Wade's Backstory

Wade Wiley, as he would be known in later years, was born to Dutch immigrants in the mid 1800’s. Life was grueling, endless days of chores and work, to keep his ma, pa, brothers, and baby sister warm and fed. He was the oldest; it was expected. Samuel, as he was known then, left at sixteen to find odd jobs. 

But work was hard and the wages were low. It didn’t take long before he gave up on helping his family. He stopped sending them money, dropped all contact, and began living for himself.

Soon, women and drinking became his favorite pastimes, but no hobby was more alluring as gambling. Wade, they called him now, was a natural. He won hand after hand, staying just ahead, enough to buy his next drink and gal. He earned his way now with deceit, and never once looked back or felt remorse for it.

Then he met Nell. 

She was unlike any girl he met before. Immediately Wade was smitten with the sweet but deceptive young woman. He found her to be more than a match for his kind of deviant fun. Together, they tore through towns big and small, cheating and stealing their way across the West. Their destination—California, where a new life awaited them.

Their current life, meanwhile, suited them fine—until a run of bad luck, bad debts, and bad lawmen caught up with them. Wade was eventually caught and arrested, and awaited a hanging in the morning. Nell sought help and found Alexandra, an independent woman who had taken a sudden interest in the pair. Their plight amused her. She wasn’t normal, Wade could tell. She was a vampire, a monster, a creature that could live forever. She saw potential in him, amused by his petty thieving and antics. How far could he go, she told him, if she gave him power?

It didn’t take much convincing for Wade to make his choice. Under one condition—Nell had to come with him, to share in this power. And why not? Alexandra was bored and they amused her. She made them both vampires that very night, breaking Wade from jail.

The three vampires tore through little towns, feeding and stealing and raising hell. Wade and Nell relished in it. Alexandra did too, for a time. Their carelessness was soon noticed by a group of vampire hunters. When Alexandra learned of this, she made haste to leave, abandoning her fledglings. With no warning given to Wade and Nell, the hunters fell upon them, killing Nell.

Wade saw red. He went after the hunters who’d killed Nell, and believed he’d gotten justice when he murdered them all. It was only after that he learned Alexandra had left them to their fate. His anger for his sire blinded him, turning to hate over the years. Nell was his one love. Alexandra would suffer for what she’d done.

He’s only just recently gotten back in contact with Alexandra in New Ashton, their reunion cut short by Alexandra’s unwillingness to bother with her blood-child. That’s fine by Wade. He’ll pay her back in kind for what she allowed to happen. He only needs to bide his time and wait.
