Dakota Days Review

I got an ask requesting I post the Dakota Days review. The rest of the ask will be mega long so I don't want to just add on the review to the end and make it an even bigger read. So I'm posting this as its own free-floating thing.

So my deal is that in 2023 and 2024 I had enough time on my hands that I read a shitton of Beatle books (including most of the books in my big recommendation post, which I am still thinking about updating so keep in mind it hasn't achieved its final form.) I regularly talk these over with a friend and this review is mostly what I told her when she asked if she should read it or not. Either this will sell you on the book or it will not lol. I did some light editing for readability but otherwise it is mostly intact from the original post date February 13, 2023....good God, 2 fucking years ago!

Okay so Dakota Days. It's an account of John Green, also known as Charlie Swan who was a tarot reader that was close to the Lennons following John's return from his Lost Weekend.

Charlie states from the start that he is only trying to impart a snapshot of what it was like to live with John and Yoko during this time. He straight up admits that he has edited out certain parts of it to respect their privacy (and to cover his own ass as he did his fair share of scamming Yoko during this period.) He also straight up admits that he smushed together many years, events, and conversations in the book. He explains this very sensibly: while he claims a prodigious memory (which will prove not to be the case) he also says that he just spent too many years in John and Yoko's employment to recount all of them without boring the reader.

This is a very effective tactic. Charlie is deliberately telling us something that he is doing (editing the accounts of what happened) because it will make us trust him more. Being honest about misdoings you've done or will do tends to get people to like you more. This is what con artists do when they are trying to get people to fall for their schemes: they will tell you what they are doing and then they will do it. It is effective because it works. Charlie tells us that he is either misremembering or covering his own ass and because he does this we like him, which primes us to accept everything he says.

Charlie gets called up by Yoko only a few hours after John drags home. She renames him Charlie Swan because she knows John will be jealous of him having the same name. Charlie goes along with it because he knows Yoko is an easy mark; he claims in the text that he found John at Disney World of all places and that this is how Yoko ended the long weekend. Considering this is not how it happened we can guess that what Charlie actually did was pull the wool over Yoko's eyes and then claim credit for it. Again, a very effective tactic.

What happens next is really interesting: John feigns being poisoned. He's told Yoko that May poisoned him in his tea. Charlie reads the cards and they tell him "no way was John poisoned" and John leverages this to get Yoko out of the room. John picks Charlie's brain about the occult for a while and then lets him go home after a few hours.

Won't recount everything that happens next but I will say this: Dakota Days is the second half of the story about John's Dakota years and it compliments Fred's book perfectly. Fred depicted a manic John and a cold, distant Yoko. Charlie depicts a depressive John and an anxious Yoko in desperate need of hand holding at every single stage in her life. The amount of time and money that John and Yoko spend on con artists like Charlie as well as their other astrologers, mystics, and Korean herb healers is astounding. They were completely and utterly paralyzed with terror if they had to make decisions on their own. Indecisive, fretful, worried, anxious, Yoko straight up has a panic attack at one point because Charlie orders her to make a decision on her own and she almost dissolves into tears because she can't do it.

The funny part is I find none of these depictions at odd with one another. Yoko's imperious mask always hid the frightened baby underneath and John's aggressive ego always hid the broken hearted lover who wanted to be anywhere but where he was. Yoko didn't give Fred an "in" because he was a servant but she feared and respected Charlie so she could afford to be a broken little girl in front of him. John respected Charlie as a magician and hung on his every word. He didn't see a point in pretending to be something he wasn't like he did with Fred.

Charlie's big thing in the book is that he depicts himself as Spitting Straight Facts at John and Yoko. He condenses these into different conversations. For example, at one point Yoko takes John to Japan for a few months because she wants to convince him to live there full time. All of their clothes are packed according to what Charlie's tarot cards tell them are lucky to take. Yoko asks him to cast spells to keep John in a good mood. They plan out their journey to follow certain directions based on Japanese numerology that calculates the luck of cardinal directions. (Charlie cheerfully admits that this is outside of his education so he can't give an opinion on it. This is part of his set up, he doesn't have a problem admitting his weaknesses which makes him come off as more honest than he really is.)

It all goes wrong within two weeks: John hates Japan. Absolutely hates it. He hates having to entertain Yoko's family. He hates the hotels they are in. Yoko calls Charlie on the verge of tears and tells him that John is humiliating her in front of her family -- apparently Yoko's mother and sister called Yoko out on her bullshit and they accused her of accomplishing nothing with her art. (Holy shit, based?!) Yoko is desperate for John's wealth and status to impress her mother and tells Charlie, "I know what they say about me, they say that all I did was marry John and spend his money!" Which is of course absolutely true.

Yoko is desperate to win her mother's favor because she wants Sean to get a sizable piece of the inheritance but she was so disgusted with Yoko that she wouldn't even acknowledge Sean. (Brutal.) Yoko takes this personally because her sister Setsuko married a Westerner, a diplomat, and Yoko dissolves into hysterics over the phone demanding that Charlie tarot read for new, luckier clothes and have them air mailed to them. As far as I know, Charlie did it because it was an order and Yoko was paying his bills.

It gets worse though because John starts shuffling around like a zombie, moaning, whacking his head against the walls, etc. He tells Charlie that he's pretending to be dead. (I actually think I know what John was doing -- he probably absorbed some of Japan's pop culture about ghosts and he started imitating it.) This freaks out Yoko's family and her mother asked what the hell she was doing bringing this fucked up white guy to Japan. Charlie depicts himself as being the only person John can vent to which is something that I actually believe even though it probably didn't go down in precisely this way.

When Yoko tells John that they're going home soon, John perks up. He starts wooing Yoko's mother and makes nice with her. The funny part is that after all that, John actually succeeded in making Yoko's mother like him! Of course Yoko calls Charlie, again almost in tears, and tells him "John is doing it all wrong, he's being friendly with her, he's not holding her at a distance, he's buying her things and taking her out to fancy eateries!" Yoko is depicted as flat out hysterical in this conversation, enraged and upset that John charmed his way into her mother's good graces instead of making her submit by being ice cold and imperious (aka acting like Mimi) which dissolves her into anguish. And then, at the end of it all, Charlie says that Yoko is being ridiculous and it's a good thing that John is finally getting along with her mother. (Hittin' hard with that street wisdom!) Yoko is very bitter in response. After that chapter I thought, "man Charlie is putting up with a lot huh."

The entire book goes this way. It depicts a John that will make grand gestures towards Yoko (he has Charlie perform a "druidic" marriage ceremony to reaffirm his marriage to Yoko and Charlie has a GREAT time making shit up and forcing John to gather all this bullshit stuff that has nothing to do with Celtic traditions, Charlie's account is so so gleeful about making John dance like a monkey) but actively loathes her the rest of the time. Charlie outright states that their relationship is unhappy.

For example, when Sean was born, John was crazy with worry and made up the Dakota to be more comfortable for Yoko and the baby. But when Yoko finally came home she immediately handed Sean to the nanny (which John HATED, he tried to make her pick Sean back up because he was so upset) and went to her room after a huge fight with John. John then sat down with Charlie and bitterly vented about the fact that he knew Yoko didn't appreciate him and that he was furious that she smoked through her pregnancy and that she wasn't interested in Sean. He accuses her of making Sean sick which is probably true considering Yoko was probably on heroin through out the pregnancy! John is actually kind of stunning here because he is utterly pissed off at Yoko for putting Sean's health at risk and then snubbing John when she finally gets home. His breakdown when Yoko comes home is incredible. They have a baby that she hyped up to Charlie as a Messiah and then she didn't want him. And it still didn't make her love John. The despair in his words.

A lot of the conversations that Charlie depicts follows this pattern. At one point John gets so angry about Yoko's coldness that he picks a fight with her, gets in her face, and just starts screaming at her. She runs out of the room crying because she's frightened of him and then calls Charlie to do a tarot card reading on why John was so mad at her. Charlie speculates it's because she doesn't communicate well with John and he was trying to shake something loose. She goes on a long rant about why this can't possibly be the case because she's only doing what's best for him so please Charlie read the cards…. of course when Charlie spoke to John, John replied that he was angry that Yoko speaks Japanese because he doesn't understand what she's saying to the servants and he thinks that they're talking about him. He's paranoid and angry that she's doing something that he can't get involved with. So he started screaming at her and throwing cigarette packets at her.

At times like this, when Yoko and John are fighting, Charlie takes on an interesting role. He will tell them hard truths about their relationship that they don't like. When Yoko whines that John is being too independent in 1979, Charlie tells her that this is a good thing and that she should be happy that John doesn't need to be managed. He also tells her that she and John will be happier if they are independent of each other. This bounces off Yoko completely and she whines (Yoko is VERY childish in this book) that this isn't possible or safe because John is too stupid (!!) and naive (!!) to make decisions on his own.

Charlie very deliberately depicts himself almost as a marriage counselor to them. You can see his prodigious perfect memory fails him at these junctures because when he relays conversations, John and Yoko don't sound like themselves most of the time. But the funny part is, I totally believe it. I actually do think that Charlie Swan had moments where he gave his unvarnished opinion about JohnandYoko to John and Yoko. He could do this safely for a few reasons:

1) He knew they considered him superior to them. He successfully dug a foothold in their minds and had them both totally convinced that he was legit. They couldn't throw him out because he was their closest tarot reader and it looks like he also had a legitimate head for business because he was able to give them some good financial advice. All of this meant that they were in awe of him and neither of them wanted to go against what he said. They were completely at his mercy. In a way I think it's lucky that Charlie wasn't more malicious because he could have manipulated John and Yoko into doing some depraved shit if he felt like it. They both worshipped him completely. Independent sources verified that John called Charlie "the Oracle" and it wasn't all a jest.

