I had a wild crazy idea* to make a quilt of one of the Sanborn maps of my dissertation site. Because sure. Why not. So now I’ve planned the blocks and now I need to decide how much embroidery I want to do. Because I want to outline all the houses and maybe the drugstores? I’m worried doing all the street names will get wonky.

Chapter 3

You woke up with a kink in your neck from falling asleep in the window seat. It was a comfortable place to read and sit but not one to sleep. And you could feel the effects your body had after the last two days, you were sore and aching in a way you never knew was possible. You struggled to get up and walk back to your room to grab your datapad. There was a new message in the inbox from your husband.

Princess Ren,

Today a droid will deliver a pill to you. Take it. I was aware that you were not on any sort of birth control when we married, and this will rectify any possible problems from our last two rendezvous. That same droid will also implant a device into your arm to prevent any accidental pregnancies from happening.

I am aware that you will need to produce an heir for your star system at some point, but for now I require you to remain childless. We will have a further discussion in the future on how we are to go about this.

You are also expected not to leave the chambers without my permission. This will give you plenty of time to learn about the First Order. I will inform you when I am to be back, at my earliest convenience.

So he was going to keep you infertile until he needed you to be pregnant. Now you didn’t have a possible excuse to escape his needs. You were going to be forever trapped in a cycle with him, but at least you had a week to be away from him.

You ordered yourself breakfast as you scrolled through your ‘learning’ material. All of it seemed to be some sort of propaganda that the First Order fed to its citizens and ‘troopers. You had been eating and reading for a bit before you heard an alert at the door. You answered it, and in came a small flying black droid. The one that would give you the pill and the device.

It prompted you to sit in one of the chairs as it dispensed the pill and a small glass of water for you to take it with. Then came the insertion of the device. It prompted you to hold out your non-dominant arm which you compiled as you watched it inject you with a local anesthetic. You watched as it effortlessly sliced a small line into your arm and inserted the device. And then it applied you with a layer of bacta and a bandage. Once it was finished it gave out a happy trill sound before it left you completely alone once more.

You sat in the chair for a while, thinking about your future, or rather the lack of it thereof. You were to be his wife, but not just that, you were to warm his bed whenever he saw fit; you were to obey his commands and stay isolated in your chambers, only coming out whenever he approved of it. In many ways you felt like a concubine, the only real difference was the ring on your finger and the last name you had taken.

You had no future without him, but with him you had no future of your own. You were bound to him, now for eternity and there was nothing you could do about it. Especially because it might come as a cost to your people. Your freedom for theirs. ‘Your duty was to the crown and its people.’ He was now the future crown, someone you would have to obey always.

The next few days came and went with a blur. You had tried to make a regular schedule of getting up, having breakfast, daily hygiene, learning, and some light exercise. You were grateful that the main living space was large; it meant that you could walk in a large circle around the room. There really was little for you to do, you had tried to order just ingredients through the datapad but the authorization was denied. You needed to ask your husband directly to approve it and according to the message center he was offline all week.

So here you were a day before he was supposed to return bored out of your mind. In your pacing you had accidentally hit the entry button to your husband’s room with your arm. It made a loud error sound. Curiosity killed the cat, so you actually placed your hand against the sensor and it repeated the sound. So now you knew that you were not allowed access to his room, but he was allowed access to yours.

Fitting.

Today you tried to entertain yourself with some videos on the holonet but nothing seemed to be working. Nothing at all. You had been basically isolated for the past week with your only contact being that of the droids that delivered your food. You were lonely, and by all accounts you missed your husband, because even if he didn’t treat you like another human being he was at least one himself. But that seemed to be all that you could say about him.

You heard your datapad ping with a message alert. It was Kylo.

That hour did not give you much time to prepare. But why did you really need to prepare? He hadn’t given you any orders to be properly dressed for him. Or really do anything for that matter. But you decided to do it anyway, you weren’t ready to try to test the boundaries yet, so you got ready. By the time you were done and had exited your room you had a few seconds before he came barging in.

You were two steps out your door, as he crowded into your space pushing you back into the bedroom. You could see his robes were dirty and singed, he smelled as if he had gotten off straight from the battlefield. You were pretty sure that there was probably blood on his robes too as he shoved you down onto the bed. Like the kitchen before he left, he did not strip you; he did not face you; he was going to take you from behind.

Although this time he wasn’t going to bind your wrists, it seemed like he didn’t even have enough patience for that. Your skirt was hiked up, underwear once again ripped off as he quickly sheathed a full gloved finger inside of you. Still in the towel you clenched it around you, although it really wouldn’t do you much good as he has already seen you naked, and could request you as such any time.

He leaned down to your level, his masked face inches away from yours. You could see your breath fog up the black steel. It was like staring down the most dangerous predator in the galaxy. He brought his hand up to yank the towel away, leaving you exposed to him. His hand trailed down your body, the leather causing goosebumps along your skin. He trailed down to your pelvis, his hand dipping between your thighs. You could feel his fingers tentatively tease your folds, before he plunged his middle finger into you before he forcefully used his thumb against your crotch, pushing your canal forward. Worldbuilding - Food and Recipes

Culture of Food

Food is a huge part of what makes a culture and Verdant is no exception to this. They pride themselves as a nation in which no one goes hungry. In a country where most of the land is desert, this is much more difficult to achieve than one might think. But thought centuries of trial and error they have not only learned to take advantage of the county which the land provided, but to cultivate their own food by utilizing the unique seasons to their advantage.

Verdant food is colorful, packed with flavor, and prepared with passion. The hearth is the center of the household and as such the kitchen and living area are usually inseparable in all but the most wealthy estates. Something is always cooking, and as such it is considered polite to offer an unexpected guest food and drink, and considered very impolite to refuse! If invited over, it is an absolute scandal not to bring something along, even if it's just goat cheese rolled in garlic and chives or a bottle of homemade wine.

Accessibility

When one looks at the scope of what the people of Verdant eat, it is important to remember the wide range of territory in which their nation covers. For instance in the capitol city which straddles the coastline, the bounty of the sea is plentiful. This means that people in the capitol can obtain fresh fish, seaweed and such for next to nothing. However in the further reaches, such as the Speckled Pond Oasis, their ability to serve food like swordfish or lobster is severely limited.

As in all countries, the wealthy always have access to more than those in lower classes. The more processed or refined something is the more likely you have to be wealthy in order to afford it. The more elaborate and time consuming it is to obtain and cook, the more likely you must have thralls or servants available in order to ensure it gets accomplished. Domestic pigs, for instance, do not do well in the Verdant heat and are difficult to keep content. So much so that pigs are considered to be a status symbol and kept like very spoiled pets by the super wealthy and socially elite. Goats and chickens on the other hand are a much more common source of sustenance and can be obtained by all but the most impoverished folk. Even then, foraging and trapping is a common chore given to children. Verdant has only a few laws regarding hunting practices, allowing for easier access to food sources.

Preservation

Food must be properly preserved to last as long as possible. With a flooding season and a sandstorm season to factor into the equation, Verdant folk must ensure their larder will hold for as long as possible. Most meat is cured in salt or smoked to prolong it's shelf life. Jerked meats are fairly common, especially among the working class. Packing in animal fat and storing it in a cool, dry place is an excellent method for ensuring the meat remains tender for months. Herbs are air dried and ground into powders,or drowned in oil or vinegar. Fruits and vegetables are often pickled or soaked in a sweet brine which is often then turned into alcohol. Waste is the enemy, and if anything can be used it will be used. Bone broths are immensely popular as a method for stripping the most nutrition out of an animal.

Household Staples

Some things are just a ubiquitous part of the culture, and Verdant is no exception. There are staples served on every table from rich to poor, though the amount and embellishments may differ. As a part of their initiative to ensure everyone is fed, monthly stipends of grain and rice are provided to the poorer districts, the amount depending upon the size of the family. These come from the silos kept by the Queen's government, which are filled through yearly taxes collected at harvest time. Each meal has rice with herbs, pickled vegetables, and flatbread lightly fried in oil. The most popular dish through out all the nation being a saffron crispy-rice cakes. They keep well and can be stored in cloth and reheated for meals or handed off to a worker to take with them for mid-day meals.

Saffron Crispy-rice Cake

Ingredients 2 cups basmati rice 3 ½ cups water 2 tablespoons kosher salt ¼  teaspoon crushed saffron threads 1 cup plain yogurt 3 eggs 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted ½  cup olive oil 1 cup vegetable oil

Instructions

Put your rice in a bowl with enough water to cover and let soak for about 30 mins. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear. Place 3 ½ cups water into a large pot and add a generous sprinkle of kosher salt. Bring to a boil and add the drained basmati rice. Bring to a boil and give it a stir. Reduce heat and let cook till tender. Sprinkle small amount of salt and saffron threads in mortar and crunch until powdered. Add 2 tbsp hot water and stir lightly. Let steep for about ten mins until deep reddish-orange color.

Mix 3 egg yolks, yogurt, ½ cup olive oil, and 2 tbsp salt into large bowl. Add saffron mix when steeping is done.

Pour 1 cup vegetable oil into skillet and heat. Fluff basmati rice mixture and test to see if fully cooked. Slowly integrate it into the saffron mixture until every grain is thoroughly coated. Don't skimp! You want it to be saturated with this mixture.

Once your oil is hot, put in a small bit of rice to test and see if it is ready. If it begins to bubble immediately, you are ready to proceed!  Form the saffron and rice mixture into patties with you hands and carefully place in skillet, frying on each side until golden brown. Remove from skillet and place on rack to drain. Serve with choice of topping.

Note: I have personally made this recipe and let me tell you it packs a LOT of flavor. I've put a fried egg on top, mixed it with sweet coleslaw, tossed it with chicken and even put a thick slice of mozzarella on top and stuck it under a broiler until bubbling! It's addictive and it keeps in the fridge forever! The saffron threads are a little bit pricy, $7.99 for 1 tblsp where I got them. But since it made like five meals it was worth it.

Another staple of the Verdant meal is flatbread with garlic oil drizzled over it. The garlic oil is easy enough to make by chopping and frying large amounts of garlic in copious amounts of oil, then straining. The oil is useful for just about every dish in Verdant and is used liberally. The chips are kept and dried out, then ground as a topping or crusting for meals.

Garlic Flatbread

Ingredients ½ cup warm water 1 teaspoon sugar 1 package dry active yeast (2 1/4th tsp) ¼ cup plain yogurt 2 cups bread flour ¼cup garlic oil 2 tbsp crushed garlic chips 1 teaspoon kosher salt fresh parsley

Instructions

Dissolve sugar in ½ cup of warm water and add yeast to mixture. Leave for 10 mins until the yeast begins to foam.

Mix flour and salt together. Slowly incorporate yogurt until you have a loose, flaky dough.

Add yeast mixture and knead thoroughly until smooth. Place in a bowl and drizzle generously with garlic oil. Cover with a plate for about an hour or until doubled in size.

Lightly dust flat surface and pour dough onto surface. Gently shape into rectangle and cut into 8 pieces. Form each piece into a ball. Arrange on plate and cover for another 15 – 20 mins.

Place skillet on stove top and add 4 tbsp olive oil to pan.

For larger flatbread, roll balls on floured surface until about 1/8 inch thick. For smaller, cut each ball in half and roll till about the length and width of your hand. Add flatbread to hot skillet and fry on both sides. One side will puff up, creating bubbles of air. Once you flip, DO NOT PRESS FLAT! Cook until golden brown around bubble rings and transfer to rack. Once finished, arrange flatbread on plate and give a drizzle with garlic oil. Add sprinkling of salt, garlic chips and parsley and serve.

Note:These are spectacular on their own but tbh I love them with some goat cheese and some of the broken up saffron cakes above. You can also do them sans garlic/salt/parsley and heat one up in the oven before smearing it with blackberry preserves. It's chewy and lightly crispy and just so satisfying to eat.

The pickled vegetables may very day to day depending upon availability. Children are typically sent out as soon as they have eaten to go forage for wild edibles which can be added in to make for a more hearty fare. Knowing how to source edible plants from their environment is a necessity, as it may save their lives during the Trials needed to become a Citizen.

Sweet Pickled Vegetables

Ingredients 1 Eggplant 1 Cucumber 1 Carrots 1 Red Cabbage 1 Leek 1 Squash 1/4th  tsp salt 1/4th tsp ground pepper 1/4th  cup Olive oil 1 Red oranges 2 tbsp Brown sugar Optional: Pine nuts Goat cheese

Instructions

Turn oven on to 400°.

Slice your eggplants,squash, and leeks into widths about the size of your pinkie finger. Toss in drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper and place on baking tray. Place in oven for 20 mins or until cooked through. Chop cucumbers, red cabbage and grate carrots into large bowl. Mix to combine.

Take 1/4th cup olive oil and add 2 tbs brown sugar. Juice one red orange and add juice to mixture. Stir to combine until sugar is dissolved.

Once roasted veggies are thoroughly cooked, turn on broiler and roast till lightly browned. Keep a close eye on them. Broilers work quicker than you think.

Once browned, remove from oven and allow to come to room temp. Mix in with rest of vegetables and drizzle the orange dressing over top. Mix generously.

Top with pine nuts and crumbled goat cheese for an extra burst of flavor.

Note: You can really serve this at room temp like a warm salad but it's just as good second day as like a slaw. I love to add it onto rice and chicken for a lunch bowl.

