Lovely to see a 1910 Craftsman finally intact. This one is in Spokane, WA, has 6bds, 2ba, and was reduced $10K to $574,500. I also like that it has a Tudor look, as well.
Tumblr media
Here's a small foyer with a coat closet.
Tumblr media
Isn't this nice to see? No gray, no painted-over wood, and no walls knocked down. Look at the pocket doors on the right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lovely, large sitting room has Craftsman era colors, the typical beamed ceiling and fireplace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at how large the dining room is. Double glass paned doors open into the room, it has the original wainscoting, and just look at this long built-in buffet. Love the ceiling, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What an interesting room. Two alcoves, beautiful wood and a built-in under the window. I think that this is a main floor primary bedroom.
Tumblr media
Cute 1/2 bath with original tile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wow, the kitchen looks like it's barely been touched. The cabinets look original and look at the unit next to the stoves- is that an old gas heater?
Tumblr media
Place for a table and look at the pantry. Amazing.
Tumblr media
Love that arch.
Tumblr media
Linen closet in the hall. So cool.
Tumblr media
The large primary bedroom has a window seat and a fireplace.
Tumblr media
Look at the closet. It's pretty big. Not sure what the window is for.
Tumblr media
Apparently the window opens to this room.
Tumblr media
Nice bedroom.
Tumblr media
This bedroom also has a nice walk-in closet.
Tumblr media
Nicely sized bedroom.
Tumblr media
Original bath literally untouched.
Tumblr media
On the way up to attic, there's more storage in the hall.
Tumblr media
Finished attic has lots of potential.
Tumblr media
Would make a great bowling alley.
Tumblr media
Look at the stone foundation in the basement.
Tumblr media
The front porch is huge.
Tumblr media
This is nice, it looks like they have a grill out here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pretty yard and a cute garage.

Stocking Stuffer 1/5: A Bajillion Random Painting Recolours
Happy Holidays to all! While I'm proud that last year I finally managed to achieve a longtime goal of sharing a full TS2 Advent Calendar, I'm simply not gonna be able to pull it off this year. Nonetheless, the holidlay spirit has encouraged me to finish up and share a couple of things before the end of the year! I'll be sharing five little gifts over the next few arbitrary days. First up: A BUNCH of Maxis painting recolours.
Tumblr media
One recolour each of A/B/C Stroke (yes, I still enjoy playing with these as three separate paintings) using vintage matchbook covers designed by Saul Bass for The Ohio Match Company.
Tumblr media
Two recolours +frames for Abstrutionism; "Poppy Cake" by Adolf Fényes (1910), and then this edit of Christina's World by Andrew Wyeth (1948) to include Bella Goth (the original Tumblr poster has deactivated).
Tumblr media
A recolour of Anonymous Masterpiece with these two digital paintings by user chestnutroan featuring their farmer Sim and his two alien daughters.
Tumblr media
One recolour of the Arghist Soldier with "Friday Nights" by Deborah DeWit (2006), perfect for your novel-enthusiast Sims' reading nook.
Tumblr media
One recolour of City Skyline with a fruit & veg painting by Twitter user snail_soup (you can buy a real print of this too if you like it!)
Tumblr media
One recolour of the Fourth Element wall scroll with "From Stardust to Stardust - Raccoon" by user ArtOfMienda.
Tumblr media
Four Vegetables recoloured with four deliciously juicy tomato paintings by artist Leah Gardner.
Tumblr media
Geometry 101 recoloured with a beautiful palette knife painting by Lynn Boggess.
Tumblr media
Two recolours of Grilled Cheese (you all know what Grilled Cheese looks like, c'mon); one vintage ad for Hollywood Diet bread which I cleaned/redrew to remove text/graphics, and then "Cloud Rows" by Ivan Eyre (2004).
Tumblr media
In The Beginning (+frame) recoloured with "Little Thief" by Courtney / Trash Kitty Art (also available as an affordable IRL print).
Tumblr media
Kitten vs. Yarn (+frame) recoloured with this goache painting by user ieafy.
Tumblr media
"Until Tonight" by Mark Grantham (2019) slapped on Lady On Red.
Tumblr media
Two recolours of Living Room; "Midwestern Summer Fun" by user ink-the-artist (you may wanna zoom in for a surprise), then "Girl On A Swing" (2000) by Andrew Macara.
Tumblr media
One recolour of Marketing Print with the Beatles as drawn by other Beatles. I don't remember who drew who because I'm actually not much of a Beatles fan but I thought these sketches were really darling.
Tumblr media
In Memory of Johnny Gnome (+frame) recoloured with a piece by Emma Roulette.
Tumblr media
A recolour of My First Holiday with art from Twitter user heikala_art.
Tumblr media
On Pointed Toes (+frame) recoloured with this digital painting by Twitter user catwheezie.
Tumblr media
I fell in love with this Guinness ad so I tweaked it from the photo to fit on the Route 66 poster, then made an accompanying Simlish option.
Tumblr media
A single Scruffles recolour (+frame) with this adorable cow illustration by Twitter user poodlewool.
Tumblr media
Four recolours of the Sim Noir pop art print; three pieces by Al Parker I found through this Tweet (with some English removed) and then an edit of the original painting to look passingly familiar...
Tumblr media
Two recolours (+frames) of Snoozing Enemies; "The Cat on the Pillow" by Adolf von Becker, and "Sleeping Sasha" by Lena Rivo.
Tumblr media
Stiller Life (+frame) recoloured with this oil painting of McDonalds by artist Noah Verrier.
Tumblr media
Two recolours (+frames) of Stumped Hound; "Shadow" by Tianyi Zhou and "cat falling off table" by user anasauruss.
Tumblr media
The Muse recoloured with this Juxtapoz magazine cover by artist Josh Courlas.
Tumblr media
And lastly, three recolours of Untitled (the Bella Goth pop art painting) with works by Hiroshi Nagai.

