Hot Take: The Lion Turtle wasn't that out of left field.
Was it a deus ex machina? Yes. Technically. But it wasn't like some sudden dip in writing or like this was unprecedented and had no basis or reasoning in universe. Hear me out. This is Long.
Let's go back to book 1, specifically the book 1 finale. At what point prior to that are we told that there's a spirit that can turn into a giant koi monster and wipe out everyone? We didn't even know about the whole Tui and La thing until we are in the midst of the battle and there is no viable solution. Aang as he is, does not have the ability to solve this problem.
However, Aang is the avatar.
50% of that is having all four elements. It means mastering diciplines, practice, it's skill that you gradually improve on, it's being clever with the tools avalible to you.
But the other 50%, that I feel is too often forgotten, is spirithood, or being the bridge to the spirits. Spirits are not tools. They're explicitly shown to be things that just kinda Do Shit, and Are There. They don't care about the human world for humans' sake, that's the Avatar's job. The spirits are unexplainable. (I am ignoring Korra) Dealing with the spirits isn't something you can learn. There's not really a special technique Aang learns on How To Spirit 101.
But as the Avatar, Aang has the ability to comune with spirits, to seek them out, call to them, ask them for help, and give them help in return. Part of being the Avatar is doing things no one else can, and again, 50% of that comes from having four bending abilities, and the other 50% is his connection to spirits.
The Lion Turtle is the earned pay off of Aang's actions. Aang, like in the Northern Water Tribe, faces a problem in which neither he, nor anyone around him, knows what to do, and just like in the NWT at the twelfth hour, he turns to the spirits. He chooses to find a place where he feels connected, and calls out. He opens himself to a world outside of human control knowing that, as merely human, he is not capable.
It's the same set up.
Aang faces a problem: Giant Invasion/Having to defeat the fire lord
He does everything he physically can: Takes down a dozen ships/Masters three extra elements
But pulls back when he realizes continuing this way will destroy him: Retreats and admits hes in over his head/Refuses to commit violence with the intent to kill because that means sacrificing his values and the last remaining shreds of his people's values.
(PSA: Taking care of your mental/emotional health is just as important as taking care of your physical health)
He opens himself up to other people for solutions: Yue is just like 'you gotta dude :|'/His friends mock him
He chooses to turn to the spirits: Brings it up with Yue and Katara and Yue brings him to the spirit oasis/ Leaves the others to meditate
[Enter Magic Meditation Here]
He Goes To A Weird Spirit Place: Spirit World/Lion Turtle Forest
Fucks Around for a while as he tries to figure out wtf hes supposed to do: talks to spirits and Roku/talks to the avatars and momo (best place of advice obvs)
Finds the spirit he needs to help give him info: Koh+Ocean Spirit/Lion Turtle
Is granted sudden new powers that can solve his impossible situation: Giant Koi/ Energybending
Uses that shit
Saves the day
The end.
And I don't think this is really a cheat for him either. Aang still gives his everything to trying to fight those ships, even after seeing how many there are. He still has to go through all the hassle of the spirits fucking with him.
With the finale, he still admits to Momo that he may have to kill Ozai. He still accepts that, if literally no other solution is avalible, he'll do it even if it means sacrificing himself and his nation. He still has to do the battle to subdue Ozai and still has to risk being internally fucked by bad mojo from Ozai.
He still has to prove himself. In my opinion, he has to prove himself far more in the book three finale than book one. Book one he just kinda takes out some ships and then chats with some spirits and then the Ocean spirit does everything for him.
In the fight with Ozai, AANG had to learn all four elements, HE had to learn the avatar state (even if it conveniently got taken as soon as he did and then given back at dramatic moments), HE had to face Ozai even without the avatar state, HE still tried to reason with Ozai to the end, HE still used the avatar state (apon being gifted with a poke in the back) to fight back, HE still decided to not take the easy way out, HE still commited to and accomplished taking Ozai's bending.
He earned his use of the elements
He earned his use of the Avatar state (prior to lightning bc they couldn't have Aang be op too soon jebdjsbdn)
He continuously believed there has to be another way
He sought out solutions.
And he still had to get ragdolled some to top it off.
And as to the other Avatars' advice, and the idea that he was selfish.
He followed the wisdom of all the Avatars he spoke to.
He was decisive: "No, I'm not going to end like this."
Justice brought Peace: the firelord being rendered powerless and stuck to suffer jail the rest of his life weak and helpless is justice
He actively shaped his own Destiny: he decided how he was going to end things and shaped his destiny and the destiny of the whole world
"Selfless duty calles you to sacrifice your own spiritual needs and do whatever it takes to protect the world": to which Aang says "I guess I don't have a choice Momo, I have to kill the firelord."
The Lion Turtle did not come out of left field and Aang earned/deserved his ending.

Introduction to Tropical Marine Ecosystems
Below the ocean’s surface lies a breathtakingly beautiful world of unique biodiversity unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. As promised, our adventure kick-starts with start exploring the mesmerizing world of tropical marine ecosystems — discovering what’s so special about them, why they matter, and the amazing wildlife that creates this incredible environment.
