the tord villain question. ah the thing that divides the eddsworld fandom to this day. my opinion on this is a little nuanced. i personally like that direction for his character. i think it's interesting. it recontextualizes a lot of his strange behaviors from earlier episodes. fan interpretation of the actual content of the end episodes have led to a lot of people hating that idea though. i can see why too. i'm not a fan on how people decided to portray tord afterwards. i don't think he was a nice or pleasant person from day one, but i definitely don't think he's a sociopath or psychopath or insane. well not any more insane than everyone else. there's a lot more going on with tord psychologically. he has shown to care about people to an extent. i definitely think he has some kind of personality disorder. i've seen fans discuss schizoid personality disorder and borderline personality disorder in regards to a diagnosis for tord. i don't know enough on the subject to comment either way. imo a good tord wouldn't lose any of the fun aspects of his personality to fit better into any given villain trope. trying to fit square peg in a circle hole, ya know?

Right now im just reading a lot of poi fanfics and watch fanvids cause i can't accept that the series is over 😂 --- i know what you mean about fics affecting you negatively. I had this with 13rw (the Show and some fics) everything was so dark and hopeless that i had to stop watching it. I also love to seek out fics where someone is hurt so i can feel my pain through the characters (1)

But i try to read only fics with lots of comfort so it kinda feels like i get comforted as well (dont know if that makes sense). If it makes you uncomfortable or if its unhealthy for you to write about this i completely understand and i dont mean to come of as pushing you to write. Yeah big mood I project a lot on comfort fics as well. For suicide fics, I think it also depends on how the fics adress the subject. It's something that is complicated to write. If I read a suicide fic with no recovery I'm gonna project but feel like shit. But with recovery, I can project into the recovery as well so it's better ! I read a really good ace attorney fic showing Miles recovering after a suicide attempt, it was thoughtful and didn't fall into the pitfalls of magical super fast recovery/love heals everything, and some lines stuck with me, it was really good and comforting. But yeah if it's just a suicide/suicide attempt then I don't think it's good for me (but sometimes I still read it bc I'm a Dumb Bitch).

Plance Mega Meta

Attention all Fellow Gardeners! LOOOONNG Post Ahead!!!!

This was a pain in the butt to make but well worth it! It's all over the place but it still presents my point of the many reasons why Pidge and Lance is most likely Endgame. Some may be a stretch but most of them have meaning! I know I missed some but it was hard to fit all this together and still remember everything lol

Ofcourse, whether your for Plance or just scrolling around, it's your opinion to agree or disagree! It's fine! This is just an analysis of mine and other gardeners of why Plance may be endgame in our eyes! :)

Alrighty Then!

Okay, I’m starting off with all the comics of them that I know of!

“Lance’s Guide To Falling in Love” explains that you need activities that you both like to do each other. That sounds a lot like Pidge and Lance with the Game Console they both got! That’s a similar activity they always do! “Love is about feeling vulnerable. [. ] finding your best friend. That’s why you have to create opportunities to fall in love.” That whole line pretty much explained Lance and Pidge’s relationship. They are pretty much best friends and I’m so sure they have been vulnerable towards each other in many ways that I will explain later on as well.

That second image on the right is just so cute because Lance is holding her shoulder for reassurance as she plays that chess game they’re lives depend on!

The second two images I put an arrow on so u guys can see which scene starts first. On these two panels, first, Pidge had forgotten a lot of things when she put on that crown. I think it was that it gave her too much knowledge that it made her forget things or something but slowly started remembering and the first thing she remembered was Lance. If that doesn’t show she cares about him, aside from her actually saying she’s glad he’s not dead, then I don’t know what is! I'll also add that the last bit where he said "I think that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me" and she replies "Is that true?" maybe made her question herself because maybe she thought, Why would I be mean to him if I know I like him? Who knows. Lol.

So the third row of two pictures with Pidge, we all know she super smart and loves intelligent puns and Lance, well he tries to catch on. On the second picture he made a pun that Shiro caught onto so what is his reply? To not tell Pidge lol That just shows how much of an influence she’s become in him!

The fourth picture going down, we have Lance and Pidge saying some sort of jokes where they switch it up the next time they use those phrases again but I just love how close they seem and how gentle of expressions they seem to give each other on the second half of the panels!

As for the famous picture where Lance and Pidge are playing their game, well, Lance says that after seeing his family and so on that the next thing he will do is be with Pidge, and not just that! Take her her favorite cookies as well! That’s a great boyfriend right there! ;)

The last picture all the way on the bottom left is just cute banter and oh gosh. They are so cute!

Now, the final picture on the bottom-right, we have a page of Kaltenecker. But wait, his name is colored in a shade of Cyan… Cyan is a greenish-blue color, the color of the two Paladins who own her! Pidge and Lance! That’s just so darn… ugh! And the fact that Lance replied “Moo” for all the answers and the part where he said “we presume” only means they did all this together! That’s just so boyfriend/girlfriend of them!!! Lol

I’m sorry ahead of time if this gets confusing. I added what season/episodes some are in that I remembered.

