walls flutter around her fingers. Her breath caught, her brows bunching together as she looked into Agatha’s eyes. Agatha was left speechless at the sight of Rio cumming. She stroked her through her aftershocks again before sliding out of her.
Rio ran her hand along the length of Agatha’s side, stopping at her hip. She bit her lip before moving Agatha onto her back.
“Hey, tonight’s about you. You don’t need-“
“I want to,” Rio said, “Just… tell me what to do.”
Rio moved down between Agatha’s thighs, looking at her sex with nothing short of fear. She leaned in and ran her tongue along her slid, earning a whine from Agatha. The feeling of drawing that little bit of pleasure from her had Rio hooked. She gave her clit and cunt kitten licks, testing what worked and what didn’t.
“Inside… slide it inside…” Agatha moaned.
Rio did as she was told, the taste of desire exploding on her tongue. She moved and flexed her tongue, looking for her most sensitive spots. She finally found one that made Agatha buck her hips. She gripped her hips and pinned them to keep her from moving out of reach. She felt a hand in her hair while she fucked her with her tongue. Agatha’s grip made her grind herself against the mattress. She was pulled closer, nearly being suffocated in the most delicious way. Agatha panted faster before her thighs shook and her walls collapsed around Rio’s tongue.
Once the hand in her hair loosened, Rio came up from between her legs, her lips and chin slick with arousal. Agatha cupped her face and pulled her down. She kissed and licked the remnants of her own desire from Rio’s face. Rio held her close, the two of them falling into the same breathing rhythm.
“That was… thank you,” Rio whispered.
“I hope your first time was worth the wait,” Agatha murmured before capturing her lips in another kiss.
“It definitely was. Can I… see you again?” Rio asked with an edge of nervousness.
“I would love that,” Agatha said, kissing her forehead, “I do need to go before Ralph wakes up.”
“Right. Him,” Rio muttered.
“Tomorrow?”
“Where?”
“If you’re any good at your job, you’ll be able to find me.”
————————————
6 months later…
Rio had spent every moment Agatha could get away from the house with her. She fell quickly and deeply in love with the other woman. She knew she would always need her in her life.
She waited in her car with a long ranged lens, her camera aimed at a motel. A man walked out with a half-tucked shirt and a woman half his age. She leaned up and kissed him, his hand gripping her ass.
A smile broke out over Rio’s lips at the sight as she snapped a number of pictures. She drove off and met Agatha at the club.
“So?” Agatha asked.
“You have enough to petition for divorce,” she said.
Agatha beamed at her, nearly tackling her with a hug. The two had agreed to have Agatha move in with Rio once the divorce was granted. The two would run the business and spend their lives together. Agatha pulled Rio into a deep kiss.
“I can’t believe how lucky I am,” she whispered against her lips.
“I’m the lucky one,” Rio said back.
She pulled Agatha out to the dance floor as one of their favorite love songs played. The two danced, holding one another until closing time.

A drop of ink, a blot spread across time
(Vintage au)
Plot summary: It was 1950s when pen pals were popular and almost everyone had one! You used to have a handful of them but the camaraderie between you and them faded as you got older. One day, you found a newspaper on your late great-grandpa's shelves in his bedroom. Excitedly, you flipped the papers to get to a specific page and bingo! There was a section for the addresses of people who are looking for a pen-friend much like yourself. After randomly choosing, you sent out your first letter and he replied back! However, you noticed something weird in the photo he sent...

The amber glow of the afternoon sun bathed the room as the open windows situated at the opposite of the door allowed sunlight streams to enter the room as its panes quivered in hushed symphony due to the beckoning of the hot air. If you moved closer to the windows, you could see dust particles illuminated by the natural light. Even after the passing of your great-grandfather, the bookish scent of his cologne still lingers in his bedroom along with his possessions which were either coated with a thin layer of dust or covered with a big white cloth.
The wooden floor creaked beneath you as you walked towards his bookshelves in hopes of finding pieces of classical literature and maybe learn a thing or two from it. You delicately traced your index finger through the long vertical rows of books, leaving a trail of dust on the pads of your digit. As you peruse through countless novels only to be unsatisfied until you saw a newspaper at the edge of the shelf, untouched by the dust that plagues the rest.
