Oh wow so my hero is ending in five chapters, any idea what those five chapters will be? We know we have that new stranger and the todoroki household to deal with so what else could they cover?
Well there’s obviously a lot to go over, but I expect some things (todofam) to get a lot more focus and page space than others (Gentle and Nagant) so to focus my answers on, well, what I expect to be the focus:
One chapter (426) will be, as I think we all can tell, the Todoroki resolution. Talked about my expectations/ worries for that here.
Next (427) will probably feature Uraraka & whatever happened to Toga in some way. Although since Hori dosn't always treat her the best (I mean I do think her villain fight was the best, but I don’t believe that was on purpose), I wouldn't be surprised if her chapter shares page time with other student plot lines, whatever happened to Spinner and/or the heteromorph plotline, and other miscellaneous stuff like Gentle getting released from prison.
Mystery person I'll bet will probably actually be two chapters (428 & 429): a) because it's Midoriya's resolution and b) because it'd naturally need more time for that; introducing a new character and all, bit of backstory to explain why they were tied up in some house and had to cut themselves loose with with sissors. Especially if it goes the way I except; mystery guy's a poor jaded victim-villain on their way to becoming the next Tomura, but Deku will save them and it'll be presented as though that means society is now improved such that it won't fail any more future Tenko Shimuras. ...Even though a) that's a hard sell after murdering Tenko Shimura in the arc that was specifically representing how thing will go from now on and b) that idea entirely misses the point of Tenko Shimura's story. But even giving this two dedicated chapters, that's the best Deku can really do so...guess you've still just got to hope a hero's around to save you. If not; sucks to suck, good luck with villainy and/or dying.
And uh, last chapter (430 if all our math is right) will probably just be your standard fare “5 or so years later" chapter about everyone as pro heroes. Everything is great and fine and so much better for no real reason and they'll all live happily ever after for anyone still alive; The End.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Although if I may be spiteful; one thing I hope doesn’t get touched on is the quirk singularity doomsday plot line. Because as is, it still looks like the best case is for humanity to become an endangered species as soon as around the time of Class 1A’s eventual retirement (presumably their last decade or two spent dealing with panic over that). All because hero society refused to look where things are bad or inconvenient; and just when a solution, a treatment & cure to this condition was available to them anyway…Deku smashed it into dust because that’s the only way the little All Might clone could conceive of to beat the big bad villain.
And again, I know this is spiteful, but I rather like the idea of Deku murdering Tomura having such a serious consequence.
Hi I'm mad
#this is the only place I can vent about My Hero stuff#I'm so pissed that Toga is dead it's so fucked up#like everything about it is so fucked up#it started with Jin being killed#all he wanted to do was protect his friends#but Hawks mercilessly killed him while he begged for his life#and then in the big battle Toga didn't get to kill Hawks and avenge her friend#and that scum gets to live and continue being a hero#and then Toga dies too while characters with significantly worse injuries somehow survive#like are you shitting me she dies when DABI survived???#dude is a charcoal skeleton there's no fucking way he should be alive#and Uraraka went through this whole deal of questioning heroes' actions because of what Toga said to her#Toga and Uraraka finally reaching an understanding and bonding just for Toga to die is such garbage#Toga wanted to be accepted and she found it in the League#then had to watch her friends all die when all most of them wanted was just a better society#but she could have stayed with Uraraka#it would have been so much more meaningful if Toga had lived and inspired Uraraka to go into like social work#helping people who were outcasts because of their quirks#working with Toga who also knew about Spinner and Jin and Shigaraki's experiences#it's just disgusting and shows that the author doesn't understand his own world#it honestly also gives off homophobia#like he had these little glimmers of queer rep with Magne and Toga#but Magne was brutally killed#Toga died after the briefest gay moment with her and Uraraka#plus we know Jin was an ally because he threatened to kill another villain for misgendering Magne but Jin died too#honestly the only highlights of this ending for me are that Nagant and Gentle/La Brava got to live and be free#I've read this far but I honestly don't know if I care enough to finish now that Toga is seemingly confirmed dead#this is why I don't pick up shonen manga or anime anymore#toga himiko#ochako uraraka
Temari, Juvia, Uraraka, Tsuya, Starfire & Zantanna
Do you think you'd form your own super hero team? With Ino as the leader? I mean you're all already there anyway.
My muse is bored and wants curious anons. No questions are off limits, abuse this opportunity!
Tumblr media
"Honestly don't care enough to be part of a superhero team. Much less with people I don't know. I mean, if asked, sure I could team up every so often. But more as a reserved member, I suppose? Though, I'd much rather stick around in Suna, and make sure that my Village is protected."
