see if tumblr has anything to do with this (please excuse the deluge--this is a fun one):
what is your favourite musical that's never been on broadway? (9)
what is your favourite non-english musical? (10)
what is your favourite overture/opening number/act 1 finale? (11/12/13)
what is your favourite female/male solo? (16/17)
you have to do musical theatre karaoke. which song are you singing? (43)
if you got to direct any musical, which one would you choose? talk about how you would stage it. (44)
what is your favourite musical that's never been on broadway? (9)
I'll go with either Ghost Quartet or In the Green. I do think if Sondheim just had a little more time to keep tinkering with Here We Are, it could have been up there too.
what is your favourite non-english musical? (10)
The non-English sections of "Prayer" in Come From Away...
Okay, look. The thing is, to me the most compelling part of a musical is in the lyrics, and having to go through the extra layer of translations that don't always transition well means that I don't do non-English musicals. I'm also far more invested in shows I can feasibly see live, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say a non-English musical on Broadway would not find its audience. (Also, having sat through a few operas, I'm not a fan of the whole caption aspect.)
WAIT. Okay, um, the English translation of The Threepenny Opera. That counts, right? I mean, "Pirate Jenny," right?
what is your favourite overture/opening number/act 1 finale? (11/12/13)
Follies, obviously. If it's entitled "Prologue," then I'm in. I'm talking Ragtime, Great Comet, Into the Woods, etc. It's got to be one of the Sondheim's, right? I mean, the choices are elite: "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "A Weekend in the Country," "A Little Priest," "Sunday," come on. This is like asking me to choose a favorite child. (Objectively "A Weekend in the Country" is one of the all-time greats.)
what is your favourite female/male solo? (16/17)
"Could I Leave You?" as sung by Donna Murphy at the 80th. Obviously.
There are male solos? (Oh, all right, fine. Probably something Brian Stokes Mitchell sings. We'll go with "Make Them Hear You."
you have to do musical theatre karaoke. which song are you singing? (43)
If it's a Sondheim, I'm either doing "Live Alone and Like It," or "The Story of Lucy and Jessie." If it's not Sondheim, "But Alive" sung in Lauren Bacall's original key.
if you got to direct any musical, which one would you choose? talk about how you would stage it. (44)
What if I didn't say Follies? Would you be frantically messaging me to do a wellness check, or would you assume I've been kidnapped and someone else is answering on my behalf?
Picture it: site-specific in a crumbling theatre, very immersive. Audience is all over the space amid the rubble. It is the maximalist production of our dreams. There will be no projections, everyone will be costumed to the hilt and not a single black slip dress will be found, the orchestra will be grand and soaring. There will be a significant amount of subtextual homoeroticism (the homo stands for both homosexual and homicide, in case you were wondering) as an homage to the original murder mystery concept, but no fake blood. We're not doing that.
Some specific aspects:
Kate Baldwin Phyllis and Kelli O'Hara Sally. I've thought long and hard about this, and while Kate Baldwin gave us the most exquisite rendition of "Losing My Mind" to exist since Marin Mazzie herself, and while Kelli O'Hara played Young Phyllis in 2001, I do think that working off of each other, Kate is a Phyllis and Kelli is a Sally. We just can't have a Phyllis that's shorter than her Sally. The height difference is part of is.
The cast will be full of every Broadway veteran we can feasibly cast given the character parameters. No, I shan't be casting right now. It's too much pressure.
"The Story of Lucy and Jessie" will have Phyllis in red, as God (Sondheim) intended. And we're replacing the dancing boys with dancing ladies. Phyllis is a repressed lesbian and this is the moment in which she breaks out of the heteronormative mold and gets her ladies.
Phyllis was once in love with Sally (she is unaware of this until it suddenly hits her during the reunion-this is all very subtle and during background moments, but if you're watching, you can see it in her expression), but Sally has never been in love with Phyllis.
Carlotta is a bisexual icon who spends a lot of background time flirting with any lady she comes across. Note that due to the immersive aspects, she will be flirting with a lot of female audience members. I think Carmen Cusack would be fun here, though if we want to go a dramatically different direction, we could get Character Actress Katie Finneran to give her a real feral edge.