'How strange...' you thought to yourself as you rubbed your thumb and index finger against the surface of the paper to determine its texture: it was sandy and rough, definitely ancient but the format was similar to the ones your dad reads in the morning so it must be a freshly produced newspaper, albeit printed in a different quality of paper.
Or so you thought...
The newspapers in your hands gave you a glimmer of hope; it was an opportunity to find a pen friend! You used to have a few ones but stopped writing to them either because they used too much colloquial words or they had at least twenty spelling mistakes in each sentence which gave you a migraine whilst trying to make out if your correspondent was writing in a foreign language or not. But this time, maybe you could hit the jackpot and find an actually nice pen-pal. Excitedly, you flipped through the papers and stopped at the specific page which had a list of names along with their addresses under the bold heading:
'Pen-friends! Make new friends around the world!'
Your eyes scanned across the list of names, allowing your intuition to guess the personality of that stranger based on their names alone. But then, a specific name caught your eye- it was uncommon which was the main reason it stood out from the rest of the names which probably were taken from 'Top 10 best names for children of this year'. You took a closer look of the address below that person's name and turned out, both of you lived in the same area! A surge of enthusiasm rippled throughout your body and immediately tucked the newspaper into the inside pocket of your coat.
~~~~~♡~~~~~♡~~~~~♡~~~~~
The curtains of your living room slowly opened as you peeked your head out and pressed your face against the glass. A day had passed after you had sent your very first letter and heck, you even went a mile far by sending a photograph of your two cats to make a memorable first impression. Then- just like you had anticipated- the postman on his bike suddenly came into view and halted his vehicle by your mail-box and placed a letter inside. You clutched the folds of the curtains unable to contain the happiness blossoming inside you. As soon as the postman disappeared out of your eyesight, you rushed outside to take the letter out of the mailbox. The first thing that greeted your eyes was the immaculate handwriting and the scent emitted from the paper.
'How sweet of him...' you thought as you continued reading the letter in your mind. The paragraphs were neatly organized and made of outdated vocabulary that you wouldn't understand had you not taken an interest in classic literature. You could tell this man practiced utmost eloquence just by his letter alone. Overall, he wrote a few things about himself and asked you about your hobbies, what you like and blablabla.
But then, something struck within you concerning with the photograph he sent and notes written behind it:
"The construction of the mall is making my ears bleed. I cannot stand the constant sounds of the drills and other sounds coming from it. I daresay, you must be experiencing the same disturbance as we are only one street apart from each other. Perhaps we should plan to meet up after the mall opens. What do you think of it?"
The more you stared at the photograph and the note, the more confused you became. The picture showed the mall with the same as the one down the street but it was still in construction according to the photo. 'Huh?' A frown stretched across your face. That specific mall had been going on more nearly a century now to the point that the community had been urging the government to shut it down in order to build a more innovative one. Didn't it finish construction like a hundred years ago? But his photo told a whole new different story.
Suspicions rose inside of you as a spiral of questions revolved around your head- you found it difficult to process it. Not missing a beat, you hurried to your room to find that newspaper you took from your late great-grandfather's shelf. You mumbled in frustration when you couldn't find it; you swore you left it either on the desk or on the bed. Finally, you found it under the bed and oh my...
The letter was published a century back in time which meant that...
"T-The man I just sent a letter...was from the past...." The newspaper dropped from your hands. Your letter had ripped its way out of the fabric of time and went into the mailbox of a man who lived in the same area as you but different time period. He was in the past, you were in the future.
Still, a part of you felt curious about the interaction between two people of different dimensions. So you decided to reply back to his letter. What could go wrong...right?
