I'm looking for a fic that I read on ao3, probably late 2022. Eddie was dead/a ghost for most of it and only Robin could see / talk to him. Steve was grieving as it was a slight au in the sense that the author implied steddie had been together/known each other for way longer but that was mostly glossed over and not a main point. Steve has one of eddies rings and it was vaguely implied that they were married/engaged except it took place directly after the end of season 4. Robin was somehow able to bring ghost eddie back using his ring maybe and it was a completed story. I can't remember exactly but at one point Nancy comes over and ghost Eddie is mad at Robin for letting it happen but the fic wasn't anti-nancy
Request 189! Send me an ask if you recognize this fic!

Me unlocking the Senior Medical position (3000 minute playtime) doesn't actually mean I know how to play Medical
#og post#space station 14#Seniors are suppoused to teach Interns and I was here like “oh you can't revive this guy” but you could#The death threshold is 200 and they had 189 poison I thought they were dead#but if I just cleared up the other damages they would've went under 200 allowing me to put antitoxins in their system (<- basic stuff)#This made me feel legit like shit so I went in again next round to prove myself which the intern said was his best med round#And okay that fixed it. Even if I feel I wasn't any better I showed a few tricks

200 Films of 1952
Film number 189: Les Miserables
Release date: August 14th, 1952
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: drama
Director: Lewis Milestone
Producer: Fred Kohlmar
Actors: Michael Rennie, Debra Paget, Robert Newton, Edmund Gwenn, Cameron Mitchell
Plot Summary: Based on the epic Victor Hugo novel, we see Jean Valjean sent to prison for stealing a loaf of bread. Meeting a kindly bishop who helps him get on his feet after his release, Valjean tries to do good in the world. He breaks his parole, however, and a malevolent French Inspector named Javert becomes obsessed with catching him.
My Rating (out of five stars): ***¾
I’ve never seen the 1935 Hollywood version of this film, which everyone seems to agree is far superior to this. Without that lens to view it through, I thought this 1952 version was pretty good- not great exactly, but quite good. There are a few performances in it that make it worth watching, and Lewis Milestone’s direction was visually striking.
The Good:
Robert Newton as Javert. He was the best part of the film for me. He played the role with a creepy, imposing, desperately obsessive edge, which was exactly what was required.
Javert the character. One of the great characters in literature, his obsessive drive for a machine-like “justice” combined with his traumatic past creates some damn good complexity.
Michael Rennie as Valjean. Rennie will forever be the regal alien in The Day the Earth Stood Still for me, and I love him for it. Here he played Valjean with a lot of sympathy, conveying much through his eyes and expressions.
Edmund Gwenn as the Bishop. Who can ever resist the charms of this man?
Cameron Mitchell as Marius. He played an idealistic revolutionary well.
The direction by Milestone. It was a very interesting film from a visual standpoint. The close-ups were used well, and there were a lot of cool shot compositions. It was also the ideal kind of situation where things were distinctive and creative, but it didn’t pull you out of the movie.
I thought the film did a good job compressing a longer story into a shorter period of time.
The courtroom scenes were particularly visually arresting (pun!)- with a truly nightmarish feel. I’m sure they were influenced by the devastating 1928 French film The Passion of Joan of Arc, because I couldn’t help but think of it.
The political and philosophical messages were conveyed without hitting you over the head with it.
The line by Robert near the end to Javert: “How does success taste after all these years?” Chills!
The Bad:
Rennie was good, but maybe a little too restrained?
Debra Paget as Cosette. Most of the blame can probably go to the script and the Hollywood portrayal of these kinds of roles at the time. She overacted, falling into that “innocent damsel” stereotype.
Debra Paget’s makeup. How she could have been in a mid 19th century convent school with that kind of makeup on her face is laughable.
All the talk of a high school girl being “a desirable woman” ready for marriage. Yes, it was historically accurate to the 19th century, but it was still super gross watching it now.
The hint of incest also grossed me out. I know Valjean was only Cosette’s non-genetic guardian, but she constantly called him father. It’s not technically incest, but... eew.
The use of the intertitles that came on the screen as chapter dividers was inane and totally unnecessary.
I don’t know that this is bad per se, but I find it funny that Hollywood favors using English actors to play European roles, especially if they are larger protagonist roles. I could list examples, but we’d be here forever. It’s just weird to me, because why don’t you ask an English person how French or German they feel...

