Hi, yes hello. Good day all my gender and none gender darlings <3 This is gonna be a long winded salt post about the current state of mlb and the fandom and if that’s not for you feel free to skip this post as you please dear. I want your comfort as a priority and you do you. And for people who disagree with me I’ll kindly ask you not to engage on this post please keep scrolling and don’t let me have any bearings on your day. I will not interact to dispute this post cause I’m kinda tired of stuff if that’s alright with you. Love you. OKAY. *breaths* As someone who when it comes to Miraculous Ladybug fanfiction only goes into the Adrienette tag and never got the urge to see other ships in fics ever since the start of this show till now, I can safely say that I am indeed an Adrienette shipper.... yah know EXCEPT FOR CURRENT CANON. Because, this may shock everyone who likes this ship, the relationship they have in fanfiction and canon is not the same thing anymore. This series canon writing has been atrocious since the start of S3 (if not the middle of S2 where I could notice things were in the start of going in a weird /later confirmed bad/ direction)

So this is just a thing I wanted to say, hey like could y'all kindly not deliberately go into tags of your notp’s and harass shippers in their own tags/blogs? Cause that’s like, not raaad my dude. \(uwu)/ And tag stuff accordingly if you disagree? Please and thank you for being an amazing human being? And be polite if you wanna debate them? And if your not sure the poster is open to it please first ask/check with them for consent for that debate? :3c

Also can we like not dismiss someone’s extremely valid points and logical points that they wrote/pointed out as flaws and/or good points and well written parts just because *le gasp* they ship Adrienette or Lukanette and/or Adrigami instead of what you ship or is endgame in canon! Blasphemy!

Okay now for the serious note, Marinette is always punished for shit she didn’t do to the point her embarrassment and distress in Truth made me cry and have an attack that later made me finally quit the show. (if you want to see that distress post it’s here) One of my bff’s who writes Adrienette fics on AO3 also hates the writing and destruction of characters in this entire show at this point and agrees that the writing for the characters has been shit, Marinette is both a great person and then suddenly a freak for plot reasons, Adrien is a saint except he literally is not and him not learning lessons is the worst representation and image for young boys ever, every single character has been distorted to fit plot instead of providing it, but they keep watching for lore for their fic and have been explaining to me what happened since then. So yes I know about Lies through them and osmosis of bloggers I follow. And some of them holy molly are Lukanette or Adrigami and even Marigami blogs because that doesn’t matter to me one fucking bit because they’re freakin’ darlings of people who tag stuff properly and aren’t rude to others or have ever been rude to me and the points they make are valid. Just as I also follow a lot of dedicated Adrienette only blogs and in fact what all of these have in common is that when I interact with them or ask stuff they all have been nothing but fluffy bunnies I wanna kidnap into my home.

Just as some other people have also pointed all these things out even tho they are also Adrienette shippers.

MY POINT IS *deep breaths* someone being a Lukanette shipper saying that Truth is a bad episode and presenting reasons outside their ship for it is valid. An Adrigami shipper pointing out that Lies is badly written and posting logical points that have nothing to do with the ship is valid.

You know what’s not valid?

Dismissing someone’s argument cause you went into their blog and noticed they shipped a certain ship even tho their debate/post had no ships involved as points of argument to begin with and then decided to harass/dismiss them and their post directly at them.

Guys we need to be kinder to each other. We need to respect each other. We need to understand that some people only like the shipping in a show. Some people only like to discuss writing of shows. Some people like to salt, others not at all. Some post things as an outlet not wanting different interaction/debate, others do want people to discuss and debate. ALL OF THIS IS GREAT AND FINE. BUT WE NEED TO RESPECT AND BE KIND TO EACH OTHER.

I have not been a perfect example of this and I am a mature person who can admit this. So if I unintentionally did this to you? I’m sorry. I will hear the person speaking to me and check myself and correct my behavior for next time. And so can you because I believe you are a good person.

I had proof of this very recently where me and someone else had a misunderstanding within a post and we ended up talking and we cleared up stuff. Turns out that person did not want to make me feel bad at all. We just had a case of me being a none English speaker and not being able to make my entire point super cohesive and them getting a wrong idea and it snowballing from there.

Which is also something I wanna point out. Please don’t forget that some people aren’t native English speakers and may not be able to explain themselves fully to you or cohesive enough. Be patient and before you think they are debating something without pointing out this thing or x forgot to point out something in their post ask them about it politely if they have an opinion on it or if maybe they forgot to mention? Jesus where am I going with this post at this point. Okay what I want everyone to take away from this is that we shouldn’t be fighting each other. We shouldn’t be dismissing and harassing each other. You know what we should be doing? Beating up Thomas Austruc and his writing team with sticks and DEMANDING BETTER WRITING FOR THIS SHOW AND ALL OUR SHIPS BE THEY CANON OR NOT ALL OF US TOGETHER---- Okay pitch fork revolution idea aside I just wanted to stop people from using a ship as a means to hurt each other. We all liked or still like MLB and I want us to be above this stuff. I believe in us cause I’m a stupid shounen protag whose hopes die last when it comes to people. I love you all okay? I seriously do. I’ve had a lot of fun when it comes to the fandom of MLB. I love seeing people post cute art of my ship. I love seeing cute art of Lukanette, I love seeing cute art of Adrigami and Nino and Alya, and Nino or Adrien and JuleRose. I love the gifs, the salt, the cute content, the mostly lore debated stuff etc. I LOVE IT ALL. And I’m not giving up on us. How do you react to readers predicting your plot twists?

Depends when they do. A page or two before it happens? Both of us get to feel clever. Yay! Months ahead? Well, obviously the thing I thought a a big twist ain't it, so I get to decide what other thing to focus on. I usually don't change the plot on reader predictions, but I can always change how a twist is presented from "Big surprise! Bet you didn't expect that" to "Well, ain't it neat to FINALLY have confirmation about that thing?"

Funnily, the best plottwist I ever wrote was in my now defunct comic. I thought it was obvious, but my few readers went "WOAH, didn't see THAT coming." So these days I try to just write the story and let the twists fall where they may.

ASDFPHIaewpf a friend of mine was reading my comic and he was making a lot of theories, a bunch of them was way off but he managed to be 100% accurate about one of his theories and I just started laughing nervously when he talked to me about it before it happened in the comic. This was years ago and the thing already happened and it's not a big deal anymore, but at the time I felt proud to write something that was obscure enough to not be on the reader's face but at the same time having someone figure it out after connecting the dots

I have little twists that happen in a more funny way, and it's usually used for comedy, and my readers seem to like it

but that's probably because of the expectations in humor coming from my writing style

which is usually bad puns and character reactions to absurd situations

and I agree witch chalcara, sometimes we can feel like we failed a plot twist when people see it from miles away

which is true, but sometimes even when they figure it out it's best to leave it as it is

I've seen a lot of writers fucking up their stories by changing plot twists that were stablished just because "people found out too early", and retconing a lot of the story in result

like, making a plot twist consists in creating some kind of foreshadowing

to make the twist not seem too forced and taken from nowhere

also to make it rewarding for those who searched deep for those clues

idk I love these little foreshadowing/clues we can leave for our readers

to make the twists even more powerful and meaningful

I want to second a lot of the above. A plot twist should not be completely unguessable. Because if nobody guesses it, it means to most readers it's gonna feel like it makes no sense and came out of nowhere. The goal of a true twist is to have as few people as possible guess it but then when it's revealed, the reader smacks their head going "how could I miss all these clues."

Readers predicting things usually makes me lead with "oh no, I'm predictable!!!" And then makes me thing "wait, no, it means they're picking up on the hints I've left behind." Though sometimes it's predictable, like if someone guesses the actions of the next few pages, that's less of the readers picking up on hints and more just guessing right. But guessing big plot things, j think, is a reflection that I'm making things as clear as I need to, and I'm rather fond of it

99% of the times I am delighted if they guess the plot twist. I like it when I feel like my readers are on the same page as me (pun ...maybe not intended?) and see where things are going. Since my stuff is character driven, it tells me they can read the characters and their personalities well enough. However there was this one time when I had intentionally depicted something that was not going to be the historical norm (namely the p-51 mustangs' coats of paint on a cruiser in the opening scene of my WWII webcomic Brave Resistance). A war history buff called me out on it IMMEDIATELY saying "wait, these aren't how they're supposed to be!" and nearly spoiled the entire plot on page 2! I had to DM him to tell him to tone it down, and explain to him why the planes where the way they were. He apologized and stopped, but I'd wanted to throttle him for a while there

I agree with Rebel re: the purpose of a plot twist. In that sense, though, I don't think my story even has plot twists. There is no moment anywhere in the story where I want the readers to go "how could I have missed all the clues!!!" ... On the spectrum of brainy vs hearty, my story is very close to the extreme end of hearty. Like, think of stories like The Little Prince or My Sweet Orange Tree. Even when unexpected things happen, it's never about the brilliant reveal. The most shocking thing in My Sweet Orange Tree comes out of nowhere, and it works for that book. Heart of Keol is a lot like those two in this regard. Not exactly the same, but pretty dang similar!

So back to the question, honestly? I want people to be able to guess. The usual bane of my existence is the opposite problem: people not knowing wtf is going on. My story isn't supposed to draw its strength from its surprises, so guess away (edited)

I love it when the reader guesses the gist of the plot twist a few pages just before the reveal. I sort of follow the novel structure idea that the reader should see what’s coming next right before it hits them, hence rewarding their investment in the story. Wild speculations without the clues I’ve planted are interesting. It does make me wonder if I relied too much on tropes or left too big of the crumbs. That being said, I’m not too fussed by readers predicting the general directions of the plot because it’s all about the character reactions. Could they predict that too? Maybe, to a degree. But there are a lot of subtext I try to write in my characters that give some nuances that I feel may entertain even those who guess correctly how the story would go. TL;DR: guess away. Love reading theories. The story is set so I won’t be changing anything big but perhaps layer the reveal with subtleties.

I've actually never had readers guess what's coming next. I mean, unless you count obvious, broad stuff (such as "the MCs get together"). I mean, it IS a romance. But in regards to big plot events, no one has gotten remotely close with their predictions (which kind of surprises me, because I drop clues everywhere). To be fair, I'm only a chapter in, so I guess it makes sense. But I am excited for the day when people finally guess

If anyone does pick out certian plot twists I will be like "Yesssss people do think like me, I am not crazy" XD because most of my twists are all shown from the start through hidden background things so if people found them I am excited they took time and effort to figure out twists

I love it. I haven’t been disappointed about it yet, and I don’t think I will be. It doesn’t make me change the twists at all - in fact, I’ve even shifted some story elements around to give the readers even more confirmation that they’re right, earlier on in the plot. I want to reward them with a treat, and now they can revel in their cleverness a bit longer Hee hee.