"Margie" and "Sally" during "Buddy's Blues" will be played by two of the old broads, not the young ladies.
And of course, we're keeping the ghost aspect with the young Follies trailing their older counterparts and just being so enamored with them the entire time. And Young Phyllis should be especially hung up on Sally, in addition to herself. Middle-aged Sally should send her into a gay panic.
And I'm going to stop myself before it's too late.

TEAM UNKNOWN 006
SCHEDULE TYPE: TRIMESTER ( PART 2 OUT OF 3 ) SCHEDULE RESTRICTIONS: cannot be paired with another trimester schedule, unless stated otherwise. for reference as to whether your muse is eligible for this event, please click over HERE.
after gathering all of the trainees ( CARTER JAEJIN, CHO ISEUL, KIM SEYOON, MIN HANBIN, and PARK HYUKJAE ), they were reunited with JANG INSUNG, one of the vocal coaches and the one they had met earlier along with an individual they may have seen in passing before, GONG CHANGBIN.
“you may have seen CHANGBIN in passing, but he is one of the coaches that helps the debuted artists with their performance skills — an all-rounder coach, if i had to describe him. he will be assisting me in monitoring and evaluating everyone’s performances with this group along with TYPE ZERO and to be quite frank, he’s one of the few coaches you have to impress if you want to show that you’re ready to debut as a TYPE ZERO member.” INSUNG turns to CHANGBIN to let him tell the group more information about what they would be doing for the next few weeks.
“as one of the people who has seen TYPE ZERO’s growth and changes since their debut, we’re looking for someone who can shine on stage all while being able to work well in environments that may require one to be more entertaining. fortunately for all of you, rather than focusing on the entertainment aspect, we will be concentrating on your performance-based skills. from what i’ve been told by other coaches, all of you have great foundations for SINGING and DANCING. however, many of you will need to work on being charismatic and captivating on stage.” CHANGBIN explained to the trainees before revealing what their schedules would be for the next five weeks.
SCHEDULE
NOTE: for all of the TYPE ZERO songs that they will be learning, they will be learning ONLY the vocal and dance ( if applicable ) parts.
WEEK 1 ( OCTOBER 14–OCTOBER 19 ): WORKING ON THEIR ASSIGNED SKILLS + LEARNING ‘HARD’
WEEK 2 ( OCTOBER 21-OCTOBER 26 ): ACTING WORKSHOPS ( FOCUSING ON FACIAL EXPRESSIONS ) & PERFORMANCE WORKSHOPS ( STAGE PRESENCE ) + LEARNING ‘GOOD BOY GONE BAD’
WEEK 3 ( OCTOBER 28-NOVEMBER 2 ): DANCING WORKSHOPS + LEARNING ‘CHOKE’ and ‘DUMMY’
WEEK 4 ( NOVEMBER 4-NOVEMBER 9 ): MANDARIN & SINGING WORKSHOPS + LEARNING ‘BROKEN LOVE’ + PRACTICING ‘DUMMY’
WEEK 5 ( NOVEMBER 11-NOVEMBER 16 ): EVALUATION WEEK + PERFORMING ‘DUMMY’
as seen from above, ‘DUMMY’ is a new pre-release song that TYPE ZERO will be releasing sometime around JANUARY. for the trainees, the coaches will inform them that the song hasn’t and won’t be released yet so they are one of the first few people ( aside from TYPE ZERO ) to hear the song. because it is a new song, they will be spending the latter half of the training learning and practicing the song. during WEEK 3, all of the boys will be learning about half of the song suited for one person and after the coaches’ evaluations for that week, they will give them parts so that on WEEK 5, they will be performing the song altogether. regardless of the outcome, the ones chosen to debut will have to relearn parts of the song again to suit with the rest of the TYPE ZERO members.
for WEEK 5, aside from performing ‘DUMMY’ together, the trainees will be having one-on-one meetings with JANG INSUNG to express their thoughts and struggles throughout the first four weeks and how they could contribute to the current TYPE ZERO lineup. during this time, the trainees will be asked to pick ONE song ( either in MANDARIN or KOREAN ) to perform. the song either has to be a song released by legacy ( you can check over here in the discographies for LGC BOYS / LGC GIRLS / BLAZING / DBSD / HARU for reference ) OR a song released before OCTOBER 2022.
