60 Years of the Tokaido Shinkansen!

On 1 October 1964, a railway line like no other opened. Connecting Tôkyô and Ôsaka, paralleling an existing main line, the Tôkaidô New Trunk Line had minimal curves, lots of bridges, zero level crossings. Striking white and blue electric multiple units, with noses shaped like bullets some would say, started zooming between the two cities as at the unheard-of speed of 210 km/h.
This was the start of the Shinkansen, inaugurating the age of high-speed rail.

The trains, with noses actually inspired by the aircraft of the time, originally didn't have a name, they were just "Shinkansen trains", as they couldn't mingle with other types anyway due to the difference in gauge between the Shinkansen (standard gauge, 1435 mm between rails) and the rest of the network (3'6" gauge, or 1067 mm between rails). The class would officially become the "0 Series" when new trains appeared in the 1980s, first the very similar 200 Series for the second new line, the Tôhoku Shinkansen, then the jet-age 100 Series. Yes, the 200 came first, as it was decided that trains heading North-East from Tôkyô would be given even first numbers, and trains heading West would have odd first numbers (0 is even, but never mind).

Hence the next new type to appear on the Tôkaidô Shinkansen was the 300 Series (second from left), designed by the privatised JR Tôkai to overcome some shortcomings of the line. Indeed, the curves on the Tôkaidô were still too pronounced to allow speeds to be increased, while all other new lines had been built ready for 300 km/h operations. But a revolution in train design allowed speeds to be raised from 220 km/h in the 80s to 285 km/h today, with lightweight construction (on the 300), active suspension (introduced on the 700 Series, left) and slight tilting (standard on the current N700 types).

Examples of five generations of train used on the Tôkaidô Shinkansen are preserved at JR Tôkai's museum, the SCMaglev & Railway Park, in Nagoya, with the N700 prototype lead car outdoors. It's striking to see how far high-speed train technology has come in Japan in 60 years. The network itself covers the country almost end-to-end, with a nearly continuous line from Kyûshû to Hokkaidô along the Pacific coast (no through trains at Tôkyô), and four branch lines inland and to the North coast, one of which recently got extended.

An introduction to rolling stock VR operates for other owners, part 2: TRO X34
And now for something completely different: a tram! In addition to the Sm5 units we operate for JKOY, we also operate all the trams of the Tampere tramway.
The Tampere tram system is Finland's newest tram system, opened in 2021, with one extension opened in 2023, and another due to open in 2025. As rolling stock, the city-owned Tampereen Raitiotie Oy opted for a developed version of the Finnish-built Škoda Transtech X34 tram, which had previously been built for the Helsinki tram system.

TRO04 with the Kaleva church in the background. My photo.
Although the units built for Tampere share the same type designation as the Helsinki trams, X34, the Tampere units are longer, wider and have different track gauge (the Tampere system is currently the only standard-gauge, aka 1435 mm gauge, rail network in Finland). The exterior design is also different, with a brick-red styling from the local designers IDIS.
The Tampere X34's have a capacity for 264 passengers per unit and a service top speed of 70 km/h (actual top speed is 80 km/h). Twenty trams have been delivered to date, with six more due for delivery for the next extension in 2025, and TRO has an option for 40 additional units for future extensions of the system.

Interior of TRO15. My photo.
VR was awarded the contract to operate all TRO trams for the first ten-year period from 2021 onwards in 2019. Hopefully, with the good work we do, we'll get the next ten-year contract too!

