Roevember, Day 12: Free Day

(I missed the earlier prompts so I'm taking advantage of the free day to introduce Merlwaen, actually the first character I created in FFXIV but one I hadn't played past the opening cutscene until recently!)

Merlwaen Nahctnebbwyn was born and raised in Limsa Lominsa, the only daughter of two fishers: Nahctnebb, her birth mother, and Long River, Nahctnebb's wife who adoped Merlwaen at a young age. Instilled with her mothers' love of the sea, Merlwaen set out to become a sailor herself when she came of age.

In her years at sea, Merlwaen has served aboard merchant, cargo, and passenger vessels and is as at ease on deck as on land, but Limsa Lominsa will always be home, and she stops in when she can to visit her mums and regale them with tales of her adventures.

The Calamity changed the seascape as well as the land, and much has changed in her beloved city as well. Visiting home once again after many moons away, Merlwaen's mothers laud her hard work and successes and nudge her to consider her future: might she consider staying closer to home? Settling down perhaps, finding a nice girl?

The prospect is not unappealing... and so, after some consideration, Merlwaen registers with Limsa's Adventurer's Guild, and sets out to re-acquaint herself with her home and the surrounding lands, and see what new adventures lie in wait for her here.

A/n: I’m finally back with a new imagine! Life has been hectic, my schedule has gotten so intense to the point where it’s difficult to find time to write with edu practicums, dance, work, and college it just hard to fit writing into the mix but I’m back with slow updates!

“You seriously aren’t going to see him tonight are you?” Exclaimed belly

You two were currently in your room as you were getting ready for you’re date with your ex boyfriend, with belly sitting on the foot of your bed talking you out of this date.

“Look, he genuinely sorry for what he did…” you said “I promise.”

“Yeah but he cheated on you with a blonde bimbo last summer!” Said belly “don’t you remember that?”

Indeed you did remember that mere memory, everyone at the summer house were trying to cheer you up with nothing working, you spent the month of July in your room as you cried in misery. After catching him making out with a blonde girl, you swore off of guys for the rest of your life, until you saw him working at the little gas station on your first day back at cousins, apologizing for what he did.

“Belly that was last summer.” You said “he changed.”

You could say you were trying to convince belly, but you were trying to convince yourself, but hey. What can go wrong?

“Y/n don’t you look lovely!” Exclaimed Susannah as she eyed you up and down “what’s the special occasion?”

“Y/n here has a date… with her ex!” Exclaimed belly

“Wait… the one that cheated on you last summer?” Asked Jeremiah as he raised his eye brows

“Yes Jere the one that cheated on me last summer…” you said “besides he apologized.”

“Y/n I don’t think this is a great idea…” said your mother “you were so heartbroken when it happened.”

“I was 16 mom…” you said “besides I’m 17!”

“I don’t know y/n.” Said laurel “what if he breaks your heart again?”

“He won’t!” You said, you were interrupted with a car honk

“The dude can’t even be fazed to come to the door!” Said Jeremiah “y/n you are not going out with him!”

“Watch me.”

With that you opened the door and shut it

“Thank you for giving me another chance.” Said Brice as he held your hand “I was so heartbroken last summer when you left me.”

You smiled as you nodded along to what he was saying, but your mind was preoccupied on something else.

Jeremiah Fisher… and how you wish he was here with you on a date instead of Brice Hamilton.

“I’m going to the restroom.” Said brice as he got up, you formed a faint smile before nodding your head. He got up and left, a few seconds later. His phone lit up

You picked up the phone as you read a text message

The whole conversation on his phone was full of explicit messages to the same girl that he cheated on you with last summer, you looked up fighting tears in your eyes, you placed your half of the pay on the table before getting up and leaving

You walked to the summer house, heels in hand as you had smeared mascara on your face. You headed towards the pool, sitting on a lounge chair.

You stared into the night sky, looking at the stars. Your thoughts were interrupted with a door slam

It was Jeremiah

“Back from your date soon?” Asked Jeremiah “I thought you would be out till 12.”

“It didn’t work out…” you said, eyes not leaving the night sky. Jeremiah sat next to the lounge chair beside you

“He’s not worth your tears.” Said Jeremiah as he stroked your cheek with the padding of his thumb

“He’s been hooking up with her all this time.” You choked out, Jeremiah pulled you close to his chest, comforting you as he stroked your hair.