Admittedly, a lot of it is due to the nature of the medium. I know that webcomics take ages to get to major reveals or spoilers - I can wait to totally-confirm things, but I can't wait to... almost-confirm things? I don't want people to get tired or frustrated. I know I've gotten angry at anime shows that take 20 episodes to confirm something we guessed at episode 1, so I like when these things are all but confirmed early on. It can be really fun to know a secret that, maybe, the heroes don't know. It gives an extra layer of STOP, NO, DON'T GO IN THERE! in times of danger

But given my propensity to practically s c r e a m my spoilers to people who I can trust with the plot... a lot of it is just me bursting at the seams wanting to say YES YOU'RE CORRECT.

Yes! I just want to tell readers, "Oh God, you're right! Good job!" But instead I usually respond with a ":)" or "I like this analysis!" Which I think is basically just confirming it. But if it's a real life friend? I cannot resist from telling them everything. I've even spilled spoilers in this chat before, trusting that most people here haven't read my comic. Kind of backfired when I reached a major plot point and someone commented, "She's been waiting to bust out this plot point for so long." Oops, guess someone did read my forum posts. But even if I did spoil things in the comments, is it really that big of a deal? I'm the kind of person where spoilers don't detract from my experience of things and sometimes even adds to it. But some people care about spoilers, so.(edited)

"Big" is a weird adjective here because they're very small scenes in some ways. Very intimate/personal

Oh gosh, I agree that plot twists shouldn't be entirely out of the blue, since it's nice to have the hints that give people the crumbs to follow a trail. But like, since I write a lot of these chapters way in advance, and if I had the chance I'd love for them to be readable in one go as opposed to a page per week, I fear that I'm boring people with a predictable punchline? That being said, I get so many comments that predict the end of the chapter or the punchline or the joke. And I'm always like "haha maybe????" but inside i'm like "oh my god, they got me, THEY GOT ME"

Occasionally there are problems with Korean webcomics that were originally webnovels? Because people who've read the novel version sometimes spoil things in the comic comment section, and that's not cool. They're not even theorizing, they're straight up spoiling.

Yeah, every reader is different though. I have some people who explicitly have asked me not to share spoilers, and others who kinda beg for them! So I worry if some people don't like to see predictions (I know my dad doesn't like when I guess things in a movie)

Or like, if I'm marathonning a show with my bro, we're entirely silent except between episodes.

But comment section is like, you have to actually go there.

And for me, the biggest worry would be that someone seeing a prediction would make them enjoy my comic less. It doesn't mean I necessarily think it's all that common, but I refuse to say it won't happen I think

haha in our RPG games sometimes people drop character plot hints way at the start of the campaign, and my friend will turn up, 7 months later, " remember when Character A said this? I remember"

Anyway, I love when my readers theorize! I don't believe any reader has guessed any of the major plot twists in the first two books, despite there being enough evidence beforehand to make a guess (closest was "whatever zebugu's doing, it's not evil this time" but not the specifics of what he was doing). Though, if they had, I wouldn't mind, since that's max two years they gotta wait before the reveal (and that's assuming they guess it on the cover page lol). Book 3 is a different beast - strictly speaking, there's enough evidence for someone to predict both twists at the end of the book, right now. And... that may be an issue, given that this book will take over three years to reach those twists. So... we'll see if anyone guesses them. What's weirdest is when people guess things almost correctly with absolutely NO hints. And it's some super specific and minor thing like "Mizuki is secretly the reincarnation of a thousand-year-old dragon". Like... there haven't even been dragons mentioned in the comic up to this point. Nor any events from a thousand years ago. And like, that's not exactly the truth, but how do you get THAT close???(edited)

I will never tell someone if their guess is right or wrong, but if they do guess it, it probably means I'm foreshadowing well.

Then again I also find myself writing by the seat of my pants, so plans are subject to change.

The original question mentions “plot twists” but I’m never trying to make a plot twist personally. I may intentionally obfuscate things, but I don’t ever try to do wild twists and turns. So when a reader predicts what will happen, I actually don’t mind, and I’m pretty happy that it’s following a logical chain of events. On the other hand, when readers are totally off base, I think that’s REALLY fun.

Most of my readers feel that my comics are twisty and surprising, but I often get at least one reader who correctly guesses what will happen, even if sometimes they’re joking or think their theory is wild and out there. Honestly it feels pretty awesome to have a reader shrewd enough to puzzle out the clues, because that means they’re really paying attention. I don’t have a very big audience and most of the time they’re silent, so anytime someone leaves a comment that is carefully thought out, it makes me really happy. As for the times readers joke or wildly speculate but inadvertently hit the nail right on the head, I find those very amusing. I really love stories with well done twists and turns, and so I try very hard to execute good plot twists that have enough foreshadowing to be ‘Aha!’ moments rather than ‘Where did that even come from?’ moments. So I love when readers are both properly misdirected AND when they pick up on the clues and deduce the twist.(edited)

Does my comic have plot twists? I don't really think about it. People have correctly guessed things that will happen in a chapter, someone even guessed correctly on the climax when a character named Daniel was introduced... well, it was more like "I hope things don't turn out like -blank-!". I don't mind, just because they guessed something correctly doesn't mean they know how the story will go for sure, it just means that they're theorizing and that is something I always encourage. I don't think that means the story is boring or predictable either, some people are just really good at that stuff. Even though I don't think my comic is very mysterious/unpredictable it's still impressive when someone pays attention to all the little visual and dialogue details, then guessing correctly about a future event based on them. Nothing more flattering than someone enjoying your comic enough to analyze it.

Lmao! I can't tell you how many movies I've ruined for people because I guessed a plot twist correctly.

Haha, honestly same. I’m not allowed to make predictions during movies or TV shows anymore bc I almost always get it right. XD Webcomics I find a bit more unpredictable, though, because most of them aren’t nearly as formulaic as mainstream film.

Yeah! Even if it's not obvious most of the time movies go by a pattern or set of traits, once you learn how they go a film or TV show becomes a lot more easy to figure out right away. The only time I'm stumped is when the movie is really surreal or absolutely awful. That's the nice thing about webcomics in a way. I assume a lot of creators haven't had professional training, and we want to tell a story more than be entertaining to the masses, so stories are less predictable. They don't always go by a formula, which can be refreshing.

100: Accidentally Saving the Day

Pairing: Unspecified; I’m using Solus x Anakin because this is a new thing and I’m me.

Fanfiction Trope MASH-UP

Anakin is our Actual Barista in this because it’s a side job while he’s in college for Engineering and Robotics. Possible School Location include Carnegie Mellon and M.I.T.

Solus, I’m going a little off base and setting this is the MCU, is an agent working for Kyr’tsad. She’s currently using “Artist with a Side Job” as her cover for working in this place. Really, she’s trying to get a lot of dirt on a Senator who frequents the place.

Romance happens because this job is taking way fucking longer than it should and she’s a little bored. Plus, Anakin is stupid smart and hella funny. This may turn into a side recruitment gig cause they always need more Robotics Hellions. Plus, he fights good and she’s always down for recruiting more people who hold their own.

Accidentally Saving the Day happens when the Sentaor tries so sketchy shit and Solus moves. Anakin and her had been hanging out that night and she couldn’t just kick him out on the side of the road. So, he gets to go to the kind of place where “Getting Knocked Out and Waking Up with Less Organs.” Solus being Solus is like, “Stay in the car. This’ll just take a minute.” and casually gears up from stuff from her trunk then goes blazing in.

Now, Anakin is good at a lot of things but sitting still while Action is Happening or Follow Orders as Intended aren’t among them. First body that gets thrown out of a window becomes his clue that he’s clearly getting involved. Then there’s gun shots. Now he’s just curious. What she called, “My family liked MMA” he’s taking as “I’m maybe a Mafia Enforcer” cause seriously her car? That shit’s totally mafia.

Anakin, armed with like nothing, follows the trail of carnage to where she was heading. Lots of knocked out guards who just aren’t getting back up any time soon, some blood, and no sign of her being hurt. Weird, but it’s Anakin. He’s gonna keep going. Solus, he discovers, is clearly handling her own with a big crew of guys. It looks like something straight out of a comic with how she’s throwing down. Ballet with bullets or something.

When the senator is trying to sneak out because clearly he’s doing shady shit and Solus is almost done with his people. Him and his guards move to leave. Anakin knows the guy from the coffee shop. He’s a total asshole who doesn’t tip and always wants his shit remade like three times. Or, sends in his assistant to clog his line up with a like 25 separate, complicated drinks on a single order but with seven different forms of payment.

Using the element of surprise, he knocks out the guard and is staring down the Senator. Guy starts the begging shit cause he’s a shorter guy with a beer belly and cheap botox next to Anakin “6′2″ of Muscle, Could be in Fight Club and Built My Own Prosthetic” Skywalker. Anakin gives him a few seconds of offering money and groveling because damn this is fantastic. Then he knocks him out. Because money is nice but getting to punch a smug customer in their stupid ass face? Priceless.

Solus finds him and lights up because “Now I don’t have to chase him down!” then frowns, “I told you to stay in the car.”“When do I listen?” “Never.”

The Promised Party Cat Callout (Long Post!)

Here we go, y’all. I’m not gonna go all-out with the salt and vitriol typical of my longer posts, because... this isn’t about me being salty. This is about highlighting the issues with Mod Party Cat of the fictionkinfessions blog.

Nor is it intended to bully or chase Party Cat off of Tumblr. Yes, this is a callout post; no, it’s not an invitation to attack the blog with hate or stalk their sideblogs. And no, it’s not just my personal opinion, which we will get to.

This is intended to show Party Cat exactly what is wrong with how they’re running the blog and how they’re behaving. If they learn from it, good. If they don’t... then, they don’t.

Last of all, we did gather opinions from both kin and non-kin in a survey. This isn’t meant to antagonize the entire kin community. In fact, the information from kin really helped to support this argument. Thank you to the kin people who did respond to the survey.

With that being said... let’s begin.

The main reasons for the callout are these:

Passive aggressiveness to or about other mods

Passive aggressiveness to anons/senders

“Cutesy” or overly positive typing/behavior in serious situations

Material that is generally improper for this kind of confession blog

Hypocrisy

Majority of survey takers agreed with each other and with the points made in this callout

We’ll go one by one.

