12Playlists #7 - "World Cup"
Month 7 of 12playlists had the theme "World Cup". I have to admit that my first musical thought here was "Oh god, in 2 years Baddiel and Skinner are going to re-release that stupid song as '50 years of hurt'".
Let's not think about that and instead take a trip through the last 12 tournaments:
1970 - Stevie Wonder - Higher Ground The 1970 tournament in Mexico was the first where teams realised they'd need to train for playing at altitude.
1974 - Red Snapper ft. Alison David - Seeing Red Red cards were brought into the world cup in 1970 but everyone was too nice to get one. Carlos Caszely of Chile made his mark by being the first player to see red in 1974.
1978 - Blondie - Atomic Bit tenuous, but this is played in Trainspotting shortly before the immortal line "I haven't felt that good since Archie Gemmill scored against Holland in 1978!" (That link is to the goal, not the Trainspotting scene. SFW.)
1982 - Los Campesinos! - For Flotsam I applaud LC!'s attempts to describe all aspects of life via football metaphors. Not only does this song go through the melancholy of summer in odd-numbered years but it also has the line "I've thrown my goalkeeper forward, she's catenaccio", which seems appropriate for Italy's brutal defensive line in 1982.
1986 - Rodrigo & Gabrielle - Diablo Rojo Back to Mexico, so here's a Mexican guitar duo showing some of the finest hand control since Maradona.
1990 - Giorgio Moroder Project - To Be Number One A tournament so boring that the back-pass rule had to be invented (ruining the lives of goalkeepers everywhere), and prompted 3 points to be given out for wins rather than 2. The official song of the cup was done by Giorgio Moroder before Daft Punk dug him up and made an Italo Disco pastiche album.
1994 - The Supremes - You Keep Me Hangin' On Picked a Supremes song here in honour of Diana Ross's penalty in the opening ceremony which almost nabbed her a space in the England squad.
1998 - Del Amitri - Don't Come Home Too Soon France inflicted Brazil's worst ever World Cup defeat in the final. Doesn't seem quite so bad now though. This was also the last time Scotland got to the tournament, and Del Amitri recorded this to "encourage" the team. Who knows how far we'd have gotten if those miserable gits had written something a bit more lively?
2002 - Santana - Samba Pa Ti Things got a bit better for Brazil this time around.
2006 - La Plage - Coup de Boule In his last ever game, Zinedine Zidane cemented his status as a French national hero and also inspired this song. (Translation.)
2010 - Queen - Save Me This time it was Luis Suarez's turn to make a name for himself (and I think he'd also be a bit jealous of dear old Freddie's gnashers.)
2014 - Monty Python - Always look on the bright side of life It was destiny! A chance to erase the pain of 1950! and... That 3-0 defeat in 1998 suddenly doesn't seem so bad. (See also: sadbrazilians.tumblr.com)

My first effort in the 12playlists challenge.
For the theme "you're so cool" I chose artists and songs that I, at some point, thought were the coolest thing since sliced cucumber. I still think most of them are.
