The point of the line is, "You are ruled by people who hate you, and who want to harm you. They have power and you don't. Doesn't that make you mad? Doesn't that make you furious?" It's supposed to hit with a thump and get the blood rising.
Compare, "It's (D)ifferent," which doesn't hit with the same thump.
But if the thump doesn't result in organizing or behaviors which reduce the power of progressives to engage in racial discrimination, wouldn't it be better, tactically or strategically, to use a line which not only generates the emotional impulse, but directs it towards some useful purpose?
Stewing isn't good for mental health. A burst of undirected rage just looks like a Walmart shooter.
In this kind of situation where it's a nasty power struggle, the body of doctrine and flow of information should, yes, motivate the formation's personnel, but also build up their health and capabilities, and channel their rage into eroding the other formation's capabilities - in this case, the ability of progressives to engage in racial discrimination.
Society has a range of different people. Someone is always fuming. A successful marginalization is one that prevents the organization of those fumes into political work.
Is the thump helping, or is it marginalizing?
Chris Rufo, the most effective guy we have, uses...
It's not hypocrisy; it's friend-enemy politics.
In fact, this seems like a good framing, at least for use by people like me. Friend-enemy politics is a horizontal framing, not a vertical framing. It also emphasizes that this is a selfish enterprise on their part (the ideology is formed from the coalition's interests, not independent), not merely a "difference of moral values."
So, now with all that said...
After writing the above, I was immediately going to write a five-phase model of operations, but once I started doing so, I figured that this isn't the appropriate context.
As you know, as an independent actor, I write largely from the perspective of ideological mechanics, and for a relatively broad audience.
For a large organization, it makes sense to use specialization of labor.
If you're just one guy, what can you do? Well, you could pick one phase of activism and stick to it. You could try to do all phases yourself (which would be a second full-time job).
Another option would be to take all five phases of activism and compress them into a single operation. This would result in a loss of information, a loss of alignment, and an increased cost for decompression.
So you go around, like some sort of eastern monk, teaching people to notice the structure of the political fabric around them.
Maybe they will agree with you on all of your favorite issues later, although they probably won't. But if it works (and it won't always work, because not everyone can be taught at the meta level), it's likely to remove the dumbest options from the pool, and the dumbest options are really bad.
One of the ways to view the Rationalist movement is that it functioned as a gathering point and coordinating basis for a large number of a particular kind of person. When SocJus hit in 2014, these people then had access to a network outside of socjus norms.
Which is all just a lead up to...
The argument between you and me on the exact phrasing is, I think, less useful.
For your sector of the right at present, I think a major problem is a lack of institutions. After watching all sorts of institutions that were nominally supposed to be doing something else come out in support of "defund the police" and so on, a lot of right-wingers are concerned that any institution will just get subverted over the long term. Likewise, they're worried that lawfare will be used to destroy any institution.
It is necessary to pay attention to keep organizations on task over the long term (even flashlight manufacturers).
Broadly, there are three ways things could get derailed.
One, the organization bends itself out of shape chasing donations. Political organizations are constantly emotionally terrorizing seniors and other vulnerable people to fund themselves. That gets in the way of the mission. You yourself suggested that gay groups moved into trans rights as a campaigning domain to maintain their funding, but even after primary mission completion, a remaining watchdog organization would still be necessary to monitor the situation to prevent a backslide.
Two, the staff of the organization themselves just change their minds. I don't have much to say about this one, because if all your initial staff all catch TDS, I don't think the org structure can do much about it.
Three, entryists enter the organization and hijack it, and funders don't pull the funding.
An effective but resistant structure could enable a new round of investment, and generate influence - but what would that look like, mechanically?
I can think of a few obvious answers, such as limiting staff to a small number of very talented people, or having the org's charter automatically dissolve after 30 years. Neither of those seem particularly great.
In the case of the flashlights, the manufacturer is kept on-task by the customers, but for politics that's more difficult.
The line, "It's not hypocrisy; it's hierarchy," needs to be deprecated.
It implies the speaker believes that the subject deserves to hold power, rather than that the speaker only intends to obey to the degree to which they are compelled to do so - and has no intention to obey in any context where disobedience is not detectable.

You had never pictured being married this way.
As a child, you envisioned your wedding as a grand affair, a party that nobles and the wealthy would claw tooth and nail to be invited to. Wrapped in the ceremonial garb of your people, you would marry a handsome, kind man, preferably someone you had known before the arranging of your betrothal, and everyone in attendance would be jealous of and happy for you all at once. Maybe your parents would even cry a little, just let a few silent tears fall as they watched you become someone’s wife. And when everything was said and done, you would have a lovely first night in your marital bed with your husband, safe and surrounded by the familiarity of your home planet.
But childish fantasies seldom manifest themselves in the reality of adult life.
When your father had hauled you into the throne room of your childhood home and told you that you were to wed the Supreme Leader of the First Order within the next thirty-six hours, you nearly laughed and asked him to tell you another joke. But Kylo Ren himself was there, seated beside your father with his keen, guarded eyes focused on you, and it took you only a split second to realize that what your father had just stated was no joke. You had known that he was negotiating an alliance with the First Order, but you had no idea that this is the sort of thing he had in mind. A little stormtrooper occupation in major cities, trading goods and services with the Order, or allowing the First Order to control certain aspects of your planet’s politics? Sure, all of that was standard these days. But to give his only child to the Supreme Leader himself, a man that was only known to the lot of you by name and reputation? Had he gone mad?
Apparently, though, it wasn’t madness that had driven your father to cast you away- it was greed.
Later, you would learn that your father had been intending to sell you off for some time. Of course, you had always known that your marriage would be arranged, but your father had intended to go past even the idea of that. He had intended to send you far, far way, to some man somewhere who would give him and your planet money and political clout. He’d even admitted himself that he never thought Kylo Ren would be the one to take you off of his hands (and yes, those were his exact word, and yes, they did make you feel like you’d been punched in the mouth when you heard them), but hey, why not? Why shoot for some sort of large, mineral-rich planet when you can install your daughter right at the very top of the First Order instead? And he had seemed so pleased with himself when he told you all of this, like you should have been honored to be reduced to nothing but a bargaining chip.
The whole thing was an utter betrayal, and it took you two days to stop crying. And by that time, the moment had come for you to board the Order’s ship and say goodbye to the only home you had ever known.
