Random notes transcribed from my phone plus other snippets of thought.
September 29, 2023
For the last six months I've been fairly diligent about recording thoughts that pop into my head on the Notes app of my phone--stuff that's even briefer than I wrote about in my previous blog entry. I've transcribed them here for your consideration:
I dislike packing. Especially for winter trips to Florida. It takes days for me to round up boxes; figure out where I put various books, papers and pamplets I want to take; assemble cables, chargers, foodstuffs, tools, bottles of wine, etc.; and determine how many t-shirts, pairs of sox, sweatshirts, etc. I should pack. And then there are all the other things I have to do before departing--put cable and internet on hold, turn off the water, pack the car-top carrier and more. Geesh...
I take heat from my wife for using what I call a "travel box." It's an old Leinenkugle's beer case--made of thick cardboard--the kind that was popular during the '50s and '60s. It's ideal for transporting books, magazines, headphones, chargers, bottles of vitamins, packages of gummies, etc. Totally practical.
I don't care for emogis. Never have. I've probably used them only a handful of times in texts. To me they're just crappy clip art.
I don't like to order pizza online. I much prefer ordering over the phone. It's the only way I can be sure of getting my pizza "with onions on half of it."
I don't get the point of those bulbous, graphic letters used in graffiti on trains, subway cars, freeway overpasses, etc. If you're going to deface public property, be creative and do something different.
I know there are TV monitors in every major college and professional football stadium pressbox. And I understand that some people can read lips. Still, I've never been able to get used to coaches who cover their mouths with a clipboard as they discuss plays or strategies with their assistants up in the booth.
I don't know how many times I've said this, but ... Often, when having conversation with friends, someone will say, "Not to change the subject..." And then they go and change the subject.
I used to enjoy playing Wordle the first thing every morning for about a year, until I decided that I enjoy my first cup of coffee even more by reading a well written opinion piece along with it.
It bugs me when I drive through areas where the gas stations display the price per per gallon with small letters below that say "Cash"; and the next displayed price is ten cents more when you pay by "Credit."
It makes me uncomfotable to look into the eyes of homeless people who stand on busy streetcorners with cardboard signs in their hands as they panhandle for money. I'm sure some are truly down on their luck, but there are a lot of scam artists out there, too.
As a stupid 19-year-old in college, I once borrowed--well, "expropriated"--11 bicycles in one day. I would take a beat up, unlocked bike at one rack and leave it at the rack in front of the building for my next class, at my dorm or the book store.
Sometimes I count how many times a bartender shakes the stainless steel container for making my "straight up" martini. I've concluded that the best martinis are shaken at least 100 times.
I often say that I was very young when my Dad would regularly take me to different corner bars in the old Detroit neigborhood where he grew up. Every one of them had a drinking age calendar with tear-off pages hanging on the back bar that said something like this: TO OBTAIN ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES YOU MUST HAVE BEEN BORN BEFORE THIS DATE IN (fill in the year). Let's say he took me to one of those joints when I was nine years old. Which would have been in 1956. That means the year printed on the calendar would have been 1935. Yikes!
Random memory: It was the spring of either 1966 or '67. My first college roommate (Hi, Eric), who grew up in a small town with a single stoplight in the thumb of Michigan, came to my home in Dearborn for a weekend visit. On a beautiful afternoon we got into the car with my Dad who proceeded to travel east on Warren Ave., past Lonyo, into Detroit. I can't recall our destination. But shortly after we traveled past the Springwells Water Treatment Plant on the left, my roomie looked right and started to laugh. "What's up?" I asked. The name of a bar on the south side of Warren struck him as being hilarious: The Atomic Bar. You had to be there.
Observation: The three favorite words/phrases used by young restaurant wait staffers these days are "awsome," "perfect" and "of course."
I get disappointed when I ride my bike or motor scooter through Grand Haven State Park and don't pick up the smell of bacon and eggs being cooked on a charcoal grill in the morning.
I'm not a big fan of using semicolns. But sentence fragments? Love 'em.
As a writer, I probably used dictionaries more often than most people I knew during my life. Now I love using the Merriam-Webster app on my computer or phone.
Speaking of dictionaries, when I was in high school there was a nun at St. Al's who regularly said to the class, "Students, take out your 'dics.'" You can imagine how the pals reacted to that one.