Dark!Steve Rogers x female!Reader
Summary : You always thought you’d marry someone closer to your age, but you couldn’t complain. Although Steve was nearly seven years older than you, you couldn’t have asked for a better partner. He was kind, sweet and had always looked out for you ever since you moved into the neighbourhood at fifteen years of age. At first, you assumed it was an elder brother-ly thing. Beating up the boys at school who were bothering you, those who asked you to accompany them to the movies even after you said no. But on your nineteenth birthday, when he kissed you in the kitchen while your party continued on in the backyard, everything changed. You’d been going out since then and he’d made it clear to you as well as your parents that he planned on making an honest woman out of you.  You and Steve had the perfect life, you couldn't ask for anything more. But that doesn't mean he couldn't.
You fell back on the couch, deciding on taking a small break after having spent the whole morning dusting and vacuuming the house. You still had to do the dishes and hang the clothes out to dry. Your mama always said, a man’s home is a reflection of the woman he’s with, and so you made sure to keep the house in near perfect condition. You looked up at the clock, a wedding gift from Steve’s ma. You adored Sarah Rogers, she was almost like a second mother to you. It was already past noon and you really needed to get a move on. You had less than an hour to take a quick shower and then make a quick lunch for you and Steve to take to the garage.
Finishing your shower in record time, you quickly add chicken soup, flour, pepper and cayenne into the slow cooker followed by stirring in the chicken and veggies. You knew Steve always enjoyed your slow cooked chicken a la king. You could leave it on and it would be ready just in time for dinner. Packing a quick ham and cheese sandwich for the both of you, you placed it in your bag before checking your appearance one last time in the mirror. You had on a sleeveless white blouse with a blue, floral-a-line circle skirt and black kitten heels along with a classic red lip. Steve always preferred you in skirts and dresses as opposed to pants or trousers.
With ten minutes before the clock struck one, you quickly made your way out of the house and began the short walk to the garage where Steve worked. You always brought Steve his lunch and spent the half hour of his lunch break with him and today was no exception. You’d been married for just over a year now and the two of you had decided that you’d wait for a while before starting a family, wanting to just enjoy each other’s company for a while before you added children to the mix. But it was established that you both wanted kids. While two would be more than enough for you, Steve wanted three, at the very least.
You always thought you’d marry someone closer to your age, but you couldn’t complain. Although Steve was nearly seven years older than you, you couldn’t have asked for a better partner. He was kind, sweet and had always looked out for you ever since you moved into the neighbourhood at fifteen years of age. At first, you assumed it was an elder brother-ly thing. Beating up the boys at school who were bothering you, those who asked you to accompany them to the movies even after you said no. But on your nineteenth birthday, when he kissed you in the kitchen while your party continued on in the backyard, everything changed. You’d been going out since then and he’d made it clear to you as well as your parents that he planned on making an honest woman out of you.
And exactly three years later, on your twenty-second birthday, he asked you to marry him. And you said yes, of course. The two of you got married two months after that day, in an intimate ceremony with only the closest of friends and family. Steve worked as a mechanic at Mr. Stark’s garage, making more than enough for the two of you. After the monthly expenses, the mortgage on the house and your savings were covered, you had just enough left every month to go out for a fancy dinner and to the movies once.
As you reached the garage, you spotted Steve bent over the open bonnet of a car, tinkering around. Taking this opportunity to startle him, you walk up behind him as slowly and noiselessly as possible before placing a hand on his shoulder, calling out his name, causing him to startle and hit his head on the bonnet. He curses loudly before turning around, the anger evident in his eyes which burns out a little when he sees you. “You should know better than to do something like that doll,” he whispers in your ear, pulling you close by your waist before pressing a chaste kiss to your lips. You feel the heat rising to your face as you look towards your feet, licking your lips as you mumble out an apology.
“Why don’t you take a seat doll, I’ll be done here in five,” he says before continuing to work on the engine. You nod as you take a seat a little distance away, pulling out the book you got from the library last week, smoothing out the dog-eared edge before diving back into the book. Just as you were about to finish the chapter you’d been reading, Bucky walks out of Mr. Stark’s office, snatching the book right out of your hands. “Hey!” you huff out a protest, reaching out for the book that he proceeded to hold above his head. Laughing heartily at your antics, Steve comes up behind Bucky to snatch the book and hands it back to you before sitting down and pulling you onto his lap, wrapping his arm around your waist possessively.