ASSIGNED SKILLS
the skills below are the ones that the coaches will ask the trainees to work on throughout the training period, especially during WEEK 1:
CARTER JAEJIN: DANCING, PERFORMANCE, ACTING
CHO ISEUL: SINGING, PERFORMANCE
KIM SEYOON: DANCING, MANDARIN
MIN HANBIN: SINGING, DANCING, PERFORMANCE
PARK HYUKJAE: PERFORMANCE, ACTING
for the ones that are a part of LGC FALL BOYS, some of the skills mentioned here may or may not be the same as the one mentioned in that post. as a reminder, the skill asked to be worked on in LGC FALL BOYS is only for that project specifically.

9 People You Want to Get to Know Better
Tagged by @rat-daemon, much love!!!
1. Three Ships: So my top is actually either Hannigram or Brownham, which is Hugh Dancy's fault for making Will so shippable lets be honest here. And I will wildly shift between those two with no warning so rip. I also love Mercelot from BBC's merlin but to be honest I could ship Merlin with almost anyone and still be happy there too. Though the last one is tied with Bellarke from The 100.
2. First Ever Ship: I think it was Mergana back when I was watching the show air because that was one of the first shows I ever watched, Destiel would probably be a close second though.
3. Last Song: Work Song by Hozier on my phone and Petricor by Ludovico Einaudi on my pc! I would 100% recommend Einaudi any day, his work is absolutely stunning, Elements and Seven Days Walking: Day 1 are some of my fav albums!
4. Last Movie: I just rewatched The old guard because I have a minor obsession with it, and technically I got like ten minutes into some movie I cant remember now before I got kicked outta the streaming service and went to bed in defeat lol
5. Currently Reading: In published books I just finished Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Brite and I’m a half way through A certain Hunger by Chelsea Summers. In fic I just finished Seperated by AuthorInDistress (torchwood) and a reread of Founding Fathers by JamesJohnEye (TWD)  You should totally tell me if you enjoy The Picture of Dorian Gray when you're done prev, its one of my beloveds!!
6. Currently Watching: Also Consistently cycling through my comfort shows, Hannibal/Merlin/Torchwood but I've just started the His Dark Materials show so we’ll see if it holds up to the books :D
7. Currently Consuming: Oranges, like dudes I have eaten like six pounds of oranges in the last week, do I know why? Nope. Am I probably deficient in something? Also nope because I don't wanna think about that. Regular food? hard and tiresome, The new way is apparently oranges. this will last at least another week I think.
8. Currently Craving: All of my classwork to be done so I don't have to look at it anymore, also for my professor to just Give me an A. The ability to not need sleep, but also like a nap would be great rn. Actually I might go take a nap right now fuck my repro assignment, also would like a vacation to a empty forest so I could lay down in some moss.
Tagging: @glompto @grokenope @sanguinesubpoena @imashybear @tethered-heartstrings @nextstopparis @polishchuk @camelotsheart @emrys-merlin + really anyone interested!! <3

twice 5th japanese album "dive" review and ranking
1. ocean deep - i feel like this should have been the title track; as much as i love 'dive', this song feels a lot more like title track material, at least it feels more 'twice-y' in my eyes. the city pop influence in both this song and album is amazing, i think this works so well for twice, especially a japanese comeback since city pop is a retro japanese genre! i would've loved to see this as the title track to see the choreo they'd do for it, and i hope twice pursue this genre in more comebacks!
2. inside of me - the bsides on this album are a gift that keep on giving. as much as i loved 'with you-th', the album felt like it lacked a consistent concept, so i'm so glad that this album has such a strong identity and such cohesive yet unique bsides! literally not much else to say about this one; it was iconic and everything it needed to be.
3. peach soda - ooh i love this genre for twice! retro but with a bit of electronic funk, it's the perfect blend of familiar with something a bit new. i love the chorus so much, the in between verses feel a bit empty to me, but the chorus is so good it makes up for it. definitely want to see more bsides like this in the future!
