MODS OR ROCKERS ? The iconic British battle between the 2 youth subcultures of the 60s.

THE MODS 

Originally, the style of a mod was characterised by a subtle neutralisation of gender roles; with women sporting broad shouldered blazers, boxy dresses and skirts and short pixie cuts; the stereotypical societal focus on the female figure was eliminated- acting as a metaphor for the second wave of feminism’s liberation movement (an era of addressing issues and demanding change). 

Bold geometric patterns became popular as the mod style grew and strayed from the isolated grouped society it rooted from. The 60’s model, Twiggy remains to this day a fashion icon, paving the way for the popularisation of the mod movement. Her boyish and impressionable look acted as a catalyst for the 60’s youthful rebellion and lust for freedom that was so important to those apart of the mod subculture.

THE ROCKERS 

With their look being identifiable by the use of studs, spikes, leather and chains; elements of the rockers style are still spotted in modern day trends (the e-girl epidemic and trad-goth revival coming to mind). Inspired by American icons like actor Marlon Brando and fictional character Danny Zuko; the Rockers took the form of a British ‘greaser’, with a focus on motor racing and rock music, their style was built to be durable and truly wearable in all situations.

Contrasting to the Mods dedication to fashion, the rockers overall style and physical attributes left them isolated from socially booming parts of society: pubs, concerts and dance halls. This meant that they began expanding their

own social circle, further increasing tensions between the ever-growing Mod group.

THE RIVALRY

The iconic feud between the Mods and Rockers was shaped by a variety of things, some being: social and political attitudes, music, fashion, art and class. With such opposing ideologies at the peak of both subculture’s popularity, physical riots began to break out in heavily youth populated areas such as Brighton. 

One of the most significant differences between the two was their opinions on recreational drug use. With the mods night lives being heavily centred around the amphetamine wave of the mid-60’s, and the majority of rockers having an extreme distaste to any form of drug use (seeing no difference between cannabis and heroin) it’s clear to see where the moral clash between them came to light in social settings.

By looking at all the ways the two groups were divided; I think it’s clear to articulate how their differences are portrayed through their choice of style, this is probably emphasised by the fact that they’d have hated to be mistaken for each other.

INFLUENCES IN TODAYS FASHION 

With brands like Moschino and Versace bringing back the iconic shape of the shift dress in recent years; the influence of the mod era is undeniably noticeable. This, paired with black and white patterns, headbands and practical purses throws us as viewers back in time, allowing us to reflect on the way we bring history back into our own personal styles.

Similarly, the Versace Spring/Summer 2023 show had a huge amount of looks adorned with leather and tassels; Adut Akech’s look (pictured above, 5 in) specifically mirrors the shape of a typical rockers reworked leather jacket, the femininity of the leather mini-skirt and cropped top co-ord does juxtapose the almost exclusively masculine demographic of the rockers in the 60s.

"We're huge in Eastern Bloc countries, I know," Dave says. "Even in Russia they did a survey on the streets, asking people what film of a rock band they would most like to see. First it was the Beatles, then The Police, and then Depeche Mode! We've played in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, East Berlin - where Martin actually used to live in the early eighties - and the demand for tickets was huge. We'd be playing 10,000 seater venues and there'd be another 20,000 queuing up to get in! "In underground clubs in Russia, East Germany, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, where they can't get records very easily, Depeche Mode are really big. We get letters asking us to send tapes of our songs, which they then cut up and make music from, to play in these clubs. "In Hungary there are actually groups of fans called 'Depeches'! Honestly! They're like the mods and rockers we get in Britain, our hotel was surrounded by them, and they all looked like one of us. We'd go out there and it would be like looking at loads of mirrors, all these kids copying our image - not that we have a particularly strong image, really. So there'd be loads of Martins and Alans and Daves and Andys, and we literally couldn't go anywhere without being mobbed by these so-called 'Depeches'."

This is amazing. Dave talks about 'depechesh' fans of 1980's Hungary (actually the last letter of the word has to be 'sh' by its pronunciation, I wrote about it at the end of this post). He recalls that Hungarians looked like them. Probably he meant of the 1988 double, full house concert, because in 1985, when they had the first gig in Budapest, Hungarians didn't know them well. So true! I remember when I was 11 or 12, if you recognized someone in black leather-like clothing, always asked "Depeses vagy?" means "are you Depechesh?", it was exciting, exotic, something new and fresh thing from the West, over the iron curtain. Almost like "You are brave..." ha-ha. Oh, Dave, you always make me so happy. Thanks for your existence and beeing you as you <3

Get to know you: Sims Style

Thank you to @executables-sims for the tag! Took me a few days, but this was fun to fill out.

