The affirmation of the Capétiens and the expansion of the royal domain in France (987-1461)
« Atlas historique mondial », Grataloup, Les Arènes, 2019
via cartesdhistoire
In 987, the royal domain (the lands on which the King of France directly exercises his power) was limited to the 98le-de-France. Elsewhere, his dominance rests on more or less strong feodo-vassal links.
Between the Xth and 12th centuries, the king must compose with the influence of the great princes of the kingdom (dukes, counts). They are the ones who elect Hugues Capet to succeed in 987 the last Carolingian, Louis V. Certainly, the Capetians have strengths, starting with the sacred, and they manage to expand their area of influence, but some princes manifest desires for autonomy, such as the Count of Flanders or the Plantagenêts, whose domains extend in 1170 from Normandy to Gascon.
The reigns of Philippe Auguste (1180–1223), Louis VIII (1223–1226) and Saint Louis (1226–1270) mark the affirmation of Capetian power. The former extends his influence in Flanders and Champagne. He triumphs over the Plantagenêts and integrates Normandy, Anjou, Maine (1204) as well as a part of the Auvergne (1213). He starts a push towards the Languedoc pursued by his son Louis VIII. These conquests are then consolidated by St. Louis.
In the 13th century the share of the royal domain in the kingdom increases and with it the direct influence of the king. Less taxable the ties between men and men, his power is increasingly territorialized.
In 1328, the death without heir of Charles IV, the last son of Philippe IV the Bel, raises the question of the royal succession; grafted on the old Franco-English rivalry, it leads to the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Charles VII wins and conquers the entire kingdom except Calais. Despite hardships, war helps strengthen the royal ideology (a very Christian and divine lawful king) and the royal state (especially in its ability to collect taxes). At the end of the Middle Ages, the indirect branch of the Valois thus holds the kingdom firmly.

Often times when reading AOS fics I'll get hit in the face by the fact that so many in the fandom don't understand what Kirk means by no-win scenarios. Too many times I'll see someone write Kirk as a person who will not accept any failure whatsoever because they've equated no-win with all-win or no-lose. That's not what Kirk's on about. He doesn't believe in no-win as in there will always be a silver lining or some type of win to a scenario no matter how bad the odds or failure. Even if the only thing you can say at the end is that you're alive - that's a win. The fact that the Kobayashi Maru kills everyone no matter what they do is what pisses him off so much, a character trait he does in fact share with TOS Kirk who also screwed with the test. So no, Jim doesn't consider Vulcan a no-win. He doesn't consider Khan and Marcus a no-win. He doesn't consider even saving Spock's life by breaking the prime directive and getting demoted a no-win. Because they were wins - some vulcans and Earth were saved, Khan was defeated, Starfleet saved, a Klingon war adverted and Spock is alive. So whenever a fic takes the "I sure hope Jim learned his lesson about no-win scenarios" route I want to bang my head against the wall because he didn't learn anything because there was nothing to learn. At most Kirk's just an arrogant ass who plays too much. He's 22-27 in the first two movies. He has zero experience. He'll grow out of that but not believing in no-win scenarios was something Spock needed to learn from Kirk - that you win some and lose some but at least you won some, not the other way around. Kirk can accept failure so long as it comes with even a minor success. Spock just immediately jumped to the conclusion that they had no hope against Nero alone and failed by never trying.

Prompt #1170
“If something happens, I need you to promise me that you’ll end it. It doesn’t have to be painless. It just needs to be quick.”
The bitter smile they got in return wasn’t reassuring in the slightest.
“Fine. I’ll be your silver bullet.”

I am going to tuck a copy of my v. 1170 Skrim onto my larger hard drive just in case I fuck this downgrade up, because I don't feel like having to backtrack on miniscule levels and praying things still work. But at least it's not a "good god nothing works here" version

Hi! I'm looking for a fic that's on ao3. It's definitely tagged Explicit because there is smut at the end.
Steve is a prince and Eddie is a knight. Steve was showing him around the castle and the whole time Eddie was being rude because Steve didn't act like how he thought he would? Steve was a really nice person and was friends with the staff in the castle and was on a first name basis with everyone. And Eddie was just being an ass about it. It started raining when they went outside and Steve led them to a spot with a cover so they wouldn't hey more wet. I think Eddie asked why Steve continued to treat him well even though he was being rude?
Request 1170! This is The New Guardsmen by Cheer_Nymph!