4. echoes of heart - this reminds me a bit of "butterflies" by skz and reinforces my love for japanese comeback bsides! this just felt super lighthearted and chill, but not boring at all. i love songs like this so much, they feel like sitting in a cafe and just being with your thoughts! very wholesome and an easy listen.
5. beyond the horizon - i love this! this was the perfect intro song for this album; it reminds me of the ocean during sunrise, a little darker than the usual bubbly twice track and i think it's so beautiful. it's got the perfect bside formula, and the simplicity of the instrumental means their vocals really shine through well with this! this song also makes me very nostalgic for the 2010s, it feels like it fits that kind of era of music so well with the guitar and beat! love this one
6. love warning - ugh they're always dropping a cunty track like this (see; last waltz, go hard, wallflower, trouble, bloom) this absolutely devoured and served its purpose! i hope they do some kind of choreography for this song because i feel like it would be stunning, especially the part near the end that would be PERFECT for a dance break (momo would eat). please please please release some kind of performance video for this twice!!! i'm begging. BEGGING!
7. here i am - okay we love a SECOND cunty track?? i love when twice experience with a darker genre for a bside, it's always so well put together. i also feel like the strength of nayeon, jeongyeon and jihyo's vocals always suit tracks like this. it's such a banger and i love all the harmonies (anyone who knows me knows im the biggest hoe for a twice harmony moment). she came. she devoured. not a single crumb left.
8. dive - it took a minute for me to actually like this song, at the start it felt a bit too chill to be a title track? but then i remembered that i felt the exact same way about "doughnut" and now that's one of my favourite songs! learning that title tracks don't need to be the most energetic track of the album, they just need to set the mood, and this 100% does that! it's a bit of a change from a band that does very dancy title tracks, but i feel like it showcases their vocals really well. however, after listening to the rest of the album, 'dive' doesn't stand out anymore the way a title track normally does. it just felt a little empty in comparison to some of the other tracks in this album, especially when compared to 'hare hare', a very bubbly comeback song. it's a beautiful song, but just doesn't feel like a title track to me. this would have been an incredible intro song i feel.
9. hare hare - this is only in this ranking because it was a pre released comeback! trust that this is one of my favourite twice tracks; i was so excited when this was released after 'set me free'; i do love the mature concept for twice, but the genre shift felt a bit too sharp for them considering how girly and 'cute' their recent comebacks had been prior to its release. this felt like a response to 'kura kura' and i loved how much energy was in this track! the dance was also super cute and fun (i couldn't stop doing it)
10. dance again - this was lowkey such a random release welp but i do love it. i feel like it isn't memorable enough to be a single though; i feel like it needs an additional track to really set the mood and make it make sense. even having this as a bside for hare hare would have made a bit more sense (although i know this was released for their japanese christmas promotions with familymart) it does fit the vibe of this album very well though so i'm glad they popped it on here!

501ST’S LEGION PLAYLIST
Songs they blast while committing war crimes with Anakin Skywalker
Captain Rex, Appo, Jesse, Echo, Denal, Dogma, Fives, Fox, Hardcase, Kix, droidbait, heavy, cutup, Cody, Boil & Waxer (Yes, I added some 212th attack battalion clones because I love them and, also the whole Domino squad is here because in my perfect word, they all made it to the 501st legion, shhh)
1-Gosthbusters-WALKED THE MOON
If there’s something strange in the galaxy, who you gonna call? 501ST LEGION. Honestly, this song fits their vibe perfectly, even if this playlist is a mere joke, I feel like they would listen to this religiously, specially the Domino squad.
2-Never Gonna Give You Up-Ricky Astley
When master Kenobi and Cody join them for a mission, they enjoy this song unironically, as well as Rex, tho he’s better at hiding it.
3-You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)- Dead Or Alive
Fives and Echo dance to this together, end of story.
4-I Want It That Way- Backstreet Boys
Fives learned the complete choreography and forced the rest of the 501st legion to do so, Obi-wan and the 212th attack battalion always watch the show and clap with proudness at the end, but Boil, Boil wonders how the fuck they’re still alive.