One of the easiest sources for protein across Verdant is the ocean and all the bounty it provides. Even if one doesn't have a boat, they can search along the rocky beaches for mussels and dig into the sand for cockles. Just about everyone has a trap for crabs or eels and takes advantage of this as they taste wonderful when grilled. Spearfishing and diving for urchins are popular methods for obtaining harder to catch food sources. However under Guild law, anything which requires a boat in order to catch requires a Guild permit.

Mussels with Leeks & Tomatos

Ingrdiants 1 lb mussels 1/4th cup olive oil 1 Leek 6 Garlic cloves 1 cup Multicolored cherry tomatoes ½ Red onion 1 tbsp Ginger 1 Lemon 1/4th tsp salt 1/4th tsp pepper ½ tsp cayenne pepper

Instructions

*Check your mussels thoroughly before use!

-rinse thoroughly

-trash any cracked or opened mussels

-if you find a 'thread' on the mussel, remove it

Take a deep saute pan and add in olive oil.

Thoroughly clean leeks between the leaves. They're noted for being dirty.

Chop leeks, red onion, garlic cloves and tomatoes. Add to hot olive oil and cook till lightly browned.

Add in your mussels and cover with lid. Steam for 10 – 15 min until all the mussels have opened up. Stir gently to combine.

Juice 1 lemon and grate 1 tsbp lemon. Stir together with cayenne, salt and pepper until combined.

Scoop mussels from pan into large bowl. Pour lemon juice onto mussels while stirring. Serve.

Note: Mussels are one of my favorite things to eat! There really is no end to the different things you can combine to them but sometimes the simplest is the best!

Framing has begun!

Stopped by the site last weekend and got to see the beginning of the framing process!

Here’s the driveway (above) with a bunch of framing material waiting to be nailed into place, and beyond you can see our new bedroom and bathroom addition!  The window opening on the left will be the bathroom (small toilet room area), and the two windows on the right are our bedroom.

At the corners you can see our Simpson Stongwalls - structural steel used to stiffen the north façade framing that is mostly window openings.  You can also see that only 1 top plate has been added so far.  Once they add the second top plate the top of the wall will align with the top of the large header over the center window and everything will be strapped together.

You can see the hold downs bolted through the strongwall base and the sill plate framing.  The sill plates (bottom pieces of wood on the concrete slab) are pressure treated wood (looks green) to avoid water and rot issues where the wood framing is most susceptible to water intrusion.

Here you have Brett (and I) critiquing the less than stellar concrete skills of our contractor.  Not to mention his sweet tall socks with the shorts (LOL), yes I married him for his keen eye for fashion... ahem I mean construction errors.  The concrete edge of our slab bows out toward the driveway and at the center point is about 1/2 inch proud of the sill plate, but it aligns at the corners.  Yes we are perfectionists in our work... but even more so when it’s our house!  Meanwhile I am also wondering how the hell we are going to be able to plant anything between our addition and the driveway??  Our design left room for an approximately 30″ wide planting strip between the addition and the driveway.  BUT the contractor poured the large footings for the strongwall at this corner (that thing he’s standing on) just about level with the top of the driveway!  Last time I checked, you can’t grow anything in a concrete footing.  And we didn’t construct this addition to allow a raised planter against the wall... I guess I’ll be stuck with potted plants here and I’m not pleased.  I also don’t know how they are going to pour the new walkway up to our porch when this blob of footing concrete is about level with where that walk needs to be.  The contractor is likely going to have to chip some of this concrete out of there to do it right... ugh!

Here’s the back addition (above) - they had not started framing that area yet when we visited, but they have taken the back wall and part of the roof off.  The rest of that roof on the right side needs to be removed to get rid of the dutch-gable and will be re-framed with a standard gable to facilitate our vaulted ceiling in the great room.

Above you can see the recess in the new slab where it meets our existing slab.  This recess is for the new sliding door track!

Here’s a sample piece of that track in the recess.  Once all the flooring is installed, all you will see will be less than a 1/4-inch tall section of the top silver part of the track, and the base will be buried below.  They better set that track more level than they poured that recess...  We paid $250 for this recess as a part of change order #2... Looking at how uneven it is, I’m thinking we were overcharged!  

We did argue with our contractor about some items in change order #2: he was trying to double charge us for structural items that were in our permit set and the plans showing those items were sent to him prior to his first bid.  It was super annoying to argue this with him... lots of #rantsbybrett were endured by all!  During our meeting with the contractor I had to shush the ranting husband so that I could talk reasonably with contractor about how he was completely wrong... but you know, in a professional way.  Then we had to send a bunch more emails proving our case which was totally BS because the structural items were in the bid set and the permit set!  If this change order went to court, 10 times out of 10 we would have been declared right!  I even got personally offended that the contractor tried to sick his admin lady on me to try to get me to back down... as if I’m a push over - think again! HA!  Their only argument was, “none of our other home owners contest our change orders.”  Uhhh... then your other home owners are idiots!  We are architects AND it’s our money we’re talking about here so he better bring a better excuse than that if you want us to pay.  He finally agreed to revise the change order after I bitched that we are paying them hundreds of thousands of dollars and they are trying to argue about a couple grand, and furthermore, we are spending far too much of our valuable time even arguing about this item that seems pretty clear.  Very frustrating. 

Above you can see where they demolished the front door wall that had that funky plumbing pipe that was going at a 45-degree angle through the framing of the wall.  Our new front door will be in the same location, but we are raising the header over the door all the way up to the underside of the rafters and that will allow us to have an 8′ tall front door!  The door will be centered on the front porch with an operable side light on either side.  The roof over the porch is getting removed and re-framed for a 10′ tall ceiling above the porch.  So that beam with the white paint being supported by a another piece of wood, sitting on another scrap block of wood on the ground is all going away!

It was admittedly a little scary to walk around the house in this condition because structurally some items are not really braced at the moment in their temp condition... we were very cautious not to touch anything and I mentioned that if I felt an earthquake I was going to run for it!

We are both really disappointed that our contractor is trying to charge us for ticky-tacky shit that we have to argue against!  We didn’t think we hired the “Change Order Contractor” but it’s starting to look that way... ugh!  We are already arguing about change order #3 as well. 

He’s trying to charge us an extra $4,270.50 to replace our 60 year old sewer line from the front porch to the street.  This scope of work was clearly requested by us in our first bid addendum that we sent the contractor a month before his final bid.  In the final project budget there is even a $4,400 line item #1300 that verbatim states, “Replace Main Water Line and Sewer Line Will be going as far as we can to the city hookup.”  Again we argued that he is trying to double charge us for this scope that was clearly requested in the bid documents and shown in the budget!  I asked for him to tell us what the budget line item #1300 is for if it’s not the sewer and water line replacement and he tried to tell us some horseshit that it’s for replacing the sewer and water lines inside the house.  I called BS on that immediately and reminded him that the plumbing scope inside the house is covered in the $21,000 line item for rough plumbing!!  We are still waiting on his revised argument for why he needs to double the cost to replace the sewer line?  I know we are getting all heated about this... but if he had come to us and said that he forgot to bid the excavation for the new sewer line, or that he needs a change order because the sewer line is deeper than he though we would be able to agree or meet him in the middle.  I mean we are not unreasonable.  But don’t lie to me that sewer replacement isn’t in your bid... you will not win that argument and instead he’s just pissing us both off!  Not to mention, who the hell bids replacement of a sewer pipe and doesn’t include the cost to dig it up?  If this was a commercial construction project the contractor would have to eat that cost he “forgot” to bid.  How would we even know that it wasn’t included when we reviewed his bid?  Brett already just wants to hire another contractor to replace our sewer line after our contractor is done so he doesn’t have to pay our contractor another dime over our budget.  If the contractor keeps being a prick this might happen, but I’m not willing to burn that bridge yet... I’m still hoping that the contractor comes to his senses.

Then there’s the lovely change order #4!  Apparently our contractor only bid the removal and re-sheeting of half of our roof?!?!  Did he know we were planning to re-roof the whole thing... yes!  Did his bid state he was planning to leave half the existing roof in place... no!  BUT since we are having Brett’s Dad, who has owned his own roofing business for the past 40 years, install our new roof we agreed to the change order just because we don’t want to do the tear off ourselves.  Cha-ching... extra $4,130 there... smh!  

We don’t like arguing.  It’s not a fun or comfortable thing to be doing with a contractor that still has 80% of the project to finish.  Maybe we won the argument for change order #2 (which isn’t really a win when those structural items should never have been a change order in the first place), but now we are concerned that the contractor is going to try to make that money back on future changes or cut corners to make up the perceived “difference.”  We are already 2+ weeks behind schedule and our contract doesn’t have a lot of teeth to compel our contractor to finish by a certain date.  Not to mention that we still don’t even have a fucking schedule for the duration of the project!  Here we are 2 months into a supposedly 6 month project and all he can give us is a 4-week look ahead... ugh!  Lots of stress and frustration happening in our house these last couple weeks.  Time for a drink!

Your Light in the Mist - Chapter 52

Tom and I were able to spend just over two weeks together alone with Henry, and we’d quickly become a well-oiled machine. It was seamless, really…which made me wonder how I was going to function when he left on March 1st for Kong promo. I cried, and so did Tom as he was leaving, a puzzled Henry in my arms looking back and forth between us during our final hug goodbye. He’d be returning to London on the 13th, and I made sure to cross every single day off on the calendar before I ate breakfast because nothing makes you lose track of time more than when you’re caring for an infant while thoroughly sleep deprived and missing your partner so badly it actually aches.

All in all I thought I was handling things well, though there were days when breakfast was the only real meal I ate and showering was such a rare and special treat that if I actually took one two days in a row I almost felt guilty. There was one day I managed to shower and eat three meals within a 24-hour period and man, I felt like I’d conquered the Kingdom of Domesticity, lemme tell ya. Alongside the chaos and the exhaustion, though, there were countless moments of joy and discovery as Henry and I got to know each other as separate entities. I’d already begun naming objects during playtime and while flipping through picture books, and, honestly, I blathered on with such constancy that I figured the first discernible sound he’d make would be ‘shh’. Every night we’d sit together in the nursery room rocker and I’d read to him, mostly rudimentary level children’s stories. Skippyjon Jones always seemed to get him amped up the most, his little arms waving as I voiced each character accordingly, sometimes to the point where I’d be laughing too hard to continue. And, of course, I sang. I sang when he was fussy, which wasn’t often, I sang when I changed his diapers, I sang during bath time, I sang when he nursed, and I sang as I rocked him to sleep. Actual songs, songs I made up on the fly, lullabies, humming classical tunes…he appeared to enjoy it, and the day before Tom was due home he flashed me a great big gummy smile from his bouncy seat when I added dancing to my rendition of Melanie’s ‘Brand New Key’. Despite all official guidance suggesting babies were only capable of smiling reflexively until they were nearly at the the two-month-old mark or later, Henry’s was genuine. I know this because I spent a good portion of that particular day testing my theory, and every time I sang that damn song and danced like a fool, there it was. I thought about Skyping Tom in order to share my super-scientific findings, but decided it was only one more day until he’d be able to see it in person…also, I was dying to see what would happen if he sang it and danced as well.

Tom’s flight was scheduled to land at six PM, which meant he’d probably be rolling in around seven-thirty at the earliest. Henry typically nursed every two or three hours, sleeping in between at nighttime and napping here and there during the day. That evening I’d tucked him in at six-thirty and turned on the baby monitor, fully intending to squeeze in a snack and a shower before Tom got home, but then I made the grievous error of sitting down in the rocker for a brief spell just to make sure that Henry was really and truly out before I left the room, because I’d learned the hard way that sometimes he’d pop awake. Nothing like having shampoo in your hair when your kiddo starts crying in the adjoining room, you know?

I must have dozed off immediately, because the next thing I knew I was dreaming that Tom was saying my name, and the dream was so vivid that I could actually feel his hand on my shoulder, shaking me gently. Dream me tipped her head to the left to nuzzle dream Tom’s hand, and when the fingers of the hand grasped the back of my neck and the thumb stroked the magic spot behind my ear I inhaled sharply, catching his scent as I did so. My eyes flew open, and there he was, sitting on the ottoman in front of me. I reached up to grab his wrist, finding it warm to the touch which reassured me that I hadn’t lost my damn mind. After I slipped my arms into the robe, Tom handed me the T-shirt he’d been wearing so I could clean up. “Here you are, my love. I’m going to grab a pair of shorts…can you wait for me?”  

Nodding, I did a brisk mop-job, dropped the T-shirt back onto the floor, then tied the belt loosely in place. We held hands as we walked to the nursery, but I fell back and let go once we we entered in order to allow Tom to lead the way. Henry’s whimpering had evolved into what I liked to call the Universal Baby Siren Wail, and as Tom first approached then leaned into the crib, I hustled to find a vantage point from where I’d have the best view of both of them. Tom reached down to move the Pooh quilt aside, then rested his hand on Henry’s torso.

“Hey now, baby boy. It’s all right. We’re here.” He slipped his other hand underneath Henry to support his head, then shifted the hand that had been on his torso under his bum, lifting and holding him out directly in front of him, then turning him sideways to cradle him against his upper chest. “Shh, shh, we’re here.”

Henry quieted immediately, eyes un-squinching, then opening widely as he fully realized that someone other than the food-giver was holding him. Tom’s megawatt smile broke out across his face, and when Henry smiled in return I damn near died right then and there. Tom’s mouth dropped open, his head turning toward me so fast that whiplash was an actual concern.