I get really irritated with Mr. Dopey Gym Guy. He's the dude who loads up the bar with weights, then walks across the room to talk to his buddy for 15 minutes, and gets irritated with me when he comes back and says, "I was using that."
I never watched a single episode of The Sopranos, Sex in the City, Orange Is the New Black, Game of Thrones or any other television series. But now that CBS has relaunched Yellowstone, right after Sixty Minutes on Sunday nights, I'm all in.
In my opinion, going to bed at 10 o'clock and getting up at 6:00 is better than going to bed at 12:00 and getting up at 8:00.
Finis.

Standards To Be Followed by Food Service Distributors & Transportation Companies
The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is passed in response to outbreaks of listeria and salmonella mainly emanating from the manufacturing, processing, and handling of food by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
During the recent Spireon webinar Job Samson, executive director of the agricultural and food transporters conference for the American Trucking Association broke down FSMA for the carriers to comply with newly laid rules and regulations.
In April 2016, the FDA finalized the new food safety rule to prevent food contamination during transportation. The rule is essential for all the freight shipping services providers, loaders, carriers, and receivers who are involved in the transportation of human and animal food. The FSMA requires the accordance of best safety practices for sanitary transportation, such as appropriately refrigerating food, adequately cleaning vehicles between loads, and properly protecting food during transportation. But the rule does not specifically address food security, such as seals and locks.
Exemptions From FSMA Compliance Rule
The shippers, receivers, or carriers who are engaged in food transportation operations that have less than $500,000 in average annual revenue.
The transportation activities performed by the farm.
The transhipping of food from the United States to another country.
The transportation of food that is imported for future export and that is neither consumed nor distributed in the United States.
The transportation of compressed food gases (e.g., carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or oxygen authorized for use in food and beverage products), and food contact substances.
The transportation of byproducts of human food which is transported for use as animal food without further processing.
The transportation of food that is completely enclosed by a container except for the food which is temperature controlled for safety.
The transportation of live food animals, except molluscan shellfish.
Vehicles And Transportation Equipment To Comply
Designed and made from material that can be properly cleaned and sanitized.
There must be adequate maintenance in sanitary conditions where the food will never become unsafe. For instance, if there are broken pallets that could puncture the products and should not be allowed in trailers.
The food must be stored in a manner to prevent pests or contamination which could result in the food becoming unsafe.
Therefore, for time and temperature-controlled food (TCS food), the equipment must be maintained, designed, and equipped for providing adequate control of temperature.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suggests protective measures must be taken for the protection of food from cross-contamination by raw and non-food items.
The managers and dispatchers should get the necessary information out to the drivers, by keeping tabs on temperatures and planning for more.
For the Planners:
Paying more attention to what is inbound and what equipment is needed.
Checking whether the trailer is washed prior to loading.
Letting drivers know about the timeframe of pickup and planning enough time for washing out
Monitoring dropped load temperature controls.
For the Dispatchers:
Communication of instructions with the drivers.
Confirmation loaded set/box temperatures as sent from the driver which double check setting vs temperature range.
Monitoring temperature readings while the load is in the transit phase and eliminating all the discrepancies.
Notifying inbound planners by making sure that they are aware of what is inbound and what to expect.
Monitoring the integrity of the seal and making sure the seal numbers are entered into the loaded and stop empty calls.
For the Drivers:
Conduct pre-trip inspections, which include reefer units as well.
Checking the condition of the trailer - air chute and door seals.
Adequate training for reefer unit operations.

Bête Noire (Part I)
Loosely based on s1ep16 of NCIS
Humming your latest favorite country song, you stepped out of the elevator into the bullpen of NCIS, cardboard carrier full of the team’s regular coffee orders in hand. Jethro could deal with your eclectic taste in music, sometimes even enjoy it, but he drew the line at that “pop-country bs that couldn’t decide what style it wanted to be,” so you snuck your moments of country bliss in during your solo car rides to and from work. Although, you put up with having a massive boat skeleton in your basement, so the least he could do was let you pick the music when you rode shotgun in his car. Plus you put up with his driving, if you could even call it that.
You made a mental note to bring up these very valid points tonight at dinner.
