Major Benjamin Tallmadge (born February 25, 1754) is an officer for the Continental Army and the 2nd Continental Light Dragoons that went on to become a spy for them during the American Revolutionary War. Joining together with childhood friends Caleb Brewster and Abraham Woodhull, the three formed what would later become the Culper Ring.

The organization received the aid and assistance of various others, including Abe's former lover, Anna Strong. The organization would report to Commander-in-Chief, George Washington. Tallmadge was a Captain until the official founding of the Culper Ring in 1777 and was promoted to Major soon after.

It's clear through his actions that Benjamin Tallmadge is a strong, loyal soldier and a leader with honorable intentions... most of the time. He isn't afraid to bend rules when absolutely necessary, but can sometimes be led too far by his emotions and his own personal sense of justice. Duty and honor are extremely important to him, as are loyalty and trust and the value of his friends; those things he places above all else. He takes his duties very seriously, and there are times he might come off as just an innocent preacher’s son from a backwater fishing village... but he is so much more.

Underneath the pomp and attempts at restraint is a young man who can be hot-headed and stubborn, mischievous, even playful. There are a lot of emotions pent up behind his officer's restraint--a boy trying to become a man, to live up to the image of a gentleman and an officer who carries the burden of command and of the guilt of fallen friends, comrades, and family. All of those ideals and baggage and the burden of caring about so many things and so many people can really weigh on him, can cause him to be short-sighted, restless, irrational. He’s trying--he’s trying to keep himself together, trying to keep the Culper Ring together, trying to run a spy network, trying not to get his friends killed, his dragoons killed, himself killed. As he goes through the war, he grows and becomes disillusioned in some things--namely, Washington himself--but despite everything, he continues to push ever onward for the cause and most importantly, for his loved ones.

Operation Stumpy Re-Read

TWOW: Barristan II (summary)

His gut feels twisted from nervousness as he rides through the gates. He knows that the feeling will go away when time slows down in the chaos of battle. Dany's horse is easily outpacing the lads and the rest of the cavalry; Barristan is pleased because he intends to outrun the Widower and strike the first blow. The Yunkai'i are totally unprepared and Barristan closes in on the Harridan, the largest of the trebuchets. The stormcrows take up the cry, "Daario!" and "Stormcrows, fly!"

Don't be surprised when, later on in the story, Daario kills the guy who shouted his name.

Barristan thinks that he will never again doubt the valor of sellswords.

Didn't this guy go to war against the Golden Company?

There are only thirty yards between the horse and the Yunkai'i legions by the time any defense is mounted. The air fills with arrows. A squire for the stormcrows is killed, and a bolt pierces Barristan's shield. There are three horn blasts and the pitfighters emerge from the gate behind them.

Barristan's responsible for that squire's death. I'm keeping count.

Nothing abnormal about those horn blasts. We're still waiting.

Barristan glances back to see the pitfighters. There are about two hundred of them, but they make enough noise for two thousand. One woman stands out, wearing nothing but greaves, sandals, a chainmail skirt, and a python. Barristan is a bit shocked and, watching her breasts bouncing around, thinks that this day is sure to be her last. The pitfighters are mostly shouting "Loraq!" and "Hizdar!" but some do call out "Danaerys!" Larraq is hit in the chest with an arrow, bringing Barristan’s attention forward, but the squire keeps the banners held high and shakes it off.

Why is there always a distracting half-naked woman?

The unsullied begin marching through the gates, and Barristan sees that the Yunkai'i have missed their chance to effectively launch a counterattack. As he watches more of the slave legions get slaughtered, mostly those who were chained together and could not retreat, he wonders where the sellsword companies like the treacherous Second Sons have gone. The unsullied finish lining up outside the gates, implacable even when one of their own number falls with a crossbow bolt to the neck.

It feels like regardless of the outcome of this battle, it's the slaves who will lose. I wonder if that's by design.

In case you missed the Tyrion chapter, Brown Ben Plumm and his Second Sons currently have cold feet, and are carefully considering their options for switching sides. Again. (You laugh, but watch, she'll let them.)

On a different note, now that the Unsullied have marched through the gates, Daenerys' entire army, with the exception of the Brazen Beasts, is positioned outside the walls of Meereen. Meanwhile, the Shavepate has the sole authority to lock the gates at his discretion. How did we get here? How does this even happen? The last time Daenerys was in Meereen, this guy was unemployed. It's truly remarkable.

Tumco draws Barristan's attention to the bay, asking "Why are there so many ships?" Barristan remembers that yesterday there were twenty, but now there are thrice that many. His heart sinks when he reasons that the ships from Volantis must have arrived, but then sees that some of the ships are crashing together. He asks Tumco, whose young eyes can see more clearly, to identify the banners. Tumco says "Squids, big squids. Like in the Basilisk Isles, where sometimes they drag whole ships down." Barristan replies, "Where I'm from, we call them krakens."

