I find Doey so interesting, I'd say he's the most unique PPT character/monster in the game. There's endless nuance in his behaviors and actions! So much to psycho-analyze!!

Spreading my orange Kevin agenda... Read my ramblings... This is going to be stupidly long as I try to explain everything here so I apologize in advance.
To try to break this down, basically the main reason I think Kevin is orange and not red is because of the arrangement of the heads in his monster form, which are arranged in a similar "triangle" fashion to the colors on Doey himself (one on his top-right, one on his top-left, one on the bottom-center). Not only that, but this color arrangement is ALSO present in his logo (two "tall" yellow and orange letters - d and h, and one "low-hanging" red letter between them - g), so I get the impression that this was done on purpose rather than a coincidence. So, looking at his monster form, Kevin is easily identifiable by his angry expression, and with this arrangement in mind he corresponds to the orange color placement.
So, then, between the last two heads, how did I determine which one is Matthew and which one is Jack? The answer is going back to the logo and looking at the hands. Each one is posed differently, and I feel that this is reflective of each boy's personality. The orange hand is a fist, which further supports that color representing Kevin due to his aggression. The red hand is pointing, which I feel is a good representation of Matthew's leadership and charisma. So then Jack is yellow, the open hand, by process of elimination. You could counterargue that a pointing finger could be accusatory, and that a fist in the air could represent leadership. But because of the previous point about the consistent arrangement of the colors/faces, I'm pretty confident about Kevin being orange, so that really just leaves me with the other interpretation.
I also think that these colors make more sense when thinking about the actual body parts that the colors are applied to. Orange is one of Doey's arms, which I think fits much better for Kevin than the legs would. Meanwhile, I think the legs work well for Matthew because he's the "support" and stability of the trio. It also makes the "three boys in a trench coat" jokes work better this way lol, you make Matthew the "legs" of the disguise because he's the oldest and tallest to carry the other two but then don't even make him the color of the legs? smh
Then my last two points are a bit more minor, but I wanted to mention anyway:
Firstly, the emotional association of the colors. I feel like the red Kevin fanon is specifically because red is seen as "the angry color" or "the bad color" (Kevin is NOT bad or evil FYI but you know how some people are about this sort of thing...), but then they're forgetting that red is also the color of love. (I mean hello, we're talking about the same game where Bobby BearHug exists?) Matthew has so much love for friends and family, I think it suits him well. And then orange is still a "fiery" color that can fit for Kevin's intense emotions, yeah?
Then secondly, the official "order" of the boys. Their experiment numbers are given a letter at the end to differentiate the three, with Jack being 1322A, Kevin being 1322B, and Matthew being 1322C. Youngest to oldest. And, if Kevin is orange instead of red, it would also make them ordered by color hue. A, B, C. Yellow, orange, red. It just makes sense, it feels right. It feels like something that would be done on purpose. Especially when combined with everything else I've already pointed out in this post.
Gonna finish this off with addressing another potential counterargument, though:
"But Doey's own character designer drew art where they color-coded the boys as yellow Jack, orange Matthew, and red Kevin! So doesn't that make those colors official?" Bro they literally say in their post that it "isn't canon" and is just fan art. You can already tell that it's not canon just based on Jack being a literal infant baby that looks nothing like the canon kid we see in the video lol. Furthermore, while Max is Doey's character designer, that doesn't mean they were responsible for any of the symbolism, foreshadowing, etc. regarding his backstory. They designed the character, but that doesn't mean they designed the logo for example. And, interestingly, in their concept art for monster Doey, you know what's noticeably different from the final version? The three heads inside Doey's mouth. They all share the same expression, so we can't tell which one is Kevin in this version. We don't know who was responsible for minor adjustments between this concept art and the final in-game design, so it's possible that someone on the team other than Max wanted that detail to be included. So in other words, I think that if each boy is indeed meant to correspond to a specific color on Doey, I don't think it was Max who chose which kid is which color, nor would they necessarily even know the "correct" color-coding since the possible hints about it that I talk about in this post are easy to miss if you're not hopelessly brainrotted like I am, and aren't important to understanding the lore. So they may have just fallen into the same "red = angry" logic that most of the fandom did.
But yeah whatever, man. I just wanted to get this out there.