The first four I want to talk about (First Two Screen Caps on the first and second row) are from 1x1 (Season 1 x Episode 1) where they are talking about a ship entering earths atmosphere. The fact that they didn’t say spacecraft or shuttle but chose SHIP makes it feel that DW (DreamWorks) did this on purpose because as soon as Pidge says it’s a ship then Lance snatches the goggles, that she is still holding, and uses them! And then she says “We gotta see that ship!” and Lance FOLLOWS! Only Lance! Hunk stays behind!

Top Right>> Okay so now I’m doing this to make it easier lol. This SC (Screen Cap) is Lance noticing that the Kurboros Mission is a touchy subject for Pidge. He’s been close to her since they met so that only makes their bond stronger. That and Lance has amazing Intuitive Skills that we all know of which I will bring up again later!

The cinematic perspective of this whole episode just yelled Plance and Kallura. In these two scenes both couples specifically grab onto each other, there being SC of only when Keith grabs Alluras hand and Lance grabbing Pidge's. The shot where those light creatures come around them, you see Pidge, while holding Lances hand in the sweetest way in the back and same with Allura with Keith. Its just so… so… cinematically pleasing if you go for either ship lol

R4 SC3>> This was just a cute shot of them I put in to fill in the gap lol but its great!

R5 SC1-3>> 1x4 This episode was when Lance saved Coran from the explosion the fake Rover made. When Shiro and Lance are captures by Sendak, Pidge goes to save them only to be captured by him but Lance suddenly woke up from his unconscious state to shoot Sendak and save Pidge. He then falls back to the floor. I think this shows so much. Sure, he has yet to know Pidge was a girl at that time but he’s so close to her that he wouldn’t let anyone hurt her, even when he’s unconscious lol.

R6 SC1-2>> 1x1 Going back to this episode. I had seen this since I started watching the series but didn’t think much of it until I really put attention to the scene the second time around. Lance was showing off to Pidge, calling himself “The Tailor” and what not. Pidge in response gave a small blush, even of he did fail the simulator test. Sure, he obviously has yet to know she’s a girl but whose to say that’s just how their relationship has unknowingly built up? ;)

R6 SC3>> 2x6 This is interesting because Lance made fun of Pidge first saying her fancy Galra Finder didn’t work, then her showing her annoyed face. It then changes the scene to Shiro talking to one of the Aliens telling them the Galra were there only to change the scene back to Lance and Pidge, Pidge saying “So the Galra were here, Lance.” With a smug expression causing Lance to blush. Why would DW go back to this scene? It’s just playful banter BUT playful banter of them hinting us of a relationship to be maybe!

R1 SC1-2>> It’s cute how Lance is all excited telling Pidge “That’s my thing!” when she didn’t believe he was a good shot haha like he gets excited telling her things!

R2 SC1-2>> These both are from different episodes but are of both Lance and Pidge blushing. Lance from him acting cocky and Pidge from seeing Lance in a body suit (at least that’s what I think) where she can see all the toned parts of his body ;) She is a teenager after all lol

Top Right Down Three>> All these SC are symbolic to me. A foreshadowing because these are a few of many where it shows them together in a single scene or doing the same. This shows me that they can’t be any more similar than they already are! They are one in the same honestly.

Last Three Down>> 5x6 This scene is one of my Favorites! Allura and Lotor had left to check out where Altean Alchemy is held along with the knowledge of Alteans and Lance is freaking out talking to everyone asking if she will be alright or if they are doing anything as Pidge and the rest try to turn the Castle back on. This whole time Lance interrupts them as Pidge works on the castle. Sure it sounds that she’s simply annoyed but if you listen to the tone she sounds more than annoyed! It’s like she’s annoyed, not just because he’s interrupting them, but because he’s over exaggerating about Allura. Obviously everyone is worried but Lance just goes overboard causing Pidge to also go overboard as everyone just stares at both of them back and forth. Haha.

Last 3 Second Row Down>> These three shots are from different episodes but you can see that it’s Hunk and Pidge doing their Team Punk Bump as Lance watches. I don’t exactly remember the order of it and some scenerios are different than others but you can see that he’s not always keeping a big smile. Almost like he’s jealous that they have a ‘Thing’ while he doesn’t have one with either of them *cough* Pidge *cough*.

Last 3 Third Row Down>> This could kind of be related to the last point. 6x3 When they are done playing M&M, Pidge and Hunk got out of their stump from what they are doing, make an explanation of what to do next and run off. Meanwhile Lance looks somewhat annoyed, saying that he doesn’t understand the science words as much as the fantasy ones but his expression from looking at them then look away seems to show otherwise!

R1 SC1-2>> These two scenes have Lance with Pidge’s stuff! Her headphones and some of her pillows! Strange that she’s okay with Lance getting her stuff but not Hunk lol

R1 SC3>> 1x6 Where Pidge reveals she’s a girl and everyone BUT Lance knew. It’s weird that he didn’t know because he has amazing intuition. It kind of feels to me that maybe he’s playing dumb? Maybe he DID know? That’s why he’s always been ‘show offy’ with Pidge. Maybe… just maybe… that’s a big stretch right there but an interesting thought lol.

