Kyosai Kawanabe is perhaps the most fascinating and unique artist of the Meiji Era (1867-1912) in the transition from old to new Japan. A master creator of both the natural and supernatural world, he was drawn to both the humorous and horrible - https://www.tokyoweekender.com/art_and_culture/arts/kawanabe-kyosai-ukiyo-e/

Okami
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okami – Concept artists: Kenichiro Yoshimura, Sawaki Takeyasu, Mari Shimazaki Okami is a beautiful Japanese game designed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom. When looking at this game you can see it has a distinct art style it has incorporated this Japanese ink / wood print style which you can see the influence from many famous paintings such as the great wave, kawanabe kyosai the tiger and Hiroshi Yoshida Fuji from Kawaguchi Lake. I want to see if I could play around with this style and mix the realism and this into my work. This brush and ink style can have beautiful action movements especially when it comes to element-based attacks which I intend to try incorporating into my project as this is stylistically gorgeous and can be a great inspiration.

Kawanabe Kyosai - Ghost
I fell in love with this piece when i saw it at an exhibition in the Royal academy in London. I love the ethereality of it, the way the artist creates light in the piece and how the ghostly half appears to be somehow transluscent.
I think what i took from this wrok into mine, is ideas of changing, decay and being caught between two states of being.

Kiosai being referred to is Japanese artist Kawanabe Kyōsai who found a head floating in Kanda river. He fished the head out and drew studies of it than gave it a proper burial. His nickname was “the painting demon”.
His daughter, also Kawanabe Kyosai, became an artist as well