You and Chris having an argument when both of you having a bad day at work.
Chris Redfield x female reader
p/s: angst with good ending, a bit fluff, Chris Redfield RE8
There was a day where you just really exhausted from your work and you grabbed a coffee after work with your team mates which majority of them are guys. You work as an architect far from your husband’s career as a captain of BSAA. You are just a normal citizen. Accidentally met Chris Redfield, fall in love and married.
Chris was not there. He was in his mission for three months somewhere in Europe. You have used to be alone when he was away. You are very understanding despite being a normal people which some doesn’t understand their job to save the world. You had seen so many scars and heartbroken version of Chris. You had been married for almost a year and a half now and Chris trust you the most.
But not that day. The day you swear to God how could Chris think that way of you. He saw you when he was making his way to buy you some flowers as he was back so suddenly and try to make a surprise. You were sitting at the corner of the cafe with 4 other guys at the table, laughing and smile widely just to wash a stressful day away. You dont’ see him though. Staring at you with a bit of jealousy and stunned. You forgot to tell him that you went out after work and didn’t bother to even check you phone that time.
1 hour passed and you dismissed yourself as the time was already 1910. You was unlocking your apartment grill when you saw a pair of leather shoes outside of your door. ‘Is Chris back?’ you asked yourself and fasten to unlock the door.
The house was dark but you saw a big figure sitting at your couch from the light outside. You know its Chris.
“Baby?” you called him out as you switched the light on.
There he was. Sitting and just staring at the floor. Like spacing out.
“Chris?” you approached him. He slowly turned his head to you. You can see a bouquet of white tulips beside him. Your favorite flower. But the most obvious thing in you saw was his dark eyes. He looked very tired. He was and you know it.
“You okay baby? You’re home” you kneed on the floor, placing one of your hand on his biceps and the other on his left knee, giving him a warm smile. Your eyes started to water. You missed him so much but something seems of. He did not even move.
You gave him a hug. Placing your arms around his neck. Something was definitely off since he did not even give you a hug back.
“Is everything okay love?” you asked again and back to your knee.
“Chris, say something” you shook him slightly. Starting to panic.
“Was it so much fun with those guys?” Chris asked coldly but it struck you to the heart. It shattered to pieces. Your face started to wrinkled. He saw you what?
“You saw me with my friends?” he nodded later.
“I was hanging out with my friends after a bad day at work. That’s all. What? Are you mad about that?” you stood up. Feeling unbelievable.
“It seems like you are better with or without me” he turned his head to the left. “Laughing and smile sweetly” he adds.
“Chris! Are you serious?” you started to rage. He was just being jealous right?
He stood up, walking to your bedroom that you share sweet and sad moments together. You followed him. “Chris, we are still haven’t done talking”. you stood behind his large figure. He took off his coat, prepared to go shower.
“Redfield! You just came back and decide to assume shits to me? Are for real? Aren’t you supposed to ask me first before make a conclusion by yourself?!” Chris shut the bathroom door, leaving you speechless in the center of your bedroom.
“CHRIS!”
==============================================
You was squeezing yourself in your short and pajamas on your guestroom’s bed. Crying yourself out. Why does Chris being so cruel to you? Does it has to be such a big deal need to be a topic to fight for? Did he accuse you for being unfaithful to him?
You are loyal to him. You are sure of that. For you, Chris is a perfect person you could ever asked from God. He is matured, reliable and caring. But why does today he had to be such a jerk to say does words to you when he just came back home. Came back to you. Again, you balled your eyes out.
You cried to the point you feel sleepy. Thank God tomorrow was weekend so your workers will not see your puffy eyes. Your body was facing the wall when you heard the bedroom door’s opened but you already about to doze off.
You can feel Chris’s figure stand beside the bed. He sat down beside you and just staring at you black hair. One thing about you that he loves the most is your thick and black hair. He loves it and admires it so much because it was your natural hair color and it was so elegant. He remembered when the first time he saw you your hair was ruby red.in the end of it You dyed your hair just for fun that time but time flew by your hair already turned to the original color.
He caressed your hair. He felt a shit tone of guilt to you. He was also having a bad day at his base. He was back from Europe couple of days ago because the mission was a success but just a personal problems at the HQ. He immediately came home to you but to see you happy with other. He felt that he might ruining your day with his problems yet he was feeling jealous when others sees your beautiful laugh and your smile. Its wide with your red lips. Such a kissable lips for him.
“Hey honey. I...I am... so sorry for saying those words to you. I know I break your heart. I was just.. having a bad day too I should communicate to you. I know I am wrong.” He sighed. Still stroking your hair gently. ‘Fuck, why did I do that to her? She is the love of my life’ he cursed himself.
“Honey, please forgive me.” He stopped. Taking his time.
“I have to admit... yeah, I think jealous is the best word. I feel jealous when other sees how beautiful my wife are. Goddamn it... I...I just wanted to keep you by myself.” He slumped his face on the mattress. Didn’t know or care if you heard it or not because he knows you are likely to be asleep by now. He can always confess again like how he proposed you to be his wife.
Losing you again is not a choice.
He turned his head up when he scenes a movement from you. You turned your body facing him with a half puffy eyes. You both stared each other for a seconds.
“You heard me?” he asked, almost whispering.
“You got me when you touched my hair” you smile thinly.
Chris smile slightly too.
“I’m sorry love. Didn’t mean to break your heart” He said again. A bit clearer. He looked so helpless in his light grey colored PJ which made you though was cute. Big figured guy in a PJ. Kinda turned you on.
“You know you can text me when you’re home so that I can go straight to you after work right?” you said. Voice a bit raspy. He bow down.
“I’m still kinda crappy in making a surprise for you don’t I?” he smirk. You laughed. You lightly pulled his arms so he stood up and joining you on the guestroom’s bed. He laid beside you and you facing each other.
“Am I forgiven?” he asked while staring at your eyes like a puppy.
“Yes you are Captain Redfield.” you smiled widely with a cheeky giggle. “And please don’t give me a silent treatment. I hate it so much” you uttered, low.
“Yes princess. I am sorry, I promised we will always talk it out first.”
Both of you smiled warmly. His large hand caressed you cheek and so did your hand.
“Now give me back my welcome home hug” you demanded with a smirk.
Chris chuckled and gave you huge and tight hug. The best hug you ever had in your life will be always with Chris. It feels like you can feel his love for you flows out of his heart and absorbed into your whole body. Hoping that the love will last.
p/s; still shitty at making a story. hope you enjoy.