Tumblr media
What Are Tropical Marine Ecosystems?
Tropical marine ecosystems (TMEs) harbour high levels of species richness across various habitat types including coral reefs, mangroves, sea-grasses and algae meadows (Hansen 2003). Collectively, they service the needs of billions of people worldwide, including but not limited to coastal defense, fishery provisioning, recreation and tourism as well as carbon sequestration (Moberg and Folke 1999; Barbier et al. 2011). Most people associate a tropical marine environment as having turquoise waters rich in various species of colorful fish, intricate corals, a wide variety of marine life.
Biodiversity is crucial for global ecology
Tropical marine ecosystems (TMEs) play an important role in global ecology for several reasons:
Biodiversity Hotspots: TMEs are highly biodiverse — among the most biodiverse on Earth. In total, it's believed that coral reefs harbour roughly 25% of all known marine species — even though they take up just under 1% of the seafloor (Coral Reef Alliance, n.d.)
Oxygen production: Photosynthetic organisms such as phytoplankton and seagrass provide the majority of the oxygen present on Earth in tropical waters, dubbing the ocean as the "lungs of the Earth." (Morsink 2017).
Carbon storage: As natural carbon sinks, coral reefs and mangroves help in mitigating the effects of climate change by capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO₂) in ecosystems (Alongi 2014).
Economic importance: These ecosystems support the lives of millions of people as a source of income from fishing, tourism, and provides coastal defense services, thus benefitting regional, national and world economies alike (Moberg and Folke 1999; Barbier et al. 2011).
Unique Features and Characteristics
Tropical marine ecosystems (TMEs) boast a range of unique features that set them apart from other marine environments:
Coral Reefs: The most recognized symbol, coral reefs are constructed from the bottom up by microscopic coral polyps over millennia. These creatures make complex and varied underwater scenes, commonly called “the rainforest of the sea” (Swart 2013).
Tumblr media
Mangroves: Mangroves are common along coast in tropical latitudes, providing important nurseries for fish and buffers against erosion and tropical storms (Koh et al. 2018).
Tumblr media
Seagrass Meadows: They are submerged grasslands that serve as habitats for marine creatures (Cullen-Unsworth et al. 2018). NGOs (nongovernmental organizations) have called on governments, companies and individuals to protect the world’s seagrass beds.
Tumblr media
Tropical Marine Biodiversity: Inside these areas lies an incredible variety of marine species from colorful fishes in the reefs and corals, to majestic sea turtles and gentle sharks.

This is the intro post
About me:
Shitty father of 90ish
Yes I do have a favorite son and he's dying
Yes I did buy a replacement
I have had succulents for: 3 months 👍
I am in fact addicted
I do NOT have a quarantine for new plants (no space)
As a beginner I freak out at everything
I don't have proper cutting shears, just an old pair of scissors from high school
My sins:
Had no grow light for a month leading to horrible etoliation in my first 20 plants
Put my jade in regular potting soil
Didn't mix inorganic grit into soil for potting for the first few weeks
Watered an overwatered plant, causing it to literally explode when I touched it
Bought 2 plants with spidermites and had them right next to old plants
Doused plants in isopropyl alcohol afterwards (did not get rid of the mites but didn't let them spread?)
Mistaked isopropyl alcohol stains as damage and wiped the farina off of one of my pvns
Sprayed straight 91% isopropyl alcohol on my plants after seeing mealybugs on 3. So many leaves were burnt
Did not rinse the alcohol off.
Mistaked the isopropyl alcohol burns as mealybug damage and sprayed again.
Still didn't rinse it off.
Mistaked the added burns as signs mealybugs were still there and shittily cut off the crowns and threw them away
Did not replace soil after dousing plants in isopropyl alcohol
Did not quarantine plants, causing mealybugs to show up on some of my props
Watered cuttings with no roots
Expected plants to be fine in 101°+ weather

Shibasaki Ko Birthday Party 2021 - Video from Fukuyama Masaharu
Shibasaki Ko-san, happy birthday! (Ko: immediate crying) This is + from KOH+, Fukuyama Masaharu. You're finally in your 40s! Well for me, I've been 40+ since very long ago. Now I'm in my 50s. (Ko: great) Many people think that time flies, and my 40s did pass in the blink of an eye.
When I was filming with Ko-chan again after so long, I realised that you haven't changed at all! I was surprised by how beautiful you are. You're just like old times, your skin is still so good, your hair as well, so shiny and fine. (Ko: stop saying this kind of stuff!) You're so pretty I can't walk properly seeing you. I hope that you can continue living healthily and energetically, all the way to your 50s.
(Masha checks his notes) The first time I worked with Shibasaki-san... (Ko: what what please don't say anymore weird stuff) was in October 2007, for Galileo. And thereafter there were more works in the Galileo series. Then in 2017, KOH+ reunited in the Kanpai Japan Live in Tokyo Dome. That was our first live, wasn't it? It's very touching. It was such a great performance. And now we're filming Silent Parade for next year. I have a lot more to say to you and to ask you.