Your real wedding, the one that happened just hours ago, was nothing like your childhood visions. Instead of wearing the standard marriage garments of your people, you married in a plain, shapeless dress. A black dress, a dress the color of death and funeral rites where you come from. You had tried to style your hair in line with the customs of your home planet, but to no avail- you had never done your own hair before, a fact you had realized with great humility as you made yourself ready to be married earlier today. In hindsight, it was probably best that you found yourself inept, because the ceremony took place in a bare, white room. Had you actually managed to craft a special hairstyle for yourself, you would have looked absolutely ridiculous against the sterile background.
Not one person in the audience knew who you were, not really, and you certainly did not know any of them. Most of them were men, and they all looked the same: fit, clean-shaven, dressed in a few variations of the same sort of dark uniform. Even the man who married you looked like he had been copied and pasted into the scene, a virtual perfect replica of no less than three of the men observing your union. What hurt you most, though, was that not even your parents came to watch you be wed. You aren’t sure if this was their choice or someone else’s, but would either option make their absence hurt any less?
There was no music at your short reception, no dancing. Just men and women milling about with glasses of wine in their hands, drinking in moderation and talking in low voices. Their sameness was maddening to you, and it made learning people’s names confusing. If you hadn’t been so overwhelmed with the introductions that were being made to you during that period of time, you may very well have burst into tears on the spot.
But how could you when you were in the company of the Supreme Leader himself? Truthfully, Kylo Ren’s behavior throughout the wedding and the reception had been the most unnerving aspect of the whole ordeal. During the exchanging of the vows, he spoke with an even keel and an expression that bordered on complete indifference. The reception was no better, and while you were by your new husband’s side for most of the party, he scarcely spoke five words to you, only muttering quick little phrases here and there. There was a point in the night where you began to wonder if the Supreme Leader had even looked at you once in the last two hours, and it made something in your stomach turn when you realized that he hadn’t.
Did you want Kylo Ren practically molesting you in front of his generals and everybody? Absolutely not, nor did you want him wooing you dramatically, or being flat out mean. But you at least wanted him to acknowledge you. You didn’t think you could survive it, being married to a man who acts like you aren’t even there half the time. What’s more, you need Kylo Ren to take interest in you, any interest at all. You know good and well that a man as powerful as him can be rid of anyone at any time, and if he ever truly grew tired of you…
You shuddered at the thought.

A droid leads you down a hallway silently, moving aside so that you may stand in front of a rather non-descript black door.
“These are the Supreme Leader’s quarters,” the droid says helpfully, gesturing to the door with a stiff, metallic arm. “They are now your quarters as well.”
With this new information heavy in your mind, you give the door and the walls around it a cursory glance, trying to find an entry mechanism. The blast door has no handles, of course, and you only see a small keypad off to the right of the jamb.
You turn to the droid. “What’s the-?”
“For you and the Supreme Leader, no access code is necessary,” the droid explains, cutting you off. “You simply approach the door as if you mean to walk through it, and a small camera scans your face. The door should open without issue!”
Seemingly pleased with itself for being so helpful, the droid gestures once more, urging you to follow his instructions. Sure enough, the blast door slides open without a hitch as you approach it, and you take a tentative step into the room. Halfway in, you turn back to the droid, one hand gripping the doorframe.
“Thank you,” you say quietly, pulse pounding now at the prospect of retiring to your marital bed.
“You’re quiet welcome, Empress!” And with that, the droid rolls away quietly, leaving you alone.
A few small steps, and you’re standing in the Supreme Leader’s… your quarters. Everything is very sleek, all dark colors and simple lines. Black is the predominant color in the room- black furniture, black countertops, black sheets on the bed. There is a large pane of transperisteel along one wall and another blast door on the wall across from that— the entrance to the ‘fresher, you’re sure.
The quarters are large, of course, but more modestly decorated than you had imagined. It seems that Kylo Ren is not a man of extravagance, though his station in the Order would suggest otherwise. Really, the rooms are very practical: a living area with some seating, a small dining table, a desk, and a few end tables here and there, and a bedroom with a bed, two nightstands, and some storage. Not at all what you had been expecting.
Thinking of the Supreme Leader makes you realize how grateful you are that he isn’t here in this moment. The two of you had been separated at the party when the droid had come to retrieve you, though you think that Kylo Ren himself may have asked that you be taken here. Whatever his reasoning is for that, you’re glad that you’ll have a moment to yourself before you have to be alone with him for the first time.
Earlier in the day, you had been informed that your belongings had been moved to your new living space, and you wonder now where they were. Everything in the room is very orderly, so they must have been put away for you. Sleeping in your evening gown won’t do, no matter how plain it is, so you need to find something to change into.
Unsure of yourself, you walk to a set of long dressers sitting against a sort of dividing wall between the living room area and the bedroom portion of the quarters, tentatively opening the drawers as you search for your things. It feels strange, not knowing where your own clothes are, and you feel like a thief snooping through someone else’s belongings as you open drawers full of thick shirts and pants that most definitely are not yours.
Finally, mercifully, you find that one of the dressers is entirely full of the things you brought with you from home, plus some other clothes that must have been provided for you by the Order. Day wear, a few nicer dresses like the one you currently have on, nightgowns— all sewn in blacks and reds, some embroidered with a little decoration here and there, some not. You’re desperate to put on one of your nightgowns from home, yearning for something familiar, but you wouldn’t want the Supreme Leader to think you rude or disrespectful for not wearing one of these gifts. Even if he has no knowledge of them, you figure it’s better to be safe than sorry. Besides, you’re his wife now, a member of the Order— the Empress, apparently. Maybe it would be best to dress like it for now.
You change in the ‘fresher, fearful to strip in the open parts of the quarters. The Supreme Leader could be back any minute, and you don’t want to start off by having him catch you naked. Thankfully, your new nightgown is soft and finely made, and warm, too. You look pretty in it, you think, but it isn’t revealing.
Coming out of the ‘fresher, you almost drop your dress with a start. You husband is standing in front of the bed, and he peers at you almost nervously when he sees you emerge.
The scare makes you forget how jittery you are for a moment. “I didn’t even hear you come in,” you say, taking a breath to calm yourself. Kylo Ren just keep looking at you, hands fidgeting just the slightest bit at his sides.
“I apologize for startling you,” he states evenly, and you will yourself to be warm and gracious.