R2 SC1-2>> These two are a little different. The first one, Hunk and Pidge are teasing Lance because Allura is with Lotor but Pidge is kind of teasing in a ‘Haha she won’t return your feelings’ kind of way because she likes him. In the next one Lance and Pidge are teasing Hunk with Shay but her expression is more playful. Hmm. Interesting. ;)

R2 SC3/R3 SC3>> 7x1 “Wow. They’re a lot uglier than I thought they’d be.” “I think it’s cute. You know, in a creepy hideous sort of way. Like you Lance.” The fact that Pidge acknowledged Lance was even remotely cute shows she likes Lance! C’mon y’all! The look that Coran gives Pidge after that comment just kills me haha. He’s like “Ahhh. I see you Numbah five.” 😂 but really. The fact that Pidge says that right after Lance talks shows it even more!

R3 SC1-2>> So I actually have these two flipped wrong but the one with him by himself is when Pidge calls him the goofball of the team. At first it seems like he didn’t care much, since it’s their usual banter but then when Lance talks to Allura, it seems that Pidge’s words do somewhat get to Lance. Not in a mean way but Lance is vulnerable when it comes to Pidge.

R4>> 2x4 It’s taken me a while to figure this scene out because it was always strange to me how Pidge’s tone is. (Also, sorry I cut off some of the subs 😅) Pidge is amazed by how beautiful the tech is while Lance replies saying “It’s not a sunset Pidge” because maybe he loves sunsets. In that, Pidge replies “Your right. A billion sunsets just happen every day” with a kind of somber tone. Maybe she’s never really cared for sunsets? But in that third SC in the row, there is a small picture of a sunset on a beach on her wall. Maybe she’s coming to enjoy sunsets because of Lance? Maybe he’s talked to her about it? Maybe it reminds her of him? Interesting. There is also one more piece I will bring up in the next set of SC’s.

R5>> These! 1x4 Lance sees Rover but right away wonder where Pidge is because he knows she’s close to it. 7x4 The third SC is from The Feud when Lance is trying to remember Rolo's name. Interesting that right after trying to remember Rolo he says “Yeah. Pidge loved that Robot.” Not “Nyma was awesome.” Or “They tricked us”. He could have said any of that but chose something that reminded him of Pidge!

R6>> 2x2 Lance mentions he likes mermaids (maybe because he’s always loved the beach) and in 4x2 in Pidge’s room, she has a stuffed Mermaid!

Out of context but I just realized that for the whole Rover thing, its on Ep 4 of S 1 & 7. For the mermaid thing it’s on Ep 2 of S 2 & 4. What a weird coincidence lol.?

R1 SC1>> 6x2 Chulatt and Chuchule making a heart with their cute little mice tails! This scene is where the mice tell Allura Lance’s secret of him liking her. What I feel gives away plance, and is ironic, is that those two specific Space Mice create the heart! The little one (Chulatt) is Pidge and the pink one (Chuchule) is Lance. We know this because there was a photo of the mice in Paladin Armor and they were in those specific colored armors. If anyone wants to add that picture in the comments, knock yourself out lol.!

R1 SC2-3>> 2x7 Hey look! Another sunset! And not just that. In the store they got a game console that they worked hard to get together, along with their Moo Child, Kaltenecker! 😏 Lol. This episode really brought out the relationship they have in full bloom! First! Lance was originally going to go with Allura and get her something pretty and shiny BUT instead, he stopped flirting to go and help Pidge get something she really wanted! Plus, had a blast doing it! The tender look he gives her when she’s holding the game is so heartwarming and he’s just as excited as she is to start the console up! Remember what he said is a point to falling in love? “Love is about finding your best friend.” Welp. There ya go Lance.!

R2 SC1-2>> 4x3 Before this scene Matt had complimented Pidge for being smart, so she responded with a goofy smile. Lance also compliments her intelligence right after Matt. She gives him this soft look. I rest my case. Lol.

R3 SC1-2>> 7x9 The Paladins arrive back on earth where their loved ones await them. The most anxious is Pidge as she jumps to her mom and who, you may ask, does it change to right afterwards? Lance. The shot has Lance and Hunk but it’s more zoomed in on Lance with the gentlest look that I believe he’s ever gave honestly. He then gets interrupted by his family running to him, him in tears of the joy in seeing them. THIS is another reason why I believe they are endgame because both love their family so much, who reside on earth. I can’t imagine them wanting to stay in space once the war is over. They are made for each other honestly haha.

Top Right going Down SC 2-3>> These two scenes are parallels. They both have strong feelings for eachother and are extremely protective of one another. 7x3 First Lance with his “Don’t you touch her!”. His choice in words just scream I’ll kill you! Because of how protective of her she is. Knowing he is tired up and unable to do much, he still tried to rescue her. 2x10 Pidge’s “Lance! No!” Just tells me she has liked him for so long. Her feelings were already strong since the beginning. This scene didn’t need to emphasize on her wanting to save Lance and showing emotion but DW did it this way on purpose! ;)

R4>> 6x3 Ahhh. Monsters & Mana again! You know how we’ve all found out that the filler episodes aren’t actually fillers but a foretelling of future things? Well, look at these cuties once again having lack of personal space! And then the second SC is of Pidge looking up at Lance instead of looking at the view like the others but still enjoying herself with her big smile! The third SC is now of Lance giving her that gentle look once again. Instead of looking at the view, he looks at Pidge as she is having the time of her life!