Ms. Raven the Eccentric Engine [NWR AU]
Tumblr media
History
Ms. Raven (or Vanessa to give this eccentric engine her proper name) was built in 1910 by the Darlington Works for the North Eastern Railway. She worked out of Gateshead for a spell before being loaned out to the North Western Railway in 1922 to cover for Edith being out of action. As traffic demands ramped up in the mid twenties, it was decided to extend her loan. She managed the Wild Nor' Wester when Gordon was ill, as well as fast passenger services and mail trains. Some say that all the constant high speeds got to her smokebox, as the others found her quite an odd engine indeed. She would ramble endlessly about conspiracies, French spies and shadow governments. The other engines quickly learned to tune her out, however.
During the Second World War, Ms. Raven was recalled to Gateshead to help with the war effort. Very little from her war service is documented and she refuses to speak of it. She was returned to Sodor in 1945 and bounced between engine sheds until 1949 when she was stabled full-time at Tidmouth. She continued with her pre-war duties until 1958, when British Railways recalled her to Darlington for scrap. Not one to let one of his most faithful engines meet the torch, he purchased her and had her sent to Crovan's Gate Works, where she was outshopped in NWR Lined Black and given the number 20.
From 1960, her workload on the express began to slowly decrease until 1980 when she was replaced entirely. Feeling hurt and betrayed by the loss of her favourite job, Ms. Raven started to act out. She'd get rough with wagons, be sluggish to respond to her driver's controls and occasionally outright refuse to steam. This all came to a head in 1981 when she purposely derailed outside of Tidmouth Yard, fouling the points to the shed. Sir Topham Hatt I came up to her and told her in no uncertain words that she had to get her act together or she'd be sold to a museum. Swiftly pulling herself together, Ms. Raven accepted her new life hauling fast passenger and goods trains, though she secretly envies Pip and Emma.
Personality
Ms. Raven is a very eccentric individual indeed, she'll talk your head, smokebox or grille off about whatever conspiracy theory her driver found her recently. Despite being a steam locomotive, she technically has an online presence through her driver, who documents her ramblings on a blog website. She's usually quite reclusive, but seems to have taken a large liking to Alderney. She's usually quite wary of newcomers, often citing one of her numerous conspiracies. All in all, Ms. Raven may be eccentric and odd, but can have her nice moments too.

My first big job was carefully dismantling a dead rich person's house. I was 16, freshly "emancipated", and found the gig through a junkyard I worked at for day labor. I was hired by a neighbor of the deceased, who'd hated the dead one with particular relish, and celebrated his death by scooping up his property at like, the instant of death. He'd stand there and chuckle evilly while I worked. They'd been rival country music producers.
The dead one had bricked up his entire grounds, front and back. Acres of expensive bricks, variously placed, like he'd just bought pallets of expensive bricks every so often when it occurred to him, and put them wherever was next in his project. I found a marble Venus in what had probably once been a garden back there, surrounded by art nouveau benches & rotted arbors. One hundred per cent of the interior of this gigantic fucking mansion had been hideously destroyed by a pack of dogs, descended from some expensive breed, that he kept inside - generation after generation of them -! So all the heating ducts were fully rusted through from dog pee & the place was befouled beyond endurance. They'd all had to be "taken away", said the boss. I wore a respirator for indoors-days. Fuuuuck though, There was a grand piano from the 1910s in there, in the middle of a library's worth of ruined books. Tons of once-outrageous furniture that, had it been cared for, would have been worth millions. Silent Hill shit right there in the middle of Nashville Tennessee. New owner had notions of salvaging and reselling a lot of the contents but maaaaaan, he was out to lunch on that one. Didn't stop him from cataloguing every little thing he could find and chuckling evilly over it. Creep.
Nuns would patrol that area for whatever reason; two of them watched me work several times and would comment to each other. I thought it might be because of my deathrock look so I waved to them one day; they immediately both turned to me and waved happily, so I went over and asked them how they were doing; they eventually told me conspiratorially, "we're just happy he's gone" ~!! har.
It took a long time; I got muscles from all the unbricking, for a while, which helped with the music stuff I was into. Once he got used to me the boss started giving me the history of each little offense the dude had committed against his neighbors while he was alive - it all clicked into place at once for me: aha: cocaine.
A friend of the boss came over a couple of times to appraise stuff; I ended up working for that guy next. He ran a cable TV station out of his apartment and made big drug buys about twice a month. His cousin ran a bar & grill on Broadway. I ended up working for the exact same set of dudes years later in Atlanta - futons! and big drug buys.
Everyone assumed I was a lot older than I was because I was tall and constantly maxxed out with chains and garb and the whatnot. Fun times! Kinda weird how much I drank in bars before turning 18 or 21. Different days

Actual American Foods that Non-Americans Find Strange
So, after I saw a frankly shit poll made by a British person in response to a different Brit poking fun at their own food, I decided to make an actual poll of American foods that were:
a) relatively widely available and popular (some are more regional than others, but I tried to keep it to just a few) b) uniquely American in origin* c) not intrinsically tied to race or class in the US (i.e. no soul food, fast food, or products like Twinkies)
Reblog if you vote!
Explanations and descriptions below the cut.
California Roll: invented in California in the '70s, this is a uramaki style sushi roll with crab (real or imitation), cucumber, and avocado wrapped in nori and sushi rice.
Taco Salad: Invented in Texas in the '60s. A fried taco shell/bowl filled with lettuce and taco toppings such as rice, shredded chicken or pork or ground beef, salsa, cheese, guacamole, beans, sour cream, diced tomatoes, etc.
Rocky Mountain Oysters: Deep-fried bull testicles. A bit cheating, because this is eaten all through North America, not just the US, but it's still a very popular(?)/common thing in the more Western states.
Cincinnati Chili: Invented by Greek immigrants in the 1910s, this is more of a sauce than a thick chili. A meat and tomato paste commonly served over spaghetti, often with options like cheese, beans, and/or onions.
Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich: A staple of general kid lunches. A sandwich of peanut butter and a fruit jelly of one's choice. (Peanut butter is not really a big thing outside the US, so I had to include it.)
Bananas Foster: Invented in New Orleans in the '50s. This is cooked bananas and ice cream with a butter-and-brown-sugar rum sauce that gets flambéed when it's served.
Corn Dog: Invented c. the 1930s, this is a hot dog dipped in a cornmeal batter and fried.
Root Beer: Root beer (distinct from sarsaparilla) was invented sometime in the 1840s- this dark soda has a distinct taste that often comes across as medicinal to those who didn't grow up with it.
American Cheese: Invented in 1916 by James L. Kraft. This is made from traditional cheeses and processed into a uniform cheese- the slices are sort of plasticky, but regular slices from the deli counter are pretty normal. Especially common for grilled cheese or cheeseburgers.
I picked all these foods as things I have eaten (except for the Rocky Mountain Oysters...).
*American dishes are, by their nature, almost entirely made from the experiences of immigrants bringing traditional foods over and adapting them to local ingredients and tastes. These dishes I chose have some international inspirations, but aren't things that one would find in the Old Country.