Passive-aggressiveness to/about mods

(The bottom half of the mod page was linking to Party Cat’s other blogs and crediting some theme elements. Not relevant to callout.)

There isn’t a lot of information about the other mods or why they left; the general consensus on Maude is that they left because of school, but nothing about Kuroocrow. Now, why is this passive aggressive?

There was no need to publicly say that there’d been a “catfight” (ha ha, funny) with Maude. We don’t know if Maude even gave Cat permission to say this. If not, it’s disrespectful. (Nothing wrong with saying they’ll be okay.)

What Cat is saying about Kuro is even more aggressive than that. “They refuse to do anything to help!” Okay. That could be true. There’s still no need to rant about it.

“Ask them on my behalf what the fuck is going on with them!” Adding ‘on my behalf’ comes across as incredibly self-centered. And saying ‘what the fuck’ adds to the aggressiveness. Even if not intentional, that is how it looks, and it needs to be changed.

All that needs to be said is something like this: “It’s just me, Party Cat! Maude is on hiatus, and Kuro is absent. If anyone knows what’s going on with them, please DM me!” There. That’s respectful and to the point.

Passive-aggressiveness to Anons/Senders

This section will be... long.

So.. there’s a lot of overlap here with the ‘cutesy typing’ issue, but I’ll get to that later. I had to crop the screenshot to just this because there was so much that wasn’t 100% relevant to the callout. (Context for this post: Cat promo’d a kin server, an anon found some unsavory things happening in the server, anon warned Cat, and Cat said this.)

“...Seriously there’s like a few thousand people following this blog” is an unnecessarily rude way to say this. The point itself is legitimate and understandable. It really just need to be reworded so as not to come off as salty.

Alright, I’d understand this one if there was anything in the blog description or about pages to warn people that the blog can get dark. Confessions about death, suicide, rape, incest, murder, violence, high emotional distress, etc are jarring to see when this blog tends to be lighthearted.

While this anon does look a little bit defensive or offended, that’s so slight compared to the defensiveness of the response. Personally, I read the question as confused. (Y’all, who agrees with me? Who disagrees?)

Cat... people don’t tend to expect very dark content on a blog like this, especially when there’s no warning, and they might not even bother to blacklist the tags you use because they don’t expect it. (That’s a guess. If I’m wrong, then smeone should explain it. ) There isn’t much of an answer here - you just answer their question with another question.

So, okay, I agree with Cat saying that this ask is vague. And it’s not good to add “but” after something like ‘No disrespect...’ -- because “but” does negate whatever precedes it.

Those are the only things in this screenshot that make sense. Now we’ll get to the things that are passive-aggressive.

“Maybe it’s because...” Vague in itself. ‘Maybe’ gives you wiggle room to get out of this perfectly legitimate critique, instead of saying “Hey, I seem this way because...”

“People keep asking me things without providing the barest amount of information...” People actually do provide information. Sometimes it isn’t enough. That doesn’t mean they aren’t trying, and they could be dropping the subject because of how you respond (nobody really wants to interact with someone being rude).

“I just fill up the dead air with jokes!” Plenty of people do. And it’s fine... just not in this situation. When something serious comes up, you shouldn’t simply make a joke and move on. This reads like an excuse, and even a way to shame people. (”Oh... it was only a joke? Now I feel bad! :(” )

“And then people get more mad because... I don’t know!” This looks like you are blaming people for their feelings. People are allowed to feel mad. It’s never okay for them to send hate or be dicks -- which they’re not doing.

“Nobody reads that page, lollerskates!!” This could easily be solved by a regular, repeated post linking to the FAQ. Or a regular, repeated post explaining why confessions sometimes aren’t answered. Or something like that. Just a bit more effort.

Okay: “This blog is only for kin. We want to keep it within our community. If you have questions, check out this FAQ!”

Not okay: “You have no business interacting! You don’t know anything!”

That ‘sincerely’ isn’t very sincere at all. Most antikin will respect kin not wanting anti interaction on their blogs. Those that don’t are being dicks. And non-kin people who don’t have anything against kin are not at all likely to be hostile toward you, so being this hostile to them is unwarranted.

It’s confusing that this community, in general, would like non-kin and antis to become educated about what kin is/means... then such an influential blog sends a message like this. Regardless of how people feel about Cat, she does have pretty decent influence and a huge following; it’s very easy for impressionable kids to pick up on this weird double standard.

There’s nothing wrong with preferring to let someone else educate non-kin. There’s nothing wrong with pointing non-kin in a different direction.

There’s a lot wrong with blatantly pushing them away like this. It’s rude.

Inappropriate Cutesy/Overly Positive Typing

Cat isn’t stupid and knows full well what this anon (same one from before) meant. There was no need whatsoever to make such a giant joke of the question.

(Not to mention... why the hell would she tell everybody that she has so much medical debt and can’t afford electricity? I don’t know her situation so I can’t say it is/isn’t a joke too. It is something that could genuinely upset people, and some would even believe it. It’s a terrible thing to say.)

“:3c” Not harmful in itself. Just doesn’t belong in a serious ask.

This anon meant a post in which they were venting about abuse... they were angry that a character had abused their kintype. Cat knew that, considering their abuse content/trigger warning tags. This response looks sugarcoated and mentions some random anecdote about a thing Cat does, which is not appropriate in a situation regarding child abuse.

This was in response to something that was legitimately annoying Cat and breaking a blog rule. It does not look like an appropriate or effective way to address the issue - even looks immature. Did people take this seriously?

Yes, this really is a tag on a venting ask about a real life abusive stepfather. A joke. In a venting ask... about an abusive home life. There is a tag saying ‘Your stepdad sucks’, which is good. A joke, though, is too far.

There is, as I’ve been saying, no need for this. It’s very strange to ‘roleplay’ and act cute when there’s possibly a toxic Discord server going around.

When asked if any of Party Cat’s mannerisms were bothersome, one person said this:

Shoutout to @queen-dragon-slut (damn Tumblr won’t link you) for getting me this screenshot.

What the hell, Cat? This is serious -- this is even more serious than people sending confessions saying things like “Ugh, I hate this kintype!” or “Ugh! I hate that character!” This person actually endangered their own health and safety to force themselves into a ‘kin shift’. And it’s in no way Cat’s fault.

However.

To not even provide the anon with links to help blogs or any kind of resources, list some tags, and move on, shows an incredible lack of effort. Not only that, but I feel bad for this person. One note. That’s it. Nobody seemed to care that someone was suffering this badly, Cat included, which is, quite frankly, disgusting.

Again, something this dark doesn’t belong on a casual confession blog (which is what your blog looks like it’s supposed to be). And again, it genuinely fucking worried me. Is this person okay?

And it’s not even tagged. Not as ‘suicide’, not as ‘depression’, not as ‘suicidal ideation’, nothing. Which is what this is. This person feels like they’re not needed, like they’re pointless, which exactly what suicidal ideation does to you.

You can’t DM an anon saying, “Hey, you alright?” You can, however, at the very least, link them to the help blog page.

Mod Ryan, who is also part of the fictionkin community whether we like it or not, has seen:

People saying they liked to kill

People saying they weren’t at all sorry for violent things their kintypes did

Asks saying characters or people should’ve killed themselves

@queen-dragon-slut said about some of the suicide-ish confessions: “ Tbh when somebody sends in a confession saying “I killed myself in my canon” it just sounds like they have some fantasies of wanting to kill themselves but cover it up by saying that their kin kill themselves and try to play it off. That’s not healthy.”

Hypocrisy:

Alright. That looks reasonable -- but wait.

The asks and other screenshots I just posted do strongly come off as suicide wishes, if not actual notes.

Here’s what people had to say when asked if they’d seen Party Cat acting hypocritical. I did not even mention suicide asks or dark asks in the survey question:

Do you have any prediction for upcoming µs UR pairs? It really caught me offguard how early pana was back with a UR.

I actually haven’t been keeping track of the µ’s URs, so I had to draw up a really jank-looking chart. Literally. Here’s the chart I hand-wrote:

If you want to attempt to read this atrocity - this chart follows my personal method of keeping track of URs, which I’ve used in previous charts for Aqours UR predictions. A quick explanation: you go across for the girl you’re looking for, and go down to see who she’s paired with. For example, if you go to the first column (Ho) and move down until you hit the third row (Ko), that box is labeled “1 S”. This means Honoka was the first UR in the new µ’s rotation, had a Smile attribute, and was paired with Kotori.

(By the way, IDK if y’all have noticed but the first 9 URs were for each girl’s primary attribute. Kotori, the second UR, was a Pure card; Eli, the third UR, was a Cool card; and so on.)

The explanation for my predictions, as always, is fairly long, so I’ll leave it under a cut. Here’s the end result:

The next UR pair will be a Cool UR Honoka paired with someone from the soldier game trio (i.e. Umi, Maki, or Eli).

Nico will likely be in the UR pair after that, paired with Eli or Maki.

Last UR in this rotation will be Eli or Umi paired with an unknown girl.

My tentative personal guess for the upcoming pairs: HonoMaki, EliNico, Umi/???.

Full analysis under the cut~

At this point in the rotations, we’re in the middle of distributing the third URs for each girl. This makes it easy to predict what attribute they will be. The remaining cards are as follows:

Honoka (Cool)

Umi (Pure)

Maki (Smile)

Eli (Pure)

Nico (Cool)

To predict the next pair, we can use two rules. First, there’s the general rule of “whichever girl has gone the longest without a UR will likely show up next”. Of course, this rule isn’t super-strict (as you’ve mentioned, Anon, with the recent Hanayo UR), which is why it’s a rule-of-thumb rather than something that will give us a 100% accurate prediction.

The second rule we can use is the general rule of “whichever attribute is skipped in a pair will show up in the next”. What this means is that since a UR pair obviously features only two attributes, the third attribute will likely show up in the next UR pair. Again, since this is a general rule, it isn’t necessarily followed strictly. However, it’s been followed pretty closely for the new µ’s rotation thus far, so we can use it as a fairly reliable guideline here.

For Rule #1, the girl who’s gone longest without a UR would be Honoka, who hasn’t received a new (non-promo) UR since June 2017. RIP Honoka fans. :(

Rule #2 says that one of the URs in the next pair should be a Cool card, since the recent RinPana pair was Pure/Smile. As you can see above, Honoka is a Cool card - that makes her super-duper likely to pop up as a new UR in the next pair!