Kevin Is An Autistic Child.
If One More Person Makes Kevin Out Too Be a Monster I'm Gonna Fucking Lose It. He's An Autistic Child Who Has Gone Through Terrible Trauma. Not Some Crazy Monster.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Screenshot From Poppy Playtime VHS From Chapter 4. Character Labeled Scientist 4 Talking About Kevin Also Know As 1322B. Quote "The "Neural Abnormalities" noted in Dr. Newman's Report Are Detailed On Connection To Behavioral Issues Demonstrated Within Playcare." End Quote. ]
He's Autistic. He Claims Its To Loud. (People With Autism Tend To Be Sensitive to Light,, Noise And Etc.) He Has Meltdowns and People Just Feeding Into The Idea Of Him Being A Rage Filled Monster Upsets Me. I Believe We've Seen Some Of Kevin When He's Calm Before But,, Its Hard 2 Nail Down When And Who Is Fronting.
He Is Just More On Edge Then The Others. He's Not A Monster. Shout Of To The Person Who Pointed Out Him Being A "Problem Child" And The "Everything's too loud. TOO LOUD!" Line Are Signs. (People With Autism Tend To Be Labeled As Problem Children For Needing More Accommodations)
"CAN'T TRUST ANYONE!!! THE GENTLE VOICES LIE!! YOU LIE!! I tried to be better. To be who they needed. Not smart enough, not good enough. NOT-"
I've Seen Some People Read This As Kevin Talking About Jack And Matthew But,, I See This As Him Venting About The Teachers And Therapists. They Constantly Put Him Down And Treated Him Like a Burden. He Acted Out Since They Wouldn't Listen To Him Not Cus, He Wanted To Be Mean And Rude

My breakdown of the Doey timeline, cuz whynot
Combination of my own theories/conjecture and what's actually in the game.
We see Jack getting a Doey toy for Christmas of 92, as well as a trip to the factory. The trip to the factory happens in Jan of 93 and of course Jack falls in.
This makes Jack an unplanned experiment. My theory--since he wasn't trained/prepped in the Game Station or Playcare, and the scientists had to kinda scramble to get anything salvageable of him, that left proto-Doey in a pretty bad/unstable state.
The fact that he had a Doey toy that he already loved so much could be what saved him. Kids are shown to have "assigned toys" at the Game Station, which makes me think a bond with the character/toy is necessary for the kids to adapt to their new bodies, and maybe even make the child take on personality traits of the toy's character.
1322 was too unstable to survive on his own. So another child was selected--Kevin. It seems the scientists hoped Kevin's physical strength would balance out Jack's lack of physical training before the process, and Jack's good temper would balance out Kevin's (perceived) bad one. (I think there's more to Kevin than just "angry child angry and violent at everything". I think he was abused and probably neurodivergent, maybe autistic. Probably on the cusp of a very rough puberty as well. But as a 90s "problem child" myself, I'm not surprised he was just dismissed as a bad kid with no hope. Heartbroken, yes. Surprised? No.)
Sidenote here--I do wonder if they'd gotten the idea of using multiple subjects in the same experiment from the Prototype. Not sure if that would have been something the Prototype would have been doing yet at this point. But I do think it's interesting to call out that the Prototype is not the only experiment made from multiple sources. (I think Poppy may also be such a one but that's some wild conjecture on my part and a post for another day.)
We know Kevin is second because he's described as 1322B. However I think the incident with Jack's parents happened before Matthew was added.
Jack's parents get invited to see Doey. Now, who wrote that letter and why? I'm not completely sure on the details, but I think the main reason it got APPROVED was for the sake of conducting a test. I think it's POSSIBLE someone like Stella may have been making a genuine attempt to do good, but that wouldn't've been reason enough on its own to make this happen.
So Jack's parents rock up to Playtime so the scientists can see how 1322 will react. We've all heard the tape so we know the jist of it, but here's what I think happened internally with Doey. Jack and Kevin's personalities and memories were still muddled. Kevin saw Jack's mom, recognized her as "mom", not realizing she is NOT actually HIS mother. I believe his parents had been abusive, so what Kevin THOUGHT he was doing was fighting back at his own abusers, not some other kid's kind parents. Between that and being in a body he could barely control with a strength he can barely comprehend...Well. Again. We all heard the tape.
So, time to stabilize. Enter Matthew. Responsible, kind, and older. Perfect to wrangle the two younger boys into a fully functioning experiment, ready to be useful to Playtime co. (I kinda gagged typing that. Playtime Co is bastards.)
And y'know? I'd say it mostly worked. From his monologues in the prison, it sounds like Doey wasn't always the most cooperative. He had a bit of a mischievous streak. But I get the impression he didn't lash out or attack until Safe Haven was destroyed. And who wouldn't be broken by that?