Rejoice, for the true savior has arrived!

I'm guessing those Volantis ships aren't too far behind Vicky, so this relief won't last long.

Realizing that the Greyjoys have arrived, his first thought is "Has Balon joined with Joffrey, or the Starks?" But he realizes that he's heard that Balon is dead, and wonders if this has something to do with the Balon's son, the boy who was a ward of the Starks. He sees that ironmen are coming ashore, fighting the Yunkish, and says, surprised, "They are on our side!" The sellswords did not come to meet his charge because they were already preoccupied with the ironborn!

No, only the television show sends half-dead Theon and Asha to Meereen, despite the fact that they're supposed to be captured, and freezing to death in a remote northern village. Sorry Barry, Daenerys is getting the The Bad Greyjoys, as God intended.

Really not following his line of thinking with that Joffrey or the Starks thought.

The sellswords did not come to meet his charge because they were already preoccupied with the ironborn! Barristan is almost gleeful. "It's like Baelor Breakspear and Prince Maekar, the hammer and the anvil. We have them! We have them!"

If these books have taught me anything, it's that this level of overconfidence is always swiftly punished.

Leave it up to Barry to suck off some dead Targaryens in the middle of battle. If you would like to know more about this Baelor hammer and Maekar anvil - um, why?

Final thoughts:

The Barristan Selmy chapters may have concluded, but rest assured that my intense hatred for him will persist for eternity.

One more Meereen, guys. You're doing great.

The Devil's Belt was certainly no place for a novice sailor. Ben at least had some claim to previous sailing experience but with the war going on at the same time and to be at the mercy of the currents and shoals, it was going to be particularly dangerous, especially around Hell's Gate. Oblivious of course to Ben's very capable and wild guide for those waters. "The Devil's Belt can overwhelm most able sailors, Major. Perhaps instead you might take the word of an old hand and try the North Cove of Saybrook Point as a more welcoming bay." Connecticut, undoubtedly safer for Ben so long as the pirates were indeed on their side. A clue that the navy were indeed keeping their charts up to date for the surrounding waters.

He did manage a little huff of a laugh at the preference of Ben's company of animals. He supposed he agreed, having a companion who could listen without comment or judgement could be most reassuring at times. "I imagine such a companionship is a lifeline, as a cavalry man you must be close to your steed." He spoke to his ships often, usually to tell them off or to worry over them but somehow that seemed more absurd to admit than talking with a living, breathing companion.

Still, Nelson had given Ben the space and what privacy could be afforded in the hold to think on his lost brother. Truly it seemed the man was reeling from his death still, which was only natural. He thought of his siblings he was most likely the one to be lost and he wondered if they would kick up the same fuss for him as Ben was doing for Samuel, somehow he doubted it.

Glad of the confirmation of the offer being enough, Nelson let out a little sigh of relief. "I thank you for your kind considerations, Sir," he was sure to acknowledge, kind indeed for an enemy to consider that he would have to take his men many miles away and into a hostile environment for who knew how long. "It is refreshing to know that there can and should always be some humanity in such circumstances." Although he doubted very much he would not be written up for feeding the starving enemy... would it be so harmful to let them break bread aboard? No, his crew would not sit for that sort of radicalism just yet. Nelson put the lid back on the barrel, knocking it back into place with that same iron bar he had used to open it.

"Right then lads, we will have to get this up to the lower..." ah layman's terms and he made sure to turn to Ben, "up to the deck above before we can use the pulleys. If three of your men can help Mr Hardy with the barrel, and the rest for the crates we shall be up in no time at all?" There was no access otherwise in the hold but the space to move the barrels was wide and accommodating on the ladders at least for that very reason. It would not be a big logistical operation, one barrel and a few crates was hardly demanding thankfully.

The deck above was lit up with natural sunlight as the cargo doors were opened for the two decks above and a system already waiting to take the supplies up to the main deck. Nelson had clearly wanted this part of their deal done quickly, not wanting Ben and his men below deck for longer than necessary for security and he privately worried for their safety too.

The thought of having a pastime during war, no matter how simplistic, was a little jarring after so many months – nay, years – of total focus. Although many of his men opted for levity, Ben, himself, chose pragmatism and responsibility. With a disbelieving smile, he agreed, “You might turn me into a sailor yet, Captain. Though of course you’re right…were I to attempt sailing in the Devil’s Belt, for instance, I’d assuredly get overthrown or worse.” His friend Caleb was notorious for weaving in and out of those precarious waters, but he didn’t dare follow in his footsteps.