It's been 14 years since the last time we did Suspect X until now, but I totally don't feel that so much time has passed. (Ko: not at all) I think that wherever Utsumi Kaoru is, Yukawa will be, because Yukawa is led forward by Kaoru. So this time, please continue to lead me forward. Thank you for taking care of Yukawa.
Now I should tell the fans things that they want to know about Ko-chan. (Ko: how is there so much for him to say?) I think that everyone knows... but when we were filming Silent Parade, I feel that she is so detail-oriented she gets nitpicky. hahahahhaha (Ko: what?? Masha thinks that??) In the scene at the family restaurant... you know how restaurants these days have iPads for ordering on each table, and the screen isn't fixed but rotates all the time? Every now and then, the AD or other staff would go and tap on the iPad, and Ko-chan would be so concerned about whether the screen is still the same as before for consistency's sake. She's the one who's most concerned about it, always swiping the screen going "pass, pass..." (Ko: gotta change the wrong screen) I mean, I think that I was nitpicky. I concern myself over a lot of things in life, so I'm the type of person that makes living tiring. But I guess Ko-chan also lives tiredly like me. (Ko: no not at all)
But precisely because of how she cares more than the average person, she treats everyone with kindness, whether it's people, the environment, animals, cooking ingredients, all the people and living things around her. She treats all of that kindly, but I just to tell her something, as a fellow person who's too stubborn over certain things: (Ko: yes?) I hope that while you treat other lives kindly, you can also be kinder to yourself. I think this is even more important, to understand that you first have to exist to be kind to the people and things other than yourself. So isn't it great to learn to love yourself more? (Ko: true)
Whoops, I talked a lot! Let's continue when we go back to filming. I truly believe that this will be a great work. Let's make it better than what we imagine it can be. Let's enjoy ourselves during filming until the end of the project. So finally, congratulations on turning 40. And finally, fans, please continue to take care of Shibasaki Ko. (Ko: dad~~~~) This is Fukuyama Masaharu. Congratulations.
Ko: Wait a minute, Masha said that much? But it's so great to hear from him. Host: Did you know this is edited? There's already so much after the editing. Now it's around five minutes, but actually he said many times more than that. Ko: What??? no... Host: Fukuyama Masaharu-san's love for Shibasaki Ko is never-ending. Ko: Like an elder brother who worries about me too much. But I'm so happy! I didn't think they'd appear (Masha and another guest before him) so that caught me off guard.

The third annual Asia North Exhibition and festival began on April 10 and will run until May 15 in socially distanced locations throughout Baltimore’s Charles North (Station North) and online in the form of virtual festival events. The event is co-presented by the Asian Arts and Culture Center (AA&CC) at Towson University (TU), Central Baltimore Partnership, and other community partners, a press release from the AA&CC says. It celebrates the art, culture and Asian heritage of Greater Baltimore, specifically the Korean history of Station North.
The exhibition will feature 25 regional Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) artists. Their artwork can be viewed in-person in Station North at Motor House, Joe Squared, SNF Parkway Theatre, North Avenue Market, Impact Hub and Maryland Institute College of Art’s (MICA) Fred Lazarous Center.
There are six different virtual events, including a collage-making workshop on April 17 with “Exploring Identity through Culture,” a virtual concert with Dong Xi on April 21, “Zinemaking 101” on April 30 and learning how to build stories in the workshop “Making Stories with Where We’re From” on May 7.
The “Virtual Kick-off Event” on April 10 featured a video tour of the exhibit as well as performances and presentations from some artists.
Nerissa Paglinauan, the curator for Asia North 2021 Exhibition and the AA&CC’s program manager, said that they had to plan around rising and falling COVID-19 cases with hybrid events.
“We had to be nimble about it and, again, kind of go with the flow,” said Paglinaun. “So with Central Baltimore Partnership, we decided to do kind of a hybrid of sorts, and create the physical installation. So along with that was also getting all those venues coordinated plus we still wanted, in the case that we definitely couldn’t have anything in person, we definitely wanted to have it online as well so it’s kind of like the work was doubled, making sure there was an online component.”
Paglinauan says she decided not to pre-determine a theme for the exhibition, instead preferring the artists to develop their own theme and messages, especially with the rising violence toward the Asian community.
“I don’t want to speak for the artists, I just want them to tell their own stories,” Paglinauan said. “It’s just feels really important now to be able to provide this platform for all these artists to share their different voices and perspectives and even just their reactions and how they’re responding to what’s going on. Now’s not the time to be quiet…you know, art has a way of empowering people who feel like they haven’t had a voice.”
Featured artist Jinyoung Koh, assistant professor of the Department of Art + Design, Art History and Art Education at TU, discussed how his recent experiences have impacted his artwork.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic and the time of hate, I continually asked myself, ‘Who am I?’ ‘What does this work say about me?’ ‘How do they see me?’ and ‘How do I see myself?’” Koh said. “I struggled to understand my socio-cultural identity and how it would influence my artistic process. The questions that constantly ran through my head needed to be expressed.”