“Things will get better.” Said jeremiah as he continued to hug you

“You really think so?” You asked as you wiped your cheek with your hand, letting out a smile

“I know so.” Said Jeremiah as he smiled, you face in his hand

The night ended with a kiss and let’s just say that the relationship between you and Jeremiah blossomed.

[Fun Facts About Me]

I don’t like making grammatical errors, they are irritating and embarrassing (in my opinion). However, mistakes are part of life and I have to learn to how to move on. That said; if you do see some grammar mistakes please let me no and I’ll try to fix it. (Ugh, it’s embarrassing that I was born, and live in, Mississippi yet I make numerous grammatical errors. I’m so bad, most of the time, at English, it’s hilarious.)

I have a tendency to ramble, over explain and procrastinate. I can also appear quite pushy, this is probably because of some deep seated worry that I haven’t yet uncovered.

I love mysteries, they are my favorite genre and I especially love the femme fatale mysteries or mysteries with a female lead.(IE; Miss. Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Murder She Wrote and there’s more but my mind is blank right now.)

I have a soft spot for cute fuzzy cats and I like taking photos of scenery that I believe to be beautiful.

Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite books, it was a childhood favorite and it still is to this day. (The animate movie and the book are my preferred versions of Alice In Wonderland.)

You sighed, frowning at your friend.

Tsireya grumbles under her breath, struggling to finish a crafted beaded top for herself, unable to get this specific knot.

"Hey, uh," you clear your throat, cringing as she twists a knot wrong,"Do you need help?"

She huffs, taking a deep breath through her nose and gently placing the top down,"Yes, that would be helpful, I know you're able to get the specific knotting."

You smile softly, sitting beside her to help get the last section done for her. You tie it off, showing her the finished product and she smiles thankfully, sighing in relief.

"Thank you.." she lays back against the floor of her marui,"I am sorry, I do not know why I am so.. tense."

You snicker, nodding in understanding. You move over to her, laying down besides her and stare at the ceiling,"How was your "date" with Tetwa?"

"Ugh, he was so brash!" She sits up, waving her hands around,"He was obviously only wanting some.. intimacy.. and kept going on about how great of a fisher he was! The thing is, I have seen what he has brought back; it is not impressive yet!"

You snort, covering your mouth fondly,"That could go two ways, Reya," your dirty mind always managed to find something funny.

She blushes, rolling her eyes with a soft laugh before going silent.

"Hey, are you alright?" You gaze up at her.

She sighs, laying back down to stare at the ceiling,"Everyone else has.. begun to have casual fun and intimacy by now.." Her voice is soft, embarrassed,"I want to know what I am missing out on.. but the guys here- ugh."

You turn your head to watch her, nodding gently,"Have you considered any girls? In the forest, it is not uncommon to be fluid with that sort of thing.." You blush lightly.

She shakes her head before peering over at you,"No.. I guess I've never actually given that some thought. Have you..?"

You bite your lower lip before turning away, blushing with a soft nod,"A few times.. more for fun than anything else. You'd be quite surprised, really, women tend to know where everything is rather than having to tough the embarrassment of showing.. you know?"

She nods, gazing at you softly before quickly looking away, a warm blush growing across her cheeks.

Your eyebrows raise, a small smirk growing,"It was also rewarding, giving the pleasure. Since Lo'ak and I have the same 5 fingers on our hands," you lift your hands towards the ceiling almost to showcase them,"The few experiences I did have, those women loved my fingers.."

Tsireya's face is warmer, eyes wide as she lightly bites her lip,"Ye-yes, um.. They're quite useful with your crafting, I can only imagine.." she whispers, and you notice that cute little glint in her eyes that Tsireya always gets whenever she's curious about something.

"If you'd like.." You smirk, shifting and moving over, bracketing your arms on either side of her head to tower above her. You give her a grin and tilt your head, both serious and not, in fear of her rejecting you,"I could show you? Since you've never tried it with another girl..I'm really quite good with them."

@whetstonefires tagged me! 17 was missing, and I searched for the meme and found one that had a question 17, so it's back!

1. how many works do you have on AO3?

256! But that's going back 18 years, so it's an average of a little over 14 fics per year.