“That’s all right, I should have been expecting you.” You smile at your husband and try to not appear nervous as you walk to the dressers. His eyes never leave you, not even when your back is turned.
“Thank you for my clothes,” you say, trying to fill up the silence when you realize that he isn’t going to initiate conversation.
“You’re welcome,” Kylo replies curtly, and you feel yourself becoming more anxious, even agitated by his lack of openness. Is he really just going to stare at you and let his fingers twitch all night?
But just as you begin to have another unkind thought, you force yourself to remember that he can read minds, that he can see what’s in your head if he wants to. You must be patient and sweet with this man, even if you’re scared.
“Is it late?” you ask, and it’s a genuine question. This ship is not like a planet, it has no suns or moons, and you’re having trouble keeping track of the time. Earlier, there was talk of the ship shifting into “night mode,” but you still don’t know what that means exactly.
“It’s nearly the twenty-third hour,” is all you get in reply from the Supreme Leader, and you nod. With your dress put away now, you’re out of idle tasks to perform. You brushed your teeth and combed your hair while Kylo wasn’t in the room, and of course, you’ve already changed for bed.
So that would be the last thing to do, then— go to bed with your husband.
You pad across the floor quietly, nearer to the Supreme Leader, and clasp your hands in front of you. “Is there a side you would prefer?” you ask, pulse thrumming in your ears. Kylo Ren stares at your for a moment, almost as if he doesn’t know what you mean, but then things must click in his mind.
“N-No,” he stammers, “please.” He glances towards the bed and you walk around to one side of it, pulling back the covers. You force yourself not to look at your husband on purpose, laser-focused on the individual threads in the comforter as you move to get into bed. Kylo sits on the opposite side, bent at the waist, presumably taking his boots off. You lay down and pull the covers over you, listening as Kylo begins puttering around the room, opening drawers, rustling clothes, ducking into the ‘fresher, no doubt changing just as you did.
Lying there, waiting for your husband to come to bed, you can’t help but marvel at how strange all of this is. Kylo is nothing like you thought he would be. The arrogance, the bravado, the flashy personality that you would expect from a high-powered official— none of it’s there in him. He seems nervous to be alone with you, though he was holding his own during the reception. You aren’t even sure he’s been alone with a woman before, not with the way that he’s acting now, and it mystifies you. Being as powerful as he is, you’d think a man like Kylo Ren would have a voracious appetite for women. Shit, every man with a little bit of power you’d ever known was that way. But instead, he’s acting like one of the skittish teenagers that first took you to bed a few years ago, maybe even more awkward than that.
But even though he’s acting like he isn’t interested in you, you still chant please be gentle, please be gentle over and over again in your mind, knowing that he can hear you if he wants to. You just hope he listens.
On the other side of the bed, Kylo shifts, rolling over to face you, and you know then that he’s read your thoughts. The room is dim when you open your eyes, almost completely dark, and you move to roll over as well. The bed is massive, putting you far away from one another on either side.
Even in the dimness of the room, you can see your husband looking at you. You wait for him to move, for him to pull you towards him, but he doesn’t. He just keeps staring and staring, and you decide then that he isn’t an unattractive man, not at all. Under different circumstances, you may have taken an interest in him on your home planet— may have let him take you to bed, even.
So, even though you thought you wouldn’t, you move towards Kylo Ren quietly, still under the covers, still lying down. When you’re not quite next to him, you stop, reaching out your hand to cup his cheek, figuring that this will be enough for him if he’s waiting for your approval. But there’s no softening of his face, no response. He just keeps looking at you as you stroke your thumb over his cheek, doesn’t move to touch or kiss you like you thought he would.
And then he rolls back over without a word, leaving you with your hand lying pathetically on his pillow.
You hadn’t expected being rejected by your husband to sting the way that it does. Truth be told, just a couple of hours ago, you were hoping that something like this would happen, hoping that Kylo would just leave you be and go to sleep. But now that he is, you can’t help but worry that you’ve offended him, turned him off somehow. You had always been told that marriages had to be consummated on the first night, and you were sure that a man of Kylo’s position knew this as well.
Is it a bad sign that he isn’t following this custom, or is he just holding back because the two of you are virtual strangers?
Back on your side of the bed, you face away from Kylo, heart pounding as you try to replay everything that’s happened since you arrived. You can’t pinpoint a moment where you fucked up, don’t see where you went wrong, but maybe you did. Wouldn’t it be just you luck, ruining your marriage in a couple of hours flat?
In the darkness, like a scared child, you cry as silently as you can, throat burning as you think of your home planet, of the friends you left behind, of your bedroom. How desperately you want to be there, how desperately you want to wake up and have all of this be a bad dream. But you know better than that, so you close your eyes and try to sleep.

I’ve quoted a lot from this book, it’s one I think is really worth reading as it has a lot of overviews of Star Wars through the lens of psychology and this interpretation of Anakin is one I thought was really interesting, as someone driven by fear rather than by evil. That it doesn’t excuse that his actions are evil, nor excuse that he could have applied the mindfulness teachings he was given and didn’t, but that he’s far more complicated in what actually drives him, all that scared little boy that he could never move past, not with Sidious there sabotaging every step of the way. Anakin is still responsible for Anakin’s choices, but it’s so, so much more complicated than that!
The most common answer to my question is, “Darth Vader is evil and the Jedi are good.” But I argue the point that Darth Vader really isn’t evil. His actions are clearly bad and should be characterized as evil, but those actions are motivated by something else. He is driven by a magnified emotion we all experience to one degree or another. Darth Vader is motivated by anxiety. Therefore, the correct answer to my question about the difference between the Jedi and Vader is where they place their sense of control. Vader attempts to control everything external to him, whereas the Jedi strive to demonstrate self-control and allow for free will.

More failures ensue, and Anakin focuses on them, building further on his increasing lack of control. Instead of looking inward, focusing on his emotions, and being mindful of the moment and his purpose, he externalizes and emotionally reacts with little thought to his underlying fears and anxiety. Over and over he runs into variables he cannot control, and this plants more seeds of anxiety, doubt, and fear.

