1 CORINTHIANS S.O.A.P. ~ CHAPTER 5
Wednesday, 1/1/25
ℋ𝒶𝓅𝓅𝓎 𝒩ℯ𝓌 𝒴ℯ𝒶𝓇, 𝓎'𝒶𝓁𝓁!
SCRIPTURE:
Your bragging isn’t good! Don’t you know that a tiny grain of yeast makes a whole batch of dough rise?  ~ 1 Corinthians 5:6
OBSERVATION:
I should confess, not brag...
Instead, I know I do too much the opposite...
...sometimes I even brag about confessing...
...though I rarely confess about my bragging...
Jesus is the only One I should brag on...
...and the only One I should confess...
...and then watch what happens!
APPLICATION:
Confess...
Jesus...
my sins...
Brag on Jesus...
PRAYER:
Forgiving Father God - I ask Your forgiveness for all the times I put myself and my wants ahead of Your will for my life and the lives of those with whom You have blessed me... May I always remember that all good things come from You, and that I should always give You the heartfelt credit by both my words and actions, confessing Jesus as my savior and guide and example and You for Your grace and mercy... In Jesus's Name, and for Your glory, not mine...
Confessing Him...

1 Corinthians 5, Reed's Version
It’s come to my attention that you’re actually tolerating sexual sin, things not even the pagans do. I mean, one of you is sleeping with his stepmother! And what’s more, you’re proud of it! Instead you should be in anguish over it, so the man who did this would have left your church until he changes his ways. Although I’m not physically there, in the Spirit I’m present with you, and so with the authority of the lord Jesus I’ve already decided what must be done about the man who has behaved this way. The next time you gather to worship (and I too will be present by the powerful Spirit of our lord Jesus), remove this man from the church back into the realm of the Enemy. In this way, he might reform his sinful habits and his spirit be eternally rescued. Your bragging is ugly! Don’t you know that just a little leaven permeates the whole batch of dough? Just like at passover, clean out the old, contaminated leaven and be a new, unleavened batch, which is what you actually are. The sacrifice of our passover lamb, Christ, tells us to continue to keep the festival in this way: by cleaning out the old leaven of wicked and sinful deeds, and keeping ourselves unleavened, which represents authenticity and truth.
When I wrote to you previously not to associate with sexually immoral people, or with con artists or idol-worshipers, I was not referring to nonbelievers. In that case, you’d have to leave the world! No, what I mean is, don’t associate with anyone who calls themselves a brother or sister in Christ, but still engages in sexual immorality, greed, idol worship, slander, drunkenness or theft. Don’t allow such people to contaminate your fellowship meals. Why would I want to judge people outside the church? It’s only actions inside the church we’re to judge. It’s up to God to judge non-believers. As for you, “Remove the evil from your midst.”

ENEMY LOVE?
How are Christians to relate to an increasingly hostile and alien culture? Do we respond in kind, fighting for the values we hold dear, or does Christ call us to a better, more productive way?
How are Christians to relate to an increasingly hostile and alien culture? Just as I presented some historical context, let’s broaden our view a bit to gain some important Biblical context.  Up above, we saw through the example of the Old Testament, that despite being God’s chosen people, there were times when Israel disobeyed and in turn suffered calamity and banishment under the just judgment…

Proverbs 5:1-2 (NLT). “My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel. Then you will show discernment, and your lips will express what you’ve learned.”
Hebrews 5:14 (ESV). “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”
1 Corinthians 12:10 (NLT). “He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit.”
“Why We Need Spiritual Discernment” by In Touch Ministries:
“When faced with a decision that seems to have several good answers, rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance.”
“Things aren’t always what they seem. That’s the mantra of many mystery books and TV shows, but it’s also a wise attitude for life. Many people make decisions based on feelings or judge situations by what appears to be ideal. Thankfully, God has given every believer a spirit of discernment to help us determine what’s best.
Think about how many decisions we must make on a daily basis—choices about family, finances, work. In a perfect world, each decision would have a correct and incorrect choice. In reality, however, what seems right isn’t always best. Some things that are neither wrong nor sinful may still be outside God’s will for us.
Scripture doesn’t contain specific directives about every possible life scenario. Instead, it’s filled with principles laid down by direct teaching or, at times, through stories. As we grow in spiritual maturity, biblical principles coupled with guidance from the Holy Spirit help us make godly judgments. (See 2 Peter 1:3.)
The question isn’t whether a certain choice looks good or feels right, but whether it’s God’s will for that point in our life. A spirit of discernment is essential for living in His will. Many choices that feel appropriate are actually contrary to what the Lord desires. That is why we must evaluate situations from a biblical perspective and ask the Spirit to guide us.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 (NLT) - Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.

And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Matthew 7:15, “Be on your guard against false prophets; they come to you LOOKING LIKE SHEEP on the OUTSIDE, but on the INSIDE they are really like wild WOLVES.” (GNT) My two favorite seasons are Winter and Fall! Winter, because I love Christmas, snow, carols, decorations and the like. And Fall, because I love the colors, Thanksgiving, the start of the scent of fireplaces, but most of all,…

Teaching people they can embrace sexual immorality and yet still inherit the kingdom of God is a clear example of heresy.

