Something on my brain since forever is Toshinori learning Izuku was the most seriously injured from the summer camp attack

There's no time to rest or even breathe. Toshnori has to keep pushing ahead because it's not over. Bakugou has been taken and Toshinori won't stop until the child is safe and out of the villains' grasp. There's no time to make a personal visit for only his successor as he recovers.

But he ends up at the hospital anyway. Tsukauchi informs him that Yaoyorozu has something she wants to share that she believes will help with the rescue.

They speak with the young girl in awe of her quick thinking and resilience as she hands over the tracker. It truly feels like everything for their counterattack is coming together.

But then they get into the hall. Tsukauchi with tracker in hand, ready to call their special unit and head out, when Toshinori freezes. Drawn to the opposite way down the hall

"This'll take a minute," Tsukauchi says catching him off guard. "You have time, Toshi......go see him."

Toshinori wants to argue but it stops dead in his throat. Because he knows Recovery Girl had gotten here earlier. He'd heard the full report. How many students were in critical condition from the villains' gas, how many injured, and how close to death his kid had come.

"Thank you."

He stands in front of the hospital room door, starting at the handle, still feeling ice cold from when he first saw the nameplate that read: Midoriya Izuku.

He has to breathe, remind himself he's on borrowed time, that he has no choice but to open the door and step inside.

When he does he finds he's not alone. Recovery Girl stands, leaning over the bed. She sighs as he slides the door shut. She doesn't even turn to look at him. Somehow, she must know. He deflates, leaving his muscle form for later when he needs it.

"I didn't expect you to be here. Thought you'd be leading the rescue mission."

"I am...I just..." The words die in his throat as he closes in, rounding so he can see around the old hero's shoulder. His eyes draw up, taking in the thick plaster around each arm. Up, until he's sucking in a sharp breath, as he sees the boy's face. Jaw tight, flush to his cheeks, sweat along his forehead, he looks like he's done nothing in the last 24 hours but fight for his life.

"Is he—?"

"He's stable. I just finished his second round of treatment." Another sigh, and she hops down from the stool she'd been perched on. "But he needs time before I can treat him again...this fever's been doing a number on him."

He doesn't even realize he's filling the space she's made for him until he's right there, knees against the hospital bed.

"I can't stay," he says for some reason. Recovery Girl hums. "We're making our move on the League tonight." And yet he doesn't move. Doesn't thank Recovery Girl for all she's done. He just stands there, frozen.

He can only stand and witness every flinch and twitch of agony that pairs with every small puff into an oxygen mask. He can only reach out so slowly until his knuckles brush against Izuku's burning cheek.

"He's in good hands," Recovery Girl says, voice extremely gentle. Toshinori nods, turning his hand to cup the boy's cheek. "I don't doubt it." For a second Izuku's eyelashes flutter (and Toshi's heart stops) but besides a deep inhale and his head rolling into Toshinori's hand, there's nothing else, no shine of recognition or sign of consciousness. Just fever, delirium, and pain. So, so much pain.

Toshinori lets himself—or tries to—breathe. He takes the boy in. The fact that at the very least Izuku is here, safe, and breathing along with him. Because for now, that has to be enough.

Because All Might's work is not done.

He straightens, from where he'd been practically bowed over the bed. With once last lapse in strength he presses his palm to the boy's forehead, pushes his bangs out of the way, and gently soothes over the bandages that have been wrapped there, before he's forced to pull away.

It's like losing a limb as he does.

"This wasn't your fault, Toshinori."

Wasn't it?

He'd stayed back from the training camp. Left his colleagues and students vulnerable. Left them all to fight so desperately alone.

He's failed as a mentor. All he's done is left Izuku to struggle, so that the boy can only keep using his quirk to the point of breaking—of a physical, no return.

Head down he doesn't stop walking, only barely whispers out, "Thank you for taking care of him..."

But he does pause when he hears her sigh one last time.

"Don't thank me for that...it's what I do." And then. "And what you can do is rescue that child from those villains... and come back safe."