According to Jing Ma, one of the 25 featured artists and former TU student, the exhibition also provides the featured artists with the ability to showcase their culture authentically.
“I would love to join [these] events because it’s a great opportunity to show Chinese culture,” Ma said.
Koh expressed his appreciation in being able to participate in this event and share his perspective.
“This opportunity means a lot to me as an contemporary artist from Asia to discuss how art relates to our own experience without stereotypes, and discover what’s new and compelling about art today for our valuable cross-cultural insights,” Koh said.
Sunjin Lee, a returning featured artist in the Asia North exhibition from last year’s virtual exhibition, discussed how art gives her the ability to be herself. “Ultimately, I enjoy creating paintings that have never existed in the world, and I am doing art because I can open up my own private space and express myself without restrictions,” Lee said.
Paglinaun wants viewers to open themselves up to the Asia North Exhibition and the experiences they encounter.
“Just experience it, that’s all,” said Paglinauan. “That’s all I want people to do, experience it at their comfort level and maybe climb outside their comfort level too, if they’re willing.”

Bio! Dad strange AU continued
Marinette grew up between Gotham and Paris—strange gets her every summer.
Zsasz has taken on babysitting duty with a strange glee that causes everyone to give him a few feet. Why?
Becuase a murder-happy mercenary is cooing over a tiny girl who’s response to ‘how ahould i take them out’ during a consultation was to tilt her head and say “why do that when you can make them your puppet? Find what they want, tease them with it and make it just yours to share if you want. If that doesnt work, break in and have poeple sleeping on the floor. No murder and new minion are much better, right uncle vic?”
Her other favorite babysitter is Jerome, aka the Joker, aka someone who should not be around tiny children unsupervised ever. Why? This conversation.
“Do you know how i got these?”
Tiny marinette squints, gasps, then says “you beat Koh the face stealer! How!”
Instead of correcting her, Jerome decided to tell her this. “I woke up, hunted him down and killed him for stealing my face.”
“Oh! Is that why he is t stealing faces anymore?”
Jerome rolls with it. “Yep.”
Marinette just smiles and asks about how to foght bad people since ‘maman says i need to be prepared. But she doesnt have time to teach me since she store’s busy.’
This lead to tiny little Marinette getting lessons from the goddamn joker and victor zsasz teaching her villany 101 disguised as needed Gothamite skills. Zsasz gets how to dislocate joints, hit properly, and how to break into anything with various odd ends, and how to ‘properly intimidate and threaten enemies without killing them’. Joker gets sneaking around, throwing knives, helps with her acrobatic instruction (she likes the flying bits, ok?), how to ‘inspire minions’ (she thinks he means start political movements) and how to know when the rules are not important anymore— “if they hurt you, hurt them back. They wont learn otherwise, took me forever to get that one right.” And “remember kiddo, its all about how you present yourself. Be what they cant stand when you cant stand them.” And “someone made those rules up. They could be made for very dumb reasons, like the no meta ones. Make those rules wish they were never born.”
Her favorite person is harley quinn. She wear her hair pig tails, can go on and on about her psychology research and work, thinks its fabulous. She’s part of the new Sirens dedicated to protecting victims of abuse, oh, and is a survivor of abuse from jerimah (yes, from gotham. Yes, he is Mr. J but everyone thinks he’s the joker and it pisses him off and he took it out on Harley when he was alive... he dies and revives a lot here.)
Poison Ivy’s cadmus clone, Rose, adopts Marinette. Rose loks about 10 when she meets toddler Marientte. Rose is only a few weeks old at the time, and was the practice for Superboy’s eventual cloning. She escaped by accident, ran into batman of all people, and was dumped onto a very cofused poison ivy in her green house. Little Marinette followed Rose around, gigled when the plants tossed her around and ended up with a cool plant mark that only appears in UV lighting. Rose is DoneTM woth the Justice League and Batman, often complaining to Marinette about things she notices—like her being given to a known criminal, confined to a greenhouse filled with deadly plants and unable to go to school due to the plants revolting if she tries to leave with Ivy.
Poison Ivy accepts that she is now a mother (has no idea how that happened. But then again, she did skip puberty so...) and takes having Marinette hang out as a little kid as another part of being a Mom.
Riddler and Ed Nygma are two separate personalities sharinga body. riddler is pacified from ciolence if Marinette or his son, code name Puzzler, can out riddle or maze or puzzle him. He is happy to teach them both about florensics, biology, engineering and how to make mazes and traps. He is the weird but fun uncle, who has the most effective grounding strategy—put you in a puzzle maze building. Ed is the parental one, who listens to their problems and suggests talking it out and not hitting the other person or manipulating them into revenge oswald. Ed takes the time to let the kids be kids and offers positive feedback, especially on their interests and both of their babble fits as ‘its good to see the real you without those silly little walls people keep insisting on’
Uncle penguin is a joke to little marinette. Who she keeps having to sneak out of arkham. Why? ‘Uncle penguin, you make bulls in china shops look like shadow assassins.’ She helps him becuase ‘he’s obviously dating uncle riddler, duh’ and uncle riddler and uncle ed are very nice to her and encourage her curiosity.