1 Corinthians 5:11–13
My translation:
11 But now I write to you not to be mixed up with anyone named a brother if he might be a sexually immoral one or greedy or idolater or slanderer or drunkard or thief, not even to eat with such one. 12 For what is it to me to judge those outside? Do you not judge those inside? 13 But those outside God will judge. Lift out the evil one out of your very selves.
Notes:
5:11
The temporal adverb νῦν indicates that this aorist ἔγραψα (from γράφω) is an epistolary aorist (“I am now writing ...”). ὑμῖν is the indirect object of the verb. The negated present passive infinitive μὴ συναναμίγνυσθαι (from συναναμίγνυμι “I associate with”; see note on 5:9) denotes indirect discourse, and functions as the apodosis of the condition below (“If any brother ... then do not associate with them”).
ἐάν + subjunctive forms the protasis of a third-class conditional statement, in which the action is seen as possible to occur.
ὀνομάζω (9x), from τό ὄνομα, is “I name”. The present passive participle ὀνομαζόμενος is attributive with the indefinite pronoun τις (lit. “if anyone named a brother ...”). ἀδελφὸς is predicate with the participle.
The list of six substantives united by disjunctive particle ἢ (“or”) are the compound subject of ᾖ (from εἰμί) whose subject is τις above. For πόρνος (“sexually immoral person”), see note on verse 9. For πλεονέκτης (“covetous”), εἰδωλολάτρης (“idolater”) and ἅρπαξ (“robber”), see note on verse 10.
ὁ λοίδορος (2x, both in 1 Cor.) is, “reviler, abusive person” (BDAG), from λοιδορέω (4x) “I revile, verbally abuse” (cf. ἡ λοιδορία, 3x, “reviling, insult”).
ὁ μέθυσος (2x) is, “drunkard”, from μεθύω (5x) “I am drunk” (cf. μεθύσκω, 5x, “I become drunk”).
συνεσθίω (5x), from σύν + ἐσθίω is, “I eat with”. The present infinitive συνεσθίειν is another infinitive of indirect discourse after ἔγραψα above. The prohibition might have referred to fellowship meals, not private dining (Fee). The articular demonstrative pronoun τῷ τοιούτῳ (“with such a man”) is substantival and a dative of association with the συν- prefixed verb. μηδὲ is, “not even”, implying that the prohibition extended to other activities as well.
5:12
The interrogative pronoun τί is the subject of an implied ἐστιν, which is modified by an ethical dative μοι (lit. “What is it to me?”). NASB, NRSV: “what have I to do”; NIV, HCSB: “what business is it of mine”. The present infinitive κρίνειν (from κρίνω) is substantival, epexegetic of τί. The article τοὺς substantizes the adverb ἔξω (lit. “those outside”, i.e., non-Christians; NASB, HCSB: “outsiders”) to function as the direct object of the infinitive. NIV supplies “the church” as an object for the adverb.
οὐχὶ emphatically introduces a question expecting a “Yes” answer. The substantival adverb τοὺς ἔσω (“those inside”, i.e., church members) is the direct object of the present κρίνετε (from κρίνω) and ὑμεῖς is the emphatic subject.
5:13
The substantival adverb τοὺς ἔξω (“those outside”) is the direct object of the liquid future κρινεῖ (from κρίνω) and ὁ θεὸς is the subject.  The hapax legomenon ἐξαίρω, from ἐκ + αἴρω, is, “I lift out, remove”. The direct object of the liquid aorist imperative ἐξάρατε is τὸν πονηρὸν (“the wicked person”, NRSV, NIV). The verb is modified by the spatial prepositional phrase ἐξ ὑμῶν; the preposition is often repeated after a prefixed verb. αὐτῶν functions as the emphatic pronoun (lit. “out of you yourselves”; “from your very midst”). Although no citation formula is used, this sentence matches the wording of the LXX of Deuteronomy 17:7, except that Paul uses an imperative instead of the (imperatival) future ἐξαρεῖς.

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 (NIV) [3] “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, [4] who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. [5] For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.”
Job 23:10-14 (NIV). [10] “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold. [11] My feet have closely followed his steps; I have kept to his way without turning aside. [12] I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread. [13] “But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? He does whatever he pleases. [14] He carries out his decree against me, and many such plans he still has in store.
“The Message of a Lifetime” by In Touch Ministries:
“When difficult circumstances come, look for what God is doing in you—and through you—for the sake of others.”
“Imagine going to a nice restaurant for dinner. The table is set with linens, fine china, and crystal glassware. The waiter delivers your plate with a flourish. In the middle of that exquisite china plate is a single marshmallow. Instead of receiving a delicious meal, you’re given just a puff of sugar.
If we’re not careful, our life can resemble that disappointing meal. Instead of being believers with a message full of hope, we can find ourselves with nothing to offer but a bit of fluffy sweetness. Yet God’s good news is meant to nourish and sustain us.
If the Lord is building a valuable message into our life, then we must receive everything that comes our way as being from Him. When a bad event passes through God’s permissive will to affect us, He will bring good from it. Oftentimes, a person can share a word of hope more effectively if he or she has first suffered (2 Corinthians 1:3-5). When we are hurting, we seek comfort from people who have faced similar pain. Likewise, others will trust our comfort if we have known loss or disappointment.
Whatever the circumstances, we should be evaluating what God is doing in us. When we look for His purposes and lessons, we hasten the time when our life message reflects the hope that’s available in Christ Jesus.”

Therefore let us go on towards perfection, leaving behind the basic teaching about Christ, and not laying again the foundation: repentance from dead works and faith towards God,
Hebrews 6:1
Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable garland, but we an imperishable one.
1 Corinthians 9:24-25
Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.
1 Peter 4:1
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Romans 12:1
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
Colossians 3:5