Today was a pretty chill day. I wish I had like fully relaxed and enjoyed that part a little more. But it was still a really nice day.
I didn't sleep amazing. I kept waking up tangled in the nightgown slip dress I wore to sleep. And I felt a little off. Kept waking up every couple hours like I was missing something. I don't remember James leaving but I do remember their alarm going off.
When I got up for real I didn't want to be awake. But I also didn't want to be in bed anymore. I just felt bleh.
It would shake off pretty quickly though. I got washed and dressed and I felt cute. I like this dress. I like the hem detail a lot.
Then I started getting messages. 95 collapsed?? Apparently a truck was on fire and melted the beams. But the videos look like the end of the world. I saw a post after that that talked about soft apocalypse. How we are told it's going to be one big event but more and more it feels like we will have a million of these small, soft cataclysmic events. And it just gave me a lot of pause.
I would spend a few minutes gathering myself and then I was off. I drove to the grocery store and got all the things I needed for my cheesecake pudding and my dip. I also got myself yogurts for lunch this week and some flat bread that was on clearance. And then right back home.
I spent some time taking the stone out of the cherries and cutting the strawberries. Everything I made was no bake so it was easy, just needed to be assembled. Cutting the fruit took the longest part. But it was fun. I was having a nice time.
I added more water to my fish tanks. And then made a little lunch snd played animal crossing for a bit. I redesigned a little outside kitchen that was previously set up for Thanksgiving. And then I would just spend some time lounging on the couch.
Our neighbor, Nick, texted to ask to borrow a screwdriver. And we chatted in the hall when he came down to get it. And I would just go back to hanging out on the couch.
I would get back in on working on my proposal document for the Native American program. And would send that off to camp. Nervous! I hope they like it. They don't have to agree with me about everything but I have some hopes. And if they say yes I'm going to have a lot of work ahead of me!!
Once that was sent off I spent some time sorting all of our change. First from my market cash box. And then into jars. I also decided to go through all of our pennies and ended up finding 4 hay pennies. Including on from 1910!! Cool! This penny has been through so much!!
I put my hay pennies to the side. And spent some more time watching videos and sipping water. I would eventually move out to the fire escape, one the sun wasn't on it anymore. And sat with Sweetp and watched the world.
I would come back inside and chill and wait for James. Who came home with French fries for me!
They would get a quick shower and got dressed. They looked so cute. And then we were off to the end of the year party at Ashley's.
Her house was so cute. It's actually in one of the areas we are looking at houses so that was cool. And it was super nice seeing all my friends from work I havent seen in forever. The old people's especially. I got lots of hugs.
It was nice sitting outside. Both in chairs and sometimes in the grass. Talking nonsense. I even made friends with my old coworker, Kathleen's, son James. Who realized I would listen to him and judge how long jumps pretty fast so I kept giving I'm honest scores (4 out of 10) and when he got better I gave him better scores.
James made me a bugerless burger. Which was just cheese lettuce tomato on a bun and grilled. And I enjoyed all the sides. Well the ones that weren't crab based. So many crab based things. Really though the conversations were the best parts.
Meril and her friend and her husband came and it was fun hanging out with them. And while a storm is coming in, it was beautiful out and I just felt great.
Soon the young people started to leave. I would stop and chat with Mike about his own wedding planning. They have looked at 17 venues!! Wild. And then me and James would grab our dishes and headed home.
I started getting a light headache so I was glad to be going home.
When we got back here I was messing with James in the car and we were giggling a lot over screaming music. And then when we got inside I took a shower and then James insisted we do some stretching. Which did help a lot honestly. I cut sweetp's nails, which he yelled at me about the whole time but sat still for most of it.
And now we are in bed. I feel dehydrated so I'm going to drink some water and get ready for bed.
Tomorrow I am not sure what my day holds. I think I'm going to camp but that is very unclear. I do have a rhumatologist appointment and then in the evening I'm picking some people up from the airport. I hope it is a nice day, even if it's raining.
Sleep well everyone. Be safe!!

