Hunter Sylvester Bands List
Tumblr media
An INCOMPLETE list of some of the bands Hunter is canonically implied to listen to.
This includes bands from the spoken list, written list, his posters & more.
(With a few snippets of my opinion bleeding through because I am a dick sometimes lmao)
We’ll start of with some easy ones, the lists.
The bands Hunter verbally lists to Kevin:
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Metallica
Anthrax
Slayer
Megadeth
Motorhead
Guns N Roses (movie’s wrong)
Rage Against The Machine
Pantera
Emperor
Tool
Dio
Meshuggah
Opeth
Slipknot
Mastodon
Lamb Of God
Additional bands from the written lists he gives to Kevin:
Van Halen
Sepultura
Avenged Sevenfold (ugh)
Gojira
Kvelertak
Additional bands he wears t-shirts of:
Misfits
King Diamond
The stickers in Hunter’s locker:
Napalm Death
Mayhem
Cannibal Corpse (it’s only half a sticker but the font matches up)
Death
Other references:
Celtic Frost (Phone Background)
Gorgoroth (D&D character, ‘Malmsteen Of Gorgoroth’)
Okay, now for some of his posters:
Danzig
Paradise Lost
Ghost
Ozzy Osbourne (kind of included with Sabbath but he has an Ozzy poster so eh)
Blood Incantation
Morbid Angel
Pallbearer
Baroness
Katatonia
Gwar
Bell Witch
The Black Dahlia Murder
In Flames (movie’s wrong, don’t ask)
Testament
Twisted Sister (?????????)
The Sword
August Burns Red
Red Fang
Tomb Mold
Trivium
Amon Amarth
Goblin Cock
Attila
Steve Vai/Whitesnake
Black Label Society
Agalloch
Nile
Goatwhore
Obituary
Manowar (meh)
Poison Idea (random but ok)
I just left the ticket stubs out all together because there was some in there that I’m like...no??? They’re kinda hard to read at times anyway because a lot of them are super faded.
Again, this is not even remotely everything but I wanted to list some of the ones I’ve jotted down over time.
Screen-grab at the top of this post is yet another excellent example of Hunter giving Kevin ‘love me eyes.’
Also look at his stupid little bejeweled skull.
Tumblr media
Look at it. This silly fucker.
He’s just like me fr

Did you know that, in the late 70's, there was a violent rally held by angry rock fans in which they blew up disco records to "kill the disco movement" in response to it's place in both gay liberation and afro/latino empowerment plus their belief that it was destroying rock and roll?
Discotheque originated in french nightclubs in the twenties, thirties, and fourties. However, it was the mid seventies that brought about a strong American take on the genre. Disco was growing in the underground club, bar, and punk scene. Featuring rhythmic drums and african influenced beats, it was rapidly gaining popularity in the dance scene and massively outselling rock and roll. Rockers felt that switching up musically to sell better was synonymous with selling out. Plus why would they bother? They said that disco was a mindless fad compared to their superior lyrical work and sound.
For a few years the conflict of genre built tensions. Producers wanted more and more disco funk. Bringing about an age of gay liberation and putting black and brown artists in the spotlight, featuring openly queer black artists like Sylvester and Martha wash. Rock was being called on much less. It all came to a head in July of 1979.
youtube
"Disco Demolition Night" took place at Chicago's Comiskey Park between baseball games on July 12, 1979. It was organized by radio host and dj Steve Dahl. Calling for the death of disco, the end of the "musical disease." Dahl claims it was nothing but a harmless stunt; continuously denying its racist and homophobic nature.
The day after the event Dahl hosted his usual morning broadcast. He began by reading the headlines reporting the previous night's events, mocking the coverage, saying, "I think for the most part everything was wonderful. Some maniac cohos got wild, went down on the field. which you shouldn't have done. Bad little cohos"*
To my understanding Steve Dahl never renounced his feelings towards disco nor has he shown any remorse for his actions. Seeing as he still sells merchandise featuring the event on his website. Including hats and tshirts commemorating the night of 7-12-79.
Rolling Stone Critic Dave Marsh attended the event and wrote at the time, "Your most paranoid fantasy about where the ethnic cleansing of the rock radio could ultimately lead... white males 18 to 34 are the most likely to see disco as the product of homosexuals, black and latins, and therefore they're the most likely to respond to appeals to wipe out such threats to their security."
Fans rushed the field brandishing tshirts and banners stating "Disco Sucks." A notable phrase used in connection to the movement to kill disco. Still heard in passing to this day. The phrase may seem harmless today noting that we use "sucks" so casually. It is worth noting that at the time it was new slang; directly and intentionally homophobic. It is often forgotten exactly what we're accusing the subject of sucking.
The effects of Demolition Night swiftly radiated out into the media production circuit. Sending Disco back underground to the safe havens of queer clubs and bars, like the loft and stonewall, as well as the subterranean punk spaces of their origin.
Today it's commonly believed that disco's popularity did die in 1979. Producers, studios, and clubs started rebranding the genre as "dance" music. Even pioneers of disco became disillusioned with the genre noting that media producers had oversaturated disco sound, wringing out any cultural significance it had at the start. Making way for hip-hop, pop, and punk.
However, dancing to the selections of DJs had integrated into culture in major urban centers. As an activity it wasn't going anywhere. With the inability to capitalize on it the culture discovered a new lease of life, free of the labeling and profiteering. Disco may have been dead, but its influence was alive and well.
To learn more:
Tumblr media
A more extensive account of the culture and history can be found in this book "Love Saves the Day" by Tim Lawrence.
I also recommend this playlist curated by the Woody Guthrie memorial museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma during their exhibit of the same name earlier this summer. Exploring the history and sound of disco.
TL;DR - Disco was major to gay and poc empowerment. Then a bunch of people rioted and blew up disco records at a baseball game leading to the decline of Disco's popularity in mainstream media.
*Coho - noun; a person or thing that shows the existence or direction of a trend - (another definition is a kind of salmon but i have the feeling that would be inaccurate as funny as it may be)