So, assuming that my guess turns out correct and Honoka will indeed be one of the new URs in the upcoming set, who’s gonna be paired with Honoka? First off, let’s cross out who’s not gonna be paired with Honoka here - Nico. Nico’s next card is a Cool attribute (aside from very special cases, UR pairs never have the same attribute), and she’s had a UR fairly recently (well, January 2018 doesn’t seem that recent, but it is in terms of the new µ’s rotation).

That leaves Umi, Maki, and Eli - coincidentally, the soldier game trio. :3c

Now, let’s eliminate more from this list based on who can’t be paired up with each other in future pairs. Since we’re approaching the end of the third rotation, what we have left is 2 UR pairs plus the last girl to get her third UR. This last girl will be paired with whoever is lucky enough to start off the fourth UR distribution.

Notice that Maki is the only Smile UR left in the pool of potential new URs. Recall that rule #2 says that it’s more likely than not that a certain attribute won’t be skipped over for a long time with UR rotations. If Maki ends up as the last UR in this rotation, we’re gonna end up with two Pure/Cool UR pairs before we finally get the Smile Maki UR. That’s not impossible - but it’s highly improbable given rule #2. We can thus assume that Maki is either gonna show up in the next UR pair or the one after that.

This leaves us with a handful of possible combinations:

1. HonoUmi (Cool/Pure), NicoMaki (Cool/Smile), Eli/??? (Pure/???)

2. HonoUmi (Cool/Pure), EliMaki (Pure/Smile), Nico/??? (Cool/???)

3. HonoMaki (Cool/Smile), NicoEli (Cool/Pure), Umi/??? (Pure/???)

4. HonoMaki (Cool/Smile), UmiNico (Pure/Cool), Eli/??? (Pure/???)

5. HonoEli (Cool/Pure), NicoMaki (Cool/Smile), Umi/??? (Pure/???)

6. HonoEli (Cool/Pure), UmiMaki (Pure/Smile), Nico/??? (Cool/???)

This is already a small pool to choose from, but we can narrow it down even further. Umi and Nico had a UR pair back in early 2017 (the Flower Bouquet set), so we can cross off #4. The same goes for UmiMaki, who were in the Crayon set together, so we can also cross off #6.

From here, we can consider a few options. If we assume each pair has an equal probability of happening, then the winner here would be HonoUmi with 2 lots in the pool vs. 1 each for HonoMaki and HonoEli. However, just the fact that I’ve done a whole bunch of analysis above indicates that each pair doesn’t necessarily have an equal chance of happening.

There’s one more general guideline to consider - the fact that SIF likes mixing up the order of the girls to keep everyone guessing. For example, if a certain girl was the first UR in a new rotation, chances are she won’t be the first one in the next. Nico happened to be the last UR of the second rotation (the NicoPana Instrument set pair), so there’s a good chance that she won’t be the last UR in the third rotation. Again, it’s not impossible for her to end up as such, but it’s just slightly less probable - and predictions by nature are a combination of “what’s most probable?” plus gut instinct.

That sort-of eliminates #2. Thus, our final pool consists of:

1. HonoUmi (Cool/Pure), NicoMaki (Cool/Smile), Eli/??? (Pure/???)

3. HonoMaki (Cool/Smile), NicoEli (Cool/Pure), Umi/??? (Pure/???)

5. HonoEli (Cool/Pure), NicoMaki (Cool/Smile), Umi/??? (Pure/???)

…now this just makes it look like I made it harder for myself to guess which Cool trio girl Honoka’s gonna get paired with, haha. Well, if we apply Rule #1 (the girl who’s gone longest without a UR gets to have one next) here, HonoEli would be the top contender.

However, my gut instinct (which usually turns out to be wrong because my analysis skills are a heck of a lot better than my purely-based-on-luck guessing skills) says that the next pair is HonoMaki. Why? Honoka’s been paired with Kotori and Nozomi so far - a second year and a third year - so it’d be a clean way to end the third distribution by having Honoka finally paired with a first year. This would also be a nice way to get Nico to get paired with a third year, as her previous pairs were with first-year Hanayo and second-year Umi.

Of course, my logic here is obviously flawed since this means that Eli would be paired with both of her fellow third years by the end of this rotation. It’s obviously in no way a rule that SIF follows, since Rin’s also been paired up with Maki and Hanayo already. However, from the chart I’ve drawn up, there’s a small pattern of each girl getting paired with someone from each year: Kotori’s been paired with Honoka, Hanayo, and Nozomi; Hanayo’s been paired with Kotori, Rin, and Nico; and Nozomi’s been paired with Honoka, Kotori, and Eli.

…all right, so maybe this isn’t a “purely-based-on-luck” guess since it’s based off of some data, but still. I wouldn’t be surprised if all of my predictions here turn out to be wrong. For now, I’ll tentatively stick with #3 above as my guess. Now we’ll just have to wait and see.

Learning to Fly

Ho Ho Ho! Happy Holidays! Writing holiday fics is the only thing that gets me in the Christmas mood to be honest, so here goes! And it's only 43 days until the big, jolly guy arrives (but not counting at all). I hope you enjoy the premise, I did start this earlier in the year (in part) but decided it could be a festive season fic! If anyone has any cover art ideas let me know.

It's only three days until Christmas and flight attendant Caroline Forbes thought her day was going to be all candy canes, Santa Claus and carols until she meets an unusual passenger on a flight and soon realises there's more to him and the situation than she first thought.

I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings, coming down is the hardest thing…

Chapter 1: Santa Claus is Coming to Town

For the most part Caroline liked her job. Although being a flight attendant certainly had its pitfalls including; unpleasant air sickness mishaps, overbearing passengers with sometimes impossible demands and sleazy (not to mention married) pilots.

There were some advantages though including; heavily discounted travel, first class accommodation and a way to ease her itchy feet. Yes, she'd travelled extensively across the globe after completing high school but Caroline knew that wouldn't pay the bills. The next best thing? Flying around the country for work. At least that way she'd get to see some new places and hopefully experience new things.

"I'd like to wish everyone Happy Holidays and welcome you to Delta Airlines flight DL7693, non stop service to Memphis, Tennessee," Caroline recited through the cabin intercom. Sometimes it was difficult to keep up with all the places she was at times so she had to be extra vigilant to remember her destination.

She knew this spiel from memory given she'd said it enough times. "Please make sure all your cabin luggage is stowed away, the larger item in the compartment above and the smaller under the seat in front of you."

It was at that point she noticed a blonde peeking curiously at her from first class. There was no denying he was gorgeous but it wasn't like Caroline hadn't come across guys just like him on numerous flights. She had to admit that none had lips in such a deep shade of crimson though. It was at that point she faltered, realising she'd lost her place. Bonnie grabbed her attention from outside the cockpit door and gestured to her waist hurriedly. Caroline had to remember to thank her best friend for that little prompt later on when they were in cruising mode.

"Please make sure your seat belts are fastened low and tight, the attendants will now be coming around the cabin before take-off," she finished, noting a somewhat amused expression from her cute but distracting first class passenger as he clicked his seat belt into place as instructed.

"2A?" Katherine asked, nodding discreetly towards the cabin. "Trust me, I would have forgotten too if I got lost in those molten, brown eyes."

"Excuse me?"

"Oh please," she groaned. "If it weren't for Bonnie, who knows what would have happened to our passengers in an emergency without their seat belts?"

"Hilarious," Caroline growled in the brunette's direction before looking towards her saviour. "Thanks, Bon."

"My pleasure," she smiled. "Although my guess is on 3C." Caroline wouldn't admit it aloud, but the cute blonde was seated in row one, seat A to be exact.

"Did you ever think that maybe I just forgot…"

"Hell no," Katherine teased. "You're Caroline Forbes after all. So come on fess up, who was the gorgeous guy that distracted you? Twenty bucks it was the gorgeous but brooding brunette in 2A."

"I'll raise you $50 for the cheeky brunette in 3C," Bonnie offered.

"Are you ladies going to be doing any work today or should I consider this it?" Enzo barked, looking between them curiously. He was their Cabin Manager and attempted to take his job seriously most of the time, even if it didn't always pan out that way. He told them it was their fault for being distracting and entirely too much fun all the time.

"Of course not, Enzo," Katherine purred. "You know more than anyone just how well we can multitask."

"$100 on the blonde in 4B," he offered obviously overhearing their previous discussion, before making his way down the aisle to begin the obligatory safety presentation. Caroline just shook her head noticing the attractive, blonde girl seated there, most definitely his type but not hers.

The airplane took off smoothly and they were now at cruising altitude. Caroline was out of her seat immediately, offering refreshments to first class. She was trying to ignore the penetrating gaze of Mister 1A but it was difficult. Sure, she'd had guys flirt with her on flights but this one merely sat back not offering any lame conversation at all, in fact he'd been relatively quiet so far.

"Would you like a drink?" She enquired, finally gathering the nerve to speak to her passenger.

"Uh sure, thanks," he murmured in an unmistakable English accent. "Whiskey, neat." He didn't look at her when he spoke, just tapped both feet on the floor, his fingers on the arm rest drumming in the exact same time.

"Here you go," she said offering it to him. "Would you like a snack"

"No, I'm fine," he smiled, albeit uneasily. "But thank you."

When he'd distracted her on the ground, Caroline had assumed he'd be trouble but his current demeanour wasn't expected at all. She walked away, tending to the other passengers. Not that it stopped her sending sneaky glances at him during the flight. The one thing she knew for sure was that he could fidget and for some reason she felt sorry for him.

"Don't worry about my brother, it's just normal," the blonde in 4B said almost reading her thoughts. "Can't sit still to save himself."

"And you're perfect, princess?" The cheeky brunette from 3C Bonnie seemed to like chimed into the conversation.

"The same accusation could be directed at you, Kol," the brooder from 2A added to this already strange conversation.

Caroline was starting to feel like she was in the twilight zone. It was unusual to find travelling companions flying in different rows but these people seemed to know each other. In fact they fought like something resembling siblings. She busied herself, ignoring the curious glances of her colleagues as she did so. The one thing she tried to avoid was getting involved in personal arguments. The captain announced their descent soon after thankfully and Caroline tidied up quickly, not before sending a small smile in the blonde's direction.

The wheels connected with the runway, something Caroline was familiar with but she couldn't miss his steady glance on her as they taxied their way toward the airport. In fact he'd been staring at her ever since they descended through the clouds and headed towards their destination. Most people would think it was extremely weird (and it was) but Caroline could tell he wasn't the best flyer and for some reason she wanted to help, even with the surrounding peanut gallery commenting on everything for whatever reason.