2) Conmen are incredibly good at reading people. They see our weaknesses and they understand them. He had John and Yoko sized up the moment he met them. He realized John and Yoko were both inherently childish, very credulous, willing to believe anything, and that they would only take the easy way out. They wanted self improvement to come only at the cost of their check books. They loved spending money (I think they both had shopping addictions -- I know because I have a shopping addiction) and they didn't want to be disciplined in the slightest. In fact Charlie depicts several moments where outside parties force John and Yoko to be disciplined and they both react like children being forced to sit in the time out chair.

3) John and Yoko, being very petulant, lazy, and weak at this stage of their lives, were totally impervious to criticism. John at least admitted that he knew Charlie was right about certain things but Yoko always had excuses for why she couldn't give John a longer leash/respect him as her life partner, be nice to her mother (Charlie at one point straight up asks why she's being such a bitch to her mother and Yoko is full of pathetic excuses), spend time with her baby, etc. (She couldn't buy farmland on her own because she didn't know how to ascertain if any of the property was good, so she had Charlie do readings so she didn't have to take responsibility for it.) John and Yoko did not want to shoulder any kind of responsibility for anything at all. They are both depicted as sleepwalking through life, becoming outraged when anything temporarily waylaid them.

You could give them as many hard truths as you wanted and it would never take because they will never ever accept it or act on it or own their mistakes. John and Yoko are often at odds in the book, screaming and arguing with each other, John fucking things up on purpose for Yoko's family, but when it comes to Growing The Hell Up, they were a united couple saying "no the hell we will not!"

This is reading between the lines now but I think Charlie is straight up laughing at them at some points and he's letting us in on the joke. He knows that so long as they remain petulant and undisciplined, he will always have a job. So he can tell them honestly to their faces that they are bad parents, that they are a terrible couple, that John is a sullen asshole and Yoko is a whiny bitch, and they will never ever fire him. They will argue with him but Yoko will have him back in her bedroom in 15 minutes to get him to read tarot cards for her again.

A few things I found interesting:

Sean is not portrayed at all in the book. John once describes Sean as overly quiet and meek especially around John and John says it's because he knows Sean is frightened of him. Interesting that this is at odds with Fred's portrayal of Sean. However I actually feel a little soft towards Charlie Swan on this because I think he did it to protect Sean, the way he said he would protect the Lennons' privacy at the beginning of the book. I legit think he was shielding Sean because Sean under 18 when Charlie published this. I think he didn't want Sean to have to wrestle with being depicted in a memoir at that age. The Dakota situation is so fucked up that I legit believe that this expert scam artist might have been in the only moral person on John and Yoko's payroll. I say this because Charlie is absolutely fearless towards John and Yoko in this book so he clearly didn't give a shit about being sued for libel. So IMO he did it to protect Sean because Sean was only a child.

John goes in a 15 month depression in 1978 because Sean once asked him (after seeing one of their poor cats fall out of a window) what happened to the cat that died. John tells him that the cat went to the Land of the Dead because it fell, explaining that nothing can survive a fall out of a window that high. Sean apparently thought about it and said "then Daddy, why haven't you walked out the window?" Jesus Christ.

Charlie scolds John for being a shitty parent and tells him that Sean is just a kid and that he doesn't understand what he's saying. He's just repeating things that he's heard around the house, and if you read between the lines you can feel Charlie judging John and Yoko because Charlie understands that this exposure to the occult is fucking Sean up. John becomes very surly and asks him "how the hell do you know" to which Charlie replies "I studied art therapy and child psychology in college for my teaching degree." (Independent verification has proven that this is true!) John sinks even deeper into a funk that yet another person is proving to be more knowledgeable about John's children than John himself, and rolls over in bed, beginning a 15 month period where he won't see anyone. He just lays there watching tv with the sound off.

Yoko is constantly on edge. She's obsessed with what people think of her. Charlie describes 1979/80 as being very trying because Yoko constantly repeating the same questions for Charlie to read for, trying to divine what stories journalists will write about her next.

John is similarly obsessed with having a positive PR image. He's deeply upset that no one liked his Rock n Roll or Shaved Fish albums (because they don't have new material.) John spends an entire chapter moaning that he hates his audience because they don't love him enough. Then he admits that he thinks he owes them new material but that he won't commit to anything without having a decent stock of songs to burn through. Then he swivels back to piling more blame onto his audience and continues bitching that they don't love him enough to make up for the anguish that he feels all the time. He piled a lot of blame and resentment onto The Public for not being able to "fix" his sadness.

At one point Yoko wants to buy blessings/curses from an actual witch so they go to Brazil. They find a bruja and Charlie intimates to the audience that brujas are expert con artists in a class of their own. He relates that a bruja once sabotaged a building project at which time the builders invited her onto the property to do an """exorcism""" from which she made a tidy profit and they were able to resume building. (Charlie does not depict it in precisely this way but he relates the story in such broad ""magical"" terms that you can see him grinning, pointing, winking, and nodding at you from across the room. Charlie made it as obvious as he possibly could that he was totally fucking with these people and that he knew when other magicians were fucking with people as well.)

Yoko has to sit through a week of a Brazilian woman putting her through fake and expensive rituals, all while putting on a fake Jamaican accent??? Yoko is so dumb and desperate that she doesn't see through it. Charlie is incredibly contemptuous through out the section. He does have an interesting "magic" battle with the bruja (here called Nora, her actual name was Lena) where they size each other up and the bruja agrees to take Yoko on as a client. Eventually Yoko gets cold feet and begs Charlie for a way to get her out of the rituals because she's scared that Nora mentioned a "blood sacrifice" and Yoko doesn't want to kill someone.

To which Charlie replies: "Yoko, why don't you just tell Nora how you feel? You're the client, if you don't want to make a blood sacrifice then just ask Nora to do something different. I don't think she's going to kill a person but if you're that worried then you can tell Nora about your concerns and she'll either change it or explain what will happen. You're paying her, remember?"

Yoko dissolves into more hysterics. She's scared the bruja will put a curse on her or Sean or John. She's too anxious to ask for clarification or help. Charlie rolls his eyes through the entire section.

Then the actual ritual happens, Nora kills a dove (poor thing) and then tells Yoko to sign her name to sell her soul to…something? I actually didn't understand what, though Charlie told Yoko "it's impossible for you to sell your soul so just go along with it dumbass."

But Yoko melts down. She can't do it. She begs Charlie to sign on her behalf and it sounds like she was actually crying because she was so scared. Charlie and Nora both sigh but Charlie signs the document and Nora goes "okay, done!"

Yoko then asks Charlie "Hey did you sign Charlie Swan or John Green?" To which Charlie replies, "what makes you think I signed either of those names?" Yoko freaks out and follows him around going "What name did you sign?? Whose soul did you sell??? Charlie?!!!! Charlie!!!!" But he never tells her lmao. He is so fucking contemptuous of her, it's amazing. This sequence is Charlie Swan rubbing his superiority in Yoko's face with utter glee, and he completely gets away with it. She's too scared to argue with him.

Obviously Charlie doesn't talk about everything here. For example, he and Sam Green both pulled a fast one on Yoko by counterfeiting a painting and selling it to her -- her own boyfriend! It was a complete success, she paid them both handsomely for it. He doesn't talk about that here. But it's clear from the outset IMO that he lies his ass off about tarot reading through out the entire book and is able to do as well as he does because he does actually have some good business sense.

I have to be honest: I respect the fuck out of Charlie Swan. This man is a king. He scammed John and Yoko out of millions. He did so well that he could tell them how awful they were to their faces and they had no choice but to swallow it whole. They didn't have the sac to stand up to him. And he was kind enough to write this book and show us how he did it: by taking advantage of their fear, petulance, and refusal to grow up. Dakota Days is an amazing book.

I have decided that the rocknroll industry is one big trailer park and John and Yoko had the biggest trailer. John is straight up wandering around in a robe and curlers reading the astrology and Dear Abby sections of the newspaper, Yoko is knocking back forties wondering when she can upgrade to the younger model. Sean is their poor kid with a learning disorder that is doing the pyromaniac thing. Going to Swiss boarding school (so that Yoko didn't have to be reminded of John) is probably what straightened him out and saved him.

Not trying to diss trailer parks, I met a lot of nice people who lived in them when I worked insurance, so pulling more from sitcom trash here. But John and Yoko fought, a lot, like these types of couples always do (that anecdote of Pete Shotton's second phone call where Yoko is screaming her head off in the background. I live next to a trashy family like this.) Who knows what Sean heard and what he repeated because he was so young.

This is the book that convinced me that John retreated into the Dakota out of shame. He knew that being with Paul was the best thing that ever happened to him, the only good thing, and he fucked it up with drugs and untreated mental illness. Which sadly has to be hung around his own neck. He blew his life up for no reason and he hid because he knew that.