Tumblr media
"A superhero team could be fun. If Juvia can be of value, why not? Juvia enjoys make new friends after all."
Tumblr media
"I suppose that wouldn't be so bad. It'd be an experience, and we'd all get to learn from each other, so I suppose maybe I could get behind it?"
Tumblr media
"I'm with Ochako on this one, kerro. Our teamwork could improve this way, so it's worth a shot."
"Ooooh, an all girl power team? Count me in!"
"... I'm already part of a superhero team, but I wouldn't mind being a reserve member to be called upon if absolutely needed."
It's not just the way every villain dies it's the mean-spiritedness of each death. Kurogiri begs AFO to give Shigaraki back so he could return to the league and Bakugo just blows him up and no one reacts including his two closest friends who are sitting right there. Shigaraki turns into dust after it's revealed to him that he was manipulated his whole life into becoming what he is and that's somehow not even enough to warrant sympathy from our all-loving protagonist Deku who hits the conclusion that euthanizing Shigaraki was saving him. Himiko Toga essentially commits suicide because the answer to the question if heroes will save even bad victims like her is no she still has to go to prison. She never receives any comfort or atonement for Hawks who murdered her best friend, nor does Uraraka acknowledge that action was wrong. Spinner gave his all to the point of literally destroying his mind to try to save Shigaraki and Shigaraki just dies. Twice gave his life to save the league and was even stabbed by Hawks someone he empathized with and thought was a friend only to be taken advantage of and his sacrifice was completely pointless because the league all died miserable anyway. Not a single member of the Todoroki besides Shoto (my boy did nothing wrong) lifted a finger to help Toya until the last possible minute and now he gets to die a slow agonizing death on life support.
You can kill characters off but like why did Horikoshi have to completely dehumanize them? If death is supposed to be "saving" these villains by giving them release from their suffering in life why is every death as fucking miserable as possible to make each character like 'they suffered their entire lives and then thy died'. What purpose did it serve besides pandering to a part of your audience that was committed to not caring for your themes of sympathizing with the villains and saving the villains in the first place no matter how much you tried bending over backwards to satisfy them.
The long way home
Based on the mha final volume leaks. Contains spoilers
Angst with happy ending
It doesn't occur to Katsuki that he's losing Izuku until Kirishima says something that hurts him deep inside.
"It looks like Bakugo is getting rejected!" He says it as it's something funny because he has no idea how much it pains Katsuki to hear it; he doesn't know all the things the pro hero has realized at that exact moment.
Katsuki grips the steering wheel tighter until his knuckles turn white; nobody notices his distress because Izuku is in the back seat, and Kirishima is too busy looking at the young teacher who's blinking in confusion.
Izuku has always been quite dense when it comes to feelings, but Katsuki didn't know how bad it was until now.
"Huh?"
"He wants you to work at his hero agency, dude."
Kirishima is not wrong, but he's not exactly right either; Katsuki's offer is just another way to remind Izuku all the things they dreamed of as kids. They had always wanted to work together; kicking villain's asses side by side. But Katsuki also wants an excuse to see him every single day.
He hoped Izuku could understand that, but he either doesn't or maybe he simply refuses to acknowledge it.
Either way. It hurts.
"Alright." He mumbles then because he doesn't know what to say. Then, after a while, it occurs to him that his job offer could be interpreted another way. "Shit! Uhh... I didn't mean it like a sidekick! We can... it can be our agency if you want to."
Katsuki catches a glimpse of Izuku's smile through the rear view mirror, and he regrets looking at it in the first place because he's always loved that smile.
"Sorry, Kacchan, but I still want to be a teacher, so I don't think I'll have too much time for that."
He can't help but grimace at that, but he tries to focus on the road ahead.
"I understand," he says after a while.
Finally, Kirishima senses that something's wrong because he starts talking about the party.
Maybe he can have another opportunity later that night.
He sits as close to Izuku as possible and drinks as much as he does, leaning his body closer and closer, mostly because his childhood friend doesn't protest.
Katsuki is glad to see the other losers, he has missed them, and he knows he should try to spend more time with them because he hasn't seen them in ages, and he makes sure to see his nerd regularly, but he still wants to be with Izuku even more.
However, since he's constantly looking at the nerd closely, he notices that Izuku's eyes are focused elsewhere.
He's looking at Uraraka.
Katsuki feels a second stab of pain that night; his mind is a bit too clouded with alcohol to try to behave like a fucking adult so he does something the high-school version of himself would.
"Oi, nerd!"
"Huh?" Izuku blinks his pretty green eyes at him, and even though he's clearly distracted thinking about something else, Katsuki feels a bit better because he's no longer looking at Round cheeks.