“Maude, he smiled. Did you see? He smiled at me. I mean, I think he smiled at me. Perhaps it’s just gas or…”

“Oh, it’s not gas. He smiles. And he totally just smiled at you, the little bugger.” I moved closer to my dudes and slipped my arm around Tom’s waist. “It started yesterday, but he only does it for me when I put on a show for him.” It had crossed my mind to keep that bit of info to myself because I didn’t want him to feel as if he’d missed out on something, but I knew there would without a doubt be firsts either he or I would miss along the way,  because children develop at such a rapid pace all you have to do is be looking in the wrong direction for a second and that’s that. It initially appeared that Tom seemed thoroughly unaffected by my statement, however, and returned his focus to Henry.

“Henry, that was quite a spectacular smile. It’s made Daddy feel very, very special. Thank you. I missed you so much while I was gone, and I want to keep you all to myself but I know you’re hungry, so here’s Mamma, all right?” He passed him to me, and I headed over to the rocker, pausing before I sat down when I felt Tom’s hand on my shoulder. I turned to look at him, and he smiled bashfully as he spoke.

“Would you mind if I sat with you? Or if there’s not enough space would you consider sitting on my lap while you nurse him? I…I’d like to be close to both of you.”

I smiled back. “Sitting on your lap sounds like perfection. Park that pretty ass, Tom.”

He complied, and I lowered myself carefully into place, resting semi-sideways. He wrapped his right arm around me to serve as support, his hand grasping my hip, fingers splayed. We remained silent until I’d burped Henry for the second time and Tom began to rock us all forward and back slowly. He spoke, voice hushed so Henry’s attempting to doze off wouldn’t be disturbed.

“I knew it was possible…likely, even…that certain milestones in his development might occur in my absence. And I’m aware that such moments are fleeting, even if I happen to be nearby. But having it actually happen the first time out of the gate…well…we’ve yet to discuss it, though I’ve been thinking about it quite a bit, and I don’t know how much consideration you’ve given to it, if any, because lord knows you’ve been busy here on the frontlines all alone, but...where do you see us, going forward, in regard to our occupational statuses?”

While I hadn’t committed to anything, my plan while pregnant had been to take twelve weeks off, then return to work at Prosper at least three days a week and continue to be the Great and Powerful OZ behind the curtain for Manageall. But those weeks, man, they were whipping by at warp speed. The few instances so far wherein I’d needed to handle urgent business issues despite being on leave had been atypically stressful, and that had given me pause, though I was onto the next task at hand so rapidly there was no thorough evaluation as to whether or not I wanted to proceed as planned or rework it all lock, stock and barrel. I shook my head.

“I thought I had the answer for that…there was a plan, you know? But honestly, Tom…now…I’m kind of questioning, like, everything. Which I did not expect.” Glancing down at the beautiful, now soundly sleeping, being in my arms, I shifted my legs forward, then stood. “Welp, someone’s out cold. Let’s tuck him in and adjourn to the bedroom once again so we can speak at normal people volume. Before you comment, let me rephrase – normal Maude volume.”

He chuckled, and both of us whispered our good-nights to Henry, then returned to our marital bed, this time remaining mostly vertical instead of horizontal. We sat, side by side, each waiting for the other to start until I elbowed Tom in the ribs.

“You’re the one who mentioned it, so it only seems fair that you should go first.” He inhaled deeply, then exhaled slowly, and I reached out and grabbed his knee. “Thomas. I understand. It’s all good. You’re my partner, I love you, and I’ll support whatever choice you decide to make.”

He placed his hand atop mine. “God, how I love you. Thank you for that. All right. Out with it. Here’s what I’m thinking…for the remainder of this year, I’ve got Early Man to finish up, a very short shoot for the next two Avengers films, then Ragnarok promo. All the Early Man stuff will take place in a studio within driving distance, so while I’ll be working, I won’t have to be out of town. Avengers won’t take more than a few days, but Ragnarok promo…that’s another story, and though it’s unavoidable, it’s not until late fall so there’s a nice span of time during which I’ll be able to remain in London. Early next year I’ll have Early Man promo, then Avengers promo, and since the format of the Vampire Chronicles has been switched from a cinematic release to a streaming series filming has been pushed back until 2019 at the earliest. So, my schedule for the foreseeable future is relatively clear. And…other than possibly entertaining a London-only stage production…I’d like to keep it that way. I want to spend every moment I can here, at home, with you and Henry, until he’s old enough to travel easily. Though honestly, I’m not even sure about that anymore. There are several aspects other than my personal preference to be considered, however. How will this affect us financially? How will this impact my career? And finally, how does this fit with your line of thinking, if at all?”

“Let’s address my line of thinking, then the rest, because it’s all relative. I like working. I can’t see myself not doing some sort of work. And I think you’re the same with your work, with acting. It’s a significant component of who you are, at your core. For me, while I’m really, really good at PR, if I do say so myself…” He snorted, and I shrugged. “Like Peggy Carter says, I know my value. Anyway. I’m skilled at it,  but it’s not my passion. It’s never been. Coding and design…those are my passions. PR is just…work. Bear in mind that if Manageall had never happened I would not be considering this, but…I don’t see myself returning to Prosper other than as an outside consultant. The staff has become well-versed in how to handle social media and instructing clients, which renders me non-essential in that realm. Where I can be of benefit is on the front lines…however, that position is very taxing from an emotional standpoint…and, let’s face it, the entire industry is kind of soul-sucking. I could handle it, before…no problemo, dude. But now that we have a kiddo, I feel compelled to reserve as much of myself for him as I possibly can. And, bottom line from a purely financial standpoint, my earning potential when working at coding and designing is far greater than in the PR world. It’s work that offers nearly complete flexibility in regard to time and location. I want to begin to pursue…slowly… developing and improving Manageall. I want to see how far it can go, and, eventually, I want to explore other projects. Mainly apps. Apps. I want to create and design apps. Wow, that’s quite the revelation right there, and fuck, I really feel like a ginormous turd for essentially bailing on Luke for the most part, but I have to be honest with myself and honest with you and the truth is…the thing that’s most important to me right now and probably will be forever or at least until he’s an adult with a life and stuff but then, grandbabies…fuck me, that’s nuts…anyway…the most important thing is Tom and Maude and Henry being…together. Long story short, we’re in excellent financial shape and could live a perfectly lovely life if neither of us ever worked again, you know that, I know that, and I’m incredibly grateful for that, and time is the enemy, and after all we’ve been through, why the fuck not step back a bit so we can enjoy our son, and each other? Oh, your career. Forgot that part. Will there be an impact? Yes. Will you be able to jump back in at full speed whenever you want? Technically, yes, though it may take a little time if you’re way off the public radar. Is there any guarantee that you’ll ever enjoy the level of notoriety you have right now? No. Will that impact your earning potential? Entirely possible. How does that make you feel? How does everything else contained the verbal version of explosive diarrhea that you just listened to me spew make you feel, other than wicked sorry you asked for my opinion?”

He snorted. “I asked, and I received…not at all sorry. Exhausted, perhaps, but not sorry.” Sobering, he stared down at the floor for a moment, then looked up and turned his head toward me. “I came across an article a few years back…a list of the biggest regrets expressed by patients in hospice. At the top were working too much, and not spending more time with family. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, now…we all have two lives. The second one starts when we realize that we only have one. Throughout that one, our priorities change as we live, love, and grow, but the constant is time. The sand is flowing ever-downward through the hourglass and there’s no stopping it. Time is, as you just said, is the enemy. At the end of my time on this plane of existence I don’t want to find myself staring in the rearview at the life behind me with words of regret upon my lips. I want to be replaying all the moments of beauty and joy I experienced with the people I loved, finding peace in knowing that even if I were able, I wouldn’t change a blessed thing. The path to that is clear…Tom and Maude and Henry being together, as often as humanly possible.”

He paused, and just as I was about to wrap my arms around him, he smirked, then grinned mischievously. I cocked my head to the side, left eyebrow raised. “You’re totally thinking about that first day on the beach when you said you wanted to know me and I said biblically and you said…”

“…as often as humanly possible. Yes, Maude, yes I am. That was quite a day, was it not?”

I nodded. “That it was. Mind-blowingly strange and spectacular. And though there’ve been so many ‘best day evers’ since…without that one, none of them would have happened. Thus, I’m inclined to delegate it as the most important best day ever.”

He reached for me, the sides of his hands resting on my collarbones as his fingers stroked my neck and his thumbs brushed my jawline and cheeks. “I concur, my light in the mist.” He kissed me, feather-light at first, then firmer, finally sucking my lower lip into his mouth and doing the thing…with the result exactly as expected.

My thighs were still clenching as I spoke. “Thomas William Hiddleston…first of all, how dare you. Second of all…HOW DARE YOU?!”

He laughed loudly, releasing me to raise his hands up as if he were praising the god of his choice, then rotating his wrists and turning his palms skyward. “Still makes me feel like a fucking rock star.”

I reached out to pinch his nipples. “As a reward, the rock star will be given the honor of changing the next diaper. If he can handle it.”

Nodding, he wrapped his arms around me and began pushing me backward onto the bed. “He can. But he’s going to handle you first, if you can, you know…handle him handling you. Again.”

“She can handle him handling her again a few times, probably.” With that, Henry began crying again, and we both rose quickly to our feet. I poked his bicep. “I regret to inform you that there’s been a sudden but not entirely unexpected modification to the handling schedule. You’re needed at the north stage immediately, Rock Star. The woman will have to wait her turn.”

He linked his arm with mine as we walked though the bedroom door and into the nursery. “Well, I hope she won’t mind too much.”

I shook my head. “She won’t. You’re worth it.”

He kissed my cheek as we reached Henry’s crib. “So are you, my Maude. So are you.”

After Tom fulfilled his doody duties, which I figured would be the case because Henry typically didn’t wake up when he was only wet, I stood back and observed, attempting to absorb and retain even the most minute details of his interaction with our son. Kissing his little feet one at a time before placing them back into his footie sleeper, carefully closing the snaps, bending down to hold him against his chest as he lifted him from the changing table, breathing him in as he re-positioned him so his head rested upon his left shoulder. And then, he began to sing. So softly I couldn’t quite make out the words, but I knew the tune. And so I stepped forward to stand before him, and the words became clear.

I joined in after that verse, somehow managing to not dissolve in a puddle of tears after hearing my husband remixing our wedding song into a lullaby for our son.

As we finished, I found myself transfixed by the sight of Tom’s body rocking gently from side to side, and his fingers drawing small circles on the back of Henry’s sleeper. It was soft, 100% cotton, white with purple horizontal stripes and a powerful sense of deja vu overwhelmed me, though it escalated beyond ‘I’ve been here before’ quickly and transformed into glimpse of the future, similar to the dream I’d had immediately prior to waking up on the day of our public wedding ceremony…Tom and I, three children, brief instances throughout time, the moments occurring in various places, with one thing in common…all of us, together. A vision of myself, looking downward at hands that were starting to wrinkle, holding the sleeper Henry was wearing in the here and now, then passing it to someone, into the hands of a younger man, his face blurry, but his hair very clearly black, and I could hear voices around me speaking, Tom’s being the only one I recognized. Though I wasn’t able to make out the words, I could feel the joy emanating from everyone around me, and from within me. A vignette that, whether it turned out to be real or imaginary, imparted upon me a sense of finality. Not an ending, just a bookmark in the story of my life’s adventure for this year, this day, and this hour, when I could see the purpose of the past and the promise of the future and recognize that I was precisely exactly where I was always meant to be. Tom quietly asking if I was all right snapped me back to the present, and I looked up to see those blue eyes gazing back at me, eyes in which I’d seen darkness and light and everything in between, eyes that were indeed a mirror, a reflection of the soul housed within that had called to mine so strongly, so loudly, across time and space, until, finally, the hand of the universe had been forced to relent and bring us together. I grinned, nodding in the affirmative, my answer a single whispered word.

“Absofuckingloutely.”

one step forward, two steps back (v2.0) - 1

Way back when, last December, to be exact, I gifted a fic to @apparitionism for the B&W Secret Santa extravaganza. I'd threatened a second part, which is nearly ready to go, but before that I needed to do some housecleaning on the first story (thank you appy for pointing out issues.) So I'm starting over by posting an edited version of this story then moving on to a six chapter "part two" that fixes everything. I’ll be posting new chapters regularly, maybe every other day if I can mange, just to get this out of my system. 

NOTE: This story is an inbetweener - set after episode 4.8 “Second Chance” (the one when Mrs. F tells Helena to disappear with the astrolabe) but before 4.9 “The Ones We Love.”

As the loudspeaker crackles to life, Myka pushes herself up into sitting position and snuggles further into her coat. She glances to the side at Pete, still lying next to her, sprawled across three whole seats. He hasn’t moved an inch since she dozed off.

“Pete,” she says, more as a puff of air than a name.

No response.

“Pete,” she repeats, louder, adding a poke to the arm.

“Ggnah,” he grunts, flinching but holding his position.

“Get up. Our gate’s moved.”

“Fivemoreminutes,” he mumbles, pulling the hood of his jacket over his eyes.

“Fine,” she says through a yawn and stretches her neck to the left then right. “I’m going to go clean up. Be ready when I get back.” She shoots Pete a stern eye, but he’s already dozed off. She’ll wake him for real when she gets back.

She navigates out of the waiting area, past the meager breakfast options, thinking there better be better coffee by their new gate. Spying signs for the facilities, she strides towards the ladies but is thrown off by a hand grabbing her elbow. She's swept into the family restroom, and as the door slams shut, she spins around and pins her abductor to its back. She’s not in the mood for detour, nor a new mystery to solve, she really, really just wants to get home.

“We must stop meeting like this,” the woman chokes out, one hand tugging at Myka’s forearm, the other clicking the lock closed.