John thought there were only two options: go back to Yoko or eat crow and go back to Paul. He couldn't stand either but at least with Yoko he didn't have to dance for the press. It never occurred to him that he had options and could do anything.

Description: After your fight with James, you're left entirely unsure how to act. However, your friends, and the stars, have some (un)helpful suggestions.

Notes: theres some astrology in this chapter, but I didn't specify anything about the readers signs, only the readings. however, it's basically guaranteed that if you look up your own stuff it won't match whats in the fic. If it's any consolation, the birthday I chose for the writing process is nowhere near mine lol

You fixed your eyes upon Flitwick at the head of the room, trying to ignore the fact that James had been staring at you for the entire period. Tuesday’s were always theory days, dull and tedious even when you were in a receptive mood. This morning, you were taking in only about half the content of the lecture, your fingers continuously tapping against your desk while Lily frowned at your fidgeting. Your hopes that James would act like you didn’t exist were clearly not based in any sort of reality, though you should have expected as much. This was James: utterly relentless no matter what.

You kept your head down as you packed up your books, catching the four boys across the room exiting their pew from the corner of your eye. You were free, at least for the time being.

“Just go on without me,” you said, turning to Lily. “I want to talk to Flitwick about joining dueling club.”

She gave you a small smile, throwing her bag over her shoulder as you each moved to leave. “I think that’s a good idea. It’s probably better than going to Taurisus directly. This way, you’ll get some real practice in.”

“Yeah,” you chuckled, “I just have to hope I don’t embarrass myself too much.”

As you walked down the steps, Lily slipping out the door with a promise to see you later, your stomach dropped. James was leaning against the side of the pew, his eyes towards the door. You clenched your jaw, ripping your gaze away as you passed him, heading towards Flitwick’s desk at the back of the room. The students began to dissipate, leaving you and James alone, save for your Professor, who had yet to notice your presence. Your posture stiffened as you heard James walking behind you, his shoes clicking against the stone floor.

With a wave of his wand, Flitwick organized a pile of parchment on his desk before scurrying around a stack of books. “I’ll be with you in a moment!”

You nodded, your head growing light when James came to stand a meter away. You played with your tie, your head bent towards your feet as you waited for Flitwick to finish.

“Hey—” James began in a low voice, though Flitwick came skirting around his desk before he could finish.

“I apologize,” Flitwick said, smiling at each of you. “What is it that you two need?”

“I wanted to talk with you about joining dueling club,” you said quickly, the need to leave as soon as possible growing stronger and stronger as the seconds passed.

“I’m pleasantly surprised, Miss L/N,” Flitwick said, his smiling growing brighter. “We meet today after classes in room 1L. You are welcome to stop by.”

“Thank you, Professor,” you said, spinning around to leave. “I’ll see you this afternoon.”

You hurried out of the classroom and into the corridor, darting towards the main castle with a racing heart. Everything felt like a blur, the image of James’s face nearly burned into your retinas. You didn’t have Astronomy until 11:45, though you knew Sinistra would let you sit and do school work until then, or in the worst case scenario, make you polish the telescopes. No matter what, you needed to go somewhere you could breathe a little easier, preferably without the possibility of running into James.

Just when you thought you had escaped the suffocation of being around him, your name was called out behind you. Your breath caught in your throat, quickening your pace despite the urge to stop. You could hear him bolting down the corridor, soon skidding directly in front of you and forcing you to halt.

“You’re joining dueling club?” James asked with wide eyes.

“Yes,” you said plainly, taking a step around him and continuing towards the Astronomy Tower. Your hands began to sweat, your ears buzzing as he walked alongside you.

“Why?”

“You know very well why.” You hoped he would take a hint given your obvious irritation, though he only shook his head at your answer, seemingly with no plans to leave your side.

“I’ll teach you how to duel,” he said. “Or Sirius, or Remus, they’re both just as good as I am. You don’t need Flitwick to—”

“Don’t you have practice or something?” you huffed, taking a right down another corridor.

James swerved around a group of students, ignoring a few of them when they said hello. “No, Ravenclaw took the spot.”

“Well, surely you have some studying to do.”

“This is the way to the Common Room,” he paused, nearly crashing into a pillar. He turned back to you, scratching his head. “I’m sorry about what I said this weekend.”

“Just leave it, James,” you muttered, picking up your pace again.

“Won’t you just talk to me for a minute?”

“We all ready tried that,” your annoyance was growing, though nothing deterred him.

“We can’t just—” James faltered, pushing through another crowd. You moved around the edge, hugging the wall in hopes of losing him. You had no such luck, for he quickly moved beside you again. “Tell me what to do to fix—”

“Nothing,” you answered, cutting him off. “Do absolutely nothing.”

You turned to move up a staircase leading to the fifth floor, flying up without looking back. James did not bother to follow, watching as you disappeared around the bend. At least he could follow instructions.

Professor Sinistra let you work alone in the Astronomy classroom, not questioning why you wanted to be here rather than the myriad of other rooms in the castle better suited for your purposes. You had simply thanked her politely, quietly making your way up the tower, gazing above you at the charmed ceiling full of twinkling stars.

You decided to begin on your essay for Charms, getting a head start for once on your assignments. Lily would be more than pleased when you told her, for she was likely doing the same. After you had gotten through a fair few pages of parchment, you dropped your quill, shaking out your aching hand. A blot of ink began to spread on your paper, absorbing a few letters into its black mass. You sighed, sitting back in your chair as you stared at the ruined paper.

A few models in the corner of the classroom turned slowly around themselves, the sun floating at its center. All around you were charts and diagrams, many older than your great-great-grandparents, crafted by the hands of former Hogwarts professors. It was one of your favorite classrooms in the castle, glittering with the intriguing mystery of the night sky. On the wall was a row of tall bookshelves, all filled with similar looking tomes, extremely thick and bound in leather. On each of the spines read a year, dating all the way back to the founding of Hogwarts. You had learned about their contents first year, complete with a project having to analyze a specific page. They were recordings of all celestial activities occurring in the northern hemisphere, a task bestowed upon the current Astronomy professor. The position of every planet, their visibility to the naked eye, meteor showers, the tilt of the earth, solar flares, everything was meticulously recounted for future study.

You had avoided looking in those books since April of fifth year. Before that, you had gone and looked at four specific dates, Lily, Marlene, Dorcas, and your own birthdays, memorizing your birth charts “just in case of an emergency!” Although your friends were rather supportive of your love for Divination, astrology was not something they put much credence in. It was a fickle thing, as were all forms of Divination, though you were not one to doubt the stars.

This was precisely why you hadn’t dared open one of the tomes in well over a year. At first it was due to the fact that you had no interest meddling in your mates love life. Later on, the reasons changed considerably. Now, the temptation was too strong, the desire to know one way or another enough to either rip you to pieces or grant you such glorious elation you may go mad with happiness. All you had was the date, the twenty-seventh of March, 1960. It was enough to tell you Aries and nothing else, which is the way you had planned on keeping it.

The shelf seemed to stare at you, inviting you to walk over, to run your hands over the spines, to pull one out and open it up. You glanced over at one of the models, it was around eleven from what you could tell, plenty of time to peruse a volume and scribble your findings down on a piece of scrap parchment.

Your eyes shot back down towards your work, your hands coming to rest on the desk as you glared into the ink blot. You closed your eyes, remembering what Quattlebaum had once said in class, sparking a great deal of interest in you at the time, “The stars can speak…though their language may seem anachronistic and illegible to untrained ears. Do not fret! You will learn to appreciate their ever changing nature, for it is like our own, forever shifting to accommodate the bends of time.”

The bends of time; was that all this was? You, James, the fish, the war? Was it all just the ebb and flow, the wax and wane of life beating on and on until you died? You rubbed your temple, laughing at your own existential pondering. This was outrageous, absolutely ludicrous…right?

You stood, your chair scraping against the floor as you made a b-line towards the shelf, your eyes frantically running over the dates written onto the sides. You followed the years down the line, 1973, ‘72, ‘71, kneeling to reach the 60s. There it was, 1960, your golden year. Before you could talk yourself out of it you pulled the heavy book from the shelf, cradling it in your arm as you went back over to your desk, pushing your quill and parchment out of the way to make room. You immediately opened it, flipping through the pages to find the right month. In a moment, the twenty-seventh of March was presented in front of you, complete with all the information you needed and more.

For a brief, fleeting moment, you reconsidered. What good would come of it? What were you even hoping to find? Was it even right to analyze the chart of an unrequited love?

You scanned the pages, running your finger down the paragraphs, eyeing the neatly crafted diagrams littered between the words. He was an Aries, though that you already knew. You could also determine the compatibility of sun signs without having to consult a reference book, unintentionally doing so every time you learned someone’s birthday. Your sun signs did show a good deal of compatibility: shared weakness when it comes to boredom, each independent, he may become impatient with your inaction, we can’t go on like this. All of this you were well aware of, though it mattered little in comparison to the whole chart.

You pulled out a roll of parchment, grabbing your quill so you could jot everything down. Moon in Aries, interesting, Mercury and Venus in Pisces, even more intriguing…Jupiter in Capricorn…Lilith in Gemini. Soon, you had everything written down, other than what you couldn’t make out with a lacking birth time. Unfortunately, there was no ordinary way of asking someone whom you were currently trying to avoid what time they were born. Besides, he probably had no idea. When you had asked Lily, she looked at you sideways for a full ten seconds.