2. what’s your total AO3 word count?

1,245,329. Which works out to an average of 4900 words per fic, or 69k words/year. Respectable, solid, but I know a lot of people who've written more.

Oh! But there are a couple of podfics in there, which probably skews the words-per-work a bit.

3. what fandoms do you write for?

Uh. A quick count gives me 112 fandoms on my AO3 page, so ... a lot. I regularly write for Yuletide, and I'm polyfannish, so. A lot. I used to be big into Stargate SG-1, so I've written a lot of that but not recently. Other top fandoms include Battlestar Galactica, Buffy, various DC fandoms, various Star Trek and Star Wars fandoms, Babylon 5, Terminator (especially the Sarah Connor Chronicles), the Vorkosiverse, the Goblin Emperor, and Rivers of London.

4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Past Lives (a stalled WIP that is a Star Wars time travel fixit starring Finn)

Lieutenant Bennet's Visit (Temeraire/P&P with Bennet as an aviator)

Darcy's Surprise (sequel to the above fic)

5. do you respond to comments?

Yup! Or, at least, the ones that are more than an emoji or "second kudos!" I value those too, it's just ... what would I say?

6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I don't tend to go in for angsty endings. But, as it happens, I did write an ending lately that was fairly dark.

Fertile Ground, Battlestar Galactica, Simon only bothered to continue the fertility experiments because the others demanded it. Things are different on New Caprica. Warnings for canon-typical ... everything

7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

How would one even judge? I have 256 fics, most of which have positive endings of one sort or another.

8. do you get hate on fics?

Not really? Or, at least, it's probably happened sometime in the last 18 years, but I just deleted it and forgot about it. I am very lucky, I know other writers who've gone through hell.

9. do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Nope!

10. do you write crossovers?

I love crossovers! AO3 thinks I have 38, but a few of those aren't really crossovers, just different corners of the same universe, and one of them is the work that combines most of my Twisting the Hellmouth crossover drabbles into one drabble collection. (The ones where I had several drabbles in a sequence to tell a longer story, I separated out to each be their own fic.) Anyway, it averages out to about two a year, although I have not written as many in the last few years as I did earlier in my fic writing career. Most recently, I have:

Oh, sure, there have been a couple of times people have put some of my fics on those skeevy for-profit websites that pop up every now and again.

Yes! Twice! Both times into Russian. Though oddly enough, none of my Vorkosiverse fics have been translated into Russian. There is a very large and active Russian fandom for the Vorkosigan saga, so if I were going to predict which of my fics would be translated into Russian, it would be those. But no, the two that were translated are a DS9 fic, and a Doctor Who/Mary Poppins crossover.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

That's tough to answer. Does it include the ones that I abandoned, say, 15 years ago and haven't thought of since? I don't tend to post WIPs because I don't like them hanging over me.

Probably Hello, Piccadilly, Hello, Leicester Square, a Wonder Woman post-movie fic about Diana trying to figure out how to live in Man's World. I had a really great hook--they pass Diana off as a war bride--but no real idea where to go from there. Which is why it stalled out after only two chapters.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Worldbuilding, probably.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Endings and action. I am not good at writing either of them. The thing I am most likely to need a beta's help with is whether or not an ending feels like an ending or if I need to wrap things up better, and if so, what do I need to do to wrap things up. And action bores me, and it's really hard to write something that bores you, so I try to avoid needing to write it.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I don't speak any other languages, so I wouldn't do it! Unless maybe I had someone who had already volunteered to translate for me.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Stargate SG-1! It was a spitefic that I wrote because I was so annoyed by all the Broca AUs. "The Broca Divide" was an episode where they all turn into cavepeople, and as part of it Sam Carter kisses her commanding officer, Jack O'Neill, who then takes her to the infirmary before succumbing to the infection himself. There were a ton of fics about that where they have sex instead and she gets pregnant, and afterwards she keeps the baby and they get married and everything is fine and the team stays together and nobody cares about fraternization or anything.

(There were a LOT of Sam/Jack fics out there where like the President or whoever would call them up and say "oh, you're in love? awesome! we'll just waive all the regulations about having a romantic relationship with someone in your chain of command because you're so extra special and awesome. Which really annoyed me.)

