Tequila Buying Guide: Everything You Need to Know
Tequila is one of the most popular spirits in the world, and it’s not hard to see why. With its unique flavour profile and versatility, tequila can be enjoyed in various ways. However, buying the right tequila can be daunting, especially if you’re new to the spirit. This blog post will provide a comprehensive tequila-buying guide covering everything you need to know about this beloved spirit.
What is Tequila?
Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the blue agave plant, primarily grown in the Tequila region of Mexico. Making tequila involves cooking the agave plant and then fermenting and distilling the juice. Tequila is typically aged in oak barrels for anywhere from a few weeks to several years, depending on the type of tequila.
History of Tequila
The history of tequila dates back to the 16th century when the Spanish introduced distillation to Mexico. The indigenous people of Mexico had been fermenting the agave plant for centuries, but it wasn’t until the Spanish arrived that tequila was born. The first recorded instance of tequila being produced dates back to 1600, and since then, tequila has become an integral part of Mexican culture and tradition.
Tequila vs. Mezcal
One of the most common misconceptions about tequila is that it’s the same as mezcal. While both spirits are made from the agave plant, the two have several key differences. Mezcal can be made from any agave plant, while tequila must be made from the blue agave plant. Mezcal is also typically smokier and more complex than tequila, with a more straightforward flavour profile.
Types of Tequila
There are several different types of tequila, each with its unique characteristics. These include:
Blanco: Also known as silver tequila, this type is unaged and has a fresh, clean flavour.
Reposado: Aged for anywhere from two months to a year, reposado tequila has a more complex flavour profile than blanco tequila.
Añejo: Aged for at least one year, añejo tequila has a smooth, rich flavour and is often sipped like a fine whiskey.
Extra Añejo: Aged for at least three years, extra añejo tequila is the most expensive and rarest type. It has a deep, complex flavour and is typically sipped like a fine cognac.

Dah-don-dah-dah-dah-don-don-don...
Tequila. A liquor made from agave that has developed a reputation for creating mayhem. No wonder it's found its way into a few Tiki drink recipes. I'm not much on the stuff myself, but here are a few cocktails you might enjoy. First,a quick infographic about the difference between mezcal and proper tequila:
(note that I used 1800 Reposado tequila for the following mixes)
Mix #125 Cannonball
2oz mezcal 3/4oz lime juice 3/4oz pineapple juice 1/4oz apricot liqueur 3 dashes Angostura bitters
Shake with ice and strain into mug with fresh ice.
I found this Beau Du Bois creation on another Tumblr blog. It's very tequila forward and a touch bitter. I wound up adding some Demerara syrup to finish it,but if you like tequila and/or bitter, give it a try.
Mix #126 Mojave
1.5oz Asombroso tequila 1.5oz sweet n' sour mix 1/2oz blue curacao 1tsp lime juice splash of orange juice
Shake with ice and pour into glass with rim half sugared/half salted. Fill straw with tequila.
Created by Rory "Wildsville Man" Snyder to showcase Asombroso tequila, this is smooth and orange-ish,with a bit of tart. I didn't sugar/salt my rim, because that's to boujee for me,plus that would obviously change the flavor and I wanted to taste just the drink. A nice drink that lets you taste the tequila.
Mix #127 Xiuhtecuhtli*
2oz tequila 3/4oz blue curacao 3/4oz orgeat 1/2oz lime juice 2oz coconut water
Flash blend with 6oz ice, then strain into Zombie glass filled with fresh crushed ice.
*pronounced 'Shoe the COOT lih'
Created by Ken of House of Tabu, this appeared in issue #13 of Exotica Moderne. Very tequila forward, but smooth with a touch of orange and a creamy note. This would be a good drink for introducing someone to tequila.
Mix #128 Lava Rum Demon
1oz white rum 1oz mezcal 1oz Jagermeister 1oz passionfruit syrup 1oz grapefruit juice 1oz lemon juice
Shake with ice and pour into mug.
From the drink card of the official mug of the Til-Two Club comes a drink created to cause trouble. Now,just looking at the list of ingredients, you'd think that combining rum, tequila, and Jager would result in a hot mess. But it's actually a nice drink. Fruity with a licorice aftertaste,it goes down easy. But it's strong,so be careful how many of these you have,as it will give you a hangover.