“Gather round, kiddos, got a little midday pick-me-up,” you announced in a sing-song voice, ready to distribute the various beverage orders that were unique to their respective drinkers. Despite your being younger than both of the members of your husband’s team, they had taken to jokingly calling you “mom” (or “mamas” in Tony’s case when he was feeling particularly cheeky) since your husband was their “work-dad.” Jethro secretly loved the familial bond you had all formed although he would never admit it out loud. Too soft for his former Marine tough guy persona, of course.
“Hazelnut with cream and sugar for my coffee twin,” you smiled at Tony, kissing his cheek as you handed over his drink. This team consumed so much caffeine, you were pretty sure they had coffee running through their veins at this point. Reflecting on your own addiction, you realized this was a classic case of pot calling the kettle.
“Thank youuu,” Tony drew out the last syllable, grinning at you as he lovingly squished your cheeks together and you smacked at his hand.
“Stupid,” you grumbled despite the smile on your face. “Where’s Gibbs?”
“Meeting with the director,” Kate rolled her eyes, taking a sip of her coffee and humming with appreciation. “Perfect as always, Y/N, thank you.”
“It’s the least I can do for our local heroes,” you teased with a mock salute. Truly though, you were always amazed with the caliber of their work and the way they put themselves in danger to save others.
You moved to your husband’s desk, placing his black coffee by his keyboard before hunting through the top drawer for a post-it note. Flicking one square off the top of the pad, you simply drew a cheesy heart on the paper that you hoped would turn Gibbs’ grumpy visage following an admin meeting into one of his beautiful smiles.
You signed it as you always did (“Love, Dub”) much to Kate and Tony’s chagrin as they had yet to crack the case of your nickname. Your nickname for your husband, Fox, was much more obvious given his silver locks and breathtaking good looks. Ducky, being one of Gibbs’ closest friends, was the only member of NCIS who knew that your pet name was short for “w” which in itself was short for “wifey”. When your relationship had become more serious, Gibbs had warned you of his previous track record with marriage, swearing that he would stick with you for life but never get down on one knee again. Taking his decision as final, you jokingly referred to yourself as his “wifey,” resigned to the fact that you’d never claim the title of wife.
You smiled down at the silver band on your ring finger at the memory.
Abby came rushing downstairs with a huge box, jostling you out of your reverie. “Y/N,” she breathed out, nearly in a panic. “Thank god you’re here. I need your help.”
You placed your hand reassuredly on her arm, giving it a squeeze as you glanced down at your watch. “I still have 20 minutes of my break, Abs, how can I help?”
“Ducky needs this evidence downstairs in autopsy,” she whispered, her pretty dark eyes widening dramatically. You and Abby had grown incredibly close throughout the course of yours and Jethro’s relationship, and she had revealed her fear of autopsy to you one night over a bottle or two of wine.
“I’ve got it, sweetie,” you smiled confidently, and she let out a sigh of relief.
“Thank you!” she squealed at your back as you made your way to the elevator, using your elbow to bump the “down” button. You figured 20 minutes would be more than enough time to drop this evidence off, come back upstairs to greet your husband, and drive back to work.
You tapped your thumbs absentmindedly against the lid of the box as the elevator descended. Curious, but knowing the strict rules surrounding chain of custody, you tried to discern what exactly the evidence was by looking through the clear lid. Some clothes, a watch, books, nasal spray. Your legs wobbled slightly with the stopping of the elevator, and you readjusted the box in your arms before stepping out into the hallway.
The dimly lit hallway with an ominous red light.
The hairs on your neck stood on end as your brain suddenly processed that in all your years of hearing about cases and experiencing life in this building, Ducky had never asked for evidence because he had no use for it. The only evidence Dr. Mallard needed was the body on his table.
Trying to calm your breathing, you began taking quiet steps backward, keeping one eye on the autopsy door as you once again bumped your elbow into the elevator button, desperately clicking “up” this time. “Cmon, you son of a bitch,” you whispered frantically, eyes flicking back and forth between the ME’s door and the descending numbers above the elevator.
The bell dinged to announce the arrival of the elevator, followed seconds later by a searing pain radiating up your bicep and into your shoulder. You looked down to see crimson red blooming along the length of your left arm before your rational thought caught up to the fact that you’d just been shot.
“Leaving so soon, darling?” A shiver worked its way up your spine, and you turned slowly to meet the eyes of your assailant. “Come on in,” he inclined his weapon toward the ME suite. “Dr. Mallard and I were just having a nice chat.”