R5 SC1-2>> 5x1 I kind of messed up on my choice of SC but I’m sure you all will still understand. This episode is when Matt and Pidge failed in saving their dad. Pidge is there hugging her legs from the thought of her dad not being around anymore. Lance is the first to turn to see her and then Hunk. What I see though is Hunk having a worried expression and Lance looks a little worried for her as he is turning but once he is standing and looking her way, he looks more determined. Determined for her to get her father but for her to also be safe maybe? Last thing is that on the SC where it shows her hugging her legs, Lance is still in the shot. I would say that this is a vulnerable scene for Pidge because she is so in distress because of her father.

R5 SC3>> 6x7 Just a simple SC of Pidge looking back at Trash Lance as they get ready to leave the Castle of Lions. Trash Hunk is there too but she looks over Trash Lance lol.

R6>> 4x3 This whole row scene is just so cute. Lance and Hunk run to Pidge as she lands. Lance being the first one to get to her just smile at seeing his girlfriend back lol. She gives them all a smile as she holds her little space mouse.

R1 SC1 Down First Two SC>> 1x10 I don’t think many think much of this scene but how can you not? The first SC Pidge messed up the robot and said “Whoops” but the second one was after Lance was asking about Allura, giving off a goofy smile until Pidge’s robot smacked him in the face. Afterwards she said “Whoops” again but in a more sarcastic tone. That’s jealosy at its finest lol.

R1 SC2 Down First Two SC>> Lance is showing off the pictures of him with the alien girls but to Pidge. I sometimes wonder if he did it on purpose to get a reaction from her because she was smiling before he showed her the picture. Jealousy moment numero dos! Lol

R1 SC3 Down First Two SC>> 1x10 I love this scene because as soon as Keith leaves after Lance told him to not leave, he glances over to Pidge who is very unimpressed. Afterwards he turned his head with a smug expression saying “I think I told him” and Pidge responding with the most sarcastic “You are the paragon of leadership, Lance” with him still being all proud. Its all just ugh. I love their relationship hahaha.

R3>> Dancing buddies? I think Yes! Lol how much more perfect can they be for eachother? Hahaha

R1>> 2x4 Yet another scene I love because in this scene Lance and Pidge are kind of moving in sync. Lol. It’s so them haha.

R2&3 First SC>> 7x10 This is another scene that I don’t think that a lot of people take too in depth but Allura and Lance just had a moment where they both blush. Afterwards, all the paladins head out to their destination as they concentrate but Pidge looks like the only one that’s a little… sad? Distressed? The little lines under her eyes show a different emotion than the other paladins. She looks like she’s just thinking. I think she may have seen Allura with Lance and now is torn by her feelings because Allura might reciprocate his feelings. Right after her shot of the green Lion arriving to her, it turns to Lance who is calm and ready but we all know that scene that red showed up just in the Knick of time. I think red knows that Lance is meant to be with another, not with the one he wants but someone he will need.

R2&3 Second SC>> 6x2 This is where Lance is trying to get Alluras attention but she’s too into Lotor to care. Lance says “She’s smart, courageous, and makes me want to be a better person”. Adding on that aside from being an alien princess, she’s those things but that he isn’t a prince like Lotor so what does it matter. The first SC he honestly explained Pidge so if that’s what he is looking for in someone then maybe that was a hint to us. And then he goes on saying that Allura won’t take his feelings seriously and that he has nothing to offer. Maybe this is another foreshadowing that Pidge is going to take it super serious and he doesn’t need to offer anything with her because the way is is already everything she wants ;) That is a stretch though lmao.

R2&3 Third SC>> I’m just going to show you guys and not explain to much with this haha The Plance Nebula! We all know it but I don’t think we all yet know that it’s been in front of our faces all this time! In the intro of every episode when the screen pops up. That’s the nebula just on its side! Now answer me this. If it wasn’t important then why would it be right after Pidge’s Nebula in the trailer for S8???? That’s the only different nebula aside from all the others being the Paladins themselves!

I’m telling Y’all that alllllll this is what makes me think that Plance is Endgame!

7x13 If these scene itself isn't enough to have you think they are foreshadowing them together then man. I don't remember seeing any other two Paladins do this when they use their bayards at the same time on voltron. Its just such a powerful scene for a super power couple!!!

“Hey, Danie, how do you darken those black and white icons anyway?”

((Well friends, disgruntled eevee friend is here with a simple gimp tutorial for you!!

What you’ll need is:

GIMP(other programs should work but I can’t really help you with those. Someone else probably can, though!)