Go ahead and experience some agave. Just remember what Tuvok said:

Casa Noble Reposado
A lot of people do not realize, as I did not, that tequila, good tequila, is made to be sipped. The reason that crap tequila (Jose Cue... cough, cough) is shot with salt and lime is because it is just that: crap tequila. The salt and lime are not there to enhance the flavor of the agave distilled spirits. It is there to take the gag out of the low quality tequila so that you can actually get it down.
Good tequilas are made to be sipped; to be enjoyed while spending time reminiscing with old friends around a fire pit. These tequilas do not come “dressed” (salt and lime). They are served at room temperature and neat (without ice). Why? Because you don’t need the lime or salt to hide the flavor of good tequila.
A short lesson on types of tequila. There are five different types of tequila. These are determined by aging: blanco, reposado, añejo, extra añejo, and cristalino.
Blanco: Sometimes called Plata or Silver. This goes straight from the still, to a stainless-steel collector, to the bottle and then to a store for you to purchase. There is no aging to mellow this tequila and therefore you get more of a bright, colorful agave flavor.
Reposado: Rested tequila. It has been aged in oak barrels, but no more than 364 days. This gives it the nice toasty, warm, oaky flavors that you might associate with a good whiskey. A reposado is the tequila of choice for margaritas on my patio.
Añejo: This is the same as Reposado, but it has been aged for more than 364 days. For a tequila to be considered añejo, it has been aged from one year (to the day) up to 3 years. This extra aging gives the tequila an even smoother, deeper flavor than a reposado. This is not a tequila you would likely mix in a cocktail, because 1. You cannot enjoy the smoothness of the tequila, and 2. The price tag typically associated with a good añejo does not lend itself to be poured into a gallon jug of your fave margarita mix to haul to your next neighborhood block party.
Extra Añejo: This is a fairly new designation for tequila that has been aged longer than 3 years. This is the tequila that will have the most complex flavors.
Cristalino: This is a new classification that’s all the rage currently. Aged tequila is filtered through charcoal to remove tannins. Supposedly, it softens the mouthfeel. What it does do is remove the color without doubt. This is on my bucket list to try.
I promised myself when I started this blog that I would adhere to two rules: 1. That I would only recommend liquors that I had actually tried and liked, and 2. That I would only recommend liquors that we all could afford.
This bottle of tequila checks both of those boxes.
Casa Noble Reposado
This bottle is around $40 for a 750ml. Traveling from Mexico and across the border in the back of a truck is not without its dangers. This bottle has the scars to prove it as it is missing the medallion that typically adorns these bottles.
The bottle itself is a nice, corked bottle, not screw top. It is signed by the Maestro Tequilero or Master Tequila Distiller, Jose “Pepe” Hermosillo. We use one of these bottles for a decanter in our home. I mean, I paid for the bottle not just the contents, right?
But inside the bottle is where the real magic begins. The color is a light golden honey color. Just slightly lighter than say Tequila Reserva 1800. This tequila goes into the French White Oak barrel as a plata and emerges 364 days later as a beautiful reposado full of all the oak infused goodness that a tequila like this deserves.
The nose hits nicely as it is a little fruity, like a nice wine. The first thing to hit the palate is the slight smokiness. It is then followed by hints of caramel and brown sugar. As it finishes, the notes of peppery spiciness and fruit bathe the tongue.
When I was in Mexico a couple of years ago, a guy that was trying to sell me tequila said, “You judge it by the scorpion stings (the burning sensations experienced in the throat when drinking straight tequila). Good tequila is smooth without a lot of stings.” I would say this has maybe one and half stings. It is not Clase Azul Reposado (a review for another day), but it is also not $200 a bottle like Clase Azul.
If you are looking for a nice sipping tequila to serve to friends to let them know that you care about them and cherish their friendship, then this tequila will not disappoint. This gets an overall Paranormal-Spirits Rating of 3.5 Ghosts based on a 1 to 5 rating system.

1800 Reposado Tequila
Hmm, not bad, a nice peppery taste with the sweetness, a slight herbal taste to it, nice and strong with a bite that teases but doesn't burn, I'll give it a good 4/5 and I'd pay $25-30 for a 750 ml bottle. It would go GREAT in cocktails, but I could appreciate it on it's own as well

TR Thoughts - Meeting Bonten Sanzu
• - • - • - • - • - • - • - • - • - • - • - • - •
Pairings: Sanzu X AFAB Reader
Genre: Smut.
A/N: not proof read. Honestly this is just word vomit. I was feeling particularly horny for Sanzu.
Warnings: Public Sex, mentions of alcohol Tbh probably missed something.