It was nearly eleven when Azriel pulled into Helion’s driveway. Elain had held his hand the entire way over there, his solid rock in the storm. He was a wreck. He was angry. He was disappointed.
He brought her hand to his lips and brushed a kiss along her knuckles. Asher has fallen asleep on the ride over and after removing his car seat, they were walking up the porch steps.
It was always amazing to see Helion outside of the office, outside of the suit and tie. The bright green tank top and basketball shorts he wore made Azriel chuckle. If Helion was surprised to see Elain with him, he had little to no reaction, but when he noticed the carrier in Az’s arms, he asked, “You actually have him?”
He nodded. “She let me keep him overnight.”
His brows furrowed. “That seems like a good thing. A step in the right direction.”
Azriel shrugged and said, “Yeah, if it even lasts.”
He crossed his arms over his chest. “I don’t see how that construed an emergency-.”
“She’s using again.” Azriel interrupted. “I want to try and get full custody.”
The door was opened wider before Azriel had finished speaking. “Yep, come on, inside.”
Azriel sighed a breath of relief as he stepped inside, Elain just behind him. “This is Elain, by the way. El, Helion.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” Elain said, her usual bright and cheery self.
“You, too,” he smiled. “Beverage?”
“No, thank you,” she replied.
Azriel plopped down on the leather couch in Helion’s living room, Asher asleep in the car seat at his feet. Elain sat next to him and took his hand.
“So,” Helion began, sitting in an armchair next to them. “First things first- I can’t do anything without proof-.”
“Oh we have proof,” Azriel said, pulling a file out of Asher’s diaper bag. He’d spent the morning printing picture after post after screenshot that supported the fact that Ianthe was an unfit mother.
Helion whistled and took the file from Azriel’s outstretched hand. “This is...wow.” He flipped through it. “Okay, so this will help overall, but the thing I need proof of is the drug use?”
Azriel cringed. “Yeah, I...don’t have proof of that.”
Helion faltered, but Elain said, “Is there a way she can be tested by the court?”
“Not without a case against her,” Helion began, slowly. “But, leave this file here with me and I’ll dig through it, see what I can gather.”
Azriel nodded as he took a deep breath. “Thanks. Seriously, thank you.”
His smile was genuine. “I’m on your side, you know that.”
“I’m grateful,” Azriel said, honestly.
Helion nodded. “Whether there’s proof of her use or not, Az, I do think we should keep fighting for sole custody. I know it’s hard right now, and all this shit is wearing on you, but as you said, she’s unfit, and we’ll get there.”
He nodded. “Thank you, I appreciate it. You have no idea-.”
Asher chose that moment to wake up, wailing his head off, crying louder than Azriel had experienced yet. He lifted his son from the carrier and tried to soothe him, bouncing and quietly murmuring to him. Looking up at Helion, he said, “I’m so sorry, he never does this.”
Elain stood and held out her arms for him. “Let me take him so you can talk.”
Az shook his head, Asher continuing to cry. “He might need to be changed, I-.”
“I can handle a dirty diaper, I can give him a bottle,” she said with a smile.
With a grateful sigh, he let Elain take Asher, helping her swing his diaper bag over her shoulder.
“Guest room is up the stairs, first door on the right,” Helion said.
She gave him a smile and carried Asher upstairs. Azriel watched until he could no longer see them and then turned to find Helion staring at him. “What?”
Helion asked, “Why couldn’t you have knocked that one up?”
Azriel blinked. “Because I wouldn’t get to see you nearly as much.”
Helion snorted. “True. I like her, though, seriously. She seems nice.”
“She is,” Azriel agreed. “Ash seems to be taking to her well.”
“And you?” Helion crooned. “Are you taking to her well?”
Azriel rolled his eyes. “Aren’t we here to talk about Ianthe?”
“I’m tired of that one,” Helion said, dismissing Ianthe with a wave. “Elain, though? She makes you look good.”
Azriel frowned. “I don’t usually look good?”
Helion winked and Azriel laughed. He was blessed to have his friends by his side through this mess. “Yes, I’m taking to her well. I can’t get her out of my head. Even when we’re not together, she’s in every thought that I have.”