the main reasons why i ship coai
to me, coai/ shinshi is just the healthier ship, filled with trust, understanding, and mutual interests. it's also the one ship i can see lasting long term in the real world.
they are partners/ solve cases together: Ai likes when he rambles his deductions calling him a "sparrow" (file 713 & 714) and she isn't afraid to ask him for clarification if his explanations get too convoluted. He doesn't really need to help her understand the case, she can figure it out on her own most of the time (file 466-469, 656 [he smiled when he was listening to her deduction]) nor does she give up before she puts any effort into solving the problem first (file 548, 713). She actively contributes to his deductions and he always asks her if she has any ideas (file 287, 525, 664, 729). he can depend on her to stay calm under investigations (file 729, 870) and come up with plans to protect/ help the DB if conan can't be there (file 549, 817). she shares his same investigative curiousity and isn't a bystander, sharing her biochemist background to help shinichi's deductions (file 1098).
they help each other's overcome their weaknesses/ fears: her trust-issues & self-blaming tendencies (file 189-191, 344-346), his impatience & impulsivity (file 429, 475). they put each other at ease when it comes to being paranoid about BO members in public (file 287, 289, 359, 624, 680, 741 [he asked if she wanted to sleep over at the detective agency??], 775, 1006). As for the lies regarding the BO between the two, shinichi said it best in file 341: "[Haibara's] not as tough as she looks." They protect each other because if haibara tells conan about the BO he'll be impulsive/ wanting to attack them immeadiately and if conan tells haibara BO stuff before he resolved it, her trust issues would go on overdrive. Though it should be noted that haibara eavesdropped on some things, so she understands that conan's hiding things from her, by nature that she's the BO "traitor" she's hiding things from shinichi too.
they accept each other imperfections: they tease each other about being adults in a kid's body (file 515-517,724), shiho's age, his lack of tact, his tone-deafnesses, his relationship with ran, her fangirling higo, her aloofness/ sarcasm (file 680), etc. they can get angry with each other and they always apologize, while maintaining a healthy competitive relationship. she loves being able to challenge him intellectually such as telling him to guess her favorite song and the code in file 491, while he's always up for the challenge (file 200) since she knows that shinichi likes puzzles.
he always notices and likes when she smiles (file 275, 292).
shinichi is protective of her and she's protective of him (file 238- 242, 346, 429, 582, 624, 681, 824, 1070) but not in a possesive way & he doesn't need to be told to do so, it's automatic at this point. he promised to always protect her and he kept it.
shinichi always knows when shiho looks like she's going to run away. he always hopes that she doesn't but he always runs after her anyways just to make sure (file 289, 346, 437, 817).
he defends her family when other people make negative comments about them (file 425, 1072).
they share interests other than the BO (soccer, pop culture, animals, music, history, etc.) but they're individuals first.
their relationship has boundaries: haibara respects shinichi's feelings for ran / navigates her jealousy rather gracefully (file 313, 999,1000). conan doesn't probe further about her past with gin when she doesn't want to answer (file 242). they keep each other in check (file 242, 515, 1091). they never force each other to reveal secrets they're not ready to share (file 341) and she can tell when he's suppressing his emotions/ concerns (file 609).
they rescue each other even though they can rescue themselves without each other (file 755,817). she can guess where he'll be/ gives him a spare antidote (file 654) and he always has a plan to get her to safety (file 429, 824). haibara can predict conan's behavior and vice versa (file 289, 430).
side note: it's canon that ran ships coai (file 876), which is hilarious because ai ships shinran (mainly out of denial/ love bc she wants shinichi to be happy/ ran looks like her sister so she wants her to be happy, but this is a whole seperate discussion). also the DB always noticed a vibe between coai, especially ayumi and Mitsuhiko.
for those interested, there's a parallel to shinran: in file 887, haibara ai guessed conan's phone passcode correctly on the first try. whereas it took ran in file 483 multiple tries just to get it correctly. in non-canon movie 16th, conan saw ran's underwear and said 'white' out loud, in canon file 714, he saw haibara's underwear and also said 'white' out loud and he got defensive when she called him a pervert.
#if this were any other series they would be the main couple#there i said it#i only put canon/ manga material here on purpose#there's so many more chapters but these were the first ones that came to mind#shinshi#ai haibara#haibara ai#kudo shinichi#coai#shinichi kudo#conan edogawa#shiho miyano

Canon Heights(???) & Carmen Sandiego
Hi all 👋
I've recovered from the month and a half I spent on the Carmen Sandiego timeline and am back to my regularly scheduled obsessing
Which has expanded to the characters and how tall they are because seriously how tall are they oml????