• - • - • - • - • - • - • - • - • - • - • - • - •
Going to the club with your friends is never your definition of a good time.
So there you sit at the bar, not wanting to get drunk you order everything without alcohol. Sugar is what will fuel you, till your friends decide to call it a night.
You keep an eye on your friends at all times. Your RBF doing a great job of keeping most of the creeps away. Not bothering with small talk from anyone that approaches you, because honestly it's been too long since the last time you had a hook up and you weren't looking for one.
A man appeared on your peripheral view, bright pastel pink hair catching your eye, as he sits next to you. It's hard to not look, he is exceptionally gorgeous. Breath taking piercing icy blue eyes, framed with beautiful long blond lashes. His nose perfectly chiseled, lips look so soft and plush with a pretty pink flush all around. Two diamond shape scars adorn the corner of his mouth, and you could just kiss them.
Your eyes wondered down to his chin and jaw line, making you bite your bottom lip in the process. The little movement of him raising chin, brought you back to reality, as you finally noticed that he was watching you, studying his features. He raised a glass to you, tipping his head back before taking a sip of the dark liquid inside. You give a shy smile before turning back to your drink, taking large sips to cool you down from the heat of embarrassment.
He approaches you with a panty dropping smile "Hello lovely, You seem to be a pretty little fish out of water. Not your scene?" He asks, mock concern laced in his voice.
You gulp the liquid in your mouth, almost believing this is nothing but a dream. You smile and nod "Yeah, not my thing. But my friends wanted to check the place out and I am supposed to be the responsible one tonight." You inform matter of fact.
He starts to introduce himself, but you see your friends approaching, prompting you to order water bottles for each of them. "Sanzu? Pretty name, I'm -" your friends cutting you off mid introduction.
"Y/N! Come dance with us!" They say tugging you. Before they can drag you away, you hand them water bottles. "Oh, who are you?" Asks Sue.
"Better be nice to her or she'll stab you" comments Mai. Making Sanzu raise a brow at you
You shake your head and smile at him. "You guys go ahead and I'll come look for you, yeah? I just have to pay the tab." They all wave, heading back to the dance floor.
Before you can pull my plastic card out of your clutch, Sanzu is already paying for your tab. "Oh wait, no. I need two more drinks" you tell the bartender, who just looks between Sanzu and you, waiting for him to give him the green light, which he does.
"Two doubles, 1800 reposado." Bartender places the shot glasses in front of us, and you down both before Sanzu can even reach for one.
Gasping you apologize "sorry, I needed that. Okay let's go dance." He allows you to take his hand and drag him were all you friends are before loosing yourselves in the blairing music.
Soon enough the liquid courage takes over and you start to grind on him, pressing harder feeling the growing bulge in his pants. His hands at your hips pulling you into him, a shameless moan escaping you, drowned by the music.
He whispers in your ear "come with me." silently you let your friends know you'll be going with Sanzu before you exit the club. The chilly night hair, biting at your hot sensitive skin.
Finding his car, he pulls you in with him to the back seat. The smell of the leather seats mingles with clinging odor of weed and cigarette smoke.
He pulls you on to his lap, straddling him. Bunching up the bottom of your black dress just above your hips. One of his hands wraps around your hair, bringing you in for a kiss as he tightens his grip making you hiss against his lips, making out with a hunger that feeds the fire burning in your belly.
His fingers play with the folds of your pussy pushing your panties to the side. "So warm and wet sweetheart, what a little whore." Nodding like and idiot at his words because in this moment all you want is his dick inside your needy hole.
You get to furiously work on setting his throbbing dick free from the confine of his pants and briefs.
His cock is so long and pretty just like the rest of him, hand can't grasp around it completely, giving a few pumps before pearly beads of pre start leaking out of the slit adorning the pretty pink head. Draging the pad of your thumb down the slit, smearing his pre all over the soft head of his cock. You watch his face as he grits his teeth, eyes squeezing shut and he takes in a harp breath of air. His fingers stop moving while he regains his composure.
With one free hand you dig around your clutch for a condom, quicky ripping the foil packet and rolling it on him. He grins before taking your lips with his, helping you lift your hips as you line him up with your entrance.
You attempt to take him in slowly but the impatient fuck that he is, he slams his hips up into you.
"Ahh, fuck. Saaanzu!" You scream. His lips are at your neck making their way over to your ear, staying completely still inside you.