5-Payaso de rodeo- Caballo Dorado
Ahsoka leds the way, boss queen can dance to this in heels, she even adds the little spin, she be forcing everyone to stand up when the song starts playing.
6-Welcome to the jungle- Guns N’ Roses
So, Boil’s song, yes, can someone argue that? No.
7-U Can’t Touch This-MC Hammer
Music hits me so hard, makes me say “Oh my lord, thank you for blessing with a mind to rhyme and two hyped feet’- Ahsoka and Anakin sing to this together while the clones do dance break in the middle of the ship.
8-Who Let The Dogs Out- Baha Men
Jesse: WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?
Everyone else in the ship: ‘BARKS INTENSIVELY’
9-All Star-Smash Mouth
The idea of the tcw characters as the Shrek characters is quite a concept, Anakin is donkey, not arguing that either.
10-I’m Too Sexy- Right Said Fred
Kenobi hates this song more than anything, but that ain’t stopping Fives & Heavy from feeling their selfs.
11-The Ketchup Song (Aserejé) Spanish Version-Las Ketchup
So…Ahsoka knows Spanish and loves to sing music in that language (it haves noting to do with me being Mexican ofc…) So this is her solo, the clones and Anakin hype her up doing their little dancy dance.
12-Pump It-Black Eyed Peas
Dogma be loving this song, and no one can change my mind, also Ahsoka always sings the Fergie verse, no matter what.
13-A Thousand Miles-Vanessa Carlton
Is this a dumb headcanon with zero arguments? Yes, it indeed is, but no one will ever change my mind about it, waxer loves this songs and Kix sings and cries to it every time it plays, no one really knows why, but no one cares enough to ask.
14-Y.M.C.A-Village People
Kenobi use to sing this to Anakin when he was a child to make him feel better, he even thought him the dance, so whenever the song plays the whole ship turns to Obi-wan and expect him to do it.
15-Like a Virging-Madonna
Am I dropping more dumb headcanons about Kix? Yes, because he loves this song, but not as much as Anakin, Anakin breaks his vocal chords when it comes to signing it.
16-Wannabe-Spice Girls
Once, cut up said, ironically, that this was the song of 'The domino squad' however, heavy took it very seriously.
17-Barbie Girl-Aqua
Grupal song? group song! It’s so catchy that sometimes even Kenobi catches himself signing the ‘Come on Barbie let’s go party’ line, and even if he think no one has seen it, Cody always reply’s with the little ‘Ah ah ah yeah’
18-Dancing Queen-From ‘Mamma Mia!’ Original Motion Picture Soundtrack- Merly Streep
Please don't notice how obsessed I am with Ahsoka and her wholesome relationship with the 501st clones, Rex always sings this song to Ahsoka, along with the rest of the clones as a magnificent choir.
19-Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)-Backstreets Boys
Fives has a bit of an obsession with the Backstreet Boys, but Echo won't let him die alone, so he always sings the little 'Yeah's’ in the song so Fives won’t feel so alone.
20-Mambo No.5 (A Little Bit of..)-Lou Bega
‘A little bit of Appo in my life, a little bit of Jesse by my side, a little bit of Rex is all I need, a little bit of Kix is what I see, a little bit of hardcase in the sun, a little bit of Echo all night long, a little bit of Fives here I am, a little bit of you makes me your man’ And after coming out with that line at 3 am in the morning, Anakin knew it could’t get any better, once Kenobi heard it, he knew it couldn’t get any worst.
THANKS FOR READING!
If someone is interested on the playlist, here it is!

My review as if people want/are interested in my opinion.
1 Own My Mind
I adore this song, it gets stuck in my head on a loop all the time. The sway of the song is so cool. Musically it sets the theme for the album, which I think is super important.
2 Gossip - Måneskin feat. Tom Morello
I liked it when it came out, I have not been or got really into Rage against the machines so I dont have any point of reference for Mr. Morello. I think its a song some folks should take to heart~
3 Timezone
ITS A WALTZ AHHH ITS A WALTZ. I dont really like the “running like a mad dog” but thats for damiano to know and for me to sing along to.
4 Bla Bla Bla
It is not my favorite, but I love the imagery and the sorta toxic!Damiano vibe it has going on?