In a revolution in Portugal the monarchy was overthrown and a republic was declared on October 5, 1910.
 Portugal Republic Day
Portugal’s Republic Day is celebrated on October 5 every year and is also known as ‘Implantation of the Republic’ in Portugal. This important day marks the overthrow of the monarchy, the House of Braganca, in 1910. The monarchy had been in power since the 11th century and was replaced by a republican form of government in a bloodless revolution. It also brought about civil and religious liberties. It is a public holiday with schools, state offices, and some restaurants being closed. Like other public holidays in Portugal, Republic Day is not moved to a weekday if it falls on a weekend.
History of Portugal Republic Day
Portugal’s Republic Day commemorates the deposition of the centuries-old Portuguese monarchy and the establishment of the First Portuguese Republic. It was the result of a coup led by the “Portuguese Republican Party.”
By 1910, the Portuguese Kingdom was in the middle of a crisis with people increasingly resenting the royal family due to the 1890 British Ultimatum which demanded the retreat of the Portuguese military forces from the territory between the colonies of Angola and Mozambique, the royal family’s expenses, the assassination of the King and his heir, transforming religious and social views, instability of political parties, Joao Franco’s dictatorship,  and the regime’s inability to adapt to modern times. This national anger helped proponents of the Republican Party to take advantage of the situation. The party skillfully presented itself as the only one capable of returning the country to its original glorious status and advancing its progress.
The military was reluctant to fight the nearly two thousand soldiers and sailors that rebelled between October 3 and 4, and so the Republic was proclaimed the next day from the Lisbon City Hall. A provisional government led by Teófilo Braga led the country till the Constitution was approved, marking the beginning of the First Republic. National symbols like the national anthem and the flag were changed, along with some changes in civil and religious liberties.
The deposed King Manuel II departed from Ericeira and lived out the rest of his days in exile. At the time, Portugal was worried about being recognized by other countries as most European states were monarchies. But soon enough, through skillful diplomacy by the Foreign Affairs Minister, the country was officially recognized by the United Kingdom, France, China, Spain, Italy, Russia, and others.
Portugal Republic Day timeline

An extremely violent earthquake of a magnitude of 8.5 to nine befell Lisbon in 1755, causing a widespread fire and a huge tsunami that nearly wiped out the city.
It abolished life imprisonment in 1884 and no one has been executed for a crime since 1846.
Why Portugal Republic Day is Important
It marks the overthrowing of the monarchy
National pride
It was a bloodless revolution
The people of Portugal were growing increasingly resentful of the monarchy for various reasons. The revolution finally put an end to it and paved the way for a different form of government.
It’s a great day to show off your pride in being Portuguese. Take this day to immerse yourself in your culture and learn more about the many events that have made Portugal the great nation it is today.
It’s commendable to note that unlike many other coups and revolutions in the region, the event involved no bloodshed. This serves as an important lesson even in today’s day and age that not all revolutions need casualties.

It’s National Monte Cristo Day!
It’s believed that the #MonteCristo evolved from the French sandwich, the Croque Monsieur, invented around 1910 and traditionally made with ham between two pieces of brioche-like bread, topped with Gruyere and baked. From 1930 to 1960, items like the #FrenchSandwich and #FrenchToastedHamAndCheese started appearing in American cookbooks. And thus emerged the Monte Cristo!
While the Monte Cristo typically offers a savory sandwich, sometimes powdered sugar and jam preserves sweeten it, too. To achieve the crispy outer coating, chefs dip the prepared sandwich in an egg batter. Then they either pan-fry or deep-fry the sandwich to perfection.
Occasionally, variations include sliced turkey and different types of cheese. Other options for serving are available, too. For example, some like to serve a grilled version. Another version may be served open-faced and heated under a grill or broiler.