Rolling his eyes at that, Bucky continues “Nat needs y’all to come over for dinner tomorrow night,” he says as he opens his lunch, digging into the food. Bucky and Natasha were Steve’s friends and had become yours too when you started dating him. The two had been married for five years now. Natasha was probably the most badass woman you’d ever met and while you hoped your mama never caught you saying that, it was true. She was headstrong and never took any crap from anyone. She was a nurse and while you admired her, you were a bit envious of the fact that she was a working woman. Steve didn’t allow you to work. He believed that it was his job to earn money to support you and while you would have still loved to work, you understood that things couldn’t always go your way.
“What for? We’re going to my ma’s tomorrow night,” he questioned as you handed him his sandwich, before grabbing your own.
“Go to Sarah’s some other day. Nat’s going to prepare a feast and she needs you there. Sam and Wanda and Clint and the family are coming too. Come with your appetites prepared,” he said, finishing off the last of his lunch before dusting his hands off and getting back to work, “No excuses, be there by seven. And for god’s sake Rogers, look presentable.”
“Beat it, punk,” Steve yelled as Bucky moved away with a wave of his middle finger. You looked at Steve, giggling, before promising, “I’ll drop by and make her some soup for tonight. I’ll spend the night too if need be. Don’t worry, we’ll go to Nat’s tomorrow,” you kissed his cheek before removing yourself from his lap, packing up your bag. “I should get going, let you get back to work. I have lots to do at home,” you wave a goodbye, Steve watching your hips sway.
Steve knew you were the perfect dame for him. He loved you more than anyone he’d ever loved before. He knew you’d be the perfect wife and mother to his children. He wanted you just to himself for a little time before the two of you started a family because he knew once he got you pregnant, he planned on keeping you round and full of himself for as long as possible. Just the thought of you barefoot and pregnant under his roof, cooking for him and his children, your breasts swollen and heavy with milk for his child. Just the thought of you pregnant and oh, so sensitive because of him, it all turned him on more than you could ever imagine.
He vowed to start trying to get you pregnant soon.
*
By the time you got done with all your chores around the house, you were exhausted. Dinner was done about halfway and the chicken noodle soup for Sarah was done and packed for you to take to her. She wasn’t feeling too well the past few days so you and Steve were going to visit her tomorrow with dinner, just to check up on her. But now, you’d already called and told her about your plans for tomorrow evening and that you’d swing by today before dinner. She was rather accommodating, claiming that the two of you needed to spend time with people your age. And she sounded much better as well. Her cold seemed to have improved and she sounded more energetic.
At half past five, you decided to get to Sarah's house. She lived close enough, just a couple of houses down the street. When you and Steve got married, you decided to get a house close enough to both his ma and your parents as well. Which reminded you that you needed to visit your mama soon as well. You had borrowed her Vogue knitting books, and it was high time you gave them back. You quickly make the ten minute walk to her house and let yourself in using your set of keys to enter the house, not wanting Sarah to move around too much but to your surprise, you find her in the kitchen, humming a tune you couldn’t quite recognise, cooking what smelled like her famous lasagna causing your mouth to water instantly, the response Pavlovian at this point.
“You’re supposed to be in bed ma, not prancing around the kitchen doing only the Lord knows what,” you say as she turns around, giving you a wide smile.
“Don’t you dare sass me kid. Is that really how you greet your poor old mother in law?” she asked as she walked out of the kitchen, pulling you into a tight hug. Giving you a final squeeze, she grabbed your hands in her frail ones, leading you towards the living room.
Stopping her halfway, you let go of her hand before holding up the thermos full of warm soup that you had brought.
“I’m going to put this away for now. Heat it up before you eat it, okay?” you instructed as you moved towards the kitchen, putting the soup to the side before moving your hair out of your face and tying on an apron.
“And what exactly do you think you’re doing missy?” she said as she followed you into the kitchen, thin arms crossed across her chest.
“Doing your dishes, what else?”
“Is anything I say going to make you stop?” she wondered out loud.
“Fat chance,” you said as you rolled your eyes.
