I feel fandom would get along a lot better if there was mutual understanding that liking a character, agreeing with a character, and thinking the character is well constructed/executed are all separate (if often overlapping) positions, each with their separate tastes and subjectivities. Also: character portrayals are intended to make the audience feel things; this is separate from (if often overlapping with) analyzing/appreciating their actions and role in the story.
#I would queue this because it's truly not character-specific#but there is always something happening with a character so that probably wouldn't help lol#anyway I'm making this nonrebloggable because I am not interested in the tomato throwing atmosphere out there#do not clown in bad faith on this post or in my inbox please I will just delete it#op#it's just over time I do see a pattern of like “I think X character was wrong in this” and some reactions being “you *hate* X character!”#or that if you like a character you *must* agree with them and/or have such a deep an endless compassion for their faults and mistakes#that it comes all the way back around to removing their agency because HOW could they do any different#and if you do not give them this grace then it is antithetical to you liking them or enjoying them or even just being neutral on them#when this is often not the case#like as an Essek and Jonas Spahr enjoyer their fuck-ups are very essential to why they have any sort of “grow as a person” arc#characters *have* to have texture and foibles or they are stagnant in the story - let your fave fuck up a bit! As a treat!#and lastly I'll just say that my point here is NOT that everyone is always positive or that haterism doesn't exist.#Some commentary just seems to happen at different frequencies from each other and it catalyzes more angst than it needs to

I was joking a while back that the actor they have playing KDJ for the orv movie was too handsome for him and a friend who's read orv was like "KDJ is actually secretly attractive!!" And I just felt my soul leave my body right then
SIGHS...
Okay. Buckle in. I'm gonna finally actually address and explain and theorize about this whole...thing.
I'm not gonna cite any exact chapters cause it's like 11:30 and I've got an 8 hour drive in the morning but I'll at least make an approximate reference to where certain things are mentioned. Also, this post is just my personal interpretation for a good bit of it, but it's an interpretation I feel very solid about, so do with that what you will. Moving on to the meat of things:
There is one (1) instance in the web novel that I know of which describes specific features of Kim Dokja (especially ones other people notice). This takes place when members of KimCom are trying to make Kim Dokja presentable to give his speech at the Industrial Complex (after it's been plopped down on Earth). This is when they start really paying attention and focusing on Kim Dokja's appearance since they're putting makeup on him; I still don't think they can interpret his whole face, but they can accurately pick out and retain more features than usual. If I remember correctly they reference him having long eyelashes, smooth skin, and soft hair. These features can be viewed as (stereotypically) attractive.
Certain parts of the fandom have taken this scene and run with it at a very surface level, without realizing (or without acknowledging at the very least) that this scene is not about how Kim Dokja looks. This is, in part, due to not realizing or acknowledging why Kim Dokja's face is "censored" in the first place, and what that censoring actually means. I think it's also possible that some people are assuming the censorship works like a physical phenomena rather than an altered perception.
I'll address that last point first. The censorship of Kim Dokja's features is not something as simple as a physical phenomena. It's not a bar or scribble or mosaic over his face. If that were true it'd be very obvious to anyone looking at him that his face is hidden. But his face is not hidden to people. They can look at him and see a face. If they concentrate on his eyes, they can see where he's looking. They know when he's frowning or grinning. They see a face loud and clear. But what face are they seeing? Because it's not really his, whatever they're seeing.
No one quite agrees on what he really looks like. And if they try and think about what he looks like, they can't recall. Or if they do, it's vague, or different each time. We notice these little details throughout the series. Basically, Kim Dokja's face is cognitively obscured. Something - likely the Fourth Wall, though I can't recall if this is ever stated outright - is interfering with everyone's ability to perceive him properly. This culminated in him feeling off to others; and since they don't even realize this is happening, they surmise that he is "ugly."
Moving on to the other point about what the censorship means: To be blunt, the censorship of his face is an allegory for his disconnect from the "story" (aka: real life, and the real people at his side). The lifting - however slight - of this censorship represents him becoming more and more a part of the "story" (aka: less disconnected from the life he is living and the people at his side). The censorship's existence and lifting can represent other things - like dissociation or depersonalization or, if you want to get really meta, the fact that he is all of our faces at once - but that's how I'd sum up the main premise of it. (The Fourth Wall is a larger part of the dissociation allegory, but that's for another post).