She hates Jerimah. Who hates her for liking Jerome.
She is terrifed of Tetch/Mad Hatter. She cant find words for it other than he feels wrong. Jerome has been quantined for beating the shit out of Tetch for getting to close to a leery Marinette and saying “she’d make a wonderful alice.”
Professor Strange is a good dad here, albeit a semi-villianous one. Mostly de-villianed. Mostly. He lets Marinette be her affectionate self, encourages her interests in everything and her love of just learning things, supplies her with her sticker treatment, and does his best to follow her love languages—touch and gift giving. He is the reason she so many things for fashion, he supplies the money for it (much to sabine’s shock the first time) and also choses to help fund and mentor the science-centered members of the RKC or Rouge Kids Club who do actively undermine the Rogues for big things like murder, joker gas, fear toxin, and have attacked medical conpanies for making bad products. He just, sometimes, sicks a Rogue on someone that tries to get his daughter’s identity. Ok?
Also for purposes of witness protection, Marinette is called “Jill” or “Jillian Smith” in Gotham.
The rogues kids or RKC call her safety net or nets. More on that later.

Popularity of K-pop fan culture activities
By Lau Zhi Xin
U1630093E
Introduction
In May 2018, hit K-pop boy group BTS took their first top spot on the Billboard 200 chart with their Love Yourself: Tear album. This is also the first time any K-pop album has clinched the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart. BTS albums have also continuously topped iTunes Top Album charts across different regions, with their latest album Map of Soul: Persona dominating the charts of at least 86 regions.
The success of BTS in international markets outside of South Korea has been described as “breaking through the glass ceiling of Asian pop in the United States”, and has earned BTS the title of “the biggest boy band in the world.” While BTS’ music and performances are key reasons to their popularity, it is undeniable that their fans and the Internet have a hand in propelling them to these successes.
K-pop fandoms have become such key contributors behind the success of K-pop idol groups that they can potentially determine whether K-pop groups or idols survive in the industry. Along with their K-pop idol groups, K-pop participatory fan culture is also gaining prominence worldwide, and it is thus crucial to examine the extent of their popularity.
Background
The idea of fandom was defined by Jenkins (2010) as a social structure and cultural practice conceived by engaged consumers of mass media properties, and “participatory culture” is explained as a method used by fans to claim their rights to participate in media culture by creating new works out of materials originally produced by the culture industry (Jenkins, 1992).
In the case of K-pop, Jung (2012) described participatory fan culture as an example that distinctively brings emphasis to the fan groups’ initiatives, as well as their active and collective involvement in online activities. Devoted fans often participate in various fan support activities to show their affection and support for their idols, as well as help to keep them in the news.
Participatory fan culture in South Korea is not something recent, but it rose to prominence only in the 1990s with the fans of popular K-pop groups such as Seo Taiji and the Boys, H.O.T and Sechkies, also known among K-pop fandoms as the first generation K-pop idols. Participatory fan culture has also evolved with each generation of K-pop idols and has taken many forms across the years – coloured raincoats, balloons and fan chants in the 1990s, lightsticks, fan banners and mass dances in 2000s, fan support events and projects of the 2010s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Popularity spanning across different types of activities
While traditional participatory fan culture remains relevant in K-pop today, it has gained such immense popularity that products of today’s participatory fan culture have taken on many new forms including fan slogans, cup sleeve events, subway station advertisements and involvement in good causes in the name of their K-pop idols. These fan support activities vary in terms of number of fans involved and engaged, as well as the amount of money spent.
Fan slogans
Fans slogans can be viewed as an evolution of fan banners used to cheer for K-pop idols at concerts and weekly recordings. Fans are involved in the entire creative and sale process, from taking photos of their K-pop idols, to designing fan slogans and selling them to other fans. Fan slogans are sold to fans in South Korea as well as across the globe with the help of other fans acting as group order managers (GOM) who will coordinate the sale and order in their respective countries. Fan slogans offer a more individualised option than traditional fan banners to a small extent, as there are many varied designs of slogans that fans can purchase, depending on what they like.
Tumblr media
Cup sleeve events
Fan support in the form of cup sleeves is a relatively new addition to this participatory fan culture as it only started to grow alongside the strong and still expanding café culture in South Korea. As with most products of participatory fan culture, cup sleeves and cup sleeve events are designed and organised entirely by K-pop fans themselves. Cup sleeve events are typically held at cafes to celebrate an idol’s birthday, anniversary or achievements. With the café decked in merchandises and posters of a K-pop group, fans can collect specially designed cup sleeves with a purchase made from the café. Such events often see a high turnup as they also act as a venue for fans to gather and get to know the community, as well as sell or trade their own merchandise
Tumblr media
Subway station advertisements
Besides the typical advertisments for brands and organisations, subway stations in South Korea also frequently feature fan support advertisements for K-pop idols. These are typically put up to celebrate an idol’s birthday, anniversary or achievements as well. Collectively, fans will raise funds to buy advertisement spots at different subway stations. Such subway advertisements contributes to K-pop idol’s popularity and are effective methods to show fans’ support. In 2018, NU’EST’s JR showed his appreciation to L.O.Λ.Es for the love that he has received by going around subway stations in Seoul displaying his birthday advertisements to greet fans, and repeated this once again in 2019. Trainees who appeared on the recent Produce X 101 were also gifted with their own subway advertisements by their fans even though they have yet to officially make their debut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Involvement in philanthropy work in the name of their idols
Perhaps the best outcome of participatory fan culture is fans’ involvement in good social causes in the name of their idols. Ever since 2007 when fans of Shinhwa’s Shin Hye-sung donated “fan rice” to celebrate his first solo concert, this charity trend has now become widely popular and common. These are carried out to celebrate idols’ birthdays, anniversaries and achievements, but they also serve to make K-pop idols look better to the public and create a better reputation of the fandom itself.