Anyway, I got annoyed enough to write a fic where they sleep together as cavepeople and she gets pregnant and things are not fine, actually, there are consequences to it.

Episode Summaries under the cut

121: Under the Lake/Before the Flood - Season 9, Episodes 3 & 4: The Doctor and Clara land on an underwater base in the 22nd century, and see ghosts haunting the base. They find an alien ship on the base with strange writing on the wall. After checking it out, the ghosts attack them. While running away, the crew of the station brings them into a Faraday cage, which is able to keep the ghosts out. The ghosts are also unable to come out when the base is in day mode. The ghosts are intelligent and are working on programming it to constantly be night. They also sent a distress call, which the Doctor cancels and puts the base on lockdown, as he doesn't want the ghosts to succeed in getting out.

They lure the ghosts into the Faraday cage and trap them inside. One deaf crew member is able to read the lips of the ghosts repeated message, which the Doctor realizes are coordinates to the flooded town outside the base. They also realize the strange writing programmed the coordinates into their heads and are what make people become ghosts when they die. They send out a probe and return a stasis pod that they are unable to open. The changes to night and day mode at the base cause a system error and the base starts flooding. The Doctor and two crew members make it to the TARDIS, but Clara and the remaining crew are stuck on the other side of the flooded base. The Doctor takes the crew back to before the village flooded.

They arrive in the past, on the day the spaceship landed. They see that it is essentially a hearse, does not have the strange writing on the wall, and is manned by an alien whose ghost they saw in the future. He explains that he is transporting the body of the Fisher King. In the future, the ghost of the Doctor appears listing out the names of everybody in the order in which they died, including those who are still alive. In the past, they return to the ship to find the Fisher King escaped his tomb and the writing is on the wall. The Fisher King kills the alien, who becomes the first ghost. He soon kills one of the crew who becomes the second.

They take the TARDIS 30 minutes into the past, to when they first landed. The Doctor makes the remaining crew member wait on board the TARDIS and goes to confronts the Fisher King, who plans to turn everybody into ghosts to transmit a signal for his people to come rescue him. The Doctor bluffs by claiming that he erased the words on the ship. The Fisher King returns to his ship to rewrite the words, but finds them still there, just as a device the Doctor activated blows a whole in the dam, causing the flood. The Doctor enters the stasis pod himself, and the TARDIS returns to the future to avoid the flood.

In the future, he emerges from the stasis pod, and sends out a signal to get rid of the ghosts. He reveals that his own ghost was only a hologram that he projected. The rest of the crew get to safety, and the Doctor and Clara leave in the TARDIS.

129: Closing Time - Season 6, Episode 12: The Doctor goes to visit his friend Craig, who he'd met previously. Craig is looking after his baby while his wife takes a short vacation to rest. After noticing some electrical irregularities and a newspaper article about missing people, he gets a job at the toy department of a department store. Craig runs into him there the next day, and while taking the lift are teleported onto a Cyberman ship, but he reverses it and gets him and Craig to safety. He allows Craig to help him investigate the situation.

They discover that the Cyber-ship crashed centuries ago with a single survivor. Recent electrical work for the shop reactivated the ship and it has been slowly draining power and capturing people to convert. The Doctor makes it aboard the ship and is captured, but Craig follows him. They grab Craig and begin to convert him, but the sound of his baby crying causes a surge of emotion that overrides the Cyber programming and he escapes. The Doctor teleports them out and destroys the ship behind them.

Either Orion or Eddie is winning those ghost stories bc Orion knew Aurelia, and she worshiped the god of fear, while Eddie knows Jonathan, Aurelia’s descendant and uses fear in his villain schemes. Then again, Bee is literally a demon, so….

FTH 2023 Listed fandoms snapshot

We had 101 fandoms in the dropdown list this year, including 'other' if you wanted to write in a fandom. So far, there are signups for all but 7 of the listed fandoms ...

For a heartbeat the boy wizard had as many signups as the ineffable husbands, but at present, Good Omens is managing to hold on to a slight lead. Teen Wolf currently holds third place, and K-pop has just edged out Sherlock to grab fourth. Still, with more than a week to go, a handful of signups could shake up the leaderboard, making the next update look entirely different. We'll update every couple days, and then daily as the deadline for signups approaches.