Helion crossed an ankle over his knee, and glanced over his shoulder to make sure they were still alone. “Are you in love, Azriel?”
“No, gods, it’s- it’s too soon for that,” he said, shaking his head and looking away.
With an eyebrow raised, Helion asked, “Is it? It’s too soon to admit you found a woman who cares for your son as much as you do? And somehow, she likes you too?” Helion shook his head as well. “You either need to marry her or knock her up before she comes to her senses.”
With a chuckle, Az sighed and admitted, “I’ve got some...strong feelings for her, yes. But I won’t say love, not yet. I care for her and I don’t want to ruin anything.”
Helion blinked, but his smile was sincere when he said, “How did the most cautious person I know knock up a woman like Ianthe?”
“The one time I let loose,” Azriel agreed, and chuckled when Helion laughed. “Now you know why I’m cautious.”
“I just met her and I’ve already come to the conclusion that the one upstairs is the complete opposite of your horrible baby mama.”
“She is,” Azriel agreed. “She’s perfect, actually. I’m still searching for her flaw, but I’m starting to think there isn’t one.”
Helion smiled, but it was sad. “That’s sweet, but be careful with that.”
After a hesitant blink, Azriel asked, “What do you mean?”
“Perfect,” Helion repeated. “Don’t put her up on a pedestal, just for something minor to come and knock her down. Don’t let some secret from her past come back and surprise you. Be ready for the bad.”
Azriel’s smile faltered, but he nodded. He hadn’t thought of that, hadn’t thought he had been doing that, but maybe he had been. The last woman he’d been with before Elain was Ianthe. After being with someone like that, it was pretty hard not to think Elain was perfect. She was a woman that he never thought he’d have, would have never thought he’d stood a chance with. He couldn’t help what he thought of her, couldn’t help that he thought she could do no wrong.
Before he could dwell on it too much, Elain came back down the stairs, holding a bottle to Asher’s mouth, the infant cradled in her arms.
“He was just hungry,” she said, but was cooing it down to the infant in her arms. “Yes, he was. Now he’s happy.”
Azriel couldn’t help but smile, even as Helion’s words echoed in his head.
——————-
Nesta slipped off her shoes the second she entered Cassian’s apartment and hurried to where he was plopped down on the couch.
“Hi,” he said, smiling as she came in for a kiss.
“Hi,” she repeated. “I brought takeout.”
“Orange chicken?” he asked, quietly.
Nesta just grinned and placed the to-go boxes of orange chicken and rice on the coffee table. “
They were going to go out for dinner, but Cassian was down with a migraine. He’d gone home to nap while Nesta ran some errands and picked up takeout. Now, it looked like he had just woken up.
“Feeling better?” she asked, popping open a styrofoam lid and searching for a plastic fork inside of the bag.
“Getting there,” he said, yawning as he sat up. “Better now that you’re here.”
Nesta rolled her eyes. “You’re so full of shit.”
“You like it,” he said, pressing a kiss to her shoulder.
She said nothing, just smiled and stabbed a piece of chicken and held it to his lips. He ate, smiling at her, though his eyes were still tired. She asked, “Can I do anything?”
He shook his head. “Not really. I can’t take anything else for my head until eight-thirty.”
She brushed his hair back off of his head. “How about we watch Harry Potter?”
He snuggled in behind her and nodded.
While Nesta put the movie into the player and got the DVD menu up and running, Cassian dug in, and by the time she was sitting back on the couch, he was already almost done.
“Sorry we couldn’t go out tonight,” he whispered.
She smiled, snuggling back into the couch. “It’s okay. I prefer staying in, actually. It means I get to wear my comfy clothes.”
“Ah,” Cassian crooned, eyeing her leggings and oversized sweatshirt, hanging off one shoulder. “I must say, I love it when you’re dressed up and perfect, but this cozy look of yours….well, it’s nice.”
“It’s nice?” she repeated, amused.
He nodded. “I was going to say that it turns me on, but figured that was being a little too forward.”
Nesta snorted. “You’re always forward.”
He wrapped an arm around her waist and tucked her against him. Resting his head on the arm of the couch, he said, “Being forward worked pretty well in my favor.”
She blushed and snuggled back into him, laughing when she felt something poking into her ass. “You seriously are turned on.”
Cassian snorted, “Well, yeah, your ass looks phenomenal in those leggings.”