Toshinori blinks, hand raised to the door, ready to pull up his muscle form to rejoin Tsukauchi in the hall. He turns back to find her looking at him, no, through him, before she glances to the quietly breathing boy in the hospital bed, and then back again. She holds Toshinori with a serious glare, one that follows him, along with her words, until the very moment he's watching his boy sail through the sky with his classmates in tow as he faces down his most dangerous foe. The very moment when he realizes as a teacher, as a mentor, as a—she's right, he can't die yet.

"He'll need you...when he wakes up."

okay, i won't lie nor try to defend ushijima. he's totally clueless about relationships and dating. 'cause girl, all that's in his head is... well, volleyball....

but of course, for the sake of the headcanons and our delusions, let's break down how he would be as a lover.

i feel like ushijima would be a shy (or awkward, rather) lover at first, hesitating with initiating PDA or affection in general.

he also becomes such a yapper as your relationship with him goes on. telling you about his day, volleyball practice, more volleyball stuff, training, etc.

even though he's a yapper, he's also a listener! 10/10 would listen to you talk the whole day because he loves it when you yap to him. actively listens, reacting to your words here and there and giving his thoughts on them, yadayadayada. yapper x yapper, guys???

regarding the relationship, however, ushijima is a very private person. only a few knows that he's dating someone already, as he doesn't actively tell people that “oh, i'm in a relationship.”

i feel like he'd only reveal that he's in a relationship when asked... so, his mother found out that he's finally dating like, almost a year into the relationship. 'cuz he never mentioned it. and when his mother pointed that out, he retorted with, “you never asked?? 🫤🤨”

additionally, he strays away from social media. so, people really wouldn't know unless they ask. they'd just be shock to see a ring on ushiwaka's finger one day lmao.

^^no posts on his socmed accounts at all. faceless and full government name on his account and with less than 50 friends. only has social media accounts for the sole purpose of messaging and liking your posts.

still, he's updated with the latest trends and news, if you update him, that is. ushi will also participate in doing the trends with you. a lil' stiff though, but he's trying, yeah. no complaints at all.

“huh? i... i don't understand. what is ‘throw it back’ and how do i do it?”

ANYWAY, ushijima isn't really one to do endearments. be calls you by your name or a nickname he came up with. sometimes, you'll hear him call you “love” or “babe”.

there are also times that he gets insecure all of a sudden and begins to question if he's doing a good job on being your lover. would slightly panic if he feels that he's not doing enough. please assure him that he's doing amazing. 😞

during arguments, he talks things through. does not dare raise his voice. well—there are times that his voice gets a little loud, but he feels absolutely guilty and shitty after, so he apologizes.

and yes, he apologizes first, and even though you are the one at fault. doesn't like getting on a fight with you, so... 🤷‍♀️ but he does try to make you realize your mistake and hope to not start another argument while doing so. he'd get upset if that happens.

when upset, wakatoshi does not stay out of your sight, but, he's there. in the corner, sulking like a child in silence, looking at you with longing in his eyes, waiting for you to either woo him or for himself to not handle it anymore and apologize then cling to you once more.

doesn't say ‘i love you’ much. but he'll reciprocate each and every ‘i love you’ that you tell him! on rare occasions, he's the one saying ily first, especially when he feels that he's not saying the words much.

Okay, the previous draft you had for the girls are fighting is so big brain, and honestly as a concept goes waaay too hard! But I see how it would look awkward in practice. You know, i really like that we can see Tetsu's face i think that was a good move, and it really does carry forward. I mean this is a moment that lowkey shaped the way Yusuke views Tetsuya and the Usagi at large (and arguably himself).