“Well, you better hang around until the lasagna is done, I’ll pack some for Steve. Speaking of which, where is that boy?,” she said.
“Still at the shop I believe,” you answered, almost done with the few dishes.
“I see,” she says, an odd look passing over her face but she doesn’t say anything further so you continue to work in a comfortable silence.
Wiping your hands when you were done, you removed your apron and put it back in its place. “Alright ma, I should get going. Steve must be back by now,” you said as you took your bag, a large oven dish of lasagna in your hands, moving towards the door, only to be stopped by her.
“Tell me my dear, have y’all thought about babies yet?”
Furrowing your eyebrows, you look at her with a confused look. “We’ve decided to wait. And we’ve only been married a year now,” you answer.
Laughing lightly, she squeezes your hand in hers before letting go. “Alright. You tell that boy to come see me soon, okay?” You nod and wave goodbye as you start walking home. Checking the time on your watch, you’re horrified to find it’s already quarter to seven and increasing your pace, almost running to get back home before Steve. You reach home with just five minutes before the clock strikes seven, having just enough time to freshen up and fix your hair before the doorbell rings.
At the sight of you, a smile quickly overtakes his face which you can’t help but reciprocate. As soon as he walks in he has his arms around you, pulling you into a passionate kiss. You quickly push him away with a giggle, “At least wash your hands first!”
“I can’t help myself when it comes to you,” he says, squeezing your ass which causes you to squeak. Laughing, he hangs his cap and goes to freshen up as you get to setting dinner out.
At the table, you tell Steve of his mom’s request and he agrees, saying he’ll go see her on Sunday.
“Any clue what this impromptu get-together at Bucky and Nat’s is about ?”
“I tried but couldn’t get anything outta him. Guess we’ll only know tomorrow,” he shrugged.
“I should call and ask if she needs any help,” you said after dinner once you were done with clearing the table and putting the leftovers in the fridge. Steve was in the living room with a book and a beer. You couldn’t afford a television just yet but Steve had been saving up and according to him, you’d be able to get one in a month or two.
He hummed absentmindedly, which meant he wasn’t really paying attention. Sighing, you quickly rang Nat up. It was Bucky who answered the phone.
“Hey, is Nat there?” you asked.
“Sure, I’ll just put her on,” he said and you could hear him calling out to Natasha in the background.
“Hello dear, to what do I owe this pleasure?” she laughed.
Giggling, you reply “Just wanted to check if you needed any help for tomorrow. It was rather impromptu and I heard that everyone is coming,” to which she only huffed and said “I just require you and Steve to show up, that’s all. Now I got loads to do honey, I’ll see you tomorrow!” she said as she swiftly hung up leaving you a little stunned.
“That was weird,” you think out loud as you sit down next to Steve on the couch, his arm immediately draping itself around your shoulder and pulling you into his body. You snuggle closer, a content sigh slipping from your lips.
“Don’t think so much, it’s probably nothing,” he soothes, his fingers playing with the collar of your blouse. Oh, so he was listening.
“But-“ you start, immediately silenced by Steve shushing you. “Enough about this. We’ll go there tomorrow and find out,” he chastises, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Deciding to just let it go for now, you untangle yourself from Steve who lets you go albeit a bit reluctantly and get ready for bed. It takes you some time to fall asleep but with Steve’s arm around your waist, holding you close, you manage to get a few hours of rest.
*
You fixed your pretty yellow sundress and checked your hair and makeup one last time in the mirror. Modest but tempting. Perfect. Just as you were about to call out to Steve, he emerged from the bath, freshly shaved. Still not dressed, you tilt your head towards the cupboard, urging him to get dressed quickly.
Rolling his eyes playfully, selecting a simple khaki and the baby blue shirt you’d left out for him. Steve combed his hair back, following you out of your bedroom, watching you pack up his ma’s lasagna. You knew it was Bucky’s favourite, it was almost everybody’s favourite, having not let him eat any of it last night.
You knew Nat hadn’t asked you to bring anything with you but your mama would never let you leave home for a party without a little something for the hosts. So here you were, outside Nat and Bucky’s door, a tray of lasagna in your hands and Steve’s arms around your waist. Bucky opened the door with a wide smile, a bottle of beer in his hand.
