It's been fun, we had a good run. But they're definitely gonna be doing something about wolves in the Netherlands now.

In the past two weeks a dog and a child have (allegedly) been attacked by the same territorial pack. Nothing's been 100% proven yet but things aren't looking good for the wolves.

Wolves are protected in the NL but "problem wolves" such as this pack are allowed to have measures taken against them, whatever that may entail.

The pack in question has pups which is why they're so fiercely protective atm. It sucks big time for the child and dog who were attacked dgmw but in the end just waltzing into a wild animal's territory especially when they have pups is ill-advised.

I understand if measures will be taken against the pack. It makes me sad (in the end they're just parents protecting their offspring) but I also get that in a very densely populated country like the NL aggressive wolves are an issue we can't just ignore.

I do hope the wolves won't be killed and another measure will be taken but honestly I don't know what'll happen. Time will tell I guess.

Imagine the agony: There is not just that one event but a few. And they meet again and again. But Shad stays masked. Because she is Sharran after all. But she indulges for a while in that young noble girl that makes her feel...normal and free. Something of her own. So she keeps on volunteering for the Noble/Patriar festivities.

Viconia doesn't think any of it at first as Shad seems to be eagerly training in the subterfuge and deception that happens at these grand ball kind of things. But eventually she gets suspicious and sends another Sharran out, without Shad knowing. So they find out. And then she gets punished for it.

They can't make Shad crush/kill one of the daughters of the noble houses, even if it is a lesser one. But they can put her in agony another way: Use Tav for information gain and make her embrace loss when Shad eventually reveals all or make sure Shad chooses the mirror.

Oh the angst...the hurt. Either way: Serena has to embrace loss because at some point Shad stops showing up to these events...

🥺 oh my GOD not them having a forbidden little “almost-relationship” at these gatherings. Serena getting so attached to her and waiting for her- Shadowheart always keeping her at a safe distance, at first- but slowly her resolve melts away.

Shadowheart is disillusioned by sex and courting with most of the people in the cloister- it’s physical, not emotional. I think Serena’s genuine innocence and desire to truly know her would be so refreshing. She’s different than a lot of the nobles around them, so far up their own asses, they can’t seem genuine to save their own lives.

Think of all the adorable possibilities… a soft kiss to the back of a hand after a dance, stealing a drink or two, Sneaking off to the gardens for a rushed moment to kiss, Serena sneaking gifts for Shadowheart (that she can’t take to the cloister so she keeps them stashed somewhere in the city), joking about smut novels that Wyll has recommended….they get to just be young, together. Innocent and in love.

Serena probably confides in her one evening. Who knows, maybe Shadowheart even gets it in her head that she can help Serena run away??? Serena’s father may not be a direct target for assassination (assuming he’s too important or his death would be too high profile by Sharran standards), but she could intervene, somehow. Protect her.

Whatever the case, Viconia and Shar step in, and her memory is wiped.

Serena would be HEARTBROKEN to learn she was just abandoned, like that. She would go every time, hoping to see her again- but she realizes the pretty half-elf (whose name she might not even know???) is gone. And so is her chance at happiness in Baldur’s Gate.

While Shadowheart might not remember, it would be sweet if Serena did, the first time they kiss again, a decade or so later, after saving the Grove. She remembers that feeling, and realizes they’ve been entwined for so much longer than she’s realized.

so anki is the love of my life, and i'd like to discuss it re language learning.

spaced repetition systems in general

SRSs are helpful tools to prevent memory loss for specific facts. there's some criticism behind the specifics, but it's pretty safe to say that it's good to have a huge flashcard deck with relevant flashcards where you review the new-to-you stuff with relative immediacy and your already-reviewed stuff with relative distance.

flashcard model recommendations

go for a monolingual deck!!! if you absolutely can't, edit the flashcard to monolingual after you're vaguely familiar with the word!!! (i use wordreference - it's good but imperfect)

edited to add - a TL/NL vocab deck can be very efficient if languages are from the same family

i use a picture for the front unless the vocab word is too high concept, and using a picture would just be misleading/ineffectual.

i use soundclips about half the time - i pull clips from wiktionary, forvo, & the collins dictionary.

i use the fill-in-the-blank feature (cloze) pretty heavily with antonyms, and if i'm trying to remember specific usages of common words/phrases

i also use the fill-in-the-blank feature for chunking, altho i use this fairly rarely

i recommend 25 new words daily, or anything that'll set you for your regular pomodoro time for studying vocab (which is 25 mins for me).

i'm not at an advanced level yet for language learning, but this format is recommended for higher levels!

i lowkey recommend including example sentences on the backside, re chunking, but the utility really can depend on the vocab word

limitations

some limitations are a bit obvious - the quality of your study is 100% down to the quality of the flashcard (e.g. accuracy, relevancy, does it need more explanation for you to understand it)

it's also a hell of a time-suck to create these decks. i study 25 new cards a day, which means i have to create about two hundred flashcards every week. i make this quicker by having an ongoing list of words to add to my deck, instead of trying to look up vocab lists or whatever in the moment. i also do the whole week at once because i do get into the rhythm of dictionary-picture-audio searching while watching tv or whatever.

there are some fun add-ons (like for deadlines), and some complicated customization within anki itself. i usually just google if i have a question - a ton of people use anki, so there are tutorials for almost anything you want to do.

fluent forever

if you're unfamiliar, the fluent forever guy wrote a book about language learning which really hinges on a specific model of flashcard. he has tons of tutorial videos on his website, but basically he incorporates the phonetic alphabet, Google Images, and other relevant info for a vocab word (and grammar) in a flash card.

i think his flashcards take an unrealistic/unproductive amount of time, with a bunch of useless filler. however, i do recommend doing a quick read-through of his model and reasoning, as he might speak to something that you're struggling with. (for example, i've never struggled significantly with pronunciation so i think the IPA stuff is 100% useless.)

here's an integration to create the fluent forever flashcards much much faster. i don't use it but i've seen it recommended before.

outside of language learning!

i've used anki to learn for my work certification, for english vocab words from books i'm reading, and for titles of paintings that i want to remember forever. i wouldn't recommend shared decks for language learning, but i emphatically recommend them for other subjects!

Least favorite adaptation

So the 2004 Uli Edel movie is definitely somewhere up there. It has enjoyable elements – for example, Julian Sands as Hagen looks really attractive 🤭 – but the sudden Wagner ending with Hagen killing Gunther (because of the ring) gave me so much whiplash the first time I watched it xD Other elements like Siegfried getting amnesia as a child are also not my cup of tea.

Besides that, I’m not a big fan of Wolgang Hohlbein’s novel ‘Hagen von Tronje’. His interpretation of Hagen is too much of a modern ‘good guy’, who wallows too much in self-pity, and lacks the characteristics I enjoy about NL!Hagen so much like his ruthlessness.

I also remember reading a novel as a teenager, in which Hagen feeds squirrels (!?) and gains their trust (as part of his plan) to showcase Kriemhild and Siegfried how good he is with animals and how trustworthy he is. Successfully. It might have been Sabine Trooger’s novel ‘Kriemhild: Königin der Nibelungen’, but I’m not 100% sure, since I remember almost nothing from that book. I think Hagen also drowned in the Rhine in that book... not sure.

I do remember owning Hohlbein’s and Trooger’s books at some point, but I didn't like them enough to keep them. There are safe several adaptions out there which are worse than the ones I mentioned, but I haven't read them.