"Keep your eyes on me."
"Oh, right!" Izuku mumbles, face turning slightly pink. "I'm sorry! We're you saying something?"
Katsuki wasn't saying anything, but he comes up with something on the spot because he can't stand Izuku paying too much attention to anyone that's not him.
After a few hours, Uraraka leaves first, and Katsuki feels a bit relieved until he notices that Izuku is looking at the entrance too.
"Someone special on your mind?" Aoyama gets closer to their table and puts a hand around Izuku's shoulders; he's a bit drunk too.
"Everyone is special to me!" Izuku says immediately, and even though Katsuki knows why he says that (he's always acting like a selfless idiot), this time, it pisses him off more than ever.
"That's like saying nobody is!" He hisses. "It's okay to have special people in your life, even though you always want to save everyone! I have someone special too!"
Izuku must know, he has to. Katsuki spent years working to buy that suit for him so they could be pro heroes together.
Ask me about it. Please. Let me tell you how special you are to me.
"I don't know, Kacchan... maybe you're right. But that's not how I see things at the moment."
"I can't take you home tonight," he says, only because he's bitter now. He regrets it almost immediately. "I... have to wake up early to meet with Edgeshot tomorrow."
"It's okay, Kacchan. I can take the bus."
When they're outside the stablishment, Katsuki is already thinking about telling Izuku he was wrong and that he won't have to see Edgeshot until the day after tomorrow, but Izuku is already walking away from him.
"I'll see if I can catch up with Uraraka! I have to tell her something important!"
That's when it hits him again, the sensation that he's losing Izuku.
When Katsuki goes back to his apartment, one that's too big for one person, he collapses on the couch and drinks even more. He tears up a bit, but that's something he won't ever tell anyone.
Katsuki narrows his eyes at the All Might statue that can be seen from the window, and he suddenly has the certainty that Izuku will reject his offer to live together, even though he fucking bought that apartment for him.
***
He finds out three days after that, and even though he was expecting it, it still hurts like fucking hell when Izuku tells him he's dating Uraraka now.
He doesn't know what to say, and frankly, he doesn't trust his voice at the moment, so he nods and drives Izuku to the UA as he usually does.
"Are you okay, Kacchan?"
Apparently he's doing a shitty job at hiding his true feeling because even the most oblivious person alive can tell there's something wrong with him.
Katsuki nods again, looking away from Izuku, as his friend gets out the car.
"You don't look fine, you should take the day off."
"I'm fucking amazing. Shut up."
"O-Okay, Kacchan." Izuku takes a few steps back, but he doesn't smile because he's clearly worried about him.
By noon he realizes the nerd was right after all; he should've taken the day off. He's so distracted he's making the same stupid mistakes an intern makes on their first day at work.
Since he can't risk civilian lives, he decides to go back to his fucking big apartment alone.
He knows Pinky would've told him that the best thing to cure heartbreak is time, that he should walk away, avoid contacting Izuku for a while, maybe go to another place for a few weeks and move on.
But Katsuki is not sure he can do that. He's spent most of his life wanting to be by Izuku's side, and even though in his dream they were more than friends, that doesn't mean he'll walk away just because Izuku doesn't love him the way he does.
But it fucking hurts.
It doesn't get better after a few weeks, but at least Katsuki learns to control his emotions better; he gets to teach a few things to Izuku's students, and see his nerd in action, wearing the suit Katsuki gave him.
When things like that happen, Katsuki almost forgets how painful his heartbeat gets sometimes.
But then Izuku talks about her. And it's not like he hates Round cheeks; she's a great hero and a reliable former classmate, but Katsuki can't help but feel awful every time the nerd mentions her name.
He doesn't hate her, but he really wants something she has.
Even though they don't have been dating for long, Katsuki's worst nightmare turns into an irrational fear and he wonders if it's too early to tell Izuku he doesn't want to go to his fucking wedding; he hasn't said anything about that, but Katsuki wants to make sure Izuku is aware that he doesn't want to go through that.
Whenever they hang out together, Izuku asks for relationship advice, and Katsuki almost laughs at the absurdity of the situation; he's sure Izuku has no idea how much he's hurting him.
He fucking tries to be mature abou it, but sometimes his old self takes control and says things Katsuki has promised to keep inside his head and his stupid broken heart.
"Break up with her."
"Kacchan! We only had a minor argument!"
Katsuki shrugs, like he's not dying to yell at Izuku for not noticing what's in front of him.
"I have no idea what you should do then. Why do you keep asking me? I don't have a clue how relationships work!"
"You haven't dated anyone?"
"No."