5 Baby Said
THIS SONG FUCKIING DOES IT FOR ME! It is uptempo and contains lyrics to a concept I will never experience. I love the lyric video of Vic, makes me think of what maybe might have been the inspo for it. Its just so good. That riff kills it.
6 Gasoline
I liked it live, and im not mad with what they did to it in post. I do think this is a song to be sung live. It doesn’t have the same umphf on a studio recording.
7 Feel
This song gets me also. I love the song its very dancy and dancy songs are my weakness.
 8 Don't Wanna Sleep
The audible personification of mania as far as im concerned. So its great and really fun, but also cant listen if want a chill vibe.
9 Kool Kids
Damiano drunk recording this I think is so funny?? I like the live version, I like the studio, but I do think the versions should be thought about as separate entities? Then it wouldn’t trip people up so bad.
10 If Not for You
Again another waltz. I am a romantic at heart and I know I could never write lyrics like this. Oh to feel a 10th of this kind of love.
11 Read Your Diary
.....(Yandere!Maneskin) what?? I didn’t hear anything. I am also in agreement with @lifeofa-fangirl some folks need to listen to it again and...really pay attention.
12 Mark Chapman
I like the song, since I dont speak italian some of the meaning is lost on me, but I love the little blurb on spotify of like ‘whenever we sing in italian we think often of our italian fans’ and to have that be on the song named after the guy who was obsessed with john lennon and shot him makes me giggle as an outside perspective.
13 La Fine
I know a lot of people really like this song, I dont get it, its good just not for me.
14 Il Dono Della Vita
I wanna honestly put all the ‘ill ____ della vita’s together and make the ultimate playlist one of these days lol. I think this is one of my more favorite ballad-y songs.
15 Mammamia
its mammamia? I don’t know why its on the album??? I think it could have been a stand alone single and be fine, im not mad about it of course.
16 Supermodel
Same thing with this song, I think it could have just been a single and been cool. I will say as the song the radio near me plays more often than not it has grown on me.
17 The Loneliest
I think this is a really good way to end the album. I think its a good sorta pat on the back and lets you drift off. The loneliest in its 90s ballad glory I think wraps up the theme well of what they went through over the last how ever long. I think its a good perspective to end on as well. The music video was great, feels settled I guess is the word to use.

ADDITIONAL INFO
‘ A turbulent childhood left you in fear of your own shadow, a constant undercurrent of terror plaguing you that turned out to be something of a premonition when tragedy struck at too young an age. A fearful upbringing then gave birth to a troubled teenager, although you cannot remember half of what they say you’ve done. They called you unruly; dangerous. A threat. You’ve been in and out of therapists offices and hospitals more than most people have in a lifetime. Eventually, after being medicated, the trouble stopped. Voices and murmurings that seemed to become louder in the dark disappeared. Your thoughts became clear, but dull, but at least you no longer had lapses of memory. Though now the terror is back, hidden in the recesses of your mind, although you cannot pinpoint why. You’ve developed a love of things that keep you distracted and away from people who could possibly see something in you that you’re too afraid to face. Computers and technology have always been easy to understand, and easy to fix. That is until you took the job at the local college, where technology ultimately led you to a reality that was far more confusing and terrible than even you’ve experienced. Despite how your heart constricts when you see things out of the corner of your eye - brief glimpses of the dark, there’s also a curiosity. A familiarity that you can’t help but notice. You start to wonder if perhaps these occurrences are more personal to you than professional. But you’re too scared to question it; to look into them deeper. You’re not sure what’s a scarier truth: if there’s an evil attached to you, or if you’re the evil yourself. ‘
FUN FACTS Of course he wears glasses. The Velma, if you will. To the outside eye, Theodore just seems like a mild mannered nerd/scaredy cat. He can keep to himself, fearing getting too close to anyone, but I imagine he has a soft spot for his friends even if he can be withdrawn into himself and HATES being the center of attention. He can usually be found wherever it is quietest with his laptop. He wears headphones, but usually with no sound. They’re really so no one talks to him, but that can only fool people for so long. He lives on his own a few blocks away from his workplace in a one bedroom apartment with his cat roommate, Simon. He’s maybe the most lively when he’s teaching; he has a genuine love and joy for his students, because teaching is something that’s become a safe place for him. He’s good at it, and he sees the good it does in others. He still has trouble sleeping at night, though. Terrible insomnia has him living off of coffee and pre-packaged sugary goods to get him through the day. Subsequently he has a Dad-bod, but that’s in these days, so it’s cool. More often than not he may seem keyed up, or clearly anxious, but does have moments where he can actually have a sense of humor. It can be hard to pull that out of him, though, especially as he has a tendency to withdraw into his own mind.

