Mischaracterizing Nico di angelo as some 'shy gay boi' instead of a teen who was raised in homophobic, early dictatorship 1924 Italy is gross.
Nico isn't shy or embarrassed about his queerness the boy has internalized homophobia, 1920s Italy was not a safe place for queer people and Nico's early experience with queer people was likely seeing them belittled, berated or abused.
I would put actual money on saying that Nico's first reaction to his own or others queerness isnt embarrassment or confusion but revulsion, fear, shame or hate for it, especially after dealing with feelings of isolation and otherness from both Camp half blood and Camp Jupiter.
He isn't some cutesy shy boy who gets flustered he's a teenager struggling to accept and understand himself after, in his formative years, most likely being told what he feels is wrong, shameful or unnatural.
(also not to mention the culture shock it would've been for him to see queerness an gayness being accepted in the 21st century and in both ancient Greek/Rome an how he'd have to rationalize that with his already made world view)

Sunday 28th July • BBC 2 • Songs of Praise • 1:15pm • Olympic Faith
As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games begin, Laura Wright is in Edinburgh to celebrate the faith of Olympians and Paralympians past and present. And she speaks to HRH the Princess Royal to reflect on the legacy of Scottish sporting hero and Christian missionary Eric Liddell.
At St Giles’ Cathedral, Laura joins a special service commemorating Eric, 100 years after he dramatically won gold at the Paris 1924 Olympics. The story of Eric’s 400m triumph was later made famous in the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire, and Eric’s eldest daughter tells Laura about her father’s great faith and shares the story of him choosing not to run in his favoured 100m as the heats fell on a Sunday. And the Princess Royal, Patron of the Eric Liddell 100 initiative, reflects on Eric’s achievements and values, and what they can teach young people today.
We revisit the time Paralympian Kadeena Cox spoke to Radzi Chinyanganya about relying on God through tragedy and triumph. And there’s another chance to see Team GB swimmer Daniel Jervis sharing his testimony with Katherine Jenkins.
#i never watch songs of praise but this looks lovely#this was the day before her accident 🥺#princess anne#princess royal#eric liddell

A century after he won Olympic gold at the Paris Games in 1924, the story of Scottish runner, Eric Liddell, is set to inspire a new generation of athletes and believers, thanks to a new initiative that aims to share his inspiring life with a million people over the course of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Immortalised in the classic movie Chariots of Fire, whose stirring soundtrack has become a staple of sporting events, Liddell was known for his unwavering faith in God and his refusal to compromise his beliefs for anyone—even at the risk of missing…

Wednesday marked 100 days until the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
So I took a little walk to take a picture of the countdown near the Eiffel Tower to commemorate it too.
There were a few TV networks and it reminded me of Tiananmen Square before the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics.
A few interesting facts about the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics:
* This is the first parity games in history (5250 women and 5250 men will compete). It was also in Paris in 1900 that the Olympics Games were first opened to women (22 women vs 975 men)
* Since 2008 French Paralympians receive the same monetary award as their Olympian counterparts. Gold 80,000, Silver €40,000, Bronze €20,000. (NB since 2018 it’s also true for US athletes)
* The Olympics and the Paralympic Games shared the same emblem. This is a first. The Paralympic Games will also benefit from an exceptional media coverage with 300 hours of television broadcasting (compare to 150 hours in Tokyo, which was already a record).
* It´s the third time Paris is hosting the Olympics; 1900 and 1924 were the previous time. Until now London was the only city to have hosted the Olympics 3 times.
* In total France will have hosted the Olympics 6 times. The United States lead the world by hosting 8 Olympics Games