The Madison Hotel, Memphis - four hours later

Caroline had followed through with her usual post flight rituals, spending a good forty-five minutes soaking in the bubble bath and then unpacking her clothes, even if it was only for one night. When she'd begun in this profession, it had been new, exciting and fun but Caroline had to admit it had become a somewhat repetitive and tiring. All she wanted to do was stay in one place she loved with someone who liked it as much as her.

"Caroline, Katherine!" Bonnie yelled out from the living area. She secured the white robe tightly around her waist and came into the room as instructed.

"What's going on? Don't tell me Katherine wants us to leave so she can have another all night orgy." Caroline joked thinking about her friend's unabashed sexual appetite. As the words came out, she was faced at the front door of their suite with two familiar brunettes and an opinionated blonde regarding her curiously.

"Nothing like embarrassing a girl, roomie," Katherine chided, her olive cheeks decidedly rosy, a clear sign she'd been caught out by the serious and somewhat judgmental brunette to the left.

"We need your help, Ms Forbes," the broody one implored, now moving into the room. Caroline couldn't miss just how embarrassed her usually unembarrassed friend now looked by his looming presence.

"Suddenly, I feel like I should be more formally attired," she mumbled. "Or possibly in a superhero costume given I'm being asked for help?"

"How about Wonder Woman?" The younger, cheeky one she now knew as Kol joked.

"In your wet dreams," the blonde girl growled. "My brother has an extreme fear of flying and I've never seen him more relaxed than on your flight this afternoon."

"Well, that's good, I suppose," Caroline bit out, still trying to come to terms with all these people in her suite while she was half dressed. "What does that have to do with me exactly?"

"It's you," the serious one offered. "You calmed him down today, unlike anyone else."

"And?"

"We need to make that the norm," the half distracted, cheeky one offered between his curious glances towards Bonnie.

"But why?" She huffed, feeling like she was part of a weird TV reality show or something. "Surely he can make his own choices?"

"Not when it comes to flying."

"But yet you do this without his consent?" Caroline didn't know the guy past their brief interactions today, but for some reason she hated the fact that his family were interfering without him knowing about it.

"He's going to be the CEO of British Airways in six months," the cheeky one offered, strangely in a now serious tone. Caroline hadn't expected that comment and was instantly dubious. "It's his legacy but he doesn't fly well. As you can imagine we are trying to help him as best as we can."

Caroline was stuck for words momentarily, wondering if their comments were actually authentic. She took a deep breath before replying. "So, what exactly do you want from me?"

"Any chance he could ride along with you for a little while longer?"

"I'm sorry?" She gasped, feeling somewhat dizzy as she regarded the bossy blonde.

"Well, it is the festive season, after all," the serious one added.

"Funny, I never took you for the Christmas type," Katherine drawled, looking at him curiously with her hands on hips. "If that's all you've got.."

"Don't mind him," Kol offered, hurriedly. "We can offer you monetary compensation."

"Oh really?" Bonnie asked, eyeing him curiously. "Funnily enough, it's not always about the money."

"Maybe so, but consider this our opening offer," the blonde said dryly, handing a cheque over. It was obvious she'd expected this response given it was already written and signed in neat, blue cursive.

Caroline couldn't believe their approach in the first place let alone that many zeros on a cheque. Santa Claus had apparently come to town but Caroline wasn't sure she was ready for his arrival.

I HAVE TO THINK MORE ABOUT THEM BC OH NO THEYRE CUTE but girl is chasing after some nb femme prodigy who she's rivals with and admires for more than just her skill theyre both emotionally constipated idiots tho so its like. (hand touch) thats enough for 100 years there is. so much tension. and prodigy seems so perfect on the outside but is actually in some kind of super strict fucked up program bc of her skill, and she hated it and is suffering ace pilot is the one to barge in headstrong and fuck everything up and get her out of there girl believes prodigy is amazing. really. incredible. a part of her feels like she'll never catch up . but even so watching prodigy walk into the unknown unflinchingly resolute ... it's both sad in a way bc she's being left behind but also she wouldnt have it any other way bc she thinks forward is the only way prodigy should be facing. its what inspires her. that strength ... h they definitely settle down together in the future tho bc i need ththattt

"when this is all over" said the prodigy, "come find me" this is so self indulgent anyway plotwise once both the govt and the enemy r revealed to be equally bad the main cast defect to a revolutionary group. they will Not win within the span of the novel but theyll have a small victory, very les mis one day more flavored, and even if they did not win they stood for something they believed in, did something to try and tell the truth... also i need more of a cast so i can kill characters off nice now all i have to do is fill all this in with world building and action and stuff and ill have a novel so many sci fi things have done the 2 pilot mind sync emotional thing right so if i do the same thing no one knows if i took it from one franchise or another i need to twist it around a little but i may have ideas haha i can. totally make this a part of my fucking huge sci-fi au really wanna call main girl lane and main boy khemrin . .. i cant unsee the girl as rey flavored so shes ending up w red hair and irish, but boy is SEAsian with a huge family, loyal dog who defects is african, prodigy is asian, other loyal dog feels south american prodigy... astrid is her real name but she may have a codename fsr? idk why i feel it. icarus? assassin defector... something that starts with an o or a d other loyal dog... i need to think but i also need to figure out the personalities of their respective pairs inserts minh as evil one. done. maybe mephis adjacent character for the... no mephis doesnt care abt anyone BUT hed be a great side character OH god what if au jonah and ambrose oh boy. I GUESS IM GONNA DEVELOP AMBROSE MORE ive only written him as a young adult but as a teen hes angry and rebellious and got drafted, ended up being a simple foot soldier but he meets jonah and a lot changes jonah's there on top secret bullshit, same program as astrid definitely has some shit to do With Experiments. astrid has enhanced eyesight/coordination on top of being an ace combat pilot, i think jonah might be able to open up warp gates or limited pocket space mephis is evil scientist who doesnt care abt casualties

I'm thinking about unnamed pilot lesbians and i am. enamored immediately holy shit god they're both so goal oriented and focused but once the fighting is finally over they finally allow themselves to embrace the intensity of their emotions for eachother and i am fucking perishing they were essentially raised as child soldiers so it's this clumsy process of trying to figure things out for the first time, this kind of innocent but intense and blooming love between two hardened soldiers, the years of war coming away when they're together for the first time actually fuck i did name them but i'm still not sure about ace pilot girl? i want to name her lane or something monosyllable, maybe i'll revamp raine and make her this oc instead... either way i'm just. ugh. UGH. FUCK. holy shit they love eachother so much

“I don’t think it’s curable. It’s treatable, but not curable.”

And with those dreadful words from their doctor just a few short weeks ago, country music singer/songwriter Coffey Anderson and his wife Criscilla’s life was once again put into an emotional tailspin that hasn’t stopped since Criscilla was first diagnosed with colon cancer last year.

But this time, they were told it’s stage 4.

And Coffey, the viral country crackup who has made a living not only on his sheer talent but his addictive way of looking at the bright side of life, broke down in tears.

“He never lets me see it,” Criscilla, 39, says quietly during a new interview with PEOPLE about her husband’s emotional reaction to her current cancer plight. “He just tries to keep smiling.”

And there had been plenty of smiles.

Before cancer became an everyday topic of conversation in their California home, the pair were just two kids with big dreams. Criscilla was a budding actress, choreographer and dancer, while Coffey was utilizing his music talents to lead worship at various churches. In fact, the two first met at one of those churches through mutual friends and began dating in 2008.

One year later, they were married.

But never could they predict what would happen to them nine years later.

“When you say that you will be there for each other through thick and thin and through sickness and health, you have to mean it,” Coffey, 40, says. “There are a lot of moments that you can never prepare for. I mean, I never thought I would be helping Criscilla brush her teeth or get to the bathroom in the middle of the night. But we are willing to do it for each other. Each of us are giving 100 percent.”

Indeed, it was May of 2018 when Criscilla started getting signs that something was just not right when it came to her health. The mother of three would often find herself doubled over in pain, trying her best to endure the stomach pains that would hit her out of nowhere, and then eventually subside.

“As a mom, you always feel like you don’t have the time to deal with things like this,” reflects Criscilla. “But there came a point when I couldn’t ignore it anymore.”

That time came when Criscilla was in Louisville, Kentucky, for a dance event. The pain got so bad that she ended up in the emergency room, where they diagnosed her with colitis and sent her home with an antibiotic and strict instructions to follow-up with her doctor back home in California.

But the pain continued, and days later, Criscilla would end up in the emergency room again, this time going home with some cramping medicine to see her through.

“The whole time, I had been sharing my story on Instagram, and my girlfriend chimed in and told me that her dad was a GI doctor in Long Beach and that I should go see him,” says Criscilla, whose Instagram followers are quickly approaching the 40K range. “By that time, I was in excruciating pain. I mean, I had stopped going to the bathroom. It was bad.”

Indeed, it was bad, so bad that when doctors attempted to do an emergency colonoscopy, they couldn’t.

There was a tumor in the way.

Criscilla would spend close to two weeks in the hospital, spending one of the 11 days in surgery, where the doctor removed two feet of her colon from her body. While there, she also learned that she would be going home this time with a stage 3C colon cancer diagnosis.

And now, after a brief remission earlier this year, things have gotten worse.

“The cancer has spread throughout my para-aortic region and has begun growing up my back,” she says of her current Stage 4 metastatic colon cancer diagnosis. “My ultimate goal is to be in remission and have it not be chronic but be in a situation where it can be completely healed. The ideal, if that cannot happen, would be to keep it maintained and have it not spread any further for the rest of my life.”

Criscilla will now begin three months of chemotherapy at City of Hope National Medical Center in California and spend much more time with a holistic doctor in Houston, who is helping Criscilla make some vital changes to her diet and her overall mental state.

“I honestly feel like this man is going to change my life,” says Criscilla, who is also looking at the possibility of traveling overseas for further treatment.

One of the cruel coincidences of all of this is that Coffey lost his own mom to lung cancer just 10 days before his 11th birthday.

“Life is not fair, but God is always good,” Coffey says, stopping for a moment to collect his thoughts. “I hate the smell of hospitals. I was 10 years old when my mom was going through her treatments, and I can still remember that smell. But I can also remember how my dad took care of my mom, and how he was the one carrying her to the bathroom and washing her back. So now, I’m taking care of my wife.”