Named after one of Dallas’ most notorious bar owners, Jack Ruby’s Saloon & Grill welcomes you to the West End Historic District, the oldest part of Dallas.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
High hopes, harsh realities collide in downtown Dallas' West End
On a recent tour of the West End Historic District, restauranteur Jay Khan pointed out the many vacant storefronts.
"They moved," Khan said, pointing at a Market Street site that once housed Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse.
"They’re gone," he said, motioning toward the former site of Gator's Dallas.
"They shut down," he added, pointing at the former space of the restaurant Oasis.
Some businesses have stuck around, of course.
They include Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse and Khan’s own RJ Mexican Cuisine.
But decades of departures are now being compounded by a significant drop in tourist traffic and safety concerns.
The challenges of the West End aren't new.
Landowners and business people have worried about the district's decline ever since its heyday in in the 1980s and '90s.
But with several issues now coming to a head, many in the area have called for a new approach.
youtube
Khan bought into the West End more than 20 years ago with the opening of RJ Mexican Cuisine.
He now owns four restaurants on the same street: 3Eleven Kitchen and Cocktails, Chet's Dallas and the newest addition, The Liam’s Steakhouse.
Khan is optimistic about the West End's potential, and he's doubling down with plans to open three more concepts this year.
One will take over the old Sonny Bryan's space while another will replace the neighboring Oasis.
Kahn declined to go into too much detail, including the location of the third restaurant, but by the end of 2024, he could have seven restaurants along Market Street.
Khan said he's already invested about $10 million into his current restaurants.
Throw in the three still being planned and it's closer to $25 million to $30 million.
His experience so far with Liam’s, which he said cost between $800,000 and $900,000, exemplified to Khan some of the struggles of this area.
"My profit margins are not great right now," he said. "But I've been here for 30-some years already and I don't have any plans to leave this area anytime soon. That's why I'm putting so much in it."
West End
The West End got its start as a warehousing and manufacturing district in the 1910s.
Beyond tourism
The West End Historical District covers roughly 30 blocks, or about 67 acres, on the western edge of downtown Dallas.
It's full of converted warehouses with offices, stores and restaurants, as well as hotels, apartments, museums and landmarks.
It's a major tourist attraction, from reminders of the Kennedy assassination such as the the Sixth Floor Museum to family-friendly attractions including the Dallas Aquarium and Museum of Illusions to the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum.
"Those museums have kept us alive and afloat," said Phillip Honoré, president and executive director of the West End Association, a group of merchants and real estate professionals working to promote the area's economic health.
Tumblr media
The area could benefit greatly from the nearly $3 billion redevelopment of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.
West End
Jay Khan and Phillip Honoré believe the West End's best days are ahead of it — if the right investments can be made.
But in the meantime, businesses that depend heavily on tourists have seen a noticeable drop in traffic.
Honoré said an area that would see around 6 million visitors in its heyday a few decades ago now gets about 2 million.
Folks in the West End attribute that to the Covid-19 pandemic as well as perceptions, both valid and overblown, about the area's safety.
The West End Association and Downtown Dallas Inc. are working on a marketing plan to promote the area to Dallasites who forget it’s there.
The nonprofits want to host more family-friendly events to draw in crowds.
Additionally, Honoré believes the West End needs more shopping options.
"My recommendation to the property owners … we need some retail because people like to shop, eat and relax," he said.
The two groups also partnered on a $500,000 project to increase street lighting in the area, and they've also been working to increase security patrols.
"If people feel safe, they will come to the businesses," Honoré said.
West End champions see a way forward.
The district has many advantages.
That includes its rich history and being more walkable than most of downtown, owing to its development in the early 20th century, before cars were ubiquitous.
West End transit
The West End is served by Dallas Area Rapid Transit trains.
Bridging past and present
The West End developed as a factory and warehouse district in the 1910s because of proximity to railroads.
Goods were distributed from the area to the rest of Dallas.
But as city and state leaders prioritized the highway system around the middle of the century, the prominence of the West End faded.
And after President John F. Kennedy was killed in Dealey Plaza in 1963, the West End, not to mention Dallas more widely, became indelibly linked with one of the bleakest chapters in America's history.
In the aftermath of the assassination, many civic leaders advocated for demolition of the buildings associated with the national tragedy, according to timeline on the West End Association's website.
Mayor Erik Jonsson, influential merchant Stanley Marcus and others, however, championed protecting the history these buildings embodied.
In 1975, the City of Dallas officially designated the district as historic, preventing the development of skyscrapers and planting the seeds of a tourism destination.
In the 1980s, the district evolved into an entertainment hub, with hot spots such as the famed Starck Club, Planet Hollywood and Cinema 10.
That glitz and glamour began to fade in the 1990s, and many hands were wrung about what should be done.
In the early 2000s, the historic district created a partnership with DDI to improve the cityscape by patching up roads and sidewalks and encouraging residential development.
There have been lots of grand plans for the West End.
Tumblr media
A few years ago, the Dallas Innovation Alliance pushed for the creation of an innovation district, with historic buildings and warehouses repurposed as office space and parking lots converted into parks.
That's happened, to some extent — some large corporate tenants call the area home while West End Square is a handsome pocket park and public meeting space that replaced an old surface lot.
West End Square
Tumblr media
New York-based Field Operations transformed a parking lot in the West End into a park and meeting place, the handsome West End Square.
In 2015, Plano-based Granite Properties Inc. purchased a 1903 brick-and-timber building at Munger Avenue and North Record Street that decades ago housed Brown Cracker and Candy Co. and later Sunshine Biscuit Co.
Tumblr media
The real estate company spearheaded a $77 million redevelopment that turned the property into a modern office building while maintaining its historic character.
Now known as Factory Six03, it's landed major tenants including the C1 Innovation Lab affiliated with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, a Sam's Club technology hub and coworking provider Common Desk.
The district has also seen new development, like The Luminary, a 169,000-square-foot office building that opened in 2019.
Granite Properties Senior Managing Director Paul Bennett called Factory Six03 an exemplary success that's 90% leased.
But he agreed the biggest challenge to promote the area starts with increasing retail traffic.
West End Post card
This postcard from the early 1900s shows what the Brown Cracker and Candy Company looked like in its prime — now it's the Factory Six03 office development.
What's next
Despite that long history, some West End boosters have at times felt the area is overlooked by City Hall.
"One of the first things that the stakeholders said to me was that they felt like they were the stepchild of the downtown area, that they felt neglected," Honoré recalled about when he joined the association in 2020. "They felt like they didn't have the attention that other parts of downtown [receive]. … I said that's something we can fix."
The City of Dallas did not respond to a request for comment.
DDI supports the vision of Honoré and others to revitalize the West End, said Shalissa Perry, the downtown group's chief marketing officer.
"We work with the stakeholders to really help bring their vision to fruition," she said. "We are really careful not to plan for our districts but plan with them."
Some big, empty buildings could seen new life.
The old Starck Club space, a building just north of Woodall Rodgers Freeway that actually dates back to the late 1800s, is up for sale and being marketed as both a renovation/expansion or redevelopment opportunity.
Tumblr media
Phillip Honoré, president and executive director of the West End Association, said stakeholders in the district felt overlooked when he arrived in 2020 but that investments by his organization and the city have boosted the district's profile.
The old Spaghetti Warehouse building, which has been vacant since the restaurant closed in 2019 following a 47-year run, is gaining some interest from property owners.
Getting that building "back up and running" would "really help" the district, Honoré said.
He said plans are being discussed and that something could happen within 12 to 18 months.
He wasn't sure of its next use but didn't think it would be a restaurant.
While the West End has seen many different eras, Khan and Honoré believe its best is yet to come: a neighborhood full of family-friendly activities, booming stores and restaurants and thriving businesses, one that balances history with the constant development pressures of Dallas.
They want to see a district that doesn't just merely survive, but one that flourishes and thrives.
Honoré called the West End "a gateway into the city."
"It tells its story and the story is important," he said.
West End
The West End is known as a museum district — home to the Dallas Aquarium, the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum and the Sixth Floor Museum.

"Bamboozled" (2000) is a comedy-drama written and directed by Spike Lee about two homeless street performers who agree to partake in a television network show where they perform in blackface. Spike Lee examines the racist depiction in Hollywood movies featuring Black people in satirical form. Blackface became popular in American Minstrel shows during the early 1800s, many years before emerging in Hollywood movies. But in the early 1900s, blackface appeared more in films predominantly played by White people until Black people, such as Bert Williams, began earning film opportunities in the mid-1910s.
There were two primary types of blackface in early Hollywood. The first was in clown form, using some form of black paint or polish (most common in Minstrel shows), and the other was White people portraying Black people in movies with black makeup. Negative stereotypes in Hollywood movies evolved further into characters such as Lincoln Perry (a.k.a. Stepin Fetchit) or Mantan Mooreland, the central inclination of Lee's film.
Throughout the movie, there are several examples of racist depictions of Black people in film and cartoon form. However, the film analyzes corporate dishonesty, the contentious rap militant group fed up with the show's racist content, and the easily appeased audience. The actors performed very well on a complicated topic. Unfortunately, the film flopped at the box office, grossing $2.5 million on a $10 million budget. The movie requires context and understanding. It's an educational piece of artwork not only from the premise of the film but also the technical mastery in editing and cinematography. The soundtrack was a mixture of hip-hop and R&B, peaking at #60 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Director: Spike Lee Writer: Spike Lee
Starring Damon Wayans, Savion Glover, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tommy Davidson, Michael Rapaport, Thomas Jefferson Byrd, Paul Mooney, Sarah Jones, Gillian White, Susan Batson, Yasiin Bey, M.C. Serch, Gano Grills, Canibus, DJ Scratch, Charli Baltimore, Craig muMs Grant
Storyline Under pressure to help revive his network's low ratings, television writer Pierre Delacroix (Damon Wayans) hits on an explosively offensive idea: bringing back blackface with The New Millennium Minstrel Show. The white network executives love it, and so do audiences, forcing Pierre and his collaborators to confront their public's insatiable appetite for dehumanizing stereotypes.
Available on Blu-ray and streaming services.