The recently held Vilnius GreenTech Forum, one of the largest events in the Baltics in the energy, transport, and green economy sectors, brought together policymakers, business leaders, and industry professionals. Among the participants was Marius Narmontas, Chief Operating Officer and Vice-Chairperson of the Management Board at RB Rail AS. Representing Rail Baltica, Narmontas highlighted the project's commitment to sustainability and its transformative potential in reshaping the region’s transport and energy systems.
A Catalyst for Green Innovation
Rail Baltica’s vision aligns with the objectives of the GreenTech Forum: fostering sustainable, secure, and efficient transport systems while driving the energy transition. Rail Baltica is positioned to lead the shift toward greener transport solutions across the Baltic region.
The project exemplifies this shift by promoting a sustainable mode of transport that reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In line with the EU's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and cutting transport emissions by 80% by 2040, Rail Baltica offers a renewable-powered alternative for passenger and freight transport. By transitioning from road-based systems to electrified rail, the project will contribute significantly to achieving these ambitious targets.
Sustainable Infrastructure Development
Narmontas emphasized Rail Baltica's multi-faceted approach to sustainability. This includes engaging stakeholders to ensure the project not only meets environmental targets but also enhances regional mobility, supports business growth, and facilitates cultural exchange. Rail Baltica is also dedicated to reducing the region's reliance on fossil fuels, thus increasing energy independence – a mission critical for the Baltics in today’s geopolitical climate.
To solidify its commitment, Rail Baltica has adopted a Declaration of Sustainability Principles. These principles guide policies and practices throughout the project's lifecycle, ensuring that sustainability remains a core focus from planning to operation.
Smart Planning for a Greener Future
Rail Baltica's approach to planning and construction is grounded in smart, environmentally conscious practices. This includes prioritizing the use of local materials transported via rail, reusing excavated soil, and minimizing ecological impact by restricting temporary structures in forested areas. Station designs incorporate energy-efficient heating systems, reinforcing the project's dedication to low-carbon infrastructure.
Procurement processes further underscore sustainability by emphasizing reduced emissions, recycled materials, and durable components. Rail Baltica also mandates the use of machinery with improved engine categories and recycled construction materials, including asphalt and reinforcements.
A Collaborative Effort for a Greener Tomorrow
As a platform for meaningful dialogue among political, business, and public leaders, the GreenTech Forum underscored the importance of collaboration in advancing sustainability. Rail Baltica’s participation exemplified how innovative infrastructure projects can drive both environmental and economic progress.
By laying the groundwork for smart rail technologies and integrating green practices, Rail Baltica not only leads the way in sustainable transportation but also provides a model for the future of infrastructure development in Europe.
About Rail Baltica
Rail Baltica is one of Europe's largest high-speed infrastructure projects, aiming to establish a modern and sustainable rail link that connects the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania with the European rail network. It is also a part of the trans-European transport corridor.
Rail Baltica will be a fully electrified, double-track railway with a standard gauge of 1435 mm and will be equipped with ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) and designed to meet European standards. With a design speed of 249 km/h, Rail Baltica will significantly reduce travel times between the Baltic States and major European cities. It will serve as a modern infrastructure for passenger, freight, and military mobility, promoting accessibility and facilitating business, tourism, and cultural exchange. Additionally, the project will enhance the Baltic region's position as a vital transit hub, fostering stronger trade connections and promoting regional cooperation.
About RB Rail AS
RB Rail AS is a multinational joint venture of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania established to lead and coordinate the implementation of the Rail Baltica Global Project, the first infrastructure development project of this scale in the Baltic region. A totally different kind of calculator
My latest purchase for The Collection, a Calculated Industries ConversionCalc Plus, was mainly to further diversify my collection, as I now want to get calculators from as many distinct manufacturers as possible. As the name suggests, it's a calculator that is entirely dedicated to the task of converting between different measurements.
I picked the conversion calculator because it is by far the least specialised of all of CI's calculators and just about the only one I could imagine being actually useful to me.
After getting it, it's one of my favourite calculators ever and it goes on my desk rather than on the drawers with most of the calculator collection. I use it whenever I have unit conversions to do because it's so much more convenient than opening a new tab and typing conversions into Google, especially because Google converts to feet with a decimal point by default, instead of feet and inches:
Look Google! It's how people expect feet measurements to be formatted!
Most unit conversions are two button presses away because there's no need to type out their names or dig through menus, everything's at the base or shifted layers of the keypad. I would never use my other calculators for this purpose because they don't prioritise it enough to be faster than Google. It's faster to type "1435 mm to ft" into Google than find the conversions menu in my fx-9750Gii and use submenus every time to slowly type out "[mm] -> [ft]":
After all that effort, it still won't present it in feet and inches!
It of course works as a normal calculator, but has some odd limitations, such as lacking cubes and cube roots. Squares and square roots are elegantly integrated into the unit conversion system. Squaring a metre value will turn it into square metres, and taking the square root of an area will show you the side length of a square with that area, automatically changing from square measurements to linear ones. But none of this can happen with the cubic measurements. Oh well.
Unfortunately, this calculator doesn't support the UK imperial system. All imperial units are the US versions. This is not a huge problem for me as the vast majority of the time I use this calculator will be for communication with Americans.
Converting between units never loses precision. If you convert a number into a new unit, all of the digits of the original unit are retained no matter how many conversions you do afterward. This even applies to entering fractional amounts of inches, which has a special "/" (that is, not the usual divide symbol) button on the calculator. Fractions automatically get converted into a fraction with a power of 2 denominator, but when shown as a decimal value, are clearly still their original value rather than rounded. This is really impressive.
Another great part of the calculator's interface is the unusual number of edge cases built in to display as many digits as possible at all times. If needed, the calculator repurposes its scientific notation/fraction digits into a bonus pair of digits after the decimal place:
I thought this was a bug when I first saw it!
It also has a fourteen-segment display to the left of the main seven-segment display, the first calculator in my collection to feature one. This is used for some of the measurements that don't have dedicated segments in the LCD. But it can also display the minus sign, so MILE ends up dropping the E in sufficiently long negative numbers:
Notice here that it's also using the uppermost segment of the last digit as a minus sign for the scientific notation digits. This seems to suggest that these are not intended to show scientific notation and were originally designed to display inches with fractions, and were then repurposed for scientific notation:
In general, the interface shows an incredibly creative approach to using the LCD panel that I've never seen on any other calculator. Looking through CI's range, some of their other calculators seem to feature a similar or possibly identical display, which suggests it's a standard one that they reuse for all of their calculators.
My collection is now at 19 calculators and I have every major type of calculator:
Standard
Financial
Programmer
Scientific
Graphing
I would consider this another category from all of those, the "unit converter" calculator type. Just as scientific calculators often include programmer functionality in their BASE-N modes, this is definitely not something that this calculator is uniquely capable of, but it is something it's uniquely capable in. It is to unit conversion what my DM16L is to BASE-N arithmetic and logic.
Having a totally new kind of calculator is rare and exciting with a collection my size, which is why I've found the CI converter calculator so much more interesting than my other recent additions, which have been scientific and graphing calculators.
It ticks boxes for my calculator collecting, is genuinely useful to me and has a very unusual set of capabilities and user interface. Love it when that happens!