“H.G.?” Myka says, lowering her arm. “What are you doing here?"

Helena holds Myka’s gaze as she rubs her neck. Myka’s unsettled by the anxious look in her eyes.

“Are you ok? Where have you been? Why were you following us—“

Helena’s lips halt Myka's words, one hand tangling into thick curls, tugging her close. Seconds later, Helena pulls back, and Myka lists forward but is met by Helena’s forehead instead of her mouth.

"I’m meant to trust no one. No one at all. You cannot tell a soul you've seen me," Helena says, looking down at her hands, turning them over, flexing her fingers repeatedly. "Irene will be livid.”

Myka stiffens at the mention of Mrs. Frederic, her eyes following Helena as she paces the tiny room.

“I tried, you see, tried, but I can’t fix this on my own,” Helena says, muttering almost to herself.

“Fix what?” Myka asks but gets no response.

Helena examines her hands again as her steps become erratic.

"Fix what?" Myka repeats and steps into Helena's path.

Helena bumps into Myka and looks up, her eyes round and wild. Acting on impulse, Myka leans forward and presses her lips to Helena’s, just as Helena did before.

This time, the kiss lingers, and Myka's libido thrums awake. Helena soft, warm lips are full of everything she’s been missing since their glorious night together after Sykes. Her hands rise to circle Helena’s biceps, then skim down to her elbows, but Helena gently pushes her away.

“You got stuck. In your head. I thought kissing you might help.”

“If only that were the remedy,” Helena says, her lips curling up slowly at the ends. “One more for good measure couldn't hurt."

Myka smirks, crookedly, and walks Helena back, pinning her to the wall, palms pressing into tiles on either side of her head. She dips forward and kisses Helena, properly, lips squarely aligned, her arousal soaring as Helena presses their bodies together.

“Mykes, you in there?” Pete bellows, too few moments later.

Helena growls at the interruption and as Myka looks away, presses her lips into the twist of Myka's neck. Myka gasps at the pressure, head tilting instinctively towards Helena, Pete already forgotten about at the door.

“Mykes?”

“Don’t answer,” Helena grumbles, her breath exciting already sensitized skin.

“I know you're in there because I already checked the ladies.“

Myka looks towards the door, but Helena cups her jaw and guides her back, pressing her lips into tender spot behind Myka's ear.

“Listen, Artie’s on the line. We got a ping. He wants to talk to both of us—“

“Ow!” Myka yelps, her body collapsing forward, temple hitting the wall. “Why’d you do that?” she says, rubbing brow while looking around the room for Helena.

“You talkin' to me?” Pete asks.

"No," Myka answers, grimacing at Helena, now standing next to her scowling, arms crossed over her chest.

“Maybe I should come in there to, you know, avoid prying eyes?”

“Gimme a minute,” Myka says, taking a step back, squinting Helena. “How hard did I hit my head? You’re kinda...glowing.”

Helena clasps her hands in front of her and straightens her spine while breathing out a heavy sigh.

Myka's eyes widen as the gravity of the situation dawns on her.

“You see the issue—"

“Artie's getting waaay testy out here!” Pete says, rattling the door handle.

“I must go.”

“Helena, wait!” Myka lunges as Helena steps away, but her hand passes completely through her.

“Once this is resolved, I’ll look forward to further pleasantries, but for now..." Helena says, spinning around to face Myka. She bows humbly, then disappears through a solid wall.

After a grouchier than usual talk with Artie, Myka and Pete are rerouted to Schenectady to meet with a curator from the Museum of Science and Innovation. Myka half-listens as Pete takes the investigative lead; her mind caught up in solving Helena's predicament.

How can she fix an after-effect from the coin? Her first priority is to locate it, then neutralize it, because maybe it wasn't neutralized properly in the first place...

“So this Photophone,” she interjects when she senses Pete faltering, "it was a donation?”

“Yes. We think it's the original GE prototype, from the twenties,” the curator says and hands Myka a photo.

Myka glances at the image, then at the item in front of her. She stares at it for a long moment as if concentrating, but her thoughts slip back to the orb. What if it’s not at the Warehouse? What if the coin's being used again?

“Was it, like, missing stuff, when you stuck it together?” Pete says, elbowing Myka when she doesn’t continue.

“We recreated several parts.”

Myka raises a brow and Pete smiles.

“Can you show us the schematics and identify which pieces?”

“Sure. Follow me.”

After a lengthy pow wow with Claudia and a swift interview with the donor of the machine, it’s determined several boxes from the donation went in error to a charity shop instead of the museum. A quick visit to the drop off location reveals the boxes were sent to a sorting center, so after obtaining directions, Pete drives to a warehouse just off the highway.

"This place is massive,” Pete says as he pulls into the parking lot. "How are we going to find anything in there?”

“Maybe donations are sorted by date?” Myka says while exiting the car. Her confidence fades as she passes lumps of tarped goods lining the walkway to the building.

They flash their badges at the front desk, and the guard waves them through.

"Is there someone else we can ask for help?” Myka says.

"Nope. Weekend," he says, eyes barely leaving the moving image on his phone. "Place is yours. Knock yourselves out.”

They walk through a wide doorway lined with vertical plastic strips then out onto the main floor.

"This place is in-sane," Pete says as he scans the sea of boxes, bags, and furniture before them.

"Yeah," Myka says.

"At least we know it's a vase."

“It’s a horn."

"But the old lady kept flowers in it."

"It shapes sound, Pete. Here take the picture."

“Brass funnel?" Pete says, with a wink.

Myka rolls her eyes and gives him a push. “Let's split up. Yell if you find anything."

Pete gives a two finger salute then marches to the other side of the room.

Myka meanders in the opposite direction, sifting lightly through piles and jumps as her coat pocket vibrates. Her cell and her Farnsworth are in her jeans pockets, so she’s unsure of what it possibly could be.

She maneuvers the pocket, so it opens toward the floor and shakes it until something falls out. Recognizing the shape, she bends down to inspect it and sees a post-it attached, reading “Give to Claudia” in flowing script.

Her stomach sinks a little because of course, the kiss was for this…then again Helena probably panicked when she felt herself fading. But Helena’s lips against her neck, her hand resting on the small of her back, that was out of want for a real connection. The flutter in her heart tells her so.

The phone vibrates again, and the screen lights up as text appears under the post-it. She picks up the device and peels off the note.

- Hello? the screen reads.

No caller ID, but it must be Helena.

- Are you ok?

- I think so

- Where are you?

- I’m not sure

- What do you see?

- Books, movies, CDs. The Fly on DVD, but no Metamorphosis?

- You’re in a store?

- An apartment

- There must be a reason you’re there

- I see a note

A note? Helena said she trusted no one, so who would leave a note? She scans the room for Pete to ensure he's otherwise occupied and wracks her brain for people Helena might trust. She begins to worry when no new text appears.

- What does it say?

Still no response. Maybe Helena's a hologram again? She did dematerialize rather suddenly earlier. As she scrolls through, reviewing their short conversation, something dawns on her. Helena's phrasing is off, and the book and movie comparisons are odd, both date from after she was bronzed.

- Emily?

Myka holds her breath, praying she’s wrong.

- To whom am I speaking?

Myka closes her eyes and rubs the bridge of her nose. This is getting more complicated than it needs to be.

- Agent Bering. Do you remember me?

- The secret service agent?

- Yes

- Am I hiding from that evil man?

- No. He’s gone. You’re safe

- Oh thank goodness. He frightened me

- I know. I’m sorry. What does the note say?

Myka flicks her eyes around the room as dots animate in a speech bubble, noting Pete’s new location.

- Under no circumstances may you use the phone nor leave the flat. Wait here for my return. Food is available in the refrigerator

- That sounds like Helena

- Helena? The person those evil men thought I was?

- Yes

- She has lovely penmanship

Myka smiles. Emily's a schoolteacher no matter the circumstances.

- Why am I here?

- It sounds like you’re safe. Do what Helena says

- I don’t understand

- Hang tight. I’ll figure out where you are and meet you. Don’t call or text anyone except me

- Could you bring Dickens?

Myka grimaces; of course, she’d want her cat.

- I’ll see what I can do

- Do you know where he is?

- I’ll look into it

When no new message appears, she slips the phone into her pocket, but it vibrates again.

- I’m scared.

- You’re safe. Please stay put. Do what Helena says

- You’ll take care of me, won’t you?

- I will. Leave a note for Helena. Tell her what we talked about

- Why? Can’t I tell her in person?

- You might be asleep when she gets back

It’s a weak answer, but she hopes it works.

- I am tired

- Everything’s going to be ok. Ok?

- Thank you Agent Bering.

- Call me Myka

- Thank you Myka

Myka chews her lip as she waits for further response, not trusting Emily to be done just yet. It's terrifying to be alone in an unfamiliar place and Emily’s searching for a connection, she gets that. After a few moments of silence, she tucks the phone away and turns her attention back to the search.

First thing in the B&B, Myka hunts for Claudia and finds her, hunkered down in the living room, in the midst of an all-night movie marathon with Steve. Instead of approaching her, she stands in the doorway, mulling over options, not wanting to raise suspicions, as the Brother Adrian situation has everyone on high alert. But she needs to pull Claudia out of there, pronto, as Helena's situation's only going to get worse—

She startles as a hand touches her shoulder.

“Everything ok?”

“Hey, Leena, hi,” Myka says, spinning around to greet Leena. "Yep. All good."

“Can I get you anything?” Leena's smile dims as she takes in Myka’s aura.

“Thanks, but…I’m, uh, beat. I’m going to turn in." Myka stumbles over her words as her pocket vibrates.

“Let me know if you need anything. Even just to talk.”

“Thanks,” Myka says. She tempers her gait as she walks towards the stairs then rushes up, running head first into Pete at the top.

“Wheres the fire?” Pete says, bending back, waving his hands.

“Shower. Now," Myka replies, pointing to her door.

“Movie time de-nied.”

“I need today to be over. And yesterday. The past few days.”

“But you’re missing out on some sweeeet—"

“Don’t,” Myka snaps, thrusting her hand over Pete's lips, squeezing them shut with her fingers.

Pete peels her hand off his mouth. “You're just sore because I won. I found the funnel.”

“Horn, Pete. For the millionth time, it was a horn.”

“Whatevs. I scored, and you flopped. So there.” He leans forward, hands on hips, and sticks out his tongue.

“A guilt trip’s not going to work."

“Party pooper,” Pete says, index fingers pointed toward Myka, thumbs moving as if shooting a gun. He then jumps down the stairs.

Myka sighs tiredly then enters her room. She closes the door and locks it, then slips Helena’s phone out of her pocket.

- I apologize for that woman earlier

Myka collapses on the bed, relieved it’s Helena and not Emily.

- How long has this been happening?

- Since shortly after I was released. It began as a mere suggestion but lately has taken a turn for the worst

- Can I call you?

- Is the area secure?

- I think so. I’m in my room

- Not there. Outside

- It’s 1AM

- Sneak out

- Everyone's watching movies downstairs

- Have you spoken with Claudia?

- No. We literally just got back

As she waits for a reply, Myka scoots back on the bed. When none comes, she pushes on.

- Where are you?

- Safe. If that woman stays put. She's a menace to society

- She’s scared. She doesn’t know what's going on

- I understand, but she's a security risk

- I'll talk to Claudia as soon as I can. We’ll find the coin and fix this

- Do you know where it is?

- No. Do you?

- I’ve looked, but I’m afraid not

- You said Mrs. F would be angry. Why?

Seconds pass with no reply. That must have flipped the off switch. Is she not answering on purpose? If so, why?

- I don't know a Mrs. F and who's Claudia? Is she the menace to society?

Emily. Myka grits her teeth and closes her eyes, rubbing circles in her temple with her fingers.

- These texts say something’s happening. What's happening? Why am I holding the phone?

Myka hesitates, tumbling through possible explanations.

- And why am I wearing skinny jeans?

Myka smirks at that.

- Helena was just there

- I didn’t see her. Should I look for her outside?

- NO. Stay there

- No need to yell

- Sorry. How are you feeling?

- Blurry

- Eat something. Rest. Helena will be back soon

Myka's stomach twists at the lie, but it came out unthinkingly. Then again Helena will be back, just occupying her body, or rather Helena’s body.

- I’d like to meet her if she’s no longer endangering my life

- She's not

- Will you be coming soon?

Her fingers hover over the keyboard; Helena’s right, she is a security risk, so whatever it takes to keep her there, she’s game.

- I will. Hang tight

- Thank you

- Get some rest

Myka drops the phone onto her pillow and closes her eyes. She needs to talk with Claudia, now, which means movie time is no longer de-nied.

Myka showers to keep up appearances, her mind toggling between heated kisses and Helena’s dire situation. As she emerges, she lunges towards her vibrating phone and hits accept as she attempts a one-handed towel wrap.

“Helena?”

“Did I wake you?”

“You said this wasn’t secure."

“I’ll call later if—“

“Don’t hang up.”

Myka’s stomach flutters the line quiets, thrilled to hear Helena’s voice, but fearful of what she might say next.

"I’ve no control over whatever this is.”

“It’s getting worse, isn’t it."

“I’m afraid so."

"I’ll go get Claudia. We have to fix this before…"

The thought withers as neither party jumps complete it.

“Do you remember being Emily?”

“Not a thing. Though she is quite the pain in my arse."

“Why?”

“She acts like a petulant child, notes littered everywhere: why this, why that, ad nauseam. And can you please tell me why she's so offended by my attire?”

Myka snickers. “She likes cardigans. And floral prints. Bright colors. Her tastes are...different from yours.”