"Why not?" Izuku looks confused, and Katsuki wants nothing more than to throw his beer at him, so he stops looking stupidly cute when he's breaking his heart all over again.
Because the love of my life is in love with someone else, that's fucking why!
"Mind your own business."
"Right. Sorry, Kacchan!" Izuku pouts before Katsuki can look away. He feels bad immediately, and allows himself to take the nerd's hand for a moment.
"I just don't want to talk about it, alright?" He says, more kindly.
"It's okay, Kacchan."
***
At first, when he realizes what woke him up is his phone, Katsuki thinks it's something to do with a villain attack, but then he actually sees the screen, and the contact reads: Izuku.
He answers immediately, thinking something happened to him, but after a few seconds he figures out Izuku is fine; he just wants to talk to him.
It must be about Uraraka.
Katsuki is aware that he can tell Izuku it's his day off and he wants to fucking sleep for once, but he also knows that won't happen.
It doesn't matter what Izuku feels, he's still the love of Katsuki's life, and he'll always be there for him.
"Do you want me to pick you up?"
"No, but... can I go to your apartment?"
Katsuki agrees, and he's quickly hiding the picture of Izuku wearing his hero suit that he decided to print and put in a frame.
He makes coffee for himself and tea for the nerd; by the time he arrives there's a cup for him waiting on the counter.
"We decided to end things."
Katsuki is not prepared for the news, and he honestly thinks he's dreaming for a moment, until he notices that Izuku is not crying.
"Why?" He manages to ask, trying not to feel hopeful or let the relief he feels show on his face.
"We realized it was not what we truly wanted," he mumbles, looking down at his cup. "But we're still friends!"
"I'm glad," he doesn't mind to hide the sincerity in his voice. "So you came all the way here to tell me that?"
Izuku shakes his head, smile coming back to his lips; Katsuki missed that smile, he wonders why he hadn't seen it in a long time.
He wants to kiss that smile, but he doesn't move because he's afraid of ruining everything between them.
"I... Being with Uraraka made me realize a lot of things," he says, almost in a whisper, looking flustered. "I've spent so many years teaching and convincing myself that was what I truly wanted, that I started believing it. I just... I think I'm afraid of something else happening and forcing me to quit my dreams again. But I can't let fear stop me from doing something I wanted since I was a child. So, if there's still a place in your agency for me, I'd like to work there... with you."
Katsuki is tempted to pinch himself to make sure he's not dreaming, but instead he pulls Izuku into his arms, and breathes in his green curls.
"It's our agency. It has always been ours."
***
Working with the nerd has its many benefits, but it has a few drawbacks, like the fact that Katsuki can't stop himself from smiling like and idiot every time Izuku is around. His fans online have started to find his behavior suspicious, and there are so many pictures of him looking like a besotted idiot he thanks the forces of the universe that the nerd is not that active on social media.
His friends know what's going on, although he suspects Kirishima knew for a very long time, and they have tried to encourage him to confess. Even Uraraka has talked to him about it (she's dating a very good-looking woman now) and told him it was time to get his head off his ass.
But Katsuki doesn't want to ruin the amazing bond he has with Izuku now, even though he yearns for more.
He's thinking about this as they spend their day off at Katsuki's place, eating pizza and watching a very inaccurate All Might documentary. They like to point out all the things they got wrong about their mentor.
Suddenly, the smile on Izuku's face vanishes and he goes quiet for a moment.
"I want to tell you something important, Kacchan."
Katsuki grimaces immediately, thinking his nerd is about to tell him he's dating someone else.
"I think... I'm in love with you."
The words don't seem real, even though he knows they are, in his dreams, Izuku is always in his arms when he confesses, and in the others, he confesses first with a very intense kiss on the lips.
"I'm sorry. I wanted to tell you. I... hope this doesn't ruin our friendship or makes it difficult to work together. I know you don't feel the same, but-"
"ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?" He doesn't mean to yell, but the fact that Izuku is still oblivious is something Katsuki can't believe.
Izuku visibly recoils from him, and Katsuki feels like an asshole immediately.
"I still want to be your friend, Kacchan! I'm sorry if it made you mad!"
"Idiot," Katsuki says in the most kind, soft voice he's heard himself use to address someone else. It's ridiculous, and yet he knows he's going to be like this for the rest of his life, but he doesn't care. He pulls the nerd into his arms. "How could you not see that I've been in love with you this whole time?"
"Really?"
This time, Katsuki kisses him, and even though it's messy and desperate it feels like coming home after a long journey.
When they're lying on Katsuki's bed, facing each other, Izuku grabs his hand and intertwines their fingers together. Katsuki takes his eyes off a very nice mark he left on his nerd's neck, so he can look directly at him instead.