Without an astrology reference book with you, you were unable to get a full reading. A small part of you hoped you’d lose interest by the time you made it to the Library, realizing that this was an incredibly foolish idea in the first place which could only result in further heartache. You quickly returned the astronomy book back to the shelf, slipping your parchment back into your bag, your leg bouncing underneath the desk.

“Settle down, settle down,” Professor Flitwick began, standing on the long, narrow platform at the center of the room. “We have a new member of our club.” He motioned to you, standing amongst the group of students below, many of which were notably younger than yourself. Sheepishly, you glanced around at them, trying to make yourself smaller. “I’d like you all to welcome Miss L/N with the proper dueling club spirit, which is…”

“Respect, courtesy, and discipline,” the students called out in unison. Near the back of the room, Professor Taurisus said it as well with a large, overzealous grin.

“Very good,” Flitwick said, pacing down the platform. “It’s down to business, then. As you know, last week we covered the Tongue-Tying Curse, which may be a bit advanced for some of you, so do not be too hard on yourself if you are yet to master it. I’d like to begin this week's meeting with a few duels employing this curse,” he paused, gazing across the group of students. “Miss Waters, you had some luck with it last week.”

Agnes Waters, a fourth year Gryffindor, nodded her head enthusiastically, moving through the crowd to step up onto the platform.

Flitwck’s eyes danced across the students once more, landing on yourself. “Miss L/N, would you care to demonstrate? I’m sure you will be able to provide some excellent insight on this fifth year spell.”

With a shaky breath you nodded, nervously stepping up onto the platform opposite Agnes.

Flitwick stood in the center, glancing between each of you. “All right, take your positions.”

“Professor,” you began, your wand still at your side. “Am I allowed to use upper level spells, or should I only use fifth year and below?”

“I don’t think that will be a problem,” Taurisus said from his corner, causing a few giggles to ripple throughout the students.

Without responding, Flitwick stepped off the platform, leaving you and Agnes to take your positions and begin the duel.

You left dueling club with a bit more pride than when you arrived, though you couldn’t be too cocky about beating a few fourth years. You were almost positive all the professors would have been made aware of your current situation, though you felt as if Flitwick and Taurisus were more happy to have a seventh year to demonstrate more advanced spells rather than helping you hone your skills.

As soon as you stepped into the common room, heading towards the stairs to the girl’s dormitories a bit deflated from the experience, Sirius popped up from one of the tables where he was sitting with Remus. You didn’t have time to escape before he rushed over, throwing an arm around your shoulders.

“Hey, firecracker,” he said, his grin far more irritating than normal. “Doing all right?”

“Fine,” you mumbled, continuing towards the staircase.

Sirius came along, his arm staying put. “Haven’t seen Zephyr in a while, or the other trolls. Hopefully Dumbledore’s got them holed up in the dungeons.”

You threw his arm off of you when you reached the staircase, moving to head up.

“Oi!”

You turned around, your lips pursed as you stared down at him, a hand on his hip. Why you didn’t just keep on walking was beyond you. “What?”

“Don’t want to talk about your lover’s quarrel?” he asked with a smirk.

You scowled, moving back down the staircase. “Shut it,” you whispered, glancing around the common room. It didn’t appear as if anyone heard, though the threat was still imminent if he kept on speaking. “It was not a lover’s quarrel.”

“Sure seemed like one,” he said, his smile widening, sly and filled with mischief. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you two were shacking up.”

“Well, it wasn’t,” you snapped, narrowing your eyes. “And you know that as well as I do we’re not.”

“Come off it,” he whined, waving you off. “When are you two gonna get over this so we can go back to focusing on the common enemy. I’m getting antsy here.”

“Which is?” you asked, growing more and more tired of his antics.

“The tossers who tried to poison you, obviously,” he whispered with a shrug.

You rolled your eyes. “And what are you planning on doing about them?”

His smirk deepened, his face growing alight. “I was thinking some Amortentia in snivellus’s drink, make him fall in love with Hagrid or something. Maybe a bit of choice wand-work for Mulciber. I think we might be able to go full public shaming on Zephyr given the—”

“Okay, I get it,” you said, raising your hand. You weren’t sure how much more of his enthusiastic revenge plans you could take. There was also the added concern of spending too much time in the common room, thus increasing your chances of running into James.

“Seriously,” Sirius began again, his smile dropping, “is this one of those times when one of you acts like you’re gonna hold a grudge and you don't, or is this the real deal?”

“The real deal, as far as I can tell,” you said, turning to walk back up the stairs.

“This is bull,” Sirius called. “I can’t follow you up!”

“Exactly.”

“Thank Merlin you’re alone,” Marlene gasped as you walked into your room, standing up from her desk chair.

“Did you turn Dorcas’s boots green again?” you asked warily, glancing over towards Dorcas’s trunk.

“No,” she huffed, hurrying towards you. “And that was three years ago, give it a break.”

“Yeah, but it’d be pretty funny if it happened again,” you chuckled, pulling off your tie and tossing it onto your bed.

She continued to stare at you with frantic, rather worrying eyes. “I haven’t been able to get you alone in ages,” she began, working herself up considerably. “You have to tell me about the fight. What happened, what’d he say?”

You closed your eyes, pinching the bridge of your nose. When you let your hand drop, Marlene’s eager face was still directly in front of yours, urging you on. “Godric, Marls, you really are a gossip.”

Her mouth pressed into a line, unrelenting.

“I don’t even remember most of it,” you argued, turning away to kick off your shoes and shoving them under your four-poster. “It was just a fight, I don’t know what to tell you.”

Marlene scoffed, plopping down on your bed. “C’mon, it’s me! I all ready know your big secret. What's another?”

“Some people like to keep certain things private,” you said, walking around her legs to pull out your trunk. You began to dig through it for your muggle clothes, tossing them onto the floor beside you.

“They’ll wrinkle if you do that,” Marlene said, leaning over the side. You didn’t respond, picking them up and going to the lavatory. “I just want to help!”

“You’ve helped enough,” you said through the door as you changed.

“Just give it to me one to ten,” she called. “One being awful, ten meaning you two started snogging.”

You swung open the door, staring back at her with a blank face. “If you must know, it was a bloody disaster.”

Marlene cringed, her brows pinched. “How much? A massacre?”

“Just about.” You threw your clothes into the hamper, sitting down beside her with a long, drawn out sigh. “That’s the gist of it, at least.”

“Y’know,” Marlene began with a small smile, “before, it seemed a lot like a lovers quarrel if you ak—”

“Not you, too,” you groaned, flopping back onto your mattress.

Marlene looked down at you, her smile gone. “Dorcas?”

“No, Sirius.”

“Huh. I’ve discovered over the last few weeks that our minds actually work a lot alike,” she said with no shortage of disgust. “It’s disturbing.”

“Sorry if I don’t have a lot of sympathy,” you said, throwing an arm over your eyes. “I’m maxed out on self-pity.”

Marlene didn’t say anything for a beat, letting out a short breath. “You really won’t tell me?”

You took your arm from your face, meeting her eyes. Her brows were tilted, her eyes begging you to spill. You sat up, slouching forward with another groan. “It’s kind of embarrassing, if I’m being honest.”

“Oh, none of that,” Marlene said, knocking your shoulders. “You’ve known me too long to still get embarrassed over shite like this. How long did I make you stay in this room with me while I cried over Zephyr?”

“Too long, considering he’s a rat,” you muttered.

“Hey, we didn’t know that at the time,” she said sternly. “But that only proves my point further. See the kind of stuff I pull.”

You rubbed your hands down your face, glancing over at her hesitantly. “He just fed me lines the whole time.”

“What’d he say?”

“He said he didn’t tell me about Mulciber because he thought I’d be embarrassed by it, like we're eleven years old or something,” you said, growing peeved at the memory of it. “I told him it was a load of crap, but he just kept doubling down—”

“You are such a moron,” she said, her eyes wide as she stared at you.

“What? You really expect me to believe that? It’s a cop-out,” you argued. “He’d have to be completely daft to think that.”

“He’s a moron, too,” she said, completely sure of herself. “Of course he’s stupid enough to think that.”

You faltered, a bit flabbergasted by her assertion. “What do you mean?”

“I mean he probably feels the same way you do about him, but because you’re so bloody closed off he can’t get a read on you,” she said with a roll of her eyes. “He’s probably walking on eggshells trying to feel out the weather. Of course he’d avoid letting you know Mulciber teased him about supposedly shagging you. It’s a nightmare scenario. Well, at least if you’re a moron. Any reasonable person would—”

“I’ve already told you, he doesn’t fancy me,” you interrupted.

Marlene groaned dramatically, her hands splaying out in frustration. “I’m going to kill you one of these days. Any more of this and I’ll start going gray.”

You didn’t respond, staring at Lily’s bed in front of you. You weren’t sure if Marlene’s words would ever be enough, no matter how sure she was. Even so, the possibility was torture, the one in a billion chance enough to make you question your own recollection of Sunday. Your eyes fell on Lily’s desk, her books neatly piled, her parchment rolled to perfection. What would she say if she knew?

“Before I left I told him he had an ego made of glass,” you said with a dry laugh, the reality of how ruined everything was coming into full view. “I have no fucking clue where I pulled that one from.”

“Very poetic,” Marlene said with a sad smile. “And partially true. I would’ve said a house of cards.”