Helena doesn’t respond, but her disdain seeps through the line.

“Where are you?”

“A rental.”

“I told Emily I’d meet her.”

“Don't. It’s best you stay away.”

“But—"

"Once this rigamarole is sorted, I’d very much like to see you. But now..."

“I’d like to see you, too,” Myka says, her pulse quickening at the thought. “Try to stay solid and, um…yourself. I’ll be in touch, soon.”

“By rachel in CraftFashion A bra is a bit more advanced project, but it's not as hard as you might think, and by no means out of the reach of someone with moderate sewing skills. If you're willing to put in a little time on adjusting the pattern, you can end up with a bra that fits you exactly, which all too few commercial ones can do! Step 1: Tools and Materials Materials: fabric with at least a side-to-side stretch asymmetrical lingerie elastic for edging strap elastic underwires hooks & eyes a little knit interfacing optionally, stretch lace for decoration optionally, ribbon for decorative bows optionally, plastic hardware for adjusting the straps - but I leave this out b/c I can make the straps the exact right length without need for adjustments! You can buy underwires in some fabric stores or online, but if you have some old bras that need to be tossed out, reclaim the underwires from them first. Do your best to get an underwire of the correct size (hold it up under your breast and check that it fits snugly but without poking into your breast). They can be bent a little bit but they're actually made of flat metal in a U shape, not round wire, so as to hold shape better. Step 2: Pattern Bra patterns do exist for purchase, but I made a pattern from an existing bra. Some of the pieces were traceable, but the cup pieces weren't because of the underwires (I did not want to ruin the original by taking the underwires out). So my pattern was approximate, and I did make a test bra and revise the pattern according to how it fit. There are four pattern pieces: upper cup lower cup side/back front stay The important things about the pattern are a) how the cup pieces fit together, b) the lines of stretch, and c) some edges need seam allowances and some do not. Your fabric will almost certainly be stretchier in one direction than in the 90 degree direction; the stretchiest direction should go up and down on the cup pieces and the front stay, but sideways on the side/back pieces. Check out the pictures for the stretch direction markings. The cup pieces need seam allowance except for the top of the upper cup (you have a couple options there, see the Cups step). The side/back piece only needs seam allowance at the edge that attaches to the cups, as the rest of the edges will be finished with elastic. I'm not adding the bra pattern here because it will almost certainly not fit you, you'll have to do a bunch of alteration on it anyway and it's really hardly any more work to trace it from an existing bra that you know fits (or know exactly how it could fit better). Step 3: More on Adjusting the Pattern I made 1 partial bra and 1 additional complete bra while working out the pattern. The green one in the pic below is totally wearable although the elastic is so curly it looks really odd laid out flat. There are any number of possible adjustments to make but the most common are these: cup shape, which can be adjusted by changing the curve of the top of the cup lower piece. A small adjustment here goes a long way so change an eighth of an inch at a time, and make sure to smooth out the lines well. If you have to make a lot of change here you'll probably also need to adjust the cup upper as well, making it slightly longer or shorter to accommodate the difference in length of the lower cup edge. center stay. May need to be shorter or longer, depending on how widely placed your breasts are. You may also find that changing the angle of the sides gets you a better fit, either straighter or more flat of a triangle. cup top edge - I found I wanted my bras to be slightly less than full coverage, so I lowered the outside edge of the cup (but not the inside edge). This also meant I had to make the straps longer to make up for it. side/back too short or too long. Make adjustments to this piece in the underarm area. Step 4: Cut Cut out the pieces, 2 of each. Remember to lay out the stretch lines as you marked them on the stretchiest direction of fabric. Also I cut the center stay on a fold to eliminate one seam; the stretch line on the stay is up & down not side to side. If you have a very stretchy fabric you might even want to interface the stay or line it with another non-stretchy fabric for stability. Step 5: Cups Sew the two cup pieces together along the middle, making sure they are oriented correctly with respect to each other. Topstitch; you may line the back of this seam if you want, like if your fabric is very fine. Finish the top edge of the cup in any way you want. Here I added a stretch lace piece, but you can also use a piece of lingerie elastic, or if you think ahead you can cut two upper pieces and self-face the edge. In that case you probably want to do the edge seam first and then sew both upper pieces together to the lower piece. If you put on stretch lace like I did, it will probably be easier to sew it on before sewing the cup seam! You want the lace to be a little smaller than the cup (it stretches after all). Place it with the lace edge along the top edge of the upper cup piece, and sew it on with a small zigzag stitch. Finally trim the original fabric piece out from under the lace -- or leave it if you like the overlay look! Step 6: Center Stay Sew the stay together at the top (and bottom if you didn't cut it on a fold) and turn it right side out. Pin it to the inside of the cups, matching the top edges. Sew a little less than a quarter inch seam allowance, as the underwire channels will be the full quarter inch. Step 7: Sides With the old bra on, hold up your elastic from the underwire edge around your back to the other cup edge. Pull it to a reasonable tightness. This will give you twice the length of elastic you need for the bottom of the side panels. Pin the end and the middle to get the length for each side, and attach it to the side pieces. (If the elastic isn't an inch or two shorter than the side panel, recheck the elastic measurement and the side piece pattern, as one of them is wrong). The sewing technique for attaching lingerie elastic is explained in my Panties instructable, in the step about the leg elastic. Next, sew the sides to the cups, matching top edges, similar to how you sewed the center front stay, a bit less than a quarter inch seam allowance. Step 8: Underwires Cut two strips of interfacing, the length of your cups' bottom edge and an inch wide. Fold one in half lengthwise (if you had to use iron-on, make sure the glue is folded inside) and pin it around the bottom edge of a cup, edges out. Place it over the front stay and side piece, leaving a bit of room next to the seam allowance, as in the picture. Stitch the channel down using a quarter inch seam allowance to the edge of the bra cup. The previous stitching lines shouldn't show at all. Now fold and wrap the underwire channel around to the inside of the bra cup, releasing the stay and the side piece. It should rest a little more than a quarter of an inch inside the cup, and cover all the raw edges. Stitch this in place close to the folded edge of the channel. Stitch a bar tack across the end of the channel by the center front stay, so the underwires don't come out. Now insert the underwires from the outside edge by just sliding them in the channel you made. The underwires are not symmetrical; there's a shorter end and a longer end although sometimes the difference is small. The longer end goes at the outside edge. Step 9: Side Elastic and Straps Determine the correct length of elastic to run from the bra back, around your sides on top of the side piece, up to the top of the cup, by trial and error: first hold a piece so it seems right while wearing your original bra. Write down the length and try sewing it; you can pick it out and adjust if necessary (or if you're working on the practice one you don't need to bother fixing it). Once the side elastic is on, figure out the strap elastic length. Stitch one end of the strap elastic to each of the remaining back edges without elastic. Now you can pin the bra on yourself and determine how long the straps need to be. Stitch the strap to the cup, right sides together, where you marked. Cut the elastic if you haven't yet, and fold up the strap so you can stitch the cut end down in a zigzag like in the last picture, to keep it tidy. I didn't think to do this, but if you have an old bra that's worn out but the straps or strap hardware is still good, you could reuse those parts. Step 10: Hooks & Eyes You can use a bra back extender instead which some fabric stores sell, or sew on hooks & eyes yourself. I ended up using a wide single hook & bar, instead of a pair of small hooks & eyes as is usual because I got lazy. But it works fine. First cover the raw ends with something soft - a scrap of T-shirt fabric works great. I simply cut a square, stitch one end to the right side of the bra ends, fold the sides under, and topstitch them down. Then just sew the hook & eye down, by hand or by machine, making sure there's enough tail on the eye end that the hook won't scratch your back when you wear it.” I have a weird sense of “cheap af” and laziness. So though I know it’ll cost me much more to get all the materials I need to make it myself, I just don’t wanna spend money and energy on buying a stupid bra. And I know it’s going to take so much more energy to make the dang thing, but I haaaaaaaaate going to the store and trying the stupid shit on. Nikon Z 5 Review: Full-frame But Too Slow

As the race for full-frame mirrorless settles from a sprinter’s pace to a marathon, camera lineups are getting more varied — and less expensive. The Nikon Z 5 is the company’s most affordable full-frame camera currently on the market, less expensive than even the aging D610 DSLR. The Nikon Z 5, priced at $1,400 or $1,700 with a kit lens, mixes the size, ergonomics, stabilization, and even most of the image quality of the company’s pricier Z 6. In fact, the Z 5 even offers an upgrade the Z 6 and Z 7 don’t offer — dual SD card slots.

The entry-level designation, however, introduces a few significant cut features from the pricier models. Speed is significantly slashed, 4K video can only be captured with a crop, and the design isn’t quite as rugged. The question is, does the Nikon Z 5 offer enough to drop $1,400 on? Dubbed as a camera for “more than just photographers,” who is the Z 5 best for?

I spent almost two weeks trying out the Z 5 to see where the entry-level full-frame stands. In that time, I believe that the Nikon Z 5 showed itself to be a good entry-level full-frame camera unfortunately held back by subpar low-light autofocus and sluggish burst speeds.

Simple design

While the Z 6’s design is a near twin to the Z 7, the Z 5 strays a bit more from that family line in ways that are both good and bad. On the positive side, the Z 5 manages to fit two UHS-II SD card slots, ideal for either creating in-camera backups so a card error doesn’t spell disaster or to create overflow for less card swapping. The Z 5 also doesn’t use XQD cards, a good move for an entry-level camera considering the card type retails in the triple digits, a lot when compared to the affordability king that is SD, where many high-capacity cards can be had for as little as $20.

Despite adding an extra card slot, the Z5 is only a 10th of an inch wider than the Z 6 and Z 7 and doesn’t add any weight. At less than a pound and a half, the camera is light enough for all-day shoots. (I can’t say the same for the rough texture of the included neck strap, however.) Paired with the kit lens, the Z 5 didn’t cause any major aches and pains while on a two-mile hike.

The Z 5 uses a magnesium alloy frame but combines that with a plastic exterior that feels just like an entry-level Nikon DSLR. The body is weather-sealed, but it’s not as robust of a seal as the Z 6 and Z 7. As a result, I would still keep an inexpensive camera rain poncho in my bag for anything more than a drizzle.

The camera’s control scheme is a nice hybrid blend between keeping controls accessible yet not overwhelming beginners. The top of the camera doesn’t house an extra LCD screen. I argue that a top-facing LCD isn’t terribly unusual for mirrorless, but its absence here strays from Nikon’s design choices in its entry-level full-frame DSLR, the D610, which kept the screen intact.

Instead, the mode dial sits on top within reach of the shutter button, dual control dials, and shortcuts for recording video, adjusting ISO, and tweaking exposure compensation. With some practice, all those controls could be accessed without pulling the camera away from your face, though differentiating between the ISO and exposure compensation button is tough to do blind, unlike with the easily discernible raised record button.

Despite being an entry to the full-frame category, the Z 5 keeps my all-time favorite camera control: The joystick. It’s a quick and ergonomic method to adjust where the autofocus point is. Swapping between autofocus modes, however, as well as a number of other controls that Nikon’s DSLRs leave plenty of room for, requires jumping into the quick menu or assigning to the two custom buttons up front. Most beginners won’t mind, however, because the camera’s controls feel less daunting to learn. Shortcuts to adjust the burst mode and a back-button focus option, as well as playback, menu, and display options, take up a remainder of the camera’s rear controls.

Ports were not stripped for the budget price either — opposite the dual SD card slots, the Z 5 still includes ports for mic, headphones, HDMI, USB, and a cable trigger. Like many full-frame mirrorless cameras, the Z 5 lacks a pop-up flash.

The lower price doesn’t terribly truncate the Z 5’s viewfinder, either. At 3.69 million dots, the electronic viewfinder shows sufficient detail and is denser than the also-new Panasonic Lumix S5. Importantly, the Z 5 shows a pretty accurate representation of what you are about to capture, unlike some budget cameras that I’ve tried that don’t quite show an accurate preview of the exposure or color balance. The 3.2-inch touchscreen tilts for shooting from high angles but doesn’t flip forward for vlogging or selfies.

Stuttering performance

Budget cameras are notorious for being slow, and the Z 5 is no exception. Despite having the same processor as the 12 fps Z 6, the Z 5 offers less than half that speed. Some might argue that is because the Z 5 uses SD cards rather than the faster but more expensive XQD cards, but the transfer rates we are looking at here are well below the threshold for SD speeds. Curious.

With a maximum burst speed of 4.5 frames per second, I’m not even sure why there’s both a low- and high-speed option since even high speed is rather slow. The shutter speed is thankfully still a max of 1/8,000 (entry-level cameras used to be capped at 1/4000 regularly), handy for bright situations.

The Z 5’s 4.5 fps top speed will plug away for about 21 shots shooting RAW + JPEG. The official buffer count listed on the back of the camera is 16, but the pace is slow enough that the camera writes a few of those shots while taking the rest. You’ll eke out a few more shots in JPEG mode, with the camera shooting for more than 20 seconds before stopping.

The Z 5’s autofocus in limited light is consistently poor.

What’s a bit harder to determine from a quick look at the camera’s tech specs, however, is the autofocus. With a 273-point hybrid system, the Z 5’s system looks almost identical to the Z 6, until you dig a little further into the specifics. And if you dig far enough, you’ll find the camera’s biggest flaw: An autofocus detection range down to only -2 EV, or -3 using the camera’s low-light autofocus. However, Nikon rated the AF in low light with an f/2 lens, so the kit lens and many other lenses available for the system won’t work as well as Nikon’s specifications claim, a claim which is already not great. It’s not lying outright, but it is misleading.