Viewing Star Wars for the first time was and is for many people a life-changing experience. Princess Leia’s ship comes into view with Tatooine in the distance as Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer closes in. This opening sequence is the iconic memory from Lucas’s classic film that we all share. Despite the power of the opening scene, the image that held me captive as an eight-year-old seeing Star Wars for the first time was the moment when Darth Vader steps through the smoking air lock his troopers blasted open. With his black cape flowing about him, Vader stands to survey the damage in the smoke-filled corridor. Without a word, his mere presence bleeds ultimate power and fear. The only sound we hear is his slow, deep breathing. I knew I liked Vader. Throughout the next 40+ years of viewing the Star Wars films, I knew Vader was similar to me, but I was unclear initially how that could be. He didn’t feel like a villain to be feared and at times seemed almost aspirational in his goal of galactic stability and peace. As the films progressed, he became more and more human. As a little boy, I couldn’t understand what I was sensing about Vader. As my dad and I left the theater that night in May 1977, he held my hand. Squeezing it, he looked down at me and said, “You know, that Darth Vader was pretty cool.” I looked into his eyes and agreed. Vader was cool. The 54 Darth Vader toys and figures inhabiting my office are a testament to that coolness. But how could a murdering, planet-destroying, princess-torturing (his daughter, I might add) machine of a man be cool? Cool is probably not the right word, but more important, I don’t believe Darth Vader was evil. Darth Vader wasn’t a bad guy. He was just very scared.
This Present Unconscious Menace Living under Imperial rule has to be stressful. Freedoms are being undermined, the Senate is dissolved, the existential threat of the Death Star is unleashed, and the knowledge that all the Jedi have been killed or expelled offers little to no hope. The tiny rebellion has little chance against the Imperial Starfleet or the regional governors who hold planets captive on the basis of fear. Other threats are ever present from the Hutts, bounty hunters, slavery, and bribery. Stress is omnipresent under the Empire. As Ben Kenobi tells Luke, there had been a sense of safety and hope when the Jedi were considered “the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic, before the dark times … before the Empire.” In the present day, we may not be living under an empire, but we could be living under another, more sinister menace that is walking among us every day. In my private practice as a psychologist, I see a lot of scared kids and parents. More accurately, I serve the needs of a lot of anxious people. As a society, we are working harder in our jobs now than at any other time in history. Levels of anxiety are the highest ever reported. Individuals are reporting 40 percent more stress, worry, and panic now than they did in the 1950s. With parents under such intensive pressure and stress, the lives of children are similarly under mounting pressure. Living in such conditions on an ongoing basis raises levels of anxiety to pathological levels. Our innate fight-flight-freeze responses tend to engage in situations in which these responses are not needed. When we lived in caves and jungles, fight-or-flight responses served us well and kept us alive. However, exaggerated or uncontrolled responses to anxiety can have dire consequences in those who have limited awareness of how fear can affect them personally in regard to anger outbursts and rash decision-making. In Star Wars, the Sith are well versed in anger as this emotion is what they use to channel the Force. A deeper human emotion fuels the anger of the Sith. Emotions need to be addressed because without such attention, the dark side awaits. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an approach to psychological treatment that alters thinking patterns and/or behaviors that cause problems in people’s lives. CBT is used in an attempt to reduce anxiety-based negative thoughts and behaviors that interfere with successful living. CBT is the state-of-the-art tool for anxiety reduction. Anxiety can be paralyzing. It can make you feel that you are under an existential threat, but CBT can help. Before beginning CBT sessions, my most frequently used tool is an introduction to the true nature of Darth Vader. As he is one of the best-known characters in cinematic history, the majority of my clients, even little five-year-olds, have a good understanding of his story. My first session with anxious and fearful kids begins with a foundational question: “There is only one difference between the Jedi and Darth Vader. What is it?” The most common answer to my question is, “Darth Vader is evil and the Jedi are good.” But I argue the point that Darth Vader really isn’t evil. His actions are clearly bad and should be characterized as evil, but those actions are motivated by something else. He is driven by a magnified emotion we all experience to one degree or another. Darth Vader is motivated by anxiety. Therefore, the correct answer to my question about the difference between the Jedi and Vader is where they place their sense of control. Vader attempts to control everything external to him, whereas the Jedi strive to demonstrate self-control and allow for free will. Darth Vader wants peace and justice throughout the galaxy. He aspires to an admirable goal for sure. Vader so much desires and believes in a peaceful galactic future that he implores his son to join him on his quest and to destroy the Emperor. Vader actually wants the same goal as the Jedi, but he pursues that goal in a manner that leads him down a frustrating, failure-ridden, and dark path. Vader’s Childhood: Tell Me About Your Mother … Experiencing so many early life stressors must be very hard on young Anakin. His time on Tatooine probably reinforces within him a deep-seated sense that he is controlled by life circumstances. His ultimate unconscious conclusion could be that he has little control over his own destiny, and this may reinforce his desire to seek control of his own destiny. Control of future events drives him. In its response to being controlled by so many factors, Anakin’s nature is to attempt to control as much as possible, even things far outside his ability to control. When under stress, people tend to seek ways of gaining control, sometimes even using magical thinking. Before he leaves his mother to train as a Jedi, we get a clear glimpse into Anakin’s heart as he says, “I will come back and free you … I promise.” Although the sentiment is beautiful, we are able to see the pressure this 10-year-old child places on himself. No child should feel that he is responsible for saving his parent. Perfectionism has been described as a kind of neurosis that pushes someone to achieve severe and exacting goals. A subtype of perfectionism in children has been identified as “pervasive perfectionism.” Such individuals are very well organized and tend to set incredibly high personal standards. However, these individuals often react strongly and very negatively to mistakes in a way that results in anger outbursts or meltdowns. Pervasively perfectionistic children tend to have parents who have high expectations of them or are often very critical (think about the Emperor as Anakin’s father figure with unreasonably high expectations). Having such a perfectionist manner of thinking leaves a person with unavoidable failure as nobody can be perfect, not even one who expected to bring balance to the Force. Having repeated experiences of failure plus never feeling a sense of perfect completion can leave one feeling defeated, shameful, and guilty. Individuals who tend toward perfection often develop a dichotomous way of thinking that is very moralistic. Anakin, as he turns to the dark side, surmises his dichotomous manner of thinking by stating, “If you’re not with me, then you are my enemy.” Obi-Wan responds to the Sith way of thinking by stating, “Only a Sith deals in absolutes.” The Story of Anxiety and Fear in Vader’s Life Anxiety is a powerful force, one required for survival. Anxiety