“I know it itches, but you have to stop messing with it.”
Miller and John
From this prompt list!
"You know, for all the things I was worried about happening on shore leave, this wasn't one of them." Miller chuckles even as his eyes dart to John's face. His hands are gentle as he spreads the cooling gel over the worst of the sunburn.
John sits patiently with a frown firmly on his face. There's gel on the top of his nose and cheeks, just visible enough to draw his eye down. Distracting.
"I thought you wore a hat?" Miller asks, his voice confused.
"I did." John states with a sigh.
"Huh." Miller was probably wondering how a human being went from white to burned in such a short amount of time.
He scratches absentmindedly at his arm. It's strange, having worked so hard to remember how to move without the armor that he can do it without a thought. Maybe the R&R everyone had been pushing on him had some benefits.
Except for the risk of burning in the sun. He knew he was pale, but this was ridiculous.
“I know it itches, but you have to stop messing with it.” Miller chides.
Of course John went to Miller rather than let Kelly or the rest of Blue Team see that 1. he had gone outside, and 2. the consequences of said venture. Miller worried about normal things like ticket prices and public transportation. He treated John like another awkward guy rather than a timebomb.
"You'll end up with a farmer's tan once it fades but it's not like the gear shows that off. We're gonna have to let the stuff dry before anything else."
John nods and looks at the gel on his arms and face. "Thanks."
"We should stick to something indoors. I heard there's an aquarium a couple blocks north of here." Miller says pulling up his wrist and the cheap chatter on it to look at his itinerary he doesn't know John knows he made. "They have a military discount! I mean if you want."
A grown Spartan has no right looking that sheepish.
"Might be nice seeing animals not trying to attack me." John says and gestures for Miller to lead.
"Oh. Yeah sure!" John can see the wheels turning in Miller's head as he struggles not to follow that line of thought. "It's mostly fish. Fish are calming. You don't have bad experiences with fish, do you?"
John opens his mouth to watch Miller deflate and then he smiles. "Fish are fine."
Miller lights up.
"Just no mushrooms."

Oooh, definitely glee for the fandom asks! <3
Always with the hornets' nests with these ones, I see! Though i don't think there's a fandom out there that isn't in some way a hornets' nest once it gets large enough... hm. Alright. I'm just gonna be as honest as i can be about this, and tag accordingly.
Glee:
my favourite female character: augh. argh. ouph. so difficult. so hard. Since I'm working off of half-remembered show and half recently-rewatched show... its a tossup. Mercedes, Santana, Quinn. Probably Mercedes. She did nothing wrong ever in her entire life <3 well okay maybe except that one time she smashed kurt's car windows (but it was a banger song, though). Can't say Santana because of the Biphobia TM and other things like excessive use of bigotry-based insults, and Quinn. Oh god girl. Cheating is not cool! Funnily enough! So I find them really interesting but 'favourite' is hard to say. Mercedes. Mercedes for sure <3
my favourite male character: Blaine sam blaine sam blaine sam yes. I am imitating ripping petals off of flowers and coming to a conclusion based on which is the last name i said. So I guess that means Sam! But really this is a tie.
my favourite book/season/etc: Mannnnn idk. I don't like shows for seasons as-a-whole. Also i could not tell you what happened in any given season if you held a gun to my head. I'm not good at that. The only shows i know 'seasons' of are Buffy and Teen Wolf because i've watched them like 100000000000 times (exaggeration) for various reasons (mostly fanfiction research).
my favourite episode (if its a tv show): I can tell you my LEAST favourite episode (blame it on the alcohol, thank you Kurt king of biphobia! this is a persona foible it's not the worst episode in the show. by far. by far. it's kind of an average one. I'm just angry at it.) BUT er. Favourite? Idk. Genuinely some of the earlier Kurt-centric stuff was really well done (his convo with Burt... <3) and the Quinn giving birth accompanied by bohemian rhapsody was obviously iconic, but if I'll be honest I couldn't name any episodes of this show (other than That One previously stated, anyway). And yeah most of the time they were named after song titles and No i don't remember those song titles either. I'm just so bad at this. My memory is that of a goldfish's being haphazardly bounced around on a sieve.