That turns out to be the culprit of why the Z 5’s autofocus struggled indoors. Even in a room with windows on three of the walls, the Z 5 was slow to focus. In dim light, the camera would often take two to even five seconds before locking onto the subject and occasionally failing to find the subject at all. While not an issue for still subjects, shooting any sort of movement in limited light becomes problematic with such a delay. The camera will automatically activate low-light autofocus mode, however — a plus considering the original Z 6 and Z 7 require activating the mode in the menu. Low-light autofocus is more accurate and allows for focusing in tough scenarios, but is slow.

Because of how the autofocus system works, the camera will also struggle to focus on dark objects. But, as is true with any contrast detection system, that should be alleviated by the phase-detection points of a hybrid system. The Z 5 has a much easier time focusing on subjects with a lot of contrast, such as lights or a light-colored object on a dark background, but it shouldn’t struggle as much as it did on dark objects. It’s a hybrid autofocus system that’s acting like a contrast-only one in some cases, and that is disappointing.

Low-light autofocus was a complaint on the Z 6 and even Z 7, with a tendency to be hit or miss, but the Z 5’s autofocus in limited light is consistently poor. The Z 6, by comparison, is rated to hit -6 EV in low-light mode, where the Z 5 is only at -3.5.

What makes the low-light autofocus truly disappointing is that the Z 5 would otherwise be an excellent camera in the dark. The five-axis, in-body stabilization is solid. Doing everything I could to help the camera stay steady short of a tripod — holding my breath and bracing the camera with my elbows — I could shoot down to nearly a half-second at 24mm on the kit lens. That’s an excellent system for the price of the camera, but the slow low-light autofocus will make shots difficult before the camera even needs to go that low. Of course, stabilization isn’t just for low light — the stabilization will come in handy when working with telephoto lenses.

The focus system detects eyes fairly easily and quickly.

Continuous autofocus gets sharp photos most of the time with slow action, though roughly half of the shots where the subject was coming directly at the camera ended up soft. It’s not designed for action but will grab a few sharp shots in more general use, like photographing kids or people moving at a walking pace.

The Z 5’s autofocus isn’t all bad, however. Eye detection AF worked well and even beats out the pricier Canon EOS R6 in focusing on eyelashes when shooting from a high angle. The focus system detects eyes fairly easily and quickly. The system isn’t fast enough for say, using while shooting sports, but as mentioned the Z 5 isn’t an action camera. Pet eye AF is included, but I couldn’t get it to work on my cat. (To be fair, I couldn’t get the Canon version of this to work on my cat either.)

The Z 5 adds a new autofocus bracketing option that automatically adjusts the focal length between shots in a series in order to create a focus stack later on a computer. The new feature is easy to use for anyone who has worked with Nikon bracketing or time lapses before. But the shots are activated by pressing start in the menu — which means you see the menu in the viewfinder and can’t perfect the composition before hitting start. It’s a usability flaw that we hope to see improved in later firmware updates.

Excellent images and video

The Z 5 makes fewer sacrifices when it comes to image quality. Sporting a 24.3-megapixel full-frame sensor, the Z 5 has just a smidgen less resolution than the pricier Z 6. The larger sensor size makes bokeh easy to create even with the kit and offers a lot of flexibility in post. Detail is good, and, when perfectly focused, even the kit lens is quite sharp.

Lower resolution bodes well for ISO and, under perfect conditions, I could edit out the noise of an ISO 12800 shot with only a slight loss of detail. Photos are best kept under ISO 6400, where there is some noticeable color noise, but the kind that’s easily corrected with software.

Color was equivalent to what I would expect coming from a Nikon DSLR — on the whole accurate, with an occasional tendency to skew the white balance a tad green for my taste. Skin tones are rendered fairly well.

RAW files are also consistent with what I would expect from an entry-level, full-frame Nikon DSLR. I could recover a good amount of detail and even texture from the shadows, to the point of almost reversing a near silhouette. As with almost any camera, blown-out highlights are tougher to recover, and photographers are best to err on the side of too dark rather than too light.

The Nikon Z 5 offers 4K video, but at a 1.7x crop and without all the bells and whistles of the Z 6 and Z 7, such as N-Log. The 1.7x crop means both a loss of light and lenses won’t be as wide, but it’s not unusual for an entry-level option. Colors and sharpness are consistently good, as with the images, and the Z 5 does less focus searching mid-recording than a Nikon DSLR.

Our Take

The Nikon Z 5 is a good entry-level full-frame camera — but slow low-light autofocus, inconsistent accuracy in mixed lighting, and a sluggish burst mode keep the camera from being a great entry-level full-frame option. The Nikon Z 5 is a good option for enthusiast photographers, influencers, and other creatives regularly taking photos in good light.

Image quality and design are both excellent, while the slower performance is Nikon’s clear differentiator when it comes to the extra $400 for the Z 6. If the Z 5 was $1000 or even $1200, it would be an easy recommendation; but at just $400 less than a significantly better performing camera, it’s a hard sell.

How long will it last?

Camera bodies tend to last a few years, and the Z 5 is likely no exception. The weather sealing and materials aren’t as high-end as the Z 6 and Z 7, but with proper care, the camera body should serve you well into the future.

Is there a better alternative?

If you want a full-frame Nikon and can’t spend more than $1,400, no. Even the aging Nikon D610 only focuses down to -1 EV and is $200 more at list price. Waiting to save up another $400 for the Z 6 is a good idea, however, for any photographer regularly taking photos indoors or of moving subjects.

Yet, the full-frame mirrorless market is getting crowded for photographers not yet invested in a lens system or willing to make a switch. The Canon EOS RP has a better autofocus system thanks to Dual Pixel technology and is rated to focus as low as -5EV, but lacks in-body stabilization. Finding another $1,400 camera is difficult to do outside those two models and older generations. The Sony a7 III is a faster camera, but is $600 more. The very new Panasonic Lumix S5 offers better autofocus, more advanced video modes, and faster bursts, but again, sits at the $2,000 price range, not the under-$1,500 range.

Moving into the crop sensor category will fix those performance issues, but sacrifices that larger sensor. Nikon’s own Z 50 is much faster with similar ergonomics and lens compatibility, yet the low light autofocus still isn’t ideal. The Fujifilm X-T30 has a faster burst, more video features, and excellent autofocus, but it lacks stabilization. The Sony a6600 offers a fast burst and autofocus while keeping the stabilization, but again, has that smaller sensor.

Should you buy it?

Buy the Nikon Z 5 if you want a full-frame Nikon, largely take pictures outdoors in good light, and can’t spend more than $1,400. If you plan on lots of shooting in less than ideal conditions, however, including in limited light or fast-moving subjects, avoid the Z 5. Wait until you can save up another $400 for the Z 6, or consider a crop sensor or the unstabilized EOS RP.

Recipe File: Biltong

comes from the Dutch words "bil"(rump) and "tong" (tongue or strips) so roughly translates as rump strips. It was created by the early Dutch settlers who quickly realized that meat would not stay fresh for long in that hot climate and that you would need to make provisions for your journey as there was no guarantee that you would find meat along the way. When Voortrekkers where moving though the wilderness of South Africa, they changed the indigenous curing process from one that used salt as the key curing ingredient to that of vinegar.

They also used saltpetre and then of course they added the various spices including pepper and coriander which has come to be the signature taste of biltong today. Using this method they were able to take supplies along with them that would not spoil and easy to transport.

While we no longer need to make biltong for survival it has become a widespread and much loved snack and can be found all over the world now. Where ever there are Southern Africans you will find people making and selling biltong.

What type of meat can you use to make biltong? Because there was a shortage of livestock in the early days, people began to look at other types of meat they could use including the local animals. As a result of this today you will find that any self respecting South African butcher will stock a variety of meats ranging from traditional beef to Eland, Kudu, Ostrich and many more. There are even specialist shops that will make biltong out of almost any meat including Giraffe meat.

Having said all of this it should be noted that many of the different game meats are an acquired taste and I would recommend that you stick to the traditional sliver side beef when making this as this is the staple meat and one for the easiest to get right.

I would also recommend that you buy the pre-made seasoning packs as people spend a long time working to get the right combination of spices for this. For someone who is just looking to give it a go them this is the best option. It is quite easy to buy this spice mix where ever you are, just look on line there are people who sell it.

I personally like to add in some dry crushed chilly as I love spicy food.

Biltong is best eaten with friends, if you are having a sports night with friends or a BBQ in the back yard biltong is the snack of choice. If you were to go to a similar event in South Africa there will almost always be biltong there.

Making biltong

What you will need to make biltong Two kg of meat if you can (silver side if possible; American's would most likely call this rump roast). 1-2 litres of brown vinegar (malt vinegar). Pre made biltong spice (at least 45 g for every kg of meat you have). Wire s hooks to hang the meat with (must be strong enough to hold the weight of the meat). Flat bottom container big enough to hold all of the meat. Very sharp big knife to help you cut the meat well. Somewhere warm and dry to hang the meat

There is a very definite process when you are making biltong, it is advisable that you have all of the spices and vinegar marinade ready before you start as once you have started you will need to see this through until the meat is hanging to dry.

The other very important thing to remember is that making biltong in not science, it is an art and you will need to practice it to get it right. I will tell you this, if you get this right it will be worth it as there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world.

Cutting the meat Cutting the meat right is one of the most important things to do in the process, depending on how thick that you make it will get you different results. It should be noted that drying meat will loose about 50-60% of its weight(meat is about 80% water remember. If you make the strips to too thin they will become too dry (unless that is what you are looking for) and too fat will mean that the inside will not dry and will still be red and wet when cut open(this is the way that I love it).

Make sure that what whatever thickness you decide that you cut the meat as consistently as possible so that you get a stick of biltong that is the same consistency all the way through.

It is a good idea to start with a medium thickness, I like to make them just over an inch thick and you really should try to make sure that there is a line on fat on the one edge If you are using the silver-side cut this should be OK as there is a fatty edge to it.

There really are a few ways to do this and other people will use different cuts, at the end of the day it is a matter of personal preference. What I am offering here is a good safe bet that will most likely hit the spot.

Marinating the meat Once you have meat sliced into stripes you will need to add it to the brown vinegar marinade and leave it there for a while

The best method of doing this is to have a container that you can lay the meat down in. Your container should be big enough so that you can lay the meat out fully. Your best bet is to have a container that has a flat bottom Once you have you have your first layer of meat then you can sprinkle on the brown vinegar. You don't want to pour the vinegar on, rather use your hands to sprinkle it so that you get an even cover on the meat. Once you have done this on one side then you will need to turn the meat over and do the same process on the other side.

Once you have done this process you will want to add the biltong spice. You are going to be looking at using about 45 grams of spice for every kg of meat that you have. You need to make sure that this is evenly spread over the meat as well, so you should repeat the process above with the spice, if you have two layers of meat them do this on the first layer and then on the second.

At the end of this process you should have meat that has been covered by vinegar and them by the spices. You can rub them a little to make sure that everything is as even as possible.

You are then going to leave the meat in the container for about 24 hours. You can turn the meat every once in a while to make sure that both sides of the meat are getting an even cover. Make sure that the container is covered and left in a cool place.

Drying the meat

Once the meat has been sitting for 24 hours it is time to hang the meat.

At the top of the strip of meat and about 2 cm in make a hole in the meat and put the hook on once this is done then you will need to hang the meat to dry.

You should be looking to find a place where it is warm and dry. I would also advise that you use a place where there is some ventilation so that this process works as best as it can. For people in the colder areas one of the ways that you can create this is by having a light on in the cupboard or area that you are drying the meat, this will help you keep the temperature up a little. You need a warm place to make sure the process of drying is relatively fast but you do not want to cook the meat so be careful.

For most hanging it in the garage will do the trick nicely.

How long should the meat hang? Usually this process will take about 3 days, but again there is no real accurate answer as there are so many variable that will need to be taken into account( air temp and humidity etc)

You will notice that the meat will go black and this is perfect the process has begun, for me the best way to tell how it is getting along is to pinch the meat with your thumb and forefinger. The more give there is the wetter the biltong is. As I like mine a little wet I will not let the meat sit there for so long. I am afraid that this will be a bit of trial and error, if you have strips that are different in thickness this will also make the drying time different. If you aim for 3 days you should be ok, start testing on the second day to see how it coming along.

You can also take some off early to see if you like it and leave the others longer until you find the sweet spot for you.

You should also see that the little bit of fat on the biltong has gone slightly transparent, when it has done this then you are good to go.

Storing the meat You can store biltong for while but there is a catch, the longer you want to store the meat the drier it will have to be. For most people biltong will not last more then a few days so this is never really an issue.

There are a few things to consider with biltong. Your biltong can go moldy if stored incorrectly. The wetter the biltong is the greater the chance of mold popping up. If you like wet biltong then you will need to consume it with in a few days. You can put it in the fridge to help it keep better.( if you store biltong in the fridge take it out and let it warm to room temperature, it tastes better that way)

The best way to store biltong is to simply leave it hanging where you have been drying it. One of the things that can ruin your biltong is putting it into a packet or paper bag as this will create a damp environment which will potentially bring on mold.

You should remember that the drying process does not really stop so if you leave biltong in a confined area then moisture id going to build up.

Some people will vacuum pack and freeze it and this will work to, but to be honest if you want to be getting the best out of your labors you should just eat it as soon as possible. To be honest we have never had this issue in our house as we just eat it, it is one of the most more-ish foods I know.