Despite the dire circumstances they find themselves in, Criscilla and Coffey cling to each other, and to their kids — 8-year-old Ethan, 6-year-old Emmarie and 2-year-old Everleigh.

“Oh, these kids,” says Coffey, who plans to release a new country album in the coming months. “They bring so much joy and love with them. They are the sweetest children.”

“When they lay their head down on my shoulder, I just feel so lucky to be their mom,” says Criscilla. “When we are all together, everything is okay again.”

My makeup/skincare recommendations/tips

OK uh wanna put it out there that I am by no means an expert.. idk that anyone will find this helpful, so perhaps it will suffice to just be a reference for me to look at later on :3c My skin type.. white person. Acne prone. Sensitive (like used proactive, and even doctor prescribed shit and it burned my face). Combination (meaning spots of my face get oily while other places get dry.) I live in America, so the products I have are sold here... Uh it's hot and humid where I live so.. that's another factor I guess? ANOTHER disclaimer: as should always be known, what works for one skin may not work for another. Even if you fit the same/similar type, you may not have the same reactions or experiences with the same products or routines! This is what I do or what works for me! So.... now let's get started I suppose... Cleaning my skin.. I use CeraVe cleansing soap bar for like... everything. My body too.. I like it a lot bc it's not too drying, doesn't have strong fragrance to irritate skin, and better than using liquid soap which can be worse for acne prone skin. I do exfoliate via dry brushing, then put an oil on my skin to hydrate it. Coconut oil is really nice, but unforgiving if you put on too much.. I also use a spray version usually, or lavender if I want to relax.. If I wear makeup, I actually like using coconut oil to remove it best. It just... melts off. Only issue is again, getting rid of the coconut oil, so I usually follow up with my cleansing bar, then Simple Skincare cleansing liquid, and toner, then a tiny bit of coconut oil. I was told not to use c. oil every day because you could get... little bumps is what they said? So I do have an every day lotion which is also by CeraVe... just the hydrating body lotion. A bit cheaper than the face lotion for a bit more.. my everyday routine is just scrub face with warm water using my exfoliating glove, and the cleansing bar, then pat dry and hydrate with the lotion. I guess we're on to makeup now... I am poor, so my general collection is what my mom passed to me (stuff from maybe 20 years ago), what I've gotten for free here and there, and the once in a while splurge bc ooo shiny.. So yeah mostly drugstore shit. From what I have, Revlon eyeshadows suck. Their payoff is very poor. Same with almay. Cover girl is the only halfway decent one I have. BUT OK what I've heard: wet n wild is really good for drugstore. Some rimmel stuff is also good for being drugstore. Sadly, I've never tried any of those products myself (yet). I also didn't find any maybelline stuff in my collection sooo *shrugs*.. nyx, elf, uhhhh physicians formula, idk.. haven't tried these... heard good stuff about some of their stuff... honestly if I don't mention something in this just assume I'm not 100% or haven't used it or heard much myself.... Foundation/bb creams/etc: heh.. so here's one of (many) subjects that my (lack of) knowledge kinda shows... before, I was putting on makeup wrong... and so uhhhh I thought what I had didn't work for me when really I was using everything wrong. VERY IMPORTANT, right before you put on makeup, wash ur face. Exfoliate off all that flaky nasty skin, then put on a moisturizer. People will kill me when I say.. I don't wear primer... but again, haven't found a good one that doesn't ruin my face or make me greasy.. but moisturizing before makeuping kinda works as a primer in that it fills a lot of my pores so that my makeup doesn't settle in instead and accentuate them. I personally use No7 brand, carried by Boots stores, walgreens, and uh idk. I wear the lightest shade (calico? Sorry this is all from memory) in the little dropper bottle formula. It's gouda. Matches my skin perfectly tho.. I think the biggest issue with my old stuff is its too orange or dark.. shrugs. Liners: JORDANA... jordana is just... really great. My coworker has 🔥 wings every damn day and she swears by jordana pencil liner, altho she says the liquid is great too. I believe she recs wet n wild and rimmel liners too? Honestly I'm not huge on liner but jordana ones are great, I bought a No7 one that has super good vibrancy, I believe I have a liquid liner by Revlon that was pretty good? Haven't tested how well these stay on for long periods of time though... HMMM my memory is fading, when I close in on my makeup picks, I will update this post I swear.. heehee maybe I can update with links to products and tutorials, bc that's what saved me tbh.. Actually I'm tired.. WILL UPDATE LATER. I just figure nobody will read this/care anyways so it's basically for me heh

overwatch ramblings

okay @capnkeeta >:3c here’s my 2 AM ramblings abt blizzards fu cking writign. also @moonlitseer because she might want to read this too

A big issue with Blizzard’s handling of Overwatch is inconsistencies considering the lore and characterization. They have had consistent problems with this, and have so clearly not done any kind of solid planning considering the direction they will be taking with Overwatch’s general plotlines that the graphic comic that was supposed to be coming out for sale sometime around April 2017 was canceled mid 2016.

First Strike was supposed to detail the rise of Overwatch during the Omnic Crisis, which meant it would have mostly been about the original members of Overwatch, and would have taken place well before the current canon timeframe.

According to Michael Chu, it was canceled because the team “ultimately decided to take the story in a different direction”. While “the core of this story remains, we have changed and expanded upon how we see the events that took place during the first days of Overwatch”.

That, by itself, would read as fine, especially since Chris Metzen’s retirement meant that his views on the story’s evolution would be removed. However, the novel was very late in its development, and was probably mostly finished. That is a huge thing to cancel, especially since it was only 100 pages long and probably wouldn’t have told us too much beyond things we already knew about the early days of Overwatch.

If they felt their view on (supposedly) already established events had changed so radically that they had to cancel a graphic novel in its final stages of completion, the story for which had been in the works for years, then how can they move forward with the work as a whole with no established past to base their currently evolving plotline off of? Their willingness to dump the canon they were about to establish worries me, as to me to means they’re willing to scrap things at a moments notice, which will definitely have ripple effects once different plotlines start going.

Most importantly, they need to establish a strong base to move forward off of. Currently, they’re trying to push the story forward without establishing the past important events, or establishing much about most of their cast.

Their way of introducing more current events with the shorts is very well-handled, possibly because the shorts require a bit more production work. They are concise, worldbuild well, have excellent characterization, and insofar have not contradicted themselves. There are voicelines and effects in the game that make reference to them (for example, there used to be memorials to Mondatta in King’s Row. I’m not sure if they’re still there or not).

However, their comics are, honestly, a mess, along with their characterization. Now, a lot of their characters are still pretty much blank slates. They haven’t given most of them establishing comics or shorts (which I strongly believe they should do before moving forward with the plot), and instead seem to be switching between the Ana/Soldier vs Talon side of things and Bastion for... some reason. Don’t get me wrong, Bastion is a cool character, but they have gotten a short and a comic, the latest of which promises that their storyline will be followed. This leaves most of the non-Talon and non-original Overwatch heroes high and dry.

We have gotten no out of game establishing storyline media for Mei, Pharah, D.va, Lucio, Zenyatta, or Mercy. (Interesting how they’re all female or POC/POC-coded characters...) This is especially troubling for Mercy, since she is a major player in Reaper, Soldier, and Genji’s backstories, as well as the only original Overwatch team member who hasn’t gotten a speaking role in a comic or short yet. Lucio has gotten his EP on Overwatch’s website, but beyond that nothing.

We have gotten a minor establishing storyline Zarya, due to her ending cameo in Sombra’s short, but beyond that we don’t have much on her.

Orisa isn’t counted because she hasn’t even been released on normal servers yet, so it’s expected she hasn’t gotten any media beyond her gameplay video and introduction video.

This leaves a good bit of the cast just kind of floating around for now, until Chu decides to hopefully let them start doing stuff.

The lack of characterization now leads me into characterization issues concerning contradictions between medias!!

A perfect representation of their characterization problems is the newest comic, Binary, in which Bastion’s possible relationship to Overwatch is explained. With Torbjorn. Of all characters.

Now, I am glad that the writing team has decided to try to make Torb more interesting. As it stands, he is kind of a generic Blizzard character who does not stand out from the rest of the cast in any way. He has the most generic backstory, the most generically dwarven Blizzard design, and one of the most generic movesets/ults (below only Widowmaker and Soldier).

That being said, instead of realizing where he is now as a character- being very distrustful of omnics, as well as guilt ridden over his involvement with them- and building off that, they decided to just... ignore all that.

As evidenced by his voicelines in King’s Row- “If you ask me, the Brits have their heads on straight! Omnic rights? Pah!”- Nepal- “It's like a culmination of a thousand of my worst nightmares! Are you kidding me?!”- and Numbani- “No No No! N-O NO!”-, he has seen societies in which omnics can live integrated with humans, both peacefully and with societal upheaval. Seeing an entire society like Numbani be able to love peacefully with omnics did not sway him. Seeing omnics being abused, targeted, and straight up murdered did not sway him. (His comment on omnic rights is especially inappropriate, considering Mondatta’s assassination in front of a huge crowd of people took place in King’s Row).

But I guess getting offered a twig by a random omnic in a forest was enough to melt his heart.

There are so many ways Blizzard could have written this. As it comes off, it seems like they’re ignoring what little they’ve done with Torbjorn so far so that they could awkwardly just shove Bastion in with the team. They could have had Bastion help a child, save one of Torb’s family members, come to Reinhardt or his aid in a time of need! They could have had them emotionally actually connect, and have had his realization that yes, even bastion units can change and have that realization be actually emotionally charged and meaningful!

Instead they had some generic village be supposedly threatened by him, have Torbjorn conveniently be there for whatever reason, then have the two of them wander off into the forest together to somewhere.

They’re also very bad at establishing timeframes. We know that Rein was wandering around somewhere in probably Germany at the time of his comic. We know that their families were together for Christmas. We know Torb was in some random village in Swedenfor Binary. When did those take place in relation to one another? Where is Torb’s family? He clearly didn’t live in that village, so why on earth was he there? He’s retired, so why wasn’t he with his family? Did it have to do something with Winston’s recall? Was he specifically there to track down Bastion? If he was, is he taking Bastion to Winston? If so, why weren’t we shown that?

TL;DR - Blizzard’s writing team is skipping over a lot of important stuff in the canon, both for themselves and for the fans. They’re being inconsistent with the lore and with established characterization, and considering what amazing stuff we know their writing team can do, the most recent plot comics like Old Soldiers and Binary are just very, very disappointing, and honestly seem like they’re rushing us along with the plot while skipping over “less important” things.