“Come on in, kids!” He almost yelled, definitely a little tipsy. Smiling at him, you stepped inside and Steve closed the door behind the two of you.
Sam and Wanda sat on the couch, each nursing their own bottle of beer and a glass of wine respectively. She smiled and waved at you, patting the couch on her side, inviting you to take a seat. Holding up the lasagna, you tilted your head, motioning towards the kitchen.
Natasha and Wanda both drank occasionally. You didn’t though. Steve didn’t like you drinking, not even a beer on the occasion. It was all your fault really.
It was your best friend from school Ella’s twentieth birthday. Just you and a couple of other people from your class decided to surprise her with a little get together near the lake by the old lighthouse. You knew there would be alcohol but as long as you didn’t drink too much and were aware of your surroundings, things would be fine right?
Wrong. Steve had been by your parents house, looking for you and being told exactly where and with who you were, he couldn’t control his rage. He didn’t approve of ‘Ella and her posse of bimbos’, as he put it. You knew that and while you didn’t agree with him, it was the reason you couldn’t tell him about your whereabouts that night.
When he finally found you, you were sitting on a little picnic blanket, half drunk bottle of beer in your hands, chatting away with Ella and her boyfriend. You were a little tipsy but immediately sobered up at the sight of Steve storming towards you.
You quickly got up, dropping the bottle as it rolled off somewhere, the sound of your heart beating and the blood rushing through your veins deafening. Ella tried to intercept him, trying to get him to stop and talk but he just ignored her and continued to walk towards you, grabbing hold of your upper arm. You yelped loudly at how tight his grip was, trying to get him to let go of you as he dragged you away from the lake and towards his motorcycle.
At a distance from the lake, he finally let go of your arm, pinching the bridge of his nose, eyes shut.
“Ste-,”
“Shut up. I don’t want a word out of you,” he spat.
You quickly shut your mouth, taking a step back from him.
“How many times, huh? How many fucking times have I told you to stay away from that girl? And yet, here you are, dressed like a slut, drinking away with that stupid whore and her friends,” he says viciously, taking a step forward for each one you took back until you were backed up against a tree.
You were terrified. You’d never seen him this angry before, at least not at you.
“You are never to see that girl again, do you understand?” he barks, causing you to nod your head so hard, you thought your neck might snap.
“Good. Let’s get you home. Put this on,” he says as he holds up his jacket for you which you promptly slip on, following him to his motorcycle. You don’t even realise when you start crying, the tears streaming down your face making the skin burn against the harsh wind.
When you finally reached home, you got off wordlessly, shrugging off his jacket which was hanging from your smaller frame and handing it to him. You turned to walk back towards the front door only to be stopped by him grabbing your wrist and pulling you toward him.
At the sight of the wet trails streaking your face, a flash of guilt passes in his eyes but it’s gone just as quickly as it arrived.
“You know I’m saying this because I care about you, okay? I don’t want anything bad happening to you, you know that right?”
You can only nod numbly, as he gives you a small smile and a peck on the lips before gesturing for you to go back in, watching you till you’ve gone inside and locked the front door.
Of course, you wouldn’t talk to him for days after that. Ignoring his phone calls or having your mama pick up the phone, telling him you weren’t home when he came knocking.
You made him grovel and plead, letting him know just how angry you were but in the end, you gave in. You loved him, with his flaws and all.
Pulling yourself out of your little daydream, you walked towards the kitchen where you could hear Natasha moving about. As you walked, you admired the picture frames that adorned the walls. You loved Nat and Bucky’s house, so happy and full of memories. You couldn’t wait to have that with Steve.
“Now, didn’t I tell you not to get anything? I’m cooking up a storm here, who’s gonna eat all of this?” She questioned, her hands on her hips, over mitts on her hands and a frilly apron on.
You laughed and moved closer to give her a quick peck on her cheek, putting the lasagna on the counter.
“It’s Sarah’s lasagna. You don’t have to worry about it going to waste,” you tried.