A Celebration of History, Innovation, and Sustainability in The Olympic Games Paris 2024
A Celebration of History, Innovation, and Sustainability in The Paris Olympic 2024 Games
The Olympic Games have always been an emblem of harmony, sporting excellence, and artistic festival. All these themes are more pertinent than ever as we approach the Paris 2024 Olympics. Set to run from July 26th to August 11th, 2024, the Olympics in Paris should be a sight to behold, with top athletes coming from all over the world. Here is why the Parisian games will be different.
A Historic Milestone
This achievement is significant because it has been exactly a century since France last staged an International Games in 1924. This one-hundred-year anniversary is a nod to the Olympics' long history and constant underlying values of competition and friendship.
Iconic Venues
One thing that sets the Paris 2024 Games apart is its use of famous city buildings for various events. Picture yourself at beach volleyball matches near the Eiffel Tower's foot, envisioning equestrian shows held at Versailles, or marathon runners passing through Élysées' stunning architecture. These historical sites will not only provide a majestic setting for matches but also demonstrate the culture of Paris.
Sustainability and Innovation
The forthcoming Paris 2024 Olympics could be one of the greenest events in history. The organizers intend to make the entire event carbon-neutral by reducing their environmental impact through several steps. This is possible since many facilities already exist, thus minimizing construction requirements. Furthermore, temporary and demountable structures will further reduce the carbon footprint. They intend to use such sports as a benchmark for future international competitions.
Inclusivity and Accessibility
Paris 2024 is inclusive and accessible at its core. Organizers are ensuring that all venues are fully accessible to persons with disabilities. Additionally, gender equality will take center stage, with an equal number of male and female athletes competing together, a first in Olympic history. Therefore, this commitment to diversity and inclusion guarantees that all will enjoy the Games.
New and Exciting Sports
Paris 2024 will introduce new sports catering to younger generations while taking into account current trends in sport. Surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing, and breaking (breakdancing) will become Olympic disciplines for the first time ever, adding a new dimension to the Games.
Public Participation
The Paris 2024 Olympics will include amateur runners in its marathon to broaden public involvement. Regular people would run on the same track that Olympians are racing on, fostering a deep link between the games and the community.
Cultural Extravaganza
The Paris 2024 Olympics will be more than just sports; it will also be a cultural festival. The city intends to organize cultural programs, exhibitions, and performances to showcase France's rich artistic heritage. This synthesis of sports with culture shall provide an all-rounded encounter for visitors and watchers globally.
Conclusion
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be groundbreaking events that respect the past while looking forward. The focus on sustainability, inclusivity, innovation, iconic venues, and the introduction of new events such as sports climbing make Paris 2024 one of those Olympics no one can forget about. As we wait for this historical moment, the Olympic spirit lives in everyone's heart, bringing us together.

Limerick's Olympian - I wrote a short newspaper article on John O'Grady (champion weight thrower from Limerick, Ireland) who carried the flag at Ireland's first Olympic Games in Paris in 1924.