Manga scans(preferably the best quality you can find!  I do not recommend you use fanart, and I do not condone use of fanart without permission from the artist. not just credit linking back to them, not ‘credit to the owner,’ permission.)

Simple enough, right? Pop that bad boy open in GIMP(once you’ve installed it you should be able to find it in the ‘open with’ part of your context menu--the one that pops up by right clicking the pic) and then we can get started!!

Rad. You got your pic. Now then, editing anything black and white to a darker shade is really simple, if a bit time-consuming.

You’re going to want to use the “Free Select Tool”--it should be the third button  on the top right. The little lasso.

You can click on it or just hit the F key and it should pop right over to it. You can also use the Scissors Select Tool(the little scissors on the far right, same line,) but personally I like the Free Select tool a bit better. It does things a bit more. . .stiffly? but I haven’t figured out how to backspace with the scissor thing yet.

MOVING ON. Let’s zoom in on our subject!

Poor Gil’s looking awfully pale. And not just because he’s sick lol, just because it’s in black and white(and he’s a pretty light-skinned character.)  Now, as you can see, not only is his hair in the way, but so are his eyes. On top of that, his hands aren;t touching the rest of his skin, so selection is gonna have to go in multiple places. But, hey! GIMP has a feature for that!

With the Free Select Tool selected, all we have to do is start clicking around the parts we wanna darken. Real simple.

With each click, you should get a little bubble. You can also drag/draw if you wanna make things less. . .angular. The great thing about the bubbles is that they can be dragged about! So if you happen to slap a segment in the wrong place or otherwise wanna move it. . . .

Boop! New location. And if you put one in the wrong place entirely and just wanna get rid of it, hitting backspace will take out the last segment.

So, I’m sure you can figure out what to do from here!  Get to clicking!  Put on some music or a video or something in the background so you don’t get bored, if you’re into that. You can pop another window on top of it too--to check your messages or do your drafts or what have you--and come back and your segments will still be in place until you stop making them or close the image.

Click your way around the part you wanna change the color of(zooming in and out as you go helps--use ctrl+your scroll wheel or the + and - keys to do this without swapping tools) aaaaaand

Tada! All the little dotted lines you see there represent the selection.

As you can see I lucked out with him because his bangs tend to make contact with his eyes--that way I could go around the eyes to keep them out of the selection. . . . But, as you can see, the mouth is still trapped in there.

Now, using the same tool, hold ctrl or click on this box here! Note, this will change the setting of the tool until you click a different box, so be careful!

While holding ctrl or with this box selected, click somewhere within the selection. You’ll start doing the same bubble thing--but this time anything you encapsulate will be removed from the selection. Your cursor-lasso will have a little minus sign next to it before you start clicking.

Bleep bloop! Achievement unlocked. You removed part of your selection. Proud of you! The boundaries of the selection are updated--now there are broken lines inside of it, too, to show where the selection doesn’t go!

You could do them on their own, but you can also hold shift or click on this box right here.

(I usually have this on by default and just use ctrl when i wanna subtract stuff. But how you do it is up to you!)

When you have shift held or that box clicked, you can add to the selection. That means stuff can be selected that’s not touching the initial part that you selected.

Repeat the initial steps! Click click boom.

Now his hands (and that bit of forehead that I missed because Oz’s hand is in the way thanks Oz) are slected as well. That was easy, right? Very simple.

Now then. The coloring part is also simple. However, you may be like me and may want small details changed before you get the darkening in--for example, to turn Gilbert into Loch, he needs to be rid of his double eyelid, because Loch has monolid eyes. It’s just a matter of erasing--but don’t forget to turn off the alpha channel if you’ve got it on. The alpha channel enables transparency, which makes it so that you erase to transparency instead of to your secondary color. To get rid of the alpha channel, just right click the layer in the menu on the right or click the layer menu on the top or right click the picture and go to ‘Layer/Transparency.’

So the next step is a bit more trial-and-error-y and more up to how you want the colors to look. Loch is a pretty dark-skinned guy, so the edit I make will have Gilbert very dark. It’s just a matter of fussing with your chosen settings.

Everything you want now is probably under Colors.

You can choose to play with the Curves, which is a slant/graph of darkness to lightness on various existing shades of light and dark on the picture. Messing with this too much may make your lines in the selection a different shade than the ones outside of it. Personally, I don’t usually play with the Curves much, but they can be useful for altering multiple shades at once.

Pro tip! If you like your setting and plan on using it again to make the same/a similar shade, hit the little plus sign(+) on the dropdown next to Presets! You’ll be able to save that exact setting to make the process easier next time.

My preferred method is simply playing with Brightness and Contrast.  It’s pretty much the same thing but. . .a bit simpler imo. It doesn’t go quite as dark as Curves does, but you’re also less likely to mess up your lines’ shades if you use it.

As you can see, not as dark as the initial option and it’s fully at the end. Kinda sucks a bit if you’re going for a really dark tone or using a base that’s solid white instead of a little greyish. But it’s also simpler, in my opinion, since you don’t have as many options here as you do playing with the Curves.

Loch is looking much more like himself now! Proud of him. And me. And you, for what you’ve done so far if you’re editing along on your own pic! Good work!!