“Oh, I know. But you know my cooking can’t compare to hers!” She complained mockingly. Sharing a laugh, you start helping about, feeling odd just standing there doing nothing. She lets you help but refuses to tell you why she wanted everyone to come over when you tried to  ask.
You had to give it to her though, she really had outdone herself. As you helped her take the food to the table, you were in awe. Tuna noodle casserole, beef stroganoff and mashed potatoes completed with the perfect buttermilk pie. The sight alone made your mouth water and tummy grumble.
At the delicious scent wafting from the dining table, everyone slowly poured in, each of them grabbing a plate and loading it up. You couldn’t wait to dig in, everything looked mouthwatering. Jokes were made and compliments given, you made to take a bite but were immediately stopped by the conversation taking place across from where you and Steve sat.
Bucky was urging Natasha to take a bigger helping of the mashed potatoes. While that was not particularly surprising, the next bit caused everyone to stop and stare.
“You really should take some more,” he says, adding another heap of the potatoes to her plate, “you’re eating for two now.”
You’d never heard silence quite this loud, everyone stopped midway, staring at Natasha and Bucky. Not Clint’s children of course, they couldn’t be bothered by much. They were busy stuffing their little faces with the feast Nat had prepared.
After a minute or two of utter silence, a cheer broke out and Natasha and Bucky sighed, exchanging small smiles of relief.
You, along with Laura and Wanda got up almost simultaneously, rushing around to envelop Natasha in a giant bear hug, who had started crying at this point. The boys were all congratulating Bucky, patting him on the back and making lewd jokes. The children seemed clueless as to what the fuss was all about but declared their merriment by making various noises as well.
When everyone has settled down, continuing with their meals, the relative silence is broken by Wanda, “We get to be godparents, right?” She questions, motioning between herself and Sam. That’s when Steve pipes up, “You guys are already godparents to Cooper. I think it’s our turn.”
“Exactly! What do you say Natty?” You wiggle your eyebrows playfully at her.
Huffing a laugh, she adds “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. Can we just enjoy this lovely meal I worked so hard to make?”
This shuts everyone up, again passing praises and compliments her way. Once the meal came to a close, it was already well past the kids' bedtime so Clint and Laura took off, followed by Sam and a rather tipsy Wanda. You stayed back to help Natasha clean up, despite her protests.
“You’re a pregnant woman and I’m already mad enough you did all of this by yourself. You should be ashamed of yourself Barnes, letting your pregnant wife do all the work,” you chastised.
“Sorry ma’am,” he says, holding his hands up in mock surrender. Steve chuckles but otherwise stays quiet.
When you’re done with most of the dishes and having packed up the few leftovers, you and Steve take your leave, walking back hand in hand in the silent darkness.
Your Steve, you know him well. And you can tell, just by one look in his face that there’s a lot on his mind. You know better from experience that when he’s in such moods, it’s best to leave him alone. He’ll tell you what’s on his mind before bed, you know it for sure.
So for now, you just walk home, swinging your joined hands back and forth as he’s lost in his own head.
Done getting ready for bed, you slip under the covers, waiting for Steve to join you. You don’t have to wait long, just as you pick up your book for some reading before bed, he slips under the covers, snatching the book from your hand. Your protest is short lived as he pulls you close into a bruising kiss.
His lips travel down your throat, trailing wet kisses down to your collarbone before you stop him as he moves to pull your silk slip over your head.
“What’s on your mind? You’ve been quiet all evening,” you grab his cheek in your hand, making him look at you.
He sighs loudly, moving away to sit back against the headboard.
“C’mon Steve, tell me.”
You move closer to him, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. Just as you’re about to urge him to say something he interrupts you.
“Let’s have a baby.”
You’re quiet for a while and he takes your silence as a request to continue.
“It’s been on my mind for so long. We’ll start with one. For now. I can’t wait for our home to be filled with little ones. I just —I’ve been thinking of this for so long. The fact that Nat and Bucky are expecting just solidified my decision. Don’t you want a baby?”
Swallowing, you plan out your words carefully before opening your mouth.