Once you have done this a few times you will get hang of it. One thing I will say with certainty, you will either love biltong or hate it. But if you love it, you will never get enough of it.

Summary: When Thanos finds himself losing ground in his war he steps outside of the timestream and rewrites himself a better universe. Somehow Peter seems to be the only one who recognizes the wrongness and he's determined to find his friends and set it right again. The problem is he has no clue where they are. Now he has to track them down and rally them into a family again, all while dodging bounties on his head and trying to avoid being strangled by Nebula.

Author’s Notes: This is my first attempt at writing fanfiction so helpful reviews and any support would be very appreciated! It started as my trying my hand at NaNoWriMo by getting down a story idea that had been bouncing around in my head for a while. Although due to technical errors I only made it to 10k words by the end of the month, I am still planning to finish this somewhat ambitious project. I am also planning to have this posted on Ao3 once I get my account set up there.

Something in his knuckle popped and shifted as he dragged himself forward. Yup. It was definitely broken again. A haze of dust and smoke, and a few things that were much less pleasant to think about stung his eyes and burned in his already aching lungs. The crazed thought filled his head that he would somehow drown in it out here in the open air. A giggle bubbled in his throat at the irony but he swallowed it down. No. It was just the concussion. Ignore it. Focus. What was he doing again? Oh yes. Through the film of smog and tears he could just make out his destination; a small form just ahead of him crumpled up like a discarded child's toy, grey fur tinted red in the harsh glare of this unforgiving lighting. His other hand reached out and he dragged himself another foot closer. At least, he hoped it was the lighting that was flooding his vision so red. Nails dug into the dirt as he heaved away another piece of the distance between himself and his target. Almost there. Somewhere in the distance he could hear the battle raging on without him. Screams, crashes, explosions; all so far away, swirling in and out of focus like the smog. Gamora was somewhere out there. The flash of her sword and the ice in her eyes somehow the only thing his mind could see clearly. She had vanished in a swell of soldiers with Nebula close in pursuit and he hadn’t seen her since. She was alive. He had to believe that. The most fearsome woman in the galaxy couldn’t fall here. Closer. Closer. He realized the horrid rattling he was hearing was not the sound of a failing ship as he had thought, but his own ragged breathing grating in his ears. That could not be a good thing. He’d lost track of Drax almost as soon as the fight had started. A battle cry the only warning he gave before diving headfirst and weapons drawn into the fray. It was an act so stupid, so reckless, so brave and just so… Drax, that Peter could hardly find it in himself to be mad even as he cursed the impulsive fool. He could really use him right now. Four feet had never looked so impossible, not in any of his wildest benders or worst bar fights – and oh, there had been plenty of both. He’d give his right arm to wake up on the floor of some unknown tavern- all of this just a horrible dream brought on by too much of a strange liquid Yondu had warned him against (which, of course, would have only made him down that much more). But Yondu had left to fetch help, And help had never arrived. And now he crawled through the dirt and debri, trying not to focus on how the world tilted and swayed even under his prone form. The twig in his jacket pocket dug into his bruised side as he slid across the dirt. Groot's parting gift. The thought was almost enough to give him pause. He couldn’t focus on that now. He would be okay. Like Gamora, Groot was tough. And while he might be naive, he wasn't stupid. Either the smoke was getting thicker or his vision was failing him as the light distorted futher, spots dancing at the edges and patches mysteriously missing. It didn’t matter. He was almost there. One thought playing over and over- like his tape player playing on repeat in the background- as all the other thought drifted in and out at their own accord. He would not let Rocket die wearing that god damned muzzle. His annoying, infuriating, impossible best friend would not die like an animal. Caged and chained. Like the experiment 89P13 that he had always so feared becoming. Panting and gasping, he reached out, stretching desperately across the distance, his fingers brushing against the smooth metal that covered his friend’s face. Was he even still breathing? He couldn’t stop to check, his arm already trembling and going numb from the strain. Slowly, haphazardly, he searched blindly for the strap. Why couldn’t he see? Had he closed his eyes without realizing it? He should open them but he was just so tired. Unconsciousness was calling in the sweetest siren song he had ever heard.   There! His fingers brushed across a thin strip of the same metal. That had to be it. A surge of hope gave him the adrenaline he needed to drag himself another inch forward and search down the strap for the clasp. His concussion must be worse than he feared because he couldn’t find it. More tears gathered in his eyes, not entirely due to the smoke and pain as he desperately grabbed at where a clasp should be, only to lose it entirely in fur. No. Nonono! He was so… so close… blood rushed in his ears, deafening, as light pierced through the veil of blackness. Was this it? He was dying, and he couldn’t even do this one last goddamned thing.

Time is a funny thing. From the perspective of most mortals it was an inescapable part of reality; Imperceptible, uncontrollable, marching on endlessly. Trying to hold back time was much like dipping your hand into a river in hope of halting the flow. No. Stopping time was the pipedream of madmen. It could be diverted, though. One could pull themselves from the river entirely, climb onto its bank and dig their own channel, suited to their own liking, and guide it to the destination of their choosing. And that is just what Thanos was doing now. He was building himself a new reality, another chance. Too much had gone wrong in this reality. The orb had been lost, by none other than his own general turned traitor. His daughters had both been disappointments in turn. Too many battles had been lost and too many foes grown bold. But he could fix this. Here in Limbo, in a realm outside of time, he strode in no particular hurry along the timestream, looking for the moment that would best suit his means. There would be work to do along the way. Players to rearrange and redraw. It would all work out in the end. Of this he was certain. The orb would be his again, and then the rest of the Infinity stones, and everything would be in place. Ah, here. This would do. The titan dipped his hand into the stream, and began digging. It happened one trickle after another and all at once. Without the passage of true time, perspective was skewed. Digging the trench and dragging the time onto another course took an eternity and a blink of the eye. Time screamed as it was ripped and torn apart. The many threads came undone and rewound into the new stream, the better stream. A smile split the Titan’s face. All would be as it was meant to be.

With a strangled gasp Peter shot out of bed. Dirty laundry and trash was sent flying around his room as he flailed and hopped about, the blanket clinging stubbornly to his legs. His arms pin wheeled, grasping for anything to keep him upright, but he only succeeded in catching a small shelf and taking it down with him, sending the items crashing down on top of him as he landed with a heavy thump. In the stillness that followed he could hear the jubilant voice of Elvis Bishop as “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” played from the headset still miraculously wrapped around his neck. Well, good. At least nothing important was broken. Slowly, Peter uncurled, groaning out a string of curses as he checked his limbs and probed carefully at the back of his head where the corner of something particularly heavy had struck. No blood, but he would have one heck of a goose egg for a while. Satisfied that he was relatively alright, and honestly he had woken up in much worse states after a night of a little too much fun, he rolled over and began carefully peeling the blanket from his legs. As he worked he tried to think back to the dream he had been having, but all he could recall were glimpses of a blinding light and a lingering sense of urgency and wrongness that clung to him like a layer of sweat. It was somewhat akin to suddenly remembering that you had left the oven on only after you were lightyears away with no way to fix it, but worse. So much worse. Trying to calm his hammering heart, Peter stood and stretched dramatically before switching off his Walkman and placing it neatly on his now empty bed. In the resulting silence he was met with only the calm steady thrum of the Milano’s engines. Still the sense of wrongness would not leave him. Perhaps a shower would help. That was usually a great way to reset himself after a particularly nasty nightmare and this was no different, even if he couldn’t remember enough details to say whether or not it was, in fact, a particularly nasty nightmare. Opening the door to the rest of the ship, however, only left the alarms in his head screaming louder than ever that this was WRONG WRONG WRONG. The Milano looked exactly as he had last seen it. That is. It looked EXACTLY as he had last seen it just before being destroyed on Xandar, being rebuilt as a gift for saving the galaxy, being nearly destroyed again on Berhert, and being again painstakingly rebuilt from the rubble. Suddenly the undercurrent of surrealism on his bedroom floor made sense. He hadn’t noticed at first, perhaps because of the years that it had spent in that state, or perhaps because he was not known for being a particularly observant person when first awakening, but it was his old room, from before the first crash had mangled it. Burned up so much of his already sparse belongings that all of Dey’s efforts couldn’t truly replicate it down to every haphazard detail. For a long time he stood in his doorway and tried to process what was going on. He was still dreaming right? That must be it. Whatever he drank last night had one hellova kick. But it felt so real. And the details were so perfect, right down to that same old soft rattle in the Milano’s engine- that he was totally going to get looked at before it exploded!- which was never present in the remade Milano. So not a dream, then. A hallucination? Maybe, but why would a hallucination be so… mundane? A trick of the mind? It wouldn’t be the first time he’d pissed off a psychic, but this was hardly the kind of punishment he had become so very unpleasantly accustom to. Well, staring at the empty core of the ship wasn’t providing him with any clues. If he wanted answers he’d have to find them, and that’s just what he intended to do. A quick scope of the ship’s compartments only confirmed his initial theory that this was somehow a version of his ship from before the other Guardians had come into his life. No extra lofts or beds, no sunlamps for Groot’s pot, no bombs rolling dangerously around the floor, threatening to blow them all up at any moment, no tools for sharpening weapons, or strange heady aromas of Drax’s attempts at cooking, though sometimes one had to use that term very loosely.   “Okay guys,” He called out to no one in particular. “This isn’t funny, come on out.” Silence, save for the distant k-thunk k-thunk of the old Milano’s engine. “HAHA! You got me! You really pulled one over on old Starlord there! Now why don’t you show yourself so we can all laugh about this together?” Still nothing. “Come on Gamora,” He appealed with what was definitely not a crack in his voice “You’re better than this. Don’t stoop to their level.” K-thunk… k-thunk… k-thunk… Disturbed, Peter made his way up to the cockpit and slid into the pilot’s chair. Through the windshield only empty space greeted him. So he wasn’t docked on a planet. Peter wasn’t sure if this made things simpler or not. A quick check of his navigation system didn’t help much either. He was drifting through a star system that was familiar enough to him. He had passed through here plenty of times delivering liberated goods, looking for jobs, and even just stopping by one of its many rest locations for a little break. The problem was… he couldn’t recall how or why he would have come here now. Turning away from the navigational readings he pulled up a new screen and sent a hail to the Eclector. Since the repairs had been finished on his beloved ship (again) the Guardians had unanimously moved back into it. The old Ravager’s ship had its larger size, but the Milano was home. Emphasis on was right now- what the heck was going on here!? Peter didn’t have long to puzzle over this before a series of beeps alerted him that his call had been accepted and all thought vanished from his head. A long silence reined over the Milano as Peter stared, slack jawed and wide eyed at the screen before him. Slowly a cold indignant rage boiled up from somewhere deep within his gut. Oh this was too much. He could take a good prank as much as the next guy but there were LINES. And those lines hadn’t just been crossed, they’d been trampled and spat on and…. The arm rest creaked under his white knuckled grip. “Lookee here boyo.” The dead man leaned into the camera, every perfect detail becoming even clearer. “If you just called me as another one of yer damn pranks I'll have you thrown out of the airlock of that damned ship of yours!” “I-I, uh...” Peter swallowed thickly, struggling to find a single coherent thought. “Speak up boy! You get yourself paralyzed again? I told yah to stop-” “You're alive.” Just a whisper, and suddenly the damn broke and the words were spilling out in a desperate jumble. “How are you alive!? Where are they, by the way?” He'd almost forgotten after seeing the dead man's face, but his friends were all still missing. “The who now?” The ravager captain still looked nonplussed, but his finger was no longer hovering over the disconnect button so that had to be a good sign. “You know, the Guardians of the Galaxy? My friends? We only, you know, saved the galaxy twice now.” Any trace of patience was lost in the captain's scowl now and Peter rushed to stop him from leaving before he got any answers at all. “Come on man,” He pleaded “You have to stop messing with me. Did Rocket put you up to this? The Guardians. You know – Drax, big, scary, walking thesaurus. Groot, galaxies most personable houseplant. Rocket, biggest asshole you've ever met, and Gamora, most feared woman in the galaxy! We stole the infinity stone, Kicked Ronan's ass and saved all of Xandar. Does any of this ring a bell?” “THAT'S ENOUGH!” Peter's jaw snapped closed so fast there was an audible click. Yondu's expression had morphed into something dark and serious. “Whatever game you're playing at here I think it's best that you stop right here and now. And watch your damned tongue. Those kinds of jokes are liable to get you into all kinds of trouble in these quadrants, and I don't want you dragging me into it, ya hear?” “But I-” Peter stammered, thoroughly confused again. “I said no more. Now you best knock these silly games off and let me get back to work.” With that yondu pressed down on the button and the screen winked out of existence, leaving Peter once more staring blankly into the empty space beyond his windshield. Somehow he was even more confused now than before he'd made the call. What was going on? Yondu was somehow here, but his crew was missing. And what the flark did he mean 'in these quadrants'? Sure it wasn't exactly a hubble of law and order, but this was hardly what a ravager would consider a dangerous area. And anyways, what did it even matter? Ronan was DEAD. Peter groaned and rubbed at his temples. This was all just giving him a gigantic headache and he was no closer to figuring out what was going on. For a while he just sat there letting his ship drift through space on autopilot as he mulled over his options. He didn't dare risk hailing the Eclector again. One of the very first lessons he had learned after leaving Earth was to never bother the Ravager captain once he was in that state. Not unless he wanted to spend the next month scrubbing every toilet on the ship between some very one sided battle lessons. Just the memory left him wincing and wanting to rub at imaginary bruises. Eventually his stomach made its own priorities known and he settled for heading to the nearest establishment which offered a hot meal and the chance to pick up on some local gossip. If his friends had been through here he was sure somebody would be talking about it- after all, where they weren't known for their heroic deeds or mercenary work, there were still a couple smaller bounties on several of their heads. This was usually enough to catch somebody's interest. – The establishment he chose was loud, dark, and just a touch chaotic; exactly what he was hoping for. He slid into a booth near one of the busier corners of the bar and made his order with an easy grin and a wink that sent the pink hued waitress blushing and giggling back to the counter. Oh yeah. This would do just fine. As he waited for his food and feigned interest in a little mini menu displaying today's specials he listened to the chatter around him. For a long time he caught nothing much of interest; old friends catching up on family stuff, arguments over some upcoming game or tournament or whatever, some old guy complaining about new taxes on his wares, yadda yadda. The food came, with a flourish and a 'here you are, sugar,' and for a time he was happy enough to just eat and relax into the familiar chatter surrounding him. “Is there anything else I can do for you, hun?” The clatter of his dishes being gathered eventually brought him back to his own booth. His food had been finished and whatever they were passing off as coffe had been drunk, but he hadn't overheard a single useful thing. “Oh uh, yes... Lenna.” He drawled, leaning forward to read her name tag. “I was hoping you might be able to help me find my friends, they seem to have gotten lost.” “Well that's just too bad.” She had an answering gleam in her silvery eyes. “I'm sure if you stick around they'll show up. Seems like everyone comes through here nowadays.” “I'm actually hoping they might have come through already. They're hard to miss. Big tattooed mountain of a man, hot green lady who looks like she could kill you seven times before you hit the floor- and she could, trust me!-, trigger happy raccoon, and a very friendly tree. And ah, oh yeah, you may know them as the Guardians of the Galaxy.” He finished with a wink and a finger gun. “I'm sorry, the what?” The look on Lenna's face was not the one of awe that he had been hoping to inspire. “You know, the Guardians of the Galaxy.” Peter leaned even closer earnestly. “We battled Ronan the Accuser and saved the galaxy.” “Wh-what?” She gasped, pulling back and eyes darting around as though he'd just told her he planned on robbing the place. “Ronan.” He repeated. “Angry guy with a flare for too much eyeliner. All like 'I am your judment day' yadda yadda. Carries around this giant hammer like he's compensating for something. And oh yeah, dead. Got blown up by me and my friends?” “That's not funny!” She hissed, snatching the rest of his dishes up now. “You shouldn't talk like that, you're going to get yourself into a lot of trouble.” With one final glance around herself she turned and swept away with a flick of her short skirt. Peter groaned and leaned back in his seat. So much for getting answers out of her. And they had such a good thing going and everything. His pouting was disrupted by the realization that something had shifted in the atmosphere. It was a subtle shift, but years of frequenting some of the worst corners of the galaxies with even worse populations had left him with a kind of sixth sense for these kinds of things. Right now that sixth sense was screaming at him to make a quick and quiet exit while he still could. Without looking up he slipped the units onto the table and slipped out of the booth, walking casually towards the exit. He could feel eyes on him as he went, but no one seemed to follow him out of the bar and he made it back to his ship without incident. A gusty sigh left him as he slumped back into the pilot's seat. Well that was... disturbing. And if he didn't get some answers soon he was probably going to start pulling his hair out. Without bothering to straighten out of his slump he pulled up a screen and typed in a search for “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Nothing. Nada. Just a big empty screen with 'No results found' glowing in the center. He tried again. “Starlord.” Just the same old pile of old police reports and witness accounts that had always been there even long before the standoff on Xandar. A search for “Gamora” was met with a big [CLASSIFIED]. This was hopeless. It was almost like... Like the Guardians had never existed. Like they had never had their standoff on Xandar, never traveled across the cosmos and formed into a tight-knit family; like they had never met at all. A cold and heavy dread settled over him as he considered this possibility. How was this possible? Who could possibly have the power to do this and why? And if the Guardian's had never met, what had become of Xandar? With renewed energy and a destination in mind, at least for now, Peter quickly departed the not so helpful outpost and sped towards Xandar's co-ordinants. - “Oh no.” Where the Nova Prime capitol should have been, he was met with only a blackened and burned up husk of a planet. Peter checked his coordinates for what must have been the hundredth time, but the screen remained unchanged. This was the correct place. Without the Guardians to protect it Ronan must have made it to the ground. After that it was only a matter of touching the infinity stone to the planet's surface and it was all over. The Milano pulled closer, details along the scarred surface becoming a little clearer as he circled the planet. He was pretty sure he could make out places where the land dipped drastically lower. Even the oceans had been burned away. Bile rose in his throat as he thought about all the Xandarians he had met after the battle. The tentative friends he'd made with some of the Nova Corps, Commander Dey and Nova Prime, and the smiling faces of the civilians that had come out to cheer the Guardian's and show their appreciation for all the lives they had saved. Except now they were gone. Bodies probably scattered among the blackened ashes down bellow. Peter floated silently among the stars for a long time. They looked so much colder now that he was the only one watching them. What was he supposed to do now? He was too late. As he pondered his next move an alarm signaled the hailing of another craft. What now? “You are unauthorized to enter this zone,” The voice snarled across the communication line. The cockpit darkened slightly as an unmistakably Kree kraft loomed over his ship and blocked out the stars. “State your business and prepare to be destroyed.” “I'm just passing through, no trouble here!” Peter replied quickly, “and um, wait, don't you mean 'or'?” “Identify yourself.” Peter gripped the weapons controls and sized up his options. It would be okay. There was just one puny little Kree ship. He was an excellent pilot and could definitely take them on in a one on one fight. “Peter Quill,” His fingers moved to the triggers as he took aim at the kree ship's weak points. “But you may better know me as Starlord.” There was a pause as Peter gave them a moment to let the name sink in and then he pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. “What?” He squeezed the trigger again, jiggling the joystick a bit when it produced no results. Seriously, could just one thing not go terribly wrong today? “IDENTIFIED: Star-Lord.” Came a booming mechanical voice. At the same time the empty space behind the Kree fighter kraft vanished, replaced by the hulking form a much much larger vessel. This new ship was also clearly Kree built, and it had an active tractor beam pointed squarely at the Milano. Well, shit.