Disclaimer: Of course, I’m just a fan. I’m not a part of the writing team, so maybe I’m 100% wrong. Maybe they have everything planned out and established and just needed the one rewrite, but from a fan’s perspective they are looking VERY disorganized.

016. What is their choice of weapon?

Both Valor and Umbra are highly trained in hand to hand combat. Umbra is trained more so for stealth so he usually just sticks with his knives, he does carry a pistol with him, but hardly ever uses it. Valor, if he can, would mainly just use him monoblades. Unlike traditional mantisblades, these come out straight from the wrist and have the ability to be ejected out. So have a sword in your forearm that can turn into a piece of steel traveling at m3, unfortunately that will also leave it at a one time use as the blade will destroy itself on impact with most things. But fun while it lasted.

052. What is your character’s worst flaw?

Valor's is he's always looking for his short comings, his failures, he pits a lot against himself when things don't go as planned. Or when life throws a curve ball and things just come apart. Even if he preforms flawlessly, if something goes wrong he finds some way in his mind to blame it on himself. A lot of that is because of PTSD and never quite coping with the death of his parents. A lot of people in his life have died, that's unfortunately a common thing in solo work and in the middle of a war zone. He holds that against himself though, and its festers in that wound, and he never really moves on from it. It just adds to what's already there, why he often refers to himself as "haunted".

Umbra is just... everything is wrong with that man. He's a serial killer with no real redeeming qualities other than he wont kill children or animals. Maybe that is his flaw, I dunno honestly. He doesn't feel like he gains anything from killing a kid, if anything he wants them to grow up to hate him or maybe take his place. Animals, he just has a soft spot for since he was always treated like one. He sees them to more as kin than humans, so he wont kill animals for that very reason.

053. What is your character’s greatest strength?

They're stubborn as fuck and just wont die. Valor should have been dead nearly three times over before 2077, just from major events in his own story. Umbra quite literally got sliced in half, through the shoulder straight down to his abdomen. Yet somehow managed to stay conscious long enough and zombie his way to sinking his knife in the target a whopping 15 times before he finally went over.

For actual accounts, Valor it would be his loyalty. If he swears something to you, he would carve out his own tongue before he breaks that promise. Even if you're 100% in the wrong he wont go against you, tell you you're stupid and an idiot for making those choices, but he'll get you out of it one way or another. Valor is very much for protecting his chosen family now, and once you get in that close loop, you're stuck with him.

Umbra is incredibly smart. The man is a master hacker, with years under his belt into getting into some of the toughest security systems. But beyond that he plays life like its a 4D chess game, everything is chosen, every move is calculated. He's never sloppy, and never careless, he doesn't get cocky because he plans on dying. He wants to be stopped, but he wants the opponent to out play him, and nobody in NC could do that without cheating him first.

063. How well does your character handle difficult people?

Valor has the patience of a Saint, but a lot of that is just years of Lazarus forcing the shut up and follow orders tactic down his throat. He's good at biting his tongue and keeping quiet when its needed, but if its not he's not shy to flex muscle and steel to get what he needs out of someone.

Umbra just goes stab.

20 Fantasy Hockey Thoughts

Every Sunday until the start of the 2018-19 regular season, we'll share 20 Fantasy Thoughts from our writers at DobberHockey. These thoughts are curated from the past week's "Daily Ramblings".

1. Word came down that Patrice Bergeron is on track to start the season with the Bruins after offseason groin surgery in June. This is the second consecutive summer that the 33-year-old has gone under the knife as he needed a sports hernia repaired last year. Bergeron will skip the team’s trip to China in mid-September but plans to appear in at least a couple of the domestic preseason contests.

Bergeron posted some incredible numbers in his 14th NHL season: 30 goals and 63 points in 64 games. His 0.98 points-per-game represented a career-high, as was his 13.4 conversion rate. The boost in production can be explained by a few causes. His centering arguably the most lethal line in the league with Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak is at the forefront. His high conversion rate and a career-high offensive zone start time come next. Last season, Bergeron started 59.4 percent of his even-strength shifts in the fun end of the rink. A far cry from the typical 40 percent he was used to for most of his career. (sep1)

2. Robert Thomas is a curious player this year. There were some quotes back in July that Thomas could legitimately be the No.2 center for the Blues this year, or at least on a line with Ryan O’Reilly. I’m not bullish enough on him to believe he’ll do that but it sure did sound like he’ll have every opportunity to make the team out of camp. (aug28)

3. J.T. Miller begins his first full season in Tampa Bay as a real threat to increase his across-the-board totals. After the deadline deal from the Rangers, the 25-year-old concluded his regular season by splitting time next to Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov on L1 and with Yanni Gourde and Brayden Point in the middle of the lineup.

Those 19 games bore out 10 goals, 18 points, and 45 shots on goal. Just six of those points came on the man-advantage, despite seeing 2:23 of power play time on the top unit. This appeared to be a match made in heaven for the Bolts and for fantasy owners. Until the playoffs came, of course.

In 17 postseason contests, his production dipped considerably. Two goals, eight points and just 32 shots on goal. Four of those points came on the man-advantage where his deployment shot up to 3:33 per night. As the team tried to get things rolling, he ended up on the third line with Gourde and rookie, Anthony Cirelli.

Coming into 2018-19, the questions are plentiful for the former 15th overall selection from 2011. First and foremost is his position in the lineup and positional eligibility. Fantrax has him as a RW/C, while Yahoo has him as a RW. Only ESPN has him as a C/LW option. Drafting him with the expectation that he meshes with Stamkos and Kucherov would mean you’re locking him down as a left-winger on your roster with no assurance that he’ll be given that eligibility. Not straight away at least.

The other option that the Bolts need to look at is if Cirelli isn’t ready to take on the 3C duties, how easy would it be to simply slide Alex Killorn up to 1LW and move Miller to 3C? That would be an even-strength killer to his fantasy value. It would also put his spot as the net-front on PP1 in jeopardy if Killorn found a little magic at evens.

The potential is there for a career-year for Miller. But the moving parts that need to come together are considerable. He'll be a big swing in the top 60 and I'd caution against reaching before 80 on draft day. Likely, he ends up living in the 55-point range that's he seen the previous two campaigns. (sep1)

4. How the Panthers’ goaltending situation will play out is anyone’s guess. Roberto Luongo was by far the better goalie last season (2.47 GAA, .929 SV%) but injuries have been a major concern. Lu was held to 35 games after missing time with both a thumb injury and a groin injury (the more significant of the two). Yet, James Reimer could end up starting more games than Luongo, not necessarily because Luongo will be injured a lot but possibly also to give Luongo more rest in order to be effective. So, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for Lu owners to handcuff James Reimer. Because Reimer could simply end up with more starts.

Compared to Luongo, Reimer struggled mightily last season (2.99 GAA, .913 SV%). On the other hand, Reimer has proven to be a timeshare-level goalie in the past, posting a 2.53 GAA and .920 SV% in 2016-17 and a 2.31 GAA and .922 SV% in 2015-16. If you’re looking in the discount bin for a goalie, you could probably do a lot worse than Reimer. (sep2)

5. Question posed to me this week: Does Mark Giordano’s fantasy value improve with Dougie Hamilton being shipped out of Calgary? During his three seasons in Calgary, Hamilton averaged around 2:25 of power-play time per game. This was slightly lower than Giordano, whose average was closer to the 3:00 mark. In fact, that was the criticism of the Flames in their usage of Hamilton – that he should have been the first-unit guy for what they had invested in him. T.J. Brodie is the other name in the mix and his power-play time was similar to that of Hamilton’s. So, I’d expect Gio to be on the first unit again, followed by either Hanifin or Brodie in the power-play pecking order.

What concerns me about Giordano is declined returns. After a 56-point season in 2015-16, he has settled in as a 12-13 goal, 38-39-point defenseman over the past two seasons. His shot total improved dramatically in 2017-18 (151 shots to 214 shots). However, Gio is turning 35 once the season starts and 35-year-old players don’t tend to have spikes in production at that stage in their careers. So, I’d have to say that despite solid ice time (nearly 25 minutes per game in 2017-18) and power-play time, his numbers probably won’t change much. And neither does his fantasy value. (sep2)

6. Noah Hanifin put pen to paper on Thursday. The restricted free-agent and new Calgary Flame signed a five-year pact worth $4.95 million per. Let’s remember that five million is the new four million – especially when it comes to blueliners. That makes this pretty good value for both sides. Hanifin will be 27 when the contract expires and will be set to join unrestricted free agency right in the midst of his prime. The team gets a young, top-four defender at under five million.

Hanifin has witnessed slight offensive improvements in each of his three NHL seasons. That culminated with 10 goals and 32 points in 79 contests last season. He was sheltered in Carolina, playing third pairing minutes at even-strength and skating on the team’s second power-play unit. A similar deployment is expected in Calgary as he’s immediately reunited with his former Hurricanes’ bench boss, Bill Peters.

It’s always a bit of a challenge to project a 21-year-old, especially one with nearly 300 NHL games under his belt. However, the 21-year-old has never projected as a premier point producer. He’s likely destined to living in the 35-point range for his primes years and be able to supplement the peripheral categories with a few blocks and maybe sniff 100 hits if he ramps it up. (sep1)

7. The Winnipeg Jets signed their top prospect, Kristian Vesalainen earlier this week. The power winger was selected 24th overall in 2017 after seeing time in the SHL. He made the transfer to the Finnish Liiga in 2017-18 and was a force. Twenty-two (2) goals and 43 points in 49 games were good to lead all U22 players in goals and points. His six points in five World Junior Championship games was a nice icing on the cake.

Vesalainen is trapped behind incredibly youthful depth on the wings in Winnipeg. That means he should begin his North American career in the AHL. But, watch out for this player in dynasty leagues. He owns high-end offensive skills and the size to impact the game in different ways than an Nikolaj Ehlers or Kyle Connor can at their size. (sep1)

8. Veteran Lee Stempniak was skating with some Bruins last week. This isn’t to say that the Bruins are on the verge of signing Stempniak, or anything, but it is a signing, or potential PTO, that would make sense. It would be a one-year, low-dollar contract that can easily fit on this roster and provide a bit of punch on the third, likely fourth line. This was just for local players so maybe he’s just getting some ice time in with top competition and Boston isn’t interested at all. Just found it curious. (aug31)

9. This week’s ‘Capped’ from Alex MacLean, which was Part 4 in his team-by-team series of players to buy and sell, made a point about one player in particular that changed my tune a little bit.