Exploring the Charms of Korean BBQ: A Culinary Journey into Flavor and Tradition
Tumblr media
Korean BBQ, with its sizzling grills, tantalizing aromas, and communal dining experience, has captured the hearts and taste buds of food enthusiasts worldwide. This culinary tradition is not just about the food; it's an immersive cultural experience that brings people together to celebrate flavors, friendship, and tradition. In this article, we'll delve into the essence of Korean BBQ, its history, key dishes, and the unique elements that make it a cherished culinary adventure.
A Brief History:
Korean BBQ traces its roots back centuries to the Korean peninsula, where grilling meat was a common practice dating back to the Three Kingdoms period (57 BC – 668 AD). However, it wasn't until the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) that grilled meats became more prominent in Korean cuisine. During this time, social gatherings often revolved around communal grilling, laying the groundwork for the modern Korean BBQ experience we know today.
Key Ingredients and Preparation:
At the heart of Korean BBQ are high-quality meats, typically beef, pork, or chicken, marinated in a blend of savory, sweet, and spicy flavors. One of the most iconic marinades is bulgogi, thinly sliced beef marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and pepper. Another favorite is galbi, beef or pork ribs marinated in a sauce made from soy sauce, garlic, sugar, and sesame oil.
The grilling process is as integral to the experience as the marinade itself. Traditionally, meats are cooked over a charcoal grill, imparting a smoky flavor that enhances the overall taste. However, modern Korean BBQ restaurants often use gas or electric grills for convenience without compromising on flavor.
Accompaniments:
No Korean BBQ spread is complete without an array of banchan, or side dishes, which complement the grilled meats perfectly. These may include kimchi (fermented vegetables), pickled radishes, bean sprouts, spinach, and more. Banchan adds variety and balance to the meal, offering contrasting flavors and textures that enhance the overall dining experience.
Additionally, diners often wrap grilled meats in lettuce leaves along with rice, garlic, ssamjang (a spicy paste), and other condiments, creating ssam, a flavorful bite-sized parcel bursting with taste.
The Dining Experience:
What truly sets Korean BBQ apart is its communal aspect and interactive dining experience. Meals are typically enjoyed with family and friends gathered around a table with a built-in grill, where everyone participates in cooking and sharing food. This creates a convivial atmosphere, fostering conversation and camaraderie as diners bond over delicious food.
Moreover, Korean BBQ is not just a meal but a sensory journey. The sights, sounds, and smells of the grill evoke a sense of anticipation and excitement, heightening the dining experience and leaving a lasting impression on diners.
Popularity and Global Influence:
In recent years, Korean BBQ has surged in popularity worldwide, thanks to its bold flavors, interactive nature, and Instagram-worthy presentation. Korean BBQ restaurants can now be found in major cities across the globe, attracting both Korean expatriates longing for a taste of home and curious food enthusiasts eager to explore new culinary horizons.
Furthermore, Korean BBQ has influenced contemporary food culture, inspiring fusion dishes, culinary trends, and even dedicated cooking shows and YouTube channels. Its widespread appeal transcends borders, bringing people together through a shared love of food and culture.
Conclusion:
Korean BBQ is more than just a meal; it's a cultural phenomenon that celebrates the art of grilling, the joy of shared dining, and the richness of Korean culinary heritage. From its humble origins to its global popularity, Korean BBQ continues to captivate hearts and palates, inviting diners on a flavorful journey steeped in tradition and community. So, gather your friends, fire up the grill, and embark on your own Korean BBQ adventure—it's an experience you won't soon forget.

Aluminium foil for industrial applications
Aluminium foil is a good choice for industrial applications because of its excellent resistance and affordable price. A variety of aluminium alloys and foils with various qualities can be created by alloying Aluminium with other metals including magnesium, manganese, copper, nickel, silicon, or zinc.
Aluminium foil offers many options and is essential in every sector of the industry, whether it be for packaging or technical applications like the vapor barrier in house construction or the insulation in pipe systems.
Listed below are a few industrial applications for Aluminium foils:
Insulation Capabilities
Aluminium foil is frequently used in building panels because of its heat-reflective and barrier qualities, which improve the insulation capabilities of contemporary building systems. High-performance insulation for ductwork and piping is also provided using Aluminium foil as a skin for heat-insulating and incombustible materials.
Top insulating materials like stone wool, foam insulation panels, and lamellar mats used in the construction industry to insulate buildings, Aluminium foil is utilized as a top layer. The film functions as a vapor barrier to make sure that no water vapor can get through to the insulation, which stops mold growth and moisture damage.
Aluminium foil, which has a reflective surface, is corrosion-resistant, has a long lifespan, and is utilized to make the adhesive tape that is used to hold the laminated material together. The use of Aluminium foil in electrical cables aids in providing long-term insulation against moisture intrusion and attack from naturally occurring corrosive substances located above and below the ground.
Heat Exchangers
In recent years, Aluminium has essentially taken the place of copper as the metal of choice for heat exchangers. The high heat conductivity and significantly reduced weight that Aluminium alloys provide are crucial in every automobile situation. Success for Aluminium has come from extensive development work on alloys, brazing, and other joining techniques as well as the emergence of “clad” materials combining strength with the simplicity of joining.
Packaging Industry
Aluminium foil first gained popularity in the packaging sector at the turn of the 20th century. Aluminium foils up to 10 (1/100 mm) thick may be made as early as 1910 if they were laminated with paper. Aluminium has quickly evolved from being used to package chocolate to being made into beverage cans, coffee capsules, grill trays, and bottle caps thanks to technological advancements.