Popularity in terms of scale of projects
Fandoms and individual fans have to pay for such fan projects, usually through donation drives carried out among the fandom or from their own pockets. A whole-page coloured advertisement in a daily newspaper in 2014 cost about ₩10 million and a subway advertisement can cost between  ₩1.5 million and  ₩4.5 million, depending on its location. According to Seoul Metro, there were 1,576 subway advertisements dedicated to K-pop idols, a sharp increase from the 76 in 2014.
K-pop fandoms, similar to K-pop itself, thrives on competition. Such activities of participatory fan culture only continue to expand in scale and popularity, as it is often seen as a competition between and even within fandoms. Subway station advertisements dedicated to K-pop idols have already taken step further to include an entire cabin in subway trains itself. In August 2019, fans of BTS, also known as ARMY, decked out subway trains in Seoul to celebrate Jungkook’s 23rd birthday. In honor of RM’s birthday, ARMYs also donated a total of ₩1.994 million to build a forest of 1,250 spirea prunifolia in the Jamsil Hangang Park.
Tumblr media
Popularity on an international scale
K-pop participatory fan culture is not limited to South Korea alone and has spread across the globe. International K-pop fandoms often replicate these activities of participatory fan culture in their home country, or they may change it to be relevant to their location. In order to match the donation made by Korean ARMYs to build a forest in honor of RM’s birthday, international ARMYs also made a donation of ₩9.12 million to build a second forest. In Singapore, subway advertisement for BTS was put up by local ARMYs in June 2019 at Dhoby Ghaut MRT station to celebrate BTS’ 6th anniversary. This was the first of its kind in Singapore, but is unlikely to be the last.
K-pop fans have also managed to put up advertisements on Times Square ads promoting their K-pop idols, and according to Branded Cities Network who have worked on multiple K-pop advertisement campaigns in Times Square, these are usually sponsored by fans in China, which further highlights the international popularity of such activities. K-pop idols who have been featured on Times Square advertisement spaces include EXO, BTS, Wanna One’s Kang Daniel and NCT’s Taeyong.
Tumblr media
Instead of donating rice or planting forests that are now common charity trends by fandoms in South Korea, French ARMYs have recently organised a litter picking activity. This was in part an effort to counter the bad press that Korean ARMYs received for littering outside cafes after celebrating Jungkook’s birthday. French ARMYs picked up cigarette butts littered on the streets in France and stored them in plastic bottles.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
As the popularity of K-pop continues to grow across the globe, we cannot say for sure when the craze will burn out. However, it is clear that the popularity of K-pop fan culture has also grown tremendously with the idols. In terms of variety and number of activities, financial scale and manpower involved, as well as countries and regions which they take place in, activities of K-pop fan participatory culture are likely to continue to grow and fandoms compete to outshine one another.

Important: How to Use Antimicrobial Herbs to Heal Your Gut
Antimicrobial herbs are the top natural treatment for gut issues, like SIBO, dysbiosis, parasites and yeast overgrowth.
Here’s all you need to know and how to use them.
Antimicrobial Herbs 101
Herbal therapies have been used for centuries as the preferred “drugs” of choice for addressing illness—from stomach aches, viruses, colds and flu’s.
Long before researchers mentioned the words “gut microbiome,” people knew there was powerful healing in nature’s medicine for reversing disease.
Types of Antimicrobial Herbs
Some of these powerful herbal agents include:
Peppermint
Berberine
Garlic (Alicin)
Olive Leaf
Oregano Oil
Grapefruit Seed Extract
Pau d’arco
Black Walnut
Resveratrol
Licorice
Echinacea
Goldenseal
Oregon grape
Barberry
Wormwood
Thyme
Stinging Nettle
Uva Ursi
Yerba Mansa
Caprylic Acid
Cat’s Claw
Manuka honey
Tea tree oil
Curcumin
Clove
Cinnamon
Astragalus Root
Colloidal silver
“Antimicrobial” protocols—herbal therapies—are often part of a “healing” gut protocol if dysbiosis (too much or too little gut bacteria), SIBO, fungal or yeast overgrowth, parasites or gut infections are identified as a “root cause” behind poor health.  Treatment of these  “gut issues” typically a two-stage treatment approach:
Eradicate or reduce pathological organisms
Restore a healthy gut microbiome
In most cases of dysbiosis, except for significant fungal overgrowth, a short period of antimicrobials (30-60 days) commences, followed by a more significant focus on restoring the healthy gut microbiome.