Ranking Cinderella Adaptations
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
A dream is a wish your heart makes, and if your wish is to see countless takes on the beloved fairy tale of Cinderella, then consider your dreams having come true many times over—including this year, with a new Cinderella by way of Amazon Studios. This latest adaptation seems to have combined qualities of many of its predecessors: it’s playfully anachronistic and eschews the traditional Disney or Rodgers & Hammerstein songs in favor of a tracklist of modern pop covers; it also engages with Cinderella’s career aspirations beyond fitting her foot into a glass slipper.
But this Cinderella owes everything to the other soot-stained girls, animated and otherwise, who wished with all their hearts for decades before her. How does the new adaptation compare to the modern fairy tales, animated classics, and another fairy tale riff with an outstanding Stephen Sondheim tune? Check out our ranking of Cinderella adaptations, from worst to best.
10. A Cinderella Story (2004)
This cult classic is a clever retelling, with peak early-aughts casting of Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray as the star-crossed, Cyrano de Bergerac-inspired lovers: Sam toils away at her late father’s Southern California diner, under the heel of a delightful Jennifer Coolidge as her vain stepmother, while Austin is the closest thing to high school royalty as the quarterback with a sensitive side. Regina King as the longtime diner employee-turned-metaphorical fairy godmother who gets Sam to the homecoming masquerade dance is the other key bit of casting, but you’d have to really be a fan of the “fairy tales in high school” subgenre to get on board. Plus, the stable of derivative direct-to-video sequels makes the sparkle wear off with each new, formulaic installment released.
9. Cinderella (2021)
Kay Cannon’s (Pitch Perfect) progressive plot urging entrepreneurial dressmaker Ella (Camilla Cabello), her bitterly materialistic stepmother (Idina Menzel), and other original female characters to choose themselves over the supposed security of marriage is not quite enough to balance the cringey modern soundtrack and anachronistic witticisms. It’s too bad, because this Cinderella puts forth ambitious ideas, and any production with Billy Porter as the fairy godmother should be nothing but fabulous. Compared to most of her predecessors, this Cinderella is a distinctively fresh role model for the next generation of kids, but adults won’t find much magic in her story.
8. Ella Enchanted (2004)
This is a tough one, because the source material—that is, Gail Carson Levine’s 1997 middle grade novel—is unquestionably one of the very best Cinderella adaptations: Ella’s curse of obedience is an apt commentary on manipulating young girls into giving up their agency under the guise of people-pleasing. But the film—despite its adorable, baby-faced stars Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy—overcomplicates an already daring plot with a throne-stealing subplot (that Cary Elwes, as the unnecessary evil uncle, can’t save) and an unforgivably cheesy cover of Queen’s “Somebody to Love.” Hathaway’s voice is sweeter than Nicholas Galitzine’s rendition in the new Cinderella, but the giants dressed in early-aughts miniskirts strain even the most loose definitions of fantasy. Despite all that, it (mostly) sells Ella struggling against abuses of her obedience in a way that’s still more revelatory than many straight adaptations. Still, you’ve got plenty of better movie choices; forget this adaptation and just read the book.
7. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1965)
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II originally wrote their classic musical for television broadcast instead of the stage, though it has found its way to the latter. CBS’ second TV production (following the original 1957 version starring Julie Andrews) introduced a bright-eyed Lesley Ann Warren (a.k.a. Miss Scarlet from Clue) as Cinderella, and unlike its predecessor was able to be recorded in color. Between the vivid hues, Warren’s expressive acting, and the array of sets, it all contributed to the feeling of watching a taped performance—an incredibly charming one, at that. But the effect does come off as overwrought at times, making it the lowest of the three specifically Rodgers & Hammerstein adaptations on the list.