What’s your favorite Sims death?

Easy, death by Cowplant! It's so iconic and peak Sims-ridiculousness. That it made its way into future games is no surprise. Plus, I don't have a ton of accidental death in my game, and the Cowplant keeps me on my toes.

Alpha CC or Maxis Match?

Maxis Match as much as possible. I love TS2's aesthetic, even is some of it appears dated. My game certainly looks better in 2023 than it did in 2004, but it is still recognizably TS2

Do you cheat your sims weight?

No, I let it happen organically. Especially because I use Simler90's Slower Fitness Increase and Nopke's Fitness Decay, both of which really make you work for it. They are essential to my gameplay, but mean more of my sims have a high body skill than is probably normal. They are doing their best!

Do you move objects?

Of course. Why it isn't enabled in my UserStartup file is a question I ask myself daily.

Favorite Mod?

I have more than 500 mods so I don't know how I can pick. I could just say NUMENOR in all-caps to say everything he's done. But I'll go with a recent favorite, Nyami's Actual Alcohol Mod, because it adds chaos to gameplay and chaos is good.

Do you pronounce live mode like aLIVE or LIVing?

Living. We are in Live Mode, folks!

Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made?

In an older prompt, I answered with Daniel Monona, but since then it's definitely been Duke Patricio. I've made him 3 times (in my OG 2000's game, where he married Nina Caliente, in a Base Game Starter hood, and again in my 2020's game). He and Zeeshan are my favorite couple and I'm sad they are so close to old age because I've had so much fun playing them (but I've also been giving them way too many extra days with Elixir of Life or Life Fruit).

Ari is #2, but I haven't played him for a bit because I'm stuck on what to do with him as a Vampire...

Have you made a simself?

Nope, only one of my old TS2 Exchange avatar, which was intentionally not what I look like.

Which is your favorite EA hair color?

Never really thought about this, but maybe black?

Favorite EA hair?

Two male hairs, Rocker and Shortmop. Those two haircuts were iconic in my 2000's saves. Jeanette is my favorite CC hair.

Favorite life stage?

Teens. It's where my sims start to develop their personalities, and I begin to think about what I want them to do. They also haven't fully grown into their facial features yet, so you can get all sorts of good and bad surprises. Plus, they can cause lots of of trouble.

Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay?

I still consider myself a builder, even though I play my game much more frequently these days. But I think 400+ uploaded lots in my time playing this game allows me to hold onto that label.

Are you a CC creator?

I guess so! Learning how to mesh and use Milkshape in the last year has radically changed how I see myself in the TS2 community, and has stolen so many days from me (the trial and error of making, and the trial and error of uploading), but its been a very fun skill to develop.

Do you have any Simblr friends or a Sim Squad?

I love my mutuals but I don't interact with other accounts too often. I don't post on a Sims discord or anything. Maybe I should?!

Do you have any sims merch?

I do not.

Do you have a YouTube for sims?

No and I would definitely not have time to produce one!

How has your “Sims style” changed throughout your years of playing?

Loaded question time! For one, my game is much more LGBTQ+ than when I shared neighborhood save files with my siblings growing up. Now that it's my game, exploring different relationships with my sims is one of my favorite parts of play.

I've also become much more Maxis Match as I get older. The 2000's were a wild west for CC creation, and my old saves are bursting at the seams with painted-on clothes and the mid-decade emo aesthetic that I have absolutely no interest in playing in 2023.

Lastly, my build style used to be modern and CFE heavy, but now I prefer traditional (modern works better in TS3) and makeovers.

Who’s your favorite CC creator?

I'll take a historical approach to answering this, because there are many active creators whose work I love, but I also try to preserve the legacies of the original TS2 pioneers. Here are 5:

Numenor - The Modfather. His mods did more to expand this game than just about anyone in the heyday of TS2. If you are reading this, you know who Numenor is. Need I say more? Windkeeper - Probably the best Maxis Match CC of the old era. Her stuff holds up remarkably well. en7en - aka "That Pagoda Guy." Yeah, he's the CFE genius who made the Eiffel Tower and disappeared way too soon. A huge inspiration on my old build style. Ehaught58 - one of the great builders across many different Sims eras. I need to upload some of his old TS2 lots. I wish I could still access his Exchange page because it was a treasure trove. His lots were often huge and unfriendly to old machines but would be fine now. A very recognizable build style (dark woods, earth tones). Daihtnaoz7 - If he did nothing but discover CFE he'd still be a legend. But he also wrote the single bridge, double bridge, and atrium tutorials, demonstrating how to best take advantage of this new cheat. A literal gamechanger. I paid tribute to him here.