Your head fell into your hands, your words muffled, “What am I gonna do?”

“What do you want to do?” she asked softly.

“I don’t know.”

“Do you want to forgive him?”

You laughed again. “I don’t know.”

“Are you still upset with him?” she asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Do you want to snog him?”

You took your face out of your hands, glaring at her smug expression. You hit her on the arm, shaking your head. “You’re the worst.”

“I’m the best,” she said with a teasing grin. “Do you know how many times I’ve thought about telling James so you two can get on with it all ready? The temptation is tortuous. I’m a saint.”

“Godric, you really do sound like Black,” you said, smiling at her grimace.

She stood up, shaking her head as she meandered around the room, swinging one of the posts of her bed.

“Where is everyone anyway?” you asked.

“Lily’s doing some Ancient Runes thing with Remus, which is probably hideously boring,” she drawled. “Merlin knows where Dorcas is. Why?”

You picked up your bag, the parchment with James’s birth chart still tucked inside the pages of your Charms textbook. “I don’t know, just wondering,” you said, putting on your shoes.

“And where are you going?” she asked with a raise of her brows.

“The Library.”

She sat on her bed, going to grab her shoes. “I’ll come with you.”

“You don’t have to,” you said, knowing it was the last thing she wanted to do.

“You sure?”

“Positive.” You swung open the door, calling out over your shoulder. “I’ll be back late, I’m gonna do my Astronomy observation tonight.”

“Have fun,” she called, sing-song and sarcastic. “We’re finishing this conversation later!”

You walked down the long aisles of the Library, weaving your way towards the Divination section. You found your tried and true reference for birth charts and horoscopes, The Astrologists Handbook by Penelope Dalca, hauling it back through the shelves towards the tables.

When you came to the open study room, scanning the tables for a free spot, you immediately ducked back behind the shelves, your heart beginning to race. Lily and Remus were at a table with a few other students, though they had not seemed to notice you, peering down at an array of books scattered across the surface. Lily’s auburn hair, glowing under the soft light of the Library, was piercing, an unwelcome reminder of the moral gray area you were heading towards. Your fingers curled around the edges of your book, holding it tightly to your chest.

Slowly, you inched your way back into the aisle, scampering towards a more secluded area. Surrounded by the well stocked though barely visited poetry section, you set your things down at a small table, taking out your quill and parchment.

After nearly two hours, you believed you had as good of a reading as you were capable of. Your parchment was a scribbled mess, James’s birth chart dissected and put back together again in front of you. Much of it made sense, though you had to keep in mind the greatest weakness in the art of astrology: free will. The stars were simply a starting point, the rest comes from nurture, the life one leads not only in initial upbringing, but the people you meet, the places you go, the things you are able, or unable, to learn. His chart is the one in which he was born to, though the James of the current day was decades ahead, filled with experiences both known and unknown to you. As Quattlebaum had put it so aptly, “...forever shifting to accommodate the bends on time.” With this in mind, you read it over one more time.

Sun, personal identity: Aries, the youngest sign, active, independent, brave, can be bold, inpatient, often lives in the moment, innovative, tenacious

Moon, emotions: Aries, passion, faces problems head-on, intense desires, not prone to sulkiness (though it can occur), outward confidence

Mercury, logic and communication: Pisces, open to possibilities, tactful

Venus, relationships: Pisces, playful, cares for many, may lie to prevent heartache, attracted to being the savior or the saved

Mars, force and drive: Aquarius, rebellion, freedom, adept at getting his way (no kidding)

-7 Opposition between Mars & Pluto: tendency to impose will upon others, may modify Mars traits = magnetic quality, possessiveness

-10 Opposition between Mars & Uranus: strength in overcoming obstacles

Jupiter, ethics: Capricorn, ambitious, values achievement, most successful when resourceful

-9 Opposition between Jupiter & Lilith: tendency to go to great efforts, especially in love

Saturn, order: Capricorn, scrupulous (surprising)

Uranus, individual liberty: Leo, resolute, independence is valued

Next, you went through your own chart in relation to his to find points of compatibility, or incompatibility. Your fingers buzzed as you hurriedly jotted down your notes, flipping back and forth through the reference book.

Our Moons: He is expressive, I am steady. I am understanding of his impatience and he finds me calming. Coupled with his Saturn and my Mercury, he may search for a strong emotional reaction, even at the expense of conflict.

Our Venus’: We are opposites: magnetism or strong pull. This comes with excitement, positive & negative complications.

His Mars vs. my Venus: he is more energetic, good for long term relationships, an overall positive.

His Pluto vs. my Saturn: I add tranquility, he brings new ideas, there are possible clashes.

His Pluto vs. my Mars: I am more easily able to see into his deeper qualities than others, understanding.

His Jupiter vs. my Neptune: spiritually compatible, a strong draw

111 Trine Sun and Mars = positive for relationships

94 Trine Venus and Mars = passion (good & bad)

108 conjunction Sun and Lilith = he may find me evasive or impossible to pin down. The qualities which attract may also cause conflict. This is concerning.

-88 Square Sun and Lilith: complication, suspicious fascination. Also concerning.

You didn’t know what to think. So much of your friendship had been boiled down, distilled into its most basic parts and presented in front of you, your recent fights glaringly obvious on the parchment. The qualities which attract may also cause conflict, he may lie to prevent heartache, you are evasive. Just as your eyes ran over your words again, attempting to pick out all the negative aspects, weaving them around your own faults and follies, the bell tower began to chime. You had entirely lost track of time, quickly slamming your book closed and putting your things back into your bag. Across the Library, you could hear the stragglers shuffling along the floor to leave, hushed voices saying goodnight to their classmates.

Hoping Lily and Remus had already left by now, you placed your book back into its proper place on the shelf, saving Madam Pince the trouble. You were able to slip out of the Library without seeing your friends, your shameful piece of parchment making your bag grow heavy on your shoulder.

You had missed dinner entirely, heading down to the kitchens in hope there was still something for you to grab. Thankfully, Isby had kindly saved you a plate, though she did not seem too pleased about your late arrival. Afterwards, you headed up to the Astronomy Tower, your after-curfew pass signed by Sinistra safely in your pocket.

It was cold this time of night up in the Tower, your coat doing little to protect you. Over the years, you had gotten very good at warming charms due to your frequent late night excursions to observe the sky, a necessity if one were to seriously pursue the subject. A few other sixth and seventh years were there as well, each doing their independent studies. You peered into the telescope, looking back and forth at the large sheet of parchment on the easel in front of you. You were currently charting the movement of Ceres, a long and arduous process which your current state of mind was not completely prepared to take on.

For hours you resisted the urge to move your telescope, to take a peek at the stars which shifted above you in their endless dance. If only Quattlebaum could see you now. “Even our muggle counterparts are aware of the power of the celestial system. They have their own traditions of believing their fate lies within the stars…they are correct, of course! But fate, I will remind you, is not the only guiding force…”

A few of your classmates turned their head as your telescope squeaked, abruptly swiveling as you gave in to temptations. You cringed a bit at the sudden attention, glancing back down at your chart as if you were still working on it. Soon, everyone went back to their own work, leaving you to gaze at the stars in peace. You swallowed nervously as you peered into the telescope, studying the crescent moon in Aries, soon to enter Taurus.

Astrology observations No.15

*just my opinions, take them with a grain of salt

-Neptune hard aspects to Mercury/ Neptune in 3rd/Pisces Mercury- people may constantly underestimate your intelligence and they’re genuinely surprised if you’re observant/smart

-The only Virgo risings I’ve known that are not skinny/petite have mars conjunct asc (even then they had a period of time when they were really skinny and either got out of that on purpose or on accident)

-Did you notice that a lot of Cancer Asc men get cast as like “traditional” manly men. I saw Ben Affleck was a Cancer Asc and Kurt Russel! They’re both known for their action movies (I like Kurt Russel more lol) and I was looking at Jon Hamm’s birth chart and he’s a cancer Asc too. He prefers to be a comedy guy, but looks like he walked out of the 50s so he had his breakthrough in mad men. (There’s also a lot going on there with that whole hazing scandal that I note everytime I see him so that’s a lot)

-Libra mars Asc try not to get frustrated but often their mars energy leaks out in other ways and they end up expressing their anger somehow despite the passive aggressive placement for a mars sign

-Fire Mercuries (especially Leo and Sagittarius) copy speech patterns/catch phrases a lot imo, almost as much as water Mercuries but less exact mimicry. Earth Mercuries tend to have very specific speech patterns that don’t change too much throughout their life, they can be very direct and to the point but will have a great deal of detail to share depending on the subject. Air Mercuries tend to have very distinct speech patterns and usually are the most likely to talk and write in their own sort of prose, I’ve known a few (specifically Gemini Mercuries) that have overcome speech impediments and become great, captivating speakers.

-Pluto touching Saturn can amplify its lessons and effects to a higher degree. (Trine, Sextile) will make the experiences more intense but conjunction, opposition, and square could make these effects explosive and intense. With both positive and negative aspects the native will be forced to transform and change their ways- with the negative aspects (conjunct, opposition, square) the native will feel the trials they go through in these transformations

-12th house placements can give you psychic dreams, I’ve also frequently dreamed being people other than myself. Mars will have action oriented dreams. Sun may have more dreams about experiences they’ve had echoing in their dreams. Moon will have deep emotional experiences. Venus may dream about love and friendships.