So you see, them noticing his individual features isn't about the features. It's not about the features! It doesn't matter at all which features got listed. Because they could describe any features whatsoever and it would not change the entire point of the scene. Because the point isn't what he looks like. The point is that they can truly and clearly see these features. For the first time. They are seeing parts of him for the first time. Re-read that sentence multiple times, literally and metaphorically. What does it mean to see someone as they are?
This is an extremely significant turning point dressed up as a dress-up scene.
---
P.S. / Additionally, I'm of the opinion that Kim Dokja is not handsome, and he is not ugly. He is not pretty, and he is not ghastly. Not attractive, nor unattractive. Kim Dokja isn't any of these things. More importantly, Kim Dokja can't be any of these things. The entire point of Kim Dokja is that you cannot pick him out of a crowd; he is the crowd. He's a reader. He's the reader. Why does he need to be handsome? Why must he be pretty? Why is him being attractive necessary or relevant? He doesn't, he doesn't, it's not. He is someone deeply deeply loved and irreplaceable to those around him, and someone who cannot even begin to recognize or accept that unless it's through a love letter masquerading as a story he can read. He is the crowd, a reader, the reader. He's you, he's me. He's every single one of us.
#orv#orv analysis#orv meta#orv spoilers#beso babbles#inbox#there's also the meta that he is described with these (stereotypically) pretty features as they are about to try and 'sell' him to a crowd#which feels to me like a very pointed way to convey how 'beauty' is commodified. how audiences like 'attractive' characters more#note: made some edits to add in a couple of sentences my brain forgot in the moment so make sure u reblogged those if u do#tag edits for further commentary that isnt strictly relevant to the point i was making:#do i think that this face censorship was executed as well as it could have been? nah.#not that it was like. done Badly. it's followed through to a certain point. its established enough for me to make this post at least.#but i do think it is the one thing in the web novel that SS didn't capitalize on.#like. they still stuck the landing but it was not as picture perfect of an execution as the rest of the metaphorical stuff in orv#also. this (not the face censorship specifically but the 'hes just some guy' point of it all) is one of the big reasons i think that-#-visual adaptions of orv can never quite work. they can do the best that they can with that medium but a lot of nuance is lost-#-simply by virtue of it being a visual medium#i personally think the only way a visual medium could work would be one where they commit to the power move of not showing kdj's face#(until a certain point (of view) that is)#his face is always facing away or out of frame or hidden by someone or something else in the way#commit to the fucking allegory or simply perish

whoops, my hand slipped 😋
— (WIP) self aware! sarentu, nor, ri’nela, teylan, so’lek, eetu x player!occultist????gn! reader
due to this being a wip, info is subject to change. more utc!
LOL i only just noticed but i meant magnum* opus
new project 🤧 i couldnt help myself ;;
i named the protag haway! it means lullaby, and i figured the name would be perfect because the sarentu are nomadic storytellers (thus their voices r immensely important in sharing their experiences). the voices given to the player are very melodic imho so i thought it fit 🤭
here’s a lil sneak peek at what to expect!
— tawtute (human).
SYNOPSIS:
the remaining sarentu gather around the fire for the first time since leaving tap, their blood rushing as they recount the wonders of the pandora that was withheld from them.
but the gaggle isn’t alone, it seems — the four of them sneak confused glances at each other at the sounds of someone interjecting in a sweet voice… but the conversation continues as scripted, no matter how much they struggle.
once you log out, the three jump at the opportunity to interrogate haway. they didn’t seem surprised at the voice, so why is that? what is going on?
their explanation and what it implies leave the remaining three at a loss. how lovely you sound… they’ll stop at nothing to bring you to them, your otherwordly tawtute status be damned.
even if your presence drives them to each other’s throats.