Generally speaking, a blend of botanical herbs in supplement form is recommended for most cases of dysbiosis for a “broad spectrum” approach to healing. However, depending on the certain pathogenic organisms identified on a stool or SIBO breath test, some people find treating specific organisms with research-backed specific agents may be effective (such as grapefruit seed extract for the overgrowth pseudomonas aeruginosa).
Lastly, given the fact that antimicrobial herbs can be powerful, is also recommended you combine antimicrobial treatment with adjunct supports to aid in both complete eradication/reduction of pathogenic organisms, as well as the preservation of any healthy bacteria you do have. Support agents for an antimicrobial protocol include:
Antimicrobial Treatment: Support Agents
Quality probiotic & symbiotic (a probiotic + prebiotic).
To maintain a healthy gut microbiome as some bacteria die off. (Ideally taken away from antimicrobial herbs; particularly a soil-based bacteria). Medium-chain fatty acids extracted from coconut oil that are antiparasitic in addition to being antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial. Great for boosting immunity and warding off yeast.
Biofilm Disruptor.
Pathogenic bacteria can form biofilm around their outer layer—sort of like “steel armor” for preventing destruction. Biofilm may be one of the primary drivers of resistance and treatment failure in multiple disease, antimicrobial and/or antibiotic treatments. Biofilm disruptors help break up biofilm to allow your other antimicrobial agents to work. (ex. NAC, Cranberry, Biocidin, Colloidal silver, Xylitol, Manuka honey, Interfase Plus)
Least Restrictive “Real Food” Diet.
Many people go on an “anti-candida,” ketogenic or “no carb” diet while “healing their gut.” However, these can be counterproductive to resetting your gut microbiome, given the fact that some starchy plants and pre-biotics are needed to feed healthy gut bacteria and bring pathogenic bacteria “out to play.” Prebiotics found in starchy plants and veggies help your antimicrobials work even better (so there is bacteria for them to target). Aim for 1 to 2 servings per day of starchy plants and/or prebiotic fibers while on an antimicrobial herbs protocol.
“But isn’t medicine more powerful?”
Herbal therapies are at least as effective as rifaximin—the typical conventional antibiotic treatment for resolution of gut dysbiosis (i.e. SIBO, candida, parasites and IBS)—if not more. In one study, 104 patients diagnosed with SIBO with the lactulose breath test were treated either with Rifaximin (1,200 mg) or a cocktail of herbal antimicrobials (see below) for 4 weeks before repeating the lactulose breath test.
The study showed that 46% of the patients treated with herbal antimicrobials were successfully treated while only 34% were free of SIBO after taking Rifaximin (1).

Antimicrobial Protocol Treatment Timeline
Dysbiosis-Pathogenic (high amount of pathogenic and/or commensals bacteria): 60 Days
Dysbiosis-Healthy Overgrowth (high amount of “beneficial” bacteria on stool test and possibly yeast markers): 30 Days
Insufficiency Dysbiosis (lack of healthy bacteria with a few pathogenic bacteria): 30 Days, followed by emphasis on Probiotics & Prebiotics
Parasites: 60 Days
SIBO: Low/Mild: 30 Days, Moderate: 60 Days, High: 90 Days
Beware: Herx (“Healing”) Reactions May Happen
A die-off reaction, also called a Herxheimer reaction or “Herx reaction”, can occur whenever you first start a new supplement or antimicrobial protocol—often a sign of a “detox” or die off of certain bacteria.
Typically, Herx symptoms develop within a couple of hours to several days after treatment and last anywhere from a few days to several weeks or months—depending on the severity of the underlying pathology you are treating. However, depending on the location of the bacteria, symptoms may develop later. The Herxheimer reaction is especially seen during antimicrobial treatments (gut healing protocol) because antimicrobials destroy numerous microorganisms and bacteria.
Although the Herxheimer reaction is typically not harmful, it does frequently cause temporary pain, discomfort, and worsening of symptoms. Symptom severity is often indicative of the level of inflammation triggered by the immune system.
Common symptoms that may develop or worsen due to a Herxheimer response include:
Bloating
Brain Fog
Chills
Cold Sweats
Constipation
Cramps
Diarrhea
Fatigue
Fever
Headaches
Irritability
Joint Pain
Lethargy
Muscle Pain
Nausea
Skin Irritation
Sore Throat
Because of the sudden worsening of symptoms, it is common for patients to feel that the severity of their condition has increased due to the treatment. However, even though treatment causes a temporary increase in symptom intensity due to greater release of toxins the condition ultimately improves. The body responding in this way usually means that the treatment is actually working effectively.
Nevertheless, even though a Herxheimer reaction indicates that treatment is working effectively, it doesn’t make the patient’s condition any more comfortable in the immediate.