is a more modern term for a base emotion we know as fear. Fear affects all the parts of our brains but especially the limbic system and a little area called the amygdala. When researchers electrically stimulate the amygdala, individuals can immediately experience a fear response and demonstrate all the symptoms of fear, including sweating and a rapid heart rate. Human beings need this fear response especially when living in caves with lions, tigers, and bears as their adversaries. With the fear response, heart rate goes up, breathing quickens, and blood flow moves to the extremities, placing us in a ready state to fight or run. This state is often called fight or flight. In the physical body’s effort to survive, it will attempt to control the external environment in any way possible even if that requires jumping out of the way of a car, fighting off a perceived attack, or jumping onto a robot that hovers over lava. In an increasingly stress-filled world, people’s bodies often invoke the fight-or-flight response as the biological self perceives an existential threat despite the absence of such a threat. Examples of this can include public speaking and taking a test, which for some people can result in sheer panic. An underlying propensity for anxiety or a perfectionistic style can fuel the fight-or-flight response and makes us believe in the little “brain lies” that can cause us to think we must control variables that are far beyond our control. Stressed brains seek control over stressors, real or imagined. Fear and the need to control external events repeatedly arise in Anakin’s personality. He fears for his mother and feels the need to return to Tatooine to free her. He also fears the loss and potential death of Padmé, the woman he loves, after a blaster hit causes her to fall from a Republic gunship during the chase for Count Dooku. Ben Kenobi embarrassingly challenges and reprimands Anakin so that his Padawan will remain focused on the mission. Anger and frustration are clearly evident in Anakin’s face. His heart is with Padmé and cannot be in two places at once. In this moment, he loses sight of the mission because of his fear for Padmé’s safety. A true Jedi would release his fear and not allow emotions to cloud his judgment. A similar display manifests during the Jedi rescue mission against General Grievous’s ship. As Ben and Anakin are trying to rescue the Chancellor, Anakin wants to break off the attack to help save the clone pilots who were being slaughtered behind him. At every turn, Anakin demonstrates his core of fear and unreasonable goal setting. He repeatedly experiences the pull to save others to prevent bad things from happening. Ultimately, the variables that he strives to control grow into the most unreasonable and unattainable goal of all: the establishment of peace and order throughout the galaxy. As Anakin attempts to control seen, unforeseen, and imagined tragic life and galactic events, he experiences failure time and time again. Anakin fits the model of the “pervasive perfectionist.” He increasingly responds with anger and ultimately rage. He perceives himself as having failed his mother by not saving her from the Sand People. Imagine the personal sense of failure when she dies in his arms. His response to this perceived self-imposed failure is to react with rage in an attempt to seek moralistic justice by killing an entire village of Sand People, including women and children. More failures ensue, and Anakin focuses on them, building further on his increasing lack of control. Instead of looking inward, focusing on his emotions, and being mindful of the moment and his purpose, he externalizes and emotionally reacts with little thought to his underlying fears and anxiety. Over and over he runs into variables he cannot control, and this plants more seeds of anxiety, doubt, and fear. Hope of Redemption I grew up in an abusive household where I would be physically attacked for even minor infractions. For a child struggling to see the best in people, finding coping mechanisms in the midst of this upbringing was incredibly difficult. Seeing Return of the Jedi seems to be the only thing that got me through my childhood. Star Wars became a coping mechanism and gave me hope that things could be better. The familial relationship between Luke and Vader is the most tortured I could imagine, but Luke never gave up hope that there was good within his father. The moment Vader comes back to the light and saves his son was always a teary-eyed catharsis for me. If Vader could come back from such ugliness, maybe my dad could, too. It took me years to decode why Return of the Jedi was my favorite part of the saga, but once I connected the dots, it made sense. I just wish I would have had someone there to point it out to me sooner. That’s why I tell this story often, to show that Star Wars helps. And for the little boy I used to be, it was the only help I had. The culmination of his anger that is based on fear and doubt is a physical assault against his wife. As Anakin’s fear increases, his anxiety escalates, resulting in an intensification of his desire for external control. This never-ending cycle is what leads him down the path to the dark side. Vader on the Psychoanalytic Couch Our emotions are complicated. Sometimes we don’t even have the words to express accurately the way we are feeling. This lack of emotional language can be very hard for kids, particularly for boys. An example of confusing emotions would be when someone is both angry and sad. It would be hard to come up with words to explain the emotion other than “sangry.” Even adults can emotionally revert to this childlike feeling. The best visual of such an emotion is when Luke responds to the knowledge that Darth Vader is truly his father. We see and hear shock, anger, sadness, and fear all at once expressed in Luke’s face and his tortured scream. One model of understanding complicated and even competing emotions is to think about our emotions in four boxes: (1) mad, (2) sad, (3) worry, and (4) happy. When mad, we are typically being blocked by something that has been placed in our way. Anakin is mad that he is refused permission to sit on the Jedi Council. The Jedi have blocked his way. But worry is why Anakin ultimately becomes Darth Vader. Worry is seated in a person’s desire to control the unknown. People are unable to control the past or the future, but those who remain firmly rooted in the present can manage their circumstances more effectively. Yoda and many other Jedi stay rooted in the present. Yoda once tells Luke, “Difficult to see. Always in motion the future.” I like to rewrite the quote as “Difficult to see. Always emotion the future.” Darth Vader’s emotions cloud his judgment, and this focuses his mind and heart on the future and the past, not on the present. Anakin was not mindful of the present as Sidious gained greater control over him through lies and deceit. If Anakin had been more aware of his complicated emotions and the way fear ruled his life, he might have become more aware of the dire circumstances that held him within the grip of the dark side. Being mindful of the present may have resulted in the destruction of Sidious rather than the destruction of Vader’s own life by his own turning to the dark side. With You Always Star Wars is just a movie series, not a real story, but we can still dream it all happened. Although the films have a nice, tidy ending as Anakin returns to the fold and dies in his son’s arms, we are left with a complicated picture of a little gifted boy who turned to the dark side. The character of Darth Vader has fascinated us and will continue to fascinate us for generations to come. It is all too easy to cast a blanket commentary on Darth Vader by calling him out as bad or even evil. We similarly can name the white-dressed princess as good and pure. Such simplistic and dichotomous thinking can cause us to miss the great emotional depth of the characters in Star Wars. These characters are complicated, real, and relevant to our lives. Good people can be bad. Bad people can be mean but also have great aspirations. Darth Vader does a lot of bad stuff because he is scared. And he’s really cool, too! Thanks, Dad.