I kinda feel like your original idea still comes through though. I may be talking out of my ass, but hear me out: to Yusuke, Tetsuya exists as a living symbol of the Usagi. Having Tetsu literally stand above Yusuke places him in a weak submissive position, he's completely helpless and is being fully judged in what's probably one of his weakest moments. In Yusuke's mind, he IS being judged by the Usagi. We're literally watching Yusuke be turned away by THE symbol of the usagi. 

and by his brother…

It's almost biblical dude. And i think THATS why the outside framing hits. This is an incredibly intimate moment that feels…wrong to watch. The scene around us is practically Begging the audience to turn our gaze and spare Yusuke the embarrassment of being watched. but we still choose to push those bushes aside and take a peek…

WAAAAHH I love your take on that chapter and the illustration!! You're so right. At the time, Kyouhei (their dad) was still holding the Usagi-sama title, so in a sense they were both being held against the wall, but as future Family Head, Tetsuya had to make a decision to stand for the Usagi name. Regardless, Yusuke had always seen Tetsuya as a role model more than anybody else, and being rejected by their father didn't hurt nearly as much as being rejected by him. They're brothers, but they're twenty years apart and Yusuke spent much of his childhood at his house and under his care, so Tetsuya has practically been a father to Yusuke too, more so than Kyouhei was. You might have noticed we actually tend to refer to Tetsu as his brother-dad sometimes hgfgjh you'll be seeing more of that in the latest Sword Lifted chapters.

And also I agree with you! Chapter 1 goes criminally hard, it's so so poignant and still makes me absolutely insane, it actually hasn't changed significantly from how it was back in December 2023 when it was first written and most family lore was in progress/very vague. Fun fact, what is now Chapter 1 of a 45-chapter fic was actually a little one shot thing Rhin had meant as a gift for me, after a sudden collective episode of insanity and me drawing their Apoc Miyamoto (now Yusuke) with my own rabbits Yuki and Jojo.

There was plenty of screaming, plenty of "OHMYGOSH THEY'RE RELATEEEDDDD", plenty of gushing about each other's characters, plenty of lore-adjusting and giggles about there being two Jotaros, and before we knew it we had a whole plot staring at us in the face. At the time, Rhin had been meaning to write something about their version of Usagi in the Good timeline, where he was not Leo's partner but Kenichi and Mariko's. All of that converged into the RRCU as we know it today!

The reason we're each taking care of a different "timeline" is merely that Leo's established partner in each of our canon verses (Run O' The Mill Verse and Covetverse) was different, as well as other stuff going on with the Hamatos, so in Run O' The Mill Rabbit, Leo ends up as Yuki's partner, whereas in Covet (the Good one), Leo's partner is a human named Juan, and in Soft Apoc (Covet's Bad one) Resistance Leader Leo is dating an older, rugged Yusuke who goes by the name of Miyamoto. That means in the Covetverse, and by extension SL, Yuki's romantic partner is Cooper the dog instead. It's an adjustment that just needed to happen, BUT! Save for a couple of events, the canon lore of the Usagi family remains consistent and exactly the same. In fact, everything that's been written so far in H&H and everything we know about Yusuke's life before meeting Yuki at the bar, including the Girls Are Fighting scene, happens in exactly the same way. The timeline thing adds a big element of fun because Rhin and I can both build from the same lore but still surprise each other about how things happen and do it our own way, hehehe~

Man, now you got me infodumping about timelines and stuff- It's a bit confusing, I know! But there's really not that much of a difference when it comes to the rabbits, they're the same characters in just slightly different circumstances. H&H will only diverge from SL's canon in its very last chapter, and I'll add a little note about it when that happens. ANYWAY! That was all to say that SL's chapter 1 went criminally hard for a REASON! It was meant to be a standalone thing to narratively cement the connection between all our characters, and I hold it forever like the freaking treasure it is!

Moving on to paws/feet, I LOVE drawing them, and in fact I love it so much that I keep drawing my characters barefoot even when it would make a lot more sense for them to wear shoes dfjghjhh in fact Rhin often writes them wearing and taking off their shoes and in my art I always gracefully ignore the shoes, apologies for that! Other times I'll put sandals on them, or otherwise shoes that leave their toesies free, which is honestly hilarious but also HAVE YOU WATCHED ZOOTOPIA?? They know what I'm talking about. We deserve to see their cute giant feet and I'll stop now before I get pointed at-

You tell him that there's nothing stopping the night from being special anyway, and he asks you how that could be. That's when you tell him you love him, outside of a crappy fast food chain with rain soaking into your coat. He realizes that he wouldn't have wanted it to happen any other way.