Now, I assume plenty of us have seen this image before:
You can find it on the Official Carmen Sandiego Facebook back from Oct 2019 (not sure about the Instagram or Twitter I'm too lazy to check)
It's widely been used as the canon basis for the character's heights, though I found myself unsure of its reliability
There have been a multitude of posts using the same "Your [Insert Topic Here] Your Carmen Sandiego Character" format, none of which seem to be canon to the show
The Zodiac and Birth Month ones actively contradict each other after all
And I can hear you saying "this really doesn't matter, this is ridiculous online person I don't know"
And you would be correct but I'm nothing if not a nerd so guess what I stumbled upon during my timeline rewatch
Boom
Directly from the show, Graham's mugshot. This is a very frustrating image to be honest because if you look closely between the 5 and 6 foot mark there are 10 lines as opposed to the 12 there should be corresponding to each inch
But oh! There's another image with his mug shot!
This one has no numbers.
So I did what any sane person would do and resorted to math
First I took Chief's image and deleted her from existence, leaving only Graham
Then I undistorted the photo so that it properly lined up with the flat version Bellum displayed so I would know where the foot markers would line up
These were 14 notches apart. Equally unhelpful. So I accepted my fate and pulled out the pixel measurements. Between the 5 foot and 6 foot line was 405 pixels
Between the 5 foot mark and Graham's head was 358 pixels
Using this very simple equation
[A (px) / B (px)] * B (in) = A (in)
We can find out how tall Graham is
358/405 * 12 = 10.61
Round that up to 11 inches and add the 60 inches that makes up 5ft we get a resounding height of 5'11" (or 179 cm)
(if you're confused on why the math works, we know that 405 pixels = 12 inches, we're looking to find what 358 pixels out of that 405 is which is why we multiply that fraction by 12. 405/405 times 12 would equal 12, same idea applies to 358/405. I hope this makes sense.)
For the rest of the characters we can use this lovely height chart
You can find this chart on the Official Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter (I checked). They're separated into individual photos, I just lined them all up into one big one here, it has been unaltered otherwise.
Using the same formula the character's heights are as such (rounded up or down accordingly by the decimals): Coach Brunt: 6'10" (208 cm) Countess Cleo: 6'6" (197 cm) Boris: 6'6" (198 cm) Male A.C.M.E. Agent: 6'4" (194 cm) Cookie Booker: 6'4" (193 cm) Chief: 6'4" (192 cm) Shadowsan: 6'4" (192 cm) Le Chevre: 6'3" (190 cm) Devineaux: 6'3" (190 cm) Prof. Maelstrom: 6'2" (187 cm) Zack: 6'1" (186 cm) Agent Zari: 6'0" (182 cm) Mime Bomb: 5'11" (180 cm) Crackle: 5'11" (179 cm) Carmen: 5'10" (177 cm) Tigress: 5'10" (177 cm) Ivy: 5'10" (177 cm) El Topo: 5'6" (168 cm) Vlad: 5'7" (171 cm) Julia: 5'8" (172 cm) Teenage Carmen: 5'5" (166 cm) Dr. Bellum: 5'3" (159 cm) Player: 5'4" (162 cm) Child Carmen: 3'10" (117 cm) Kid Carmen: 2'6" (77 cm)
What does this mean? Either the cast of Carmen Sandiego is ridiculously tall or this is all vaguely nonsense
Regardless of my dubious findings I thought it was fun and might as well post what I had
The chart itself does have some merit though, using Carmen's 5'7" that is listed in the Facebook post as a basis you get these heights instead:
Coach Brunt: 6'7" (200 cm) Countess Cleo: 6'2" (189 cm) Boris: 6'3" (190 cm) Male A.C.M.E. Agent: 6'1" (186 cm) Cookie Booker: 6'1" (186 cm) Chief: 6'0" (184 cm) Shadowsan: 6'0" (184 cm) Le Chevre: 6'0" (182 cm) Devineaux: 6'0" (182 cm) Prof: Maelstrom: 5'11" (180 cm) Zack: 5'10" (178 cm) Agent Zari: 5'9" (175 cm) Mime Bomb: 5'8" (173 cm) Crackle: 5'8" (172 cm) Carmen: 5'7" (170 cm) Tigress: 5'7" (171 cm) Ivy: 5'7" (170 cm) El Topo: 5'3" (161 cm) Vlad: 5'5" (164 cm) Julia: 5'5" (165 cm) Teen Carmen: 5'3" (159 cm) Dr. Bellum: 5'0" (153 cm) Player: 5'1" (156 cm) Child Carmen: 3'8" (113 cm) Kid Carmen: 2'5" (74 cm)
This one feels slightly less outlandish, but really Player is still stuck at 5'1" as a 16 year old so how realistic can it be
I hope someone enjoyed my ramblings, however inconclusive they may have been 🙌

Herodotus on Babylon
The description of Babylon and Babylonian customs in Histories by the Greek historian Herodotus (l. c. 484-425/413 BCE) has long been challenged for accuracy and been found wanting, leading some scholars to dismiss the work entirely as more fiction than fact. This rejection of the Histories, however, derives from applying modern-day historical standards to an ancient historian and, ultimately, is unfair and unprofitable.