“Ah, ah, ah, don’t spoil the surprise~” The voice changed to something jovial before lowering dangerously, “Not only do you lie and poke and hurt, but you have the nerve to steal what belongs to me!?”
Title: Playful Dragons and Rag Dollies
Word Count: 5,563
Fandom: Poppy Playtime
Main Characters: Doey the Doughman, Kevin Barnes, Amelia Martinez/Fiona Feelings (Original Character)
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Content Warnings: Off-screen violence, blood, mind alteration, death, empathy powers gone wrong, people getting eaten
Prompt: Writer's Choice - Bloody Only You - General - Unable to believe that someone could cause this much damage until they find out who did it.
Summary: Part of the Bloody Hearts Bingo challenge. Bloody Heart Prompt: Only You. Days after Experiment 1327 was created, the scientists discovered that the subject they used was one of the only people 1322B cared gently for, suffering the brash consequences of the choice.
As my life unfolds, I cannot believe that I was able to write a 5K one-shot in 4 days. The power of hyperfixation and escape from reality. For the @bloodyheartsbingo challenge, I wanted to complete a "Bloody Heart Bonus" at least once. It entails writing dark/whump-like prompts and being able to get bingo for other people fast. I found a prompt that I thought would fit Doey from "Poppy Playtime" since I'm obsessed with him and the lore currently. I want to explore Kevin Barnes making friends and what he would do if someone were to hurt said friend. This ended up being a piece of fluff and angst with Raggedy Ann and Andy vibes. All the violence and whump happen off-screen/is implied, but I tried. I know the timeline of this piece is iffy, but I definitely know this happens before the Hour of Joy.... hopefully.
Thank you and I hope you enjoy!

(Report on 1402.)
Floey notes pre experiment
"Reports have shown that 1322 has been really uncooperative. Showing it would rather not answer questions or attack the other scientists.
Typically we do believe this is mostly the cause of 1322B (formerly Kevin Barnes) and we have come up with a desperate and yet possible solution.
Kevin, before he was processed had a friend. Her name is Taylor. Despite the two being complete opposites it is shown they have good chemistry. Taylor, while being well behaved, is shown to get into mischief herself for a sweet treat, best to keep note of that.
Taylor has proven to be a good way to "Put the fire out" of 1322's rage issues. While the two were friends, Kevin has shown to be less irritable and has caused less issues for us. While his behavior hasnt been FULLY stopped, it is shown the two are a great pair.
We have decided to take Taylor, (Now known as 1402) and put her up for processing to our more feminine dough mascot "Floey".
If we're correct, "Floey" should be able to calm 1322, Aka "Doey" down and make him more cooperative.
We'll wait a few weeks for her to settle post processing and put her through a few test herself, afterwards we'll put the two in a room to test their dynamic and write down the outcome.
While they wont remember who they were, they'll might still have the connection, hopefully 1322A and C wont cause to much a disturbance to said connection."