She scoffed and said, “We’re not having sex.”
He shook his head. “My dick has a mind of its own. I love you, but I don’t want to fuck you right now.”
Nesta went rigid. Her mind was blank and she wasn’t sure she’d heard him right.
It took Cassian a moment to realize what he had said, why she had gone rigid. And when he did realize it, he began to stutter. “I mean- I don’t- I do, but I’m not- I…” He trailed off, and he sighed. “Nesta-.”
“You love me?” she whispered, slowly, turning to meet his gaze.
Cassian blew out a long, slow breath. He cupped her cheeks in his hands as he said, “Yeah, I do. I hope that’s alright. Although, I meant to tell you at a different time, in a different way.”
Nesta chuckled as her fingers brushed along his thighs, over his sweatpants. “I thought the way you just said it was just fine.”
Cassian’s smile was breathtaking as Nesta leaned up to softly kiss his lips. “I love you, too, you know.”
“I was hoping you’d say that,” he breathed, his lips brushing against hers before curling back up to watch the movie.
—————
Rhys pulled up in front of Feyre’s house at a quarter to six. He flipped down the visor and looked at himself in the mirror. “Tonight’s the night.”
It wasn’t that sex with Feyre is all that he thought about. He thought about the bar and his family and Azriel’s shitty custody battle. But he definitely thought about having sex with Feyre a lot.
It wouldn’t be such a problem if they wouldn’t keep getting interrupted.
With one last glance at his black dress shirt and slacks, he hopped out of the car and headed for the front door.
He knocked, only able to wait a few seconds before knocking, again.
The door opened a moment later, Feyre standing there in a stunning, thigh-length, light blue dress. “So impatient.”
Rhysand grinned. “Maybe so, but only because I knew you’d look this stunning.” His eyes roamed her body before meeting her gaze, once again.
“I want to tell you that you’re ridiculous, but you look incredible, too, so I can’t say anything,” she said, stifling her grin.
Rhysand laughed, quietly. “You're an interesting woman, you know that? Are you ready to go?”
“After a compliment like that? Absolutely.” She grabbed her clutch off the little table near the door before she stepped out onto the porch and locked her front door behind her. Rhysand, like the gentleman he was, helped Feyre into his car before helping himself behind the wheel and hurrying off.
“So,” Feyre said, looking over at him. “Where are you taking me tonight, looking so fancy?”
“Well, first,” he mused, reaching across the middle console and taking her hand in his. “We have reservations at La Nuit at six-thirty.”
Feyre’s eyebrows rose. “Rhys…” She knew how much the bill could be at La Nuit. It was a frequent dinner location for Tamlin and his coworkers. She’d seen the total as it was whisked away, Tamlin’s gold card tucked away inside.
He brought her fingers to his lips and continued, “And then I’ve gotten us added to the guestlist for the new impression/expression exhibit at the Velaris Museum of Modern Art.
Her mouth fell open, and regardless of how unladylike it was, she stared at him.
“I-.” she hesitated. “That just...are you sure that’s how you want to spend your night?”
Rhysand chuckled and glanced over at her in the passenger seat. “That doesn’t sound like a good date to you?”
Feyre gaped. “No, it- I mean, it sounds...incredible, actually.”
“Then, yes, it sounds like an amazing night to me,” Rhysand said, grinning slyly as he looked back to the road. “It’s our first date, Feyre, I’m trying to impress you. Let me impress you.”
Her eyes softened. It was their first date, she supposed. She felt like they had been dating for a while, now, but this was different.
They were going out.
He had a night planned.
“Okay,” she breathed.
The ride to the restaurant was comfortable and as always, they never ran out of things to talk about. Feyre’s sides were hurting when they pulled up at the valet, from where he’d been recounting a story Mor had told him the night before.
“There’s no way she could have made it down from a third story window before the security guard made it down to check the pool!” He said, opening her door and helping her out of the car.
“I like her,” Feyre laughed, taking his arm as they walked towards the stand by the door. Rhys was handed a ticket and they stopped at the bar to wait for their table to be ready.
“She likes you, too,” he said, with a smile. “I believe her exact words were Don’t fuck this up, she’s the best thing to ever happen to you.”
“The best thing, huh?” Feyre asked, one brow lifted as she hopped up on a barstool.