Herodotus was a great storyteller who, in keeping with the practice of his time, was as interested in relating a compelling tale as sticking to factual details. It seems increasingly clear, based on archaeological evidence and ancient cuneiform records, that the Babylon of Herodotus’ Histories differs from the actual ancient city of his time, but this is not to say his description is wholly inaccurate nor does it seem reasonable, based on the Babylon passages primarily, to dismiss the whole of his work.
Herodotus & Ancient History
Every ancient historian can be accused of some form of exaggeration or inaccuracy, but few seem to receive the kind of harsh criticism regularly aimed at Herodotus. Diodorus Siculus (l. 90-30 BCE), for example, gives a lengthy description of the life of Queen Semiramis which is understood as almost wholly myth, but the bulk of his work is still accepted as more or less accurate. Statements which cannot be supported by other texts or archaeological evidence certainly should be challenged but it is a mistake to read the works of ancient historians in the light of modern-day historical standards.
A story about the past, to an ancient audience, revolved around a truth, not necessarily the truth. The Egyptian scribes of the Middle Kingdom (2040-1782 BCE) who wrote of the First Intermediate Period (2181-2040 BCE) as a dark time of chaos were purposefully exaggerating the problems of the past to highlight the stability of their present. Archaeological evidence has clearly shown the First Intermediate Period was not the tumultuous era the ancient scribes present but their narratives do correspond to a time of instability, change, and uncertainty.
This same paradigm is seen in Mesopotamian Naru Literature in which some historical figure such as Sargon of Akkad (r. 2334-2279 BCE) or Naram-Sin (r. 2261-2224 BCE) is featured in what amounts to a fictional tale. The facts may not correspond to what modern-day scholars understand as history but, to an ancient audience, would have communicated some important cultural or religious truth.
In this same way, Herodotus relates the grandeur of Babylon and the strange or disturbing (to him) customs of the people. It does not seem that Herodotus ever visited Babylon himself and was relying on second-hand information from which, as a storyteller, he wove one of the most compelling narratives of the city extant. This description does not correspond to the ruins excavated in the modern age or ancient Mesopotamian records but does provide insight into how a Greek writer of the 5th century BCE viewed the culture of the Near East.
His Babylonian narrative is criticized at a number of points in the modern day, including I:178 (the description of the city) and I:189-I:191 on the fall of Babylon to Cyrus II (the Great, r. c. 550-530 BCE), but those who find fault with Herodotus’ work overall usually focus on I:192-I:200 and, especially, I:199 in which he discusses “sacred prostitution”. There is no evidence of any such practice as he describes it in the Near East, much less at Babylon, and so this passage has encouraged some modern scholars to reject the entirety of the work. As scholars W.F.M. Henkelman et. al. point out, however:
What Herodotus’ work is not, is a scholarly description of the twenty-first century kind, which can be simply read as history. It is, instead, a literary masterpiece, which betrays far more of the Greek image of matters than about such matters themselves. (465)
It seems reasonable to consider this approach to Herodotus’ work and appreciate it for what it has to offer rather than reject it completely on the basis of a few chapters or, in some cases, simply on I:199.

Hii🙈🙈 do you perhaps have any bart and wally comic recs? I want to read more of them both but I can't find any reading orders or a jumping off point besides barts debut. Thank yew in advance💝
Here is a reading guide, I am doing this mostly by memory and looking at my own reading list/notes on their relationship, so I know I am not hitting every single comic they appear in together, but it's still pretty comprehensive imo. They start off VERY rocky, but once Bart becomes Kid Flash things between them are written less grating as they come to an understanding of each other and respect each other more.
Note: this is all pre-Flashpoint and these issues focus on their interactions/feelings between each other, a lot of it pretty caustic. Some issues might have only one panel, others many pages.