Judge Howard P. Drew (June 28, 1890 - February 19, 1967) schoolboy Olympian, original “World’s Fastest Human,” scholar, soldier, lawyer, and first African American judge in Connecticut, was born to David and May Drew in Lexington, Virginia. The Drew family moved to New York City in 1895 and arrived in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904.
He entered Springfield High School but dropped out his freshman year to work to help support his family. He re-entered high school in 1910. As a high school junior, he was considered one of the fastest sprinters in the country. At the US Olympic Trials, he tied the World Record in the 100-meter dash.
At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, he decided to go for a record in the 100-meter semi-final but he stepped into a soft spot on the track and his left leg gave out. He managed to hop across the finish line in first place. No amount of therapy could get him ready for the finals. He was told he risked permanent injury, he watched teammate Ralph Craig win both the 100 and 200-meter races. He played on the US Olympic baseball team, sharing left-field responsibilities.
The 1916 Olympics were canceled due to WWI. He was the star of the “Pershing Olympics” held in France for the Allied Forces but by the time tryouts for the 1920 USA track team came, he was unable to make the team.
He attended USC and during his college days, he tied or set every World Record in the dash from 30 to 250 yards. The press called him the “Negro Speed Marvel, Colored Flyer, and Crack Colored Sprinter” but the title that was first given to him before anyone else and still used to this day was “World’s Fastest Man.”
He refused invitations to run at Boston Athletic Association track meets because they posted a notice that “no Negro would ever represent the association.” He graced the cover of the NAACP’s Crisis magazine – the special “Education Number.” He wrote newspaper articles on civil rights, fitness, and education. He studied law at Drake University and moved to Hartford, Connecticut to practice law. In 1924, he was elected Justice of the Peace and in 1928, he was appointed a night court judge in the city. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Reflection: A Pearl of Great Price
Two years ago, in July 2021, one great news during the unsavory times of the pandemic and of oppressive governance was the Olympic gold medal-winning lift of Hidilyn Diaz. She was the first Filipino athlete to win a gold medal since the country joined the Olympics in 1924. In America Magazine – The Jesuit Review, we read: “After winning the Philippines’ first Olympic gold, Hidilyn Diaz thanked God and raised up her Miraculous Medal.” In a statement, Archbishop Romulo Valles of Davao congratulated Diaz on behalf of the Philippine bishops. He wrote: “Her victory was captured through many lenses, and in one of those photos was her holding the gold medal and wearing a Miraculous Medal of Our Lady on her chest. We admire her devotion to the Blessed Mother as she carried in her victory her great faith in God. Hidilyn is a true weightlifter who draws her strength from her love for the country and a deep Catholic faith.”
As I looked at various pictures and video clips on the Internet, I came upon an interview of Hidilyn in 2008 when she was still seventeen. Chino Trinidad did a short documentary of the young Olympian. Her words gave me goosebumps. She was a young woman of faith who put God as her inspiration. She said in English mixed with the vernacular: “Someday, I will bear the flag of the Philippines as a weightlifter gold medalist in the Olympics.” Her words came true.
In 2008, she placed second to last in a field of twelve; in 2012, she did not finish the event; in 2016, she won silver. Then in 2020, she struck gold. Like the merchant in the parable, she went and gave all she had. This was the pearl of great price.
Seek your buried treasures and pearls of great price!
Fr. Joel Camaya, SDB
What is your buried treasure? What is the thing that you desire most in life? What pearl of great price have you achieved in life? What have you given up in order to acquire it?
Lord, may I truly seek the things that matter. Amen.
Prayer
… for a deep and profound respect for life, especially for the unborn.
… for the strength and healing of the sick.
… for the healing and peace of all families.
Finally, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.
GOD BLESS!

A Brief History of the World of Descent
A spoiler-free timeline of the 20th century onward meant to intrigue and inspire question.
Please feel free to ask anything that intrigues you. This is obviously not everything. Just the big important things that are well-known and won't spoil anything important.
November 11, 1918: World War I ends.
Summer, 1924: John Barner, a US Olympian, halves the world record time for the men's 1,500 metres, becoming the first known Metahuman. Barner will remain the most powerful known metahuman in the world until 1932.
1945: The UN is founded.
August 3, 1950: The seventh principle organ of the United Nations, the UN Metahuman Information & Action Council, is founded.
September, 1953: Following intense debate around the unauthorized and horrific ways metahumans were used and exploited in the Korean War, the UN moves to become the authority on metahumans worldwide.
March, 1958: The UN is voted into global power, becoming a superpower with an allegiance only to furthering humanity by humane methods.
August 3, 1969: The city of Veda, a sovereign nation that answers only to the UN itself, is founded on an island off the coast of British Columbia. It is dubbed "the city of the future" and the official home and research hub for metahumans.
1984: The South Korean Civil War begins. The UN, and many allied countries, refuse to interfere due to the events of the Korean War.
1989: The first iteration of the Metahuman Activation Curriculum is implemented in Veda. Trauma is no longer the only way to create Metahumans.
1993: The Korean Civil War ends, splitting South Korea into Southwest and Southeast Korea.
1994: Gertrude Grey, in Veda, becomes the first classified Alpha metahuman in the world.
September 11, 2001: Tragedy is averted. A metahuman named Jasveer Dhamija stops hijackers from crashing planes in the US. He becomes the second Alpha.
2011: Worldwide rankings of all Alphas and the top 100 Betas begin.
October 15, 2023: Taryn Radcliffe obtains Alpha status.
2024: An explosion in Scarborough kills hundreds and injures thousands more. Jasveer Dhamija is found at its centre.
2025: Entropy in Alpha metahumans is discovered. Jasveer's death is reclassified as an entropy death.
2026: Heroes are officially outlawed worldwide, instead of only in some countries. This is known as the "Anti Hero Legislation" by the UN.
August 8, 2029: Taryn Radcliffe succumbs to Entropy, killing thousands and destroying several square kilometres in Veda.
August 9-October 19, 2029: Sudden increases in power in Metahumans throughout Veda is recorded and will continue in less concentrated doses for the next four years, but only around the epicentre of Radcliffe's entropy death.
November 2, 2029: Alphas Metahumans are officially restricted to designated safe zones in cities throughout the world. Fear in Veda grows.
2031: Hugo Gilleras releases his theory of the Omega metahuman.