my favourite cast member: it would be really funny if I said Demi Lovato [she counts!] but the truth is N/A: i don't know these people !!! They are strangers!! (i don't. follow celebrities. at all. I couldn't even name most of them. They're just people doing a job and their lives are irrelevant to me beyond their ability to perform that job well. I do not need to know where they live and what coffee they drink. Stalker shit tbh. I'm kind of a very private person myself, so rpf-adjacent stuff just... creeps me out. I've never watched a single cast interview in my lifetime and I'm not about to start!)
my favourite ship: Difficult to say! Grave and obvious lie. Blam. It's blam. Quintana is a close runner up though Santana really needs to stop dating people who cheat on the regular (I'll accept Quinn has grown enough not to do this by the time a Quintana coupling would be viable - and satisfying in terms of character arcs - narratively speaking).
a character I’d die defending: Blaine Anderson did something wrong for sure but like Kurt did it first so shrugs. Cancels out. Bad for each other! Case closed!
a character I just can’t sympathize with: genuinely don't remember if I had one of those the first time around because I was like 10 and just didn't pay attention if I didn't care, but Terri and her racist self take that 'prize' this time, alongside the obvious predator in the room [original choir teacher. Sandy? I forget his name immediately after hearing it. He doesn't deserve to be remembered]. Also JBI is just.... a yikes character all around. I mean, he's a blatant stereotype for one, in a the people who wrote this person don't like jews kind of way. Unfortunately common stereotype too, for the era, so not only is he that, he's also lazy. Just a one-note pervert who's the butt of various antisemitic 'jokes' you've heard from era-peer shows a million times over, tired and awful and a sour reminder of bigotry that continues to this day. Really regrettable character who's lack of redeeming qualities was probably purposeful. (I know Rachel and tina are also jewish, but this comes up very rarely and mostly only when santana needs to say something kind of fucked up, as is her modus operandi, for 'comic relief'. Tina's jewish-ness wasn't even canon for several seasons, because she didn't have a surname or a family or anything resembling complex character depth for several seasons. The one time I really remember Rachel's religion being important was when she was pressuring Kurt into believing in some kind of god, which??? don't do that. Bad example. Trying to guilt trip a friend into faith sucks. I take back what i said earlier Mercedes did that too. Boo. Girls try again that was a bad showing all around. Though i have no idea why Kurt went the acupuncture route as his 'secular' option but i think that has to do a lot with the writers doing literally no research ever once in their lives (you can tell they don't by the way they write the football segments of the show, which make no sense according to football fans who watch Glee, of which there are numerous because real life isn't like fiction where you can only like music or sports. Most of the kids in my school year were doing the most of everything ever if they were the 'popular' ones - we do that differently; popularity isn't really based on who know know; for some bizzare reason literally everyone knew who I was? Even people I'd never spoken to?? - but more about like... how much you can do, I guess. Overachievers, but I'm not saying that negatively; these people were generally - generally - very nice, and surprisingly chill for people who had no spare time whatsoever. I'm not entirely sure when they slept; A* across the board, at least one sport, at least one instrument, several extracurriculars, parties every weekend, dozens of friends and an s.o. . Eh? Way too much going on. Scary lifestyle! Impressive burnout rate, probably. Er. Tangent! Back to the scheduled programming).) There's uhhhh there's a lot of bad characters on the show, but i'd say Sandy and Terri and her equally but more loudly racist sister are truly completely irredeemable ones. Like they're not interesting or anything, they're just there to be narrative annoyances (which, in the case of Sandy specifically, is insane. Arrest that man!!! He has actively sexually assaulted minors!!!).