“But Danie,” you may say if you look at any icons I have of Loch, “his eye shade is still awfully bright. . . .”

“Well, friend, rinse and repeat remains the answer. Deselect everything(Hit the Selection menu and hit “None” or click the very first toolbox option and click anywhere outside of your selection and poof it goes.) and start selecting again!

Poor sick Loch. Or embarrassed, or however I intend on using this image.

Now GIMP is a bit different in that attempting to save the file(ctrl+s) will save it as the gimp editable file.  To save the image you want to hit ctrl+e(or ctrl+shift+e if you don’t wanna lose your base file.) E is for Export and it’ll let you save your image as an image file!

Now that you’ve saved it, time for me to teach you how to make it a simple icon. Real easy stuff!!

Because you edited the whole image, you can also reframe it for icons rather than just having to make a new icon and edit it over and over again. Makes things a bit quicker.

Click the rectangle select tool! (Or Ellipse if you want a circle! I use squares!!)

From here, look down at the settings.  Make sure you have nothing selected.  Chances are, you want an even shape--same length on each side, a nice square or even circle. If you have nothing selected, it’ll be 0,0 and you’ll be all set. If you want a certain ratio, that’s a different story, but we’re talking basics here.

Click the checkbox next to “Fixed” and make sure the dropdown says “Aspect Ratio”! This will make it so that any selection you make will have dimensions that can be divided or multiplied evenly up to that shape--in this case, a perfect square.

Now drag on your image so you can get a selection the size you need! You can adjust the side of it to be more even for cleaner resizing results in the same area. My pic is pretty big, so mine came out to an even 800x.

Copy your selection! just hit ctrl+c--same as any copying. Don’t cut it in case you wanna come back and get another cut of the pic(which helps with actual comic pages!)

Now, hit ctrl+shift+z to paste it into a new image!

Now all you have to do is resize the picture to the size you want. If you’re working with a big pic like I am, you’ll see that the size is gonna be wrong because you’re zoomed out--just hit 1 on your keyboard and it’ll maximize your zoom.

Press Image at the top of your window! Then press “Scale Image!”

You see the little chain connected between the Width and Height measurements? Make sure that’s connected, or manually edit it to the same number--that way you don’t get things shrunk down in weird dimensions like an 800px tall picture that’s only 100px wide.

Change the numbers next to width and height to whatever size you want your icon to be! As an old fashioned LJ/DW rper, I usually go with 100x.

(if it looks a little funky, try a different cut(again, try and make sure your sides are even before you start!) or try messing with the Interpolation. Alternatively, try  smaller cut. Especially if the lines you’re working with are thin.)

Scale!

Smol and icon sized. Now ctrl+E to save it and you’re all set!! You have yourself an edited, b&w manga icon. Don’t forget to go back and make a few more cuts of the images for extra emotional range and options.

I did this in about an hour, including time taken to set up this post. It’s normally not a long process by any means, so please don’t be daunted!

Week 5

Link #1: How to Create a Painting With Shading : Painting Techniques

~You want to make sure you have at least one dark color and one light color. Okok, so I’ll be including a little picture of what I did, but I’ll be using Emerald Green as the light color and Ultramarine as the dark color :) ~Now mix them together to get your medium tone. Oh. I mean, it comes out as a pretty teal owo. You’ll see in a bit, dw. ~Dip your brush in the water and just dip into your middle tone and paint a circle on your paper or canvas. I hope y’all know that I don’t expect you to do this with me. I mean, I wouldn’t mind if you tried this out LOL. Whatever floats your boat y’know. Besides, who doesn’t love painting circles, am I right?- But seriously, circles do be pretty hard to make legit circles. Like, I think I’ve only managed to get one even close to being an actual circle, and that wasn’t even that close. ~It’s completely okay to have some variation, thicker paint around the edges and then kind of wash you paint in the center of the sphere (for now it’s a circle, but that’s besides the point) ~You don’t have to completely rinse your brush out. It's okay to leave a little bit of that color on because it’ll create a smooth transition. I actually didn’t think of that to be completely honest with you. I tend to always wash my brush completely before I even go into the next color. I- well the more you know, the better you can be c: ~Grab a little bit of that light color and you’re gonna add some highlights in the upper left or right corner of your sphere (whichever one you prefer I suppose, I tend to always have the light coming from the left) ~Even though we’re using acrylic, the paint should be staying fairly wet and just kinda blend that lighter color in with the darker color. So like, wait. I just kinda went braindead for half a second, I’m like- Acrylic paint isn’t wet, that’s only water colors. And- I’m just sitting here now dumbfounded because when you think about it- Water color isn’t wet- But acrylic paint is- it’s- yes- look I have no idea where I was going with this bit LOL. But here it is-(Intense brush strokes) LOL  ~Create as smooth of a transition as possible between the upper and lower part of your sphere. I cannot tell you guys how good this looks tbh, and we’re only maybe halfway done LOL ~Dip the brush back in the water (What if I wanted to dunk it though-) and go for your dark color and basically you’re just going to do the opposite of what you did with the light color, meaning that you’ll be in the opposite, bottom corner (Don’t mind the fact that I just said the bottom corner for a sphere- I’m intelligent, yes.) ~Really try to blend it in with the paint that’s already down there. ~You should be doing light brush strokes, you don’t need to push too much paint down onto the page. See, the thing is. I have a pretty heavy hand when it comes to anything really, so I would say this was the most challenging thing for me, so far that is one of the main struggles for me. ~Now rinse your brush out and leave a little bit of paint on the brush and this is going to be used for the shadow, which is just gonna be a washy shape surrounding the bottom of the sphere and that’ll create a plane for your object (sphere) to be on. I never actually thought of it like that- Usually I thought of the shadow as, well, a shadow lol. But I guess when you add the shadow it does give it a little place to sit. Almost like a dog sitting on a mat or something.