— i might delegate so’lek and eetu to part 2… six na’vi is a lot to write for a first part. maybe i’ll write etuwa and nesim too? with a special guest, perhaps! i’ll keep yall posted lollll

im brazilian and i've always pronounced Iraq as ih rack and i always get corrected😭 i just can't pronounced it like EYE RACK
Noooo that makes me so annoyed bc you’re literally doing it right!! Eye-rack is so aggressive and for what 😭😭
I’ve been thinking about why people don’t know even the faintest details about Iraqi culture (like these simple pronunciations), and I think a big reason is bc we don’t really have any Iraqi representation yet in mainstream media. It’s not like there’s an Iraqi main pop girl or an Iraqi model or an Iraqi actress who’s getting any Emmys rn, and as unfortunate as that is, western culture does tend to be synonymous with the global zeitgeist in a way other cultures aren’t. People just haven’t been incentivized to dig into Arab culture in general bc of this “deficiency,” for the lack of a better term.
I feel like a lot of other ethnicities have had their turn in terms of being at the top of pop culture, but I haven’t seen that happen yet w any Arabs. If a prominent Arab celebrity (let alone an Iraqi one!! I’d legit just be happy w an Arab one) existed, maybe Arab culture would be of more interest to the GP (or just less of a lightning rod for unfounded criticism and ridicule) 🤷♀️
#and before someone goes into my inbox mentioning the hadids. I have no qualms w them. as an arab girl its nice to see they’re a thing#but I wouldn’t say they’re prominent enough to make people question their arab prejudice. (my opinion)#if we had an arab pop princess (just an example) I do think it would’ve caused ppl to be more interested in the culture. but an arab figure#just doesn’t exist rn. so people are none the wiser / think arab people are incredibly homogenous in how they conduct themselves. and no#you did NOT sign up for this social commentary anon but the whole Iraq pronunciation thing rly did get my brain gears going lmao#ask

I do be kinda bonkers nutso over RnS and I lobe poetry so..... RNS POETRY BASED OFF OF THE LAST CHAPTER AND FROM HELSKNIGHTS POV!!! (Plus a helsknight Doodle)
~~~
Through flesh thine dagger breaks.
I mustn't flinch in the face of pain.
For I know my friend may cause death.
You hath protected yourself in panic.
I wonder what you had been put through.
For I know that the harm is not from our world.
The dagger back in your hands.
I send you to prevent rust.
For I know you don't want to, you must.
Pouding radiates through the house.
I rush in to more panic.
For I know you need help.
Wrapped in my shadow of strength.
I let you rest.
For I know that later, you must recall the pain.
bow chika wow wow can i pretty please with a cherry on top ask whats your favorite character in hazbin hotel
Sure, Anon. I have a few.
For being in only 2 episodes, Lucifer does steal the spotlight for me when he shows up. He’s my favourite adaptation of the Devil, like the Lucifer show is cool, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s version is pretty much a creep with the standard evil portrayal that we’re all aware of when it comes to Lucifer/Satan/the Devil and all that. Those are the ones I’m familiar with. But Hazbin Hotel’s Lucifer is very unique and interesting.
Before the show came out a majority of the fandom thought he was strict, cold, wicked and more among those lines, especially an absentee because of Charlie’s dream, but we’re all proven wrong. He’s silly and goofy, an actual loving father, loves ducks which seems to be from the Ugly Duckling story. The fact that he isn’t sinister because he rules Hell and all evil, but a family guy who got shunned and doesn’t like sinners because they turned evil themselves for the freedom he gave them to do good is so intriguing and quite sad. He’s such a fun character to watch when he’s on screen. And the finale where he helps rebuild the hotel with Charlie is sweet.
Alastor is always the fan favorite for how the audience knows immediately that he’s cruel, pretty much a sociopath, sadistic, a cannibal serial killer, but he’s entertaining for his personality and how different and mysterious he is compared to the rest of the cast. A real example of a demon in Hell. I’ve watched Hunicast and it’s amusing to hear him tell dad jokes and be witty and everything. His relationships with Rosie and Niffty appear a lot more genuine than others. For his name to be Alastor and be the opposite of what it means is unique. He’s truly an interesting character and his secrets make it even more so.
Husk is a favourite, too. Especially after Loser Baby with Angel Dust, their dynamic with each other got better and the bond they have from it is nice