-Moon opposition sun synastry can create a lot of tension in a romantic relationship. There seems to be some underlying competitiveness going on. Especially if the moon and the sun are Cardinal signs.

-Moon conjunct Sun synastry can be intense. I think it shows how conjunct can be a negative aspect. The energies can understand each other sure, but they can also become an echo chamber of feeding into each other’s egos. I feel similarly about Sun conjunct Asc synastry. (My parents had this and oof, if that relationship isn’t karmic anyway it’s even more so now..)

-The only conjunct synastry I think I had intensely play out was Scorpio moon conjunct my Asc (I didn’t even realize it at the time) it was a lot! Fun and passionate but also he would get so overwhelmed he would be just shaking in normal conversation. Felt like with that and the 8th house synastry and my venus conjunct his pluto there was no was to turn the heat down and be normal with each other. Like we knew it would be short term but he was like talking about the future then I was overthinking the future and then it was over and idk that’s too much imo lol, lil dramatic just to be over in a snap. (Local Capricorn moon doesn’t get what all the fuss is about lol)

-Plus you can have all the positive synastry in the world, it really depends on timing and effort and individual choices and joint communication to work on your relationship, it’s an effort game

Mostly based on my own irl observations over the years, as well as my bookworm era a few years ago . Also taking into account my own impressions & feelings for the LIs, so sufficiently biased and I'm not sorry. Venus in Virgo. Period. I'm dying on this hill. Fight me. No but fr, first he's a diehard animal lover and will jump into a dog fight to save a puppy. Second, he's giving "mother hen" behavior - says "watch your step", then grabs you when you trip and scolds you "told you to watch your step"(Virgo 101); sends you off with an ESCORT, jumps in fists first when the roughneck tries fighting you then hides you from the purple gang later and escorts you back himself - need I say more? Not to mention he VERY likely helped Kuras save us (his scent lingers in the clinic when MC wakes up), and helps in the clinic regularly (so a part-time nurse, most likely helped save Mhin too). Also, he was definitely watching over us even before the Seaspring (the scarred woman knew our name from somewhere, also the Unnamed can feel Ocudeus' presence outside the clinic). He craves taking care of someone - people, animals, soulless, poor unfortunate souls - you name it. And it's not for show - that's just how he is. That's how he shows love - by being attentive. All my favorite people have this placement, they're all like him in this regard - best Venus placement imo (yes, I'm a biased Venus in Taurus, BUT I'm also right, lol)

Scorpio Ascendant I mean... come on. Come on. He's LITERALLY a gang leader! Not that anybody needs convincing, but aside from the sharp, intense eyes and the fact he oozes sex appeal, this would place his Sun in 10th House- he is known publicly as a leader, his presence demands respect and attracts attention. BDE for sure. Also he's very smart, intuitive and observant. Very aware of his surroundings, can pick up on people's moods & intentions like it's nothing. I'm convinced he can literally read our mind. A smart, sexy and caring bastard, lord help me...

Kuras

Virgo Signature sign Kuras is very service-oriented, focused on helping the community and always looking for ways to assist others. Very mindful of people’s problems and what they’re in need of - and ready to provide it, no matter what it may cost him. He’s also very polite, but comes off rigid, like he’s read “Social Etiquette for Humans 101” and is following it to the letter lol. Also kinda nerdy – has his special interests, and if you let him he’ll talk about reductions and concoctions all day, every day. I don't think it's a specific placement that influences this behavior, it's the whole picture, thus - a signature sign!

Saturn Dominant This man is a Capricorn already, sure, but there’s a difference. Capricorn placements have an inner spark, a fire about them – they’re ambitious and driven while being practical and disciplined. Saturn, however, is a dry and dark, malefic - almost apocalyptic planet. It’s the last visible planet – the gatekeeper of the divine knowledge (depicted by the outer planets). It represents time, boundaries, a sense of duty and responsibility, guilt and the consequences of one's actions. A symbol of Kronos and the Devil, it represents the falling of God, the grotesque expression of divinity. Kuras has a curious mind, fascinated by science and humanity, and in light of the Kuras character lore (and his not-too-subtle mischievousness) he def has strong Uranus & Jupiter influence as well. But the Saturnian themes in particular parallel the themes and main conflict in his story most strongly.

Mercury Retrograde I had to. The way he's so precise and eloquent, but roundabout when he talks? How he's so tight-lipped and takes his sweet time before answering a question? Mercury retrograde, 100 percent. I don't make the rules.

Mhin

Moon in 1st House. How do I know? I have it. The color of printer paper (the sun hates us), emotions written all over their entire existence and impossible to hide, as well as rather intense emotional outbursts? Yes, yes and yes. Big-time tsundere? Yes. Big softy, too? Yes. We could be twins, honestly. I stg they have a crush on Ais, but unlike with Kuras they're not happy about it. I dunno, call it twin telepathy. The Christmas photo doesn't help either.

Water moon, most likely in Cancer. Not Scorpio, because their emotions fluctuate rapidly, and are overtly moody. The difference between big waves and a rip current, for example. But more so, this makes for a Sun-Moon square - the dissonance and lack of harmony between their outer persona and their inner needs and desires is clear. They have difficulty expressing their emotions, not difficulty as in showing them, but in a way where they come off wrong and get interpreted the wrong way. Very protective, like a smol soft crabbie shielding themselves with their shell. Pushes people away consciously, but hoping for someone to have enough of a "spine" to handle them and protect them, giving them a safe space to finally relax. Most of all they need love, reassurance and acceptance (my poor little meow meow💙)

Mars square Mercury That Mercury is in Aries, you can't tell me otherwise. The extra 'angry' coming from Mars in Capricorn is helping, too. But not only that, it also makes a square to their Sun AND an opposition to their Moon - a T-square, a highly difficult & stressful configuration. The Mars is in Capricorn because they like a partner with authority and attitude (Cap in 7th), and it makes for good synastry with Kuras (my cutie patooties). Also for how small they are, they're very agile and skilled with knifes (ruled by Mars).

Leander

Venus conjunct Pluto. Sexy. Magnetic. He pulls you in with the gravitational force of his tits. These people are the definition of an intense lover. Obsessive and hungry for love - and pain, equally, very big on extreme and overwhelming sensations. You have a terrible curse? Oooh, danger - gimme! You can never give them too much attention - they want it all, and they're not sharing. Possessive, wants to draw you into their little world and keep you for themselves.

Leo Ascendant, for a few reasons. I was initially thinking Libra, but after looking at everything, I decided on Leo. He has a noble presence - not surprising considering his upbringing. He's a very charismatic talker, well-spoken, lovely voice, can charm anyone into trusting him (Libra in 3rd coming through). To his credit, he takes his work seriously and comes off as a reliable boss (Cap in 6th, also Taurus in 10th). He wants to take care of people... or rather, wants to be seen as a savior. I really see him as a Gemini-Cancer cusp, but technically he's a Cancer so his sun will be in 12th house. It’s a house of self-undoing, the afterlife, illusions - ego and reality go to disintegrate here. All that connects into the life-and-death theme surrounding him and his design. The sun here becomes a fantasy, a goal rather than reality – a dream of being a leader, a hero, someone who people look up to for help and answers. He’s really giving Jesus-wannabe, with the resurrection and savior complex he has going on, as well as the over-the-top generosity. A big red crab, with a big red flag... and the tits to match (Cancer rules the booba).

Vere

Venus conjunct Midheaven, Midheaven being in Scorpio. With Sun in Scorpio. Lots of Scorpio. He’s so pretty! Pretty in an elegant, sensual, effortless yet manicured to perfection way. Apparently, the BBC (Big Bulky Collar) on him does not signal “DANGER!” to the rascals who take him for an easy target, because all they see is the approachable, delicate face and inviting voice. He knows the effect he has on people, and he’s using it to his advantage – to get a free drink, or to make people trust him juuust enough to get what he wants. He is attracted to power, powerful people, and wants power for himself – and he’s ruthless about achieving his goals, too (Scorpio in 10th); there’s a lot of gossip surrounding this man’s public image, his reputation. Venus conjunct Midheaven places a focus on art – he is an artist, appreciates art as well as creating it himself. He IS the art, or that’s the perception of him anyway.

Venus in Scorpio As Venusian as he appears, Venus is in detriment here – there’s conflicting emotions regarding his looks, and the perception of him – or rather, the expectations placed on him because of it. He'll break rules on purpose, act outrageous, play coy, use his beaty for all its worth – he’ll purposefully play the ‘bad guy’ as a form of rebellion, a defense mechanism. He can’t find comfort in a traditional relationship dynamic and has a hard time liking someone who likes them back - he’s afraid of commitment. I believe his confidence is a façade; there’s an underlying fear of betrayal and rejection, and a paranoia that any good thing that comes his way is a trick, a trap, or a lie. That he doesn’t deserve love or care, really. Buuut… if you’re like Ais and see him for all his ‘ugly’, and accept him anyway… then you’re really something💜.