Motivation and Seduction: “You don’t desire it enough”
We know that the human brain’s reward systems highly values experiences/behaviors that lead to pleasurable consequences. Our instinct is to move towards those behaviors that produce the greatest reward and withhold from acts resulting in punishment or no reinforcement (extinction).
Every single one of the behavior patterns you currently have in your behavioral repertoire (both the positive and negative behaviors) is associated with higher dopamine levels (pleasurable consequences: Reinforcement).
Scientists can now measure with great precision the exact moment that a desire/need occurs by measuring dopamine levels in the brain. The higher the spike of dopamine, the greater the desire/need. The greater the desire for something, the more likely it is that behavior will follow.
But why is it that sometimes even though there is a pleasurable reward waiting for us, we still do not have the motivation or willingness to engage in the behavior to produce the reward?
The short answer is that “You don’t Need it enough”. It isn’t enough to like something; you must also desire it!
There is a significant distinction between liking something and desiring it. The human brain has far more neurocircuitry allocated for desiring pleasure than it does for liking them. The desiring centers in the brain are vast, but the liking centers of the brain are significantly smaller. When we engage in a behavior willingly, 90% of the desiring centers of the brain light up, but only 10% are activated in the liking centers. The fact that the brain allocates so much space to the regions responsible for desiring/needing/craving, provides further evidence of the crucial role that these processes play. Desire is the engine that drives behavior. Every action is taken because of the anticipation and desire that precedes it.
Example:
Even though Emmanuel likes green tea, he doesn’t go out of his way to get it. He does not desire/need green tea. Because of this lack of desire, he does not engage in green tea-seeking behavior.
Carmen likes Eric but does not make much effort to see him. She does not desire Eric enough to put in the required amount of effort. Her lack of desire leads to her lack of effort.
Bob has not had a job in years. Even though he would like to become independent and move out of his parent’s basement, he does not desire/need this independence. Because of this lack of desire, he does not engage in behaviors that could produce the said outcome (independence).
Why do our Needs/desires fluctuate so much?
We have discussed the significant role that present Needs/desires play in the Behavior we choose to engage/not engage in. We know that our internal needs and desires are the driving force behind Behaviors we engage in; however, the question remains, what dictates these internal needs, and why are they constantly changing? For example, why isn’t a loved one’s phone call always desirable?
Or why is it that we only sometimes feel an intense desire to do something and, as a result, feel a burst of energy (dopamine) as we move towards an anticipated outcome? But why does that not last? For many, their Behaviors depend on such “random” bursts of energy and motivation that seem to appear spontaneously and by chance.
From a Behavioral Analytic perspective, individuals’ state of Needs & desires depends solely on their past experiences with the reinforcer (reward). If the outcome/reinforcer has been too available, the internal Need for that reinforcer will be reduced. Consequently, if a need for a particular reinforcer has been reduced, the Behaviors that can produce that reinforcer will also be diminished.
Let’ break this down:
Yesterday
Need: Talk to a certain friend you have not talked with in a while (EO)
Antecedent: Friend calls
Behavior: Pick up the phone instantly with excitement
Consequence: have a pleasant 2 hour conversation (AO: desire satisfied)
Today
Need: desire alone time
Antecedent: the same friend calls
Behavior: Avoid picking up the phone
Consequence: Enjoy time alone reading a book
As you can see in the example above, the avoidance of the phone call was tied directly to the consequence you received in the past, which reduced the value of that reinforcer (friend’s phone call). The availability of the reinforcer you received changed your need to be in touch with that friend the next day. This resulted in you not engaging in Behaviors that would produce the same outcome (AO). Even though this sudden shift in your current Needs changed the course of your Behavior, it is most likely a temporary change, meaning if another few days or weeks go by without you speaking to this person, the value of their calls will be increased once more (EO). Realize that the longer the time since speaking with this friend, the greater the value of their voice.
To describe this in an accurate Behavioral term, we would not measure your desire as it is a poor self-report measure. Instead, we could measure the amount of time that has passed since the last conversation in a very quantifiable and reliable manner.
When you desire or want to speak with a particular friend, this desire exists in the absence of that event; that is, you are not currently in touch with them. Also, there has been a certain amount of time where you have not spoken with the person. In other words, a state of deprivation exists. Suppose this deprivation is sufficient to motivate you to engage in Behavior that has historically produced a conversation with them. In that case, we could conclude that the value of the call has been“established.”
Example:
Dayton has been trying out a new 1 meal a day diet as recommended by his doctor. This means for an entire day he will not consume anything except for water. At 8:00 pm, he can indulge in up to 2000 calories. At 7:45pm, Dayton’s desire for food is at its peak because he has been deprived for several hours (Establishing Operations EO). However, by 9:00, when he has eaten a 3 course meal, he is fully satisfied, and the value of food as a reinforcer drops significantly (Abolishing Operations AO). In other words, because he no longer desires to eat, Behaviors that produce such an outcome (I.e., going to the fridge to get food) will be reduced.
What causes this shift in how much we desire something at any given moment has to do with how much or how long we have been deprived of something. We call this Establishing Operation (EO): when the value of a particular reinforcer increases because we have been deprived of it for a period of time.
On the other hand, the operation behind what causes us to avoid certain Behaviors can be explained by Abolishing Operations (AO): A motivating operation that decreases the value of a particular reinforcer often as a result of satiation. In the case of Dayton, because he had consumed plenty of food (AO), the value of food as a reinforcer decreased.
Example:
During the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, you may have experienced intense longing for loved ones whom you could not visit in person. Being deprived of social contact (Establishing Operation (EO)) increased the value of seeing your loved ones (reinforcer). For many of you, this increased the likelihood of you engaging in Behaviors that would get you a little closer to them: such as seeing them on zoom, or secretly inviting them over.
Prior to the pandemic, perhaps you did not engage in such Behaviors as frequently because you were not in a state of deprivation, and thus the value of loved ones as a reinforcer was not as high as the lockdown condition.
Thus, when we do (not) engage in certain behaviors, AO is often a key contributing factor: this means that we are satiated (satisfied), dopamine levels have dropped, desire/need has decreased, and therefore the probability of engagement in the target behavior will also significantly decrease.
But when we (do) engage in certain behaviors, EO is at play. This means that we are seduced by an environmental condition that has deprived us of a particular reward. This deprived state creates anticipation (and a spike in dopamine levels) which leads to greater desire/need. As a result, the probability of engagement in the target behavior will increase.