So, you want to get into Italian Metal?
Who the fuck has ever asked for that? Anyways, here’s some recommendations:
Mortuary Drape
Old School Black Metal band, I highly recommend the albums “All the Witches Dance”, “Tolling 13 Knell”, and “Secret Sudaria”.
Sadist
Excellent Progressive Death Metal. Extremely technical and yet soulful.
Death SS
Despite the unfortunate name, they are NOT Nazis. The “SS” is short for “Steve Sylvester”, as in “The Death of Steve Sylvester”. Now since that’s out of the way, their music is more in the vein of traditional heavy metal with a tinge of doom, that sonically wouldn’t be too unbefitting next to First-Wave Black Metal.
Abysmal Grief
Doom Metal that’s heavily reliant on the “Church Organ” setting on keyboards. If you’re looking for something slow and yet spooky, this might be up your alley (although personally I’d just listen to some of the doomier Type O songs).
Cultus Sanguine
Doom Metal. I like to think of this band as a cousin to Abysmal Grief, in that they’re instrumentally similar with the main difference being the anguished vocals. Same appeal as Abysmal Grief, although the songs do get a bit same-y.
Gargoyle
A mix of extreme metal and traditional doom metal. Would definitely highly recommend. Unfortunately they’re not on Spotify, so I can’t put them on my playlists as much as I’d want to.
That’s all I have for now! You might ask, “Wait, where’s [blank]! They’re widely known and important to the Italian metal scene!” and the answer is they probably suck ass (I’m looking at you, Lacuna Coil). This is mainly just my personal taste, anyways.

Excerpt from Gangs With Greek Names by Steve Potter
I slouched across the room and flopped down into a blue beanbag chair. I gazed at the Farrah Fawcett poster on the wall above Greg's bed. I'd made the right choice during my questioning at Hell Night. If I had to pick only one of Charlie's Angels, yeah, she'd be the one. Beside her on the wall were posters featuring Barbie Benton, Brigitte Bardot, and that awesome one of Jacqueline Bisset from the movie The Deep. On the opposite wall, he'd taped a Sylvester Stallone poster from Rocky, and a Bruce Lee poster from Enter the Dragon, and a Tom Laughton poster from Billy Jack, and one of Charles Bronson from Death Wish. It interested me that Greg had arranged the female celebrities of sensual desire on one wall and the male celebrities of righteous anger on the other. All these idols gazed straight ahead out of their respective posters at the viewer. Because they were arranged across from one another, however, they appeared to be taking part in a big group staring contest, the muses of feminine beauty staring down the idols of masculine violence. Gangs With Greek Names, Steve Potter

Today's compilation:
12 by 12: The Singles 1990-1991 1991 Hi-NRG / House / Synthpop
Here's a pretty decent sampler of rare tunes from San Francisco's Megatone Records, a label that was founded by dance music legend Patrick Cowley in 1981, the year before he would tragically succumb to AIDS. When Megatone opened, it was used as an outlet for both Cowley and other dance legend Sylvester's own material, but after Cowley's passing, the label continued on and eventually diversified its roster. And this here is a collection of songs that they put out between '90 and '91.
Now, while the bulk of these tracks are hi-NRG—a post-disco type of music with stabby electronic basslines that mixed extremely well with both cocaine and sweat and was also a fixture of both gay dancefloors and fitness tapes throughout much of the 80s—I think the best track on here is, hands-down, the opener, which is a slowish and intense Balearic trip hop-breakbeat-type remix of David Diebold & Kim Cataluna's cover of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," done by someone named Steve Bourasa, who did a lot of work for Cali-based DJ labels at the time. Escapist strings, psychedelic vocals, some long and distorted heavy guitar chords, and an occasional infusion of Spanish guitar synth; basically the 80s-early 90s Ibiza vibe to a T. Seriously, what a tune here!
And for some of that great hi-NRG, there's a few bops on this CD, but for me, the best offering is "Let the Rhythm Move You," by Touch-N-Go, a duo who ended up only putting out two singles in 1990, before disappearing. This particular song of theirs, from its acid bassline, to its ethereal string melody, and to its clinking new wave synth stabs, sorta sounds like if New Order was fronted by a woman. Intricate, well-layered, dancy bliss.
Not all of this album seems to have stood the test of time, though. A bunch of these tracks feel a bit disposable, and there seems to be a general fondness across the board for that Art of Noise-patented technique of peppering the tunes with these sharp and choppy samples of things like hard rock and metal guitar. A lot of acts ended up doing that whole gimmick to death in the 80s and early 90s, and while it still works with some songs like INXS' "Need You Tonight," it's not a technique that seems to have really aged all that well, generally.
Still though, if you want a few sweet morsels of those electronically throbbing early 90s dance tunes that sounded like they had no intention of ever leaving the 80s, as well as a killer remix of a Jefferson Airplane cover, look no further than this release 😊.
Highlights:
Diebold & Cataluna - "White Rabbit" David Diebold & Ernest Kohl - "Dance Right Back Into Heaven (Remix)" Jo-Carol & Leo - "Jump Up for Love" Touch-N-Go - "Let the Rhythm Move You"