Top kitchen Design & Remodeling Mistakes Funny & Tragic

Designing and remodeling your kitchen is neither a small project nor one you should approach flippantly. A lot of design decisions must be made and all are integrated. One mistake can have a rippling effect. The best way to approach any project and avoid costly errors is to know the most common mistakes and simply don’t make them.        

Number 1 Kitchen Design Mistake Incorrect Measurement

Measure twice cut once is sound advice for carpenters and anyone else who uses a tape measure.

An effort to show squeezed cabinets either side of range.

When designing a kitchen or bathroom, once you accept your measurements it is hard to change them. Nothing is more disappointing than re-measuring before ordering custom kitchen cabinets and realizing your design will not work because the space was originally miss-measured. Actually discovering it after the cabinets arrive is much, much worse.

Double check triple check. Measure with another designer or carpenter or if you are a home owner simply measure with another at least twice. Every 1/8” counts. Your investment in custom cabinetry, counter-tops, appliances, windows, lighting, you name it, is all at risk due to improper measurement.                

Number 2 Appliance Crashing Doors 2nd Biggest Kitchen Design Remodel Error

Dishwasher & range not getting along.

Similar to miss-measurement is not considering the space used by each appliance with the appliance door(s) operation and fully open individually and all open at the same time. An obvious example is a dishwasher and a range cannot be placed opposite each other one in the island and the other on the perimeter. The doors will crash into each other. The swing of every door, and of every appliance must be considered including those swinging at 90 degrees to one another. If the cabinet or appliance door cannot fully open it may preclude roll out trays from being pulled forward, as well as, blind corner pull outs and a lot of other expensive accessories not being fully accessible or not working at all.          

Design mistake #3 Scrimping on Corner Fillers

Know appliance handle specifications to size the corner filler.

Mistake 3 is similar to mistake 2 but it is driven by a positive kitchen design desire with negative consequences. Not wanting to use to large a corner filler can result in cabinet drawers that crash into larger appliance handles. Corner cabinets are often the more expensive cabinets and design errors affect both cabinet runs not just one. The solution is a corner filler about a 1/2″ larger than the appliance handle’s depth and a corner applique or corner filler overlay.

One thing is super certain appliances cannot be selected after the design. Large handles make for large errors.        

Kitchen Design Mistake #4 Overlapping or Being to Close to Architectural Details

Cabinet so close to casement the molding and counter top protrudes onto casement.

What are architectural details? They are the doors and their casement, windows and their casement, base molding, chair rail, the rooms crown molding vs the cabinets, and ceiling beams. They are all architectural details, some may exist and some may be new to the remodel. all must be considered.

Measurement of only the door or window is for the amateur, the newbie not the experienced kitchen remodeling contractor. Measure from obstacle to obstacle from inside corner to casement from outside casement to outside casement. The size of the window in-between can be noted but is really less important that casement measurements.

Painting and maintenance should be part of the consideration as well as molding & counter top protrusions beyond the cabinets. If you design cabinetry to abut the edge of casement with no wall reveal or worse an inch of wall reveal then how will the wall ever be painted?          

Design Mistake #5 Vertical Juxtaposition & Reveal

I’ll bet $100.00 the soffit was never measured or on the as is plans.

This is the vertical version of mistake #4. Ceiling beams and soffit must be considered. If they are overlooked it is probably because their dimension never made it onto the as is layout. Crown molding on cabinetry which is not the same height or depth. The crown molding must fully abut in its height and width an abutting cabinet which is taller in elevation. This picture says it all in the upper left the crown had to be notched because the soffit was not considered or not measured correctly. The crown of the lower elevation cabinet is to tall, or the elevation of the smaller cabinet is not small enough or the elevation of the larger cabinet is not large enough. All three are possible solution to this little design disaster.        

#6 Kitchen Island Mistakes

Everybody wants a kitchen island I mean everybody and sometimes they just don’t fit. An island is a work station a place to prepare meals, make bread, serve meals and also eat meals. Anything that gets in the way of those desired functions can become a big problem.

My guess is this is an island that someone just had to have. It is simply too big for the space. Look at the range. I’m sure you cannot pass when the door is down and when you pull out a hot dish you have to lift it to a 42” high counter top. Cramped and dangerous.

An island that is to narrow so that you have 36” to 42” on each side may not be a good idea but it beats and island that is too big without those minimum dimensions.

I love this picture. You can tell by counting tiles they were considering the traffic pattern. BUT why bother.

  How about an island that is the smallest island ever. I love this picture. With legs, corbels or a Federal Brace you can get more countertop space out of any island and not enough counter-top space is the next mistake.                      

Mistake #7 Not Enough Counter Top Space

Not enough counter top space. Heck half the kitchen design remodels we do are about gaining more working counter top space. It would be a crime to not consider. You have to think through it. A wall oven and a cook top both eliminate counter top space. A 36” refrigerator in a condo galley kitchen when a European 24” or 27” wide unit would have been more than adequate could provide another 12” of counter top. The same for sinks a 36” sink vs a 27” sink 9” of counter top lost.

Counter intuitive though it may be a 48” Galley Work Station allows you to have a counter top when you want it and a fantastic work station when you don’t.

Counter top appliances are the biggest thieves of counter top space. A mixer lift will keep you from sacrificing counter top space because you have a bad back and would default to leaving it on the counter top.                            

Kitchen Design Mistake #8 Not Enough Storage Space

An inventory of what you have and how often you use it should be taken. Each appliance should have its storage location accounted for. Understand your pot an pan needs, your cutlery needs. A good cabinetry line should have multiple storage solutions so that everything is in its proper place.

                                                    Mistake #9 Too Much Open Shelving or Clear Glass Cabinetry.

A kitchen is not a museum. Pick a spot or two to display your prized possessions or family portraits. Don’t overdo it or your friends and family will realize what a slob you can be. Take a quick inventory of what you really want to show off and keep neat and clean and then design the space to show it off.              

Mistake #10 Too much stainless steel.

Stainless Everywhere

Your kitchen is not an operating room or a cadaver scene from N.C.I.S.. Once you throw in stainless steel appliances it is easy to overdo it. Stay away from stainless steel anything else. Not part of the counter top the back splash. You get the picture.                      

Kitchen Design Mistake #11 Don’t Overdo Multiple Finishes

Your kitchen is not the place to have a stainless steel refrigerator, a black dishwasher, and a brass hood. Good kitchen design is consistent..                            

#12 Think through your electrical outlets.

You simply cannot charge your laptop, plug-in the toaster, coffee make etc. and have an uncluttered counter top. Consider charging drawers, hidden receptacles and angled power strips.

Docking Drawer for all you charging needs simply devote on or two drawers for phones, tablets and small laptops.

                                Mistake #13 Not Considering Trash & Recycling

The hiding of trash and recycling have become appliance like. You cannot do without it. Neglect it and regret it.                    

Design Mistake #14 Not Knowing or Expressing Your Budget

A new kitchen design is intangible. It must be developed. The starting point of that development is your budget. If you do not know what your willing to spend or you are not willing to tell your designer your budget then helping you becomes a time-consuming guessing game which may not result in an optimum out come for you.

Each designer at Signature has designed hundreds of kitchens. Each crew has remodeled hundreds of kitchen to the kitchen designers specification. We have made hundreds of mistakes. That’s right we have made hundred of mistakes over the course of 30 years. Every successful design build or kitchen design remodel firm you walk into can say the same. The idea that someone is going to design their own kitchen and have it come out the best it possibly could might happen.