What is the scope of Digital marketing in India After the COVID-19 Pandemic?
It is safe to say 2020-21 was an exceptional year and 2022 will not be the same. What can marketers learn from this pandemic when they think about building brands in 2020-21 and beyond? What can we do for companies to grow faster? What is the future of marketing in this age of Covid-19 and how can it be redefined?

These questions are critical for marketing success over the coming months and years. In the past few months, I have been comparing what my 20-year career in marketing and media has taught me with what we all learned in this one year of massive change. Particularly, I identified 10 ways that the pandemic challenged fundamental truths about marketing and provided us with a new set of rules for moving forward.
1. An old truth: Marketing starts with understanding your customer.
A new truth: Marketing starts with understanding your customer segments.
We know that brands need to communicate with specific consumers in localized and precise terms. This is based on the consumer's circumstances and what is most important to them. This means understanding the local situation, country by country, in every state and zip code. It may also mean tailoring communications store to store for some businesses like banks, restaurants, or retailers.
Marketing messages must be relevant to the individual, not just geography. To create a human connection in commercial messages, it is necessary to define consumer segments. These are people who can be described according to multiple dimensions that affect their buying behavior.
Five waves of research were conducted by EY Future Consumer Index with more than 14,500 people in 20 countries. The index has identified five distinct cohorts of consumers.
The affordability of housing is the first priority (32% of consumers). Living within their means and spending less on brands, and focusing more on product functionality.
Health first(25%)They need to protect their health and the health of their families by choosing safe products and minimizing risk when they shop.
The Planet First (16%)They will try to reduce their environmental impact and buy brands that reflect their beliefs.
Society first (15%) Buys from transparent and honest organizations to work together for the greater good.
Try it first (12%)To make the most out of life, live in the moment. This opens them up to new brands, products, and experiences.
Using customer segmentation and personas to gain deeper insight into media strategies and creative marketing methods can be very useful. These insights can also be used to help you understand the customer journey.
2. An old truth: You compete with your competition.
A new truth: Your customer's last great experience is your competition.
Before Covid-19, consumer expectations were on the rise. Generation Z was raised with technology integrated seamlessly into their daily lives. Because they are adept at our personal data, direct-to-consumer businesses (like Parachute or Glossier) had already taught us to expect hyper-personalization.
Digital transformation was accelerated by the coronavirus. Consumer expectations of digital transformation soared as a result. Customer expectations go beyond seamless digital transactions. This is what Carla Hassan (City's chief marketing officer), explained earlier this summer to me. Companies now have access to their customers' personal data and want personalized, anticipatory experiences throughout the customer journey.
To meet customers' increasing expectations, companies should adopt three strategies:
Brand scores should be a key KPI in customer-facing organizations. This can be done using real-time analytics, rather than looking backward from a point in the past.
To support customer use cases, you must have the right technology and data foundation.
Align your individual and collective goals throughout the customer journey to ensure that any gaps between functional silos, such as marketing, sales, or customer service, are not visible to your end customer.
3. Old truth: Customers want what you have.
A new truth: Customers expect you have exactly what they want.
We must strive for new customer experience values in both B2C as well as B2B settings if the bar is not set higher. Today's consumers expect seamless, connected, intuitive, timely, and relevant experiences. They are focused on getting what they want when they want it. They insist on their independence and will not be stopped.
These experiences require companies to put data and technology at their core. This will likely mean that machine learning and/or artificial intelligence are part of the mix. Why? Because data allows us to create more relevant experiences across a number of dimensions of the four Cs.

Commerce can be described as either physical retail or e-commerce.
The community can be as simple as gathering B2B buyers at an online trade show or hosting a webinar about home repair for consumers;
Convenience: This could be offering customers coupons or benefits through a loyalty program.
Currently, the majority of the 4Cs can be delivered in a "one-size-fits-all" approach. However, as consumers demand more personalization, companies will need greater data and intelligence to improve their decision-making, drive greater relevance in customer interactions, and build stronger human connections with their brands.
4. An old truth: Courting customers is like dating.

Marketing was for a long time about purchasing mass reach, or targeted reach, at the highest rates in media and hoping it converts. It was basically like going to as many bars and parties as possible in the hope of meeting that special person. It was full of serendipity and spontaneity. There were many face-to-face encounters.
Swipe through dating apps and online dating. Finding your perfect match is less about luck than it is about data and algorithms. Marketing terms have changed from brand marketing to increase reach to performance marketing to generate leads. This trend was only made worse by the rapid growth of digital channels in response to the pandemic.
While performance marketing is an important part of the mix, CMOs must recognize that it is a delicate balance between brand and performance that produces the best results. They must also fight against any bias towards the most quantifiable. Many CMOs are now bringing their customer relations management (CRM), team closer to their media teams in order to better understand the entire continuum and increase efficiency. CRM is powered primarily by first-party data or customer data that the company has (with consent from the consumer), and is the driving force behind initiatives such as couponing, personalization, and email marketing.
This first-party data can be used to increase media efficiency, especially digital media. It allows companies to target customers on a one-to-1 basis. Third-party data is losing value as the key browsers introduce rule changes in January 2022. Marketers are becoming better at designing the online "dates", learning new ways to harness their data, and creating new partnerships with publishers. Even though the dating (or targeting) strategies will change with the new rules, it is important that companies allow for both brand performance marketing and bottom-funnel strategy to drive top-funnel goals. They work together better.
5. An old truth: Customers should be at the center of your marketing strategy.
A new truth: Your customer journey must include customers.
Customer-centricity is not a new concept. But, functional silos that interact directly with customers often become disconnected due to geography, politics, org charts, and technologies. It is difficult to conceal these internal gaps from customers, who assume that the entire company knows about them. All of us have called customer service to speak with a chatbot or call center representative who did not know the exact location of a retail store.
Marketing is only one part of a relationship with a customer. In a B2C context, we engage them, convert them to a sale either directly or indirectly, and hopefully retain them so that they become advocates and open to cross-sells and upsells. Marketers must view marketing in the context of the entire end-to-end process and work to connect all the dots where possible.
It is unrealistic to assume that all customer-facing functions could or should report to the exact same location. It is common to believe that reorganization will solve all problems. It is much more important to examine the operating model carefully and to consider the technologies, processes, talent, data models, and KPIs in order to identify the best ways to align the operations around customers' needs and then drive change.