a character I grew to love: difficult to say because I tend to just make an opinion and stick to it. Also i don't remember who i liked at first and who i didn't, this show came out when i was eight. I didn't watch it until I was a little older than that, of course, but I frankly have spotty memory until my late teens, so! I'm not sure!! Quinn, probably. Pink-hair-era Quinn helped me understand her more, and seeing the moments of kindness hidden behind practical cruelty, when you understand her family and situation, makes things make a lot more sense. It takes a lot to get me to sympathise with a cheater, but I can see where Quinn was getting all turned around in her head about life because of her upbringing and socialisation, not to mention the profoundly negative impact cheerios had on her mentally and that the school's culture in general was not exactly a breeding ground for empathy and optimism.
my anti otp: can you tell (klaine). I don't dislike Kurt!!! Please let him have a fun chillaxed boyfriend in new york with his vogue friends. But also please stop attempting to control other people's diets thank you!! Thank you!! I'm of mixed feelings. Blaine and Kurt both did at least one bad, relationship-ending thing, and proved over and over again that they just weren't on the same wavelength in regards to life goals and ways of living it. They can't even share the same living space, which is kind of required for a functional marriage. I don't know, it just seems like they settled for their first proper, serious boyfriend even if that's not really the best match, and I... wish they'd just got to see more of life first, you know? They got married at like 20! Or something! I'm 23, I cannot imagine getting married at 20. That's a baby. Let them live first!
(same for Santana and Brittney, imo. I also don't really like them together because Santana and Brittney have very different ideas regarding monogamy, which is just never going to go down well in the long run. If your girl cheats on you like twenty times and tells you to your face its not cheating in her view of things, but you think it is, break up with her because you'll just make each other miserable. Brittney sort of seems incapable of feeling guilt but if she were, this kind of moral pressure would be Not Good, and obviously Santana isn't comfortable with the idea and doesn't have to be!! Just move on!!! Find other people!!!! Don't marry your first girlfriend if you've broken up like ten times this is simple!!!! Please!!!! But Klaine wins out over Brittana because - in my opinion, glee fandom please do not persecute me, I am known for this specific thing - I see... interactions that verge on abusive between Klaine that I don't see in Brittana. So. Oof? Ex; use of public perception to disguise attack; deliberately hurting Blaine in a stage-combat fencing match (you are not meant to make actual contact in these) and thus using Blaine's own dislike of making his difficulties common knowledge against him in order to 'punish' him. This is no good! Don't do this!!.[Also just to err vaguepost about a comment.... that is. not. what i would call passive aggressive. Physically attacking someone with a sword - no matter the type of sword, fencing foils hurt just as much, they're just not stab-you sharp... er, these days - is just straight-up aggressive.]).
Note that negative things stick in the mind better than positive ones; on a rewatch I may well alter my opinion!
But also I'm really, really stubborn. So it's not likely. Klaine.
#how the fuck do i tag this#glee#glee shite#ask game#anti-klaine#anti-brittana#anti-kurt#though it isn't because i do like him genuinely one of the better characters. he just... doesn't treat blaine great because they're#fundamentally incompatible romantically. and that's fine! but taking this out on each other isn't.#augh. i hate talking about controversial shit a;lksfja;slkf i used to get So Scared of anon hate mobs you have no idea#if i thought something could get that i simply would never ever not one even dare to think it. let alone say it online in a private forum#(dms with my friends) or god forbid a public post#so. this is growth!#you could say i just got a really weird form of catholic guilt about dissenting from public opinion when i was like 14. you'd also probably#be correct! As I was catholic. And all. Not very devout mind you (did not. go to church.) but still#anyways.#... there's so much i could say about brittany as a character but i'd have to rewatch to make sure i was being accurate about her.#so much that isn't exactly glowing commendation. to be clear.#augh. this show gives me so many very very mean thoughts about it. because it does things so very meanly most of the time#it handles beaste well. Coach Beaste is great. 11/10 character#but so much other stuff it gets just so wrong. just so wrong#(also i never finished the show. actually like genuinely i just missed a whole portion of it. so if they fuck up Beaste at some point I hav#not seen I'll be really really mad.)#(I found out about some of the later events-second hand. i don't 100% know how the brittana marriage goes down but i just... don't like it#as a concept. like at all. they're too young and too unstable for that shit.)#(basically; towards the end i was still watching the show on tv. so i missed whole swathes of episodes thanks to how tv works. do not miss#that headache!)#augh. i should shut up now and go to bed. midnight.)#<3 thanks for the ask! Hope i didn't say anything you disagree with too strongly...