"Kacchan."
"Yeah?"
"I'm sorry it took me so long to... get home."
"It's alright," Katsuki pulls him into his arms again, feeling Izuku's hearbeat against his chest. "I wasn't going anywhere. I'm not going anywhere. I'll always be here for you."
"I love you too, Kacchan."
Man, I still find it weird when people say Toga, and to a lesser extent most of the rest of the League, is 'self-destructive' like that makes them different from the rest of the cast. I mean Dabi's definitely self-destructive, that's his whole plan, and a case could maybe be made for Tomura; but prior to Ochako accidentally (but romantically) driving her to suicide, how was Toga fighting for her life and to change society no matter who gets in her way, much different from all the heroes putting their life on the line to fight terrorists to the bitter end and bringing along high schoolers for the ride, with regards to her own safety or disregard thereof?
Maybe it's just easy to look past in a shonen manga; but risking your life against at-times unfavourable odds to shape/keep the world the way you want is kind of par for the course for every major character in this series that isn't a civilian.
This also goes for claims the the League is unhealthy for Toga like the pros' treat the hero kids much better. I saw the League's use of her on the front-lines recently compared unfavourably to the heroes use of the UA students based on protections they provide to the students but like; what protections are these that are not granted to Toga? Equipment and support items? can't be that, Toga got those from Giran & later Skeptic. Not to mention Dabi gifting her the safety net of a 30 minute Parade. Adults looking out for her on the field? The League tried to provide that, haven't willingly left her alone since Kamino; but the heroes separated everyone and made Toga fight one-on-way-too-many.
Tumblr media
Toga didn't even want to be here really, the whole reason she wants to change the world is because she wants to stop running for her life; this is also a part of why she donated all her blood to Ochako when she lost. And in this arc in particular, Toga's only in this war facing those bad odds because she got warped in by AFO (and it feels wrong to lump his treatment of her in with how the League treats her for probably obvious reasons). Maybe the League would've still sent her to the front if they had a choice; but then again, her PLF position is in intelligence.
Compare all that to Jirou; who decided, or at least consented after being told to, fight AFO and got a limb mutilated for it. Or Bakugou; who made a similar decision and got his heart blown up fighting a different AFO. Oh but at least he had back-up for that fight, which Deku has decided he doesn't need for Tomura. All of which happened because Class 1A all decided fighting deadly terrorists hand-to-hand was the career they wanted to pursue, the thing they want to do everyday, and the adults in their lives decided they should get a head start on that in their 1st year of high school.
How exactly is Toga more self-destructive than any of those lunatics, especially when she at least wants her personal fights to someday stop sooner than later?
I am absolutely so fucking feral and exhausted from witnessing incredible stories get torn to shreds by their endings.
MHA had a perfect set up for the kids to realize that the hero society is corrupt and for them to end up reforming and changing society and even go as far as to disband heroes altogether.
In the show there are constantly themes surrounding ‘you don’t need to do this to be a hero’ and yet, in the end, after all of the pain and abuse and suffering TLOV went through, displayed in full picture for Shouto, Deku, Bakugou, and more to see, the hero ranking system remains.
What is the point of Touya/Dabi’s character if not a bond for Shouto’s development in realizing the grief hero society causes? Or Toga for Uraraka?
What is the point of giving Izuku a quirkless backstory and revolving the arc of “you don’t need a quirk to be a hero” if not for the message in the end to be “you don’t need to be number one to be a hero”?
Why center so many plots and developments around societal corruption and abuse just for the same said corruption and abuse to win in the end? Touya barely alive, forced to be in the presence of his abuser for all that remains of his insufferable life? Shigaraki dead?
All For One was the villain. The villain that could have united The League and Heroes together and make them realize they are not so different from each other. Because again and again MHA humanizes its villains, and villainizes its heroes so what was the fucking point of it if not to unit the two opposing forces for a common enemy? To defeat the real evil of no redeeming qualities. A man of selfishness, corruption, greed. Not the villains! Not the league who treated each other with fairness and kindness and sought only to reform society and not destroy it!!!
Shigaraki didn’t want to level a city!!! He wanted societal change!!!! Touya wanted accountability!!! Toga wanted acceptance!!!!! They all wanted love!! Not destruction!!! All they knew was fear and violence so it’s no wonder that’s the only way they behaved! And yet somehow, somehow, Shouto, a kid knowing only the same violence and fear is unable to sympathize with them? To say to Deku, ‘hey maybe my brother has a point’.
For victims of abuse this ending is so heart breaking. The League of Villains deserved love.