6. Cinderella (2015)
While visually Kenneth Branagh’s live-action adaptation of the animated Disney classic hews so closely to its source material that it feels like a lost opportunity to be more original, there are some sly plot tweaks. Lily James’ Ella is not hopelessly naïve about her abusive home situation, yet manages to keep up the mantra of “have courage and be kind” through even the worst mistreatment. Streamlining the classic songs to score strengthens the plot, with Ella’s rare occasion of singing being what ultimately saves her. Fans of the blue dress and romantic vibe will have much to swoon over, even if they’re not surprised.
5. Into the Woods (2014)
Or, then, what if I am? / What a Prince would envision? / But then how can you know / Who you are til you know / What you want? Which I don’t… Anna Kendrick brings us a relatably existential Cinderella in this movie adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical about various fairy tale characters who wind up with questionably happy ever afters—including Cinderella, who decides “not to decide,” then ends up with a philandering Prince. It’s not a complete Cinderella story, but it’s a more memorable performance in a handful of scenes than entire movies have attempted.
4. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1957)
Despite only surviving in black-and-white form, CBS’ original TV broadcast shines thanks to its star: Julie Andrews, then performing My Fair Lady on Broadway, who makes this Cinderella both an amalgamation of her then-current and future roles and a performance all its own. You can see glimmers of her comic talents as Maria in The Sound of Music—this Cinderella also has more wit than other versions—but it’s her voice that elevates Rodgers & Hammerstein’s adaptation of Charles Perrault’s fairy tale into something timeless.
3. Cinderella (1950)
Few Cinderella adaptations have achieved the same sweeping sense of sheer romance in the Disney animated classic: the painted backgrounds, the dreamy sequences reflected in soap bubbles and sparkling through the palace gardens, the surprisingly high emotional stakes that make the resolution all the sweeter. And while it’s become a common Disney trope, the requisite scene in which the stepsisters cruelly rip apart Cinderella’s dress adds a layer of wickedness not present in the Rodgers & Hammerstein adaptations, nor successfully recreated in any of the live-action versions. The same goes for the goofy mice singing “Cinderelly, Cinderelly”—every subsequent CGI mouse lacks the warmth that goes into a believable animal companion. That said, the animated movie’s legacy is somewhat marred by its direct-to-video sequels of diminishing returns, though you also have to give them props for pulling an Avengers: Endgame 12 years earlier with Cinderella 3: A Twist in Time.
2. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997)
For many of us, Disney’s animated Cinderella was a childhood classic, but The Wonderful World of Disney’s ‘90s production was the first time the story truly felt magical. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s songs were updated with contemporary beats, bridging the forty years between the first broadcast and this version: “Impossible” is one of the best songs from the show, but it hasn’t been truly sung until Whitney Houston is belting it out to a starry-eyed Brandy. The production’s effortlessly diverse casting—Whoopi Goldberg as the queen, Paolo Montalban as the prince, Bernadette Peters as the stepmother—only amplifies the universal nature of the story. Almost twenty-five years later, this adaptation still feels like the television event it was when it premiered.
1. Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)
A truly successful adaptation is one that doesn’t have to feel beholden to its source material. By opening with the Brothers Grimm explaining the inspiration behind their own interpretation of Cinderella, Ever After rewrites all of the familiar themes into a historical fiction—specifically, Renaissance-era France—context. Danielle’s (Drew Barrymore) misfortune as an orphan servant girl is so believable thanks to the cruelty of her stepmother’s (Anjelica Huston, a legend) abuse, but so is her determination and ingenuity to rise above her station. While Disney’s animated Cinderella is romantic, Ever After is a romance: Danielle disguises herself as a comtesse in order to spend time with Prince Henry (Dougray Scott), and they develop an actual relationship, complete with rejection once her subterfuge is revealed. Plus, Leonardo da Vinci is there for comic relief and an unintentional fairy godmother assist! If you want your Cinderella story with a compelling feminist arc but you’re also burnt out on the songs, this is your happily ever after.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Cinderella will begin streaming on Amazon Video on September 3rd.