Holding Back
Tumblr media
Dr. Sukonoko: "You try dealing with 1322B's anger issues by night and constantly be bothered by his friend by day."
Dr. Carrizales: "Wow, you look rough."
Dr. Carrizales: "The Dahl boy? Still won't leave you alone, huh?"
Dr. Sukonoko: "You should've seen the commotion that boy started. You'd think a frail little thing like that shouldn't be able to fight against four grown adults, yet here we are. He snuck up to me literally a while ago, do the caretakers need to put a bell on that boy or something?"
Dr. Carrizales: -she sighs- "You know, you could try that thing they wanted to do with 1187, right?"
Dr. Sukonoko: "What does that have to do with anything? Their planned-to-be bargaining chip got adopted anyway."
Dr. Carrizales: "No, I mean- we both agree that Joseph's holding back with his game station results, right? I'm just saying, he could be eligible..."
Dr. Sukonoko: "And you're suggesting what, exactly?"
Dr. Carrizales: "Strike a deal with the kid. Make him promise to do better in the games, and he gets to 'visit Kevin while he's sick'. Once we do our thing on the boy, we can hold his safety over 1322's head to keep him in line."
Dr. Sukonoko: "...Won't hurt to try."

I dont know if someone asked about your opinion on Doey the doughman but how do you feel when you lied to 1322B's friend?

Good catch, that's exactly what I was trying to imply with that line.
The Kevin in this story was unfortunately abused and neglected in turns till he was around jacks age when he was abandoned with Playtime. No idea if they're still alive but it doesn't really matter because even with the horrible things playtime has done to him he was still better off than if they'd kept them.
This absolutely plays into his trust and anger issues. Especially since before he was pulled to become part of Doey he thought things were getting better. He had friends! Some of the grown up's seemed to actually care about him! He was being fed regularly!
Then he become project 1322B and things became very painfully familiar again. Of course those kind gentle adults had been lying to him, of course they were now being threatened and starved and worked to death.
Makes Jack and Matthew trying to convince him that things weren't supposed to be that way even harder even with their memories all mixed together because look where they are, look how often he's been right and how much that's kept them alive.
Then Susan shows up and yes there's the guilt of having killed Jacks parents (thinking he had, one of them for real) again but also sooooo much suspicion because it's been 12 years and Poppy showed back up at the same time and an employee??? this has to be a trick by the prototype or the doctor. No he doesn't know what kind of a trick but that doesn't mean he's wrong!
Susan knows about Kevins parents abandoning him too, found the paperwork for when he was released to playtime. She doesn't care about them though and hasn't tried to find out what happened to them or like tracked them down for any kind of revenge she just wrote them off and went MY son now.
Hey. hey hey hey. Horrible realization I just had.
In chapter 12 of Love Him Til The Day That You Die Sawyer says this:
Tumblr media
That means Mrs. Barnes is still alive. (or at least was, at the point of Sawyer getting this information)
That means Kevin wasn’t orphaned, he was surrendered. Either his parents couldn’t or wouldn’t, (which is probably more likely given his anger issues, implied abuse/trauma, and implied autism.) take care of him, and he was surrendered to Playtime Co. probably at a young age.
God. Imagine knowing your parents are out there, knowing that you’re not in this orphanage because they’re incapable or dead, but because they didn’t want you.
Jesus Christ, I don’t think I’d be able to ever trust anyone again.

Something I've been curious about is what the PPT kids looked like when they were human.. So, it was about time I started designing! Yarnaby/Quinn being my first idea, that's why he's more detailed than the rest.
Tumblr media
Theo's based on his actual in-game photo (or was it revealed in the ARG? Idk at this point), Matthew's based on a GH animation (I'll show the references beyond the "read more" section)
And, strangely enough, Marie's design is heavily based on....yet another GH animation- ..Hm-

Oh, completely random silly thought. It's funny how Jack, Kevin, and Matthew are 1322A, 1322B, and 1322C respectively, because...
Jack Ayers Kevin Barnes ...Matthew Hallard
Looks like someone didn't get the memo... /j It would've been funny if they all matched their letters, but it also probably would've been too on-the-nose, huh?