Something that I can't stop thinking about is a reincarnation au/modern au but with the entire world. It's a normal setting, but remembering your past life is like a part of puberty/early adulthood (because I want them to have a happy childhood) and it could work for any fandom, crossovers, or original stories.
You could have a normal accountant realize that they were a hero with magic powers, or someone remembering they were a famous athlete who died young and treating their new life as a retirement where they use the skills they learned before to become a coach, or maybe their life was more like a sitcom and they go on a journey to find all their old friends. And what about the villains? I want to see a preschool teacher worrying about if their boss will fire them if they find out they were in the mafia. Are there anti-discrimiation laws for equal employment regardless of past life occupations? The world building intrigues me.
I like to imagine a support group at the YMCA for people who used to be supervillains. The main character got separated from their family at a young age in their past life and assume they died young, and the mc believes this too until they remember, but they haven't told their family yet. Turns out, their sibling was a superhero and is volunteering at the YMCA to talk to the former villain support group, and the mc has to try to hide from their sibling. You could make these original characters, or even find a way to combine two worlds together, like those crossovers that make bsd Yokohama part of mha Japan so Chuuya could be the former villain and Uraraka could be the superhero sister.
There could also be a support group for former heroes, and maybe someone disagrees with the way one person handled fighting their villains. So they turn to the person next to them and ask how they handled their enemies, except they just say "decapitation" with a straight face and no context because it's Tomioka Giyuu from demon slayer.
What about couples that don't want to get married again in their second life? How do their children get reincarnated if they were never born, do babies just randomly appear at the hospital from magic? Are their parents/parental figures magically alerted? I want them to have a happy childhood, so somehow children with abusive parents need to be put in someone else's custody, but how would they know? (What if a parental figure was magically alerted to come pick up a baby before they remembered their past life? That would be such a mess 😂)
There are so many ways this world is affected by this. Imagine getting through years of college with multiple PhDs and they don't transfer to a new life so now you have to do it again? What if math and physics are slightly different from your previous world? Are there cultural places like Chinatown for countries that don't exist in this world, where people try to remember their music and recreate dishes with ingredients that don't exist here? How does this affect friendships formed before remembering, if some people lived fantastical, dangerous lives and their friends who lived fairly average lives don't know how to relate to them anymore?
I want to write a million stories for this world, but I honestly have no idea where to even begin.
Bakugou Katsuki: Killer Skills
Fandom: BNHA // MHA — [ Masterlist ]
Summary: 1.2k, angst, fluff
• Being an ex-assassin provides skill, but when your secret is shared it makes things complicated with an explosive pro.
Warnings: Mature language, pro-hero age, mentions of killing.
>>>>——————————>
Tumblr media
Never had you expected to be the catalyst of one night drastically changing form, yet neither had you expected your life to be thrust into the light by explosives either.
Calmly you stood, arms folded and expectant brow raised at said explosive.
"Look I'm not asking for help shadow shit, just a sous chef. I'm getting the extras together and need a hand since they're all still fucking useless in the kitchen."
"Alright, what are we making Katsuki?" Still addressing him so informally left him diverting his gaze but he gave a detailed list of his menu with vicious confidence.
It wasn't until hours later when surrounded by former classmates of UA did you feel minor pressure, even though you were trained to fit into any situation, this was still unnerving despite Bakugou giving a shoddy introduction. So many heroes, so many former enemies...
Did they didn't even know who you were?
What you were?
"Wow Bakugou, you finally found someone who's as good with a knife as you are!" The commentary of a bright brunette ripped you from your depths, the woman bubbly and impressed by the sight of the two of you dicing vegetables.
"Still think it's weird round face?"
"Yeah, how'd you get so skilled (L/n)?" Your blade paused mid strike upon hearing her question, low and regretful reply breathed into the world.
"Having skill with knife is pivotal to an assassin, luckily such a talent can be applied to various situations."
Aside from to Katsuki, you think it's the first truth you've told.
The room fell silent, Uraraka stepping back ever so slightly nearer the comfort of Izuku and beside you there was a prevalently harsh whisper from Bakugou.
"Shit."
That's when you realised you'd screwed up, of course they didn't know, Dynamight probably hadn't a chance to tell them nor the priority to either.
"Assassin? (L/n)-san you...?" The gravity quirk user stuttered out, the heroes in the room suddenly more defensive and dawned upon you one by one.
"Not anymore but my hands aren't clean and they never will be. However I'm trying to be better, now that I'm free. I swear upon my life."
"You are The Shadow, right? I suspected as such after their mysterious prolonged absence." Izuku decided, just as Katsuki predicted he would, but never had you been disappointed by sheer terror and anger tainting once gleaming faces before. Until now.
