My father is like a tree that shelters me with his shadow, he lets me climb his branches, he takes me high, he pushes me towards the sky because he has made growing, his desire. My father's mind is like an open book, which smells of wisdom and fills me with the traces of his lifelong experience. My father's arms are soft like leaves that wave in the wind, full of life, they embrace me and are my strength in the storm and my one true comfort. My father's heart is a crystal clear stream of fresh water that gives me something to drink when my thirst most urges me. My father's smile is a meadow full of daisies that dance in the wind, they fill my eyes with sun and hope, I have a home, a refuge. Daddy, you are my favorite world, which knows me completely and you have always made my life something beautiful.

i think about my childhood home,

one of the two,

the house with the kumquat tree

and the bikes hidden behind it

i remember whisking flour and eggs and milk with my tiny hands, whisk always too big so that i would have to push and pull extra hard-

remembering my dad stood behind me, taller still

even with my pointed feet standing on shaky step stool

he always ate last, or by the stove

“but i’ve done my part” i imagine little me saying, shoving another bite of waxy pancake into my mouth

we switched to french toast this sunday, first sunday in awhile

and nothings changed, my dad still comes to the table last

but i’ve done my part i mutter
