Well I finished Dr Stone and the last episode was really great! I think it’s nice that we get that sort of sentimental sendoff from Byakuya in the past meaning that Senku in the present can really truly convey to the villagers just how incredible science is. And the fact that it’s all like gaming and comics and music and shit, really drives home that Otaku Hero’s Journey thing. This anime’s fucking sick. This is, after all, an over the top and upbeat shounen show, so I just think it’s great to end this season off on that like “fuck yeah, humanity and science” note, you know keep things positive while we really do get ready for war. Also means Byakuya can continue being one of the best dads in anime, which is really impressive for someone who’s been dead for like the entire show. Very happy with this ending.

And so, that’s Dr Stone. And my score? 9/10. Yeah, not a fuckin common one at all, but this show really earns that high praise. This show, from start to finish, was an utter delight, and I mean it’s already absolutely joyous to have a 2 cour show that doesn’t kinda fall off during its second cour, but just how good it is is amazing. It’s just always working towards long term goals, so the fact that there’s always something on the horizon means the show literally always feels like it’s going somewhere, and the payoffs are always great, but then all of the processes feed into other processes so we can always be getting like instant gratification which means the show is a completely euphoric experience the entire time, and seeing something they built in episode X be used again in episode Y (such as Kohaku’s shields multiple uses) is just, it feels so lovingly crafted all the time. And as I’ve drilled home time and time again, there’s how fucking refreshing Senku’s character is, seeing a male genius character in fiction that’s not another Rick Sanchez, that’s just a genuinely nice dude who wants to save people, who gets upset over his dead dad, who celebrates Christmas, who gets happy to have a birthday present, it’s great having a genius character that you can watch without pitying or being disgusted by, and like yeah 4 of those things I just mentioned as being traits of his he does kinda hide, but I feel like that comes across as a genuine teenager type of hiding rather than like, I guess not that. And the fact that he can’t just do anything, he makes mistakes, he miscalculates, underestimates, and he has to genuinely rely on the people around him, it’s just fucking great. Honestly the only thing I could really hold against this show is that the comedy’s just kinda dumb shounen shit I don’t care about, and the visuals drop off pretty badly fairly early on and don’t really recover, but I wouldn’t say those are anything that would detract from my final score, also visuals might be touched up for BD anyway. All in all, Dr Stone’s just a really great example of what a 9/10 is for me, and that’s a fucking great time.
