I’ve been waiting over a year to get some shots of the rare abs elusive kākā. Thanks to the natural, plant based, biodegradable and ethical poison 1080, I was treated to an early morning symphony of 6 boisterous and rare South Island kākā and 4 Tui playing and singing in the native forest on my way up to work in the back country of the West Coast. There are less that 10’000 of these birds left in both islands and 2 already extinct sub species on other islands.

Up in the North Island in Pureora Forest Park 20 kākā were radio-tracked in an area to be treated with aerial 1080 in 2001. In nearby Waimanoa Forest, which was not to be treated with 1080, nine Kākā were radio-tracked. In the area where 1080 was used, all 20 birds survived that season. Of the nine birds tagged in the untreated area, five were killed by predators that same season.

If we didn’t have the wonderful tool of 1080 to control the invasive mammalian plague we’d loose all the native birds and the native forest. 1080 has no impact on the environment, is the most studied poison ever, is natural and leaves no residue. #southislandkaka #kaka #southislandkākā #kākā #1080isgood #ban1080 #fuck1080 #1080 #battleforourbirds #nzbirds #parrotsofinstagram #parrots #lorosdeinstagram #loros #birdsofinstagram #birds #birdsong #nzforest #purenz #newzealand #southisland #westcoastnz #paparoanationalpark (at West Coast, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpBMStHDWbO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1owgofart7dit

New Zealand may not have the best looking birds but I think it does have some of the best sounding.