"I was. Then like you said, I disappeared. I made my first choice in a long time and chose to kill myself so I wouldn't be forced to do anything else I didn't want to." With your harrowing explanation and final assassination poetically being that of your previous alias, the room fell tensely silent once more upon the digestion of such a tale.
"You're responsible for so many d—" They were cut off before they could finish (but you knew where it was going) by the deafening sound of a knife stabbing into your chopping board with knuckles white on its handle. You felt the dangerous presence towering behind you, enough to make anyone think twice about a comment so brash.
"Bakubro why aren't you saying anything?! You should be blowing up right now unless—" A flash of realisation as Kirishima settled upon his friends' protective frame. "—you knew."
"'Course I knew, you think I'm an idiot?!" The blonde aggressively barked back, you felt his riding temperature against your back as he leaned forward slightly.
"No but this is insane! Since when were you one for villain redemption?"
"Like you fuckers can talk about redemption, we've seen plenty of assholes do bad things and sometimes it ain't their choice. You still saved them didn't you?" A knowing look was directed at Deku, who already seemed to emphasise.
"Kacchans' right, we can't assume a situation based on actions. Only that if a lighter path is what (L/n)-san has chosen, then we should support it until given reason otherwise." Miraculously the words of this admired man seemed to resonate with them, yet Katsuki remained somewhat defensive and hadn't revoked himself entirely from your space quite yet.
"Besides, if (Y/n) wanted to kill any of you, you'd be dead already. Take that as a trusting start." He made a point of eating your food, almost as if making an example of his guests' unanimous wariness once stepping back to his station.
"Katsuki! Don't say that, it doesn't help my case."
"What?! It's not a fucking lie, you even gave me a hard time." He bit back defensively, glaring daggers that all most matched the sharpness of yours.
"Someone who made Bakugou sweat? I'd like to take a crack at sparring you sometime if you wouldn't mind." Kirishima seemed revitalised with newfound admiration that was mildly unnerving, maybe this new hero generation hadn't forgiven your crimes but they were willing to get to know you at the very least.
"Uh— I mean I'm trying to be better, if helping you improve accomplishes that then I'll participate." You bowed, Katsuki only snorting and providing a venue proposal.
"Could use my training room? It's been a while since I've seen shitty hair and Pikachu get their asses kicked."
———
So after turning the night upside down, Red Riot and Chargebolt became your opponents in an orchestrated game.
"Alright I have two powders, if you get marked you are dead as per my previous occupation. If you can hit me, you both win." Came your brief explanation, holding up a pair of red fingertips on your left hand which everyone agree and understood.
With that, the onlookers could only watch as you manoeuvred varying attacks, sidestepping, jumping, and swishing past jolts of electric whilst simultaneously avoiding the hardened combat from Eijirou.
Suddenly, after about 3 minutes, you came to a solid stop which allowed Kaminari to barrel into you rather unceremoniously a second later who dizzily voiced his victory.
"I got them!" A panting breath. "I win!"
A chorus of applause and laughter echoed in the room with comments spewing from observations.
"Kiri check your back man!"
"Denki... you've got a little something..." Jirou vaguely gestured to her forehead and lo and behold when mirroring her actions, his fingers came back dusted with scarlet powder.
"Also I should say that the second powder was UV sensitive, so if Katsuki kindly adjusts the lighting?"
Immediately there was gasps of astonishment, both bodies were decorated with reflective vibrant marks that almost made you feel sick of your own competence.
"Woah?! You coulda killed use twenty times over and we didn't even manage to zap you!"
"Told ya morons." Katsuki joined your side, a nudge to your arm to knock you from your worrying thoughts and a diverting suggestion to get you away from the situation. "Let's eat, we didn't go through all that shit to waste the food you damn extras!"
"Sweet, then you can tell us the story of how you both met over dinner!" Despite being beaten, Kaminari had newfound interest in your past life as did the rest of the heroes - you couldn't blame them, you were infamous for a reason.
The domino sound of agreement left you snapping to the host in mild panic upon the possibility of having to relinquish such a turbulent memory. You hadn’t even told him he’s the reason you quit killing and he hadn’t dared bring up that kiss you shared in case it meant nothing to you. A seemingly mutual whisper escaped both of your lips.
"Shit."
Just one thing about the volume leaks, since I'm spoiled anyways (I'm writing this as someone who doesn't ship either bkdk or izch)
I don't get why people are so mad about the Deku "rejecting" Bakugou's offer scene:
- He does thank both Kirishima and Bakugou for the armor and says how happy he is to be able to do that data collection
- He does clarify that he found something important to him in teaching that he would enjoy even if he had OFA
- It's not like he's rejecting Bakugou out of malice or revenge - but in 8 years, he built a life that's important to him and is not throwing it away on Katsuki's whim.