For the KH asks: 3 in general, then 11 and 12 for that character!
Kingdom Hearts Ask Game :o) !!
3. Who's your favorite character?
longtime followers have been plagued by my xigbarposting for the past year and a half. i sincerely think he might be the most interesting character in the series right now (though obviously that's really subjective!) in terms of what we know about him, what we don't know, how he interacts with the themes of the story, the potential directions his arc could take.
and on top of all that he's just fucking weird. like, all the angst and Themes and Implications etc and he talks like a teenage surfer in a middle aged man's body. compels the HELL out of me.
11. Do you have any headcanons for them?
oh, millions and millions and millions. i think he has personal beef with santa claus. in all his lifetimes, he has earned himself a permanent place on the naughty list. so no matter what vessel he occupies, no matter where he is on Christmas Eve, santa finds a way to give him a piece of coal. (also, he calls him "santy claus", not like Jack Skellington does, but like a villain in an old christmas movie. he sees him and is like "heyyy, if it isn't santy claus!" and santa goes "YOU")
12. A character they haven't interacted with that they totally should?
im hesitant to say that anything Ought to happen in KH in the future—i think that just leads to disappointment—so i'll just say that i think a lot about Xigbar meeting Megaera. like, neither of them knows who the other is, they just start complaining to each other over martinis, commisserating over how dumb it is when heroes think they can just go rushing into danger like they're indestructible, and also how hard it is to take care of long hair.
#thank you very much for the ask :D !!!!#i sat here for way too long trying to come up with Good Answers to 11 and 12 and decided to just do fun silly dumb ones instead.#credit also to my partner bc they came up with the interaction between xigbar and santa im stealing that joke from them#kh#asks#ask games#xigbar scholarship tag#xigbar meme tag#<-as you can see. ive multiple tags related to this guy.

11 and 12 for shaw 👀
11. In what situation was your character the most afraid they’ve ever been?
Ough there’s a couple of interesting answers to this… because a lot of my other stuff recently has been very serious I’m going to go with a slightly silly answer to this one.
The first time Shaw ever zailed a ship, and I do mean ever, was during the first bomb delivery event. That’s right, this man who had never, ever touched the wheel of a ship in his life got his start delivering live explosives for the Royal Navy. Canonically he got a ship during one of his worst mental health periods to date, and genuinely accepted the job with no real thought for his personal well being.
He made it to the stormbones before realizing what a terrible mistake he made. Realizing that not only was he gambling his own life, he was gambling the lives of his entire crew, he zailed that ship like a madman from that point on. It was, well, harrowing.
He did manage to successfully complete the drop, but succumbed to his own mind blowing guilt for what he’d just done along with growing zee madness & paranoia that he got nabbed by the Royal Beth before he could make it to London. And the Zee has never been kind to this man since!
12. In what situation was your character the most calm they’ve ever been?
He’d say it was the day he was finally let back into the University, and being able to set up his office again. The quiet ritual of unpacking things along with the satisfaction of knowing that he’s done the work to get there really stuck with Shaw.
(In truth, it’s the thoughtless peace that comes with getting lost in the Mirror Marsh’s flora. Laying down amidst the fields of orange lilies and feeling every piece of his mind fall away. Shaw tries not to think about it, and his efforts to avoid falling through mirrors have been paying off more frequently. But it’s hard to resist that blissful calm, even knowing you’re nothing more then prey there…)
#zeeposting#august shaw#ask game#tyyy for the ask this one was fun#other contender for number 11 was the day Lenore died but honestly upon closer thought#so much of that fear turned into grief so quickly that idk if it really fit the spirit of the question#he’s. normal about parabola btw. don’t worry about him#ask to tag ?