(This video was well done, I would like to say that the sphere doesn’t really look all that much like a sphere BUT it does show enough to help with one’s shading, which was the whole point of that video)

Link #2: Beginners Guide to Highlighting and Shading

(So, since this is a website not a video. I’m going to only write down what I didn’t know already, that way it doesn’t take years to get through all of this kk? I did include the link^ so y’all can check it out yourself as well :) ) ~Most beginners use black for all their shadows. In reality, shadows are rarely a true black. Okay, it’s not like I didn’t know this before. But I once made the mistake of trying to make every single shadow black. I can feel the pain, it’s okay. I just learnt this at the beginning of this class to be honest with y’all LOL. ~To find the right shadow color for your object, add tiny amounts of black or the cool complementary color to the original color of your subject. So basically, what the first link said as well. You have the light color, and the dark color. But to get that dark color you need your medium tone, so kinda backwards in a sense-ish. ~Blend out the edges to make sure you don’t have a harsh line. Use various mixes of your shadow color to gradually lighten your shading and blend it into the surrounding area. I meannnn, I think I’m pretty good at not having harsh lines for the most part. I would say that the edges are usually always a bit harsh, but other than that I think the shading part is pretty well blended. ~You can also use a glaze to add shading. (Yo, okay so I have zero idea what a glaze is when it comes to painting- I-) ~Shadows are not always dark. To be fair, I think most of the beginners (including myself) start off thinking shadows are always dark. That they’re more prominent than the object itself. I think that’s what’s stopped me a lot of the times with my earlier paintings that I did a while ago. ~It is important to study your scene or reference photo before planning out your painting I 100% agree, study the scene, the object, everything. Analyze the reference you want to paint before you actually dive right in. That goes with any art actually, not just painting.  ~It is tempting to add pure white paint where the light source hits your subject. (I can relate, don’t worry) However, as with shadows, highlights are rarely pure white. ~Use a soft brush with a light touch for highlights. They should be subtle and the edges well blended into the surrounding color. Oh goodness, again I’ll have to work on my heavy hand, but other than that I would say I’m doing pretty good about this. ~Gradually build up the highlight rather than having a blob of light colored paint. Uh, oOpS ._.

Link #3: 7 Must-Know Painting Techniques For Artists

1. Under painting

~Create an underpainting in burnt umber or a mix or burnt sienna and phthalo blues to establish shadows and values. I never actually thought about doing this tbh. I usually start with a white canvas and go from there, y’know? Maybe if I try this I’ll see some big improvements, who knows :) ~Work paint up from thin to thick, especially when using slow-drying paints. It’s impossible to work on top of heavy, wet paint. (I agree, like- There’s been times that I’ll legit just try and paint over the first coat maybe 15 minutes after I paint it on. I’m like, nahhh it’ll be fine to paint on, what’s the worse that can happen. Well- I ruined the painting lesson learned though) In the same way, work up to highlights, adding the brightest, and usually heavier, paint at the end. 2. Blocking in

~A filbert is a good general brush for blocking in form and paint. It has a dual nature, combing aspects of flat and round brushes so it can cover detail as well as larger areas.

These would be the type of paint brush that they’re talking about. They’re a mix of flat brushes and round brushes. I maybe have like- 2 of these in all between 3 art kits to be honest. I may have to start investing in more of them, who knows.

3. Building up texture

~Almost anything can be used to add texture to your paint. (I honestly never knew that people added things to their paint to create texture) There are already made texture media available, but I have seen items such as egg shells and sand used to add interest to a painting. Oh? Bro, who would’ve thought about adding eggshells to your paint, like  I honestly never thought about adding anything actually. I just paint with what I got, y’know. But maybe I’ll try this soon™ ~Use an old toothbrush to spatter your image with paint. This can be remarkably effective at suggesting noise and grain. Well, that’s new. I really didn’t think about using anything else for a painting besides paint brushes. oOpS

4. Dry brushing

~This method tends to work best when applying light paint over dark areas/dried paint and is useful for depicting rock and grass texture. So, I’ma be completely honest with you guys. I used to paint without water, and like- I was so ignorant about most of the things that I know now. I would only use water to wash my paint brush afterwards, but now. Water has become so helpful in my paintings oml, it’s amazing what a little bit of water can do for your painting.