Rhysand shrugged a shoulder. “I’ve had a pretty boring life.”
Feyre scoffed and nudged him in the ribs as his glorious laugh filled the air.
“I’m just kidding,” he said, voice growing quieter. “And Mor isn’t wrong.”
Feyre’s cheeks heated as she turned to the bartender and ordered a glass of the house white wine.
The second she turned back to Rhysand, his fingertips were trailing down her arm, leaving goosebumps in their wake. Chills were sent down her spine at the contact, and Rhysand was fully aware.
“So dinner and the museum, hmm?” She mused, taking a sip of her wine.
The bartender sat down Rhys’ whiskey and his eyebrow raised. “Is there something else you’d rather do?”
She rolled her eyes and said, “Of course not, this is perfect.” He took her hand beneath the bar. “I was actually wondering if you had anything afterward or if you planned to have me home by curfew?”
He licked his lips and leaned in, lips right by her ear and breathed, “Oh, Feyre, I have many, many things planned for you tonight.”
A pounding formed between her legs, but before she could think too much on his words, they were told their table was ready. Clearing her throat, she hopped off her stool with her glass of wine, took Rhysand’s arm, and was led through the restaurant to their table. Feyre had always liked La Nuit, purely for the ambiance. It was sleek, modern, classy. It made Feyre feel ten times fancier than she truly was, even though the food was mediocre.
She looked around, half expecting to find Tamlin there, but she didn’t, thankfully.
“You okay?” Rhysand whispered, into her ear.
She nodded, and smiled up at him as they reached a far table near the back. “Just in awe of the decor.”
He chuckled as he pulled her chair out before sitting in his own, across from her.
Dinner was nice, but after Feyre’s third glass of wine, all she could think about was Rhysand’s promise from earlier. That and the way his knee kept skimming hers.
The museum was only a short walk away, and every star in Velaris was sparkling as they made their way along the sidewalks. Her hand was in his, his thumb lazily swirling circles into her skin.
“So how does the owner of a bar get an invitation to one of the most prestigious museums in Velaris, and on opening night?” Feyre asked, glancing at him sidelong.
Releasing her hand and tossing an arm around her shoulders, he said, “It’s all in who you know, Feyre, darling.”
She glanced up at him. “And who do you know?”
Rhysand’s violet eyes sparkled as he smirked down at her and said, “The museum curator is a close personal friend.”
“That’s all I get?” she chuckled. “So mysterious.”
“I have to keep you guessing a little bit,” Rhysand agreed. “If there’s no mystery, how do I keep getting you to say yes to going out with me?”
She chuckled. “Certainly not by your handsomeness and charm, that’s for sure.”
“So, I’m not handsome or charming?” he asked, followed by a mock frown. “Damn.”
Feyre laughed as they walked through the front doors of the museum. “I can’t compliment you too much. It goes right to your head.”
Rhysand didn’t say anything else. She simply slowed her steps as they entered the museum, Rhysand telling the young man at the front that he was on the list. Feyre was in awe.
They stepped off to the side and Feyre excused herself to the ladies room.
She stopped in front of the mirror and fixed her makeup, reapplying her lipstick as another young woman approached the mirror. She adjusted her dress and Feyre said, “Your tag is sticking out, do you want me to get it?”
Her bright eyes turned towards her and she said, “Oh, my god, please.” Feyre smiled and did so. “Thank you so much.”
“You’re welcome. That dress is so cute.” Feyre typically wasn’t this chatty, but she was quite tipsy and was having a great time. Rhys had gone above and beyond and she couldn’t wait to do the same.
“Thank you!” She smiled and sat her wine glass down on the counter.
“Where did you get wine?” Feyre asked, her eyebrows raised. She hadn’t seen a bar anywhere, nor were there waiters walking around.
“Second floor, far wall,” she winked. “They ID everyone, though, so make sure you have it out.”
“I wouldn’t mind a glass,” Feyre muttered, looking back at the mirror to fix her hair.
“Here with a date?” she asked.
Feyre nodded, flipping her hair over her shoulder. “I am. You?”
She grinned. “I am, new boyfriend.”
Feyre chuckled as she adjusted her dress. “Nice.” She frowned as she twirled in the mirror.
“Don’t worry, you’re absolutely stunning,” the woman said, clearly observing Feyre.