I have one salary cap league, it’s a keeper, and I had been thinking about putting in an offer to acquire Jeff Petry. Being that it’s a multi-category league, and he should be the power-play quarterback for the first half of the year, I thought it made sense. Alex’s point, though, that now would be the time to sell on Petry rather than to buy on Petry isn’t one I really considered, and it probably is the right move. Petry will hold a lot of value in multi-category leagues but even for maybe a top-20 defenseman, $5.5-million is a lot in a cap league. If he can be sold for a profit at this point, that’s an avenue worth considering.

10. In your fantasy leagues, look for arbitrage opportunities all Draft long. Arbitrage may be something unfamiliar to even long-time fantasy players. It’s something I’ve written about on this site in previous seasons as well as something that was covered recently by Cam Metz in one of his Eastern Edge columns. To put it simply, it’s identifying a player who can provide a similar value in similar categories to another player who is being drafted much higher. Basically, why waste a seventh round pick on a player if you think a similar option can be had in the 12th round?

This was something I alluded to in a Ramblings back in June on name value and actual production. Whether it be name value, excitement for a young player, excitement for a team, or any other number of reasons, players are over and undervalued all the time. Being able to assess each player on their own expected production and ranking accordingly can help identify these arbitrage opportunities. (aug31)

11. I suppose it depends on how you view the Blackhawks’ lineup: Is the Jonathan Toews line or the Patrick Kane line the first line? Regardless, here I mean the Kane line. I think most people can agree that Brandon Saad/Toews and Nick Schmaltz/Kane are going to be the top-two forward pairs. I want to know who is going to play with Schmaltz and Kane.

The natural option would seem to be Dylan Sikura but Artem Anisimov also played nearly 280 minutes with Schmaltz and Kane last year. We also have to factor coach Joel Quenneville, which means there’s an outside chance that Chris Kunitz could see some time on that line as well. This is like the situation in Tampa Bay where the difference between playing on the second line and third line is a gigantic gap and will have a huge impact on a player’s outlook for 2018-19. 12. The loss of John Tavares is clearly huge for the Islanders but it also could mean that Jordan Eberle moves to the top line alongside Mat Barzal, and also to the top PP unit. That wouldn’t be such a bad thing for his fantasy value. Plus/minus will be a concern for this entire team but there is going to be a significant difference in point potential between skating with Barzal and skating with whomever is the second-line center for this team.

I will be very interested to see if Barry Trotz just decides to keep the chemistry of Barzal and Eberle together, or if he sticks with the top-line winger duo of Josh Bailey and Anders Lee. It’ll make a significant difference in how we should view Eberle’s potential for the year. (aug30)

13. When I wrote about power plays earlier this summer, one power play that really stuck out to me was Los Angeles’. There is no doubt they’re going to have a heavily-used top unit, and there is no doubt that, if they’re healthy, Anze Kopitar, Jeff Carter, Ilya Kovalchuk, and Drew Doughty are going to be locks for the top unit. The question is who will be the fourth player? Do they go with a second defenseman like Jake Muzzin or Alec Martinez? Do they go with a fourth forward like Tyler Toffoli, Dustin Brown or Tanner Pearson? It’s a nice problem to have for the coach because he does have several options, but it could be a nightmare for fantasy owners.

We might not get this answer until late in exhibition season when the roster is nearly cut down to the actual NHL roster but it’s something to monitor for those with drafts that near the start of the season. It could mean the difference in a player having 15 power-play points or five. (aug30)

14. The Oilers have signed Jason Garrison to a PTO. Might not seem like much but remember that Andrej Sekera could miss a significant portion of the season with a torn Achilles and Darnell Nurse remains unsigned. Garrison is a veteran body for training camp at the very least, but I think given the Oilers’ lack of defensive depth he’s got a good shot to make the team. (aug29)

15. Marc-Andre Fleury posted stellar numbers (29-13-4, 2.24 GAA, .927 SV%, four SO) that would have made him a Vezina Trophy nominee had he not been derailed by a concussion for about two months. You might remember that the Golden Knights were forced all the way down to their fifth-string goalie from the WHL, while their AHL/ECHL goalies were dropping like flies. During that time, Malcolm Subban went 7-2-0 with a 2.33 GAA and .924 SV%, and Oscar Dansk went 3-0-0 with a 1.76 GAA and .946 SV%. Hardly a dropoff! Hopefully, you jumped off the train by the time Maxime Lagace took over, as he didn’t prove to be NHL-caliber with a 3.79 GAA and a .872 SV%.

It might seem like yesterday that Fleury was a rookie with the Penguins but he’s now 33 and has dealt with his share of both injuries and rough stretches. He seems to be in a great place now, though. So are the Golden Knights, who finished eighth in the NHL with a 2.74 GAA in their inaugural season. So, I would be okay with drafting Fleury at his average draft position while adding Subban as either a handcuff or a priority waiver-wire add, depending on how deep your league is. (aug29)

16. Something that stands out to me about Jaden Schwartz is his points-per-game numbers. Although he was held to 62 games in 2017-18, Schwartz still recorded 59 points (24g-35a), mainly on the Blues’ top line with Vladimir Tarasenko and Brayden Schenn. That calculated out to 0.95 points per game, which was the same number as the likes of Tyler Seguin and William Karlsson.

In case you’re wondering why Schwartz is not ranked higher in your multicategory fantasy league, only 11 of his 59 points came on the power play. In fact, his highest PPP total in his career is 15 from back in 2014-15. The Blues were ineffective on the power-play, with only the Oilers sporting a worse power-play effectiveness than the Blues’ 15.4 percent success rate. Schwartz also averaged the second-highest PPTOI among Blues’ skaters. The fact that the power-play game plan is to get the puck to Tarasenko might not bode well for Schwartz’s numbers.

Schwartz might have a reputation of being injury-prone, but he has played at least 75 games in three of his past five seasons. Don’t let that deter you from drafting him at least slightly higher than where he’s ranked by Yahoo, although it might be wise to knock off a few games from a full season in your projections. Dobber also mentioned the above comment in his Monday Ramblings, citing the Band-Aid Boy reason. He had an interesting thought about drafting players who seem to regularly miss a chunk of games as opposed to playing a full season. (aug29)

17. I want to look at goalies on ESPN and Yahoo only. Here’s a few things to note:

Carey Price is ranked a fair bit lower on ESPN (goalie number 14) than on Yahoo (goalie 10). Last week, I wrote that I’m probably not interested in Price being my team’s No.1 goalie but would consider him in the No.2 range. It looks like I may be able to do that in the one league I have on ESPN.

John Gibson, meanwhile, is ranked way higher on ESPN (goalie number 6, 41st overall) than he is on Yahoo (goalie 17, 95th overall). I think there are valid concerns about the Anaheim Ducks, chief among them being their aging stars. All the same, goalie 17 seems awfully low for a 25-year old goalie with such a stellar track record. If he starts sliding in your Yahoo drafts and you can legitimately grab him anytime outside the top-10 goalies, it’s too good an opportunity to pass on. (aug28)

18. Everyone has fallen in love with Charlie McAvoy and think that his arrival will spell the end of Torey Krug. Injury issues aside (I have concerns, but I also have concerns about Krug so that’s a wash), McAvoy is not stealing the PP job from Krug anytime soon. I find that fantasy owners get hunches and while these hunches may turn out to be absolutely correct, they almost never do within the timeline they expect. If they think ‘this year’, it ends up being ‘four years from now’. Krug had 37 points in the second half last season! Thirty-seven! It’s true, look it up. Does that sound like someone on the decline? And for those who respond ‘Yeah, but that’s because McAvoy was hurt’ – come on! McAvoy could return as an enhanced cyborg and it’s not going to remove a defenseman from his place on the roster after the guy got 37 points in 41 games to end the season! (aug27)

19. Someone wanted to know my thoughts on Erik Gustafsson. I love this question and immediately made a mental note to answer it here. The 26-year-old has improved steadily in the AHL and thrived last year with 17 points in 25 games. He finally got into the Chicago lineup on January 20 (likely delayed by Jordan Oesterle going supernova briefly before flaming out) and tallied two points. That earned him enough goodwill to keep him in the lineup for another 11 games, but he managed just one point. That got him scratched. Gustafsson returned to the lineup February 19 and stayed in the lineup from that point onward, posting 12 points in 22 games with ice time that eked steadily upward to close to 20 minutes per game towards the end. Impressive!

All Chicago did in the offseason to address their lack of depth on defense was to sign Brandon Manning, who is hardly a threat to Gustafsson. I have him penciled in for 31 points in 67 games and as a strong sleeper for topping 40. Look at the team – Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook are in decline but they are still 1-2. After that, competition for PP time is with Jan Rutta, Connor Murphy, Gustav Forsling and Manning (I don’t think the Hawks rush Henri Jokiharju). These are all No.6 defensemen on a lot of teams, as is Gustafsson. But it’s his spot to lose, which is the No.3 guy for PP ice time. (aug27)

20. We heard rumblings about Henrik Zetterberg missing the season but now we have more concrete information confirmed by the man himself. Zetterberg will miss Red Wings’ training camp and is out indefinitely but he is not ready to concede that his career is over. This news makes it seem more likely that he will miss the entire season and even end his career on LTIR. (aug29)

If Zetterberg cannot play, Andreas Athanasiou moves to center. I don’t see Michael Rasmussen in the NHL this year but Filip Zadina’s odds just increased. I really like what this does for Athanasiou, as he moves from third-line winger with minimal PP time to second-line center with secondary PP time. Rasmussen’s odds certainly improve and now he may get a nine-game trial, I just don’t think he’s ready to stick. Dark horse long shot: Joe Veleno. (aug27)

One thing I would like to add is that this undoubtedly solidified Dylan Larkin’s role. Larkin played just under 20 minutes a game last year but with the lack of depth at center now, it’s easy to see Larkin’s role expanding even more. We could see Larkin end up playing close to Aleksander Barkov minutes, which would be around 22 a night. It’s probably not what Jeff Blashill, or any coach, really wants to do but they don’t have a lot of options.

Athanasiou has very solid underlying numbers like controlled zone entries and exits but he’s more of a shooter than a true playmaker. Does he continue his shot-heavy ways, or does he expand his game to be a true all-around center? It’ll be fascinating to watch. He could have relevance in 12-teamers now but as a late-round flier and not someone necessarily to target. (aug28)