Hi! Have you ever thought about Nico and Hazel’s age discrepancy? She was 13 before Alaska, then she lived there for half a year (she moves in winter and dies in summer), she lives in CJ from Sept to Jun of the following year, she should’ve turned 14 in December. Whereas Nico is 11 in BotL, so two years later he’d be 13. The books say he’s Hazel’s older brother, but physically he’s around a year and a month younger than her
Hello! I always knew there was something fishy with Nico’s age, but I was too lazy to calculate and actually figure out what the problem was. :) But I never thought to compare his age with Hazel’s age!
Just writing out the facts here:
- Hazel turned 13 on December 17th, 1941, as explicitly mentioned in The Son of Neptune (pg 144 of the e-book). That would mean that her birth year is 1928. It also says that this date was the last day she lived in New Orleans.
- Hazel mentions that she joined Camp Jupiter in September (pg 99 of the e-book). When Percy meets Hazel, it is closer to the end of June (pg 87 of the e-book). Logically, Hazel should be 14 at this point. However, earlier in the book Percy mentions her has “maybe thirteen” (pg. 47 of the e-book).
- According to Rick, Nico was born January 28th, 1924.
- Another contradiction to Nico’s birth year is in The House of Hades, where Nico says that Hades and his mother met in Venice, Italy in the 1930s (pg. 222 of the e-book). He also tells Jason that he was “maybe six” around 1938, making his birth year actually around 1932, not 1924 (pg. 453 of the e-book). *Special thank you to @glassamphibians for bringing this point up.
- In The Titan’s Curse, Grover tells Percy that Nico is ten years old (pg 7). At the time of the meeting, Percy mentions that it was right before winter break (pg 1), which typically starts in the middle of December. Because Nico’s birthday is January, we can assume that he was either 10 or 11 at the time.
- In The Battle of the Labyrinth Percy says, “Nico was only ten, or maybe eleven by now, but he looked older.” (pg 40) This still makes sense, as Nico had not turned 11 yet when Percy last saw him. Percy sees Nico in the Iris message and makes this assumption in June (pg 1).
- The Last Olympian ends with Percy’s birthday, August 18th. Being that a year has passed since Percy’s assumption in The Battle of the Labyrinth, Nico should be 12 at the end of The Last Olympian.
- The next time we see Nico is in The Son of Neptune, which, again, starts in late June, almost a year since The Last Olympian ends. In accordance with our deductions so far, Nico should be 13 when he sees Percy again.
*From these facts so far, Hazel is actually, as @thefangirlsnewgroove said, around a year and a month older than Nico physically.
- Later in The Son of Neptune, it says about Nico, “He was also a kid from the 1940s. He’d been born only a few years after Hazel, and had been locked away in a magic hotel for decades.” (pg. 166 of the e-book)
It would seem, with just the birth years alone, that Nico is in fact older by year than by actual age. This could be why Hazel referred to him as her older brother. However, this theory contradicts the piece of information in the last bullet, that Nico was born a few years after Hazel. That doesn’t mean he has to be a few years younger than Hazel, because we know both were taken out of time for quite a while. It also contradicts the fact that Nico could’ve been born in 1932 like it says in The House of Hades, or in 1924 like Rick said. If he was born in 1932 then Hazel is older by Nico in year.
The one thing I couldn’t find was the actual quote where Hazel calls Nico her older brother. If anyone can find me that so I can add it to the post, that would be amazing!
Thanks for sharing! This was so much fun to compile. ;)