Fortunately, there are several ways of limiting the symptoms of a Herxheimer reaction without inhibiting treatment efficacy. The following suggestions can and should be used when detoxing, using antibiotics, or being treated for infections and other forms of chronic disease to limit Herxheimer intensity, including:
How to Deal with HERX Reactions
Drink H20. Drink plenty of fluids to aid in the removal of toxins and help cleanse the GI tract.
Get Your Zzzz’s. The body conducts many restorative processes while at rest that it cannot accomplish when it is awake. When experiencing a Herxheimer reaction due to greater toxicity, it is best to allow more time for quality sleep.
Sweat. Sweat it out with heated yoga, sauna and daily movement—a natural essential for detoxification.
Try Dry Brushing & Rebounding. Two lymphatic “cleansing” tactics to help flush the lymphatic track.

Judaism 101: Expressions & Greetings
What is the proper Jewish thing to say when someone tells you she's pregnant? How do you wish someone a happy holiday in Hebrew? Here are some common Jewish expressions and greetings.
Shabbat-related greetings
Shabbat Shalom (shah-BAHT shah-LOHM)
Hebrew. Literally, Sabbath peace or peaceful Sabbath. This is an appropriate greeting at any time on Shabbat, although it is most commonly used at the end of a shabbat service.
Gut Shabbes (GUT SHAH-biss; gut rhymes with put)
Yiddish. Literally, good Shabbat. Like Shabbat shalom, this is a general, all-purpose Shabbat greeting. Gut Shabbes is more likely to be used in general conversation or when greeting people, while Shabbat shalom is more commonly used at the conclusion of a service.
Shavua Tov (shah-VOO-ah TOHV)
Hebrew. Literally, good week. This greeting is used after Havdalah (the ceremony marking the conclusion of Shabbat), to wish someone a good forthcoming week.
Holiday Greetings
Chag Sameach (KHAHG sah-MEHY-ahkh)
Hebrew. Literally, joyous festival. This is an appropriate greeting for just about any holiday, but it's especially appropriate for Sukkot, Shavu'ot and Pesah (Passover), which are technically the only festivals (the other holidays are holidays, not festivals).
Gut Yontiff (GUT YAHN-tiff; gut rhymes with put)
Yiddish. Literally, good holiday. This greeting can be used for any holiday, not necessarily a festival.
L'Shanah Tovah (li-SHAH-nuh TOH-vuh; li-shah-NAH toh-VAH)
Hebrew. Lit. for a good year. A common greeting during Rosh Hashanah and Days of Awe. It is an abbreviation of L'shanah tovah tikatev v'taihatem (May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year). The second pronunciation above is the proper Hebrew pronunciation, but I more commonly hear the first pronunciation, which is Yiddish style.
Have an easy fast
This is the proper way to wish someone well for Yom Kippur. Please, don't wish people a Happy Yom Kippur; it's not a happy holiday.
Other Expressions
Shalom (shah-LOHM)
Hebrew. Literally, peace. A way of saying "hello" or "goodbye."
Shalom Aleikhem (shah-LOHM ah-ley-KHEM) or Sholem Aleikhem (SHOH-lehm ah-LEH-khem)
Hebrew and Yiddish. Peace upon you. A traditional greeting. The second version (the Yiddish version) is more common, at least in America. It is related to the common Arabic greeting, salaam alaikum (not surprising, because Hebrew and Arabic are in the same family of languages). The traditional response to the greeting is Aleikhem Shalom (and upon you, peace).
Mazel Tov (MAH-zl TAWV)
Yiddish/Hebrew. Literally, good luck. This is the traditional way of expressing congratulations. "Mazel tov!" is the correct and traditional response upon hearing that a person has gotten engaged or married, has had a child, or has become a bar mitzvah. It can be used to congratulate someone for getting a new job, graduating from college, or any other happy event. Note that this term is not used in the way that the expression "good luck" is used in English; that is, it should not be used to wish someone luck in the future. Rather, it is an expression of pleasure at the good luck someone has already had.
Yasher koach (YAH-shehyr KOH-ahkh)
Hebrew. Literally, straight strength. Figuratively, may you have strength, or may your strength be increased. A way of congratulating someone for performing a mitzvah or other good deed. In essence, you are wishing this person the strength to continue doing this good thing, and you are also recognizing the effort that the person put into doing this good thing. It is most commonly used in synagogue, to congratulate someone after he or she has participated in some aspect of the service. Strictly speaking, this is a masculine form. Some people use the feminine form when expressing the same sentiment for a woman, but that is unusual.
L'Chayim (li-KHAY-eem)
Yiddish/Hebrew. Literally, to life. The toast you offer before drinking wine or other alcoholic beverages, used the way you would use "Cheers!" in English.
Gesundheit (g'-SUND-hahyt)
Yiddish. Literally, health. This is the normal response when somebody sneezes. The same expression is used in German (Yiddish is largely based on German), and is quite common even among non-Jews, but it was worth pointing out because some non-Jews have said they were afraid of offending by saying "bless you" to a Jew.