“We’re not ready Stevie. You know this. We’ve been married what, a year now? I thought we decided to wait,” you try.
“But I don’t want to wait anymore! Can’t you see? There’s no time like now to start trying,” he raises his voice and you flinch away from him.
“I don’t know Stevie. I’m really tired, we’ll talk about this tomorrow, okay?”
“No!” He shouts, “I want to talk about this now. We’re ready. I know we’re ready,” he reaffirms, grabbing you by your arms to hold you close.
“Steve, we’re not. We’re nowhere ready for a baby. We’ve just begun saving, can we even support a child right now?” You try to make him see some sense but it backfires tremendously.
“Really? I work so hard for you, for us, but that’s not enough for you, is it? You’re such an ungrateful little bitch, aren’t you?” His tone and his hurtful words immediately cause your eyes to fill, a couple errant tears slipping down. His grip on you is painful, almost bruising.
At the sight of your eyes brimming, tears streaking their way down your pretty face, his anger dissipates and his face fills with worry. He moves forward to cup your face in his hands, but you flinch away from him, pulling the covers back and stepping out of bed with your pillow in hand.
“I-uh- I’ll take the couch,” you stutter out, sniffling between every word.
“No, no, no. Baby I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean it. I’m so sorry, please come back to bed,” he says, scrambling out of bed as you continue towards the door.
“No, please baby. I’m sorry, please come back to bed,” he pleads, getting on his knees in front of you, wrapping his strong arms around your waist and holding you in place, his chin resting on your soft stomach.
He looks up at you with eyes quickly filling with tears, threatening to overflow. Your heart melts at the sight and you close your eyes, nodding your head slowly and he sighs, burying his face into your stomach, his tears causing your slip to dampen slightly.
“I’m so sorry baby, I didn’t mean it. I’m so sorry,” his voice comes out muffled but you understand him anyway.
You nod your head, telling him you’ll think about kids. You really would. That night he held you close after making love to you, almost as if he was afraid you’d slip out into the darkness in the middle of the night. He whispered the deepest of apologies and praises into your ear as he drew orgasm after orgasm from your prone body.
You knew he regrets what he said. You were well aware that he wanted a big family. Growing up, it had always been just him and his Ma. His father was hardly ever home and when he was, he was too drunk to care about much. He aspired to be everything that his father wasn’t, a real family man.
And you know you want to give him that but you need some time, you haven’t even been married that long. And you will think about it much more seriously now. What’s wrong with having a child? He works so hard for you, to make sure you’re not left needing anything, can’t you do at least this much for him? You’re home all day anyway, it’s not like you have a job like Nat. Plus, you’re lucky to have him and that he cares about you and what you want. Most men wouldn’t have bothered asking their wives if and when they wanted children. You find your resolve weakening. You will tell him that you’re ready to start trying and it’s unlikely you will fall pregnant on the first try. You have some time, you tell yourself all the while trying to smother that voice inside you that whispers, ‘You should wait’.
ranch hand!cooper x married!lucy au | 1950s
Her fingers trace lightly over his back, mapping the blemishes and scars he's accumulated over the years. "And this one?" He laughs. "Sugarfoot. Only time she's ever thrown me is when I was breaking her in." Warm breath ghosts over his shoulder blade as she giggles against him, goosebumps rising over his exposed skin. "Seems like you never make a good first impression. What about this?" It's foolish. He knows their time together is over for the day if he tells the truth, maybe even the week if the guilt has already been clawing at her, but he's never been one to shy away from a mistake. "That one… that one was from Monty. When we were kids." Lucy sighs. She's gentle, but the loss of her touch feels like the deepest cut he's ever got.
Aspiring actor Cooper Howard is struggling to make ends meet. After losing out on yet another dream role, he accepts an unexpected invitation from a childhood buddy; Monty's just started running his father-in-law's ranch, and working the summer away whilst drinking beer and shooting the shit with an old friend sure sounds better to Coop than waiting around to lose his room in LA. But Cooper gets more than he bargained for when he meets and falls head over heels for Monty's new young wife, Lucy MacLean.
