Some images from my expeditions rafting the Amazon River. The expeditions to raft the Amazon river were a major chunk of my life and one of the biggest projects that I’ve undertaken. From sitting in a sweaty hostel and musing over the idea with a beer, while backpacking through Central America with @dom_stif in 2009, to actually seeing it through, took several years of research and planning. The 3 expeditions were eventually realised between 2011 and 2014. I began with little knowledge of the region and quickly realised I needed to learn 2 languages to accomplish it (Portuguese and Spanish). To learn these languages wasn’t an overnight task and I travelled to São Paulo to take language classes in 2010 with the aim to head into the Amazon the next year. By the time I headed off into the jungle I had attained and read a library of books on the region, almost everything published in English as well as a a good amount in Portuguese. We started in the white water of the rivers flowing out of the Andes mountains in Ecuador. Over days then weeks drifted down onto the wide flat water rivers of the jungle, setting up hammocks between the trees on the banks of the Rio Napo and camping over night. On one expedition we stopped in the Peruvian jungle city of Iquitos and acquired a wooden canoe. We outfitted it with a motor and thatch roof before heading off down the main branch of the Rio Solimões into Colombia and Brasil. On another we negotiated passage to a remote army outpost in Venezuela, made friends with the Commandante and his wife and they introduced us to an indigenous village where we bought a simple dugout canoe and wooden paddles.