"Call me Haru while I'm inside you baby. Fuck, you're so warm. So fucking tight." He tells me while he bites at the lobe of my ear.
Nodding in response, "S'too much Haru" letting his name come out in a breathy moan as his lips continue to assault your neck.
He rest his hands at your hips allowing you to move when ready. And you do, sooner than anticipated, but the stretch of his cock is killing you, feels so good you just need more.
Slowly you work yourself on his cock, while he takes his time to mark you up. He pulled down the straps of the dress releasing your soft breasts to be abused by his teeth. The sting of his bites hurt so good, allowing for pornographic moans to leave your mouth. Sucking hard all around your chest painting your breast all sorts of pink and purple.
You bounce on his cock, holding him at the shoulders to steady yourself while you work myself to past the edge of pleasure. The squelching sound of wet skin against skin fills the car along with strung up pleas of his name.
Finally cumming around him, you watch him throw his head back "fuck so good" leaving his pretty scared lips. Grabbing him by the hair and pull him in for a kiss never slowing down, even as you feel like slumping over, shaken by the strength of your orgasms.
He lifts you off of him, and helps turn you around. Pushing you down on the front console of the car, bending over you, he shoves himself inside again.
"Fuck s'good, dick s'good" leaving your lips. He starts pounding into you at inhuman speed, but his cock is hitting all the right spots as his balls slap against your clit, pushing you over the edge in no time.
Black spots clouding your vision, and you feel his cock thicken before his seed fills the condom, feeling the warmth of his realeae before he pulls out.
"Best fuck, ever" he hufs gasping for hair, before slapping your ass, making you yelp. He takes the condom tying it up and dropping it on the floor of the car. "Need a ride home?" He asks.
You check my phone and nod, seeing that your friends left only minutes after you exited the club.
He tucks himself back in his pants before helping you shimmy your dress back down your thighs. "There, all ready?"
"Yeah, all ready." You answer.
He gets out of the car first, opening the front passenger side door for you. You give him your address as he climbs on the driver's seat.
On the drive to your shared apartment, you ask him about his name and he proceeds to explain, Sanzu being a nickname, Haru being his given name. He ask about you and reading for being in Tokyo. Vague as can be you explain it's about your school.
Before climbing out the car, he reaches for his wallet and you start obviously fuming. Making him raise his hands in defense "it's not what you thing. It's just my business love. No need to get angry"
Glare at him, you take his card. Bonten: Executive VP. Cell: xxx-xxxx
You give him a chaste kiss on the cheek and thank him for the ride before dashing straight into my apartment building, smiling down at the business card like an idiot.

if we’re going to talk cocktails, I want to start with one that’s probably the most basic, but also the most shamelessly bastardized. not the daiquiri, surprisingly, although I could write a book on my issues with that one in particular. today I’m going to chat with you all about margaritas, and how to Level Up your marg game
Most bars with margaritas on the menu batch them with bottom shelf tequila and triple sec and load them up with sugar to hide the sheer nastiness. It’s the same tactic that shitty breweries use when they load their IPAs up with an obscene amount of hops, and that their great grandfathers used brewing old tom gin. but a margarita, ideally, shouldn’t work to camouflage the taste of tequila, rather, highlight its strengths as a spirit, and achieve a gorgeous balance of sweet, salty, savory, and acidic.
so I’m going to walk you through how to do that
reposado (or, somewhat aged) tequila will add a lot more depth to any drink it’s used in. 1800 is a good mid-range starter bottle – enough integrity to give you a sense of how it’s tastier than your blanco varieties, but not so expensive that you feel like you’ve emptied your pockets over something disappointing. If you’re most comfortable with blanco, look for a bottle that’s 100% agave. anything else is going to be cut with a varied amount of Unknown Sweeteners
I like to do a split base with tequila and mezcal. to the vegans out there, the worm stuff is bullshit. tequila is strictly harvested from blue agave, and mezcal can be distilled from 50+ agave varieties, and it has a different distillation process – it’s cooked underground and renders a smokier flavor. the extent to which is dependent on the distiller. I’m using Vida here, which is pretty easy to find, and basically liquid smoke for your drinks.
background info aside, I give you a recipe:
- 1 ounce reposado tequila
- 1 ounce vida mezcal
- 1/2 ounce cointreau
- 1/2 ounce agave syrup
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- 1 tsp lime zest
shake that bitch up and strain it. serve it with a salt rimmed glass and a lime wedge (if you’re feeling ostentatious)