Millie Winchester- Season 1
Shadow- 3
Sam entered the motel room to look for Millie and Dean just as they were looking for him.
"Dudes, I've got to talk to you." "Dude, we've got to talk to you." Sam, Millie and Dean said at the same time.
Sam proceeded to tell his siblings about how he found Meg talking to something at an altar filled with human hearts and other ancient items, along with the Zoroastrian symbol in blood.
"So, hot little Meg is summoning the Daeva?"
"Looks like she was using that black altar to control the thing."
"So, Sammy's got a thing for the bad girl." Dean chuckled, while Sam and Millie rolled their eyes.
"What's the deal with that bowl again?" Millie asked.
"She was talking into it. The way witches used to scry into crystal balls or animal entrails. She was communicating with someone."
"With who? With the Daeva?" Dean asked.
"No, you said those things were savages. No, this was someone different. Someone who's giving her orders. Someone who's coming to that warehouse." Sam explained, as Millie paused then sat down at the nearby table to flip through the files there.
"Holy crap." Millie muttered, when she found what she was looking for.
"What?"
"What we were going to tell you earlier. Dean pulled a favour with his..." Millie cleared her throat, not wanting to discuss her brother's sex life. "...friend, Amy, over at the police department. The complete records of the three victims. We missed something the first time."
"What?"
"The first victim, the old man? He spent his whole life in Chicago, but he wasn't born here. Look where he was born." Millie said, handing Sam the file.
"Lawrence, Kansas."
"Mm-hmm. Simon, second victim. He was here for college, but his home town was Lawrence, Kansas." Millie said, handing him Simon's file.
"Meredith, third victim- turns out she was adopted. And guess where she's from." Dean said, handing Sam the last file, which had Lawrence, Kansas listed as birthplace.
"Holy crap." Sam muttered.
"Yeah." The two nodded.
"I mean, that is where the demon killed Mom. That's where everything started. So, you think Meg's tied up with the demon?" Sam suggested.
"I think it's a definite possibility." Millie shrugged, as Dean did the same.
"But I don't understand. What's the significance of Lawrence? And how do these Daeva things fit in?"
"Beats me. But I say we trash that black altar, grab Meg, and have ourselves a friendly little interrogation." Dean said.
"No, we can't. We shouldn't tip her off. We've got to stake out that warehouse. We've got to see who, or what, is showing up to meet her." Sam said.
"I'll tell you one thing. I don't think we should do this alone." Dean told them.
Sam and Dean entered the motel room with bags full of weapons, while Millie finished up her message to John.
"We think we've got a serious lead on the thing that killed Mom. So, uh, this warehouse- it's 1435 West Erie. Dad, if you get this, get to Chicago as soon as you can." Millie said, hanging up.
"Voicemail?" Sam asked.
"Yeah. Jesus, what'd you two get?" Millie asked, looking at all the weapons.
"We ransacked that truck. Holy water, every weapon that we could think of, exorcism rituals from about a half dozen religions. I'm not sure what to expect, so I guess we should just expect everything." Sam explained. Millie nodded and the three began loading their guns.
"Big night." Dean remarked.
"Yeah. You nervous?" Sam asked.
"No. Why, are you?" Dean asked.
"No. No way." Sam said, with Millie rolling her eyes at their 'tough guy' fronts. The pair just ransacked the car, because they were about to face a 2,000 year old demon, which had never been encountered before. But, yeah, sure- no one's nervous. "God, could you imagine if we actually found that damn thing? That demon?"
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves, all right?" Millie warned him. The most important thing tonight was surviving.
"I know. I'm just saying... what if we did? What if this whole thing was over tonight? Man, I'd sleep for a month. Go back to school- be a person again."