“Thank you, you’re like, really nice,” Feyre said, her cheeks turning the slightest shade of pink. “Enjoy the rest of your night.”
“You too.” She winked, and Feyre was out the door as the young woman finished fixing her lipstick in the mirror.
It was hard to find Rhysand at first in the sea of people, but then she saw him in front of a sculpture, with his dark-hair and all black clothing, looking as handsome as ever.
She snuck up behind him and slid her hand through his. “You look intrigued.”
Rhysand’s shoulders shook with laughter as he looked down at her. “I was just thinking about how your work is just as good as anything here.”
“Stop it,” she said, blushing as they meandered through the exhibits. “You’re biased.”
“It’s true.” He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “Your art is exceptional, Feyre.”
“My art is subpar, mediocre at best.” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear as she paused in front of a piece bright with colors. “I’m a college dropout with no life experience.”
“That’s not what Amren thought,” Rhys mused as they walked up to the second floor of the museum.
Feyre looked around the open room, at the Art lining the walls. “Who’s Amren?”
The smile on Rhysand’s face was dazzling as he said, “My close and personal friend.”
Feyre’s steps slowed and she turned to Rhys. “What do you mean?”
Without a word, Rhys led her to one of the pieces by the window, overlooking the Sidra.
Her free hand covered her mouth and she whispered, “Rhys, you… I can’t believe… Thank you.”
Her art, the piece he’d bought from her after lunch all those weeks ago , was hanging on the wall.
She didn’t realize that she was starting to tear up until she took a step closer to the painting and fully eyed her work. She remembered painting it, remembered staying up until five in the morning working on it because she just couldn’t stop. She had always been so captivated by the Velaris starlight, she had trouble doing it justice.
Now, as she looked at her painting of the Velaris night sky, surrounded by masterpieces, she couldn’t help the tear that slid down on her cheek. There was a little sign underneath it that said Velaris, Watercolors, by Feyre Archeron. She spun around, facing Rhysand full on.
“How the hell did you pull this off?” she breathed. “I mean, Rhys-.”
“I know people,” he said, his grin uncontrollable.
“But how-.”
“Feyre,” he laughed, cupping her face. “Your art deserves to be seen, so I made sure it was seen.”
He wiped her tears with his thumbs as she leaned up to kiss him. “You have no idea how much this means to me.”
“You deserve the world,” he breathed. “And I want to give it to you.”
Her eyes fell shut. “Rhys, I really don’t know what to say.”
“There’s nothing to say,” he replied, pressing a kiss to her forehead and taking her hand. “Come on, if Amren is still here, I want you to meet her.”
They stopped at the bar and as they were walking away with their drinks, Rhys mumbled, “Shit, what is she doing here?”
Feyre looked around and asked, “Who?”
He steered her off to the side, and tried to casually gesture across the room. “Azriel’s baby mama.”
“Where?” Feyre’s eyes scanned the room and they fell on the girl she’d met in the bathroom.
“The blonde in the blue dress,” he said, his disdain evident. “Ianthe.”
Feyre hesitated. The girl that she had just drunk bonded with in the bathroom had been Azriel’s horribly cruel baby mama? Just when Feyre was about to confess about their interaction, she stopped in her tracks.
She had mentioned that she had a new boyfriend, but the sight of him had Feyre’s blood running cold.
Tamlin slid his arm around Ianthe’s waist and pressed a soft, tender kiss to her lips.

As the lamp flicked on in the small hotel room, warm light washed over everything it touched. The old suitcase in the chair was fairly empty, only three or four outfits folded up inside. He couldn’t see how he’d need more than that.
He didn’t plan on being there long. Anything he needed, he could buy anyways.
It wasn’t like he didn’t know the town. He’d spent years here, laying down roots, having a family, raising three, beautiful, headstrong girls. He could find anything he needed easily.
With a tired sigh, he headed into the bathroom and turned the shower on, letting the small room fill with steam. Before he got in though, he turned to the mirror and cleared his throat, practicing what he would say.
“Girls, there’s something I need to-.”
He began to cough, uncontrollably, his lungs and body spasming out of control. He covered his mouth and when he pulled his hand out, blood coated his skin and he could taste the metallic tang on his tongue.
Glancing up at the mirror, Isaac Archeron sighed as he knew his time was running out.