6. 6.Truth: Relationships are important.

Building trusting relationships with customers is essential. For example, advertising makes a promise, and then it falls on the product, customer experience, and service to fulfill that promise.
Covid-19, however, has placed a greater emphasis on relationships in B2B sales. With virtual sales, existing relationships have helped teams to retain revenue momentum and capitalize on their previous bonds. Prospecting for new customers requires a different set of skills.
Trust and integrity are essential to driving market momentum in both cases. This has required a significant recasting of talent for sales and marketing executives in B2B companies. They need to find people who are best suited to drive relationships in the new world of online interactions. A world that is less dependent on charm and even expense accounts and more on solutions and insights. Trust will be built and rewarded by those who listen to customers and create solutions.
Trust is also crucial in a B2C environment. Trust is essential to the value exchange between a business and a customer. Companies rely more on the personal data they get from consumers. They must comply with regulations and secure the data. However, companies also have the chance to build loyalty and differentiation by creating more transparent privacy controls interfaces. Clearer information will help consumers make better decisions and foster trust.
7. An old truth: Agility can be described as a technological process.
A new truth: Agility is a modern marketing strategy.
For years, we have known that agile cycles are better than a linear or sequential "waterfall" approach to technological development. Covid-19 set an unstoppable trend in marketing to adopt a similar agile mentality. A company might quickly discover that its message is not correct or that its supply chain is not ready to deliver. This could lead to a crisis in advertising and public relations. Imagine a commercial that shows people grouped together, but not showing social distancing. The traditional approval mechanisms became restrictive and long-lead creative processes felt obsolete.
It was a fortunate outcome that the crisis created a mindset of marketing agility, which is likely to last. Continuous consumer listening and demand sensing are essential for marketing to be able to capitalize on the current zeitgeist of consumer sentiment. It also allows for faster decision-making and greater flexibility in key areas such as budgeting, creativity, and media.
8. An old truth: Great products should be the foundation of your brand.
A new truth: Your brand must stand behind great values.
Brand loyalty was severely affected by the pandemic. EY Future Consumer Index showed that 61% of consumers were willing to switch to white label products, regardless of the category. This dynamic, combined with the growing consumer awareness and activism triggered by the 2020 social unrest, should lead brands to be very focused on the values that they represent.
EY research shows that, while price, convenience, and quality still matter, consumers are now more concerned about factors such as trust, ethical sourcing, and social responsibility when choosing products and services. Marketing has the opportunity to educate the C-suite and the board about the importance of brand values in order to differentiate in a post-pandemic market where consumer preferences have changed.
9. An old truth: Modern marketing requires the right technology stack.
Neue Truth is, modern marketing requires a balance of factors.
It has become easy to see the "tech stack" as the ultimate marketing tool. It is useless to drive 40 mph in a Ferrari.
Your technology architecture must be well-matched with the right data, use cases, and a human enablement approach in order to achieve results. This last requirement is probably the most crucial. Human enablement is about understanding the use of data and technology across an organization and making sure people have the skills and the measurement tools to encourage innovation and success. The desired return on investment in marketing technology cannot be achieved without technology, data, human capability, and the right use cases.
10. An old truth: Marketing is essential for growth.
A new truth: Marketing is the core of the growth agenda for all C-suite executives.
Marketing was, undoubtedly, a cost center in companies during times when the primary responsibility was to maximize return-on-investment. It was often the first area to be cut in difficult times when topliner results were compromised.
Marketing has been elevated to the top of the C-suite during the pandemic as a leader in digital transformation, a key player in the customer journey, and a voice for the consumer. All of these are vital functions that other functional leaders must understand. The C-suite must understand the market zeitgeist in order to adapt to new opportunities and navigate the future.

The thing that l’ll be sacrificing is watching less violent television shows/movies and playing less violent games because I believe that influence will impact on more violent behavior and activity. Another reason why I believe making this sacrifice can probaly reduce or even stop gun violence or violence on it’s own is because people tend to get this violent behavior from feeding of off violent television shows and movies and playing violent video games. However, my goal is to do the exact opposite and by doing that watching less violent content such violent television shows and movies and also playing less video games. Also with this sacrifice it would mean that I would have to give up something that I enjoy doing on a daily basis but doing will be for the greater good because how much more loss can we take? For example, according to the website, “American Psychological Association,” also known , “Psychology- Science In Action.” In that article it states, “As a result of 15 years of “consistently disturbing’’ about the violent content of children programs, the Surgeon Scientific Advisory Committee on television and social behavior was fromed in 1969 to asses the impact if violence in the attitudes, values and behavior of viewers. Following my sacrifice of watching and playing less violent content, children has been entertained with violent content has most likely been under te influence of having more violent and aggressive behavior. Another chart from the same article, “Violent video games and young people” shows actual facts and statistics of how evidence and reasoning behind it is true.
Therefore based on the claims, theories, evidence and statistics from that shows and proves how kids that are in an environment that is exposed to violent content can lead them down a path connected to violent and aggressive behavior.
Based on the evidence and statistics above my thoughts on the subject is that it has been proven by research facilities and experts that violent content has been a major effect their hostility behavior meaning violent and bad behavior. Also that signs of violent behavior was already being shown by children before the violent content, however, numbers of hostility level based on the violent content has risen massively. I believe that this connects back to my sacrifice of watching and playing less violent content because the graph from above shows the exact reason of why I chose this sacrifice. That reason is because I want to avoid going down the path that children who has been into a lot of this violent content has gone down to. For example, like I said before according to the chart above, it shows how hostility levels in children has risen according to the behavior they have been showing. Also that their mind are set in a way of being addicted to liking and somehow being connected to these violent contents.

I believe that the image and the evidence from the source “New York Times’ and the article called, “Shooting In The Dark” proves my thoughts and claim above. With me stating that I think that children who are drawn to entertained by violent video games feel like they’re somehow connected to it and I think that the evidence from the article and the image above proves that. Therefore these reasons, evidence, claims, and thoughts shows how I and that you should believe that violent behavior tends to come from violent content that children are entertained by.
Now I’ll leave you thinking, do you believe that children gets this violent behavior from out of nowhere or from the violent content that they’re entertained by? Why do you think I made this sacrifice, for nothing or starting but also stopping something way bigger than us, violent and aggressive behavior?