5. Sgraffito

~Removing paint can be just as important as applying it. I- I only ever removed paint when it was in the wrong spot.- I didn’t know that removing paint from anywhere can help, especially when you want to expose the underpainting.

6. Glazing

~Glazing is the process of laying a coat of transparent paint over a dry part of the painting, and it’s used for intensifying shadows and modulating colour. Well, now I know what glazing is LOL.

7. Painting with mediums

~Mediums are fluids that can be added to paint to modulate its consistency, drying time and texture. Again, I honestly never knew that. I’m so inexperienced with painting items and ways it’s not even funny man. ~In the case of acrylics, you get different mediums that make the paint matte or gloss.

Link 4: Acrylic Painting Techniques

1. Dry Brush

~You want to aim for seeing your brushstrokes in the paint. I don’t tend to like seeing my brushstrokes within my painting to be honest, but if it works it works, kinda thing.

2. Sgraffito/combing

~Involves painting a layer or two of paint and then etching into it to create a design and reveal what’s underneath. Again, I really don’t tend to do this either. Considering I just learnt it LOL but I wouldn’t have thought about removing paint or etching anything within the paint.

3. Wet-in-wet

~You can do wet-in-wet with acrylic just like you can with watercolor so go ahead and lay down some water on your paper and then you can just drop in the acrylic paint.  My thinking- If you want a watercolor effect, why not just use watercolors? Big brain time LOL

4. Overlay/glazing

~Start by laying down a darker color on your paper and then letting it dry. (Yes, we need to let this dry for several minutes. So while you’re waiting, pop in some popcorn, watch it pop, eat some and then you can go back to painting :) ) ~What you’re going to do now is overlay or glaze a lighter wash over top so water down your paint just a little bit. Y’know, this technique might actually come in handy with my next painting ngl. But we won’t talk about that until the time comes owo

5. Impasto

~You’re going to use a palette knife instead of a brush so this is a really nice way to achieve a lot of different texture within the paint. So, I only ever use palette knives before for backgrounds. To get that kind of color dye/blending feel y’know- I can’t think of the word right off hand but- TYE DYE yes tye dye feel, hush- :(

6. Modeling Paste

Before we even learn anything, like- I never knew that you could use modeling paste for painting?!?!?! Like- I only ever used modeling paste when I was fixing a clay sculpture or something of the sort, y’know?- The more you know ~A great way to add texture into your artwork. So you can use a palette knife to scoop it out and then apply it onto your paper. You could also use a paintbrush to softly apply it to your paper. (My brain man, this is all so new for me- I-) Note you can also mix it directly with the paint color if you want to. Let the modeling paste dry and then you can paint over top of it. Waittt, you could use this to make the texture of mountains owo and rock beds, bro- I feel so inspired by this one ngl.

7. Stencil/Stamp

So the girl in the video was pretty basic with it, you just use it as a stencil should be used and of course washing it afterwards.

8. Sponge

~With a sponge, similar process as you would use with watercolor. You’re just using the sponge to apply paint instead of a brush. (Big brain, she knows) You can go back in after you let the first layer dry a bit and add like a second or third layer of paint. Y’know, time for a funny-ish story. So back in elementary school, we did this sponge painting, we could only use the sponge. And I’m like, I wonder what a pufferfish would be like with a sponge. So- I painted the sponge right, then I took some bottled glue, put the glue on the back of the sponge and glued it to the paper. LOL My art teacher found it funny, but had me remake the painting and explained that it had to be painted with the sponge, not made out of the sponge. So yeah- 

9. Drips/Splatters

~To achieve drips, mix some water into your acrylic paint and you’re just gonna kind of angle your paper and guide the drips down. (So like, this would be kinda effective when you want the feel of a waterfall? Yes, no, maybe so?) ~For splatters, it’s better to use a flat bristle brush. Load it up with paint and you can actually just kind of flick the bristles and really control your splatters.

10. Gel Medium

~Gel medium is used to thicken your paint and also actually make it a little bit more adhesive. So you can mix it directly with your color and it’ll lighten it just a little bit. So, when using this don’t expect the exact color, okay got it.

11. Scumbling

~You can scumble with paint just like you can with colored pencils. So use your brush in a circular motion but keep it controlled. Well, that’s new. Now I know what it’s called at least LOL. I honestly never knew what that technique was called until now, but I remember always coloring with colored pencils like that just because my mum did--

12. Masking

~You can mask with masking tape of course or you can also use rubber cement. Rubber. Cement. I- Howcanonemakecementrubber- I might actually have to search up what it looks like, I’ve never heard of anything called rubber cement. ~If your paint bleeds through, just go back through and patch it up with some paint.

13. Mediums: Gloss or Matte

She really just explained what she was doing for this one.

14. Soft edge vs. hard edge

~Soft edge and hard edge are just two paint terms for how the paint is laid down and the quality of it. Who knew, I actually didn’t realize that how you lay down the paint affects how soft or hard the edge is.

So, I’m sorry for this being a bit late. But I feel like I learnt a lot with this one :)
