Arcane Season 2's One Big Problem

Arcane should have been three seasons.

That, I think, lies at the core of the show's problems in season 2. While Season 1 was fast-paced, it felt right for what was happening. Season 2 is much like most of its characters, trying too hard to do too much all at once. If they had had a third season they could have tied up their plotlines in a more satisfying way.

Don't get me wrong, I love Season 2, but I can't ignore how much this pacing affects things. I can't ignore how the political drama is shunted aside in favor of introducing and resolving these wider fantastical elements which are just too much for a single season of television.

I understand why they did it this way. At the end of the day, Arcane is a fantasy action series first, a familial tragedy second, and a fantastical geo-political war drama last. That's why those first two elements are given narrative precedence over the last one, but it's hard to ignore how the broader problems with the world of Arcane go unresolved, especially when they are such a huge part of the story beforehand.

Arcane should have had three seasons. Season 2 should have been focused on the escalating war between Piltover and Zaun while the wider fantastical elements brew in the background. Season 2 should have focused on Piltover's gradual descent into wartime fascism and Zaun's more and more desperate and inhumane measures to fight back. With another season to breathe and give this focus, it could also mirror in the escalating conflict between Vi and Jinx.

And then, when those massive fantastical elements do explode into focus with Victor's cult becoming wildly known, it's could be all the more impressive and frightening, with these elements properly built up over an entire season.

The third season would then, of course, see the forces of Piltover and Zaun be forced to unite against Viktor and his glorious evolution. Maybe he has been taking the dead killed in the war and making them into his soldiers, and know the cast must face slain friends turned into living nightmares. Forcing a total breakdown of societal barriers in the name of survival as Viktor makes a play for Divinity.

Did...did Rosalina make Rainbow Road?

OK so Super Mario Party Jamboree is the newest Mario Party game (at the time of this post releasing) and there are these character-themed minigames called Showdown Minigames. Rosalina's one of the 10 characters who has one, it's called Rosalina's Radical Race, and the first section involves snowboarding, nothing too weird. But then there's the second portion of the minigame, and UH-

DID SHE MAKE THE MOST ICONIC MARIO KART COURSE IN HISTORY?

I mean...it certainly looks like it!

They even play what I'm pretty sure are four notes from Rainbow Road's first theme (sped up) once the players reach the second part of the race.

I saw someone else in the comment section of a now deleted video (Nintendo works fast) claim that the music at the start of the snowboarding portion of Rosalina's Radical Race sounds like the music for Double Dash's Rainbow Road. I didn't catch that on my first listen (I've never played Double Dash, alright?) Look up the clip if you're interested, do you hear it?

But anyway, back to the lore implications.

You know, this makes some things retroactively make a lot more sense, like her reveal trailer for Smash taking place on Rainbow Road:

Even going all the way back to Mario Kart Wii, it would explain its version of Rainbow Road being heavily influenced by Super Mario Galaxy (other than, you know, cross-promotional synergy). It has Star Bits, a Launch Star cannon, both its course staff ghosts use Rosalina, it uses Good Egg Galaxy's theme as a countermelody underneath its own main melody, etc.:

So has Rainbow Road just...ALWAYS been hers? This whole time?

The Edge of Dawn (Seasons of Warfare):

The main theme of the game, centered around a character who is significant across all routes. Is it a villain song? Is it a map to the future? Your choices dictate as much. Every route is reflected through the lyrics as well.

this song makes me so emotional every time. the vocals are beautiful and the lyrics are so good. it's about feeling alone even when you're surrounded by people. knowing any happiness is just fleeting. about loving someone even though you're going to leave them. (spoilers for fe3h) to get specific, it just makes me so sad the way edelgard distances herself from others because she knows she'll have to betray or leave them eventually but she longs desperately for connection especially toward byleth, whom she admires and loves greatly, even when they're not on her side. the lyrics "open the door, and walk away / never give in to the call of yesterday" make me want to sob because she's determined to create her own justice and her vision of an equal world, but that doesn't mean she can't be emo about it. she loved byleth, the black eagles, she loved the empire, that's why she wanted to see it better. fuck all the haters edelgard there's a reason the theme song of this game is yours! and it's good as hell too!

Super Smash Brothers Brawl had the best theme, with Melee being close behind. How can you beat an entire chorus sing AUDI FAMAM? You can't.

Props do need to be given to the SSB64 version for setting up the medly aspect of the games intro/theme that Melee then took and ran with to create an absolutely beautiful tapestry of all things Nintendo, and I would concede that Melee best represents both Nintendo and what the SSB series stands for as a true culmination of all-stars duking it out. I still like Brawls theme better as a song, as Melee requires more context and jumps around in styles a lot but that's to accommodate all they are trying to encapsulate. Brawl's theme stands on its own.

And then there is the WiiU/3DS game and (worst of all) Ultimate.

The WiiU/3DS (SSB4) was epic but generic. I played this one a lot and it got repetitive fast and it felt like it was trying (unsuccessfully) to copy melee without having the same passion and uniqueness behind it. And like, it's still epic and not a bad song, but it is generic and doesn't match up to Brawl. The game itself was alright, but after the beauty and epicness of subspace emissary to have a poorly made version of kirby air ride's city trial was meh at best. The classic face off against characters in themed situations was still fun at least, but that's getting more into the game than the music, I digress.

I do still stand by, SSB4 theme was more generic than SSB2 or 3, and is the start of the trend to even more generic.

Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, oh I how I loathe thee.

The intro is so anime sounding (derogatory) (not even the epic anime sounding but genric and fogettable anime sounding), and I know I am biased in that, but here me out. No other theme has had words, other than brawl (the best), but those were Latin chanting as compared to lyric lyrics. And even then, the translation of that Latin was fucking epic and fit the theme of the game well still. Ultimate has annoying lyrics, and is trying to be as epic as possible while actively doing the exact opposite, the words detract from it entirely. Its like they took the last refrain of Brawl translated into english:

"Now my friends are with me

Some of them were once heroes

Some, my mortal enemies

And as we face each other in battle, locked in combat

We shine ever brighter."

And made it less imaginative, more on the nose on than that (if you can believe it), and less epic/inspiring.

And the instrumental continues the trend of SSB4 started of being even more generic, and while SSB4 at least had some gravitas, Ultimate has nothing. What little Ultimate does have over SSB4 is actually having animation compared to only game play scenes, but thhat ain't the music. It's like subjectively worse in every possible way, taking aspects from the others and combining them into a monstrosity. Which reflects the gameplay of world of light as well, it was so bad. Like a bad amalgamation of subspace emissary (my beloved) and the classic mode, but with none of the story (or at least no good or compelling story, which is, you know, the entire point of a story) and way less interesting themed battles. Taking inspiration from the past and tainting it and making it worse.

(This has been in drafts for a while and I've gone into the game play for the later games and how lack luster the solo stuff was, so I'm adding this addendum for melee and brawl.

Melee was at least unique adventures and played off the all-stars it was bringing together, what with the mario landscape and the zelda castle/temple to explore. It was an improvement on SSB64.

And Brawl had Subspace emissary [my beloved] and although the gameplay itself wasn't great [even worse than some of the sequels to it I will concede] nothing and I mean NOTHING has been able to top its story, of which was the main reason to play it. It also introduced all the characters and forced you to use all of them, letting you test them all out and see which ones you like and didn't, and to use them in different situations, which no other one has done to the same extent. Hence why brawls the best [ignoring broken meta knight. {We don't talk about him}])