In celebration of 3,000 followers and this being my last Astro tumblr post. Loved all of the support and the crazy ass times we had 😭🫶🏽

VIRGO RISING

I am a Virgo rising. Although a lot of you guessed Capricorn and Scorpio, and there’s some explainations to that, I’m a pure Virgo rising. Virgo risings tend to have a lot of fullness to them. Full lips, eyebrows, and cheeks. They have a seemingly innocent look to them which they get because of their eyes. They tend to have round almost owl like eyes with a bit of a feline flare. With their foreheads/top of their heads being very prominent and there chins to be typically very small in comparison. Virgo risings tend to have angular faces but they still appear soft and delicate. They tend to have a very attentive and focused look to them and their faces tend to be even/symmetrical.

VIRGO JUPITER 1H

Jupiter 1H people tend to have prominent thighs and/or a very attractive butt but it can honestly expand any part of the the body since Jupiter naturally rules over expansion period. And Virgo Jupiter’s tend to have a very attractive waist line/stomach.

TAURUS VENUS 9H

Taurus is ruled by Venus so having it be my Venus signs means that I have a natural earthy and Venusian look to me. (That and I’m a Venusian) Taurus Venus people typically are seen as conventionally attractive. I would say all earth afflicted venues (house or sign) have faces that are so naturally beautiful, literally just Mother Nature vibes. Venus in the 9H can mean that my legs are very attractive as well. Everybody online thinks I’m 5’7 and up but I’m actually 5’3 🚶🏽‍♀️ In some pictures I appear taller than I actually am.

VENUS - JUPITER

I specifically have Venus trine Jupiter which can make someone have a lot of natural beauty/blessed with beauty. People with this placement can have beautiful eyes/large eyes, attractive/long legs and can make some rn look like a fairy or even an elf lol

ASC - MOON

Moon - ASC people have something very soft about them I’m their face. And usually it’s their skin that gives off this soft look because it appears shiny/ dewy. Especially in a bare face. These people can have plump faces or cheeks as well. (I for sure did when I was younger)

ASC - VENUS

Of course Venus touching the asc will give someone some sort of beauty that the general public find very attractive. People with prominent Venus can have a pouty look to them and symmetrical faces.

ASC - MARS

This placement can indicate someone being seen as sexy and/or active. Might have an angled and shape looking face or body. Similar to Pluto these people have a seductive stare but it can be more aggressive or dominating. Striking or laser eye like eye contact. These people can look very striking and attractive in more “masculine” apparel.

ASC - SATURN

Typically these people age very well. They tend to be late bloomers and grow more into their faces with age. Face shape/ structure is very prominent, especially as they get older and they tend to be on the skinnier side most of time.

ASC - PLUTO

People with this aspect tend to have a bit of seductiveness and darkness to their appearance. Literally and figuratively, since I think most of these people who have brown eyes are a really dark shade. Naturally dark features also incidental hair. They have a heavy lidded almost bedroom eye stare to them.

VIRGO BELLA CONJ. ASC 1H

Having the asteroid that simply means beautiful conj. the ASC/ in the 1H can make someone be perceived as very beautiful. Virgo Bellas tend to look younger than they appear. This will accentuate a more innocent look. Since Virgo rules over the stomach/ waist bella Virgos might have an attractive stomach/waist

NYMPHE CONJ. SUN 7H

Very flirty and charming stare with this one. Nymphe rules over youth so having it conj. a personal planet can indicate being blessed with a youthful look in your older years. It being conj. Sun can mean that I’ll have a glow/shine to me even in old age

ARIES APHRODITE - ASC 9H

Having Aries touch the ASC can obviously make the native have some sort of aphrodisiac look to them. A mixture between beauty and seduction in the face. Aries Aphrodite trines my ASC so the sharp sensuality is softened. Aries Aphrodite people tend to look their best when they’re wearing warm colors reminiscent of a fire and wearing bold, and more “masculine” fashions. 9H Aphrodite can give someone an attractive curvy or thick figure around the thigh area.

Why I've learned to take Goldilocks' approach to interpreting planet & house placements in astrology

Disclaimer: There will be some theory here, some anecdotes, and more than my fair share of yapping, but all I care about is that this makes a positive impact for even one person. Then I'll be glad I didn't leave it in the drafts. :) Also, it's almost 3 AM as I write this, so do with that information what you will LOL.

People tend to over-complicate or oversimplify the planets and houses in astrology. As someone who likes to produce and consume information at the same temperature Goldilocks likes her porridge, I've decided to abandon more pressing matters (my assignment due tomorrow and the 14 asks in my inbox) and talk instead about what approach to astrology I consider to be "just right."

One key thing to remember is that the majority of your natal chart is not actually about you. I know the lions, crabs, water bearers and maidens especially all squirmed a bit, but hear me out. The 1st house and the luminaries (Sun and Moon) are completely about you. YOUR ideals, inner self, core desires, and emotional needs. The way YOU present yourself to the world. These make up your character - the skin you're in, your core personality traits, and your favorite self-imposed customizations. The remaining inner planets (Mercury, Venus, and Mars) and angular houses (4th, 7th, and 10th) still pertain to you, of course, but if you think about it, they extend much further outside of yourself and into various aspects of life and society.

Mercury describes how you think, but also how you communicate those thoughts with others and what kinds of conversations or intellectual environments you thrive in.

Venus shows how you define and express love (or what expressions of love you're drawn to), but also tells you about the kinds of connections you may attract or want to attract (platonic, romantic, etc).

Mars describes how you express emotions like anger and excitement, but also how you move towards (or away from) different people, places and things in life.

The 4th house describes your approach and views on what home and family should look like.

The 7th house reveals what you desire in a spouse, a soulmate or a trusted business partner.

The 10th house describes your attitude towards career and how you "show up" in work environments.

Yes, these are all technically "you," but anything outside of your sun, moon and ascendant placements are less concerned with analyzing and describing you, the lone individual and more concerned with describing the personas you assume to navigate everything else in life. There is a reason why there is one house of "self" and 11 houses meant to guide you through the bigger world outside of you.

I believe fewer people would fly into a panic over things in their natal and synastry charts if they understood that many aspects won't affect them as strongly as they think, especially between outer planets or at weak orbs.

You know, out of curiosity, I looked up the charts of my childhood friends recently. First, the ones born the same year or so as me. Then I broadened my observations outward up to 10 years (I have had a few friends within that many years older or younger than me). If you love astrology as much as I do and haven't tried this yourself yet, you'd be fascinated by how similar charts can be between people all born within certain time periods. With my friend groups, most charts were nearly identical-looking from Uranus to Pluto. The closer in age, the more there were charts that looked nearly the same from as far up as Saturn or Jupiter right on down. Nearly all my age-mates have Uranus and Neptune in Capricorn, Pluto in Scorpio, Saturn in Pisces or Aquarius and Lilith in Taurus or Aries. Half my friend group has Venus in Libra or Scorpio and the other half in Aries or Gemini. I was even surprised by how many of my same-age friends have Lilith in Taurus and Juno in Scorpio like I do. Whenever we all let go of our masks and speak freely and openly, it's quite humbling and also soothing to realize that many of our experiences and struggles really aren't all that unique after all. Perhaps this isn't such good news to an Enneagram 4 (:D) but, generally I think we all do crave that feeling that we're not the only ones going through something.

I share this to illustrate one simple point: the chances are high that the placements/aspects associate with your outer planets will not have the strongest DIRECT impact on you individually. You and others in your peer group are likely in the same big boat or a bunch of matching lifeboats paddling away from the same generational shipwrecks. A similar thing can be said about the succedent (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) and cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th). They have more to do with everyTHING and everyONE else in your life and how you relate/react/respond to it all. This is why I'm so against the way many astrology explanations and observations are written. I'm not talking about posts meant to be more entertaining or personal than educational. I'm talking about the posts where you can tell the OP meant for them to be taken 100% seriously, but do little more than spook or scare those who know less than they do.

Last year I met a coworker who asked me to read a synastry chart for her. She wanted a 2nd opinion besides her own, as she had some 12th house synastry with the person and had been in emotional limbo for days because of it. I told her that the direction of the connection was up to her and the person - the charts only show the possibilities - what the beautiful, the good, the bad, and the ugly could look like within that aspect. What did she do? She went to see him, yelled at him for things he hadn't even done yet that she "knew" he was "going to do" because his moon was in her 12th and then blocked him. Came to work as sour as a lime yet excitedly telling me that she had set boundaries with him. Had to bite my tongue; I wanted to say the only thing she set up was an obstacle.

It is so easy to become obsessed with searching for highly specific answers or predictions for day to day life in astrology and that's just not what its for. At least, not in my opinion.

No one is immune to this either.

Let me tell you about the last major time I fell into this trap. This was around 2020. At that time, I noticed 2nd house synastry with my then-partner and immediately sabotage the entire connection. How? Oh, well, because my overstimulated and uninformed pea brain would assume all sorts of things, such as, "Oh they're just with me to eventually try to move in and then get lazy and expect me to pay for everything and drain all my resources." Do these things happen? Of course. Does it make any sense to assume this WILL be the case the moment anyone has their inner planets in my 2nd house? Nope. But I didn't know better and was "too busy" to do my research, so what did I do? Assumed the worst. All the while not really seeing what was going on in front of me. Stumbling over the evidence to pursue a theory instead. And I ended up hurting someone I truly cared about.

Had I slowed down and taken a balanced approach, I would have noticed that while this person had Mercury, Venus and Jupiter in my 2nd house, he also had Mars trine (0°) and Saturn conjunct (4°) my Moon, which to put it simply, would have led me to the bigger, more accurate picture.