What the 1910s stained glass windows say about a 19th century Brooklyn tavern
"With its tin ceiling, mosaic tile floor, and handsome mahogany bar, Teddy’s Bar and Grill is like stepping into a late 19th century time machine. This corner tavern on Berry and North Eighth Streets in Williamsburg opened in 1887 as a family-run Irish tavern, according to Teddy’s website. At the time, Brooklyn was a separate city and Williamsburg was a working-class district of Irish and German immigrants, many of whom worked along the waterfront a few blocks away in sugar refineries and other industrial plants. ..."

Poconos Golf: A Good Place to get a Taste of Mountain Golf
Tumblr media
Poconos Golf: A Good Place to get a Taste of Mountain Golf Playing golf in the mountains isn’t our norm, but when the opportunity arose we jumped at it – and we’re glad we did. A good mix of golf is available on the Lehigh Valley Poconos Golf Trail and we experienced three very different types of courses with rounds at Jack Frost National, in Blakeslee; Woodloch Springs, in Hawley; and Shawnee, in Shawnee on the Delaware. We had roughly two-hour drives between Valley Forge and Jack Frost National; another two hours from Jack Frost to Woodloch Springs; and still another two hours from Woodloch to Shawnee. These were all over winding, rolling roads through small towns. They provided pleasant glimpses into the quaint, charming communities but the roads weren’t designed for speed. You had to take your time and enjoy the scenery. Jack Frost National was the most interesting of the three courses, Woodloch the most challenging and Shawnee the most historical. We’ll save Shawnee for last, just because it has the most interesting story to tell. JACK FROST NATIONAL: This layout, measuring 7,256 yards from the tips and spread over 200 acres, is championship caliber but few big events have been played there. “It’s hard to schedule them because we’re a busy place,’’ said director of instruction Ryan Kearn. “We do 218 rounds a day.’’ Most striking about the course are the changes in elevation, most evident between the par-5 ninth hole which plays uphill, and the par-3 eleventh, which is all downhill. No. 14 is the designated signature hole. The area has a ski hill in operation during winter months, but Kearn says there’s no overlap between the sports. The golf and ski facilities have different owners. “In each of the last three years closing day (for skiers) came the day before our opening day,’’ said Kearn. “Our course is interesting, fun, wide open with big greens and fairways and only one water hole.’’ The bar/dining area is covered but open air on the sides, a nice friendly place for socializing before and after play. Architect for Jack Frost National was Terry LaGree. He holds a degree in landscape architecture from the University of Wisconsin but is best known as the chief executive officer at Florida’s Black Diamond Ranch. He completed Jack Frost National in 2007. WOODLOCH SPRINGS: Rocky Roquemore designed this toughie in 1992. It’s only 6,579 yards from the back tees but there’s some demanding shots that can’t be avoided. Nos. 3 and 7 – the front nine par-5s – have three landing areas on the way to the greens that can’t be missed without costing strokes. Roquemore is a busy, internationally-known designer. He’s done courses in Portugal, France, Venezuela, Colombia and the Caribbean as well as across the United States. His best-known courses are probably the Magnolia, Lake Buena Vista and Palm at Florida’s Walt Disney World. His resume also includes Pine Meadow, a popular public course in Illinois. The Woodloch Springs playing experience, while challenging, offers some fine views and deer meander through the layout without showing any fear of the golfers. Woodloch Springs is a semi-private facility. There are two restaurants in the clubhouse of the country club, and The Grille provided outstanding dining during our visit. Outdoor music and a cookout is part of the off-course atmosphere at the Shawnee Inn. SHAWNEE: History abounds here at this Inn and golf resort that has 27 holes. The first 18 was the first design of the legendary architect A.W. Tillinghast, who went on to design such famous layouts as Winged Foot and Bethpage Black, in New York, and Baltusrol, in New Jersey. Tillinghast’s first course opened in 1910. Big tournaments were commonplace there then. Top tour players Fred McLeodand John McDermott, a two-time U.S. Open champion, won Shawnee Open tourneys in 1912 and 1913; Alexa Stirling captured the U.S. Women’s Amateur there in 1919 and Paul Runyan won a title match with Shawnee pro Sam Snead in the 1938 PGA Championship. In 1943 the resort was sold to singer/entertainer Fred Waring. Jackie Gleasonlearned to play golf there and Hale Irwin won an NCAA title at Shawnee before Karl Hope purchased the resort in 1974 and built a ski area with three-time Olympic gold medalist Jean-Claude Killy heading the operation on the slopes. Arnold Palmer met his first wife, Winnie, on the porch of the Shawnee Inn and golfers there over the years included Lucille Ball, Art Carney, Perry Como, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Eddie Fisher, George Gobel and Ed Sullivan. Indiana architect Bill Diddel added a third nine to Tillinghast’s work in 1963 and Tom Doak created a nine-hole practice facility at the resort. A major bridge construction was underway when we visited. That’s significant because the course is divided by what director of marketing Jeromy Wo describes as “international waters.’’ The par-3 second hole on the Red nine plays over the Delaware River to an island that ends when golfers tee off on the No. 7 hole of the Blue nine and the holes come back to the mainland. Twenty-four of the 27 holes at Shawnee are on the island. “The island isn’t part of either Pennsylvania or New Jersey,’’ said Wo. The three nine-hole courses are basically flat, but very much fun. Shawnee isn’t all about golf, however. The 80-room Inn is old, but charming, and there’s vacation cottages and the Delaware Lodge also available for visitors. The resort has two pubs and a brewery. Spa Shawnee and Salon is a place to get pampered and unwind. There’s also river boating and rafting, an indoor Olympic-size swimming pool, a beach along the Delaware River, biking and hiking trails and a playhouse. That’s a lot to digest, but Shawnee is a special place and I’m glad to have experienced it. PHOTO CREDIT: Joy Sarver Read the full article