"You want to go back to school?" Dean asked, as Millie paused what she was doing, too.
"Yeah, once we're done hunting the thing."
"Huh."
"Why? Is there something wrong with that?" Sam asked. Millie looked cautiously between her brothers. They couldn't afford a fight breaking out. Not with what they were about to face.
"No, no, it's great. Good for you."
"I mean, what are you two gonna do when it's all over?" Sam asked.
"It's never gonna be over. There's gonna be others. There's always gonna be something to hunt." Dean answered.
"But there's got to be something that you want for yourself." Sam said. "I mean, Millie, you really wanted to do the whole travelling thing, right?"
Millie looked up, not having expected Sam to remember her desire to travel. Even when she was little, she would collect postcards from around the world. "I mean-"
"Millie does travel. We've practically been everywhere across the country." Dean interrupted.
"Oh, come on. You really think going from state to state, staying in motels to hunt is what Millie had in mind for travelling. Now, come on, there has got to be something that you want, Dean."
"Yeah, I don't want you to leave the second this is over, Sam." Dean snapped.
"Dude, what's your problem?" Sam asked. Dean sighed, leaning against the dresser for support as Sam and Millie watched him, sadly.
"Why do you think I drag you and Millie everywhere? Why do you think I came and got you at Stanford in the first place?"
"'Cause Dad was in trouble. 'Cause you wanted to find the thing that killed Mom." Sam recalled.
"Yes, that, but it's more than that, man. You and me and Millie and Dad- I mean, I want us... I want us to be together again. I want us to be a family again." Dean revealed.
"Dean," Sam started, softly. "We are a family. I'd do anything for you and Millie. And I know Millie would do anything for us. But things will never be the way they were before."
Dean was silent for a moment, as he tried to figure out what he wanted to say. "They could be."
"I don't want them to be." Sam said, breaking both his siblings' hearts, even though one knew it was coming. "I'm not gonna live this life forever. Dean, when this is all over, you're gonna have to let me go on my own way."
The three shared a look, before Sam cleared his throat. "I'm gonna make sure we got everything."
Sam left the room, and suddenly it was just the two older Winchester siblings. Millie glanced up at Dean, who was looking around the room for something to distract him.
"Hey." Millie called out, causing Dean to look up at her curiously. Millie offered a kind smile. "You still got me."
Dean watched her for a moment, then gave a half smile. "Yeah, I know."
***************
Later that night, Sam led them to the altar where Meg was. The siblings grunted as they climbed the elevator gate until they reached the top room. While Meg chanted in an ancient language, the Winchester quietly slipped through the space between the gate and the wall. The three drew their guns as they hid behind some crates, aiming at Meg.
"Guys." Meg called out, causing the siblings to exchange a stunned look. "Hiding's a little bit childish, don't you think?"
"Well, that didn't work out like I'd planned." Dean huffed. Meg turned to face the Winchesters.
"Why don't you come out?" Meg suggested. The three, seeing no point in hiding, stood up from behind the crates. They walked towards Meg, who was doing the same, with their guns still raised. "Sam, I have to say, this puts a real crimp in our relationship."
"Yeah, tell me about it."
"So, where's your little Daeva friend?" Millie asked.
"Around. And that shotgun's not gonna do much good." Meg smirked.
"Oh, don't worry, sweetheart. The shotgun's not for the demon." Dean assured her.
"So, who is it, Meg? Who's coming? Who are you waiting for?" Sam asked.
"You." Meg smiled.
A shadow demon formed on the wall, which knocked Sam onto the floor, and Millie and Dean into the crates behind them. Sam grunted in pain as claw marks from the demon appeared on Sam's face.