OC not so nice ask game if you’re taking asks for that!! I would love to know about wound + alone for anyone from Herald
hello!! i'll do these for amelia (alex's sister who has suddenly made herself much more plot relevant) (selected via wheel spin)!
wound: How does your OC handle being wounded? Are their wounds mostly physical? Mental? Emotional? What's the worst wound your OC has ever experienced?
Amelia's wounds are pretty much entirely emotional. her father got sent off to fight a war when she was 6, almost died, came back as an entirely different person when she was 8, partially vanished from her life when she was 18 and then up and fucking got murdered when she was barely 20. her mother retreated, cut off her only support system (amelia's biological father and her dad's best friend), and focused more on amelia's younger sister than on amelia herself because amelia was an adult (which is understandable, because alex was 11, but also amelia's a little fucked up about it) which is. all of that taken together is probably the worst wound she's ever experienced.
alone: How does your OC deal with loneliness? Have they ever been completely alone before? How do they act when there's no one around to see them?
Amelia has spent a lot of her life partially alone. She absolutely hates it. When she's not around anyone she gets very quiet, which she's not normally a loud person but she gets even quieter than normal. She also relaxes, a little bit, because she's not putting up the facade of being the normal, well adjusted, put together older sister without a death wish (Alex doesn't have a death wish either, but given what happened to her father she might as well have one. pissing off powerful/rich people & getting in major trouble about it is genetic, apparently! (joking) ).
#asks#ask game#oc not so nice ask game#zinabug#wip: herald at dawn#c: amelia gates#...i've just realized my cat and alex's sister have the same name#thats kinda funny honestly. this is about alex's sister though#not my cat#despite her many joys amelia my cat does not have a concept of being quiet#she's very Loud. but i love her!#amelia (not my cat) & alex are both so fucked up about their dad's death & the aftermath#but in very different ways#a lot of it has to do with how old they were when he died (11 vs 20) but its also other things#and i could go on about that for AGES but i don't think i have space in the tags to do that

wip game
Thank you @fakrichie and @erythriina for the tag! ^^
rules: make a new post with the names of all the files in your wip folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have wips.
I don't have very many at the moment, since i usually either write it all in one go as the idea comes or just write down the idea without getting back to it at all. One day, surely... Anyway! Here are the ones I actually have more senteces written for than just one:
The Dinnerrrrr [The Terror]
Jopson is T.I.R.E.D [The Terror]
Smaller Than Heaven [original work]
self-indulgent house fic [House MD] - which i will never post, probably. It's 3 years old and BAD
He's calling for Jop [The Terror]
@clandestinegardenias @theboarsbride @charlesdesvoeux @swanfloatieknight @cononeillbreastingboobily
out of the people i know that write things :DD
#ask game#tag game#im now finding out that i put jopson in ALL of my terror fics even when he's not in the direct first ship what's up with that#only exception is the mandatory nap time fic#me: i don't have favourite characters they're all my favourite#also me:#writes 11 terror fics out of which 11 include crozier and 10 incude jopson#btw crozier/jopson is in 8 of them#the mommy issues truly are invisible- yes.

what books would you recommend for an 8 years old girl? I have a little friend who is recovering from an accident
Ohhhh I'm so sorry!! I hope she's doing ok!
I LOVE rec'ing books to kids, but keep in mind I largely read fantasy and that tends to translate to my recs as well lol. (If this reader is into horse books, that's a whole other thing and I'll have to dig out my lists....)
General recommendations I've seen for kid lit is to find stories with protagonists a couple of years older than the reader, since kids (understandably) like to "read up".
My first rec is an eternal one, but with a couple of caveats:
The Underland Chronicles (five books) by Suzanne Collins. Technically the main character Gregor is 11 in the first book (and 13 by the end) but myself and my bestie agree he should have been aged up because he doesn't quite read like an 11-year-old; even a mature one.
The series also does get kind of dark and deals with war, trauma, and grief (it deals very well with all of them but there is loss in abundance). I think the payoff at the end is well-deserved, but it is hard-earned, and some kids aren't down for that.