- And obviously, he doesn't OWE it to him. All of Class A financed it together and there were never strings attached (that would be really shitty).
Izuku's character desperately needed this moment; to clarify that he's not just drifting or settling, but he's choosing his own life-path in a way that makes him fulfilled.
I think Bakugou, who has been so angry for so long about Deku never prioritizing himself gets that. Sure, he's bummed a bit that Izuku is not taking his offer, and there is maybe a small sting of rejection over it or just being hit by the irony that now as he's still clinging onto a childhood dream, Deku's goals have adjusted and changed. I don't deny that there is a melancholy to it - Bakugou wasted so many years rejecting Deku, and now he's experiencing a bit of that, though nothing as harsh.
But they are still friends, they still work together, Bakugou even helps out in Izuku's class. And he has a good life - a successful agency (he debuted at no 4! and has countless applications for interns / sidekicks, a new fancy car, etc.), friends he cares about, he keeps up with Edgeshot and generally just him being a better person.
It's not like everyone got what they wanted except Bakugou - it's just everyone else was left in a much worse place in Chapter 430. Deku, Uraraka and Todoroki are still pretty much processing losing "their villains" a decade later.
So if anything, this chapter balanced things out a bit - showing that nobody got 100% of their dreams, but also everyone is in a pretty good place and keeps moving towards their own definition of success and happiness.
Katsuki is just having not a great night - getting that rejection from Deku and having to celebrate Todoroki getting 2nd place in the ranks which will make him a bit pissed off - but it's all amicable - not the bitter frustration of Endeavor. Plus, he's the designated driver, so can't even drink.
But a bad night doesn't mean a bad life. Katsuki seems really doing quite fine and being a hero, friend and human being he can be proud of. At least, I'm super proud of him.
Honestly, this part of the ending feels fitting - changing, being a good person and leaving the past behind is not just one great fight against some evil comic book villain while everyone cheers, but generally doing the right thing, those mundane little acts of service and support, even when it's hard, even when there is no reward - just one day at a time.
Alright, let’s talk.
I’m very happy for Deku that he got to continue his hero journey with his friends after all, and that Uraraka has taken it upon herself to bring focus to mental health.
My heart is so heavy when it comes to Tomura. The last moment where Deku sees his “ghost”… gut wrenching.
You don’t even have to have liked his character to know he didn’t deserve anything that happened to him. He should have been able to live some amount of life that hadn’t been touched by AFO.
However, I guess you could say that his time with the league and the relationships they formed was some sort of freedom from AFO in the end. Tomura had something with the league that AFO never had in his life… Friends.
It’s a fine ending for those who aren’t League of Villains stans 😅
I’m going to miss this story and these characters.
Thank you, Horikoshi.
Oh yeah, and—
Long live the League of Villains.
The funniest thing about Dabi's Dance? The League of Villains' pretty underwhelming reaction.
Think about it for a second: They've been traveling with this guy for the better part of a year, and aside from the occasional outburst of anger, Dabi's a pretty levelheaded, calm guy. He doesn't say much and when he does, it's usually a snarky remark about somebody in the same room. Even up against their enemies, he's pretty cold and calculated. For the most part, he seems bored and socially checked out.
But then they get to Jaku City and the first thing he does is dump a whole bottle of bleach on his head (where was he keeping that?), scream out a completely unhinged speech to his father and brother about how he's been planning his vengeance for years, and then he starts dancing like a drunk person.
All of that is so out of left field and so wildly out of character...but they're only takeaway is the fact he's Endeavor's son.
That is hilarious.
Personally, if the calmest, most collected person I knew in real life suddenly started freaking out like that, I'd be worried about a head injury, drug use, or a nervous breakdown. But hey, maybe they were so distracted by unconscious Shigaraki, unresponsive Machia, and the real possibility they were all about to be caught that they just wrote off what he was doing for the moment.
"The fuck is Dabi doing? Whatever, at least he's upright and breathing."
In that scenario, I feel bad for Spinner.
Toga wasn't there. (Seriously, what did they tell her when she came back and asked what she missed?)
Compress got arrested. (Actually, I'm half-convinced he got arrested on purpose just to get away from Dabi after that incident.)
Shigaraki had just about been taken over by AFO.
Twice was dead.
After the dust settled and he had a chance to process, Spinner had nobody to discuss how insane that all was. He's just there with AFO/Shigaraki with no idea what to think about that development, Toga who's upset over what happened with Uraraka, and Dabi being a shirtless mood in front of a fireplace.
"When did I become the adult?"