The deeper they stepped into the ship’s hold, the more suffocating the air became. Ben’s lungs felt tight, thin, and closing his eyes a moment, he tried to shut out the choppy sound of waves rolling against the wooden siding.

Once Nelson spoke again, Ben cracked an eye open and spared him a sidelong glance. “It’s my favored form of transportation,” he agreed. “Perhaps I am blessed after all, since in addition to traveling in comfort, I also have a wordless companion. Sometimes, animals are the very best for that sort – you talk, and they listen.” But then, perhaps that sounded absurd. Oftentimes, bleakness and despair brought him to spill his guts to those who couldn’t speak back – most likely because he didn’t truly wish to have anyone analyze what he, himself knew to be a debilitating plight. He didn’t want insight shone upon his heart and soul.

The group came to a stop, and despite the less than welcoming surroundings, Nelson maintained his amenable exterior.

The words about Samuel drew a lump to his throat, and smiling, Ben softly agreed, “He was the best of men – far more than I could ever hope to be.”

Nelson ushered him forward, and once the captain lifted the barrel, the unpleasant stench of preserved meat wafted in the air; yet to those who were starving and malnourished, it smelled heavenly. And despite the fact this was assuredly a fair trade, Ben couldn’t help but feel a stab of guilt. He hated taking from anyone, even the enemy; and most especially a fair and unexpectedly kind foe.

Looking up at Nelson with a quick little nod, he agreed, “Yes – thank you, sir, this seems beyond sufficient for our trade. My men are reasonable, so I know they will not demand more. You and your own, after all, will be trapped onboard this vessel for the foreseeable future without the convenience of land bartering.” Or pillaging, in some cases – he’d certainly heard the horror stories.

Long before anyone lived in these hills, beings of immeasurable darkness and incomprehensible madness were entombed here. It was during this bygone age, when the Appalachians towered much higher and more menacing than the gentle slopes and ridges we know today, that they were conscripted after a great battle to serve as the final prison for those dark forces. But of course, time marches inexorably on. Eons passed and the walls of the prison begin to wear thin. And Things that slumbered soundlessly below for millennia began to stir and become restless.

They began to call to those who would hear them.

To dig. To seek and find. To follow and serve. To keep this dark and bloody land for themselves and their masters.

The Green. The Dark. 

Blood. Earth. Coal. Rain. Fire. Woods. This is a world where names and places have power, where energies and spirits, crawling things, witches and haints, mouthless hunting entities that hunger, are all entrenched firmly in and around a mountain chain spread across an ocean and older than bone.

Was talking to @firstmategod and I’ve determined that a Turn/Terror Crossover AU would have the following:

Ben, a Royal Navy Lieutenant, trying to join up on Erebus--in part because it’s the flagship but also because he has a massive crush on Fitzjames. But then he ends up getting put on Terror, which he’s huffy about, but fine.

It turns out Terror is a better fit for our Bennyboy anyway because as it turns out he is also an anxious weirdo misfit. But good luck getting him to admit that.

Ben is Besties With Caleb Brewster, Shitstirrer Marine Extraordinaire.

Ben tries to save someone who also falls into the water, but the only reason he doesn’t also die is because he had a fucking rope with him when he stupidly dove in. (He then gets scolded by Crozier, Blanky, Macca, and Caleb.)

Through the Regency era, well into the 1970s, Arthur took varying forms of... "sleep aids." And by sleep aids I mean opium, laudanum, various types of spirits, and other narcotics. Following his getting clean of hard drugs in the 1980s-90s, the most you'll see him doing is a heavy cup of sleepytime tea and/or a nice smoke of tobacco.

He likes to keep his wits about him but I'd be lying if I said he didn't indulge in a stout nightcap every so often.

Arthur:

Is basically a Disney princess when it comes to animals

Refused to speak French in the presence of the ruling monarchs long after the Battle of Hastings entirely out of spite. If you're going to rule him, you need to learn the common tongue. (In this case, Old English. There were probably punishments, but he was physically 10-12 at the time and thanks to his magic, was a massive pain to keep locked up.)

Is highly enduring; meaning, he can take a lot of physical hits and just keep going. In RPG terms, he has high HP, high DEF, high END. He can take a stupid amount of punishment and dish it back out in kind. While he isn’t as super strong as say, America, and can’t bend steel rebar, Arthur is a heavy hitter in his own right, beyond what normal humans are capable of.

Ben:

Is an 18th century Horse Girl

Had romantic feelings for Nathan Hale

Is a big flirtatious party boy right up until he starts feeling out of his socio-economic depth. Then he's back to feeling like a backwater oyster boy.