If the reader in question is ok with a slightly thicker and slower book, I am legally obligated to rec The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I first read this book when I was eight or nine and it got me through the first major upheaval in my young life. I adore crabby, prickly, awkward, earnest Mistress Mary Lennox.
(There's a lot of classic fiction I could rec but it really depends on the reader, since reading styles have changed so much.)
(tucking the rest under a read-more for brevity's sake)
Some authors I love and trust are Patricia C. Wrede, Gail Carson Levine, Shannon Hale, Kate diCamillo, Diana Wynne Jones, Lloyd Alexander, and Jessica Day George. You have to pick and choose because they all write for a range of audiences, but their writing is solid across the board. Roald Dahl is solidly in the right age range, but I know people are hit-or-miss with him.
The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place by Maryrose Wood follows a slightly older protagonist in newly-minted governess Penelope Lumley, but it is definitely a MG story in theme, style, and in the other important members of the cast: the trio of feral children Penelope has been hired to civilize (and domesticate). Top of my list for "series to read to the niblings when they're old enough for sleepovers".
I recently read Quintessence by Jess Redman and was very impressed both with the story and the author. It's a contemporary story with a twist of magic to it. I'm keen to check out more of Redman's books in the future. I would say the same about Kelly Barnhill. I've only read The Girl Who Drank the Moon but I've heard good things about the rest of Barnhill's list.
A good while ago I started the Guardians of Childhood series by William Joyce ("The Rise of the Guardians" movie is very loosely based off of this series) and loved it. Unfortunately I never finished it.... Ain't that the way.
If your reader is ok with lots of drama and some frankly intense killing on occasion (detailed neck-snapping iirc), I had a few students who love the Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland. I...couldn't do it myself, but they swear it's a good series. (For some reason every time I see this series I think of the Warrior Cats.... Those were the days.)
One of my writing friends, Remi, is a lifelong fan of Bloomability by Sharon Creech. I found the audio version on Hoopla and absolutely adored it, and I understand Creech has plenty of other fantastic books in the same range and style. Remi also loves The Mysterious Benedict Society (I couldn't get into it but I see the appeal).
For more overtly Christian fiction, Narnia is obvious, but The Green Ember (S.D. Smith) and The Wingfeather Saga (Andrew Peterson) are a couple of more recent and very solid series. (I believe both are also available as audio on Hoopla.)
If we're looking for some graphic novels, I tried out the first book in the Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi and it was pretty solid. I haven't had a chance to try the rest of the series, but liked what I did see. There's also The Nameless City by Faith Erin Hicks. (Unfortunately I haven't explored a lot of middle grade graphic novels so I don't have a lot that I'm comfortable recommending.)
I want to say both The Spiderwick Chronicles and A Series of Unfortunate Events are in the right age range, or possibly just above it, but I can't remember and it's been way too long since I read (and enjoyed!) either of these series. Kind of on the same lines would be the Artemis Fowl series, which I personally hated if I'm honest, but others tell me it's solid.
I know I'm missing some obvious recommendations, but this is what I found after browsing a few shelves on StoryGraph. There are also several books/series friends here on tumblr have recommended that I have been meaning to get to. Hopefully soon.... Some of those are:
Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo (technically "The Children of the Red King" according to StoryGraph)
The Skyborn series by Jessica Khoury
Small Spaces by Katherine Arden (I've only read her YA/Adult fantasy and I love it but it's...definitely adult so I'm curious what her MG fiction is like)
The Mistmantle Chronicles by M.I. McAllister
Classic authors George MacDonald, E. Nesbit, and Maud Hart Lovelace
I hope this helps, and affords some decent distractions while your reader recovers. 💜
#I didn't really get into reading until I was 10 or 11 so like seven to nine is a hard age range for me to rec for#and I'm happy to rec 'older' books and series I love because I know kids will just read whatever looks cool#which I love! I very much did the same and generally had good results#book recs#I swear I had a tag for that...#asks#mine#man now I wanna read a mountain of middle grade books#I gotta improve my rec game#there are also a lot of series friends talk about reading as kids that I never heard of at that age#my knowledge of classic and enduring mg fiction is several lacking