Honorable mentions: Cyclonesue (TSR), Hatshepsut (TSR), Tiko (TSR), PiaNouka (Exchange), GoddessByline (Exchange), Wintermuteai1, Minideidad (Exchange), Cireking213 (Exchange, still around as CK213 for TS3 and TS4).

How long have you had Simblr?

I think I made this in Spring 2020. Right as COVID was shutting everything down, I found myself playing TS2 a lot more and eventually discovered Simblr. The old, big sites are either shells of their former selves (MTS), or don't allow TS2 content anymore (TSR), so I figured if I wanted to be active in the TS2 community nearly 20 after the game came out, I had to be on Tumblr.

How do you edit your pictures?

I have a Photoshop action that crops, brightens, and sharpens, and somehow pictures still take me way too long.

What expansion/gamepack is your favorite?

Answering for the first 3 games (as I haven't played TS4)

TS1 - Makin Magic! A perfect final EP for the first game. Though Unleashed was probably my very first EP. TS2 - University (I'm in the minority here, but it's so much fun when you have big dorms or chaotic houses). Seasons is #2 TS3 - Late Night. Bridgeport is gorgeous and the new lot styles were fun and I wish they could be ported in TS2.

High performance Egg. Inspired by G&S and Joel Tudor. Seeing Joel ripping on so many different versions of modern machines, I knew I had to have it in my quiver. Nice wide squash tail. Flat rocker. Nice vee very slight in the center, deepest towards the fin, flat off the tail. Those work best for wider boards. Added little more tail rocker to loosen them up. If you want an Egg that turns, this is for you.

(unimportant) DOOM games ranking top 6

I recently got really into the DOOM series and I love each game very much so I put them in order of favorites as a simple top 6 list. I think i've played all of the main DOOM games, now including DOOM 3 6 - Doom 2016

honestly I really want to like this game more, but I'm biased since I played Eternal before this one. I enjoyed Eternal more overall, I think this Doom looks awesome but the combat is worse than in its sequel. After finishing this Doom I didn't really want to play it again but it's still cool.

5 - Doom 3 (+resurrection of evil/lost mission)

I love Doom 3, I held off from playing it because I heard it wasn't great but I was wrong. I still come back to this game because I love the way it looks and feels. I liked everything about it, and I even liked the stupid Doom movie kind of based on this game with Dwayne Johnson and Kurt Urban.

4 - Doom II (+final doom)

This game is tempting to place above the og, but I like this one less for how much more effort it makes me put into it. I love this game bc it's harder, but it takes up more time than blasting thru D1.

BUT D2's expansion add-ons are amazing. The supershotgun and demons in this Doom are so cool I could shit. The levels are good, but I feel they're not as great as the ones put together for the first game. The first time I played tricks and traps or barrels of fun I enjoyed myself, but after a couple runs through the game it fucking sucks.

3 - Doom 1993 (+ultimate doom/sigil)

Nothing fucking beats doom but doom, guys. I love the original even more than the sequel. It feels nostalgic even though I haven't known about the series until 2024.

2 - Doom Eternal (+ancient gods I/II)

Eternal is the third Doom game I played after D2 and I was off my fucking rocker. It was so cool I was freaking out when I saw the soul sphere in 3D looking like the original. I loved Eternal because it feels great to play, it looks amazing, the demons look alike to their original designs, there's so much to collect and interact with, the upgraded weapon mods and praetor suit systems, etc. I don't reeally consider any of the Doom lore besides the first game super important but I thought the new stuff was interesting to read into. I was super confused about who the fuck dr. hayden was tho.

1 - Doom 64

Doom 64 is like a combo of the original two and Doom 3, which technically it is. I have played this game over and over again, I don't know why I love it so much. It's easier than the first two games and I'm disappointed the demons that were planned didn't all make it into the game. It's badass and it's eerie though. I played Eternal for hours to unlock the D64 marine skinpack.