So, yes, I had a boyfriend who admired my talents, felt attracted to my generosity and "expensive" looking style (even though I exclusively bargain shop).

Yes, he was very much drawn to the fact that I have an eye for opportunity and manage to be in the right place at the right time to take advantage of them.

However, I failed to notice the part where his Virgo Mars was in harmony with my Capricorn moon. He knew without needing to ask that I really didn't want to be running around handling things all the time the way I've had to for nearly all my adult life. He knew I wanted to feel secure with someone and taken care of at least part of the time, for once. I was too busy panicking over apparent "bad" synastry to notice any of that early on. I didn't notice either that, as the Saturn person, he felt a heavy sense of responsibility for me that cancelled out any reverse gold digging tendencies.

He rarely wanted anything from me and had a hard time accepting gifts or help, yet he offered me both all the time. I didn't always know exactly what things he was stressed about because he spoke another language with his family, friends and business partners, and he usually didn't want to unload it on me, though I told him he could always vent if he needed to and I'd be there to listen. Which I was. But my mistake was getting carried away in misinterpretations and misuse of our astrology information, assuming things like "oh he's saying all this but it's probably future faking," "'he's rarely, if ever affectionate, like on our first dates, I guess it's just a matter of time before probation is over and the money requests are gonna start coming in while he chases someone else" and so on.

Was my ex future-faking? Maybe. Maybe not. I'll never know because I fully assumed that he was. That showed in my behavior which eventually started to reflect in his behavior too, when he got tired of feeling like I would never believe anything he promised to me and that nothing he did would be enough to make me fully trust him. That would break anybody, honestly.

Was he really waiting around to get comfortable and start relying on me for money? Maybe. Maybe not. But he never did. Any money he borrowed, he returned without me having to ask. If I came over, he'd hand me his card for anything I wanted to order. If I used my own card instead, he was actually offended. In fact, he hated when we'd go out and I'd look for the cheapest of everything. The least expensive dish. The dress on sale. If he insisted on paying, I'd try to cover the tip or pay for something else later to keep it even.

But why? Why do that? Oh, well, I had seen that his Saturn was in my 8th house - the house of shared resources - and my overthinking hyper-vigilant ass decided that I needed to "prove" that I wasn't a liability or something. Never mind that the Saturn-Moon conjunction was RIGHT THERE to tell me to relax and not assume the worst outcome for the 8H synastry ...no, no, I just flew right off the deep end and assumed that if I didn't assert (micro) dominance in some way, he'd spoil me long enough for me to get used to it, then start controlling me financially and so on.

Years later, I wonder often if things would have turned out better if I had just calmed the fuck down. If I had let things play out naturally, keeping in mind what COULD happen without acting as if it was BOUND to happen. You know what the worst part about that is? I don't think most of us realize how powerful self-fulfilling prophecies really are sometimes. The negative (and positive) interpretations you can take away from planet and house interpretations are simply possibilities; potential outcomes that will only go that way if fed and watered. I won't step too far into territory I haven't mastered, but I'd like to think it's safe to say the same goes for tarot readings as well.

To sum up this mammoth post

I believe astrology is meant to be only a guide; a helpful resource as you go through the stages of life. It should be your training wheels, not the whole bike. Your driving instructor, not your daily chauffeur. The salt that brings out the flavor in a dish-not the whole dish itself. I think if more of us understood this, there wouldn't be so much fearmongering and generalizations about which aspects and houses are the "villain" in the astrology community.

Uh, so this is Aradia! :)

She's based on the Italian folktale from 1899, in which she's Lucifer's daughter. Although it would've made more sense to make her Charlie's half sister, I don't see Hazbin Hotel Luci having a child with anyone who isn't Lilith /e shrug besides, it's cuter anyway to think of her as their actual daughter (even though you don't have to be related to be someone's daughter ofc)

She's 125 years old in comparison to Charlie cause, well, if you subtract 200 from 2024, you'd get 1824, meaning she would've been born around that time if hazbin hotel took place in current years. So, since the Aradia folklore was written somewhere in 1899, she was born around that era/time period

I made her look more like Lilith to parallel how Charlie looks more like Lucifer :)

This is how I see their height difference, helped by searching the Internet on what the most estimated height was for the other three, so the other three's heights very well might not be canon. But overall, she's just taller than Charlie

Aradia likes gardening, baking, writing poems, and music. I also like to imagine her as an astrology geek that favours the lunar aspect of space :)

Personally, I'd say she's an ISFJ in terms of personality!

Aradia isn't around much, though, but tries to visit whenever she can (she doesn't call cause she doesn't understand modern-day technology very well, lol)

She supports Charlie's hotel cause that seems in character for her, in my opinion

I cooked a lot of meals, I washed all my bedding that’s been sitting there since end of last year, I cleaned my fish tank, I cleaned the mildew off my bathroom walls, I put a lot of my clothes away, my recycling pile is way down, I built a storage shelf thing for under my desk, I sewed a skirt, I read and wrote a lot

Follow through on the tasks that need to be done and get your life in shape for the next phase of preparation

I’ve been intentional about this! I made a list of things I want to get out of my saturn return in my 1H and one of those things is clear skin so I’ve been consistent with the routine like actually tracking it on the calendar! Losing weight was another on that list and the last two months I was just focusing on food like getting back into cooking and the last almost 3 weeks I’ve been tracking all my food and even using a food scale. On the last day of this transit I signed up for the gym!

Overall I would give this transit 6/10 😂 the mental anguish was toooo much Omggg I hope it’s easier in 2025 and after that I’m glad I don’t have to deal with this for another 30 years

Saturn Return

There’s so much misconceptions, fear lingering when it comes to your Saturn return and I think it’s because a lot people don’t know or truly understand the full energy of Saturn.

Who is Saturn?

- Saturn is what I like to call our “personal Government” he’s the celestial body that brings us structure and discipline in our lives. He’s also the one who teaches us the hard lessons in our lives. He rules over our career, public image, our boss, karma and time. Without Saturn , we would be lost ducks. Think of Saturn as the stern dad who placed lots of restrictions on you growing up.

Example: Let’s say you want to go to a party with your friends that involves lots of bad influences such as your so called friends but your dad (Saturn) don’t allow you to go and instead want you to stay home and do something that’s fun and safe. You sneak out and go to the party anyway. You’re having fun right, drinking and being reckless. then the police shows up to shut it down and you get arrested for being drunk and disorderly. You get go home, sobered up and grounded by your dad (Saturn).time passes and you realize these so called “friends” never called and checks up on you. The only one who has is your dad, even though you’re grounded, he still makes sure you’re okay and gives you a small lecture on discipline.

The point of this short story was to show you that we think Saturn (dad) is blocking things in our life (the party) but he really just looking out for us in long haul.

So what does this has to do with Saturn Return?

Similar to the short story example I gave, that’s how we live life the first 27 years of our existence , partying (not literally) and being stubborn until our dad (Saturn ) says “hey, it’s time to get serious about your purpose now. “

So what exactly is a Saturn Return?

Saturn Return= Coming of Age story.

Its when transit Saturn return to the same sign as your natal Saturn

Example: you were born when Saturn was in the sign of Pisces. Now Saturn is back in Pisces again so you’re going through your return

When does it start and how long does it last?

It takes every 29 years for Saturn to re-enter the sign it was in when you were born. Saturn stays in a sign for 2.5 years

It starts when you’re 27 years old. This is known as the Pre-Shadow period. Things may start to change for the better or worse for you at this time.

By the time you’re 29 years old, you’ll be going through your actual return. Depending on the degree your Saturn is in, that’s when you’ll feel it the heaviest. The actual return will last when you’re 31 years old.

However, there’s the after shadow period so really until you’re 33 years old is when you’ll be fully done with Saturn.

Then you get to do it over again in 29 years lol

What can I expect during my Saturn Return?

Short answer, it depends on your chart. This is why I believe you shouldn’t listen to other people warnings or take their horror experiences as your own because everyone single person has their own lessons, different houses, aspects. Then you have to consider culture and family upbringings place a part as well.

A Saturn Pisces 3° 4h is going to have a completely different experience from someone who has Saturn Pisces 17° 1h.

Someone who has Saturn square Mars is going to have a different experience than someone who has Saturn trine Mars

What advice do you have?

If you’re not well versed in astrology, get a Saturn return reading done to at least understand the themes of your return. Honestly, just continue living your life and stop worrying about things you can’t control. Saturn return is to help us mature and strive toward our purpose and you’ll do that on a subconscious level anyway.

I don’t know if this is CPN but i am interested in all the astrology stuff when it comes to zz and wyb. so I understand if some people are not into that. During the roadshow, one of the people who attended is this 陶白白Sensei blogger ( with 18 million followers ) who posts about astrology. they describe for example what a certain zodiac sign is like and so on on their blog. they were invited to the event and was even asked to speak because WYB opened about how leo(s) like being praised. This person then described what a leo is ( intense people who will do what they set their mind to and sometimes even forget to eat or sleep. they don’t care if people laugh about them ) and people noticed how yibo was nodding along.

he agrees and seems like he knows how on point the description is for him and other leo(s). the blogger seems to think so too because of what he shared on his account.

now here comes the CPN part. Back in 9/16/2021, this blogger posted a reading about leo and libra and lots of the comments are about zz and wyb.
