its kinda funny, i never was someone who cared much about spoilers, usually i even liked knowing what i was gonna get into

the only exception was totk, i was so afraid of spoilers like i never was before ... and well .... i wish i hadnt been like that for it bc if i knew what awaited me it would have saved me alot of money, guilt, awkward interactions and frustration

but id say i learned my lesson at least, im never gonna get a game on release again, limited editions are too much of a risk for me, i like spoilers actually, game review scores are not to be trusted at all, and i will never trust what people say for the first month after release or so either (you couldnt escape the thousands of videos titled "totk is the best game evaaaar!!!!!" for so long ..)

Books of 2025: BLACKFISH CITY by Sam J. Miller.

Finished this last night! The jacket copy starts, "When a strange new visitor arrives in a floating city in the Arctic--humanity's last hope after the ravage of climate change--the city is entranced. She's riding an orca and has a polar bear at her beck and call," and, honestly, I'm sold (love a good floating city!).

I adored the setting and the worldbuilding--supremely cool city that was thoughtfully developed--and I loved how the narrative came together at the end. All the POV characters felt distinct (thank heck, because there were Many of them), and I had a fun time figuring out how to piece all the relationships together and percolating on The Science. Overall had a great time!

im gonna pop this off onto its own post for lengths sake and because im veering off topic akdkfkfkgkghj but OUGH I WANT to talk about Rory and becoming the vake because i dont think ive fully detailed it before outside of dms.

I can't remember the exact place i got this from, but one key thing i clung to about Veils and Violence is the way that it brings that out of people. that by being around it, violent urges are brought to the surface, and conflict and tensions rise.

it was not the killing of the vake that first brought this out in rory, but something surface veils first sparked in back on the surface, long ago. A girl who was so very angry at the world and the mold society and her parents forced her into, a rage that would have simmered forever if it hadnt been corrupted by an unnatural force..

...and if it hadnt been so surpressed. Veils' secrets actually parallel with Rory's parents, the two honestly different sides of the same coin. Where veils hides its truth of intelligence and manipulations, Rorys parents hide scandal and the reality thing... which turns into hiding rory's action too, when an accident of violence leads to death. secrets upon secrets, lies upon lies. The hunting now is a different coat of paint, buts its never really changed, has it?

But that is what it was for Rory, empowering. Violence was an ability and force she never had before. But is something she is very much prone to being lost in.

[I also have. a thing with despite the turbo kill ending, veils' violence and its spirit of sorts still lives on, a part of it almost possessing Aurora.

See, when the bomb went off, who into why, the fragments of veils seperate, some too small to even exist......rory, who had acted in veils' stead, who contained fragments of its blood within her, who viewed her motivations as the same, was also part of it too.]
